Is Luxembourg Worth Visiting?

We found Luxembourg to be breathtaking with its cross between medieval architecture and sophisticated ambiance.

One minute you could be strolling along the Alzette River and the other you could be getting lost in the network of rooms in the Casemates du Bock!

The cuisine was a balance between Luxembourgish original dishes and those that had French, Dutch, and German influences, and we found Luxembourg not to be as expensive as you might expect.

It seemed like this city was a magical destination for travelers seeking a smaller-scale piece of Europe (with far fewer tourists), and it surely didn’t disappoint.

In our opinion, Luxembourg as a whole and Luxembourg City are absolutely worth visiting! We’re more of adventure travelers, but nevertheless, Luxembourg was worth visiting even if only for a short visit.

The Best Time to Visit Luxembourg

Luxembourg is similar to that of other Western European countries in that it has two main peak seasons: summer and winter .

During these peak seasons, you’ll find beautiful weather (respective: warm and sunny summer months and dark and snowy winter months), exciting activities, and even beautiful Christmas markets in the winter.

However, you’ll also find inflated prices for flights, trains, tours, food, and accommodations. You’ll also be sharing your experience with tens of thousands of other tourists… not exactly how you pictured your magical day trip to Luxembourg, I’m sure.

The best time to visit Luxembourg is in the spring and fall, otherwise known as the shoulder seasons . During these periods of March through early June and mid-September through mid-November, you’ll find comfortable, festive weather, but with far fewer tourists and none of the inflated prices.

These are the best times to visit Luxembourg since you’ll save money, spend less time waiting in line at major attractions, and you’ll have more opportunities to chat with the locals!

We visited in May and found it to be absolutely wonderful. On our next trip to Luxembourg, we will likely be visiting in the fall to see the stunning foliage!

Is One Day Enough for Luxembourg?

There are a few different ways to answer this, but, in short, not really .

If you like to take your time, stroll the cobblestone streets, visit the museums, and check out the big-hitting attractions when you visit a new European destination, then you’ll simply need more than one day in Luxembourg City.

In reality, three days would be the perfect amount of time to spend in Luxembourg.

Especially if you’re taking a day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels, there are some fun stops you could include on your journey such as Dinant, so more time will definitely benefit you.

Luxembourg is also home to four different regions outside of the capital! If you’re looking to spend some time hiking, then we highly suggest heading northeast to the Mullerthal Trail.

For a foodie’s day trip, start in the capital then make your way over to the surrounding rural towns such as Vianden.

It is possible to see and do a lot in one day in Luxembourg City, but you won’t get to see everything, you may end up feeling rushed, and you almost definitely won’t be able to explore outside of the capital.

So, if you’re able to swing taking a few extra days off of work, then we suggest spending at least two but preferably 3 days in Luxembourg!

Things to Know About Luxembourg

Whether you are visiting Luxembourg for the first time or this is your fourth or fifth time returning, there are a few good tips to keep in mind.

✔️ To start, people who live in Luxembourg are called Luxembourgers.

Luxembourg is sandwiched between Germany, Belgium , and France and is the 7 th tiniest country in Europe.

So, yes , you can expect the food and beer to be phenomenal with its interesting combination of both local specialties and international classics.

✔️ It’s the only Grand Duchy in the entire world!

So, don’t expect to see a king or queen strolling through the Grand Ducal Palace. Instead, you may see or hear of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess making an appearance.

✔️ Most Luxembourgers know up to four or five languages!

From a very young age, the citizens of Luxembourg are taught German, French, and their native language, Luxembourgish . Some people also learn how to speak Dutch, and many people learn English later in life.

Since many locals will know at least some English, you won’t need to worry about getting around the city.

Though, if you happen to speak some French or German, that may speed things up a little. I speak French pretty well, and I just defaulted to speaking French while in Luxembourg for ease of communication.

✔️ If you plan on entering multiple museums, visiting the Grand Duchy, and seeing the castles, then I highly suggest purchasing the Visit Luxembourg Card .

It will save you time, the hassle of buying different tickets everywhere you go, and money since you’ll be getting free or reduced rates at all attractions.

✔️ Last, but definitely not least, be sure to pack comfortable, supportive walking shoes for your day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels.

Luxembourg is made up of cobblestone streets, brick sidewalks, and ancient medieval castles that have been deteriorating over time.

Needless to say, the walking conditions aren’t great and you’re going to be doing a lot of walking… good shoes are a must!

How Can I Spend a Day in Luxembourg?

If you only have one full day in Luxembourg, you have a few different options on how you could spend it.

✔️ If cities aren’t your personal favorite place to spend hours upon hours walking around, then I would recommend taking a train directly to the Mullerthal region.

Here, you’ll find enchanting forests full of toppling waterfalls and stunning scenery.

If nature is what you’re seeking, I would recommend taking a few photos of the Grand Palace and then heading straight to Mullerthal.

✔️ If cities seemingly frozen in medieval times are your thing, then spend the day exploring the Grund, the Bock Casemates, and walking over the aqueducts!

Luxembourg City is a unique and perplexing place to simply wander .

You can be in an upscale, sophisticated part of town one moment and deep in the Grund scouring cobblestone streets next to the world’s last Grand Duchy the next!

The city is full of history, so there’s a lot to keep you occupied for at least a couple of days.

✔️ If you don’t have much motivation to be on your feet (or on a train) all day, then have yourself a picnic in the park!

Practically anywhere you pick will be scenic and particularly beautiful in the summer months when the flowers have bloomed.

There are also plenty of small shops where you can pick up some local food, or you can get take-out (also called take-away) for a pre-made gourmet meal!

Best Luxembourg Tours

If you’re thinking about taking a day trip Luxembourg from Brussels and want to include Dinant like I suggested (this is a very popular travel combination), then there are a few ways you can do it.

First, you can opt to book your journey through train travel, you can rent a car, can take a bus, or you can join an organized tour.

If you aren’t too familiar with booking your own travel needs and organizing an itinerary to fit a schedule, then it may be easier for you to join one of the organized tours I have mentioned below.

Some of these tours include pick up and drop off in downtown Brussels as well as multi-lingual guides and safe transportation. While others may require you to get yourself to Luxembourg before beginning your tour.

This is where Google Maps will become your best friend. You can simply type in everything you want to see into the directions tab, and organize your journey to be as time (and walking) efficient as possible.

Having been all over Luxembourg City myself, this is the ideal walking tour that you could take, particularly if you only have one day to explore the city centre.

How to Get to Luxembourg from Brussels

When it comes to actually getting to Luxembourg from Brussels, regardless if you plan on joining an organized tour or not, you have several different options.

Personally, I love train travel in Europe and I truly believe this is the best way to travel from Brussels to Luxembourg. With nearly 30 different options for direct trains from Brussels to Luxembourg, this is easily the quickest and simplest method of taking this day trip.

It’s not only scenic and much more comfortable than flying or taking the bus, but it almost always saves you money. If you are planning on taking a day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels, then I would seriously consider taking the train.

I know it can be overwhelming trying to plan an entire itinerary on your own, so I would suggest booking train tickets to Luxembourg from Brussels (you’ll want to get off at the Gare Lëtzebuerg station in Luxembourg) then booking one of the day tours from Brussels I suggested above.

This will save you some money since you won’t be paying for private transportation, will give you the experience of riding Europe’s most famous railroad, and will allow you to be on your own schedule.

Buses are another good way of getting from Brussels to Luxembourg City. While not as scenic or comfortable as the train, they mainly provide affordable transportation for budget travelers.

Most buses run through companies such as Flixbus, Eurolines, Ouibus, and RegioJet. Journies from Brussels City to Luxembourg City typically cost around 20 euros and take about 3 hours each way.

If you want to compare schedules and pricing as well as be able to book your tickets all in one place, I suggest using Omio !

If you’re looking for the option that is going to give you the most freedom on your day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels, then I suggest renting a car.

It will cost you the most money, especially during the peak season months, but if you have a specific itinerary planned then it will be worth it.

This will give you the freedom to move at your own pace, include as many side trips as you would like (to Dinant, for example), and allow you to experience more of the rural neighborhoods of Luxembourg.

However, do keep in mind that some areas of Luxembourg are pedestrian-only, so you will still have to do some walking.

You’ll also want to take a look at Luxembourg’s driving requirements (i.e. international licenses, insurance policies, etc.) and you’ll need to make sure that you can drive your rental car over international borders as some agencies do not allow this.

✔️ Pro Tip: You also have the option of creating a Bruges to Luxembourg day trip itinerary! In my opinion, Bruges was far more beautiful and exciting than Brussels (you can read my full comparison of Bruges vs Brussels to help you decide), and it’s well worth the extra little bit of travel time.

The Best Things To Do in Luxembourg

No matter if you’re spending one week or one day in Luxembourg, these are some of the best things you should include on your itinerary!

Haute Ville

Known as the upper area of the city, Haute Ville is full of beautiful cobblestone streets, sophisticated museums, art galleries, and well-manicured gardens.

Visitors can enjoy shopping on the famous Grand Rue , strolling by the Grand Duchy, and photographing the beautiful rural neighborhoods of the city.

This is where the majority of tourists spend most of their time since it’s also where you’ll find most of the restaurants, bars, and streetside cafes.

This is the most “European” part of Luxembourg, so it’s going to look a little more like any common town in Europe, and a little less like… well, Luxembourg.

On any day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels, try to spend at least a couple of hours in Haute Ville before making your way down to the Grund.

The Grund is the lower half of the city that boasts incredible, medieval ruins intertwined with the Alzette River.

This is where many tourists go to escape the crowds of Haute Ville and find themselves immersed in gothic architecture and magical views overlooking the city.

This is also where you’ll find the most magical views of the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Grand Ducal Palace, as well as perfect trails for an evening stroll.

In my opinion, this is the most romantic part of the city and is well-deserving of the majority of your time.

No day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels would be complete without a visit to the Grund, and no visit to the Grund would be complete with a visit to the Casemates du Bock!

Casemates du Bock

The Casemates du Bock are a spectacular sight to see when on a day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels.

These magnificent structures were built to protect the city from invaders during World War II and are made up of hundreds of different rooms, walkways, and levels.

The vast network of tunnels is a mysterious and impressive sentiment to how military personnel lived during these times of war, and it’s quite incredible to see for yourself.

From the southern side of the ruins, visitors can look out over the Alzette River and get exceptional views of Neimënster – the iconic public meeting place and concert hall that has represented Luxembourg City since the 17 th century!

The Casemates du Bock are my absolute favorite place to visit in Luxembourg City and you could easily spend several hours exploring these tunnels.

Grand Ducal Palace & The Changing of the Guard

The Grand Ducal Palace is the official residence of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and is a must-see for any architecture enthusiast.

The incredible building was built as an imperial residence during the German occupation and now serves mostly ceremonial functions, but it also houses some very interesting museums.

Every day, visitors can witness the Changing of the Guard outside of the Grand Ducal Palace. The palace is on 24-hour watch and requires a guard to be posted at all times.

Thus, the “changing of the guard” is describing the end of one guard’s shift, and the beginning of the oncoming guard’s shift.

The event is quite amazing to witness since Luxembourg is the last country in the world with a Grand Duchy!

Notre Dame Cathedral

The Notre Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg City is a must-see for anyone who has an appreciation of architecture and religions.

It’s the main church located within this medieval city, which provides visitors with plenty to look at as they explore its intricately carved interior or admire views from up high on top floors that have been made accessible for public viewing.

The building is known for its soaring spires and beautiful stained glass windows that create the ultimate centerpiece to an already beautiful city center.

Explore the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art

The Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art is located in the historic city center of Luxembourg and is a must-see on any day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels.

The museum’s collection includes paintings from several famous artists as well as photography by some of Europe’s best photographers – all on display inside 17 th -century guildhalls which have been beautifully restored into an elegant contemporary space.

While the museum is spectacular for anyone young and old, art enthusiasts travel to Luxembourg from far and wide to catch a glimpse at its everchanging collections and exhibits.

Place d’Armes is one of the most well-known, beautiful places to visit in Luxembourg City. It is a beautifully designed area that will bring you back to medieval times.

It features shops and cafes, perfect for people looking to grab lunch or spend some time people-watching while enjoying Luxembourg’s beautiful architecture!

While this is one of the more touristy areas of Luxembourg City, it is definitely worth at least a short visit on your day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels!

Luxembourg Viaduct

Also known as the Passerelle, this iconic Luxembourg Viaduct is a must for any architecture aficionado. It was built in 1861 and spans the gorgeously flowing river, with its mighty supports reaching up to nearly 150 feet into the air on either side of its steep falls below!

The road over this structure features fantastic views from every corner from the Haute Ville all the way down to the Grund of Luxembourg City.

This majestic structure carries vehicles over the beautiful Pétrusse Valley, offering exceptional views of the surrounding landscape and Haute Ville.

If you’re joining an organized tour from Brussels or are driving yourself, try to ensure that you get the chance to drive over this decades-old viaduct!

Adolphe Bridge

The Adolphe Bridge in Luxembourg City is an architectural marvel. This Gothic-style stone arch bridge was built in 1903 and has become a city landmark as well as one of Europe’s most famous bridges over the Moselle River!

Spend some time strolling this long bridge while taking in the pretty epic surrounding views of the railway and lush greenery below.

The bridge recently added a lower deck in 2018, so people can enjoy passing under the road from the Boulevard Royal in Haute Ville to the Avenue de la Liberté in Gare.

Getting to Luxembourg from Paris is a cinch! Simply hop on the TGV train at Gare de l’Est in Paris and you’ll arrive in Luxembourg City about 2 hours and 12 minutes later.

There are 3 stops along this journey, but you’ll just be getting off at the very end.

A day trip to Luxembourg from Paris is a fantastic idea since you’ll be combining similar destinations in one trip! How are Paris and Luxembourg similar? Glad you asked.

They share the same language, similar cuisine due to France’s influences, and similar weather so you won’t need to pack for an array of seasons on your trip.

If you’re planning on combining two destinations in one trip, Paris and Luxembourg are a great combo!

Day Trip to Luxembourg from Amsterdam

A day trip to Luxembourg from Amsterdam can be a lot of fun, but I do suggest one thing… don’t spend just one day in Luxembourg if you’re coming from Amsterdam!

