Eldritch Blast 5e [DnD’s Best Cantrip + Spell Guide]

A beam of crackling energy streaks toward a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 force damage.

The spell creates more than one beam when you reach higher levels: two beams at 5th level, three beams at 11th level, and four beams at 17th level. You can direct the beams at the same target or at different ones. Make a separate attack roll for each beam.

Who can cast Eldritch Blast? Warlocks have Eldritch Blast on their class spell list. The only other ways to get Eldritch Blast involve picking up a feat (Magic Initiate, Spell Sniper), multiclassing Warlock for one level, and the Bard’s Magical Secrets feature(s).

Eldritch Blast 5e

Widely accepted as the strongest damaging cantrip in DnD 5e, Eldritch Blast packs a considerable punch from level 1 all the way to level 20. Let’s dive into what makes this seemingly simple spell so darn special.

How Does Eldritch Blast Work in 5e?

Eldritch Blast is a ranged spell attack that deals 1d10 force damage when it hits. To make a ranged spell attack, roll a d20 and add your spell attack bonus (proficiency bonus + spellcasting modifier ). The spellcasting modifier for Warlocks is Charisma.

Eldritch Blast deals force damage, which is one of the least common resistances in the game. At higher levels, a caster can send out multiple beams with one cast of Eldritch Blast, either all at the same target or at different targets in range. The caster makes separate attack rolls for each beam.

Finally, Eldritch Blast comes with a whole host of potential Warlock Invocations (acquired starting at level 2) that significantly increase the power and utility of the spell:

Agonizing Blast: Add your Charisma modifier to the damage on hit. This applies to each beam of Eldritch Blast, once you reach a level where it creates multiple beams.

Eldritch Spear: Increases range to 300 feet.

Repelling Blast: On hit, you can push a creature up to 10 feet away from you. This can trigger multiple times per turn, once you’re creating multiple beams.

Grasp of Hadar: On hit, you can pull a creature up to 10 feet towards you (once per turn). (XGtE 57)

Lance of Lethargy: On hit, reduce the creature’s speed by 10 feet until the end of your next turn (once per turn). (XGtE 57)

Note that you can apply multiple Invocations simultaneously — you are only limited by the maximum number of Invocations known for your Warlock level.

How to Use Eldritch Blast in 5e

If you’re going for a ranged, spellcasting-focused Warlock, you already know how to use Eldritch Blast — as your main source of damage. But if you’re looking to optimize your build around this cantrip from the start, here are some things to keep in mind:

Get Agonizing Blast early. You get access to your first 2 invocations at 2nd level. With so few spell slots, you’re likely going to be spamming Eldritch Blast through most early bouts of combat, so there’s no reason not to pick up Agonizing Blast (+Cha modifier to each of Eldritch Blast’s beam).

This will likely work out to around +50% damage, as your typical low-level Warlock has a +2 or +3 Charisma modifier, and Eldritch Blast’s base average damage is 5.5.

5th level is also a good time to pick up Agonizing Blast, as that’s when Eldritch Blast gets a second beam, doubling the potency of this invocation. Of course, you can always switch around invocations as you level, so you don’t have to feel too trapped by any decisions.

Concentration -buster/death save-skipper. Once Eldritch Blast gets multiple beams, it becomes akin to Magic Missile , with all its glorious utility. This makes it great for breaking a baddie’s concentration (they’ll have to make a Consitution saving throw each time they’re hit) or skipping death saves (they auto-fail one roll each time they’re hit).

Max Charisma ASAP. Most Warlocks will be doing this anyway, but the faster your Charisma modifier gets maxed out, the sooner your Eldritch Blast starts hitting like a truck with Agonizing Blast.

Battlefield control. If moving enemies around the room like chess pieces sounds more fun than just outright blasting them, Repelling Blast and Grasp of Hadar are a lot of fun. Coupled with terrain damage or allies’ area of effect spells , like Spike Growth or Web , being able to place enemies just where you want them can be incredibly rewarding (and optimal).

What Are the Rules for Eldritch Blast in 5e?

There are no complicated rules for Eldritch Blast itself, but there are some interactions with other spells, features, and Invocations that are worth clearing up:

The Sniper Feature does stack with the Eldritch Spear Invocation, bringing the spell’s total range to a whopping 600 feet. For multiclassers with at least three levels in Sorcerer, you can also apply Distant Spell for an insane 1,200-foot range.

With the exception of Grasp of Hadar and Lance of Lethargy, each invocation applies to each Eldritch Blast beam. For example, you could push one creature 40 feet away from you in a straight line with Repelling Blast, or push 4 different creatures 10 feet away each (assuming each beam hits, of course).

Eldritch Blast can be Twinned using Sorcerer’s metamagic if the caster is 4th-level or lower. But once Eldritch Blast has multiple targets, it can no longer be Twinned. That’s because “to be eligible for Twinned Spell, a spell must be incapable of targeting more than one creature at the spell’s current level ” (emphasis mine, PHB 102, Errata 1 ).

Here are other rules regarding Eldritch Blast covered on Sage Advice:

Multiple Eldritch Blast attacks don’t happen simultaneously. Even though it’s an instantaneous spell, “you choose the targets and resolve the attacks consecutively, not all at once,” according to the Sage Advice Compendium .

Eldritch Blast can’t target objects. Because it affects life force or something. However, as Jeremy Crawford points out in this thread , DMs can do whatever they like.

Is Eldritch Blast 5e a Good Spell?

Yes, Eldritch Blast was undeniably the best damaging cantrip in the original source material for DnD 5e. For Warlocks with access to Invocations, that’s still arguably the case.

Here are the top reasons why Eldritch Blast is so good:

It’s a cantrip. Unlimited uses of a 120-foot range, 1d10 attack is incredibly powerful. Fire Bolt offers the same damage and range, but with fire damage, which many more enemies are resistant or immune to. The consistent damage of Eldritch Blast ensures that a Warlock will always deal the most damage in situations where spell slots are right.

It involves multiple discrete bolts. The difference in upcast between Fire Bolt and Eldritch Blast is where the big power difference starts to emerge. While Fire Bolt’s total damage remains on par with Eldritch Blast, you only make one attack — if it misses, you do no damage.

Plus, each strike of Eldritch Blast can be a critical strike, opening up even more damage potential. And while spreading damage isn’t usually optimal, the ability to push multiple foes into hazardous terrain or off a cliff is fantastic.

Almost nothing resists force damage. Force damage is one of the least common resistances and immunities in the game.

Only requires one hand. No one-handed martial weapons deal 1d10 or more damage, and the only ranged weapon that offers that great of damage is a cumbersome Heavy Crossbow.

Invocation potential. This is why Eldritch Blast is in a league of its own as far as cantrips go. Agonizing Blast, in particular, ensures steady damage by always adding your Charisma modifier to the spell’s damage. That damage gets tacked onto each and every beam, multiplying the Invocation’s effect each time the spell levels up.

Being able to push an enemy 10-40 feet away in one turn with Repelling Blast is also incredibly powerful and basically ensures that your target won’t be able to get involved in the fight. Lance of Lethargy offers a similar effect, and when stacked with Repelling Blast, you’re basically Spiderman webbing a foe to the nearest wall.

In short, Eldritch Blast is already a top-tier cantrip at level 1. Its ability to scale with levels and invocations means that it’s your go-to damaging ability throughout the game. Which is good, because Warlocks don’t have many spell slots to work on, meaning they’re the most cantrip-reliant spellcaster in DnD 5e.

Should I take eldritch blast as a hexblade? Yes, it’s still a good ranged option for a hexblade warlock. Even if you plan on mainly playing as a melee fighter , using a ranged weapon won’t be as strong as eldritch blast for those situations when you need to attack from range.

Can eldritch blast be twinned? Yes, until level 5, because it only targets one creature at low levels. After that, it is no longer eligible to be twinned, since the twinned spell metamagic is only eligible if “a spell [is] incapable of targeting more than one creature at the spell’s current level.”

Can eldritch blast hit two targets? Yes, once you’re character level 5, it can target multiple creatures, since you create two beams, and the spell states “you can direct the beams at the same target or at different ones.” This increases to three beams at 11th level and four beams at 17th level.

Does form of dread work with eldritch blast? Yes, the undead warlock feature works with any attack, but only once per turn.

Can you use sharpshooter on eldritch blast? No, sharpshooter only works with weapon attacks. But spell sniper can be used on eldritch blast, doubling its range to 240 feet and ignoring cover for spell attack rolls.

