One of the perks of painting is that all of the necessary materials are fairly portable. This article will guide you through which travel art supplies are the easiest to pack and take with you.

We are lucky in this day and age to be able to carry our paints in small paint tubes and have easels that are light and foldable. However, there are a LOT of different materials out there and it can be hard to know what exactly you need to paint and travel. I will break down exactly what you will need, so that you can easily be a traveling artist, painting on the go!

Painting Surfaces Best for Travel

This is one of the more important of the travel art supplies you’ll need to remember to take with you. As wherever you paint you will always need something to paint on.

a hand with two rolled up canvas art supplies ready for travel

I recommend using loose gessoed canvas that can be rolled up. Boards will take up more space than stretched canvas. Not to mention you have to be a little more careful not to puncture or damage stretch canvases!

You can gesso your own canvas or purchase it already primed and ready to paint on! When you are ready to start your painting, you will simply cut out a size that is appropriate for your project. Then attach the piece of canvas to a hard board with some masking tape. This hard board will act as a support for all of your paintings on your journey. You will be able to use both sides if you wish to do multiple paintings at a time! I do this often 😉

Art Supplies for Storing Paintings and Canvas

To transport your canvas I recommend to roll it up and store it safely inside a mailing tube. This provides excellent protection for your painting surface and keeps it from getting any creases.

an artist holding a mailing tube that is being used as an art supply carrying case

In addition, I recommend for you to use the mailing tube to store your completed paintings on your travels ( once they are dry ). Again this is a wonderful way to protect your work from getting any folds or creases. When traveling we often accidentally drop things or stack things on top of one another. Therefore storing your work in a mailing tube alleviates a lot of worry about any damage that may incur to your work!

✨ A quick tip about rolling up paintings – keep the painted side on the outside! I know this sounds odd but it is the best way to take care of your paintings while rolling them up. Rolling oil paintings inwards can cause them to chip or flake which will become visible when laid out flat again.

Travel Art Carrying Case

What if your paintings are still wet and you need to continue your travels? Enter the wet panel art carrying case ! You can purchase one or make your own. They allow you to store wet painting safely inside a box in such a way so that it won’t touch anything else. I personally keep my painting taped down to a board to allow for me to place my painting safely inside a carrier if I need to do so.

Art Supplies to Speed up Drying Time

If you are using oil paints and would rather not have to deal with wet paintings while traveling. There are specific travel art supplies that can help speed up the drying time.

Liquin for traveling artists

product image of a bottle of liquin

Liquin will help a great deal to speed up the drying time! Using just a little will go a long way. Add it to your paint at times when you would normally use linseed oil to thin out your paint.

Whenever I use Liquin in a painting, I take out a small amount of it from the jar using a palette knife and place a little pile of it onto my palette. This way it is easy for me to add it as needed while I mix my oil paints .

Lightweight Travel Easels

An easel can be a little bit of a headache for artists who are traveling, as it is most likely the largest item out of all your travel art supplies. However, there are some great travel easel options out there for every budget!

Pochade boxes for travelers

an open pochade box sitting on a surface with a view of the city behind it

A pochade box is one of the most popular easels for plein air painters and traveling artists. They are also quite historical as they came into popularity in the 19th century when artists started to paint out of doors. Pochade boxes tend to be small and are highly portable as you can store not just your materials inside them but also your painting. You can purchase one or make your own out of a cigar box!

French easel travel supplies

I personally use a French easel when I travel as well as in my studio. So, it is nice to be able to use the same easel that I always use when on the go. Similar to the pochade box, it allows you to store a lot of supplies inside the easel including your palette. It can be folded up smaller which makes it easy to carry and transport.

Travel easel in a room with art supplies on the easel's palette tray

However, the downside to a French easel however is that it can be a bit heavier than other options, due to its wood construction. So, if you are looking for something particularly lightweight, this might not be the best option for you.

Tripod easel with palette box

The tripod easel and palette box can sometimes be a good alternative to the traditional French easel. The versions made out of aluminum can be lighter weight and less prone to breakage. In addition, this variety gives you a good distance between the painting and the palette – something missing with a pochade box.