Especially if you’re traveling via train, the journey will take you between 6 and 7 hours and will include multiple stops and train changes. If you decide to fly, you’ll save a lot of time with a nonstop flight averaging around one hour, but it will cost you typically between $200-$300.

So, while Luxembourg and Amsterdam are another wonderful combo due to their vast differences (i.e. the nightlife of Amsterdam paired with the culture of Luxembourg makes for an awesome trip… I know, I did it!), I would highly recommend either flying if you can afford it or spending at least two days in Luxembourg before taking a return train.

Day Trip to Luxembourg from Frankfurt

Taking a day trip from Frankfurt to Luxembourg is another good trip idea. Frankfurt’s high class and European architecture combined with Luxembourg’s sophisticated culture and Grand Duchy makes for an exciting experience all around.

But, similar to Amsterdam, the trip will usually take you around 4 hours by train each way.

So, yes, it is possible to make this trip in one day, but 8 hours of traveling will only leave you with about 4 or 5 hours of sightseeing in the middle.

If you don’t mind long travel days, then I highly suggest taking a day trip to Luxembourg from Frankfurt!

But, if you like to take your time in a new city, then consider flying or including Luxembourg on a future trip.

Vianden Castle is one of the most popular day trips from Luxembourg available to visitors!

The area boasts incredible hiking trails of all difficulty levels and is home to the most beautiful scenery in Luxembourg, and even Europe according to some.

We were unable to make it out to the Mullerthal region on our last visit to Luxembourg, but we will surely be including it on our next visit!

If you’re wondering how many days to spend in Luxembourg, a day trip from Brussels would be perfect to get a feel for the city and enjoy the stunning architecture and landscape.

You can visit some of Luxembourg’s free museums, wander through the parks and take the free lift to have incredible views over the city in one day in Luxembourg while also keeping the costs down.

However, if you’d like to get out into nature and hike through the lovely forests of northern Luxembourg, you can extend your Luxembourg itinerary to two or three days to make the most of your trip to the tiny nation.

Getting To & Around Luxembourg

If you’re planning a Luxembourg day trip from Brussels, you can easily arrive in the centre of the capital by train in just under three hours from Bruxelles-Luxembourg train station with Belgian railways, with one stop in Arlon. You can view train schedules here.

Enjoy the countryside and listen to some Stromae or Francis of Delirium for a taste of Belgian or Luxembourgish music on your journey.

Buses take a similar amount of time to arrive in Luxembourg, with journeys taking at least 2 hours 30 minutes, but not taking you into the centre of Luxembourg. You can, however, easily take a free bus into the city to start your one day in Luxembourg City. You can view bus schedules here.

For those that prefer to visit with a guide, there are a number of organised Luxembourg day trips from Brussels such as this full-day tour or this full-day tour.

The quickest way to reach Luxembourg from Brussels , however, is by car. There are many car rental options in the centre of Brussels right in front of the Brussel-Zuid/Midi train station. From there it’s just two hours on the E411 and E25 to Luxembourg City; it is also a Schengen area member so you won’t experience much of a border. You can view car rental options here.

When you arrive in Luxembourg, you can find many car parks around the city, such as Parking Glacis, which also has spaces for electric cars and bicycles, and is open 24 hours a day.

It’s one of the cheaper car parks in the city too. Just be wary that there is a market there on Sundays so there will be limited parking then.

One of the most exciting things about Luxembourg when you’re there, especially if you didn’t bring your car, is that the public transport is free!

Buses regularly pass through the coach station where you’ll arrive and take you for free into the city centre, in comfortable seats with wifi and charging points. This makes it easy to take in all of the attractions in Luxembourg.

The buses and trams are easy to use and have regular schedules, although you won’t need them much, and bus drivers are friendly and helpful in English, French, German and Luxembourgish!

Luxembourgers actually only make up 30% of the residents of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, so you can rest assured you’ll encounter many polyglots and don’t have to struggle through learning Luxembourgish, although a “Gudde Moien” wouldn’t go amiss.

1 Day in Luxembourg Itinerary

Arriving by car, bus or train on your Luxembourg day trip from Brussels, you can easily reach the city centre walking or with free public transport to start exploring the sparkling city streets, perfect panoramic views and fantastic fortifications – which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can also take a walking tour if you prefer to explore with a guide.

Chemin de la Corniche

If you’ve arrived in Luxembourg by train or bus, you can start your Luxembourg itinerary walking over the beautiful 19th-century viaduct La Passerelle. This huge structure seems over the top when you see how small the river is, however, it gives you incredible opening views of the city of Luxembourg on either side of the valley.

Within the valley, looking particularly spectacular when it’s lit up at night, is a large skate park; if you have time, you should definitely bring your board here and try out the amazing maze of bowls under the backdrop of the old ramparts and magnificent viaduct.

Crossing La Passerelle and turning right at the city’s courthouse, Cabinet d’instruction de Luxembourg, you’ll arrive at your first stop: the Chemin de la Corniche.

This pretty pathway leads you along the Alzette valley on top of the 17th-century ramparts, built by the Spanish and French, and gives you a wonderful panorama over Luxembourg City with its lush green trees, shiny grey tiled-roofs, and the spires and turrets that makes Luxembourg’s architecture so iconic.

Across the valley, you can see the intriguing Église Saint-Jean-du-Grund and Neumünster Abbey cultural centre that now occupies the church buildings for concerts and other performances.

Follow the route taking in the glorious views until you reach the second stop of your day in Luxembourg.

Rocher du Bock

At the end of the Chemin de la Corniche, you come across an enormous rock leading down to the bottom of the valley with the remnants of an old castle; the Rocher du Bock.

The construction of this castle actually marks the founding of Luxembourg, as Siegfried I of the Ardennes built his castle, ​​Lucilinburhuc (which evolved into Luxembourg ), on the rocky cliff in 963.

Although Luxembourg only became an independent state in 1890 after the death of the heirless Dutch King and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, William III. The castle is an important place to visit if you’re interested in learning about the history of Luxembourg.

With the Alzette River on three sides of the castle, and the additional engineering work of the Italians, Spanish, French, Belgians, Austrians, Prussians and Dutch, it proved effective in warding away intruders, which led to Luxembourg gaining the nickname the “ Gibraltar of the North” owing to both places’ excellent fortifications.

Below the fortress that remains on top of the rock, there are tunnels and a crypt, known as the Casemates de Bock, that were dug out by Austrians in the 18th century.

The tunnels are temporarily closed, however, usually in summer months you can spend 45 minutes wandering around the tunnels marvelling at history within and the landscape outside the holes from 10 am to 5 pm every day of the week.

You can still enjoy the wonderful views from around and on top of the Rocher du Bock, which still has parts relatively intact despite the decree for Luxembourg’s fortifications to be destroyed in the 1860s.

Head down to the riverside from one of the pathways from the Rocher du Bock to see the statue of Melusina – the legendary wife of Sigfried, who founded the city.

The story goes that upon their marriage, Melusina told her husband to give her complete privacy for one whole day a week, however, after months of curiosity, Siegfried peeped on her while she was bathing, only to find that she had a fish’s tail. Noticing his attention, she then fled into the Alzette River, with some people alleging to have seen her in the hundreds of years since.

You might not get to see the real mermaid, but there’s a curious 3D-printed statue next to the river that’s worth a look.

Fort Thüngen

25 to 30 minutes away from the Rocher du Bock, either by walking, tram or bus, you’ll arrive at the amazing Thüngen Fort.

With all forts in the city destroyed after the 1867 Treaty of London, only three round towers and the foundation walls remained of the fortress until it was partially rebuilt according to its old aesthetic in the 1990s to accommodate Luxembourg’s Museum of Modern Art in one area.

Most of the fort today houses the Musée Dräi Eechelen, which means the Three Acorns Museum, as each of the remaining towers has an acorn on its roof.

The museum has a permanent exhibition showcasing the fortress throughout the centuries, from its original construction in 1732 by the Baron of Thüngen, with more than 600 artefacts and documents including historic photographs of the fortress before and after it was razed.

Outside, you can also see the remains of the defensive moat that protected the fortress walls and was only penetrable via a 169-metre tunnel from the nearby Fort Obergrünewald, which you can see on your way to stop four on your Luxembourg itinerary. 

Pfaffenthal Elevator

Over the river from Fort Obergrünewald, is one of Luxembourg’s top tourist attractions: the Panoramic Elevator of the Pfaffenthal. Depending on which way you’re coming from, you can take the lift up or down the 71-metre structure to take in the stunning views over the valley, and below, thanks to the glass floor and walls of the lift.

It doesn’t take long to ride, but it’s free, so you can save yourself another steep climb up the slopes and stairs leading from the valley floor to the city streets – and you can take bikes in it if you’re seeing the city on two wheels.

From the top of the lift, you can spend the rest of your afternoon in Luxembourg City wandering the main city streets of the Ville Haute district.

Ville Haute

Away from the beautiful valley and historic monuments lies the wonderful centre of Luxembourg, with beautiful architecture and design from the buildings themselves to the bins and lampposts.

Whether it shows the wealth of the country or the culture of the locals, you’ll notice the streets are almost perfectly clean which adds to the magical feel of certain corners and buildings, like the Palais Grand-Ducal. This stately palace does open for guided tours in the Summer, but for the rest of the year, you can simply take in the intricately carved stone façade with gold-decorated balconies.

Head a couple of hundred metres East to the fish market; a former central square between two Roman roads where farmers and fishermen would come to sell their produce, this square is now a delightful area with the National Museum and bars and restaurants.

A short walk back to the centre is Place Guillaume II, known locally as Knuedler due to the knots on the belts of the Franciscan monks who lived in the area. It was destroyed and rebuilt by the French, part of which makes the city unique as it shows influences from many different cultures and historic periods. Now in the square, you can find the town hall as well as a large market every Wednesday and Saturday.

Place d’Armes is another beautiful square nearby, and around both squares, you’ll be able to find something wonderful to eat. Although most of the activities on the Luxembourg itinerary were free, when you pay for food and drink or accommodation in the country, you do notice that Luxembourg is quite expensive.

There are options, however, if you want to spend what you’ve saved on, for example, a delicious three-course set menu for €30-40 in Le Rabelais , or save a little more but still eat well in Chiggeri , with a large menu and main dishes costing €20-30.

If you’re not as worried about trying the local cuisine or you’re interested in finding craft beer in Luxembourg, try Urban for a cheaper and more international menu, and a huge collection of draft craft beers and cocktails.

Walk back to the train station via Pont Adolphe for a different perspective of the city and more stunning panoramas before taking your train back to Brussels, or just to take in a last glimpse of the city before you reach the end of one day in Luxembourg.

Have 2 or 3 Days in Luxembourg?

One day in Luxembourg is perfect to see most of the city and enjoy the urban wildness of the capital’s parks. But if you want to learn more about the millennia-long history of the small but strategically placed nation, you’ll need to spend at least 2 to 3 days.

Over 2 days in Luxembourg, you can take your time seeing the city’s sights and explore more of the galleries and museums, many of which do permit free entrance to the permanent exhibitions.

But to truly enjoy the landscape of the small country, you’ve got to rent a car and spend 3 days in Luxembourg, driving to Mullerthal for some wonderful hikes and walks around the waterfalls hidden in the woods, or Echternach for the Gorges du Loup hike around the caverns.

Luxembourg City is a small but mighty city – there’s a load of history to discover and out of this world views to check out!

I visited Luxembourg on a day trip from Brussels and had more than enough time to see everything in the city. So here’s everything you need to know about spending one day in Luxembourg City. I’ll go over how to get there (even give you some money saving hacks!), and what to do while you’re there.

What You Didn’t Know About Luxembourg

Luxembourg is both a very interesting city and country… Luxembourg City (in Luxembourg) is one of the only cities with the same name as its mother country! And did you know they’re the third wealthiest country in the world (and actually the wealthiest if you look at per capita)?

Most of its citizens aren’t even native Luxembourgers. 2/3 of the country are foreigners from Portugal, Spain … etc.

On top of that, there are an extra 200 000 people commuting to the city for work from other countries. They’ll live in Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, and France and commute to the city every day. That’s because there are a lot of employment opportunities in the city but it’s very expensive to live there.

Freebies In The City That Luxembourg Offers!

Unlike most European cities, Luxembourg offers quite a bit for free… like it’s completely free to use the public restrooms throughout the city.

They also offer free city Wifi everywhere, as long as you have a valid phone number to sign up for it. And as of 2020, all public transport is is free to use in the entire country! Don’t believe me? Read more about it here .

Do They Speak English In Luxembourg?

You won’t have a problem speaking English while you’re visiting. But surprisingly, it’s the 4th or 5th language most locals will learn.

In school, Luxembourgers learn 3 languages: Luxembourgish, German, and French. English is only introduced much later.

And as I mentioned earlier, most families living there are foreigners, so this doesn’t include their mother tongue spoken at home.

How To Get From Brussels To Luxembourg

If you’re going on a day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels, you have a few travel options: you can rent a car, take a bus or train, or go on an organized tour. Brussels to Luxembourg is about a 3 hours away.

Although renting a car gives you the most flexibility and freedom, it also comes with its own sets of problems and risks (driving in a foreign city, finding parking, etc). Rent a car in Brussels here .

Your next option is to take the bus – which is usually the cheapest travel option. The main problem is that the bus doesn’t leave too often from Brussels to Luxembourg. Double check the travel time because it can vary depending on when you want to leave. The bus station in Luxembourg is also further outside the city (P+R Bouillon) so you’ll most like have to take public transit to the city centre. You can check the Flixbus schedule here .

So we opted to take the train from Brussels to Luxembourg…

The train trip is a bit over 3 hours each way (although you also have to watch out some are MUCH longer!). You can walk from the train station in Luxembourg to the city centre (Gare Centrale routière). To make the most out of your day, you’ll want to take the earliest train at 7 A.M. and the last train back at 8:00 P.M. Find train tickets from Brussels to Luxembourg here .

From the train station, it’s a 15-minute walk to the city centre. Or you can opt for one of the countless buses headed that way (remember they’re free!).

