Complete Guide to Animal Kingdom Lodge (w/ review)

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of many deluxe hotels at Walt Disney World. It’s located near, you guessed it, Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

You can also find Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Jambo House on the same property.

This is 1 of 8 Deluxe Resort hotels (not including Deluxe Villas) on Disney World property. What makes this resort special is that it’s kind of like being at Animal Kingdom.

That’s right, you can see wild African animals roaming the grounds, including, but not limited to giraffes and zebras. This is definitely an amazing resort.

Here’s everything you need to know about Animal Kingdom Lodge.

In this article

Animal Kingdom Lodge is located in the Animal Kingdom theme park area. It’s probably one of the most unique hotels at Disney World.

disney's animal kingdom lodge sign

The resort is inspired by the traditional “kraal,” which is a horseshoe-curved design that offers views of four savannas where over 200 animals and birds can be seen. There’s also African-themed dining, fun pool areas, a range of room selections that are also accessible, and so much more.

There are also two Disney Vacation Club resorts on property: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Jambo House.

Animal Kingdom Lodge offers regular guest rooms, whereas the “Villas” refer to DVC accommodations available at both Jambo House and Kidani Village. All of the resorts also share the same dining locations.

Because Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jambo House, and Kidani Village are so close to each other, Disney provides an internal shuttle to transport guests between the resorts.

Where The Magic Never Ends

Disney’s animal kingdom lodge 1 bedroom villa room tour, jen brennan.

AKL-Bedroom-scaled

On our last trip to Walt Disney World we were lucky enough to stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. This deluxe resort is adjacent to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park and provides amazing views of wildlife right out of your window. It truly feels like you are in the middle of an African Savanna.

AKL-Bedroom-scaled

Our family stayed in a one bedroom villa located in Kidani Village with a Savanna view room. When we entered the main living space, we were astonished by not only the beautiful detail in design but also the spaciousness of the rooms.

AKL-Kitchen-scaled

The full kitchen provided everything that we needed like a microwave, refrigerator, oven, sink, dishwasher, coffee machine, toaster, cooking utensils and dishes. Although we prefer to take advantage of the amazing dining options at Animal Kingdom Lodge, we could certainly prepare a full meal in this kitchen.

AKL-Living-Room-scaled

The living room had a large pull-out couch as well as an oversized chair that pulled out to a bed. There was plenty of seating space including a table and chairs to enjoy your meals, and an island with bar stools.

Also in the main living space, you can find a washer and dryer which was very helpful. They even provide you with laundry detergent to get you started. There is an ironing board and iron as well.

AKL-Vanity-scaled

Full baths are located not only in the main living area but also attached to the master bedroom. Everyone had plenty of space for the morning rush to get out to the Disney Parks.

AKL-Savanna-View-scaled

I certainly enjoy a room with a view, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge did not disappoint! From both the living room and the master bedroom, I could see animals grazing and wandering through the Savanna. (The resort can provide you with a wildlife field guide so that you can take note of which animals you have seen throughout your stay).

The large master bedroom included a king size bed, a desk, a dresser that provided plenty of storage, a big screen TV, and an amazingly large master bath.

AKL-Jacuzzi-Tub-scaled

Let’s take a moment to talk about the master bath. Wow! After a long day in the parks, relaxing in the jacuzzi tub was amazing. The oversized shower had complimentary toiletries, a bench and a rain shower head. Our vanity was large enough for multiple family members to use at once. The toilet was in a separate room allowing even more privacy.

We have stayed in most of the Disney resorts, and I have to say this is definitely on the top of the list! If your family loves wildlife, the comforts of home, and the ability to be super close to the Animal Kingdom theme park, I highly recommend Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort Review and Room Tour

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort Review and Room Tour

On our January 2022 trip, we were incredibly lucky to stay four nights at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. My brother-in-law is a DVC member, and he used his DVC points to book this room and invited us to stay with them!

First of all, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is absolutely stunning. Just walking into the lobby will take your breath away! This resort has two sections—Jambo House and Kidani Village. When booking you can choose from savanna view, pool view, and standard view rooms. (Standard rooms and suites—meaning non-DVC villas—are all in Jambo House.) We stayed in a savanna-view two-bedroom DVC villa on the Kidani Village side.

Each side has its own lobby, gift shop, arcade, pool, and bus stop (though they share busses). Kidani Village definitely feels quieter and cozier, while Jambo House is livlier and full of fun energy. The main thing that Kidani Village lacks is a quick-service restaurant. You can still get drink refills in refillable resort mugs at Kidani Village—there’s a soda fountain and coffee/tea station in the back of the gift shop in the lobby.

I would call this resort medium-sized. Once you’ve stayed at Pop Century or walked around Caribbean Beach, Animal Kingdom Lodge practically feels cozy.

crystal clear blue pool with lounge chairs in the foreground and water slide off to the right at Jambo House at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

During our stay, the pool on the Kidani Village side was closed for refurbishment, so we walked over to the Jambo House side multiple times to eat at The Mara and go swimming. There is a shuttle you can take between Kidani Village and Jambo House, but it’s probably only about a 7-10 minute walk.