A good camera tripod easel with a palette box can be a little pricey. However, if you are planning to do a lot of plein air painting or walking with your painting supplies. It is really worth it to get a lightweight easel, as your back will thank you! 🙂

Brushes and Brush Cleaner

For traveling I recommend the Guerilla ‘mighty mite brush washer’ . It is leak proof, you don’t have to worry about soiling things when traveling with with linseed oil or turpenoid. In addition, it works as a terrific brush cleaner that lasts a long time.

the 4 oz Mighty Mite Brush Washer travel art supplies container

Palette cups

You could also use oil painting palette cups. These are small metal cups that you can clip onto your palette. They are not meant to be a brush cleaners however. So you can’t clean your brush in this as thoroughly as you could in a regular brush cleaner. However, these make for super useful travel art supplies. As they work great as receptacles to keep your linseed oil and or turpenoid in – when you need to use those in your painting.

Paints for Travel

Most paint tubes come in a large or small size – typically 37 ml or 150 ml size tubes. So, when traveling with your painting supplies it is best to use small sized tubes. As this will help a great deal with keeping the weight down.

a large blue tube of oil paint next to a smaller orange tube of paint

If small sized paint tubes are still too heavy and you don’t need to take that much paint with you… Then you could purchase small containers to store your paint in. Just keep in mind, that the paint will dry quicker in such containers than if it remained in a tube!

So, if you are planning to travel and paint for just a few days then small containers work nicely. However, not if you will be on the go with your travel art supplies for a couple of weeks or longer. As the paint will likely dry out over that period time.

If you haven’t already – grab my FREE Color Mixing Guide for helpful color mixing instructions and techniques!

Traveling with Oil Paints on an Airplane

It is possible to travel with your oil painting supplies on an airplane . However, there are a few things that are valuable to know before you start packing your travel art supplies! After traveling many times with oil paints – believe me when I say that you will appreciate knowing how to fly with oil paints!

It can be extra work to carry your painting supplies with you on the move – but doing so is deeply rewarding and more than worth it…

I am not traveling very far but when I do travel I have a few art supplies! And I have taken a couple of trips to Yosemite National Park, and Big Sur, and even Lake Tahoe it was beautiful with so much to paint! I have a few travel watercolor sets! And I have gotten good at scouting out a spot with natural beauty as well as shade!

' src=

Hi Abbi – oh that is wonderful that you have taken your art supplies with you to some of those beautiful places! Watercolor sets are the best for traveling as they don’t require many materials. I have found that painting in different places does make you better at being able to scout good painting locations – and its wonderful when shade accompanies a good painting view 😉

' src=

Hi Elizabeth! I have been Plein Aire painting for years. Since I paint locally one of the best aids is my garden wagon. It collapses and stays in the car trunk ready to load up and head into nature filled up with all the painting supplies mentioned. It is better than using a backpack!

Hi Sandy! Oh that is a really good tip. What a great setup to be able to collapse it and keep it in your car. I completely agree – Carrying everything in a backpack can be quite exhausting as once you reach your destination you are a bit too tired to paint! 😉

How to set up a travel art kit.

stamps watercolor HP sproket journals on table

You know how sometimes art can seem like such a pain to make? Not enough time? Too many supplies to pick from? What the heck do you even create this time?

Even though I am a working artist, I can sometimes struggle with these things too. But I’ve got a shortcut that works well for me and I think it will for you too.

Let me introduce the art travel kit. Out of everything I do for art, this is one of my favorite “art systems” I love to use.

It’s just so much fun. It makes art-making easy and approachable.

I’ve broken down my exact formula in this post below. You’re going to fall in love with this kit.

This post contains NO affiliate links. All opinions are mine.

Whether using it at home, traveling from the kitchen table to your bedside, or if it’s slung into your backpack for a day out, a kit can make your art accessible and fun.

I’m pretty much in love with all things pouches. My husband likes to make fun of me and “my bags”. But let’s face it, a good bag can make all the difference in your life and your setup, can’t it? Those of us who love our bags know this is the truth. And if you don’t know, it may be you haven’t met your perfect bag match yet!