Day Trip To Luxembourg From Brussels Train Hack

We noticed it’s not always cheaper to buy a direct train ticket from Brussels to Luxembourg. If you’re under 26 (see discount tickets here ), or if you’re travelling on the weekend (see discount tickets here ), it’s might be cheaper for you to buy 2 separate train tickets. Let me explain…

Direct trains from Brussels to Luxembourg will always make a final stop in Arlon, Belgium before making it to Luxembourg. So buy one train ticket from Brussels to Arlon, which will give you the Belgian train discounts for youths or weekend travel. Then buy another ticket from Arlon to Luxembourg (about €7 each way).

Just double check that the train number is the same for Brussels to Luxembourg and Arlon to Luxembourg before you buy any ticket (you don’t have to switch trains in Arlon). We did this both ways and had no issues, we just showed a different ticket for each leg of the trip.

Final Option: Go On An Organized Tour From Brussels To Luxembourg

If taking the train from Brussels to Luxembourg sounds too hectic for a day trip, you can also go on an organized tour. Viator offers several organized tours that leave from Brussels and bring you to Luxembourg. They also plan the entire day in Luxembourg for you, taking you to all the main points of interest.

This is a totally stress free way of going on a day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels.

Brussels to Luxembourg Organized Tours

Understanding luxembourg city: haute ville & the grund.

If you haven’t already noticed, Luxembourg is built on a hill, which naturally creates a separation between two parts of the city, Haute Ville and the Grund.

Luxembourg City Haute Ville

This is the city centre, and where the bourgeoisie used to live. Nowadays, you’ll find all the main attractions here, like the Grand Duchy and the Notre Dame Cathedral .

It only takes 10 minutes to walk from side to side of Haute Ville in Luxembourg City – yup, it’s that small! The nicest part is that the centre is car-free. Several blocks surrounding Place d’Armes are pedestrian only streets, which are filled with shops and restaurants.

Luxembourg City The Grund

The Grund, a.k.a the lower village, used to be where the poor and servants of the bourgeoisie lived. Although today it’s equally as expensive as Haute Ville.

The Grund offers breathtaking views of Haute Ville. You’ll want to make sure to walk along the Alzette river and find the purple Mermaid statue across from Abbey Neimënster .

This statue represents Luxembourg’s Count Sigfried’s wife Melusina. After several years of marriage, Sigfried discovered she was actually a mermaid and was never seen again.

How To Get From Haute Ville To The Grund

To get from Haute Ville to the Grund in Luxembourg City you have a few options. The most picturesque is to walk along Rue de la Corniche (which I recommend doing either way!).

But if you need a break from walking, Luxembourg offers a free elevator you can take. You’ll find it near Luxembourg’s Parliament in Haute Ville, and off of Rue Schmëdo in the Grund.

On the walking tour, you should make it to the following places: Place d’Armes, The Grand Ducal Palace, Bock and Casemates, St Michael’s Cathedral, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Golden Lady Memorial Statue.

There are a few different attractions you can pay to visit if you have some more time in Luxembourg.

Take The Pfaffenthal Lift

If you find yourself in the Pfaffenthal area of Luxembourg (in the lower valley) there’s a free glass elevator, (but don’t worry the floor is solid) so you get to experience going up with amazing views. Once you get to the top there’s a section with a glass floor that you can stand on.

Explore Bock Casemates

You’ll definitely want to make it to the Bock at one point during your day. These old castle ruins used to be connected to the fortress that surrounded the city, and it offers some of the best views of the city.

Underneath the Bock is where you’ll find the casemates. This is a network of underground tunnels where citizens used to hide during wartime and store food and supplies.

Visit The City History Museum Luxembourg

This was one of my favourite historical museums I’ve ever visited. The museum itself is actually built into the side of the hill. When you go down the elevator, you’re surrounded by the rocks of the hill.

The content of the museum covered how the city was established and grew throughout the years up until present day.

But the best part was the price! We had free access because I’m a youth (under 26) and my boyfriend is a student. But if you don’t fit into either of those categories, it’s still only €5! They even give you a free audio guide (just make sure to bring earphones).

The tour is 45 minutes, taking you to the highlights of the museum. But there’s a lot more to peruse at your own pace.

Where To Eat In Luxembourg City

According to our tour guide, most restaurants open for lunch from 12:00 -2:00 P.M. then close their kitchens until supper time around 6:00 P.M.. This might be normal for you, but this isn’t the case for North America.  

This is important to be aware of – for example, we needed to eat earlier than 6:00 P.M. in order to catch our return train at 7:00 P.M. to Brussels. We ate at Bosso Brasserie – the kitchen opened at 5:30! We weren’t disappointed with our choice either, they served more local food, and was a bit cheaper than what we were seeing around us. 

For coffee, we found local Luxembourg chain, Knopes (and by chain, I mean there are only 3 of them in the city). We went to the one on Porte-Neuve, just off the main street in the city centre so it was a bit more quiet.

P.S. Apparently the night life in Luxembourg also isn’t much to boast about unless it’s Saturday.

Luxembourg Hotel Recommendations

I didn’t stay overnight in Luxembourg as I had an apartment in Brussels, but if you want to extend your stay in Luxembourg and enjoy some of the nightlife here are some hotel recommendations.

A great option in the city centre is Grand Hotel Cravat . It’s right off the main shopping street in Luxembourg, you can’t get a better location than this! See room rates & availability .

If you’re willing to stay a bit further outside of the city centre (but still only a 15 minute walk away) you won’t be disappointed with Les Jardins d’Anaïs . One thing I love about traveling in Europe is how easy it is to get from one country to another! I still haven't visited either Belgium or Luxembourg, but they're both on my list. I actually had no idea that there was a "Luxembourgish" language!!

Quick & Easy Day Trip to Luxembourg: How to Guide + Itinerary

I don’t know about you, but I love fitting additional countries into my travels whenever I can, so obviously I was excited to add a day trip to Luxembourg to my Amsterdam/Belgium trip. And that’s the beauty of Europe—tiny countries connected by efficient transportation networks. (Well, that and 3-hour lunches followed by 3-hour naps, of course.)

For this reason, a day trip to Luxembourg is a quick, easy, and exciting addition to places like Brussels , Frankfurt, and Paris . I personally took my Luxembourg day trip after my travels around Belgium and before my visit to Amsterdam . The country of Luxembourg was thus the cream to my cultural Oreo.

So to help you add a little sweetness to your Europe vacation, here’s all you need to know about visiting Luxembourg for a day.

7 things to know about Luxembourg before your day trip

You’ll get to learn and experience a lot on your day trip to Luxembourg, but you should still know a few things first. Here are 7 major things that make Luxembourg, Luxembourg.  

1. Its location makes it great for a day trip.

Before you book that trip though, you should first know how long a day trip to Luxembourg is actually going to take you. Luxembourg is conveniently located between many popular tourist destinations, so cheers to that! Here’s how long it takes to get to Luxembourg from:

• Brussels : 2.5 hours by car /  3.5 hours by train
• Paris : 3.5-4 hours by car /  about 2.5 hours by direct train
• Amsterdam : 4.5 hours by car /  6 hours by train (I talk more about this below)
• Frankfurt : 3 hours by car / 3.5-5 hours by train
• Cologne : 3 hours by car / 4-5 hours by train
• Strasbourg : 2.5 hours by car /  2.5 by train

Keep in mind that taking a day trip to Luxembourg doesn’t necessarily mean you have to return to the same place you started. Don’t forget you can spend one day in Luxembourg on the way to somewhere else. Maybe on the way from Paris to Frankfurt, for example, trading in snails for schnitzels.

2. Luxembourg is small. Nay, tiny.

Luxembourg is one of those tiny, can barely be called a country countries in Europe. In fact, it’s the 7th smallest in Europe. It’s only about the size of Rhode Island, which just happens to be the smallest US state. It’s also one of the least populous countries in Europe with a (2021) population of just over 640,000.

Luxembourg’s tiny size actually makes it the perfect destination for a day trip. Or as I like to call it, Fun Size.

3. Luxembourg has a Grand Duke.

Instead of a president, king, prime minister, or great and powerful wizard, Luxembourg is run by a Grand Duke. This makes Luxembourg a Grand Duchy—the world’s only remaining one, in fact. This is useful information if you watch Jeopardy! a lot. Trust me on that.

Worth noting : While ‘Duke’ is pronounce dook , ‘Duchy’ is pronounced Dutch-y . Not dook-y . Just want to make that clear. Consider that a pro tip.

4. Luxembourg has 3 official languages.

Because Luxembourg is sandwiched between Germany, France, and Belgium, it thus has three official languages—German, French, and Luxembourgish. As if being called a Duchy wasn’t adorable enough.

But yes, you can take a day trip to Luxembourg and get around just fine with speaking only English.

5. Luxembourg is RICH. Like Richie Rich rich.

Luxembourg is one of the richest countries in the world. It’s one of those financial capitals where rich people go to swan dive into their money pits, like Switzerland or wherever George Clooney’s yacht is parked at the moment.

Luxembourg actually has one of the world’s highest GDP per capita which, loosely translated, means * eyes popping out of my head with dollar signs where pupils used to be. *

Regardless of what life is like here for the people in Luxembourg (just mani/pedis all day, I assume), a day trip to Luxembourg is a great way to sample the sweet, financially-secure life.

6. Luxembourg’s capital is Luxembourg City.

To keep it as easy as possible for you on your day trip, Luxembourg’s capital city is just called Luxembourg City. Quick and easy, I tell ya. (What else are you going to name the capital of a country you can walk across before lunch?)

Even more interesting is that, along with Brussels (Belgium) and Strasbourg (France), Luxembourg City is one of the three capitals of the European Union. This means a lot of important (ahem $$$) stuff takes place and/or is headquartered here.

7. Luxembourg is one third of the Benelux trio.

Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgium together form the Benelux union. Benelux is the “formal international intergovernmental cooperation” of those three countries.

This union helped jumpstart what we know today as the Schengen Region (i.e., the reason you almost never get your passport stamped). It was the first multi-country economic integration to happen after WWII. As Belgium themselves put it, this union works to break down borders between nations to increase “prosperity, mobility, safety, and sustainability for everyone.” And that’s beautiful.

Is Luxembourg worth visiting?

If you’re still torn as to whether or not you should take a day trip to Luxembourg, let me clue you in on a few things that make this country so very cool. Here are 5 reasons to visit Luxembourg.

1. Luxembourg is a quick and easy day trip.

Look, I know that’s what this whole post is about, but I’m going to sum it up here. Luxembourg is small enough that you can see a good amount and still feel like you’ve “been to Luxembourg.”

It’s also super clean and just an overall easy place to visit. It’s not chaotic and stressful like, well just about anywhere in Italy , or spread out like Paris, or packed with too many awesome things to do like Mexico City . Luxembourg is juuuust right (for a day trip).

If you have a car of your own, you’ll be able to drive to its many worthwhile sites in just minutes. If not, Luxembourg is just as easily accessible by (free) public transportation .

2. Luxembourg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has earned the designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site because:

Despite the many assaults from the 15th to the 18th century and the systematic dismantling in the late 19th century, the old quarters and fortifications of the City of Luxembourg enable a complete representation of its historical significance as a fortress and historic city. In fact, one of the highlights is that Luxembourg has between 90-130 castles! That’s like a castle per person! And yes, you will be able to see a couple of these even on a quick day trip. They’re everywhere, as you can imagine.

3. History nerds, rejoice!

Yes, medieval/castle-y history, but also everything from 5,000 BCE to World War II too. For starters, Luxembourg has museums dedicated to the Battle of Bulge and the American cemetery where General Patton is buried.

4. Foodies, you can rejoice too!

Remember when I said Luxembourg is rich? As a result, this tiny country also has the highest density of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world (52). That’s like, a Michelin-starred restaurant per person!

Besides that, in 2008 Luxembourg’s Restaurant Chiggeri became the Guinness World Record holder for having the most wines on its wine list. ( 1,746 bottles of wine on the wall… 1,746 bottles of wine… )

5. Luxembourg’s storybook setting

Despite all those castles Luxembourg has, even its non-castle architecture is of the “fairytale” variety. That and the multi-layered setting it’s in make it one of the most picturesque places I’ve ever been.

But is it worth taking just a day trip to Luxembourg?

Okay, so Luxembourg is great and all, but is it worth visiting if you only have one day to spare? And the answer is, of course! You won’t be able to visit all 130 castles, but you will still have enough time to get a good sampling of what Luxembourg is all about. The main city is compact enough that it’s perfect for a day if that’s all you have.

Yes, take a day trip to Luxembourg if…

1. You simply want to scratch a new country off your list.

I’m a country-counter and not afraid to admit it. After finding out that taking a day trip to Luxembourg is something people do when they visit Brussels, it took me all of 3 seconds to add that to my itinerary.

Being able to combine multiple destinations in one trip is basically my bread and butter. And by that I mean, sometimes that’s all I eat so I can afford to visit these Richie Rich places.

2. You’ve always been curious about Luxembourg

Luxembourg is the kind of magical place you never hear about in the news or in other people’s vacation recaps. You literally only hear about it on Jeopardy! Doesn’t that make you curious to visit? If you want to know what all the hella rich hubbub is about, why not carve out a day trip to Luxembourg?

3. You’re into visiting noteworthy World War II sites

Okay I know this is largely “just me,” but really though. The Battle of the Bulge was kind of a big deal. The history geeks in your travel party will appreciate this one; I promise.

4. You’re already visiting the Netherlands and Belgium.

Come on, you’ve gotta complete the Benelux trifecta. You can’t have snap and crackle without pop. You can’t play rock and paper without scissors. I don’t think the Luxembourgers would like it if you wore just 2/3 of a three-piece suit.

If you’ll already be in the Netherlands and Belgium, you might as well take a day trip to Luxembourg too.

But pass on a Luxembourg day trip if…

1. You prefer a slower pace of trave l – As small as it is, you could still spend a week in Luxembourg. (That’s like, 18.5 castles a day!)

2. You’re one of those people who don’t think spending just one day in a country counts as having “been there.” (You do you then.)

3. The passport stamp is all you’re after – Because, no, you can’t get your passport stamped on a day trip to Luxembourg. I know, super upsetting.

Before my day trip to Luxembourg I’d been led to believe I’d be able to get my passport stamped here if I brought it to the tourism office. Instead, all I got was some very weird looks and a full-on brush-off.

