The Two New Golf Video Games Are Awesome, But One Is the Clear Winner

  • Author: Nick Menta

It’s been nearly a month since EA Sports PGA Tour made its long-awaited return during Masters week on April 7. That means gamers have had ample time to compare and contrast EA’s newest offering with the series that rose up in its eight-year absence: PGA Tour 2K . Having spent the last few weeks bouncing back and forth between both titles, I’m excited to offer this look at how EA Sports PGA Tour and PGA Tour 2K23 stack up.

EA’s producers and marketers spent considerable time hyping their game’s visual fidelity — and they delivered. As you’d justifiably expect from a brand-new, next-gen title that took nearly four years to develop, PGA Tour is far and away the best looking golf sim that’s ever been brought to market. Thanks to EA’s Frostbite engine, LIDAR scans, drone flyovers, Augusta National agronomic data, and old-fashioned conversations with course superintendents, the game’s more than 30 venues provide a genuine sense of place. Because each course has been engineered to play in a slightly different way — with St. Andrews sporting 100-yard rollouts and Harbour Town offering the chance to flag approach shots on spongy bermuda greens — each course has its own identity. These features shine through thanks to the game’s array of shot types, making a round at Bandon Dunes a markedly different experience than one at TPC Sawgrass.

Right now, 2K23 doesn't compete when it comes to how these courses look side by side.

It’s true that 2K’s real strength is in its vast library of user-generated courses, but that’s a credit to the users themselves. Judging studio against studio, the same officially licensed courses present in both games look nothing alike.

Winner: EA Sports PGA Tour

I’ve been playing golf video games dating back to Tiger Woods ’99 , and EA Sports PGA Tour is the first golf sim to ever make me think my way through a round.

PGA Tour features 20 different shot types, allowing players to chart their own way around a given track and to employ some creativity in the process. For years, golf sims have featured standard shots — drive, approach, pitch, chip, putt, usually a flop, maybe a punch — and most every shot in most every round has felt more or less the same. But PGA Tour finally makes a virtual round of golf feel like a real round of golf.

During one of my first rounds at Augusta National, my ball settled over the back of the green at the par-3 4th and I found myself actually thinking through the different ways to save par. Rather than aiming straight at the pin and employing as much spin as possible — as I would in any other golf game I’ve ever played — I opted to aim left, check a low runner into the slope, trundle the ball over the fringe, and watch it work its way sideways toward the hole. As nerdy and granular as this sounds, it’s revolutionary for a golf game and a massive step forward in terms of what it means to be a sim. That, and scorching a 290-yard stinger with a 2-iron is just plain fun.

If there’s a drawback, it’s that PGA Tour isn’t challenging enough. You can win a major in career mode on the hardest settings, with the AI scoring turned all the way up, well before you ever max out your player’s stats and abilities. In part, this is because you’re never really going to hit the ball very far offline. Odd as it sounds, PGA Tour is really a game about shot selection and course management; the execution is a little too baked in.

While 2K23 is a more straightforward experience with fewer options and less in the way of creativity, it will allow you to blow the ball off the planet with a poor swing. The perfect golf video game would likely be found in pairing EA’s shot types with 2K’s swing stick.

Short of that ever coming to pass, EA would benefit from making its own swing mechanic more sensitive and more subject to operator error. Considering PGA Tour ’s arcade mode still features the old-school, button-mashing mechanics players will remember from the Tiger games, it makes sense to greatly dial up the difficultly on the harder levels for those interested in an elite sim experience. Introducing wider misses, more scrambling, and more in the way of risk would make PGA Tour’s already significant gameplay advances even more meaningful.

Online Play

PGA Tour features daily, weekly and seasonal tournaments on varying difficulties from Arcade to Pro to Tour, giving players a range of competitive experiences. Then there’s head-to-head matchups and social outings, which support live play from up 16 users at once. You can actually see other players on the course and watch their shots in real time. This was a feature in EA’s Rory McIlroy title in 2015, and it returns eight years later, while 2K23 ’s ranked matchmaking mode still features just one player and one shot at a time.

That said, EA doesn’t offer anything in the way of 2K’s “Online Societies,” which allow groups of users, large or small, to run their own tournaments. You could set up a quick tournament or a short season with a few of your friends, or you could join TGCTours , an online hub for thousands of 2K users that organizes 18 weekly events, organized by settings and skill level. The site features daily leaderboards, a promotion and relegation system, and its own world ranking.

As it stands, EA’s initial online tournament experience is a little too detached. You play on your own, you post a score, and you earn some rewards; but it never really feels like you’re part of an event, playing against other users. In addition to giving users the opportunity to organize their own events, EA would be wise to consider recreating a TGC Tours-like experience on its own servers — grouping the wider community of players by flights. EA will never be able to offer the sheer quantity and variety of courses available available in 2K, but an online career arc would give players something to work toward and a reason to keep playing week after week.

Winner:  PGA Tour 2K23

Course Offerings

Those of your who have read these columns in the past know about my affinity for 2K’s custom course designer. The 2K series was born out of a niche game originally called “The Golf Club,” built solely around golf-course design. Over time, that game evolved, secured the PGA Tour license, changed its name, and eventually put Tiger Woods on the cover.

While 2K has gotten bigger and better over time as a golf sim, the course designer is still the primary reason to pick up this game and to keep playing. Individual users have produced a staggering number of real-world recreations and original designs.

Having spent a month with both games, I feel comfortable telling you — if you’re looking for a PGA Tour sim — to go play PGA Tour over 2K23 . And if you’re only comparing what the studios themselves have produced on a course-by-course basis, EA comes out ahead, thanks to superior graphics and gameplay.

But if you’re looking to play Pine Valley or Cypress Point or Royal County Down or whatever course you can think of — you’ll be shocked at what you can find on the game’s servers — you’ll still want 2K23 .

Winner: PGA Tour 2K23

Product roadmaps and future releases

Both PGA Tour and 2K23 release periodic updates with new courses, features and fixes.

2K23 recently added Payne’s Valley and Spyglass Hill to its official stable of courses and will soon debut Pinehurst No. 2.

PGA Tour , meanwhile, will roll out the year’s three remaining major venues — the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club (North), and The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool — in addition to Olympia Fields (North), site of the 2023 BMW Championship, and Marco Simone, home to 2023 Ryder Cup . The producers are also currently working a Ryder Cup gameplay experience, but they are tight-lipped on details.

As for what comes next? 2K has been working on a two-year product cycle, which would theoretically point to a potential PGA Tour 2K25 . EA’s producers, separately, took four years to get to this point and are not yet committing to a future timetable. For now, they’ll be updating this version of the game based on gameplay data and player feedback.

Big Picture

EA Sports PGA Tour has set a new bar for graphics and gameplay. The question is whether the game is deep enough and challenging enough to keep players around after they’ve bested career mode and maxed out their golfer’s RPG progression. My above suggestions related to EA creating its own online career arc and dialing up the difficulty would go a long way to extending this game’s ongoing replay value.

As for PGA Tour 2K, what was the only PGA Tour sim on the market now feels like its been lapped in relatively short order. Sooner or later, the graphics engine is going to need a serious upgrade to even approach what EA is offering.

More to the point, the HB studios team would be well served to focus on what it really means to be a golf sim. Too much of the ongoing development of this game is related to features that either alienate the game's most ardent fans - consumable golf balls - or don’t add gameplay value . Relationships with influencers  may be good for marketing and social media presence, but this doesn't matter much for the players at home who already own the game. Too often with PGA Tour 2K , it feels like the users are creating the content and value.

Hopefully, with EA back in the market and two Tour titles available, each studio will push the other to up its game.