The pool at Jambo House (pictured above) is gorgeous, and our kids had a blast swimming and going down the waterslide multiple times. There’s also a pool bar that serves drinks and snacks, but we didn’t try anything from there. We had no problem finding available chairs in the middle of the day, and it proved to be a really nice break from the parks!

the Indian-style bread service at Sanaa restaurant at animal kingdom lodge featuring a plate of naan bread above a board of nine different dips with a spoon in each

The Mara is the only quick-service restaurant at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. It’s located on the Jambo House side, and it can be kind of hard to find if it’s your first time staying there! You have to go in the front of the Jambo House lobby, down the stairs, outside, and past the pool, and it’s on the left. We ate here a couple of times during our stay, and the food was great. One thing to note about The Mara, however, is it’s currently only open until 10:00pm. We love to close down the parks, and one night in particular, when we were too busy riding rides to eat dinner, this really threw a wrench in our plans. We ended up ordering pizza on Door Dash (first time we’ve ever had to do that at Disney before!).

There are three table-service restaurants at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge— Sanaa is at Kidani Village, and Boma and Jiko are at Jambo House. We ate at Sanaa, and it was incredible—a new Disney World favorite for us! The Indian-style Bread Service and the African Triple Chocolate Mousse were the absolute stand-outs of our meal. This is a great place to try if you want something new and different, but don’t worry about bringing kids—the kids’ menu has both adventurous and standard options. My niece is the pickiest eater I know, and both her and my kiddo were very happy with their cheese pizza. 😆 You can see the full menu on Disney’s website here . Table-service restaurants require advanced dining reservations, which you can make up to 60 days out from your trip!

Transportation

One major drawback to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is that the only transportation option is a bus. This might not be a drawback for you if you drive to Disney World or plan to rent a car. But for us this was pretty unfortunate at times. When we were there in January 2022, the busses were not running consistently or often. This may have been due to staffing shortages (we saw many “in training” bus drivers throughout our stay), so I’m not sure that it’s always like this. But we consistently waited 20+ minutes for a bus to arrive. And, unless you’re going to Animal Kingdom, the bus rides are long. Besides Animal Kingdom, the next closest park is Hollywood Studios, which is about a 15 minute bus ride away.

After staying at Pop Century on our previous trip (which has the skyliner ) and coming from Bay Lake Tower, where we stayed on the first part of this trip, (which has the monorail) this took some getting used to! The night we wanted to go to Magic Kingdom for Extended Evening Hours for Deluxe Resort Guests, we waited 20 minutes for a bus and when it still hadn’t come (and we figured it would take another 20+ minutes to even get to Magic Kingdom), we decided to just stay at the resort and take the kids to the arcade instead. Major bummer!

Both Kidani Village and Jambo House have their own bus stops, though they do share busses. This varied sometimes, but generally the busses would drop off at Kidani Village first and then go to Jambo House. And they pick up at Jambo House first and then Kidani Village. Just a bit of a life hack: if you’re staying at Kidani Village when you get on the bus at the parks try to stay near the front or along the sides where you can get off easily whenever possible. If you’re sitting in the very back of the bus, you’re going to have to climb over everyone to get off at Kidani Village. 😆

two adults and two children in an arcade playing guitar hero at disney's animal kingdom lodge

Both Kidani Village and Jambo House have arcades. Kidani Village has the Safari So Good Arcade, which is located on the first floor around the corner from the lobby (near Community Hall and the elevators). This arcade is small but still fun and tends to be less crowded. Jambo House has Pumbaa’s Fun and Games arcade, which is located next to The Mara. This one is probably twice the size of the one at Kidani Village, but definitely gets more crowded especially in the evenings!

Our kids love arcades, and these were no exception! They certainly managed to spend all their allotted arcade allowance haha. 😆 Liam maintains, however, that the Pop Century arcade is still his favorite.

interior of the living room, dining area, and kitchen in a two-bedroom DVC villa at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge showing a couch facing a large flat-screen TV, balcony doors, a chair in the corner, and a banquet with a table and chairs for dining

We loved the room at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. As I mentioned above, we had a split stay on this trip. The first three nights we stayed in a two-bedroom DVC villa at Disney’s Bay Lake Tower Resort. The room at Animal Kingdom Lodge was roomier and more updated than Bay Lake Tower.

DVC villas have full kitchens, living/dining areas, multiple bathrooms, and a washer and dryer, which is SO NICE. Now I can see why people say once you stay in a one- or two-bedroom villa you never want to go back to a standard hotel room!

The BEST part about staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge is of course the savanna view!! Even if you don’t have a savanna-view room, both sides of the resort have areas where you can sit and watch the animals on the savanna. When we were there in January 2022, there were animals out on the savanna all the time! The giraffes (our favorite!) tended to be out really early in the morning, around sunrise when they eat. (It’s so cool to watch the cast members drive around the savanna and feed the animals in the morning!) But we saw all different animals at all different times of the day!

family on the balcony at Animal Kingdom Lodge looking at animals on the savanna

The balcony was our favorite part of this room. It was huge! It extended all the way across our room and had doors from both bedrooms and the living room and plenty of chairs for everyone. We spent every morning of our stay out here (as you can see above, we’re all in our pajamas haha) having coffee with the giraffes. I highly recommend getting up for sunrise at least once if you can. So gorgeous!