I’d been misled, so I’m going to make sure you are not. Unfortunately, no, you cannot pop into the tourism office and get yourself a Luxembourg passport stamp. This isn’t Liechtenstein, after all. Pshh. (Yes, you can totally do this on a day trip to Liechtenstein though!)

Is Luxembourg expensive to visit?

Well, that depends. To me, someone who lives in Boston , the prices in Luxembourg are about the same as here. (Which, yeah, are high AF.) In my experience, Luxembourg isn’t quite as expensive as Iceland , but it’s also nowhere near being a budget-friendly destination like Prague .

The metric I personally use for judging how expensive a destination is, is the cost of a cheeseburger. The cheeseburger I had at Urban in Luxembourg City cost $19. Do with that information what you will.

However, parking in Luxembourg is more than reasonably cheap . (I regularly pay $40 to park in Boston even for just two hours.) And public transportation here (all buses, trains, and trams) is totally free !

Best time to visit Luxembourg

Given its location, the best time to visit Luxembourg for the best weather would be from around May – October . Obviously the summer is going to be the most enjoyable, but it will also be the most crowded time to visit Luxembourg. But if you want to take a tour of the royal palace, you can only do that in July and August and the first half of September.

I personally visited at the end of March/beginning of April . During that time the city was pretty low-key without a lot of tourists around the city. The weather was chilly and, as you can see from the photos, a bit overcast at times though we did get a little sun.

Unfortunately though the trees and flowers hadn’t really bloomed yet. If I were to spend a day in Luxembourg again, I’d like to go a little closer to the summer to see this beautiful city in full bloom and blue skies!

Places to visit in Luxembourg in one day

Because you’ll only have one day in Luxembourg, my recommendation is to come up with what kind of “theme” you want your trip to have. In other words, will your trip be based on:

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see it all in a single day, so narrowing down exactly what you want out of your day trip to Luxembourg will help you make the most of your time. Here’s a brief breakdown of what you can see and do with each theme:

Luxembourg castles

Unless you’ll be in Luxembourg for 130 days, you probably won’t have time to visit all of Luxembourg’s castles. Instead, concentrate your time at these top options:

• Vianden Castle – What you think of as a fairytale castle, in a perfectly enchanted setting. And getting to Vianden from Luxembourg City is fairly easy thanks to the free public transportation.
• Bourscheid Castle – Luxembourg’s biggest castle located on a mist-covered hill.
• Chateau de Clervaux – It’s cool if you like picturesque chateaux and all. Whatever.

Luxembourg WWII sites

The most popular WWII-related things to do in Luxembourg are:

• Luxembourg American Cemetery – Final resting place of more than 5,000 American soldiers killed during the Battle of the Bulge.
• Grave of General George S. Patton – He actually died in Luxembourg after the war (and under mysterious circumstances, mind you).
• National Museum of Military History – Focuses mainly on the Battle of the Bulge.

Luxembourg food and wine

This is what I concentrated on during my day trip, and what I’m guessing you’re planning to concentrate on too. In that case, read on for the best things to do with just one day in Luxembourg City.

One day in Luxembourg City: things to do

With just one day here, here are the most noteworthy things to do in Luxembourg:

The Old Town & City Center

Like every other city in Europe, Luxembourg’s Old Town is where you want to be. Here in the old town you’ll be able to just stroll and check out the architecture , explore the 17 th century Notre Dame Cathedral , and see the Grand Duke’s Royal Palace (and the royal guard who I was told guards absolutely nothing).

Luxembourg’s many museums

As small as it is, Luxembourg has a relative ton of museums. Some of the most popular include:

• The National Museum of Art and History (Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art) – Free art museum dedicated to Luxembourg’s art and history, obviously.
• Lëtzebuerg City Museum (the Luxembourg City History Museum) – If you want to know more about Luxembourg’s history, go here.
• Musée Dräi Eechelen – The medieval history of Luxembourg told inside a cool fortress.
• Neimënster – You can take guided tours of the Benedictine Abbey that’s in all your pictures.

Luxembourg City is a super photogenic town and there are plenty of places from which to get amazing views. You can find the the best views in Luxembourg here:

• Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator – Glass elevator that takes you up 233 feet in the city center. (One of the newest attractions in Luxembourg and free to use!)
• Chemin de la Corniche – Known as the “most beautiful balcony in Europe.”
• The Bock Casemates – Excellent views of Luxembourg City from this ancient fortress once used to defend the city.

1-day Luxembourg itinerary

A lot of this will depend on when you arrive and when you need to leave, but ideally your one day Luxembourg itinerary should go something like this:

1. Bock Promontory

Head first to the Bock Promontory and Casemates . From here you’ll get to experience some of Luxembourg’s history and get a fantastic view over the city and the Neimënster Abbey . Quite an introduction!

2. Walk the Chemin de la Corniche

Leave the Bock and walk along the Chemin de la Corniche , a beautiful promenade that offers even more stunning views of the town. Honestly, I couldn’t believe how beautiful this simple little walk was.

3. Luxembourg Old Town

From there it’s just a short walk to Luxembourg’s Old Town . Pop into the Notre Dame Cathedral then check out Place d’Armes , the city’s main square. Head north one block to stroll along the Grand-Rue , the city’s pedestrian-only shopping street.

4. Palais Grand-Duchal

Your next stop should be the Palais Grand-Ducal , the palace of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Just from the outside this building is impressive, which is good because that’s probably as far as you’ll get.

However, they do offer guided tours from the middle of July until the beginning of September. (Ticket sales start at the end of June.) If you’ll be taking your day trip to Luxembourg during this time, definitely book a tour of the palace because WOWZA.

5. Time for lunch!

Take your pick from any number of restaurants in central Luxembourg City. Or follow in my footsteps and have a more casual lunch at Urban Bar and Restaurant , just around the corner from the palace. (It’s delish!)

6. Pick a museum

If you’re a museum lover, pick a museum that sounds interesting to you for after lunch. I mentioned a few earlier, but you can find an entire list of Luxembourg museums here .

7. Place de la Constitution

After your museum visit (or after lunch if you skip the museums), walk over to Place de la Constitution .

Besides all the meaning behind this memorial square (more war stuff – if you wanna know, let’s chat!) you can also get great views over the Pétrusse Valley here of the tower spire of the Bank Museum (of course there’s a bank museum!) and the Adolphe Bridge .

8. Grund district

From Place de la Constitution, head over to the Cité Judiciaire á Luxembourg at the Plateau du Saint-Esprit. From there, you can take the free public elevator down to the lower part of the city—the Grund district , the self-proclaimed most authentic part of the city.

Down here, take a leisurely 10-minute walk through the neighborhoods and streets that are just too cute to be real. Make your way down to the river, past the monastery , and towards the Melusina Statue —the pink mermaid under the willow tree. (My favorite spot in Luxembourg City.)

9. Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator

From the Melusina, another 10 scenic minutes will take you to the Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator . This glass elevator is free to ride and will take you back up to the high part of Luxembourg City via a super scenic ride.

10. Time for dinner!

Luxembourg City is your dining oyster! There are too many great places here to narrow it down. I mean, you’re in a country that’s part French and part German—the food is bound to be amazing wherever you go. Head back towards the Old Town and check out which restaurants look the best.

Luxembourg walking tours

If you’d like to leave navigation of the city to someone else on your day trip to Luxembourg (and I don’t blame you), check out these available Luxembourg walking tours: (I did a walking tour of Luxembourg City myself and it was so stress-free!)

1. Luxembourg City Walking and Wine Tasting Tour – This small-group 2-hour guided tour visits the city’s top sights, provides commentary so you can learn about all the stuff you’re seeing, and includes a tasting of some Luxembourg wines.

2. Luxembourg City Guided Walking and Cultural Tour – The same as above, just without the wine. A no-nonsense 2.5-hour guided city walking tour to Luxembourg’s main sights with great reviews!

Day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels

Taking a day trip to Luxembourg is actually one of the most popular things to do when visiting Belgium. It seems almost mandatory actually; it’s in the title of the guidebooks for Pete’s sake.

If you want to make a day trip to Luxembourg, Brussels is your best starting point because it’s the closest and most accessible major city. ( And because Brussels isn’t all that exciting. You’ll probably be looking for excuses to leave anyway.)

Brussels to Luxembourg by car

Driving from Brussels to Luxembourg City will take you somewhere between 2 and 3 hours each way. If you have your own car, fantastic! You’ll have the chance to visit more of Luxembourg outside the city and you’ll likely have even more time to spend in Luxembourg since your day won’t be dictated by transportation schedules.

The drive is pretty straightforward and there are parking lots and garages all over Luxembourg City. They even have this handy website that tells you how many spots are left in each lot, in real time.

Brussels to Luxembourg by train

Taking the train from Brussels to Luxembourg is just as quick and easy. Via the direct train you can get there in about 3 hours and the ticket will cost you just $27. (Getting back is close to the same.) You can check their current schedules and prices here .

As of this posting, the first train of the day from Brussels to Luxembourg is 5:33am, and the last train from Luxembourg back to Brussels is 8:11pm. So you could potentially arrive in Luxembourg around 9am and have about 11 hours to spend there.

Keep in mind that without a car you’ll have to spend most of your day trip to Luxembourg within the city limits and much of your day will be determined by the train schedule. But, you won’t have to deal with driving, parking, construction, etc.

From Luxembourg’s main train station, it’s just a 20-minute walk into the city center, or you can always grab a taxi as well. They even have Uber there.

Brussels to Luxembourg day tours

Another option that requires the least amount of money, stress, and planning is to take an organized day trip to Luxembourg from Brussels from a reputable tour company. This is the route I took because sometimes I do prefer the path of least resistance.

I really enjoyed my Brussels to Luxembourg day tour and would highly recommend it to anyone. We had a private bus, our own guide who led us on an entertaining walking tour of Luxembourg City (and had a beer with us later on), plenty of free time to explore the city on our own, an extra stop in the beautiful town of Dinant, and we even saved a dog’s life on the way back to Brussels! All-in-all, a satisfying, rewarding, and perfect day trip to Luxembourg.

There are a few organized day tours from Brussels, but the one I personally took is this Dinant and Luxembourg Day Trip from Brussels . This is the most popular and well-reviewed option and I can attest to how quick and easy it is! We saw all the major sites, ate some excellent food, and all for so cheap!

Day trip to Luxembourg from Amsterdam

Unfortunately, taking a day trip to Luxembourg from Amsterdam probably isn’t the best idea. At least, not unless you plan to spend the night in Luxembourg.

There are actually a lot of searches for Amsterdam to Luxembourg day trips, and this is kind of shocking considering the distance between the two cities. Your entire day would be spent in the car with the exception of like two hours in Luxembourg. Here me out…

Amsterdam to Luxembourg by car

Even if you have your own car, driving from Amsterdam to Luxembourg will take around 4.5 hours each way . Yes, you can technically make it to Luxembourg and back in a single day, but that doesn’t leave much time to actually spend in Luxembourg. And that’s on a good day, without traffic or having to stop to save a dog’s life.

Amsterdam to Luxembourg by train

The quickest train from Amsterdam to Luxembourg is still 6.5 hours and includes a change, each way. And it costs $80, each way. And the last train back is at 6:00pm. (For the record, you could totally rent a car for cheaper than that and drive yourself anyway.)

Clearly, a day trip to Luxembourg from Amsterdam is not ideal. If, let’s say, visiting Luxembourg is the last item on your bucket list and this will be your last chance ever, then sure, go for it! Otherwise, maybe just take a day trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof instead.  

Day trip to Luxembourg from Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Germany is another city that’s not too far from Luxembourg to make a day trip there too unreasonable. The drive from Frankfurt to Luxembourg averages about 3 hours each way.

There are no direct trains between Frankfurt and Luxembourg, and a one-way trip will take between 4-5 hours and cost between $35 – $60. So even though it’s relatively close, the logistics just aren’t where you’d want them to be for a day trip.

That being said, if you have your own car and the motivation to do it, you can definitely squeeze in a day trip to Luxembourg from Frankfurt.

Paris to Luxembourg day trip

At around 4 hours each way, driving to Luxembourg from Paris, like Amsterdam, wouldn’t really leave you much time in Luxembourg to make a day trip worthwhile. That also depends on where in Paris you’re leaving from since even getting from one side of the city to the other can take quite a while.

However, this is where things get interesting. The train from Paris to Luxembourg is much faster at about 2.5 hours direct each way. So, your opportunity for a Paris to Luxembourg day trip just opened back up! These super fast train tickets aren’t cheap though—ranging from $90 to around $120 each way.

Cologne to Luxembourg day trip

Cologne, Germany is another nearby city from which you can take a reasonably quick day trip to Luxembourg. The drive between these two cities is just about 2.5 hours. Getting from Cologne to Luxembourg via train averages 3.5 hours each way and costs between $40-$50.

Strasbourg to Luxembourg day trip

Strasbourg, France is another popular tourist destination that isn’t too far from Luxembourg. This drive takes around 2.5 hours also.

There’s even a direct train from Strasbourg to Luxembourg that takes just 1.75 hours and costs $50. However, the earliest it leaves is 12:30pm and the latest it returns is 6:45pm. You wouldn’t arrive in Luxembourg City until the afternoon, but that still gives you about 4 hours to work with so if that works for you, set it up!

Where to stay in Luxembourg City

If you wanted to visit Luxembourg from Amsterdam, Frankfurt, or another city that’s just a wee bit too far for a day trip, consider spending the night so you can still get your visit in. Here are a few well-reviewed hotels in Luxembourg City to consider.

Budget : Youth Hostel Luxembourg City – Helloooo budget destination prices! Just a 10-minute walk from Place d’Armes, free private parking, city views.

Mid-range : Hotel Parc Belle-Vue – Panoramic terrace, their own restaurant, private parking, and a 24-hour front desk.

High-end : Le Royal Hotels & Resort Luxembourg – Basically right there in Place d’Armes, newly renovated rooms, full wellness/spa facilities, on-site bar and restaurant, and all the fun extras.

What to pack for a day trip to Luxembourg

For your day trip to Luxembourg, here are a few essential packing items to consider:

European plug adapter(s) so you can charge all your devices. Even if you don’t plan to stay the night, I would still bring a charger with you since it’s going to be a long day.