'EA Sports PGA Tour' 2023 release date, price, courses, consoles and more on newest golf video game

Those who indulge will be able to play at major championship venues such as augusta national.

ea sports pga tour tiger woods

EA Sports is officially back in the golf video game space with its impending release of "EA Sports PGA TOUR". Marking its first venture back to the golf scene since "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour" in 2015, the return to consoles will feature stark contrasts compared to those that came before. Having previously featured cover athletes such as McIlroy and primarily Tiger Woods from 1999-2014, this year's edition of the game will not include a big-name superstar on the cover. EA Sports will instead lean on new gameplay options, advanced technology and the inclusion of some of the most storied golf courses around the world.

Below is everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming release of "EA Sports PGA Tour".

Release date

The official release date for "EA Sports PGA TOUR" is Friday, March 24, just two weeks before the 2023 Masters. This makes some sense as the game will feature a Road to the Masters gameplay option.

Price and consoles

The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Featuring three different editions, each will come at a different price point. The "Deluxe Edition" is available for pre-order at $84.99 while the "Standard Edition" comes in at $69.99. Lastly, the "EA Play Pro Edition" is listed at $99.99/yr.

The game will include 30 courses in total, and boasts some of the world's most prominent venues such as Augusta National Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Southern Hills Country Club, The Old Course at St Andrews Links, The Country Club, Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Ocean Course, Torrey Pines, Evian Resort Golf Club in Évian-les-Bains, France, East Lake Golf Club, TPC Southwind, The Los Angeles Country Club, Wilmington Country Club and more. It will also feature the major host courses from 2021 and 2022 as well as the new 2023 majors courses releasing post-launch.

You can play the game as Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Champ, Xander Schauffele, Sungjae Im, Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and Hideki Matsuyama.

My Career mode

The game will include a role playing game mode-type progression in the Road to the Masters. As one's golf game improves, the likelihood of donning the green jacket or raising a major championship trophy increases. Users will be able to create and customize a golfer and develop their skills through the 20 different shot types available. From there, players will compete in major championships, participate in some of the PGA Tour's best events -- such as The Players Championship -- and ultimately the FedEx Cup. In addition to this, players can take on top amateur championships including the Augusta National Women's Amateur, the U.S. Amateur and other elite international amateur events.

LPGA and the Amundi Evian Championship

In partnership with the LPGA, fans can compete at The Amundi Evian Championship, one of the LPGA Tour's five major championships. They will also have the opportunity to play as several female athletes as well as create a female golfer in the Create-A-Player feature and be able to participate in a series of LPGA-themed challenges and other events.

New technology

  • True-to-Life course visuals:  EA's Frostbite engine uses state-of-the-art equipment such as drone technology, custom LiDAR flight helicopters and more to develop terrain maps allowing to game to depict courses exactly as they appear in real life
  • ShotLink:  Golfers will authentically be replicated with accurate player ratings, skills and magnified true-to-life in-game events by utilizing the PGA Tour's proprietary real-time scoring system since 2001.
  • Trackman data:  Insights from TrackMan will allow for authentic gameplay utilizing a myriad of stats including club tuning, flight trajectory, landing position and much more.

What about Tiger Woods?

Woods is no longer with the EA Sports family after their partnership from 1999-2014. The 15-time major champion is now with the 2K franchise , and made it known to his followers where they can play as him.

The only way to play as me, and my friends, is in PGA TOUR 2K23, available now. #team2k pic.twitter.com/5lwCJ73o4v — Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) January 20, 2023

Is Tiger Woods in EA Sports PGA Tour?

Is Tiger Woods in EA Sports PGA Tour? Answered

Image of Shaun Ranft

For the first time since Rory McIlroy PGA Tour (2015), EA Sports have released their very own PGA Tour game. And while there is plenty to separate it from past installments, players may be wondering if arguably the greatest of all time, Tiger Woods, graces EA’s game once again. So, is Tiger Woods in EA Sports PGA Tour? Let’s dig in.

Does Tiger Woods Return in EA Sports PGA Tour?

The short answer is no, Tiger Woods does not appear in EA Sports PGA Tour . If fans of golf videogames wish to play as him, though, they do have that opportunity. You’ll just have to play PGA Tour 2K23 instead, where Woods is not only playable but also serves as “Executive Director”. After nearly a decade since last appearing in an EA Sports golf game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 in 2013, the franchise then turned to McIlroy the following year before licensing deals expired.

The 47-year-old joining up with 2K this past year doesn’t seem to have effected EA, however, who have gone back to the drawing board with their latest offering in hopes of offering the most authentic experience possible to players. Additionally, there are plenty of other pros to choose from, such as Jordan Spieth, Scottie Schefler, Nelly Korda, and Lexi Thompson just to name a handful.

That’s all you need to know with regards to whether or not Tiger Woods is in EA Sports PGA Tour . For more in-game information, be sure to check what else Twinfinite has to offer at the links below.

EA Sports Ready to Battle Tiger Woods With Revived PGA Tour Video Game Series

New EA Sports PGA Tour logo at TPC Sawgrass

On the heels of Woods joining 2K Sports’ golf franchise, EA is back in the game as well.

Just two weeks ago, Tiger Woods announced his return to video games as the new face of 2K Sports’ PGA Tour golf series. Now, to kick off Masters week, the studio behind the golf game that formerly featured Woods as its cover athlete made it clear that it was throwing its hat in the ring, too.

For the first time since 2015, EA Sports PGA Tour is back.

Coming soon. 🎮👀 EA SPORTS PGA TOUR, a new next-gen golf game. — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 29, 2021

At this time, it’s not clear just how many PGA Tour golfers will be playable in the game — Woods certainly will not be among them given his exclusive deal with 2K — or which iconic courses will be rendered in all their glory for the current console generation. But in this early stage, both EA and the PGA Tour are excited for what’s to come.

“EA Sports and the PGA Tour have created some of the most memorable golf video game experiences together, and we couldn’t be more excited to expand our sports portfolio with a new golf title on next-gen hardware,” said Cam Weber, general manager and executive vice president at EA Sports. “Our team of passionate golf fans is meticulously recreating the world’s top courses such as Pebble Beach, and we can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to compete on some of the most iconic PGA Tour courses and win the FedEx Cup.”

The game will be powered by EA’s Frostbite physics engine, made famous in other EA series like FIFA, Battlefield, Madden, and Star Wars Battlefront. An earlier version of Frostbite was used for Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, EA’s last edition of their golf franchise before it was discontinued.

After being seriously injured in a car accident in late February, Woods is expected to make a full recovery. He’s given no indication that his career might be over. After winning the 2019 Masters, he made seven tournament appearances last year and has not competed in a PGA Tour event since the 2020 Masters last November, at which he finished 38th.

For years, if you wanted to be golf’s best, you had to get by Tiger first, and that remained true for EA’s golf franchise, which bore the 15-time major champion’s name and likeness on every edition from 1998 to 2013.

Times may be different now, but it’s more than clear that with this new jolt of competition between developers, golf video games are in a better place today than they were yesterday.

And the EA-versus-Tiger battle for supremacy will be a spirited one.

The definitive ranking of every Tiger Woods PGA Tour video game

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2004-2.png

Last August, the newest golf video game—PGA Tour 2K21—was released to the public, quickly becoming a hit among golf fans. While there had been a number of golf games released since the final iteration of the Tiger Woods video game series (in 2014), this was the first one that felt like a must-have, even without Woods' name on the box.

Seven months later, it was announced that Woods will in fact be back on the box. The 15-time major champion has inked a long-term deal with 2K , meaning he'll be returning to a console near you in the future. Rejoice, Cyber Tiger is back.