Now, here’s the little secret. This particular art travel kit has never actually left my house. I have another one for that. It’s smaller and gets popped into my backpack whenever I go somewhere in the car. This little beauty stays with me at the house. And I LOVE THAT!

travel art kit bag

Why do You Need an Art Travel Kit?

  • Simple to put togethe r-all you need is just a few supplies.
  • Eliminates overwhelm- less overwhelm = more art making and fun
  • Makes art more accessible – the more art you make, the more opportunity to learn, grow, and enjoy!

travel art kit bag

This little kit gets grabbed way before any of my other art supplies. It’s just so simple and relaxed. It’s all right there, ready and waiting for me, everything I need.

All the choices have been predetermined. Imagine, you’ll have only what you’lI need to work on your journals. No more extra supplies dragging you down. There are no heavy hitter decisions that you will have to make before you get to work. This takes that beginning edge off. You’ll already know what to expect during your art making session. And honestly, I think it expands our creativity because we have to find new and interesting ways to use the limited supplies.

Plus, it’s easy to transport. From coffee table to bedside table, from the floor to your lap, it fits perfectly in your hand and is so easy to carry around all over the place.

How to Choose the Perfect Pouch

Firstly, in my opinion, the pouch is super important. So I decided to include my best tips for choosing one.

  • Feel -how does it feel in your hand. It’s gotta feel good. Do you like the way the fabric feels? Is the size nice for your hand? Is it easy to carry? How about, is it easy to tuck in next to you?
  • Size -this goes along with feel. Does it hold what you want it to hold? Keep in mind, this is your travel kit, not all of your supplies. You only want the ones you’d use “on a stranded island” type idea. You want it not too big, not too small, but juuuuust right.
  • Durability -Does it sit nicely on the table or does it flop over letting everything spill out? Does it have enough give and stretch to allow for you to pack it with all the stuff you want in there?
  • Pockets -Do the pockets make sense? Are there enough of them? Do they fit your items well?
  • Zippers -Oh, zippers, you’ve got a big job to do. I cannot handle a bag with bad zippers. The ones that get stuck or are finicky. That’s a no go for me. The zippers have to perform over and over again with ease.
  • Look -is it pretty to look at? Does it feel “like you”? For me, I will sometimes choose journals or pouches that are just a bit more colorful than I naturally would want. Why? Because I want to easily spot them from across the room. White, black or neutrals can easily blend in. I want these sorts of items that don’t have a permanent home and move around with me to be easily spottable. A nice pop of color helps me locate the item quickly.

What to Put Into Your Art Travel Kit

stamps watercolor HP sproket journals on table

Next, let’s chat about what to include. I LOVE mine to be simple. That’s where the beauty lies for me and what makes it work.

  • Journal -for this kit I’ve got a writing journal, one big, one small. I’m trying to decide which one I like. In the past I’ve used the big yellow one (again, that pop of color making it easy to find). But I’m thinking of switching to the small black one because it’s just so darn accessible. At some point, I’ll choose and take the other one out. I also have a Hobonichi Techo Original Book that I am loving right now. It’s little, has a numbered page for each day of the year, and is so carry-able. Oh, I just love it and will probably do a whole blog post on this alone.
  • Collage Papers – I found these awesome plastic envelopes from The Container Store years ago. They are thin and streamlined, making them perfect for a travel kit. They don’t hold much and that’s a good thing. I tend to choose a paper collection that is thin so that I don’t make my journal too thick for the binding. That’s the theory anyway. We’ll see how it goes.
  • Glue Stick -of course you need something to stick the paper down with. A tape runner would also work.
  • Stickers -I haven’t used these yet. We will see if they get to stay.
  • Reading Glasses -I like to have a pair that lives just in this bag. That way they are always there and I don’t have to go hunting.
  • Watercolor -just a simple travel set will do.
  • Letter Stamps -along with a small acrylic block for mounting and an ink pad. I’m not a big stamper at all, but my goodness do I love this font from Ali Edwards . It’s also the perfect size for a planner/small journal.
  • Photo Printer -this is pretty much the coolest thing since sliced bread. It has no ink and is zinc based (how does it do that?!). This little contraption prints out sticker photos on the spot. You link it to your phone with an app and it can print any of your photos. The quality is so-so but for this application I see it as a win! This is a very fun tool.
  • Waterbrush -you need one for your watercolors. Water plus a brush all in one.
  • Pens -I like to use ones that aren’t going to smear with water.
  • Scissors -you could also include a small pair of scissors that I don’t have pictured here. Sometimes I just use my fingers to tear the paper.
  • Pouch -of course! I’m in love with this one from Delfonics .