Luxembourg guidebook for all the extra stuff. I personally have the Rough Guide to Belgium which includes Luxembourg but so does the Lonely Planet version.

Comfortable shoes because there’s going to be so much walking. In warm weather I always wear either Teva sandals or Chacos . In cold/wet weather I wear Sorel duck boots .

Anti-theft purse because petty theft is the signature theft of Europe. I’m not saying you have to particularly be on the lookout in Luxembourg, but I’m not saying you don’t either. Besides, anywhere you go in Europe you need to keep yourself and your valuables safe. I have gear from both Travelon and PacSafe and I swear by them both.

Refillable water bottle so you can stay hydrated throughout your day trip to Luxembourg—on the walking tours, on the bus rides, always.

One day in Luxembourg Itinerary: A perfect Luxembourg day trip

Tucked between Belgium, France, and Germany is the gorgeous little European nation of Luxembourg. As it’s located very close to Belgium, you can effortlessly take a day trip from Brussels . And this one day in Luxembourg itinerary is perfect for that.

If you are staying in Luxembourg for longer, we suggest venturing outside of Luxembourg City and exploring the countryside. We have included Luxembourg day trip ideas and travel tips as well. Luxembourg’s capital is Luxembourg City.

One Day in Luxembourg Itinerary: Perfect Luxembourg day trip

Luxembourg means ‘Lucilinburhc’ or little fortress. Truly its history can be traced back to 963 AD when the territory around the castle or the fortress was discovered and ruled by Siegfried I of Ardennes.

Today, Luxembourg is ONE of the richest countries in the world. It is also culturally diverse and plays an important role in the United Nations and European politics. 

Did you know, “The Schengen Visa that is required to travel to Europe from non visa exempt countries, was signed in Luxembourg, in a small town of Schengen?” Hence the name. Learn more fun facts about Luxembourg here

There are many ways to reach Luxembourg. You can fly to Luxembourg City and either drive to the city center or take public transit. Public transport like buses -16, 9, and 114, operate every 15 minutes or so from the Luxembourg Findel airport to the city centre. The fare is 2 euros one way. Travel time is 30 minutes.

Airport taxis are available. Rates start at 30 euros and it takes 30 minutes to arrive at the Luxembourg City center. You can also book a private airport transfer here

Due to Luxembourg’s close proximity to countries like France, Germany , and Belgium, you can definitely drive down to the capital city for a weekend or a day trip.

If you are driving or taking the train to Luxembourg City, you will be traveling for 2- 4 hours depending on your train station and the city of departure. Once you arrive in Luxembourg, head to the city center to start exploring.

Doing a hop on and hop off sightseeing tour is an option for those who wish to experience a quick glimpse of the city, before settling into exploring the old town area. Book your sightseeing tour here .

Luxembourg City is composed of upper and lower levels. And the city is quite small and you will be perfectly fine exploring the city by walking.

If you are driving to Luxembourg City, we recommend starting your sightseeing at the Ville Haute Quarter via the Passerelle Bridge (Luxembourg Viaduct). This quarter houses the historical center of Luxembourg and has a UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

So, let’s start with the best.

Gelle Fra (Golden Lady) – The Monument of Remembrance

When you arrive at the Ville Haute Quarter, look for a tall monument with a golden lady. This monument is called the Monument of Remembrance. It is a war memorial dedicated to the Luxembourgers who served in the armed forces of the two World Wars and the Korean War.

Gëlle Fra is Luxembourgish for Golden Lady. There are souvenir stores located near the Gëlle Fra statue as well. If you are driving to Luxembourg City or taking a guided tour, you can park your car here. All tourist buses also stop at the Gëlle Fra.

Place de la Constitution

Place de la Constitution (or Constitution Square) contains a memorial dedicated to the heroes of World War II. The square consists of manicured gardens and multiple Luxembourg flags that flutter against the backdrop of bridges and dense forests.

The valley that you see below is the Petrusse Valley.

You can also see a bridge – it is called the Adolphe Bridge, which is a Luxembourg landmark. You will see stunning views of the city from here, also perfect for taking postcard pictures.

Place Guillaume II and Chocolate House

Within Ville Haute quarter is Place Guillaume II – a town square filled with markets, cafes, and gourmet stores and shops offering local products made in Luxembourg. 

The Chocolate House located here is a great place for a quick coffee and a bite to eat before you start walking into the heart of the old town. This little bake shop has chocolates and a wide variety of cakes. Their interiors are super pretty.

Visit the Notre Dame Cathedral – Luxembourg Itinerary

Notre Dame Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church in Luxembourg City. This is the only cathedral in the country of Luxembourg. The cathedral is a great example of Gothic architecture intermixed with Renaissance elements.

The church’s construction began in 1613 under Father Francois Aldenard (Jesuits). The church underwent major expansions from 1953 to 1938. The church has 3 towers – Jesuit church, a bell tower, and a third tower that stands over the transept. We do recommend taking a quick visit to the cathedral before heading on to other tourist attractions.

Palace of Grand Dukes (Palais Grand-Ducal)

Did you know that Luxembourg is called the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and it is the only Grand Duchy in the world?

The Palace of the Grand Dukes or the Palais Grand-Ducal is located in the old town center of Luxembourg. It is the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. And this is where the Duke performs his duties as head of state. You will find 2 guards at the palace entrance.

The palace is not open to the public at all times of the year. Guided tours to the palace are offered from mid-July to August only.

Luxembourg City Museum 

There are two museums in the heart of Luxembourg old town that is worth visiting. The buildings where the museums are housed had undergone tremendous changes over the decades. It was used as a monastery once upon a time and as separate prison for men and women.

The Luxembourg City Museum (Musee d’ Histoire de la Ville) displays the rich history of Luxembourg via permanent and temporary exhibitions. The museum is a combination of old and the new – a Middle Ages building with modern glass cage life – which offers panoramic and stunning views of the city of Luxembourg.

The museum is open every day except Mondays. The hours are 10:00 am to 06:00 pm. The entry fee is around 5 euros.

National Museum of Art and History and the Fish Market

The Fish Market was originally supposed to be the historical center of the Old Town. The markets here were established at the forecourt of the castles of the Dukes. This area was lined with businesses, including an old market – called the cheese market.

These buildings lining the square at the Fish Market are of great historical value. The National Museum of History and Art (Musee National d’ Histoire et d’Art) is located here. It is a small museum displaying artwork. You can visit the museum for free. Special exhibitions entry fee is 7 euros.

Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art: If you have additional time on your hands, or planning to extend your Luxembourg itinerary to two or more days, then consider visiting the newly opened Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (opened in 2006). 

Known as Mudam, this is a museum of modern art in Luxembourg City, and it is about a 30-minute walk from the central attractions we have mentioned in this guide so far. You can also reach there by car in under 10 minutes if keen on visiting. 

Mudam is located on the site of the old Fort Thüngen, in Luxembourg’s Clausen quarter. There is an entry ticket to view the complex which is filled with amazing architecture and statues.

Place d Armes for lunch – One day in Luxembourg itinerary

Head to the Place d’ Armes for lunch, before further exploration. The Place d’Armes is a square in the old town, which attracts a large number of locals and visitors.

Place d’Armes originally served as a parade ground for troops defending the city.

Today it pulls visitors during summers, and during winters there are Christmas markets and holiday celebrations at the square.

The square is surrounded by numerous cafés and restaurants, so a perfect place for lunch. Specialty restaurants are a tad pricier than in Belgium. There are fast food and food stall options available at the square as well (budget eating).

There is an administrative building located at the eastern end of Arms Square. It is the Palais Municipal or Cercle municipal.

Casemates du Bock

One of the most formidable fortresses in Europe is the Bock, located in Luxembourg City. Casemates du Bock is a complex of underground tunnels and galleries. In recent history, the casemates du Bock were used as World War II bomb shelters.

Bock’s history can be traced back to the 10th century. It was here that Count Siegfried built his Castle of  Lucilinburhuc in 963 A.D., thus laying the foundation of the town of Luxembourg. The Bock serves as a natural defensive fort, with rocky cliffs towering over the River Alzette.

The Bock’s casemates (casemates are fortified gun emplacements) were erected by the Spanish in the 17th century. These casemates helped the Bock resist a 7-month siege by the French Republicans. So much so that in the later years, the Casemates du Bock were ordered to be destroyed so that they could no longer be used as a defense fort.

Today, visitors can explore the old castle ruins and the various underground tunnels and cannon galleries. You can also descend from the heights of the Bock to explore the valley below.

You can visit the Casemates du Bock for 7 euros (for adult entry). They are open every day from 10:00 am to 08:30 pm. Keep in mind, there are tunnels at the Bock casemates and the ground is rocky and uneven, so wear comfortable shoes.

Walk the Chemin de la Corniche

Chemin de la Corniche is a bridge built over the Alzette River, offering you the finest views of Luxembourg City. This is a MUST see tourist spot to view the beautiful valley and take stunning pictures.

The Grund – Highlight of One Day in Luxembourg itinerary

One of the highlights of our Luxembourg itinerary was visiting the Grund. The Grund is a historic quarter located in the lower part of Luxembourg City. There are many things to see and explore at the Grund. We definitely recommend taking a walking tour of the old town.

The Grund neighborhood is pedestrian-friendly and is filled with cobblestone lanes from the 10th century. We recommend taking a stroll and getting lost in their calm and scenic blocks.

As you wander the lanes, you will see the Pétrusse River flowing through the historical ruins and ultimately joining the Alzette (Uelzecht).

One of the MOST popular spots in the Grund is the Neumünster Abbey . The Neumünster Abbey is a bright yellow Benedictine monastery. The abbey had undergone tremendous change over the years – it functioned as an abbey, a police station, and a state prison, including serving as an army barrack.

Today there are exhibitions and workshops and meetups held at the abbey. The abbey also hosts cultural and musical events like the Jazz festival.

We actually spent a lot of time at the Grund – admiring the gardens and lanes.

As the Grund is located at the lower level of Luxembourg City, you will either have to hike or take a lift from the upper level. Pfaffenthal Lift is the answer to that. Pfaffenthal Lift is a glass elevator connecting the “Pescatore” park to the Pfaffenthal area at the bottom of the Alzette Valley.

The glass elevator offers mesmerizing views of the valley and the historical center. You can use the elevator free of charge and it is open till 01:00 am at night. (Note: On the first Monday of the month, it undergoes maintenance work and will be closed). We recommend walking down from the upper valley and then taking the lift back up.

It was late evening by the time we finished exploring. There are options for food in the lower valley. There is a one-star Michelin restaurant and other multi-cuisine varieties to choose from.

Or using the lift you can either head to the upper valley for dinner and then drive away from the parking lot (Ville Haute Quarter).

Day Trips from Luxembourg City 

You can extend your one day in Luxembourg Itinerary by exploring nearby areas and taking day trips. Luxembourg is easily connected by road and train systems in Europe. If your base city is in Luxembourg then definitely explore the nearby countries to maximize your stay. Here are some of the cities that are worth taking a road trip or a train ride (or vice versa).

• Brussels – 2.50 hours drive or 3-hour direct train ( Belgium )
• Paris – 3.75 hours drive or 2-hour train (France)
• Strasbourg – 2.50 hours drive or 1.50-hour train ( France )
• Cologne – 2.75 hours drive or 3.50-hour train ( Germany )

Echternach Town and Echternach Lake

Located very close to the German border, Echternach Lake Town makes for an excellent day trip from Luxembourg City. It is only 30 minutes away from Luxembourg City.

Echternach Town is the OLDEST town in the entire Luxembourg country and hence has a unique cultural vibe to it. There are churches, old vintage houses, and a 7th century Benedictine Abbey. The old town is historic and very compact and can be explored on foot.

The town hall was built in the 15th century and today it attracts a lot of visitors. An artificial lake – Echternach Lake – is also a tourist magnet. It is perfect for a day out, a picnic, or just a stroll.

There are tons of museums and Roman villas located in Echternach Town. A MUST visit for history lovers. Buses are available from Luxembourg City to visit Echternach Town. Direct bus from 110 or 111 to reach Echternach.

Clervaux – Extend your one day in Luxembourg itinerary

Clervaux is a quaint little town in Luxembourg filled with castles, churches, and monasteries. Clervaux is located about an hour’s drive away from Luxembourg. You can either drive or take the bus to reach there.

Vianden – Most Popular Day trip from Luxembourg City 

Probably the most popular day trip from Luxembourg City is to the fantasy castle land of Vianden. The castle was built between the 11th and 14th centuries, on ancient Roman ruins.

Today the castle is turned into a museum, which is dedicated to Victor Hugo. He did a lot in promoting this little town.

You can reach Vianden Village via train or bus. It takes about 45 minutes one way, to arrive in the Village of Vianden from Luxembourg City.

Day trip to Metz – in the Lorrain Valley of France

Located in the Lorrain valley of France, Metz is a must-visit for its rich history of the German Kaisers, castles, and museums. The town also has the tallest cathedral in the whole of France – the Metz Cathedral.

Luxembourg City to Metz drive is about an hour. There are trains available to take you to Metz (45 minutes to an hour duration)

Trier – Day trip from Luxembourg City

Trier is located in Germany. This town has a rich history with Roman structures dating back to 180 BC. Visit this town for exploring Imperial Baths, amphitheaters, Roman bridges, the old town, and Cathedral Square. The walking tour of the old town is very popular with tourists.

You can reach Trier via car in an hour. Trains are available and it takes 1.25 hours to arrive in Trier from Luxembourg City.

Special Mention: Amneville Zoo

Zoo De’ Amneville is located in France and makes an excellent day trip if traveling with kids and family. The zoo shelters over 2000+ animals and a variety of wildlife species.

Non-exempt nationals will require to apply for a Schengen visa ahead of their arrival in Luxembourg. Citizens of the USA and Canada can travel visas free for up to 90 days in the Schengen zone . From late 2023 onward, an online travel authorization is required to be applied to (ETIAS), prior to traveling to Schengen zone countries (for US and Canada passport holders).

Luxembourg Card for 3-2- or One day in Luxembourg Itinerary

The Luxembourg Card offers great sightseeing benefits. For 1, 2, or 3 days enjoy free access to more than 60 museums and tourist attractions in Luxembourg.