Of course, this news comes not long after Woods was in a single-car accident, one that has had him hospitalized ever since. Hopefully, Woods makes a full recovery and returns to the real course.

In the mean time, fans might get to relive their Tiger Woods glory days with Woods on an Xbox or Playstation again soon. That got us feeling nostalgic, so naturally we ranked all 16 iterations of the Tiger Woods franchise.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2006.png

2006 was a very weird year for all the EA Sports games. It was basically a lame duck year, as Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were now the systems to have. That left ’ 06 games in limbo for PS2 owners. Essentially, they were the same game as the year before with a couple of dumb, shiny new features. This was definitely the case for the “Tiger Woods” series as well. ’ 06 was as forgettable as they come.

Not all that different from 1999, which we’ll get to in a bit.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2002.png

The first year of the analog stick swing. Literally changed the game.

Honestly, 2003 was great, but what came after it makes its existence almost irrelevant.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2011.png

One of the big selling points for 2011 was the Ryder Cup mode, which flat out stunk. If you’re going to introduce an event like that into the game, one people hold very near and dear to their hearts, you’ve got to do it right. Funny enough, they introduced a pretty big event in the 2012 version of the game and nailed it.

This is purely out of respect for the franchise. Back to where it all began. Graphics? Terrible. Gameplay? Pretty good for PS1 in 1999! After years and years of playing with the analog stick, I can’t imagine playing a golf game where you had to time a meter like you’re kicking a field goal in Madden, but that’s the way it was. Kinda cool that it was exactly Tiger’s swing, but it didn’t feel like you were controlling him. Like I said, this is out of respect. By the way, something I just learned in doing research for this ranking was that there was an “Easter Egg” in the first 100,000 pressings of the game that played “Jesus vs. Santa,” a lost episode of South Park, which is on YouTube . I’m not kidding.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2001.png

The first “Tiger Woods” to be on PS2 had strong graphics and looked much more like the video games of today, as opposed to the Golden Tee-esque versions of 1999 and 2000. But this game still had the whack swing meter.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2009.png

I think the only thing separating ’ 09 from ’ 08 was Hank Haney being your coach in the game. The hell was that about?

Might as well just lump 2008 and 2009 together. Kind of forgotten years in the series in my opinion. The big jump on the new systems came in 2010. Although, none of the newest games have the Jesus shot:

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2007.png

This year was a massive step forward for the game in graphics and presentation, which makes sense given it was on the new systems. The real fun, however, was on the PS2 version, which I still own. There was a great team mode and some fun fantasy courses (I believe there was a course in Central Park in this game). But the best part was the addition of Riviera, a course I must have played a thousand times in that game. I guess that means I was “woke” before “woke” even existed, which is an elite level of woke-ness.

2010 was a hit for many reasons, and I think the Nintendo Wii version was the most popular of the bunch this year. But I had it for Xbox 360 and it was just delightful. First off, it was perhaps the best cover of the series, featuring Tiger’s famous, double-fisted U.S. Open celebration at Torrey Pines. That was a particularly nice touch because this was also the first year the U.S. Open was in the game, which coincided with the year it was back at Pebble Beach. Most importantly, this was Anthony Kim’s video-game debut, which was such a monumental occasion that there’s video of Tiger talking up Kim in one of the game ’ s trailers. This was probably the first time in the game’s history that I popped in the disc for the first time and played with someone other than Tiger, that someone being Kim.

Considering it wasn’t all that different from ’ 12, ’ 13 probably shouldn’t be this high, but sometimes more of the same is good. ’ 13 continued to focus on Augusta/The Masters, and the collector’s edition of the game even had a green-jacket ceremony. The two best additions to the game were Rory McIlroy, who was somehow left out of 2012 after being in 2010 and 2011, and Dustin Johnson. They both returned in ’ 13 and ’ 14 and were easily the second- and third-best players in the game behind TW. ’ 13 was the last year of Adam Scott and Justin Rose, who were each staples in the franchise for years. Course-wise, ’ 13 also made some great adds in Royal County Down, Royal Birkdale, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Crooked Stick and PGA National.

Some may be scoffing at this being No. 4, which is fair. The first year of Augusta National and a “ Road to the Masters ” career mode in a video game should be worthy of No. 1, but the game only got better in its final two installments. With the introduction of Augusta also came the familiar voice of Jim Nantz, which no one complained about. ’ 12 also featured “The Caddie Experience,” which was cool for all of the first 10 minutes until it became redundant. New golfers included Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, the Molinari brothers, Zach Johnson and Bubba Watson. Sadly, this was the final year of Anthony Kim in the series. Pour one out, folks.

While the year we still haven’t gotten to is the game’s peak, 2005 is actually my favorite year of “Tiger Woods.” Gameplay was similar to the previous year, but there were welcome additions like the ability to adjust your stance/ball position to hit it higher or lower, and the ability to hit a punch and flop shot as well as chips and pitches. Putting was the same, with the same caddie advice and a back and through stroke once you read the putt, but this was the first year of “Tiger Vision,” which you got to use a handful of times per round with the use of the R1 button. By holding it down, your player would zoom in via a narrow cone (just like Tiger!) and see exactly where to aim the putt, turning a sure three-putt into a 76-foot eagle conversion.

Where this game separated itself was the legend mode, which allowed you to unlock Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and, of course, “Sunday” Tiger Woods. Trying to unlock all those greats, a sick soundtrack, and new courses like Harbour Town, Colonial, Sherwood, Greek Isles (fantasy course) and, my personal favorite, Couer d’Alene, where I once shot 48 with “Sunday” Tiger and … lost to a buddy of mine who shot 46 with Hogan, had me glued to this game for hours on end.

The last “Tiger Woods” game was, in my opinion, the best of the Xbox 360 era, though I won’t fault any ’ 12 or ’ 13 truthers for wanting those higher on this list. All three had Augusta National, which is enough to put them all in a tie for second, but ’ 14, the historic edition specifically, just did it for me. You could play Augusta National in 1934, reverse routing and all. New courses included Muirfield Village, Royal Troon and Oak Hill. In a brilliant nostalgia play, the game also brought back unlockable legends: Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Sam Snead. There were even different versions of them, like an early 1960s version Jack Nicklaus and a late 1970s Jack Nicklaus, and you could compete as all of them or against them in reenactments of their greatest career moments. The game’s best feature, however, was having all four major championships in career mode. Much like Michael Strahan, the “Tiger Woods” video game went out on top with the ’ 14 version.

I could just write “DMX. That is all” and drop the mic, but that wouldn’t fully describe this game’s GOATness. Everything about it was perfect right from the “Up in here” opening montage. There were 20 courses, the most in a Tiger Woods game to that point, including new additions like Bethpage Black and Sahalee, as well six fantasy courses (Black Rock Cove was a personal fave). 2004 also featured “Game Face,” which allowed you to create your player’s face to your exact liking, wrinkles and all. The gameplay wasn’t all that different from 2003, but it didn’t need to be. Once the analog stick was introduced, the gameplay was pretty much perfect in the PS2 era. But 2004 was its peak.

EA Sports PGA Tour: Road to the Masters is a golf game unlike any other

EA Sports PGA Tour: Road to the Masters is out now.

Didn’t score Masters tickets this year? Still trying to cope with the fact you might never peg it at Augusta National? Those things might not change, but you can still visit Augusta … virtually.

For the first time since 2013, Augusta National is back in video game form with the latest release of EA Sports PGA Tour.

EA Sports, known for its popular Madden NFL and FIFA titles, is relaunching its popular golf series in 2023 for the first time since 2015 — and it’s bringing back the home of the Masters as part of it all.