Ok… Let me correct myself, it is the best cantrip in all of 5e!

This cantrip is so great that most Warlocks use it as the foundation for their character builds a majority of the time. The Warlock class also becomes the ultimate ranged war machine with this versatile cantrip.

So the next time all the martial sniper types in the party say “we got this!” you tell them to hold your beer… or mead… same difference…

Welcome to this spell guide for Eldritch Blast in D&D 5e!

What is Eldritch Blast?

Eldritch blast is an amazing cantrip and the main reason many choose to roll up a Warlock for their next campaign.

It’s not uncommon for characters to multiclass and take at least one level in Warlock just for this. Let’s be real, if someone’s going to make a deal with some powerful being and possibly trade their soul for a cantrip, it has to be pretty special, eh?

Enhancing it with Eldritch Invocations, it becomes a versatile and reliable powerhouse that punches way above what other cantrips can even dream of doing.

As usual, we’ve provided the official spell description from the 5e Player’s Handbook below for reference and clarity.

What Does Eldritch Blast Do in D&D 5e?

Eldritch Blast is a cantrip from the School of Evocation.

This nasty little cantrip fits under the “ranged spell attack” category. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 force damage. Even beyond the damage die, this is excellent since force damage is incredibly reliable!

Not to be outdone, the range on this bad boy to start with is 120 feet, which is very impressive. However, the range can be increased as you level up and choose certain Eldritch Invocations. We’ll cover this later in the article so make sure to keep reading on.

As your character levels up, you can gain access to multiple beams. A 5th-level Warlock gets two Eldritch Blast beams, three beams at 11th level, and four beams once you reach level 17.

Multiple beams can target multiple enemies which lets you decide how you want to spread damage around. It’s especially great if you find yourself getting swarmed by a large amount of weaker enemies.

Just keep in mind that each beam requires a separate attack roll.

Of course, you can also choose to have more than one beam strike the same target. Nothing sends a message quite like four beams straight to the BBEG’s face!

Who Can Cast Eldritch Blast in D&D 5e?

As you may have already guessed from the paragraphs above, Eldritch Blast is a cantrip available to Warlocks and is not Patron-specific.

Others that potentially have access to Eldritch blast are characters who choose a feat like Magic Initiate or Spell Sniper and select the Warlock spell list.

Tips For Players Using Eldritch Blast in D&D 5e

Eldritch Blast is a fairly straightforward spell attack that’s bursting with damage-dealing awesomeness. However, there are still some finer points that you’ll want to be aware of to get the most out of this legendary cantrip.

Here are some useful tips for Warlocks to keep in mind if they choose Eldritch Blast as one of their cantrips. (And why wouldn’t they?!)

Mind Your Eldritch Invocation Choices

One of the special aspects that makes a Warlock a Warlock is their access to Eldritch Invocations.

Many of these Invocations “level up” the Eldritch Blast in some BIG ways. Remember when we mentioned many Warlocks base almost all their Warlock build on Eldritch Blast?

It’s typically worth picking up at least one Eldritch Invocation to buff your Eldritch Blast. This is the staple “bread and butter” spell of the Warlock class, so you’ll be using it A LOT on your adventures.

Agonizing Blast

So Eldritch Blast already does 1d10 Force damage. Imagine being able to add your Charisma modifier to that damage! Luckily, if you choose this Invocation, you won’t have to imagine doing some substantial extra damage.

As per the 5e DnD Player’s Handbook:

Prerequisite: eldritch blast cantrip When you cast eldritch blast, add your Charisma modifier to the damage it deals on a hit.

Charisma is already the most important ability score for Warlocks, so you should already have a nice modifier.

This means that even a low-level Warlock is potentially capable of doing an extra 4 to 5 points of damage depending on their Charisma score!

Eldritch Spear

Eldritch Blast normally has a range of 120 feet, which is quite impressive.

But what if I told you that that distance could be extended to a mindblowing 300 feet? The Eldritch Spear option does just that.

Prerequisite: eldritch blast cantrip When you cast eldritch blast, its range is 300 feet.

Eldritch Spear can also be accessed at an early level which really helps low-level Warlocks support the adventuring party in combat and ensures they avoid melee and even most ranged attacks.

Admittedly, situations where you’ll need 300 feet of range because 120 feet just isn’t enough tend to be rare. But when you want to ruin someone’s day from a football field away, this is exactly how you do it!

Grasp of Hadar

If you want to go full Scorpion from Mortal Kombat , this invocation is exactly how you tell enemies to “GET OVER HERE!”

As per Xanathar’s Guide to Everything:

Prerequisite: eldritch blast cantrip Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with your eldritch blast, you can move that creature in a straight line 10 feet closer to you.

This works similarly to Repelling Blast (which we’ll go over in just a moment). I have to admit, I love features and abilities like this that let me manipulate enemies’ movement.

Because you’re pulling an enemy 10 feet toward you, you can use this in all kinds of dastardly ways. You can pull them into AoE spell effects or environmental hazards like lava or send them down off of a cliff or into a deep pit full of spikes.

Of course, don’t underestimate the power of pulling an enemy spellcaster out from behind their allies and into the range of your own frontliners!

Lance of Lethargy

Whether you’re facing a particularly quick enemy, need to slow down something that’s chasing you, or otherwise, Lance of Lethargy is a fun option to consider.

Prerequisite: eldritch blast cantrip Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with your eldritch blast, you can reduce that creature’s speed by 10 feet until the end of you next turn.

There is no shortage of tactical options that come with being able to slow an enemy down. This is especially useful for keeping enemies trapped in AoE spell effects for longer.

Even better, many of these AoE effects also create difficult terrain which requires the enemy to spend more movement to escape. With 10 feet less movement available, they’ll be having a very bad time!

Repelling Blast

Watching your enemies take two steps forward and one step backward is great fun and also a great tactic. Repelling Blast allows for just that.

With every Eldritch Blast that strikes a target, your Warlock can move the target 10 feet away from you. You can push targets into hazards and even break grapples. All from a comfortable distance!

Prerequisite: eldritch blast cantrip When you hit a creature with eldritch blast, you can push the creature up to 10 feet away from you in a straight line.

Repelling Blast is also accessible at early levels and can be an effective part of your Warlocks tactics right out of the gate.

Whether you are delaying adversaries from engaging in melee, pushing melee combatants away from wounded companions, or pushing enemy spellcasters outside of their effective range, Repelling Blast can be a thorn in most enemies’ sides.

Not to mention, there’s a certain trolling potential here that I love. An enemy finally manages to get out of a nasty AoE spell effect (like Hunger of Hadar ) only for you to blast them right back into it!

Use the Long Distance Range to Your Advantage

Eldritch Blast has a great range and can be very effective at whittling down enemies from a distance. Whether those enemies be ranged combatants or melee combatants trying to enter the fray, they’ll have a hard time dealing with you.

Also, don’t forget those backline spellcasters working their magic on your party without a worry in the world.

Targeting enemies using concentration-based spells is a no-brainer here. Making those enemies lose their concentration on their biggest spells is a massively impactful way to turn the tides in combat!

With 120 feet of range (or more if you took Eldritch Spear), there’s virtually no target you can’t blast into bits. Just be mindful of your positioning in combat and you can potentially stay almost uncontested in most fights!

Of course, the other huge upside of having so much distance is avoiding most incoming damage altogether.

Lean On the Synergy With the Warlock’s Hex

Another great and iconic Warlock spell that works nicely with Eldritch Blast is Hex.

Hex deals an additional 1d6 Necrotic damage per attack that hits. Not bad! Plus, if you also have Agonizing Blast, the amount of damage your Warlock will be dishing out is substantial, to say the least!

With a range of 90 feet, you shouldn’t have too much difficulty getting Hex on a target. From there, focus them down with a barrage of Eldritch Blasts!

Just make sure to keep a bonus action handy for when they drop to 0 hit points. You’ll want that so that you can move your Hex onto the next target that you want to suffer your wrath!

Eldritch Blast – DM Tips

Many of the NPCs that have access to Eldritch Blast don’t usually benefit from the added Eldritch Invocations. However, it’s still a great spell and as a DM you’ll love its simplicity.

As we know Eldritch Blast deals a good chunk of damage, doesn’t use spell slots, and has a fantastic range. Having an NPC Warlock stand back and blast the party works great. Just be sure to prioritize any PCs using concentration-based spells as well.

A key element that makes Eldritch Blast so handy is its mix of power and range, so any NPC that’s casting it would be using that advantage to pick off high-threat PCs.