So Much is Possible With a Traveling Art Kit

  • O pportunity to learn
  • Quick and easy access
  • Art every day- (or lots of days, I’m not really into the “every day” kinda thing)
  • Affordable – (or more so than a whole art studio)
  • Relationship -I guess what I’m really trying to say, is because it’s so easy, transportable, and simple, you have a chance to form a relationship with the kit and with your art. It becomes a little part of you, a warm spot that feels good to settle into, zip open the pouch, dig around inside, open up the latest crinkly page in your journal, and just start. Every day a new day of possibility.

What a great idea! I have a travel case with duplicate tools so it’s always ready, and I have a portable kit for my personal journaling with pens, washi, stickers, etc. But this has given me a wonderful idea for at home art. Working in my art journal has been difficult for a while and I think it’s cuz I have toooo many supplies to choose from. I’m going to put together a kit so when I want to art journal I just grab it and start. Thanks so much!

That’s wonderful Marilee. I always love learning about other people’s setup. And I agree about too many supplies. It can feel overwhelming, can’t it? I can’t wait for you to set up your kit and see what you think. Hopefully, lots of good art-making ahead for you!

OMGoodness!!! You have just solved my problem!!! I’m in the midst of having to acquire materials that have gone missing (no telling how that happened) and rearranging an entire room to accommodate me, art supplies, and a family room. Because of this I have been unable to create! I have several projects I’m involved in yet I have to move from room to room to do one or the other, toting boxes of materials along with me. Very exhausting. Thanks for best idea I’ve ever needed!

Woo hoo! That’s fantastic Judith that this idea came along at just the right time for you. Now you can carve out a little “nook in a bag” for your art-making. All the best to you in all your projects.

Do you have a link to this pouch? Or printer?

' src=

Just a quick note – your link to the pouch leads to the Small version. The size you use is the Medium. They look exactly the same in the photo so it is easy to get confused. I read the tag in the photo of yours and did a quick comparison. Could you modify your link so it goes to the correct size? Really helpful blog – thanks so much!

Hi Nicole! The link to to pouch is in the text of the post (it’s kinda hard to see, it’s in blue). Here it is again: https: https://amzn.to/3LhGaMJ . Here is the link to the printer. https://amzn.to/3LpeuoX . Hope that helps. Have fun!

Love this set up and the pouch is fantastic! Thanks for sharing this Shay. I think I need to have that pouch! Tee hee!

Yes Jakki! You’re right! Thank you so much for letting me know that. It’s all updated with the correct one. I really appreciate it. So glad you liked the blog. All the best.

Hi Lisa! Don’t we love a good setup? Yes, we do! Love, love this pouch. I accidentally linked to the smaller-sized pouch but just corrected it. Be sure to click on the corrected link if you are interested in getting it. All the best!

Thanks for the great tip on artmaking on the go – even if only from room to room to the backyard. I would LOVE to see you blog at length on how you work in your Hobonichi planner! I am using the Hobonichi Cousin and am a first timer and loving the paper. I use the full daily pages for my creative space with watercolors, graphite and pen. Please do expound on your experience!

Hi Janis! Oh gosh, isn’t the paper so awesome? I just love the way it feels, so smooth and beautiful to work on. I would love to do a blog post on the Hobonichi and think I will. I am new to it as well but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a mainstay in my art-making arsenal for a long time, I love it so much. I’d love to hear/see your experience too, on your Hobonichi. Keep me posted. All the best!

Thank you Shay for this great blog post! You’ve given me some great solutions, not just for a travel kit, but also some storage ideas for my tiny studio. Win win!!