Augusta National hasn’t been in the game since 2014, the last time the series was released under the “Tiger Woods” name. Augusta is one of 30 different courses now available on the new game, with more courses — like major hosts Oak Hill and Los Angeles Country Club — coming online as those majors get underway.

EA’s return to the golf world means that golf gamers have the option between two PGA Tour-licensed golf games for the first time. 2K Sports released its third PGA Tour-licensed game, PGA Tour 2K23 with Tiger Woods, last fall.

The EA game was officially launched on Masters Friday, and we at GOLF have been putting it through the wringer to see if it’s a worthy golf simulation game. Here’s what we learned.

What we liked

Slide 1

Graphics and Aesthetics: In the run-up to the release of the game, the EA Development Team credited significant advancements in video game visual technology with bringing the series back from its nearly decade-long hiatus.

They weren’t kidding. Not only do the courses look stunning — EA producer Ben Ramsour told GOLF a screenshot of Augusta’s 13th green was mistaken for a photograph — but also the swing animations have finally started to appear lifelike.

You can really see EA’s attention to detail with the equipment highlighted in the game. From Callaway and TaylorMade drivers to Scotty Cameron putters, most of the game’s most modern offerings are available to users. And it all looks like the real thing. EA even brought insane detail into recreations of the trophies from golf’s majors, which brings us to the next item…

The four majors : Unlike the 2K games, EA Sports PGA Tour features exclusive rights to all four of the men’s major championships, meaning that the majors are now playable in career mode. That also goes for the U.S. Amateur, as well as the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. You can also play in the LPGA’s Evian Championship .

Each major has a unique broadcast package, with specific lines of dialogue from the broadcast team — a solid grouping that reunites Rich Lerner with Frank Nobilo, Notah Begay III and Iona Stephen. Nick Faldo even handles a spine-tingling intro for the Masters.

Slide 1

Career mode : You have three options of where to start your career: as an amateur in either the U.S. Am or the ANWA, a pro playing on the Korn Ferry Tour or by skipping those steps and heading straight to the PGA Tour.

I chose to start as an amateur, winning the U.S. Amateur to qualify for both the Masters and U.S. Open. My player made the cut on the number at Augusta (I have yet to break 71 there, more on that in a bit) and then earned a solid top 10 at the U.S. Open. Eventually, I’ll have to tackle Korn Ferry Tour Q-School before advancing up the ranks into the world of the PGA Tour.

As you play rounds or challenges, which can range from easy to very difficult, you earn XP to level up your golfer and earn skill points to improve your ratings and add shot selections to your repertoire.

Gameplay and shot types: Finally, a golf game has done justice to the stinger and the knockdown, two of my favorite shots. You have to level up your golfer enough to unlock these speciality shots — at which point you need to learn how to use them — but it’s fun to see a game actually delve into shot-making.

I’ve been playing on a custom difficulty in between the two most-difficult settings, “Tour” and “Simulation.” This means my shots are penalized or rewarded for timing, my clubs are recommended to me by carry distance, not total yardage, and I don’t get putt previews or shot trails. In the past, I’ve found golf video games were too easy in the mid-difficulty levels and far too difficult at the harder settings. With the latest EA offering, I’ve found a balance that allows me to shoot some “normal” scores that a pro would shoot on a real course.

The actual swing mechanic works nicely into the user interface. Some people have noticed some lagging in the timing, but it rarely impacts me significantly.

That said, Augusta National is hard. I mean, seriously hard, especially around the greens. I have yet to break 71 there and it’s mostly due to the crazy slope in the greens. That makes not only putting difficult but also chipping and approach shots.

Thanks to new ball flight and ball behavior settings, shots seem to react like they would at ANGC. Miss the tiny plateau in the upper right corner of 6 green? You’re going all the way back to the front left corner. Come up short on 9? You’ll be rewarded with a fun 50-yard pitch. Go long of the Sunday pin on 18? Good luck with that putt.

As expected, you also won’t get the same kind of spin at say, Bandon Dunes or St. Andrews, where the ball bounces and bounds like a true links course. These tendencies are independent of what the course setting is too. “Tournament” conditions at St. Andrews will naturally be firmer than at Augusta, but green speeds in Georgia will be quicker.

What could be better

I’m no video game expert (I only ever buy golf and basketball games at this point) but here’s what I, as a golfer, would like to see.

Short game: Short shots have always been the toughest to replicate in video games for some reason. Thanks to the new ball behavior, putting from off the green is finally reasonably accurate. The game also added a spinner shot, basically a lower pitch that checks, which I found myself using most of the time once I unlocked it. However, I still find myself using the flop shot at times I wouldn’t in relief simply because it spins way more than it should, even out of the rough. Also, where the spinner checks a little, the regular pitch and chip shots don’t. It would be very hard to recreate Tiger’s chip-in from the 2005 Masters.

Real-world weather : I believe the previous EA games had access to real-world weather that would allow you to play courses in real-time conditions. I would love to see that again as the tournaments I’ve played had random wind directions and speeds each day. Plus, the PGA is in May now — no way there’s perfect weather all the time!

Parting thoughts

The graphics and actual shot types make this game a must-have for any golf-loving video gamer or a video game-loving golfer. But then again, a golf game with Augusta National might be enough to earn “must-have” status alone.

After Tiger Woods’ 2K23 game came out around the same time this one was teased, I thought more people would gravitate toward 2K thanks to Tiger’s name (which was part of the success of EA’s previous games ).

But EA deserves a big chunk of the market share with this game. They knocked it out of the park with a vastly superior experience both from a visuals and gameplay standpoint. Would I love to play with Tiger in this game? Yes — but I’d argue having access to some of the best venues in golf is more important. I’d also love to figure out how to use EA’s graphics on a golf simulator, because the game has some of the best golf visuals I’ve ever seen.

EA Sports PGA Tour is out now for PlayStation 5, Xbox S|X and PC; the standard edition costs $69.99 and the deluxe edition costs $84.99.

2K Sports’ PGA Tour 2K23 launches Oct. 14 with Tiger Woods on the cover , beating rival EA Sports to shelves by about six months. The pro golf simulation will include 20 real-world courses at launch, with hundreds more available from the community thanks to HB Studios’ robust Course Designer .

Real-life stars gracing PGA Tour 2K 23 ’s roster include Woods, as well as 2022 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and the LPGA’s Lexi Thompson. Rich Beem and Luke Elvy are back in the commentary booth, this time joined by GolfTV’s Henni Koyack with on-course reporting.

PGA Tour 2K23, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, will be the third golf simulation title published by 2K Sports, which acquired developer HB Studios in March 2021. HB previously published The Golf Club and The Golf Club 2 for consoles before integrating PGA Tour licensing in The Golf Club 2019 .

Meanwhile, EA Sports has yet to volunteer a launch date for its EA Sports PGA Tour revival, announced in 2021 and delayed by a full year into 2023 back in March. That game, however, will feature all four major championship tournaments on their real-world courses — including the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. PGA Tour 2K23 ’s MyCareer mode features more than a dozen real-life tour stops, including the season-ending Tour Championship and the seasonlong FedEx Cup championship.

A news release on Monday said that several casual and minigame modes that made online play very popular in PGA Tour 2K21 will return for 2K23 , along with a “Clubhouse Pass” of seasonal, unlockable content, coming from nine PGA Tour sponsors licensed to appear in the game. PGA Tour 2K23 will launch with three editions; all of them include a Michael Jordan Bonus Pack, which includes the basketball superstar — and notoriously competitive amateur golfer — in the playable roster. The Deluxe Edition and digital-only Tiger Woods Edition add more in-game customizations, bonuses, and content; both will be available three days early, on Oct. 11.