NPC Warlocks often have access to Hex as well, so be sure to use the two spells in tandem against the PCs.

Treat NPC Warlocks with Eldritch Blast as a PC would: fight fire with fire.

Is Eldritch Blast a Good Spell in D&D 5e?

Eldritch Blast isn’t just a good spell: it’s phenomenal!

It becomes even more incredible once you factor in the Eldritch Invocations available to enhance this spell. Of course, the fact that you’re getting all of this in a cantrip just makes the spell that much better.

The range of 120 feet is fantastic, though increasing the range to 300 feet with Eldritch Spear makes it epically ridiculous. On a large enough battlefield, your PC can avoid almost all harm even from other spellcasters.

The damage is on par if not a bit better than most martial ranged attacks such as bows. With the Agonizing Blast Invocation, it more than holds its own.

Some will say the fact that it requires a roll to hit might not make it as effective as Magic Missile at lower levels when it comes to damaging opponents, but I feel that’s quite a contrarian take. Attack rolls allow for the ever-present chance of scoring some critical hits and on average it does more damage than Magic Missile.

Not to mention: as a cantrip, it’s not costing you your valuable spell slots!

Eldritch Blast is a seriously versatile and powerful ranged spell attack with a huge range that never runs out of ammo and increases in power over the course of your character’s career.

I don’t know if it’s possible to “oversell” how awesome this is. I mean, there’s a reason it’s so iconic!

Does Eldritch Blast with Repelling Blast Create Opportunity Attacks?

No. Forced movement does not count for triggering an Opportunity Attack . Unless a spell causes a creature to use its action, movement, or reaction to move, you can’t make an attack of opportunity.

Can Repelling Blast Break a Grapple?

Yes. In fact, Repelling Blast is especially useful when trying to break a grapple.

Can Repelling Blast Push a Creature Off a Cliff?

Yes , as long as they are within range of being pushed off. It also works if you want to push someone into a pit, fire, river, vat of boiling hot chocolate, etc.

Does Repelling Blast Have a Size Limit?

No. Repelling Blast works on any sized creature. Have fun yeet-ing Frost Giants !

Do Eldritch Blast-Related Eldritch Invocations Work on Every Blast?

Mostly Yes. Every blast can have Agonizing Blast, Repelling Blast, and Eldritch Spear applied to it.

However, some Invocations (such as Grasp of Hadar and Lance of Lethargy) can only be used once on your turn when you hit a target with your Eldritch Blast.

Does Hex Work with Eldritch Blast?

Yes. Every time you hit a creature with an Eldritch Blast you can add your Hex damage. For example, if you Hex an orc and hit them with two blasts, you would then apply the Hex damage to each hit.

Eldritch Blast is why many decide to try playing a Warlock or continue to play them.

It’s a perfect example of not only a great and effective cantrip but also a great influential spell that can shape your entire character build. Eldritch Blast adds a ton of versatility to a Warlock and is something the entire party will love.

It also scales nicely which is a great feeling. It’s hard not to love a cantrip that deals decent damage at 1st level all the way through 20th.

Oh, yes, a cantrip that I take on every Warlock and on some other casters if I can. The part about adding Agonizing Blast bonus to every ray is often ignored – but it shouldn’t be, as it boosts already impressive potential to extreme levels. But what is even more impressive – you may do it from Level 2, while other classes need either a feat or Level 8 (some Clerics). It is also interesting that Eldritch Blast is basically description-neutral – just an energy beam with force damage. So, a player may describe it in any way possible; for example, my Archfey Warlock sends bolts of solidified winter power, my Celestial one hurls darts of blinding light and so on. And that actually helps to mask that you’re Warlock in-character. One thing that is also often ignored or overlooked, though: Eldritch Blast works only on creatures. No blasting obstacles with it, sadly (except a mimic check).

And, as I wrote about multiclasses recently… A few levels of a Sorcerer will give an ability to twin Hex. So, Hex two targets and hit both of them with beams of Eldritch Blast. It is especially sinister in the hands of an NPC villain. Another scene, though hilarious, is that the party or enemies may have several Warlocks or members with feats. Imagine them taking Repelling Blasts/Grasp of Hadar and playing field tennis with the targets.

I can’t imagine playing a Warlock and not taking Eldritch Blast with the Agonizing Blast option. It’s just too good to pass up!

Also, you make an excellent point regarding the description of the spell. Where some might see it as a “generic” description, the potential to describe it and add flavor in a way that fits the Warlock’s patron (or some other aspect of the character) is wonderful.

It’s terrifying what can happen as a multiclass Warlock/Sorcerer. Twinned Hex is definitely something that will make any Dungeon Master start to sweat and feels almost unfair to use against the party! 😉

I hadn’t considered Warlocks playing tennis with targets, but the mental image is hilarious. They keep pushing and pulling an enemy through a “net” that just happens to be a Wall of Fire. Haha!

Thank you, now I just must put such a scene if I ever run an adventure dealing with fiends and their servants. Perhaps, two Warlocks may even invite the characters to join! On a semi-related note: imagine my surprise when just the basic Monster Manual presented me a creature of CR 4 that is outright immune to force damage. I think, Helmed Horrors are really horrors of Warlock and Amethyst lineages.

Helmed Horrors are a very underused monster. I’m excited to write an article about them, though there are a few other monsters I’m wanting to feature first.

I remember the first time I threw one at one of my groups.

The Rogue went first, but couldn’t beat the HH’s armor class. Next was the Warlock’s turn who rolled a critical hit with her Eldritch Blast.

Everyone cheered until they realized that it had no effect. The table got very quiet and one of the players asked the group “should we run?”

They ultimately prevailed, but they were terrified the whole time!

I am testing various things right now, one of them is a conversion of Council of Wyrms. So, a party of four wyrmlings and an Elf ally recently met two Helmed Horrors. ..well. The Artificer was extremely surprised that his cannon is not working. The Wizard was equally surprised that her favourite Chromatic Orb has no effect. The Ranger just was annoyed that he failed to hit them. The Paladin was very sorry for not using Smites right away.

The 2024 NFL Draft has now concluded, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs had three players drafted. Decamerion Richardson (Raiders), Jaden Crumedy (Panthers), and Nathaniel “Bookie” Watson (Browns) will now join the Bulldog fraternity in the NFL. 

However, there are still some quality MSU players who went undrafted. Lideatrick Griffin is a receiver who went undrafted, and the Philadelphia, Mississippi native could be a real difference maker as a kick return in the NFL. 

Griffin was a first-team All-American return specialist in 2022. Jett Johnson is another All-SEC performer who went undrafted. 

The Tupelo native led the SEC in tackles in 2022 with 115 and finished second behind Watson in 2023 with 130 tackles. Nathan Pickering went undrafted, and the former 4-star recruit has plenty of talent but never hit his full potential in Starkville. 

The Mount Olive native made 30 career starts and racked up 124 career tackles and 30 for loss. Shawn Preston Jr. went undrafted and, like Pickering, played a lot of snaps for the Bulldogs. 

The St. James, Louisiana native made 26 career starts and racked up 206 career tackles. Preston was also selected to the 2023 Phil Steele All-SEC Fourth Team. Marcus Banks transferred to Mississippi State from Alabama in 2022 and made a dozen starts for the Bulldogs.

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

Biden says he'll debate Trump, opens up about loss of first wife and daughter in interview with Howard Stern

President Joe Biden sat down for a  surprise live interview  in New York with iconic radio host Howard Stern on SiriusXM on Friday. The discussion was announced just minutes before the two went on the air.

"I think I should leave now," Biden joked as Stern, who as recently as this week expressed his fondness for the incumbent Democrat on his radio program, introduced him to the audience by singing his praises and expressing how much he wanted to meet him.

Friday's sitdown marks Stern's first interview with a sitting president.

"Look at me, sitting with the president," Stern said at the end of the interview, to which Biden quipped back: "Look at me, sitting with Howard Stern."

The longtime radio host -- and one-time New York libertarian gubernatorial candidate -- interviewed Donald Trump numerous times through the years before he became president, and sat down with 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for an extensive interview in 2019 . (Stern told late night host Stephen Colbert in 2019 he believes if Clinton had sat for an interview ahead of the election, it might have "made a difference" in her presidential campaign.)

The wide-ranging interview -- which lasted over an hour -- touched on a number of topics, from Biden's feelings of grief after the death of his first wife and infant daughter in a car accident, to pledging to debate former President Donald Trump, his likely opponent in November. 