This might cramp your style if you’re a hard core Disney parks rope-dropper, but try to take at least one morning easy and watch the savanna. It’s worth it, I promise! But if mornings aren’t your thing, we also found there to be a lot of animals out in the early evening, around 5:00–6:00pm.

savanna view from disney's animal kingdom lodge, a sun flare in the top left with two giraffes among the trees

We absolutely loved our stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge. The unique table-service dining options, the quality of the room, and the savanna view just cannot be beat! If you have a real animal lover in your group, this is absolutely a must-do experience!

That said, I don’t think we will be jumping to book here for trips in our near future. Dining and transportation are probably the top two amenities we look for in a resort, and both of those were lacking for us at Animal Kingdom Lodge. When we go to Disney World, we like to be in the parks and we like to hop around. Having the ease of non-bus transportation options puts many resorts ahead of this one for us. Also the limited hours at The Mara really didn’t work for us.

I’m really glad we experienced a stay here, but in the future I would probably only book here if we were using DVC points (if someday in the future we have them!) and we were planning a more resort-stay type of vacation with less park time. Or for one or two nights as part of a split stay.

Have you ever visited Animal Kingdom Lodge? Where does it fall on your list of favorite Disney World resorts? I’d love to hear your thought in the comments below!

And don’t forget to pin this post for later!

Animal Kingdom Lodge Villas

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – Jambo House offers several options for villas. You can get a Deluxe Studio that sleeps up to four adults, a one bedroom villa that sleeps up to five adults, a two bedroom villa that sleeps up to nine adults, or a three bedroom grand villa that sleeps up to twelve adults. Each comes with different options for views, including the coveted Savanna view that allows you to look at the animals from the view of your porch.

Animal Kingdom Lodge 1-Bedroom Villa

The Animal Kingdom Lodge 1-Bedroom Villa comes equipped with a kitchen, including a refrigerator, oven, stove, and shelves fully stocked with anything you need. Past the kitchen you’ll find a small dining table, as well as a living area with a pull-out queen bed couch.

Screenshot by WDW Magazine

The living room leads out to a massive deck that extends through to the bedroom, connecting to form one long area for looking out on the savanna. Heading towards the bedroom, you’ll find a stacked washer and dryer, as well as a door to the bedroom and bathroom. In the bathroom, you’ll find a tub and shower, a toilet separated by a door, and a large vanity with two sinks for getting ready.

The bedroom has a King Bed with Simba and Nala silhouettes carved into the headboard. The bed has nightstands on each side, with another television available. And the sliding door leads out to the deck connected to the living room.

Outside, you’ll find the real star of the room — the view. You can look out on Animal Kingdom Lodge’s stunning savanna, home to animals such as zebras, giraffes, okapi, and more. You can enjoy taking in the stunning setting while enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning…

…or even take in the views of giraffes and other wildlife at night after a day at the parks!

While there are plenty of rooms that don’t offer a savanna view, if you are able to book one it makes for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience to get to take in the wildlife from the comfort of your room.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Culinary Tours

disney animal kingdom lodge room tour

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge offers two free tours of the restaurants around the resort. Not only are these Animal Kingdom Lodge Culinary Tours great afternoon diversions, but you also get to sample FREE food!

Culinary Tour: Jiko and Boma        Cultural Tour: Sanaa

Culinary Tour: Jiko and Boma

The culinary tour of Jiko – The Cooking Place and Boma – Flavors of Africa is a FREE 30-minute excursion into the cultural aspects of these great restaurants. The tour begins in the lobby of Jiko and guests simply show up a few minutes prior to the 4:15pm start time. You do not even have to be staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge to participate.

The tour is led by a cultural representative who can share stories and first-hand experiences that bring to life the design elements and culinary selection of the two restaurants. Your guide will take you in and around both Jiko and Boma as the restaurants are busy preparing for dinner. As you tour the restaurants you will be able to sample a few small items. Typically guests get to sample a soup and one of the popular zebra dome desserts.

This tour is not a major event, but is a great addition to a day at Disney without going to the parks . This tour could also help you to decide where you want to eat dinner if you plan to dine at Animal Kingdom Lodge, but are not sure which restaurant best suits your tastes. Younger children may not enjoy the culinary tour as it is an informational session full of facts, history, and culture; however, it is a fun 30-minute diversion for those looking for a unique experience.

This tour is held as Sanaa is preparing for the evening’s dinner, and guests are invited to sample a small taste of what is served. Typically the small sample includes breads and toppings for tasting.

The Cultural Tour of Sanaa is great for anyone interested in dining at Sanaa but unsure based upon the African-inspired menu. This is also a fun addition to a day at Disney without a park ticket , especially since there is so much to see and do around Animal Kingdom Lodge. This tour may not be well-suited for small children as it is informative in nature. This experience could be a good way to test if your child is prepared for other tour experiences around Walt Disney World if you are hoping to experience another tour during your visit.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

disney animal kingdom lodge room tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