Correction: A previous version of this story misidentified the platforms on which PGA Tour 2K23 will be available. In addition to PlayStation and Xbox consoles, the game is coming to Windows PC via Steam. We’ve edited the article to reflect this.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Games

Everyone is stuck inside at the moment so now is the time to dust off the old Playstation, Xbox or computer and get the Tiger Woods PGA Tour games back into your staying inside rotation.

The series of immensely successful games began in 1990 and was simply called PGA Tour Golf. Several editions were made over the next few years and then the decision was made to put Tiger Woods on the cover for the first time on the 1999 game.

EA Sports reportedly paid $10 million for the rights to use Tiger's name and likeness. As a result the game would then be rebranded to be called Tiger Woods PGA Tour, followed by the year.

Which game did you play the most? Which was your favourite? And should they make a present day version? Let ys know via our social media channels.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Games

The 1999 game was not released without a hitch as an employee of Electronic Arts snuck a precursor episode of South Park called Jesus vs Santa onto the Playstation disc. This could be watched if the disc was put into a computer and selected ZZDUMMY.DAT with the media player.

The 2000 game received mixed reviews with many complaining about the difficult and inconsistent putting however a number of features proved popular, such as the nine different Tour professionals you could play with or against, the overall graphics, and several different formats. The Course Architect was also a very good feature in which you could construct your own course.

The next year EA Sports introduced a create your own player feature which seemed to go down well but the lack of Tour players and different courses held the game back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVIPZ1_oobI

2002 expanded off the back of those criticisms as lots more players were added as well as courses like Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass, and Royal Birkdale. The game received excellent reviews which ensured success in later years.

In 2003 little was done by EA Sports in terms of playability, it played pretty much exactly the same as 2002. But they did introduce little tweaks and new elements to really improve the product.

The sound of the game improved massively with improved commentary, more background noise like waves and birds, and also there was more emphasis put on animation from the players.

One of the things I remember most was how the game kind of went out of its way to compliment you and make it an incentive to improve your player with stats like top performances, personal bests, average scores, tour trophies, scenario medals.

ea sports pga tour tiger woods

2004 was the game I played religiously more than any other. There was a big expansion in the number of courses you could play such as Bay Hill Club and Lodge, St. Andrews Links (Old Course),  Torrey Pines (South Course), TPC at Sawgrass (Stadium Course), TPC at Scottsdale (Stadium Course), Princeville Resort, Kapalua Plantation, Pinehurst #2, Bethpage Black, Spyglass Hill, Poppy Hills, Sahalee Country Club along with several fantasy courses.

The Game Face feature also expanded what you could create in terms of your own player and for the first time you could do a proper PGA Tour season as you enter four-day tournaments.

All the usual courses were on this game but the fantasy courses really took it up a notch with Greek Isles, Emerald Dragon or Paradise Cove.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaGSpUhlSPg

Also the Legend Pursuit was a brilliant feature - you had to go up against a variety of characters and tour professionals to earn the honour of going up against one of the legends in the game who were Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Ben Hogan and Gary Player. Beat them, and you could then go up against Sunday Tiger Woods.

Another cool new feature was Tiger Proofing which allowed you to redesign courses to make them easier or harder once you unlocked them.

In 2006 the controls were tinkered with, with the right analog stick being the shape stick to allow you to fade or draw the ball in a different way. The caddie feature also came in but once you got good at the game you didn't really listen to them.

Much of the game remained the same in 2007 although there was improvement in the graphics. They introduced Riviera, The National, The K Club, and the Ocean course at Kiawah Island too.

ea sports pga tour tiger woods

Once again there was little to differentiate this game from the previous years iteration.

The 2009 controls were a lot more forgiving than 2008's and Hank Haney was also added to the game to help coach you.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Games

The game with Tiger's iconic 2008 US Open celebration on the cover was another I played a lot. The main thing I remember was the expansion in equipment and costumes you could use.

2011 was the first game to feature Tiger alongside another golfer, this time Rory McIlroy .

ea sports pga tour tiger woods

The one we all had been waiting for as Augusta National was one of the courses you could play on the game.

Chairman at the time Billy Payne said "EA Sports, Tiger Woods and the PGA Tour have developed an extremely successful franchise that responds to one of the popular entertainment choices of kids today. We hope our inclusion will foster an appreciation for the history and traditions of the Masters and inspire the next generation of golfers." All the proceeds went to the Masters Tournament Foundation.

I remember how excited I was by this as I realistically knew I would never play Augusta. To many, this was as close as you were going to get.

ea sports pga tour tiger woods

EA Sports put the cover to a fan vote in terms of who would go alongside Tiger. The two most popular selections were Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler.

It also had a Kinect feature on the Xbox 360 where you could swing and the game would pick it up.

The Collectors edition also had has a Green Jacket presentation ceremony, five additional courses than the standard edition, and Augusta National’s Par 3 course and Tournament Practice Facility.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 game, players can not only take on the stars of today, such as Woods and McIlroy , but also the shining lights of yesteryear.

In a new ‘Legends of the Majors' game mode, players could take on the late Seve Ballesteros, the big three of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, as well as American legends Lee Trevino, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and golf's first international superstar, Bobby Jones.

Players could battle it our with these legends in all four Majors, perhaps taking on Jones in the US Open, Nicklaus in the Masters or Ballesteros in The Open.

This was the last game in the series with Tiger Woods in the name as in 2015 the game became Rory McIlroy PGA Tour 2015.

EA Sports PGA Tour: Release of new game made popular by Tiger Woods delayed

EA Sports PGA Tour, which began releasing games with Tiger Woods' endorsement in 1998, will be released in Spring 2023.

ea sports pga tour tiger woods

The video game EA Sports PGA Tour, which was scheduled for release this year, has been pushed back to Spring 2023.

More: Bryson DeChambeau pushing for The Masters

Electronic Arts have not given a reason for the delay. It was originally scheduled to be released in November 2022.

Back in 1998, EA began releasing their golf games with the endorsement of Tiger Woods. Woods was reportedly paid between $6-7million a year by EA.

This latest game was announced in March 2021. It marked a year-long hiatus from EA. There are some pretty cool features that gamers will enjoy.

So far, we know that it will feature The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, The Open and FedEx Cup Playoffs. The game will also include the LPGA Tour.

EA have not confirmed the platforms their next game will appear on but presumably it will target current consoles and/or PC.

Elsewhere, there are a number of new courses that gamers will be able to play.

They have previously teased the likes of Augusta National, The Old Course at St Andrews Links, The Country Club in Brookline and Southern Hills Country Club.

EA Sports has been the dominant force in sports gaming for decades. They have annually produced popular titles like Madden, FIFA and NHL.

EA memorably vacated the golf game scene following the release of Rory McIlroy PGA Tour in 2015.

McIlroy, then in his mid-20s and looking like the hottest property since Woods, appeared as though he was going to be the game's leading man.

Some critics felt the game's release felt unfinished and they never followed with a sequel.

When it does arrive, the game will be available on the "next generation platforms".

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online is free and in full swing

In conjunction with this year's Masters tournament--and Tiger Woods' return to golf--EA Sports has launched a free Web version of its popular golf franchise.

ea sports pga tour tiger woods

  • Maggie Award for Best Regularly Featured Web Column/Consumer

ea sports pga tour tiger woods

While everybody these days seems to have some sort of diverging opinion on Tiger Woods, the man, it's pretty hard not to really like Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online , the video game. In case you haven't heard already, the best thing about it is that it's free--or at least a good portion of it is--as EA Sports has brought the freemium model to its popular golf franchise.