"I don’t know when, but   I am happy to debate him," Biden told the radio host.

Biden was also questioned about his favorite predecessors -- Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and, of course, his old boss, Barack Obama, who he said was "a hell of a president" -- overcoming his stutter and how he met his second wife, first lady Jill Biden.

Biden opens up about mental health, thoughts of suicide after loss of his first wife and infant daughter

President Biden spoke candidly about mental health when Stern asked him about the loss of his first wife, Neilia, and infant daughter, Naomi, in a 1972 car crash that left his two sons -- Beau and Hunter -- critically injured.

Stern, who has three daughters, grew emotional at points during the interview when talking about the incident.

"It was a great romance," he said to the president. "And you had three children. You had a daughter and two sons, and you had a young family, you had just been elected to the United States Senate, and the worst thing ever happens in your life. It's a horrible tragedy. Your wife was in a car accident, some truck hit her, and you lost your 13 month old daughter. And I get the chills when I say it because I can't imagine this kind of loss. You lose your 13 month old daughter, you lose your wife and your two boys end up in the hospital. I can't even imagine that kind of loss."

Biden said he struggled in the aftermath of the incident, which came just a few weeks after he was first elected to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate.

"I didn't want to stay in the U.S. Senate, and I let everybody know," Biden said. "We had a Democratic governor, and he'd appointe a successor, another Democrat."

But he met resistance from some of the powerhouses of the U.S. Senate at the time -- namely then-Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield, Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy and a handful of others -- who convinced him to stay.

"Sen. Mansfield, 'Iron Mike' from Montana, a man with more integrity in his little finger that most people have in their whole body, and Teddy Kennedy and [South Carolina Sen.] Fritz Hollings ... and a few others, they all came to me and said 'look, just stay six months, help us organize,'" he recalled. "Like a damn fool, I said, I said 'okay, but I'm not going to stay.' And I started commuting back and forth to the train and two or 300 miles round trip a day."

Later in the interview, Stern brought up Biden's loss again, leading to a candid discussion about mental health and suicidal thoughts.

"You describe you were suicidal at that point," Stern said. "You thought about it?"

"I don't drink," Biden replied. "That's not a virtue, I never drank And I used to sit there and think to myself, 'I'm just gonna pick out a bottle of scotch ... and I was going to just drink it and get drunk, and I could never bring myself to do it."

"And I actually thought about, you know -- you don't have to be crazy to commit suicide," he continued. "If you've been at the top of the mountain, you think it's never gonna be there. And there was a brief moment, I thought maybe I just go to the Delaware Memorial Bridge and jump. But I had two kids. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't like, 'I've got to commit -- It was like, you've been to the top of the mountain, and it's never gonna happen again. You're never gonna be okay. But I had my boys."

When asked if he considered therapy, Biden said he didn't, emphasizing the support of his family -- but encouraged others to seek mental help.

"I strongly, strongly, strongly encourage people to go to therapy," Biden said. "I strongly urge people to deal with mental illness. It's just like you breaking a bone in your body, but I guess because I had such an internal support ... I never considered it, but I wish I had. I remember when the boys were hospitalized, Hunter had a fractured skull from the accident and Beau broke literally every bone in his body, he was in a body cast both arms, both legs for a long time."

Biden recalled that Ted Kennedy sent a child therapst from University of Massachusetts to help his children recover from the accident, which he said was "wonderful," but he never sought therapy because of his family's support.

"I encourage people to get therapy, I hope they don't read from this and they shouldn't get a therapist," Biden said. "I think it's really important. Mental illnesses should not be viewed as anything different than a physical illness, and it should be just treated. And there's real serious people and experts who can help."

Biden: 'I'm happy to debate' Trump

When asked by Stern if he'll debate Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Biden said he's planning on it.

"I am somewhere," Biden said. "I don't know when. I'm happy to debate him."

The comment marks the first time the incumbent president has committed to debate his 2020 election opponent. The statement comes after several news outlets, including ABC News, NBC News, CNN, C-SPAN, The Associated Press and NPR, sent the two candidates a letter urging them to debate. 

"Ok let’s set it up !” Trump campaign manager Chris LaCivita said on social media in response.

In a post on his Truth Social platform after the interview , Trump accused Biden of being facetious, writing: "Everyone knows he doesn't really mean it, but in case he does, I say, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, an old expression used by Fighters."

"I suggest Monday Evening, Tuesday Evening, or Wednesday Evening at my Rally in Michigan," Trump said, before baselessly accusing Biden's policies on electric vehicles of "destroying" the Wolverine State.

"In the alternative, he's in New York City today, although probably doesn't know it, and so am I, stuck in one of the many Court cases that he instigated," Trump continued, accusing Biden of instigating the hush money trial against him. (There is no evidence Biden interfered in the case, and the president does not have jurisdiction over a state-level prosecution.)

"In fact, let's do the Debate at the Courthouse tonight - on National Television, I'll wait around!" he challenged.

Trump did not participate in a single Republican National Committee-sanctioned debate for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. In 2020, he pulled out of a planned debate with Biden.

Stern offered Biden a strategy for a potential debate.

"This is how I would handle it. Tell me if I'm nuts -- well I am nuts -- but tell me if this is accurate: I would stand there on stage with Trump and I would repeat over and over again, 'excuse me, please find me 11,000 votes so that I can win the election?'" Stern said, referencing the now-infamous phone call the Republican president placed to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger after the election. "I would just repeat that over and over again. And I'd say to the audience, 'what are we debating?'"

The conversation then turned to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Biden accused Trump of "sitting in that office off the dining area of the Oval Office for three hours and [saying] nothing."

"It was derelict, it was almost criminal. He did nothing. He just sat there and watched what was happening," Biden charged of Trump before condemning his once-and-likely-future opponent's pledges to pardon those who stomed the Capitol . 

Stern asked Biden if any of the Republican members of Congress he served with expressed outrage about Trump.

"I'd never say the names I never will, the last few years have had seven sitting Republican senators -- two are gone now -- seven sitting Republican friends call me and tell me, 'Joe, I agree with you, but I just can't -- he'll get me.'"

"They're not saying they're gonna vote for me, they're saying 'I agree with you,'" he added.

Airline fees

Stern opened the interview in a somewhat unusual fashion, praising the president for a specific piece of policy: A new Transportation Department rule issued earlier this week  entitling passengers on significantly delayed flights to receive automatic cash refunds and mandating that airlines be more transparent about fees for bags, select seats and other amenities before a ticket is booked.

"He did something so great, and I don't know how many people are aware of it: But you've got this thing with the airline passed that now when an airline for some reason screws you up and doesn't let you, you know -- when you can't make the flight, they used to give you a credit. But now they are forced to refund you. And like, I think that's a huge deal."

The action is part of Biden's push to cut so-called "junk fees" -- hidden costs on everything from concert tickets to online food delivery -- as a way to lower costs for Americans.

"There's a lot of those, Howard," Biden said. "The fact is that when you're raised in a middle-class family, all this stuff matters to you. It matters, those items that they say, 'well, it's only costs this, it only costs that,' it matters."

"There's a lot of junk fees too," he continued. "Like for example, banks can charge $35 for overdrafts any more, it'll cost you three or eight dollars. A whole range of things that matter."

As he often does, Biden launched into an anecdote about his father to underscore his point: "My dad used to say, 'At the end of the month, how much you got left?'"

Supreme Court and abortion

Biden's interview with Stern came one day after the Supreme Court heard arguments about Trump's claim of absolute immunity in the federal election subversion case against him. 

Stern pressed Biden about the Supreme Court, to which the president replied: "I got to be careful what I say about the court."

"Why do you have to be careful?" the host asked, before referencing Senate Republicans' successful effort to scuttle President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia in 2016, which led to Trump's ideological reshaping of the high court. "This keeps me up at night, I'm not exaggerating."

"It's a really extremely conservative court," Biden said. "Maybe the most conservative court in modern history."

Biden then steered the conversation toward abortion, pledging that if reelected and given a Democratic Congress, they will restore Roe v. Wade.

"When they struck down Roe v Wade, saying that it was not constitutionally -- federal constitutionally guaranteed, it was a state issue, states can make those judgments ... one of the justices, Clarence Thomas, said it's not that women don't have a choice, they can in fact change it ... at a state level, we'll see if they have the power."

"Well, they ain't seen nothing yet, they're gonna see what will happen," Biden continued, adding: "If I'm elected President again to a second term, we're going to be able to ... make Roe v. Wade the law of the land again."