The  Luxembourg Card can be used in the entire country, rather than just in Luxembourg City. You can also ride public transit for free.

So if you want to visit Luxembourg on a budget and capture most of the little country, then get the Luxembourg Card .

Best time to visit Luxembourg

We visited Luxembourg in September – the weather was amazing and we really enjoyed walking to the old town. May, June, and September months are very pleasant to visit. During the winter months from November to January, there are holidays and seasonal activities.

The city’s Winter Lights festival is on from November to January.  During the winter season, the city turns into a fairy tale. Winter months are not too extreme, the temperature hovers around 3 degrees Celcius or 37.4 F (low) to 9 degrees Celcius or 48.2 F (high).

February month is cold and wet. June is a busy month with tons of outdoor activities. Outdoor concerts such as Festival OMNI and Fête de la Musique are celebrated across the capital. Hotels are quite expensive around this time. June is also busy as people in Luxembourg are celebrating their National Day – June 23.

July and August are very hot and warm for outdoor activities. May and September are perfect for hiking and wine lovers respectively.

Road Trip Ideas to Luxembourg City

We visited Luxembourg from Brussels in Belgium by road. We were able to cover the entire one day in Luxembourg Itinerary as mentioned above. The only thing that we skipped was the National Museum of History and Art as we didn’t have enough time to explore that. You can definitely cover most of Luxembourg City in a day.

Arriving early in the city is key. When we looked at train options, we found that most trains would leave at 08:00 am or so and we wanted to maximize the time in Luxembourg so decided to hit the road instead.

Train journeys took 3 hours to arrive in Luxembourg, while a drive was 2.50 hours (and there is flexibility to start at any time you want, unlike trains)

From Brussels on your way to Luxembourg, you can visit Dinant as well. Dinant is located in Belgium. Dinant can be a day stop in your road trip proceeding to Luxembourg for a day. Both Dinant and Luxembourg are perfect day trip options from Brussels.  Here are some of the things you can do in Dinant

Other road trips from Luxembourg  include – Paris – 3.75 hours drive, Strasbourg – 2.50 hours drive, and Cologne – 2.75 hours drive.

Luxembourg also forms a part of the Benelux –  Belgium Netherlands and Luxembourg corridor. So if you have a Rail Pass for Benelux – definitely come to Luxembourg.

Is Luxembourg worth visiting?

Luxembourg is a small country with plenty of charm. With its rolling hills, quaint towns, and stunning castles it is no wonder that Luxembourg is definitely worth visiting. 

By spending one day in Luxembourg you can check off attractions like the Neumünster Abbey, Bock Casemates, and Palais Grand-Ducal and take in the views of the capital city from the panoramic elevator!

For those looking to experience a bit more of Luxembourg’s culture, there are also plenty of museums like the National Museum of History and Art or the Natural History Museum in Luxembourg City.

There are numerous medieval castles dotted around the countryside and a variety of excellent hiking trails that offer magnificent views and breathtaking landscapes. Luxembourg is perfect for nature and culture lovers alike!

If you only have 3 hours, I would recommend sticking to the Remembrance Monument area (+Place de la Constitution) and Arms Square. Near the square, you will find restaurants and shops to buy souvenirs.

Along the way, you can surely check out the Palace of Grand Dukes, with the cathedral (from outside).

Set off on a full-day trip to Luxembourg, one of the less-known cities of Europe , capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. On your way back to Brussels, you'll also stop at Les Ardennes and the charming city of Dinant.

Description

At the indicated time, we'll depart from the centre of Brussels  on a comfortable air-conditioned coach and head southeast for 200 km until we get to Luxembourg. Upon arrival, your professional guide will lead you through the upper and lower parts of the city.

First, we'll explore the historic centre in the upper part of the city and admire the Cathedral Notre-Dame and the Place d’Armes (Arms Square), the capital’s main square. Then, admire the Wenceslaus Wall , Neum ünster Abbey , and the main fortifications established near the Alzette River . Before leaving Luxembourg, you’ll have free time to have lunch, have a coffee and buy souvenirs.

Next, we'll hop back on the bus and make our way to Dinant , enjoying the views of Les Ardennes , one of the most charming areas of Belgium. Here, in between the rocky massifs is embedded in the city of Dinant, a picturesque town built on the banks of the River Meuse . The city is famous for being the birthplace of the saxophone !

In Dinant, you’ll enjoy the views of the Citadel , an imposing fortress erected on the Rocher Bayard , an impressive rock that surrounds the city. Next, you’ll visit the  Notre Dame de Dinant , a charming Romanesque church that has become a symbol of Wallonia. Then, you’ll cross the Charles De Gaulle Bridge , which is decorated with multicoloured saxophones inspired by the colours of the EU member states.

After visiting the Meuse Valley, we'll drive back to Brussels and drop you off at the Grand Place , next to the cathedral, after a total of 11.5 hours of touring.

You don't need to book tickets in advance, as it is not a high speed train line.

I have read in this forum that at the moment there are maintenance works going on, so it could be that part of the journey will happen by bus replacement.

Track works are more frequent during weekends.

"Track works are more frequent during weekends" ....... but will also be taking place every day between 27 April and May 12 (during the Belgian francophone school holidays) when buses will replace trains between Ciney and Marloie considerably extending through journey times between Bruxelles and Luxembourg and effectively making day trips unviable.

Are you looking for ideas for places to visit near Luxembourg or nice day trips from Luxembourg city ? In this selection, we feature the best excursions and day trips in Luxembourg country, but also places to visit near Luxembourg that are just over the border.

We lived in Luxembourg city for two years. And even though it’s very green and family-friendly, we often found ourselves looking for ways to escape the city and discover some fun places nearby. And because Luxembourg country is so small, many of the best places to visit nearby are actually in the neighboring countries – in France, Belgium, and in Germany.

In this article, I share some ideas for the best Luxembourg excursions and day trips that you can easily make from Luxembourg city . This list has been recently updated to include more nice places near Luxembourg. We’ve visited most of them multiple times, and I can really recommend each and every one of them!

I didn’t include the more ‘local’ places or places that require more than 2 hours to get to. So this list only contains those day trips from Luxembourg that are easily doable in a day and are worth your time the most. Many of these destinations are also perfect for weekend trips from Luxembourg.

Good to know: While you can get to most of these places by public transport, only a few of them are easy to reach without wasting too much time in the commute. The reality is that, despite the traffic jams around the city, Luxembourg and its surroundings are best explored by car. If you don’t have a car, we recommend checking the RentalCars website for the best car rental deals.

These are our favorite day trips from Luxembourg:

1. Vianden Castle, Luxembourg

The most popular place to visit near Luxembourg is Vianden town and its main attraction – Vianden Castle . Constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries and recently restored, it is one of the most beautiful romanesque-gothic castles of Europe.

The interiors are worth seeing, but the exterior and the views overlooking the village of Vianden and the area are simply spectacular. This is one place that’s considered a must-see for all tourists to Luxembourg.

Good to know: You can get to Vianden using public transport or by car, but parking can be challenging here. So try to come early in the morning. The castle is located high on the hill. You can either walk or take a chairlift to the top of the hill and walk down a bit – the castle is a bit below the upper chairlift station. We recommend taking a chairlift up and then walking down after your visit.

Practical information: Vianden Castle is open daily from 10 AM the whole year except on Christmas and on New Year’s Day. In high season (April – September), it’s open till 6 PM. For more information, please check the official website . Count about an hour for a visit to the castle itself.

The quaint picturesque  village of Vianden  is also worth a visit – count another hour or two if you also plan to have lunch here. In addition, if you like hiking, you can easily spend a weekend in Vianden and explore the area a bit more. If you decide to stay longer, this is one of the best price-quality hotels in Vianden .

2. Echternach Town & Echternach Lake, Luxembourg

Just 30 minutes ride from the city of Luxembourg, you can find the beautiful little  town of Echternach . Echternach is one of the nicest towns in Luxembourg. It has a nice medieval old-town center with narrow streets, ancient ramparts, old patrician houses, two impressive churches, and the 7th century Benedictine Abbey. Not to be missed is the Market Square and the 15th-century Town Hall.

Echternach is also known for its unique dancing procession (part of UNESCO world cultural heritage). It takes part every year on Whit Tuesday and attracts thousands of pilgrims.

Echternach is very compact and you don’t need much time to visit the town itself. However, Echternach has more to offer! The artificial  lake of Echternach, located outside the town, is a great destination for outdoor lovers and also for families with children.

You can find many leisure and sports facilities at the lake: pedal boats, fishing, miniature golf, playgrounds, also Bike Parc, Adventure Island, etc. You can make a nice walk, go biking or rollerblading around the lake. We used to visit Echternach Lake at least once a month and always enjoyed it.

TIP: While you can easily visit Echternach as a day trip from Luxembourg, you can also opt to stay in Echternach for a couple of days. It’s a good base if you decide to do some hiking on the nearby Müllerthal trail – see below. Hotel Eden au Lac has an excellent location for exploring the city, the lake, and the surroundings.

3. Müllerthal, Luxembourg

Müllerthal area also known as ‘Little Switzerland’ is the most beautiful nature destination in Luxembourg. Located just 25km/ 30min drive from the city, this is one of the best day trips for outdoor lovers. You can do some amazing hiking here, but even if you don’t hike, you can see some stunning scenery.

Müllerthal trail  is a 112 km (69 miles) walking trail in Luxembourg’s ‘Little Switzerland’. For experienced hikers, there are three loops of 37-38 km (23 miles) each, which would make a really nice multi-day hike. However, some of the nicest parts of the trail are very easily accessible by car, so  you can simply make shorter walks on the nicest parts of the trail .

The best places to see in Mullerthal are: the little  Schiessentümpel waterfall ,  Wolfsschlucht  (the wolves’ canyon),  Siweschlëff  (the labyrinth), the  Hohllay Caves  (the hollow rocks), the  Breechkaul  (amphitheater), and  Perekop  – the tall rocks that can be climbed using a narrow staircase perched between the rocks.

You can spend a couple of hours, a day, or even a week in the Mullerthal area. We used to go here quite often when we lived in Luxembourg city, even though our kids were very young and couldn’t really hike much at that time. This is my personal favorite place in the whole of Luxembourg.

TIP: Combine a visit here to that of Echternach (see above).

4. Trier, Germany

Trier is a beautiful town in Germany, less than 1-hour drive from Luxembourg city. It’s a perfect day trip from Luxembourg – whether you are looking to visit some cultural sights or simply go shopping. We used to go to Trier all the time when we lived in Luxembourg.

Trier is known for the Roman structures, dating to about 180 B.C. The most famous is the Porta Nigra, which is also the best place to begin your sightseeing tour of Trier. The other UNESCO sites in Trier include the Cathedral, Amphitheater, Imperial Baths, and Roman Bridge.

Often, it’s nice to simply walk around the old town center . Don’t miss the Main Market Square (Hauptmarkt), Cathedral Square and the Cathedral itself, the Electoral Palace, and the Basilika. In summer, you can also take one of the family-friendly  Mosel River boat trips .

Good to know: Trier is a big town with lots of history, so count the whole day to explore some of its famous sights. If you are not interested in historic sites, you can easily spend a day shopping and dining. Or you can combine the two and make it a fun day out or even a weekend getaway from Luxembourg. If you have even more time and are visiting in summer, there are nice boat tours from Trier to explore the beautiful valleys or the Moselle River (more about it below).

TIP: If you do stay in Trier, we recommend Hotel Porta Nigra or Mercure Hotel Trier Porta Nigra – they have the best location in town.

5. The Moselle, Luxembourg or Germany

Moselle Valley is the most beautiful river valley in Luxembourg, and also one of the nicest ones in Germany. It is best known for hilly landscapes dotted with vineyards, wineries, charming villages, medieval towns, and hiking routes.

The best towns to visit in the Moselle region in Luxembourg are Remich, Ahn, Grevenmarcher, Manternach, Remerchen, Mondorf-les-Bains, and the world-famous Schengen (where the Schengen treaty was signed in 1985). You could drive to each village and explore them, and you can also take one of the many hiking or biking routes in the area.

However, the very best way to explore the Moselle Valley as a day trip from Luxembourg is by going on a boat tour on the Moselle River . Boats usually run between March and September-October, from Remich or from Grevenmacher.

TIP: As already mentioned above, in high season, you can also take boat trips along the (different parts of) the Moselle River from Trier in Germany. There, you have a better chance to be able to get on the boat without booking it in advance. Alternatively, another really nice area to explore the Moselle Valley is in Ellenz-Poltersdorf in Germany. It’s about 1h40 drive from Luxembourg or 1h15 from Trier. There, you can book a really nice vineyard tour with wine tasting .

6. Bourscheid Castle, Luxembourg

Bourscheid Castle is the biggest castle in the region, but it’s not as well known as the Vianden Castle that everyone flocks to. It’s a really nice medieval castle to visit if you find yourself in Luxembourg.

Bourscheid is located in northern Luxembourg, about 50km, 45 minutes drive from the city. The drive itself is really beautiful and the area is worth a visit even if just for the scenery. Unless you are prepared to take three buses, you will need a car to get here.

The castle has been recently restored and it’s really well done. Make sure to take an audio guide (also available in English) – it brings the place to life! The views from the castle and also from the road driving uphill towards the castle are amazing!

Practical information: The castle is open daily, year-round. Count about 1-2 hours for a visit. More information on their website .

TIP: If you are looking for a nice getaway from the city, stay at the nearby Sporthotel Leweck for a night. It’s one of the nicest hotels in the region and our personal favorite in Luxembourg. You can see the castle in the distance from there too.

7. Bastogne, Belgium

Bastogne town in Belgium, about 1 hour drive from Luxembourg city, is another great day trip to take in this region. Bastogne is best known for its WWII history and the famous battles that changed the course of the Second World War.

The town itself is really nice, and there are lots of interesting war sites and museums. In addition, you’ll also find charming cafés and food stores where you can try all kinds of typical local specialties of the Belgian Ardennes region. There is plenty to see in Bastogne to fill the entire day!

However, the main landmarks are the Bastogne War Museum and the Mardasson Memorial . So don’t miss that! This is one of the best war sites to visit in Belgium and is definitely worth a trip.