2nd this! 🙂

Took the post right out of my hands LOL, was going to express the same almost word for word 😋👍

Woo hoo! Isn’t that fun Leigh? And I LOVE organization and good systems. Total geek about it. Have fun putting everything together! All the best!

I hear ya Steffy! 💕

' src=

wow this is perfect

' src=

this was very timely – headed out of town in a couple weeks and had been thinking about taking some supplies along to do a little journaling. now I can have fun getting some backgrounds done on some pages and putting a little “kit” together. what non smear water-resistant black pens are your favorites? always on the hunt for good ones!

That’s great Reen. I’m so happy you enjoyed it!

Hi Teri! What perfect timing for your trip! I’ve had some luck with Copic Multiliners, Sakura Pigma Micron, and Pilot Precise V5 Stick for my pens. I would always recommend testing first. Especially as I’m not overly particular so it’s possible I wouldn’t notice smearing as much as someone else might. All the best! Hope this helps.

Enjoy the Journey with the Best Travel Art Kits for Kids

By The ARTnews Recommends Editors

The ARTnews Recommends Editors

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, ARTNews may receive an affiliate commission.

ARTNEWS RECOMMENDS Faber-Castell Do Art Travel Easel Set This art kit offers the best-quality kid-friendly art supplies in an easy-to-manage format. The lightweight carry case folds to become a tabletop easel that can support full-size paper. Kids can also draw directly on the surface of this easel, which features a whiteboard on one side and a chalkboard on the other. Faber-Castell provides not only chalk and dry-erase markers but also colored pencils, a sharpener, sketchpad, and beeswax crayons that are soft yet durable. The crayons are especially nice, smoothly laying down vivid colors and designed with triangular bodies to prevent them from rolling off tables. Kids ages 4 and up will enjoy independently creating with all these supplies, which fit neatly into an integrated drawer.

WE ALSO LIKE Crayola Create ’N Carry Art Set Less expensive than our top pick, Crayola’s option comes with some of the brand’s most popular tools. A sturdy carry case contains eight fine-line markers, eight gel markers that show up beautifully on dark paper, 12 colored pencils, and 30 mini sheets of construction paper (they’re about the size of a postcard). Each medium comes in its own box, and you can either keep them boxed or simply chuck them in the case’s four compartments. There’s plenty of room to store additional supplies, too. When closed, the case doubles as a work surface, and it features eight holes in which to store implements so they remain within reach without rolling away—even if the art-making is happening in a car.

ANOTHER GOOD CHOICE Play-Doh Starter Set  If your kid is a budding sculptor or loves tactile crafts, a Play-Doh kit might be just the thing. This one comes with four 2-ounce tubs of modeling compound in four colors as well as cookie-cutter-like templates in four shapes. In addition, kids get mini tools to help them manipulate the Play-Doh, including a pair of scissors and a pizza cutter—all child-safe, of course. These tools are quite tiny, measuring about 2 to 3 inches long, so we recommend this kit for toddlers and preschoolers. Everything fits easily in a clear and sturdy plastic storage bag with a handle.

A GREAT ALTERNATIVE Alex Desk to Go Tired of giving your children art supplies they don’t like? Play it safe and pick up a basic portable desk that they can pair with favorite tools and materials they already own. This one features a sturdy 9-by-12-inch surface with a cushioned back so kids can support it comfortably on their laps. The flat top features corner straps to secure a thick sketchbook or a stack of paper. On both sides are generously sized zippered pouches that can hold dozens of markers, crayons, and the like. When empty, the entire accessory can be compressed into a skinny briefcase with a handle.

ALSO CONSIDER Crayola Color Wonder Stow & Go Studio This is an excellent drawing kit that covers the basics and can easily be slipped into a backpack—or even the seat pocket of a car or airplane. The slim storage case is less than 2 inches thick and measures about 9 by 12 inches—still large enough to use as a drawing surface when closed. Inside, find 30 blank papers in fun colors and four chunky, easy-grip markers, with individual slots to hold each drawing implement. The markers are designed to be mess-free, formulated with an ink that shows up only on Crayola’s special paper, so parents and guardians don’t have to worry about stains on clothing, skin, or upholstery.