"I think there's going to be a real lesson learned on the MAGA Republican side of the aisle, because we're going to see a whole hell of a lot of state referenda, and they're going to see they're gonna want to restore it, and that's going to be able to be done."

Sit-down with Stern comes after report about tensions over interviews with 'traditional' news outlets

The interview comes one day after a  report from POLITICO  was published about tension between Biden's White House and The New York Times stemming from Biden's refusal to sit with the paper of record for an interview. The Times pushed back on the report , but condemned the president for not sitting for interviews with traditional media outlets, calling it "troubling that President Biden has so actively and effectively avoided questions from independent journalists during his term."

"It is true that The Times has sought an on-the-record interview with Mr. Biden, as it has done with all presidents going back more than a century," the New York Times said in a statement . "If the president chooses not to sit down with The Times because he dislikes our independent coverage, that is his right, and we will continue to cover him fully and fairly either way."

However, in meetings with Vice President Harris and other administration officials, the publisher of The Times focused instead on a higher principle: That systematically avoiding interviews and questions from major news organizations doesn’t just undermine an important norm, it also establishes a dangerous precedent that future presidents can use to avoid scrutiny and accountability," the statement continues. "That is why [NYT publisher A.G.] Sulzberger has repeatedly urged the White House to have the president sit down with The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNN and other major independent news organizations that millions of Americans rely on to understand their government."

Biden didn't address The New York Times controversy specifically, but he did accuse news outlets of not "speaking up" against Trump like they did previously.

"I'm not blaming the press, I'm just saying I think some of them are worried about attacking him, worried about taking him on," Biden told Stern.

This package includes three nights lodging for one or two clients, so grab a buddy and let our knowledgeable guides help plan a memorable trip on the best water in the West.

Why Wyoming?

Wyoming is divided by two major flyways: the Pacific and the Central, and provides an important habitat for breeding and migrating waterfowl throughout the state’s grasslands and riparian corridors. Within Pinedale and Sublette County specifically, the New Fork River and Green River watersheds provide plenty of migrating and resident waterfowl for avid hunters. Pinedale is home to the largest mountain range in the state; the Wind River Range offers a compelling backdrop for any outdoor adventure, and is home to a vast array of wildlife. Renowned as one of the last truly wild frontiers in the states, there is no doubt that this area is an adventurer’s paradise. From glaciers to Golden trout, or moose to mallards, Wyoming has it all. So the question really isn’t “Why Wyoming?” The question you must ask yourself is, “Why NOT Wyoming?”

The Birds and the…Trout

A wide variety of waterfowl and other animals stake their clam in the vast area surrounding Pinedale. Cast and Blast clients can expect to see many species of birds during their outing, including teal, mallards, widgeon, gadwall, a variety of diving ducks, geese, swans, and grouse to name a few. The blue ribbon New Fork and Green Rivers host rainbow, brook, brown and cutthroat trout, all of which thrive on the cold water temperatures these glacial-fed waterways provide. Many other animals, such as moose, bears, wolves, mountain lions, deer, elk, antelope, and predatory birds such as eagles and ospreys abound, so our clients are often treated to as much wildlife viewing as actual hunting and fishing over the course of a day.

Wyoming’s Cast and Blast season runs from September 23rd through November. Clients need a Wyoming state fishing license, Conservation stamp, HIP stamp, Migratory Game Bird license, and a Federal Duck stamp. Federal Duck stamps can be purchased at your local post office. Hunters are also required to have a valid, current Hunter Safety certificate to participate. Come prepared with warm clothes and waders-the weather fluctuates rapidly and without warning in the mountain-west. Plan on cold mornings, but warm autumn sunshine, rain, sleet, snow, and hail are all possible within a single day, and these weather changes can be hazardous if not properly prepared for. Wyoming weather is frequently variable-trips will not be cancelled, nor postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

What’s included in a Cast and Blast trip?

Our guides are knowledgeable, experienced, and certified in Wilderness First Aid, including CPR, and are equipped with a First-Aid kit. Each are experienced fishing and hunting guides. Years of local scouting, waterfowl hunting and trout guiding come together for our Cast and Blast trips, and when combined with the best use of decoys and calling methods, your outing is sure to be memorable. Knowledgeable guides take care of the decoys, brush for the blind, bird identification and calling the birds into shooting range. Your canine guides will retrieve your downed birds before they float downriver. Light breakfasts, lunch and beverages (including coffee) are provided. For the fishing side of things, all flies for the day are provided by the guide. Rental rods and other equipment are available if needed- contact us to make a reservation.

I am a novice hunter. Is this trip for me?

For the safety of all participants, our hunting trips are for experienced hunters only. Waterfowl hunting from a blind can be very fast paced and is not an appropriate setting for a novice shooter to learn safe gun handling.

What is your cancellation policy for Cast and Blast trips?

A 50% deposit is required to secure a reservation within 7 days of booking your trip. In case of a cancellation, the deposit is fully refundable less a $100 processing fee if the written cancellation request is received prior to 90 days of the trip date. For cancellations within 90-60 days of arrival, the deposit is non-refundable. Requests to move an already scheduled trip date will be treated as a cancellation and a new booking. The balance of the trip is due within 60 days of the trip. If a cancellation must be made within 60 days of arrival no refund will be issued. Due to the nature of permitting required for our advanced bookings, we can not make exceptions to our cancellation policy. Wyoming weather is often variable-trips will not be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. If you are at all concerned with the cancellation possibility, we strongly encourage you to purchase trip insurance. Unexpected events do arise and travel insurance is very reasonable. There are many good travel insurance providers, but we recommend  Travelguard  as a good option.  You can either complete the online quote on their website or call one of their agents.

7 Best Cast and Blast Combo Hunts in North America

Unless you happen to be one of those fortunate souls with an unlimited travel budget and plenty of free time you must be judicious when scheduling your outdoor adventures.

For most of us there simply aren't enough vacation days in the till to cover both an annual hunting and fishing trip, but don't let that discourage you. With a little pre-planning you can find a combo trip that will allow you to pack both your reel and your rifle.

Combo hunts are a great investment of both time and money. I've found that fishing typically enhances a hunt and vice versa, and there's even a bit of built-in insurance. If the weather is ruining your hunt you may be able to find success on the water. Cast and blast trips are a great way to spend those vacation days, and here are seven of your best bets.

Island of the Bears Ultimate Combo

Kodiak Island might be known for big bears, but it's also home to some of the best cast-and-blast combo hunting anywhere in the country. In August and September you can divide your time chasing the island's elusive blacktail deer and fishing for lingcod, halibut, rockfish, king and silver salmon in the Pacific Ocean (and, incidentally, these months also happen to be prime time for really big halibut, one of the most delicious gamefish found anywhere).

If you're willing to come in October you'll have a chance to hunt waterfowl, too, and this is a great trip for the duck hunter who is looking for northern species like scoters, harlequins and eiders. If you've always wanted to hunt the Great North but don't have a great deal of time or money then this is the trip for you.

Wyoming Wilderness Combo

Autumn is a wonderful time to be in the Wyoming wilderness, and if you've always dreamed of a high country elk or mule deer hunt this is one of the best destinations in the west. A pack trip into the wilderness is an adventure itself, but be sure to take a fly rod along with your rifle.

That way when you have down time or after you take your bull or buck you can catch enough trout in the surrounding streams and alpine lakes to create a fine wilderness feast.

Boundary Waters Grouse and Walleye

Northern Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a vast playground of hidden waters tucked within the Superior National Forest. You can spend the morning canoeing from one fishing hole to the next nabbing pike, walleye, and smallmouth bass, and the surrounding forest areas are home to some of the nation's highest densities of grouse.

Fall hunts are breathtaking as the leaves change, cool weather has oftentimes killed the mosquitoes and it isn't hard to find your own little corner of this massive wilderness.

Doubling Up in Hell's Canyon

America's deepest river gorge, the aptly-named Hell's canyon is home to some outstanding hunting opportunities. There are sheep tags for the lucky few, mule deer, black bear and elk, lots of wild chukar for the adventure-minded bird hunter and the fishing for trout, salmon and smallmouth in the river is excellent.

There's also a chance you'll tie onto a massive sturgeon, a prehistoric fish that grows to immense size in the waters of the Snake.

Alabama's Black Belt Bucks and Bass

Alabama's Black Belt region is one of the most underrated hunting destination s in the eastern United States. This rural portion of the state produces some great whitetail bucks, the season is long and nonresident tags are affordable.