Good to know: If you plan well, you can visit the town of Bastogne and at least one or maybe even two museums in a day. The best way to get to Bastogne from Luxembourg is by car.

8. Metz, France

If you are looking for a bigger city to visit near Luxembourg, then Metz in France is a very good choice. It’s about 1h drive by car, but there is also a direct train that also takes one hour. So this is one of the few Luxembourg excursions that you can easily do even if you don’t have a car.

Metz is a 3000-year-old city, with lots of history. But it’s also a very green and a very modern city that’s one of the UNESCO Creative Cities of Music, Art & Tech.

Don’t miss the 13th-century Saint-Etienne Cathedral , a contemporary art museum Centre Pompidou-Metz , and the Golden Court Museum . Also the medieval Porte des Allemands (German’s Gate) is very impressive.

On the first visit to Metz, you can also take a mini tourist train that will bring you past the most important landmarks in the city center.

If you have more time, here you can also take a boat trip on (yet another part of) the Moselle River. Here you can find more information on things to see and do in Metz .

TIP: If you decide to make a weekend trip to Metz, check out the 3* Hôtel de la Cathédrale or the 4* Hotel La Citadelle Metz MGallery . These are both excellent choices in the city center.

9. Dinant, Belgium

Dinant town in Belgium is another popular day trip from Luxembourg. Located half-way between Brussels and Luxembourg (about 1,5 hours drive from Luxembourg and a bit less from Brussels), it’s sometimes even included in one-day tours from Brussels to Luxembourg.

The main highlight of Dinant is its impressive Citadel . This 19th-century fortress is now a museum. Another important landmark to see is the house of Adolphe Sax , the inventor of the saxophone.

If you have an hour to spare, I also highly recommend taking a 45-minute river cruise on the Meuse River . Normally, you don’t have to book in advance and can just hop on one of the boats that – in high season – usually run on the hour every hour in the afternoon.

Good to know: You could get to Dinant from Luxembourg by train and bus, but it would take at least 3 hours one way, so it’s best to come here by car.

10. Amneville Zoo, France

Probably the best day trip from Luxembourg for families is Zoo d’Amnéville , about 45-50 minutes drive from the city center.

We have visited a lot of zoos all over the world, but the Amneville zoo in France remains my absolute favorite. It’s a beautiful big zoo with lots of space for its 2,000 animals. There are 360 different species from 5 continents and it’s a really nice park that the whole family will enjoy.

You can attend the animal feedings or see one of the many shows during the day. Most shows run daily from February to November.

TIP: Go early in the morning as you will need the whole day to visit the zoo (and still not see it all). If you want to see the shows as well, you may easily spend 2 days there. Hotel Golden Tulip Amneville is the nicest one in the area. This is a perfect place to spend a weekend for family travelers from Luxembourg.

11. Bouillon Castle, Belgium

Bouillon town and more particularly Bouillon Castle in Belgium is another really nice place that you can easily visit from Luxembourg in a day. It’s about 100 km, 1h15 drive from Luxembourg and can best be visited by car.

Bouillon Castle is one of the most impressive medieval castles of Belgium. Its origins date back to the 8th century, but its name and fame are related to the 1st crusade, led by Godfrey of Bouillon in the 11th century.

The castle visit is just as you’d expect from a medieval fortress: with drawbridges, a torture chamber, dungeons, treasure hunts, and even torch tours at night. From the top of the main tower, you also have great views of the town and the Semois River below.

The castle visit includes a falconry show and several permanent exhibitions, one of them dedicated to the history of writing from the Middle Ages until modern times. In summer, there are often various events, with actors dressed up in medieval costumes, etc.

Practical information: Bouillon Castle is open the whole year round; daily from February to November, with varying opening hours per season. You can find more information on their website .

Good to know: In addition to the castle, there are other things to do in Bouillon town. If you have some time, ask the tourism office for a map of the 3-km walk that passes 20 interesting buildings of Bouillon. If visiting with kids, you may want to check out the Bouillon Animal Park as well.

In summer, kayaking and water biking are possible, as well as many other activities nearby. You could easily spend a weekend in Bouillon. Here you can find hotels and accommodations in the region .

12. Eltz Castle, Germany

One of the most ‘Instagrammable’ castles in the world, Eltz Castle in Germany can also be visited on a day trip from Luxembourg. It’s 150km, almost 2 hours drive, but if you love fairytale-like castles, it might be worth it even if you only have a day. Just prepare for the crowds, especially if you are visiting on a weekend or in the high season.

Eltz Castle is a privately owned medieval castle a bit in the middle of nowhere between Koblenz and Trier. It dates from the 12th century and has been in the same family for over 30 generations. You can visit inside, but the most impressive is its exterior as seen from the bridge at the entrance to the castle. That’s also where all the Instagram pictures are taken from.

However, for a chance to take a picture like that, you’ll need to arrive very early in the morning, or in the offseason. We didn’t go there for the pictures and we enjoyed the short visit, but we were there in July and it was a bit too busy for our liking.

Practical information: The castle is located a 20-minute walk from the car parking. In the high season, you can also take a shuttle if you don’t want to walk. It’s usually open daily, from the end of March until the end of October. More info on their website . However, if you don’t care about going inside, you can visit in any season.

TIP: If you have the time, check out the nearby towns in the Moselle Valley. There are more castles in this area and some stunning viewpoints of the river, the vineyards, and the picturesque villages. Boat tours are also available here.

Here are just a few names of the villages that we passed and that looked very nice: Löf, Alken, Hatzenport, Treis-Karden, Heideküppchen, Moselkern, and many more. There are also lots of hiking trails in the area.

If you visit in the summer, I recommend staying in the area for at least one night. One of the most popular hotels in the area is Moselstern Parkhotel Krähennest , but there are also many others.

13. Beaufort Castles, Luxembourg

Beaufort is yet another place that’s popular to visit in Luxembourg. There is not one, but two Beaufort Castles . One is a medieval castle that dates from the 11th-17th centuries and is more of a castle ruin. Whereas the other one is a renaissance castle built in the 17th century, well preserved, with nice gardens, and virtually unchanged over the last 360 years.

The Renaissance Castle is open for visits year-round. Whereas the Medieval Castle is only open from the end of March until mid-November. They both offer tours in various languages, including English. For more information, please check their website .

And while the castles are not as impressive as the others on this list, Beaufort is only about 35-40 minutes drive from the city, which makes it easy to visit from Luxembourg even if you only have a few hours. Furthermore, it’s close to Echternach and Müllerthal (both mentioned above), and so you can combine several destinations in one trip.

Additional suggestions for places to visit near Luxembourg

In addition to the Luxembourg day trips mentioned above, here are a few extra suggestions for expats who live in Luxembourg and are looking for even more ideas for places to visit nearby:

• Parc Merveilleux, Luxembourg. This is a small theme park for families with young children. There are some playgrounds and some animals, but don’t expect anything big. It’s a very popular place to visit in Luxembourg with kids. We spent many weekends there. More info on their website (in French or German only).
• Durbuy, Belgium. This so-called ‘smallest city in the world’ is a favorite among the Belgians and the Dutch. Wander the narrow streets, have lunch at one of the really good restaurants, do some shopping, or spend a summer weekend kayaking and climbing at the adventure park.
• La Roche, Belgium. A small picturesque town with a medieval castle ruin that you can visit. Some nice shops and lots of restaurants, and also outdoor activities (kayaking, hiking, etc.).
• Spa, Belgium. The resort that gave name to all the spas in the world. You can visit Thermes de Spa , go hiking, dining, etc.
• Monschau, Germany. A very picturesque little town, especially great in winter. Monschau holds one of the most beautiful Christmas Markets in Europe , a hidden gem!
• Verdun, France. A small historic town with WWI sites, an underground citadel, and a beautiful cathedral.
• Schengen, Luxembourg. Located along the earlier-mentioned Moselle River, Schengen town might be worth a visit for its historic and symbolic significance. Or to simply take a picture with the town name, Schengen.
• Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. The second-largest ‘city’ of Luxembourg, it’s a nice town to visit for a couple of hours, but don’t expect much.
• Arlon, Belgium. Arlon is the closest Belgian town just over the border from Luxembourg. The main highlight here is the St. Donatus Church and there are also a few minor museums. Not the most exciting place to see near Luxembourg, but if you live nearby, you may want to check it out. Just to say ‘been there done that’.

This list of Luxembourg day trips could be much longer. Furthermore, If you are prepared to drive more than 2 hours, you have countless choices of places to visit from Luxembourg. Here are some popular options: Brussels or Waterloo in Belgium, Cologne in Germany, Strasbourg and the beautiful towns of the Alsace Wine Route in France , and many, many more.

People living in Luxembourg often joke that the best thing about Luxembourg is its central location making it easy to get away from the city and visit many amazing places in the neighboring countries. If you drive just 3-4 hours in any direction, you can visit a different place every weekend for a few years and you’ll never get bored.

Hi Fiona, even if you find a taxi to bring you such a big distance, you should know that taxis are VERY expensive in this part of the world. Plus, it's one thing to get a taxi out of the city and quite another to come back. I just tried checking the Uber app for a trip like that and it says no trips available either. So if you don't want to rent a car, it's best to use public transport.

Hi David, unless there is some kind of a special Sunday opening for the shops (which you can probably research on Google), all these towns will be rather quiet on a Sunday. That being said, Metz has quite a few attractions that are open on Sundays, so out of these three, I'd probably go to Metz. Just do some research in advance what you can see/do.

Some other suggestions to add: Rodemack, potentially Montmedy (neat citadel, lots of history, crazy that you can drive ALL the way in, but could be in better repair), Orval, and the Maginot Line spots, especially Hackenberg. All less than an hour drive.

1. echternach.

Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg and one of my favorite day trips to Luxembourg (ok, I am biased, as Echternach is my hometown).

But there are a lot of amazing things to do in Echternach , you will definitely fall in love with this beautiful place.

The medieval town itself has one of the prettiest city centers that you can find in the Grand Duchy and the entire town is surrounded by lush nature.

Echternach is famous for its impressive abbey and its narrow, cobbled streets. It was founded in the Middle Ages by Saint Willibrord, the only Saint buried on Luxembourgish ground.

The pastel-colored house fronts give the town a very dreamy atmosphere.

The best way to explore Echternach is by wandering through its narrow streets and enjoying a coffee on its medieval market square, right next to the former Justice Palace Denzel.

Besides the Abbey Museum, the impressive basilica, the Roman Villa, and the quaint town walls, Echternach is a paradise for active travelers and outdoor lovers.

The town is surrounded by the region called “Little Switzerland – Mullerthal” which is famous for its intriguing rock formations and extensive hiking trail network.

There are countless amazing things to do in Mullerthal that make it one of the best Luxembourg trips.

When visiting Echternach, you can’t miss the lake which is a playground for young and old.

It boasts beach volleyball courts, a youth hostel, several regional eateries, playgrounds for the kids, and the Roman Villa Museum.

There’s nothing more fun than renting a pedalo or a SUP board and enjoying the tranquility of this oasis of peace on one of the best beaches near Luxembourg City.

Although it’s possibly the nearest beach to Luxembourg, unfortunately, you can’t swim in the lake (yet!!).

And a brand new food and leisure pavilion just opened, so you should definitely keep an eye on Echternach’s lake!

As you can see Echternach is one of the cities near Luxembourg to visit.

How to get there:  bus 210 and 211 connect Echternach to the capital. The ride takes about 1 h and buses depart every 20-30 min. during the week (every hour on Sundays). –  Check schedules here

Book the best tours in Luxembourg

Vianden is probably the most popular Luxembourg day trip. Its picturesque location along the Our River and the emblematic castle towering on top of the village, make Vianden a postcard-perfect village.

Besides the impressive castle, Vianden is famous for its Victor Hugo Museum located in the house in which the famous French writer stayed in 1871.

Besides enjoying Vianden’s quaint vibe on its numerous terraces (perfect to enjoy the local gastronomy), fun activities to do in Vianden include a ride with the chair lift to the mountain hut.

From there you can enjoy the best views of Vianden, as well as the Adventure Park which guarantees fun for young and old.

During the summer months, I highly recommend visiting Vianden’s swimming pool with beautiful views of the castle.

How to get there:  By train to Ettelbruck and by bus line 570 to Vianden. 

I recommend  renting a car  to visit the north of Luxembourg as public transport is not very frequent.

3. Clervaux

Clervaux is yet another great option for day trips from Luxembourg.

It is a picturesque town in the north of Luxembourg, but it differs from the other towns mentioned so far.

If you have a car , a day trip to Clervaux can easily be combined with a visit to Vianden, which is nearby. Both are great places to visit in Luxembourg in one day.

The imposing church of Clervaux dominates the cityscape. With its grey and white outside decor, it definitely is a very eye-catching attraction.

When visiting Clervaux, you can’t miss visiting the castle which has been turned into a museum and hosts now one of the most important exhibitions in Luxembourg.

It’s also known as the biggest photographic exhibition in the world, “Family of Man” created by Edward Steichen, an American photographer with Luxembourgish origins.

How to get there:  By train from Luxembourg City. The ride takes 1h.

4. Ansembourg and Hollenfels Castle

The castles of  Ansembourg and Hollenfels  are real gems for day trips from Luxembourg City.

Indeed, it’s here where the fairytale atmosphere of Luxembourg is the most palpable.

Both castles are connected by an extensive hiking trail network, thus you can combine hiking with a visit of the castles. It’s one of the most popular hiking trails in Luxembourg.

Hollenfels castle goes back to the 11th century and it lures you with its massive walls and towers.

Nowadays the castle hosts a Youth hostel and allows young people to learn more about nature and history.

The castle of Ansembourg is the exact opposite. It’s much more elegant and filigree and it reminds you of French castles like Versailles.

The castle is private property, however, the gardens can be visited.

They were laid out in 1750 and adorned with numerous statues and decorative fountains. It’s a place to unwind and feel like a prince/princess.

If you plan on walking between the two castles, don’t forget to bring along one of the best water bottles for hiking .

5. Moselle River

A day trip to the Moselle River is always a good idea. The region is famous for its beautiful vineyards and of course for its excellent wines.