To get started playing all you need to do is go to the Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online Web site , sign up for an account, and you'll be good to go after a quick setup process (the browser-based game works on both Macs and Windows machines). At least initially, you can only do a very limited amount of customization to your avatar (one of the game's shortcomings right now), but once you get out on the course, the graphics are pretty decent and the game plays smoothly--and quickly. You can move from hole to hole in a few minutes and play a round in around half an hour (at least at the beginner levels). A running IM feed on the left side of the screen allows you to interact with other players, talk trash, or just give a running commentary of how well--or badly--you're playing.

You can either choose do a career mode where you play by yourself or challenge other players (you can meet up with friends online and organize your own tournaments). As for what you get by upgrading your membership to premium level ($9.99 a month or $59.99 for the year), you can play any course available, not just the two "open" courses EA has designated as free courses. At the moment, these include St. Andrews and Sheshan, but EA says it will soon start rotating the "open" courses. Other than access to the premium courses, free players can do everything else.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online also employees a points-based transaction system that allows players to purchase packages of points at $9.99, $19.99 and $39.99 that can be used on in-game transactions, such as rounds of golf and Pro Shop items that will improve your play. If you purchase the annual membership, you receive unlimited rounds on all available courses and you get a package of points that can be spent on Pro Shop items. Like all freemium games, the idea is to get you hooked on the game and have you spend some extra dough to get more out of it or gain a performance advantage.

For now, the free version has no ads, but it's highly likely that as the audience grows we'll start to see some. Reps for EA said that improvements were on the way. For instance, at launch character customization is just skin tone and clothing (from the Pro Shop), but that more customization options would be rolled out in the near future.

"The beauty of this product is the flexibility to make changes as we go based on community feedback," a spokesperson for the game told us. "We aren't tied to an annual iteration timeline."

Anyway, we encourage you to give it a whirl (it's free, after all). As we said, the beginner levels are very forgiving, so you'll be shooting well under par right off the bat. One warning: the gaming is pretty addictive, so be careful about playing at work unless you're playing against your boss.

Now if EA would just do this for Madden, we wouldn't have to upgrade and be slightly disappointed each year.

Anybody else played Tiger Woods Online yet? If so, let us know what you think of it, and how it can be improved.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Review

  • First Released Sep 20, 2004 released

He may not be the unbeatable prodigy in real life that he once was, but Tiger Woods has become just about the only game in town when it comes to golf video games.

By Ryan Davis on March 25, 2005 at 10:33AM PST

He may not be the unbeatable prodigy that he used to be, but Tiger Woods has become just about the only game in town when it comes to golf video games. Bolstering this standing that much more, EA Sports kicks off the launch of the PSP with a game simply titled Tiger Woods PGA Tour, which is basically a shrunken-down version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004...with a little bit of 2005 mixed in for good measure. It's almost boggling that such a complete package can be had on a handheld, and it's one that will be difficult for anyone with a taste for golf (or just golf video games) to resist.

Established fans should feel right at home with this handheld Tiger.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour features a solid implementation of the analog swing mechanic the series has been refining for years now. It's extremely intuitive. You just push down and up on the PSP's analog disc, and you'll watch your golfer move in tandem. Any deviations off the vertical axis will result in some curve on your ball, though the game isn't particularly punishing in this regard. The right shoulder button can be tapped while you're swinging to give your shot a little extra kick, and while the ball's in the air, you can use the right shoulder button in tandem with the analog disc to control the spin on it. Those already familiar with Tiger will be able to pick up the game instantly, and thanks to the forgiving mechanics and a good hands-on tutorial, it's pretty easy to pick up...even if you've never played a golf game before.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 introduced the "Game Face" feature, a character creation system that let you customize the appearance of your golfer to an almost absurd level. Game Face comes through in Tiger for the PSP, though it's not the "Game Face II" found in Tiger 2005, which added even more depth to the process, including a swing editor. Still, the character creation system here will likely exceed the needs of most players, what with 36 specific physical traits for you to play with.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour streamlines the different modes of play that have been available in the past. At the top of the list is the efficiently self-descriptive quick play mode, which is, as you might anticipate, good for playing a game...quickly. The legend tour represents the most substantial mode in Tiger, putting your custom golf pro through dozens of head-to-head and tournament games that have been broken up into rookie, pro, and legend ranks. The legend challenges mode represents yet another repackaging of the old scenario mode found in past Tiger Woods entries. As before, these challenges present you with a series of specific scenarios, whether it's coming back from a string of bogeys or playing the toughest greens the game has to offer. As established Tiger players should expect, these scenarios are rather good at testing specific sets of skills.

Beating your competitors in the legend tour and winning medals in the legend challenges mode both earn you a fairly substantial cash prize, as will the various sponsorships you'll pick up along the way. And all this glimmer can be put to good use in the pro shop, where you can purchase a ridiculously wide array of performance-enhancing gear. The money can also go directly into your character's skill stats. The game doesn't start off particularly brutally, and as you improve your character, it actually seems to get easier in some respects, though the computer-controlled opponents you'll face will do a good job of matching your impossible string of eagles. By contrast, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 was considerably easier. So it seems EA Sports has learned its lesson and decided to retune the game a bit for the PSP.

Though EA hasn't taken its PSP games online yet, Tiger Woods PGA Tour still offers some great multiplayer options. You can go head-to-head with another player using the built-in Wi-Fi functionality. There are standard stroke, skins, match, and long drive shootout games, as well as the new "Bingo Bango Bongo" mode. BBB is sort of like speed golf, though instead of solely rewarding speed, you're also rewarded for the longest drive and for getting your ball closest to the pin. The pacing in BBB is frantic, and really, it doesn't quite jive with the overall pacing of the rest of the game, which is otherwise much more methodical. The wireless multiplayer in Tiger is honestly a little clunky, allowing both players to have menu controls, which can create a tug-o-war dynamic. But it's still quite usable. More interesting still is the game's party play mode, which lets up to four players compete on a single PSP in short-form skins, long drive shootouts, and stroke games by simply passing it around. This mode seems like it would be particularly attractive for lengthy road trips.

Aside from the breadth of content in Tiger Woods PGA Tour, the most impressive thing about the game is the way it looks. It appears to be running on the same engine that powers the console Tiger games. A lot of the details have been simplified. Specifically, the character models seem to have fewer polygons to them, and the textures are noticeably blurrier. Even still, it maintains a nice, realistic look and even includes a few of the dramatic camera angles that have lent the series a distinctive flavor in recent years. All this "pretty" comes at a bit of a price, though...specifically in terms of time. Tiger Woods PGA Tour has some pretty serious load times all over the place. This would be quite a detriment to more-action-oriented games, but golf doesn't suffer from a more disciplined tempo.

Load times aside, this is simply an irresistible game of golf.

Gary McCord and David Feherty have been the commentary team for Tiger Woods PGA Tour for years now, and you can tell this by how comfortable they sound here. Their deliveries are natural, unhurried, and more irreverent than ever. Even though this means you'll have to hear a few more bad puns from Feherty, it can be amusing when one of the two miscalls a shot and the other chides him for it. Outside of the commentary, the environmental sounds establish a natural feel, though some of the crowd noises are more like gibberish than the vocalizations of excited gallery onlookers. The sound is rounded out by a nice selection of tracks--most of which are relegated to menus--from dance music producer BT. Still, they help establish a uniformly relaxed ambiance to the game, complementing the overall mood nicely.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour for the PSP is, across the board, the best handheld golf game to date. Though it lacks the online play and a few other details found in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005, it's actually a better game in some ways, as it takes the sport a little more seriously. Though there isn't any direct competition for Tiger just yet, this is still one of the best choices a sports fan can make at the US launch of the PSP.