In addition, Alabama lakes have a long growing season and you'll have a chance to do some great bass fishing as well. This is an affordable DIY hunt if that's what you're looking for, but you can make the most of a short trip by hiring a guide. Alabamablackbeltadventures.org has an organized list of guides and outfitters in the region so you won't have to do so much homework.

Land Between the Lakes Toms and Slabs

The Land Between the Lakes is a strip of land that separates Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. The surrounding hills and old-growth hardwood forests are perfect habitat for wild turkeys and there are plenty of birds here.

The area has a quota system so you'll have to apply early, but the vast wilderness areas offer plenty opportunity for you to get on a good bird and tag out. Afterwards, you're just a short drive from some of the best bass and crappie fishing that you'll find in the region. Be sure to bring along your breadcrumbs and oil for a fish fry at the conclusion of this combo trip.

December Ducks and Redfish

Matagorda Island attracts tens of thousands of ducks and you won't have trouble limiting out on redheads, pintails, and gadwall. Afterwards, break for lunch and then head out into Matagorda Bay in search of redfish.

The weather in Texas is usually mild that time of year and your odds of success are high. Just be sure to bring an extra-large cooler; you're going to be bringing home a lot of great meat.

Part 1: Bears of the North - The Journey

Travel along with Joe Ferronato to Alaska's remote Tundra to hunt grizzly bears with Leupold's Shawn Skipper and Browning's Rafe Nielsen. Experience the journey from Oregon to Alaska, the plane ride into the Tundra, setting up camp, and the first sightings of bears. The group's goal? How to Pull Off an Awesome Cast and Blast Trip

This world has a lot to offer when it comes to opportunities in the outdoors, and most outdoorsmen want to experience it all. Big game hunting, wingshooting, freshwater fishing, deep sea fishing —no matter what you love to do, there's a lot to choose from. One great way to knock more experiences off your bucket list is to go on a combination hunting and fishing trip or a "Cast and Blast" trip as we've come to refer to it as. If you're looking for fun and nonstop action, these can't be beat. Cast and blast trips are amazing, but they do require some planning to get them right. Here are some tips on how to pull off an awesome cast and blast trip.

Understand Seasonal Timing

Almost every game animal has a season, and almost every game fish has an appropriate time of year to catch and keep. Make sure that your chosen fish and game species align seasonally. You can't plan a waterfowl trip with a stellar summer fishing trip—they simply don't occur at the same time. This takes a little research, especially if you have never hunted or fished a particular area. Start by picking the fish and game species you want to pursue and start thumbing through the "when" and "where" information provided by the state or region's local wildlife agency. You have to establish the possibility of a cast and blast trip before you bring it to fruition. And of course, you'll need to ensure that you have all the correct licenses and tags before you head out.

Go for an Extended Trip

I can't stress this point enough: When planning your trip, provide yourself enough time to do everything. It's important to provide yourself enough time because you can't predict everything; terrible weather , car trouble, poor animal movement, or a bad fish bite can ruin an otherwise great trip. Having ample time on your trip allows more room for error, and if everything does go right, it just leaves you with more time to enjoy yourself.

Plan Out Your Days Ahead

Bad day-by-day planning often means not getting to experience everything you traveled for. It's a good idea to build yourself an itinerary before you head out on your trip. The last thing you want to do is go on your trip and not have enough time to do everything you wanted to. When planning out your days make sure everything is appropriately placed for optimal bite or bird movement. Make sure that your plan has a little bit of flexibility built in, because weather or any other unforeseen events can affect your plan.

Pack Gear Efficiently and Appropriately

Sorting and packing your gear is an integral part of a successful trip. Utilize a packing checklist to ensure that you don't forget anything. The last thing you want to do is arrive at your location and realize you forgot your tackle box or your waders. When packing your gear into your vehicle, be mindful of placement. Don't store your fishing rods under a pile of heavy, rigid gear; that's a good way to break an eye or rod tip. Use plenty of cushion and appropriate gear spacing if you can.

Take as Many Pictures as You Can

One thing more hunters and anglers should do is to take more pictures. These trips are memories and often once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, so you should document them with harvest pictures and candid pictures. Your camera setup doesn't matter—a polaroid or smart phone can capture a memory just as well an expensive DSLR camera can. Take the time, take the pictures, and remember the trip for a lifetime.

Suggestions for a Stellar Cast and Blast Trip

Cast and blast trips are incredibly fun. There are endless options for trip ideas, but here are a few to get you started.

• Southern Largemouth Bass and Dove: The south is full of states with stellar bass fishing . The south is also full of high density populations of doves. Mix them together. Dove season usually starts in September. It just so happens that this is usually when the water temperature drops and the bass are more active again. Check out states like Florida, Alabama, Texas, and Georgia for this option.
• Western Trout and Upland Bird: The west represents every outdoorsman's dream. There is a ton to do out west and a popular cast and blast trip combines trout fishing and upland bird hunting. High quality trout streams litter the western landscape, and there is no shortage of upland bird populations like pheasant and grouse nearby. Check out Wyoming, Montana, or Colorado for a quality combination trip.
• Canadian Walleye and Waterfowl: Fishing in Canada is unparalleled. Trophy walleye and northern pike are plentiful and there is no shortage of destination lakes to fish. Also, waterfowling in Canada is premier. Aside from the flooded green timber of Arkansas, dry field hunting in Southern Canada is the most recognizable waterfowl hunting out there. September screams trophy walleye and filled duck and goose limits. Put a Canadian cast and blast trip on your bucket list. You won't regret it.

5 Fall Cast and Blasts Adventures

Autumn isn’t just about deer hunting. Skip a day in the treestand for these fishing and hunting trips

Imagine your ideal Saturday. Mine would include a little fishing and a little hunting. Those two activities have been linked as my collective passion since, well, forever. If we’re on the same page, then a cast and blast close to home or as a trip will be right up your alley.

You don’t always have to travel far to find cast and blast opportunities. From Alabama bass and rabbits to Michigan grouse and walleye, fall fishing and hunting adventures abound across the country. For me, it was a recent panfish on the fly and squirrel-hunting trip. It’s a sentimental duo because my earliest hunting memories are of squirrel hunting with my dad, and the first fish I caught on a fly rod was a bluegill.

The following cast and blast adventures may be close to home for you or far away. Either way, they’re all worth checking out this fall.

1. Snake River Mixed Bag Adventure

Where: Riggins, Idaho

When: September through January

Cast: Smallmouth bass, sturgeon, salmon, steelhead

Blast: Chukar

If you’re interested in a western adventure that includes catching loads of fish and hunting chukar over a pointer, then pack your bags for a float down the Snake or Salmon river in Idaho. Fred Taylor of Mountain River Outfitters runs a four-day float down the Snake River and a one-day float on the Salmon.

Great fishing and action-packed bird hunting aren’t the only draws. The natural beauty of the area is worth the trip. “It’s a desert in the mountains, and it’s rugged and beautiful kind of country. The canyon walls shoot 5,000 feet high,” says Taylor.

On the Snake, you can fish for smallmouth bass, salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon. But, the smallmouth fishing is nonstop action. “It’s not uncommon to catch 150 to 200 bass a day,” says Taylor.

After a morning of smallie action, you can rest your arms and exercise your legs hiking in Hell’s Canyon as you listen for chukar and watch German shorthaired pointers get to work. Chukar have a distinct chirp that allows hunters to home in on their location, but you still have to get to them. With burning lungs and legs, you’ll quickly learn why this area is called Hell’s Canyon. The terrain dishes out humility and the quick-flying chukars give out a second helping.

‘“After the hunt, we’ll stop at a few fishing holes and try to catch a few sturgeon,” says Taylor.

White sturgeon are the largest freshwater fish in North America. Their life span is over 100 years and in that time they’ll reach close to 12 feet and 400 pounds. Hell’s Canyon is a catch-and-release fishery, so there’s an abundance of large sturgeon. To catch them, you’ll drop chunks of bait on heavy conventional gear into the deep holes these fish call home.

That long day is capped off with a hot Dutch-oven meal and a good night’s sleep in a wall tent. The best time for the Snake River adventure is the third Saturday in September through the first week of October. There is, however, another cast and blast option on the Salmon River from October through January.

“We do a one-day cast and blast on the Salmon River out of Riggins,” says Taylor, “We’ll be steelhead fishing from drift boats, and we’ll be hunting chukar.”