Creativity in Therapy

Inspiring therapists and counselors to be more creative

June 27, 2016 by Carolyn Mehlomakulu

Make An On-The-Go Art Kit for Travel

By the time this post goes up, I’ll be on vacation in Canada. As I was preparing to pack (and thinking about what to write in advance for this blog), I decided that I would share about my travel art kit.

If you’re a creative therapist, you hopefully make some time for your own art-making in your life. So, you may have occasion to be packing some traveling art supplies, either to bring on a trip or to carry around in your bag to use when you have free time. (If you’re not making art, you should make time for it! Art-making is excellent self-care. Did you see the latest research  from Drexel that showed that art-making reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol, regardless of your skill level?)

Unfortunately, I never do as much art as I hope to on vacations, but I always like to bring some art supplies with me. And my son is getting more and more interested in drawing and painting, especially when he sees me doing it, so I thought that some art supplies might help with toddler boredom on the airplane.

Thinking about a traveling art kit was also making me think about my past time spent as a “traveling” art therapist. Most of the time, art therapy is done in the therapist’s office, where we ideally have lots of awesome supplies for our clients to use. But I have also had jobs where I had to travel where the client is, doing both home-based therapy and school visit therapy. I didn’t want to stop doing art therapy, so I put together an on-the-go art therapy box. Although lots of different media and supplies are great, art therapy really only requires the therapist, the client, a single art medium, and a surface to create on.

So, here’s what has ended up in my traveling art kits…

My current travel kit for vacation is minimal and small because it needs to fit easily in my carry-on bag, along with all the other things that a traveling toddler will need. This is the type of art kit that would be easy to throw into a large purse. Everything would fit into a pencil bag, but I put mine into a clear zipper pouch that I had.

Travel Art Kit | Creativity in Therapy | Carolyn Mehlomakulu

  • Small Journal or Sketchpad*
  • High-Polymer Eraser
  • Black Micron Pen
  • Travel Watercolor Set (mine is Winsor & Newton)
  • Full sized Watercolor Brush
  • Mini Colored Pencils (I have Xonex Micro Colored Pencils )
  • Markers (For the adult version, I would bring my  Tombow Dual Brush ones, but for my kid-friendly version, I got Crayola Washable PipSqueaks )
  • Baby wipes for clean-up

* I have a small journal for myself and made my son a small journal from a recycled file folder and scrap paper. Cut the folder in half and fold for the cover. Fold paper in half and staple down the center crease. Use tape along the front page and the back page to secure to the cover.

My Travel Art Therapy Kit

travel art kit bag

  •  Plastic storage box to hold everything (mine is from Target). You can also use a file storage box, messenger bag/satchel, etc. I like the box because it doubles as a surface to draw on, so if you’re using some kind of bag, make sure to include a clipboard.
  • Layer of collage images
  • Drawing paper
  • Colored Pencils
  • Pencil and sharpener (or mechanical pencils)

Your on-the-go art therapy kit can be as elaborate or simple as you want. You could also add…

  • Oil or chalk pastels
  • Construction paper or other colored paper
  • Watercolors and brushes
  • Watercolor pencils or crayons
  • Water brush
  • Modeling clay
  • Wipes for clean-up

* Be mindful of your therapy setting when choosing supplies for community-based services; you don’t want to bring messy materials if the client won’t really be able to use them.

I feel like it is my magic carpet bag filled with art supplies that thrills me every time I unpack the bag. I always have to have a traveling art supply bag. For my upcoming trip I must pack lightly which means a journal and pens and markers. Thanks so much for sharing.

*i recently took a small box of oil pastels and cut paper on a cruise. I did a two pieces on time out before dinner several nights. I even processed a Holocaust Memorial that I visited. I kept getting better results by practicing regularly. Lol. Then I decided to use them on the flight home (5.5 hrs), so I packed them in my ‘purse’. I got stuck in security because they were thought to be fire crackers via xray. They had to go through my bag, kept dusting for gun powder… and finally let me go with art materials in hand. A fun art story for me.

Thanks for sharing that story! I would have never thought that oil pastels would look suspicious.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

travel art kit bag

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

travel art kit bag

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

travel art kit bag

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

travel art kit bag

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

travel art kit bag

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