  • Leave Blank
  • Intuitive, natural controls
  • Great character customization
  • Interesting multiplayer features
  • Horrible load times

Tiger Woods tracker: Live updates from the 2024 Masters

Tiger Woods sets up an eagle opportunity with a great approach shot, but settles for birdie on the second hole. (0:41)

Tiger Woods is back in action at his 26th Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club.

Woods entered Saturday one over par, coming off an admirable Friday effort where he had to play 23 holes due to a weather delay. He started off solidly, making par on the first three holes and erasing a bogey on four with a birdie on five. Things fell apart quickly, however, and he bogeyed the next four holes, double bogeying two of them. The back nine wasn't much kinder, with five bogeys to one birdie. Woods' third round was 10 over par -- the worst he's ever recorded at any major. He's plus-11 on the tournament and is far out of contention -- but considering all he had to overcome to get here, making the cut was an accomplishment in and of itself.

Here's how Woods fared on and off the fairway at the Masters in Round 4.

TIGER GOLF THE MASTERS

Tiger Woods remains focused on playing a full major season after struggling through the weekend to complete all four rounds at The Masters.

Woods impressed over the first two days to make a record 24th consecutive cut at Augusta National, posting scores of 73 and 72, before carding the worst round of his major career as a professional with a 10-over 82 on Saturday.

The 15-time champion major champion insisted he would be ready to return for the final day, with Woods using the support of his son Charlie in his warm-up ahead of the 100th competitive round of his Masters career.

Woods was four over after six holes of his final day but battled to make 11 pars and one bogey during the rest of his round, with a five-over 77 leaving him on 16 over for the tournament.

It is just the fourth time Woods has managed all four rounds of a competitive event since his Masters title defence in November 2020, having seen his schedule decimated by injury, with this week the first 72 holes competed in a major since finishing 47th at Augusta National in 2022.

Sunday struggle for Tiger at Augusta

Playing alongside amateur Neal Shipley, Woods fired a monster drive to set up a two-putt birdie at the par-five second but bogeyed the next after seeing a chip from just off the green roll back to his feet.

Woods returned to tee after a wild drive into the trees at the fifth, which he three-putted for a triple-bogey seven, then dropped into last place with another bogey at the par-three next on his way to reaching the turn in 40.

TIGER WOODS SUNDAY AT MASTERS

The 48-year-old continued to grind on the back nine but saw a run of pars ended when he went long of the green at the par-five 15th and failed to get up and down, while Woods received a warm reception from the Augusta patrons after scrambling par on his final hole.

"It was a good week all around," Woods said after his round. "I think that coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday.

TIGER WOODS THIRD ROUND THE MASTERS

"Unfortunately, yesterday [Saturday] it didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to. The way that Tom [Kim, who shot a final-round 66] is playing I thought I had in my system. Unfortunately, I didn't produce it."

Did conditions take their toll on Tiger?

Woods played 23 holes on Friday, the most in one day of a competitive tournament since 2019, with former coach Butch Harmon believing that was a factor in him fading over the weekend.

"When he shows up, Tiger actually feels like he can compete," Harmon said. "This guy doesn't dial it in. He doesn't quit. He kept trying all the way round.

"I'll tell you this, the round of golf he played on Friday, in that wind, was a clinic on how to play this golf course in those conditions. Unfortunately, I think that long day just did him in - he was just knackered, his body gave out on him

"He says he's going to try and play the PGA [Championship] at Valhalla. Let's see if that happens. I would love to see him, even if just for one round, to shoot something in the 60s to give us something to cheer."

Where could Tiger play next?

Woods targeted playing a tournament a month in 2024 after his 18th place finish at November's Hero World Challenge, only to withdraw from the second round of the Genesis Invitational through illness and admit his body was "not ready" to compete ahead of latest appearance at Augusta National.

The earliest he is likely to return is the PGA Championship from May 16-19 at Valhalla, the venue where Woods lifted the Wanamaker Trophy in 2000 as part of the 'Tiger Slam', with Woods not playing an event between the two majors since before the PGA Championship switched from its August date in 2019.

With Tiger Woods set to compete in this week's PGA Championship, check out highlights from his four previous wins at the tournament.

Woods is currently not in the field for the US Open in June, the first time as a professional he won't be exempt for a major championship, although is due to be recognised with the Bob Jones Award by the USGA that week at Pinehurst and could still be given a special exemption to feature.

A US Open appearance would be his first there since 2020, while Woods can also compete at The Open until he is 60 and will be aiming to feature at Royal Troon from July 18-21. Any appearances outside of the majors would appear unlikely, given he has only made seven official starts in the past three and a half years.

More homework needed from Woods?

Woods' future schedule remains empty on his official website, but comments after his finish final round at The Masters indicated his desire to prepare to complete the full major season.

TIGER WOODS THE MASTERS ROUND TWO

"This is a golf course I knew going into it, so I'm going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst, Valhalla and Troon, but that's kind of the game plan," Woods added.

"It's always nice coming back here because I know the golf course, I know how to play it. I can kind of simulate shots. Granted, it's never quite the same as getting out here and doing it.

"Just keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing. Hopefully the practice sessions will keep getting longer."

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The second day of the 88th Masters was never going to be kind to Tiger Woods. It was an intersection of worst-case scenarios, with Woods having to play early and often in cold temperatures. It takes him hours to get his battered body ready to play golf, which meant an early wake-up call Friday morning to resume his first round at 7:50 a.m.

He had to play the final five holes of his opening round before arriving at the first tee to start his second. For a man who said earlier this week that “every shot that’s not on a tee box is a challenge,” 18 holes is more than enough. Especially on the hilliest course players face all year. Add in the cold and windy conditions that make it difficult to loosen up a body pieced together by screws and rods and fused joints, and it seemed that the factors had conspired against him this week.

But Friday also was an opportunity to make more history at a course he admires more than any other. Woods said earlier this week that he is here to win. That he teed it up because he believes another victory is still possible “if everything comes together.” Victories are what drive him, but they do not cause him to downplay the seemingly mundane act of just making the cut.

On Friday, he had the opportunity to establish another record cuts streak. He was seeking his 24th consecutive made cut in this tournament, a streak that would surpass the mark he shared with Gary Player and Fred Couples. Despite the unfavorable conditions and his physical limitations, Woods did so with relative ease, shooting 73-72 to finish well inside the line . He was T25 when he walked off the 18th green Friday afternoon. He promised that a needling text message would soon be sent to Couples to mark the occasion.

“It's consistency, it's longevity, and it's an understanding of how to play this golf course,” Woods said Tuesday of the record. "Now, you still have to go out and execute it, but there's a lot of knowledge that goes into understanding how to play (Augusta National). …That's the neat thing about this. I can still go through the mental Rolodex and bring out a few putts from the '90s that still move generally in that direction and the effect that Rae's Creek has on certain shots and putts. And it means a lot.”

Woods’ affection for Augusta National comes not just from the genius of Alister MacKenzie’s design, which allows him to fully utilize his creativity and shot-making skills, but also because of the course’s annual accumulation of history. This is the same place where he played his first major championship, competing in 1995 as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion. He watched from the Crow’s Nest as Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead hit the ceremonial tee shots. Three years later, he marveled at the fact that those three were drinking the milkshakes he had on his Champion’s Dinner menu.

“There's such an aura and mystique about playing this golf course,” he said.

He played practice rounds with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in his first Masters, and has been playing here long enough to see the likes of Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler put on the green jacket. Augusta National spans generations. Woods missed the cut in his second Masters, so this record-setting streak started with his 12-shot victory here in 1997. He has won here five times but also played through swing changes and injury and personal scandal. No matter what, he has always found a way to make the cut. For two dozen years in a row.