2. The Florida Experience

Where: Miami, Florida

When: September and October

Cast: A mixed bag of saltwater fish and peacock bass

Blast: Alligators and hogs

Florida is a unique place, and it offers cast and blast opportunities no other state can. Imagine catching giant tarpon one day and then hunting alligators the next. September and October are all about the mullet run. Miami-based fishing guide Kevin Hughes of South Florida Uncharted looks forward to this each year.

“The mullet run brings in some serious seasonal action. All that bait makes the fish much more aggressive,” says Hughes. “Fish that typically won’t go after an artificial will suddenly blow up on a topwater or hammer a swimbait right at the boat.”

You’ll catch a variety of species during the mullet run, including some surprises.

“There’s always tarpon and always snook, but the numbers that are here during the mullet run are just ridiculous. It brings kingfish, Mahi, and tuna a lot closer to shore,” Huges says. “Every year I’m always surprised by a nice keeper black grouper up on the surface on a live mullet, which is something you wouldn’t expect to happen.”

If you don’t time the mullet run just right, or the wind is kicking, you can head inland for peacock bass. You can catch them in canals, swamps, and even from storm drains as they feed aggressively before winter.

“They tend to put the feed bag on and become hyper-aggressive because they know it’s going to get cold. So it’s a really fun time of year to fish for them,” says Hughes.

After you’ve gotten your fill of those tackle thrashing exotics, you can move on to hunting the native alligator, and what’s more Florida than that?

To hunt Alligators in Florida, you can enter the limited draw where 10,000 applicants apply for the 6,000 available permits annually. The odds aren’t bad, but if you don’t draw a tag you still have options. You can still hunt alligators as long as you’re with a guide that is a license alligator trapper. Either way, you’ll want a guide for gators, and there are many options throughout Florida.

“It’s our only ‘dangerous game’ here in Florida, and there’s no better rush than having a big angry bull alligator a few feet away from you biting anything in its way,” says local alligator hunter, Alex Gonzales.

If gators aren’t your thing, wild hogs are an abundant and destructive invasive species found throughout Florida. Despite their numbers, they are challenging to hunt because they’re most active at night.

3. North Carolina Rails and Reds

Where: Cape Fear, North Carolina

Cast: Redfish

Blast: Virginia and clapper rails

Your eyes scan for movement as your guide poles the skiff through a North Carolina marsh. You throw your 20 gauge to your shoulder and squeeze off a shot at a flushing rail. Then you set down the scattergun and pick up an eight weight as your attention turns toward tailing reds.

If that doesn’t sound like fun, then you should take up golf.

The destination is Cape Fear near Wilmington, North Carolina, and this cast and blast is about timing the tide.

“You’re waiting for the huge flood tides we get on the new and full moons. When all the water comes in, it pushes the birds into the thickest grass and concentrates them,” says Judson Brock of Muddy Fly Guide Service .

A rail is a marsh-dwelling migratory game bird. Their long legs and beak allow them to wade through the marsh as they feed on insects, seeds, snails, and even crawfish. Hunting rails isn’t like a grueling day chasing grouse in the mountains. It takes place mostly from a poling skiff, and it’s not uncommon to shoot a limit.

The strategy is to cover water, hoping between tufts of grass.

“You can pick out where the rails will be because it’s always the tallest thickest grass, and when we’re in between those tufts of grass, we’re also looking for tailing redfish,” says Brock.

Redfish were made for the fly rod. They are perfect for sight casting, they willingly eat flies, and they fight hard. Most of the redfish action will happen at high tide, but on the falling tide, you can switch over to speckled trout fishing.

Rails have a bad rap for tasting like the muddy marshes they inhabit, but Brock has cooking tips that make these birds delicious, and he stresses the importance of field care.

“The important thing to do is have a cooler with ice in it. I always put the birds on ice right away and clean them when I get home,” he says. “I’ll brine them in saltwater for a day or two, soak them in buttermilk, and flash fry them. They’re actually delicious. I’ll make them like that for parties, and people love them.”

4. Maine Grouse and Muskie

Where: Northern Maine

When: October and November

Cast: Muskie

Blast: Grouse

Northern Maine is an outdoor heaven with expansive wilderness and a variety of hunting and fishing opportunities. While it’s known for bear, moose, and big-bodied deer, it also has excellent grouse hunting.

According to Wade Kelly of Tylor Kelly Camps, Maine’s grouse population is going strong. “We haven’t seen the decline like a lot of states have,” he says, and his clients don’t have trouble reaching their four-bird limit.

Grouse hunting involves covering a lot of ground and your day will be spent walking 4 to 5 miles on old logging roads. Kelly guides hunters in the North Maine Woods, a 3.5-million-acre property which is privately owned, but open to public access for a fee. With that much land, it’s not hard to get away from other hunters and find areas with unpressured birds.

When you’re not burning boot leather hunting grouse, you can burn big baits through the water for Muskie. Some hot spots include the St. John River, Allagash River, and Glazier Lake.

There are a lot of places you can go on a Muskie trip, but the odds of catching one in Maine are really good. “In most places, they’re considered a fish of 10,000 casts, but in Maine most days you can catch anywhere from one to three fish,” says Del Harrington of Muskie Connection .

Maine doesn’t only have good numbers of fish. They have big ones too. Harrington guides on the St. John, where the 33-pound state record was caught. Last year Harrington’s average Muskie was 38 inches, a respectable fish anywhere in the country. If a big Muskie is on your bucket list, fall is a great time to fish the St. John.

“The big females don’t feed much during the summer. But in the fall, they are feeding heavily to get ready for winter, so it’s a great time of year to catch a big trophy fish,” Harrington says. “The second week of October through the first week of November is very good fishing.”

When you go Muskie fishing, hope for bad weather. It might seem weird to wish for it, but for Muskie, you don’t want a bluebird day.

“When it comes to Muskie fishing the nastier the weather, the better they bite,” says Harrington. Fly fishing, casting lures, and trolling are all effective fall tactics.

“For casting, we use big rubber baits, like a Bull dawg or Medusa,” says Harrington. Other lures that produce are glide baits and big jointed crankbaits. If you’re fly fishing, you’ll throw big flies in the seven to eight-inch range with a ten weight and a 450-grain sinking line.

5. Ducks and Reds in Cajun Country

Where: New Orleans

When: November and December

Blast: Ducks

When you visit Louisiana, you can expect good fishing, good hunting, and good food. “It’s one of the few places in the country where you can shoot ducks and catch high quality and quantity of fish,” says Chris Pike Jr. of Cast and Blast Charters .

South Louisiana has one of the largest concentrations of migratory waterfowl. It’s a duck hunter’s paradise with a wide variety of available species.

“We mainly focus on puddle ducks like gadwall, teal, pintail, and widgeon,” Pike says.

The consistent migration is one of the reasons the hunting there is so good. “Our ducks aren’t as weather dependent, and we don’t need a strong cold front like a lot of places,” Pike says. The fishing is really good in the fall, and the duck hunting gets better in the winter so, it’s all about timing the two peak seasons. “November to December is the best time to balance good hunting with good fishing,” he says.

On Pike’s cast and blast trip, you’ll leave the dock 30 minutes before daylight headed for the duck blind where you’ll hunt until 10 a.m. After lunch, you’ll jump into a fishing boat and fish from 1 p.m. until dark. It’s a long, but action-packed day that will give you enough stories to last the rest of the winter.

Popping corks with artificial or live bait are the go-to choice for Louisiana reds, but it’s also a great time of year to catch them on the fly.

“The winter time is the best time of year to do any sight casting because the water clarity is consistently good. That’s my best time for anyone that’s interested in fly fishing,” Pike says. And if the great hunting and fishing aren’t enough to keep you busy, you’re only 45 minutes from New Orleans, so you can squeak some sight-seeing into the trip.

Can’t get enough of hunting and fishing? We’ve discovered some of the best outdoor oases that cater to avid outdoorsmen and offer the best of both worlds.

Far too often, hunters and anglers could best be described as singular of purpose. That is, they’re either hunting or they’re fishing, one or the other. Fortunately, and for those who sure don’t mind their walleyes with a side of whitetails or their largemouths mixed liberally with their longbeards, the Midwest offers an almost infinite list of opportunities for those opportunists who enjoy practicing the fine art of the “cast and blast.”

“Cast and blast,” you say? In Iowa, that might be October walleyes at first light, before climbing into a treestand in the afternoon ...or if Ohio in April is more your speed, a gobbler off the roost followed by some post-lunch crappie fishing. Partial to the Black Hills? If so, there are plenty of possibilities that should have you hankering for either trout or turkeys, or both. Multiple species, all out of one basecamp. That’s the dream. And these are the destinations.