On top, it’s a paradise for foodies, as some of the finest restaurants in Luxembourg can be found along the Moselle River.

Grevenmacher, Remich, and Mondorf are the main hubs where you can enjoy the laid-back atmosphere with its particular micro-climate.

Even the Romans already appreciated the region and started the Luxembourgish wine culture.

Many visitors just drive from cellar to cellar and taste the newest wines.

The vineyards are also perfect for hiking and I recommend visiting the Moselle region particularly in September when the annual wine festivals are held in each village.

Another fun activity to do is renting a bike near Remich and cycle the 3-countries path going through parts of Germany, France, and Luxembourg.

6. Beaufort Castle

The small village of Beaufort is located in the heart of the Müllerthal region. It’s famous for having one of the most beautiful castles in Luxembourg.

Built in the 11th century as a small fortress on a rock, Beaufort Castle had the requisite moat and stone walls of Medieval European castles.

Nowadays it is a coveted destination for day-trippers from Luxembourg since you can visit the castle and enjoy some of the home-made liquor made in the castle.

Don’t forget to have a look at the scenic lakes with the swans next to the castle.

7. Bourscheid Castle

When taking day trips from Luxembourg, you must visit Luxembourg’s most giant castle.

Bourscheid Castle sits on top of a small hill in the Bourscheid Valley, less than an hour’s drive to the north of Luxembourg City.

This restored open-air ruin has stood in this place for a thousand years.

With its eight-pointed towers, Bourscheid Castle looks like it belongs in a fairytale, and belongs on any itinerary for a Luxembourg one-day trip.

When not looking at the castle itself, take the time to enjoy the expansive views afforded by the castle’s position. From its walls, you can see almost the whole of the valley surrounding the castle.

How to get there : Public buses can take you to either Michelau or Bourscheid, Bei der Kiirch which are both nearby, but then you will have to walk to the castle.

8. brussels.

Brussels is the classical weekend or day trip from Luxembourg. The Belgian capital has so many options when it comes to culture, food, leisure, or shopping.

And luckily there are lots of options for tours from Luxembourg to Brussels.

Somehow the administrative capital of the EU manages the gap between being hip, somehow bizarre, unshowy but proud, and extremely multicultural at the same time.

You can find comic art painted on house fronts and organic art nouveau facades right next to concrete buildings from the 60s and 70s.

The old city center of Brussels, dating from medieval times and the main  Grand Place  is probably one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.

Liege is a real hidden gem when it comes to deciding where to go from Luxembourg for a day trip.

Even though Liege seems to have a bit of a downbeat feel at first glance, you’ll very likely end up loving Liege.

It’s also ideal when looking for a one-day trip from Luxembourg.

It all starts when you arrive by train ( from Luxembourg ) to the impressive train station designed by star architect S antiago Calatrava .

The town itself is full of history and holds several hidden gems such as the town hall and the legendary staircase.

The best part is probably the  Citadelle of Liege  from which you’ll enjoy panoramic views all over the city.

You might also like to take a cruise on the Meuse River.

You can’t leave Liege without tasting one of its famous Liege waffles and tasting some  Peket , Belgian gin.

Often considered as one of the  most beautiful cities in Belgium , Bruges is one of my favorite getaways from Luxembourg, especially during the winter and spring months.

Even though Bruges is also well worth a visit during summer, it might be very (even too!) crowded from May till September.

It’s one also of the most romantic places near Luxembourg to visit.

I strongly recommend to stay longer in Bruges than only one day, as the town has a very romantic, mysterious atmosphere at nightfall.

11. Bouillon in the Ardennes

Bouillon is another one of the perfect places to visit near Luxembourg, whether you want to do a day trip only or stay overnight.

The town is dominated by its impressive medieval fortress from which you’ll enjoy panorama views all over Bouillon and the surrounding forests.

Visiting the castle is a must and they even hold a falcon and owl shows, which might be a lovely leisure option for the kids.

Besides visiting Bouillon Castle, I recommend enjoying some Belgian beer and French fries on one of the numerous terraces along the Semois River.

However, if you want a real foodie experience, I highly recommend tapas and seasonal cocktails at  BOM Food and Drinks . They focus on sustainability, the staff is lovely and the food is to die for!

12. Torgny, Belgium

Torgny is another one of the lovely places to visit around Luxembourg and one of the best places for a weekend break in the Ardennes region of Southern Belgium.

It is found in the Southern Belgium region  La Gaume  and close to the French border, is known to be the southernmost village in Belgium, and for being one of the prettiest.

Indeed, the hand-hewn stones and colorful flowers growing along the ochre-colored house fronts with their red curved tiles, remind me more of Southern France than Wallonia,  Belgium .

But Torgny is not only reminiscent of the Mediterranean from the outside. It also boasts a very particular micro-climate that allows the cultivation of wines.

Torgny is definitely a day trip for those who are seeking to unwind and disconnect from the stress.

13. Orval, Belgium

The abbey of Orval is one of the classical Luxembourg day trips.

It’s not only the perfect destination for those who are culturally or spiritually interested but also for foodies.

The roots of Orval Abbey go back to 1070 when it was founded by Benedictine monks.

Later on, in 1132, the abbey was incorporated into the Cistercian Order.

I particularly liked the contrast of the old, medieval ruins with the modern, imposing abbey which boasts gorgeous  Art Deco  details.

Nowadays, you can book your stay at the Orval Abbey for spiritual or meditative retreats.

Supporting the Cistercian regulations, the monastery boasts a cheese factory, bakery, and confectionery.

All of their products can be found in restaurants or grocery shops in the Ardennes region.

Do you want to visit the smallest town in the world? Well, you have it at a stone’s throw from Luxembourg!

During medieval times, Durbuy would ore accurately be considered a town, but today, the historic center only has 50 inhabitants.

If you include the inhabitants living outside the old town, Durbuy reaches 350 inhabitants. In 1977, Durbuy amalgamated with 40 surrounding villages.

For me personally, a lot of Durbuy’s attractiveness comes with its remoteness.

And despite its size, there are a lot of amazing things to do in Durbuy, and it’s one of the best winter destinations.

You need to drive along winding roads and through mesmerizing woods in Wallonia’s Luxembourg Province until you can finally spot the first medieval houses.

When you first spot the impressive castle suddenly, you feel like you have traveled in time to reach fairy tale Durbuy.

The best way to discover Durbuy is by strolling through its narrow streets paved with cobblestones.

15. Knokke-Heist, Belgian Coast

A trip to the seaside is always a good idea, and if you are looking for the closest beach to Luxembourg, Knokke-Heist Beach is a great option!

The Belgian coast is not too far and is one of the best places to visit near Luxembourg.

There are plenty of beach resorts on the Belgian seaside to choose from for weekend getaways from Luxembourg if you want to stay longer.

While Blankenberge is very popular for families, Nieuwpoort is a fabulous option for nature lovers.

If you want a bit more luxury and love fancy boutiques, you shouldn’t skip Knokke-Heist.

Located close to the Dutch border, Knokke-Heist (and mostly its neighborhood “ the Zoute “) is known as the beach resort for those who want to see and to be seen.

Luckily, Knokke is much more than this, and there are a lot of fun things to do on Knokke Beach .

On top, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to international concept stores and small designer shops.

Bastogne is one of the best cities near Luxembourg to visit.

With its period architecture, local pubs and eateries, and its rich and exciting history, this city would make for an excellent stop on many weekend getaways from Luxembourg.

As you wander the streets, take the time to explore the critical role Bastogne played in World War II at the Mardasson Memorial, which honors the fallen American soldiers during the Battle of the Bulge.

There is also the nearby Bastogne War Museum, the Bastogne Barracks, and the 101st Airborne Museum (also known as The Mess).

One of the city’s greatest attractions is Eglise Saint-Pierre (St. Peter’s Church).

Just a 1-day trip from Luxembourg to Namur will have you falling in love with this beautiful city.

Sitting on the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers, Namur has a bustling, picturesque character, with its many ornate Belgian townhouses and rolling hills.

At just a 2-and-a-half-hour train ride away, Namur makes for one of the best day tours from Luxembourg City.

Your first stop should be to take a tour of the magnificent Citadel of Namur, either with a guide or with an audio tour.

You’ll be given a deep dive into the city’s history – Namur has had plenty of different rulers and occupiers over the centuries, and each has left their mark.

18. mettlach.

If you want to take a day trip to Germany from Luxembourg city, you can’t go wrong with Mettlach.

Mettlach is a quaint little village next to the river Saar.

Even if at first glimpse, Mettlach seems to be sleeping beauty, there are several leisure activities that make Mettlach yet another perfect day trip from Luxembourg.

The most eye-catching sight is one of the most picturesque museums I visited in a long time:  The Villeroy & Boch Discovery Centre  owned by the prestigious family empire.

The baroque building is absolutely stunning, huge in its dimensions, and gives an appropriate impression of the social and cultural importance of the Boch family.

Just opposite the baroque building, you’ll see a real fairy tale castle:  Schloss Saareck .

Castle Saareck was commissioned by the esteemed Boch family in 1903 and has an eventful history.

It functioned as a military hospital during WWII and it became a shelter to many refugees related to the Boch family and Villeroy & Boch employees after the war.

19. Mosel River Valley

The German Mosel River Valley is perfect if you want a day trip to Germany.

The Mosel river valley will lure you with its lush green terraced vineyards, world-famous white wines, quaint wine villages, and fairytale castles.

21. Koblenz

Are you looking for a city trip to a destination that is a bit off the beaten path?

I am convinced that Koblenz will be the perfect choice for you! It is one of the most wonderful European cities near Luxembourg to visit!

Koblenz is located where the Rhine and Mosel rivers meet, and it offers plenty of leisure options to surprise visitors throughout the year.

Obviously there is its imposing Ehrenbreitstein fortress towering above the town.

And the cable car across the Rhine river to the fortress is one of the most popular attractions in Koblenz.

During summer, the city center lives up and you’ll have a hard time finding a free seat on a terrace.

24. strasbourg.

Strasbourg is one of my favorite cities near Luxembourg. It is a coveted destination for a 1-2 night weekend trip from Luxembourg.

The capital of Alsace unites the quintessence of the French Alsace region: half-timbered houses, bright-colored house fronts, delicious but hearty food, excellent wines, and narrow, cobbled streets.

Strasbourg is the perfect blend between a medieval past and a modern city as it hosts several key institutions of the EU.

The most obvious attraction of Strasbourg is the Gothic  Cathédrale Notre Dame  which can be spotted from miles before you reach Strasbourg.

Place de la Republique  and  Petite France , the most picturesque area of Strasbourg are yet another site that can’t be missed while visiting Strasbourg.

The city of Metz, in the Lorraine department, is a popular day trip from Luxembourg City.

Many people just go for the large shopping possibilities. However, the city of Metz holds much more.

Indeed, the city of Metz, with its spectacular Gothic cathedral, gathers historical elements of several periods including Roman vestiges, medieval old town, 18th-century buildings, and a German-style neighborhood.

I particularly like Metz for breathing some “ French air ”.

The terraces of the main square, people’s way to dress, everything has that little French touch that makes the city a welcome break from Luxembourg.

You can’t leave Metz without visiting the spectacular  Centre Pompidou Museum .

During late November until Christmas, Metz also holds one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the region.

26. Amneville

Amnéville is a great getaway, especially for families. Not only is the town famous for its spa-tourism with a long tradition, but it also hosts one of the biggest zoos in Europe: the Amnéville Zoo.

Another attraction is Amnéville’s Aquarium with over 350 species of invertebrates and fishes, an 18-hole golf course, and one of France’s biggest forest adventure parks: France Aventure.

But there are even more leisure options near the small town of Amnéville. The Seven Casino and the Snowhall with its indoor ski slope which can be used all year round.

The most important spa center in Amnéville includes water rich in iron and minerals, with sedative, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-infectious, and anti-spasmodic properties.

Anyone fascinated by the rich history of Europe should take at least one day trips from Luxembourg to visit Verdun.

It was here, in the hills to the north of the city, that the Battle of Verdun – the longest battle of the First World War – was held, from February to December in 1916.

As such, one of the most poignant and impressive monuments to those who gave their lives in that battle is the French National Cemetery and Douaumont Ossuary.

Here you can find over 13,000 crosses representing the fallen, an iconic symbol that marks the breathtaking scale of the conflict.

Verdun itself is no less historic. Walk through the Porte Châtel into La Roche Square and pass through what was once the city’s medieval wall.

The curved walls of the Episcopal Palace are captivating, and the two rectangular towers of Verdun Cathedral are not unlike those at Notre Dame in Paris.

Of the many beautiful places near Luxembourg, France is obviously regarded as one of the best, and the city of Lille has plenty of delightful attractions for all ages.

31. the hague.

One of my favorite weekend trips from Luxembourg is definitely  The Hague .

Although the city is located almost 4 hours drive from Luxembourg, it is so much worth the visit as there are lots of great things to do in The Hague .

Besides the fact of being the most important European diplomatic town, The Hague boasts several  internationally renowned museums .

The most popular museum is probably the  Mauritshuis , where you can see the “Girl with the Pearl Earring”. –  Book tickets here in advance

The Hague is also home to such innovative concepts as “Urban Farmers”.

Located on the rooftop of a former industrial fabric, Europe’s largest rooftop farm is all about growing fresh vegetables and fish farming on the rooftops of urban buildings in a closed-loop system.

Yes, you read right: vegetables and fish growing under the same roof on a city high-rise building!

All this with almost zero waste, no antibiotics, and locally grown fresh vegetables and fishes!

But my favorite part of The Hague is the fact that the beach is never far, and you’ll find some of the best beaches near Luxembourg here.

It might not be the closest beach from Luxembourg, but you’ll have a blast at the Pier of Scheveningen where you can  enjoy a ride in a luxury Ferris wheel .

If you want to experience a dreamy atmosphere, Echternach is the best place to go, this is one of the prettiest city centers that you can find in the Grand-Duchy and the entire town is surrounded by lush nature.

If you visit Luxembourg during summer season, I highly recommend visiting Vianden, it has very impressive castles, famous Victor Hugo Museum, numerous terraces (perfect to enjoy the local gastronomy), and Vianden’s swimming pool with beautiful views of the castle.