Tiger Woods’ 1997 victory at the Masters | 25 years later

Woods tied the record last year by slogging through torrential rains and temperatures in the 40s as he completed his suspended second round early on a Saturday morning. Woods, who would need ankle surgery weeks later, was seen limping up the hill on the par-4 17th as he finished his round.

This year, he arrived at Augusta National with just 24 holes of competitive golf under his belt.

Though he said late last year that he hoped to compete once a month in 2024, Woods only appeared at The Genesis Invitational before this week. Six holes into his second round at Riviera, he had to withdraw with the flu . His body didn’t allow him to make another start before Augusta, he said.

“Some days I just feel really good,” he said, “and other days, not so much.”

Athletes reflect on Tiger Woods’ 2019 Masters victory

His mind, and his hands, are still world class. The question each time he tees it off is whether his body will allow him to use them to their full capabilities. Woods plays the role of wily veteran these days. No longer overpowering courses with his length, he hits a sliding fade off the tee to keep his ball in play and uses a crafty short game to stay around par. He made the cut easily despite hitting less than half his greens (17 of 36).

"His short game was so good. I don't think I can explain how good some of the chip shots he hit today were," said Max Homa, who played alongside Woods. "He's special.

"We had a really quick turnaround, and if I was feeling tired and awful. I imagine he was feeling even worse," Homa added. "All the cliches you hear about him and all the old stories about how he will grind it out, it was fun to see that in person."

Woods was 1-under par when play was suspended Thursday evening . He made two bogeys on the five holes he played Friday morning, signing for a 1-over 73. He started the second round with pars on his first two holes before playing a six-hole stretch without a single par. He made birdie on the third hole, hitting a 91-yard wedge shot to 9 feet before bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5, two of the course’s most difficult holes. Then he chipped in on the par-3 sixth. He made another bogey after finding a greenside bunker on the par-4 seventh and rebounded with birdie at the par-5 eighth. Five consecutive pars followed before a bogey at the 14th hole. But he reached the green in two to birdie the par-5 15th before closing with three consecutive pars.

“I'm here,” he said. “I have a chance to win the golf tournament.”

That wouldn’t be possible without making the cut. Add another record to Woods’ remarkable Masters career.

Tiger Woods on negotiations between PGA Tour, PIF: ‘Headed in the right direction’

Tiger Woods said that a meeting with PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan last month has helped with negotiations between the PGA Tour and PIF.

Woods, who has taken a key place in negotiations as a member of the PGA Tour Policy Board, and Al-Rumayyan were the headliners of a meeting the day after The Players Championship in the Bahamas, which included key representatives from the tour, PIF (which funds and operates LIV) and Strategic Sports Group (which has committed more than a billion dollars in funding to PGA Tour Enterprises). The groups continue to hunt for a solution that would seek to end the division between the two tours since 2022.

“I don’t know if we’re closer but we’re certainly headed in the right direction,” Woods said Sunday after his final round at the Masters. “That was a very positive meeting and both sides came away from the meeting positive.”

Woods shot a 77 in his fourth round and walked off the course in last place in the field, 16-over for the week. He made the cut after finishing the first two rounds at 1-over, but a record-high 82 on Saturday undid Woods. He had one birdie on Sunday (on the par-5 No. 2), three bogeys and one triple-bogey (No. 5, when he blocked his tee shot so far right into the woods he had to take an unplayable lie and retee.).

Just playing remains a considerable challenge for the 48-year-old Woods: he told his Round 4 playing partner Neal Shipley that he got up at 3:45 a.m. to begin to get his body ready for a 9:35 a.m. tee time.

This is the first major Woods has played all 72 holes at since the 2022 Masters, when he finished 47th. While Woods’ original timeline had him playing once a month this season, he did not play in between the Genesis Invitational in January and the Masters. The PGA Championship at Valhalla is next, from May 16-19.

Woods spoke about preparing to play it, the U.S. Open at Pinehurst and Open Championship at Royal Troon, though the preparation level will have to be different — he’s been forthcoming that he practices very little, and his Augusta course knowledge made the ramp-up to this event easier.

“I heard there’s some changes to the next couple of sites, so got to get up there early and check them out,” Woods said.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 Career Mode

We've added new features to Career Mode this year to make the mode better than ever. For the first time in the history of the franchise, the LPGA Tour is available.

Golfers can test their skills against the LPGA’s best players, like Stacy Lewis, Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen, Natalie Gulbis, and Lexi Thompson. Male golfers will find a whole new path to the PGA TOUR, with the new qualification changes to Q School and the Web.com Tour fully integrated into this year’s game. The inclusion of the LPGA Tour, along with an updated career path, only scratches the surface of the mode. So let’s dive in to see what else we have in store for you this year!

When you create a female golfer, you have the option to choose which tour you would like to play on.

Your road to the LPGA Tour starts in the amateur ranks. You can progress your way up through Symetra Tour and possibly Symetra Tour Q School to earn a spot on the LPGA Tour.

The LPGA Tour schedule consists of 22 events, including the Kraft Nabisco Championship, golf’s first major of the year.

On the male side, Q School is now the entry point to make it onto the Web.com Tour. The new Web.com Tour playoff structure has also been added. Play well in the playoffs to earn a spot on the PGA TOUR.

The PGA TOUR schedule features 31 events. For the first time ever, all four majors are fully licensed and included in the schedule. Other officially licensed tournaments include the Waste Management Phoenix Open, The Honda Classic, the Memorial Tournament, and the Travelers Championship, just to name a few.

The new Time of Day feature impacts career mode, changing the look of the course based on your tee time. The "By Position" setting will give you realistic starting times. If you are leading a tournament going into the final round, you will tee off in the afternoon. If you barely make the cut, you will start your weekend playing in the morning.

Statistics are now tracked and saved for all golfers in Career Mode. You can compare your season stats against the leaders on TOUR in many different categories such as Birdies, Average Par 4 Score, GIR%, and Putt Average. You can also sort between the current season, previous season, and lifetime stats.

After finishing last at Masters, Tiger Woods looks ahead to three remaining majors

AUGUSTA, Ga. — It was 1:22 p.m. Sunday afternoon and there was Tiger Woods, in his usual red, launching his final tee shot of the 2024 Masters onto the lush 18th fairway at Augusta National.

He was more than five hours too early. The final-round leaders weren’t even going to tee off for another hour.

After shooting an 82, his worst round in his life in a major tournament Saturday, Woods came back Sunday with a 5-over 77 to finish dead last at 16-over par, all alone in 60th place.

Woods, 48, who barely plays competitively anymore after his 2021 car crash crushed his right leg, said the biggest challenge for him throughout the weekend was the gusting wind that wrecked havoc on shots throughout the tournament.

"I think that just the wind and what it was doing out here to the golf shots and the balls and putting, how difficult the course was playing," he said. "It doesn't take much to get out of position here. Unfortunately, I got out of position a lot yesterday and a couple times today."

But Woods said all was not lost.

"It was a good week," he said. "It was a good week all around. I think that coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday.

"Unfortunately yesterday it didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to. Today the round that − the way that Tom (Kim, who shot 6-under 66) is playing − I thought I had in my system. Unfortunately, I didn't produce it."

Woods said he is planning to play the three remaining men’s majors this season, starting with the PGA Championship at Valhalla in May, then the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in June.

"This is a golf course I knew going into it," he said of Augusta National, "so I'm going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst, Valhalla and Troon (the British Open), but that's kind of the game plan.

"It's always nice coming back here because I know the golf course, I know how to play it. I can kind of simulate shots. Granted, it's never quite the same as getting out here and doing it. Same thing, I heard there's some changes at the next couple sites. So I’ve got to get up there early and check them out."

After his miserable weekend, there was no use looking back, so Tiger Woods did the only thing he knew to do, and that was to look ahead.