$ Honey Creek Resort, Moravia, Iowa

Folks spending time in southern Iowa have their own version of the newspaperman’s Three W’s. In print, the words, or questions, asked by the journalist to his or her interviewee are “who,” followed by “what,” and concluded with “where.” For travelers looking to relax and enjoy some of the finest hospitality the Midwest has to offer, however, those words have much more enjoyable connotations — “walleyes, whitetails and wild turkeys.” And few places are better to set down roots and enjoy Mother Nature’s bounty than at Honey Creek Resort on beautiful Lake Rathbun.

Located just north of Centerville, Iowa, Honey Creek Resort, as well as the original 850-acre Honey Creek State Park, is managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Those searching for an outdoor basecamp have plenty of options at Honey Creek, ranging from the property’s 105-room lodge to more rustic one-, two- and four-bedroom cottages — 28 in all to choose from. An indoor water park, championship 18-hole golf course, and fine dining, courtesy of the Lakeshore Grill, are certain to keep all members of the family happy and entertained.

For anglers, Lake Rathbun needs little introduction. A tremendous year-round trophy walleye fishery (a 12-pound, 12-ounce fish was netted by the IDNR in April 2018) attracts much of the angling attention; however, the lake also holds excellent numbers of crappies, channel cats, flatheads, largemouths and white bass.

In the spring, boaters concentrate on Rathbun’s many small bays as they vie for their 25-fish limit of fine-eating crappies... that is when they’ve not traded the rods for shotguns and head-to-toe camouflage as they try to fool a gobbler on Rathbun’s thousands of public hunting acres.

Come fall, the boats move out onto the shallow rocky flats in search of walleyes, while archers take to the trees waiting out that buck of a lifetime. All told, almost 16,000 acres make up the game-rich wildlife management area, with hunting opportunities not only for deer and turkeys, but pheasants, bobwhite quail, cottontails, fox squirrels and waterfowl.

South Dakota’s Black Hills are undeniably beautiful; the area around the town of Deadwood is even more so. And for the hunting and fishing enthusiast, it’s difficult, some might say impossible, to find a place on the planet with more in the way of outdoor opportunity.

For the turkey hunter, your hunt begins literally as you step out the door of the Lucky Chip. The Black Hills National Forest covers some 1.25 million acres in both South Dakota and neighboring Wyoming and is home to an excellent population of Merriams longbeards.

This is demanding terrain, with the day’s hunt taking you through major elevation changes and into country that can only be described as rugged. But gobblers aren’t the only game in town. Whitetails abound throughout the Hills, as does small game like cottontails, jackrabbits and squirrels.

Predator hunters will find more than their fair share of coyotes throughout the Hills. The national forest is also home to mountain lions, so best keep on your toes and your head on a swivel should you decide to do some calling. The hunter can become the hunted in a heartbeat.

And anglers, you’re not forgotten. It’s well-known that the coastal region is a great place to combine a hunting and fishing trip to make a cast-and-blast adventure at a variety of local lodges.

$ LILY POND LODGE, Jackson, N.C.

Lily Pond Lodge is located near Jackson, N.C., and offers guided trips from three lodge locations. Its main claim to fame in the fishing department is guided trips to the fabled waters of the Roanoke River in March, April and May. “When the stripers are heading upriver on their spawning run, you can catch a fish on every drop,” said Dock Boone, Lily Pond’s owner. “We hunt turkeys in the morning and stripers in the afternoon. Unless the weather is bad, our turkey hunting success rate is near 100 percent and our striper fishing is the best in the world.”

The lodge hosts two hunters per day for cast-and-blast trips, providing guides and gear, but anglers can bring their own tackle. Striped bass are suckers for jigs, soft plastics, crankbaits and flies. All lures must have a single barbless hook.

Lily Pond Lodge also hosts deer, bear and upland bird hunts with released birds. The main lodge is a restored farmhouse that sleeps up to 24 hunters. For turkey hunts, the maximum number of hunters is six. For deer hunters, the usual number is 12. All meals are furnished and the lodge has satellite TV and other amenities.

Lily Pond has two satellite lodges used for deer hunting. Bridgers Creek hosts up to four deer hunters for three-day hunts on 1,500 acres. Verona Plantation accommodates 12 deer hunters, with access to 8,000 acres.

The black bear hunting boasts a 100 percent success rate for trophy black bears. Upland hunting for pheasant, quail and chukar is available on a 100-acre licensed shooting preserve. The lodge also hosts tower shoots for pheasants.

The Cabin Bluff property adjoins the Cumberland Island National Seashore. From Texas to Florida, the Gulf Coast Region is a hotbed of diverse ecosystems both on land and in the water. This makes the region an excellent area for sportsmen and women to conduct a cast-and-blast adventure that is second to none.

The cast-and-blast package at Savagne begins after arrival and check-in with an afternoon saltwater or bass fishing trip. Intercoastal Safaris, based out of Pensacola, offers “uniquely coastal hunting and fishing,” said Lee. “We offer three different ways to hunt ducks, but the most popular with our clients takes place on the barrier islands in and around Perdido Key. Depending on the location of the ducks, our guides set up temporary blinds — we only hunt public land — and that helps keep our costs down, which we pass to our clients.”

Lee’s crew targets redheads, bluebills and bufflehead but has also timed out the “golf course geese.” They spend days watching birds and have timed the arrival of the area’s golf course geese to the minute.

This outfitter has put together trips that stray from the typical image of a cold, muddy, rainy duck hunt and has replaced it with white sands and palm trees.

A cast-and-blast combo with Intercoastal Safaris is much different than with traditional outfitters. It is designed to meet the needs of a new generation of sportsman, while maintaining traditional standards of service that most will recognize.

The morning portion of the day begins with a 10- to 30-minute ride, during which parties of four hunters are ferried to their duck blinds, where a hot breakfast is served. Hunting commences and continues until bag limits are reached or hunting conditions take a turn for the worse.

Upon returning to the lodge, hunters change into fishing gear and are whisked to away to dine, in view of the bay, at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club.

The fishing portion of the day starts after lunch, and there are a couple of options for anglers, such as heading into the marsh for redfish and trout.

$ Blue Bank Resort, Reelfoot Lake, Tennessee

Formed by a series of violent earthquakes between 1811 and 1812, Reelfoot Lake offers excellent fishing and duck hunting. There’s no better lodging than the Blue Bank Resort — family owned and operated for five generations. Its current owner, Michael Hayes, maintains its stellar reputation for service, food, hunting and fishing.

“Reelfoot Lake has some of the best crappie, bluegill and catfish fishing anywhere,” Hayes said. “The duck hunting is also special.”

Looking for a premium experience without the formality of luxury lodges? Hit Deer Creek Lodge in western Kentucky. It’s hosted wingshooters since the early ’80s, and in 2005 a 30-acre lake stocked with trophy bass was added.

Deer Creek has two cast-and-blast packages. Quail-and-bass packages let sportsmen hunt the first day and fish the second, and three-day turkey packages let guests pursue gobblers each morning and fish the afternoons. Guides are provided for all hunting, but guests can choose whether they want a fishing guide.

The main lodge, Wingshooting Lodge, boasts 10,000 square feet and sleeps 16 people. Lakeside Lodge is a “family treat,” Tim Chappell, Deer Creek’s marketing manager, said, and has three bedrooms sleeping eight. Whitetail Lodge is the land’s original farmhouse, renovated in 1999.

Despite the luxurious look, Deer Creek tries to retain the relaxed feel sportsmen enjoy. “We love having a laid-back environment,” Chapelle said. “We try to make people feel like they’re coming to their weekend house or their cabin.”

“Laid back” only applies to the lodge. Deer Creek takes hunting and fishing seriously.

The carefully managed 3,000-acre property offers habitat for upland birds, ducks and turkeys. The property’s turkey kill ratio is between 80 and 90 percent, and its central location (and October-to-March season) maximizes opportunities.

“It’s a different environment because of where we’re located,” Chappell pointed out. “We’re right in the middle of the country, so we can hunt species that other places can’t hunt.”

After fishing, drive two hours east to the Stan Jones Mallard Lodge, a luxury hunting lodge in prime duck country. Stan Jones founded it in 2012, but he’s been guiding much longer.

“When I was in 9th grade, I would take my school principal and superintendent duck hunting,” Jones said. “I’d miss class, but nobody seemed to mind.”Since then, he’s been building his 8,000-acre property to include 52 hunting locations. Only six to eight spots are hunted any given day, leaving ducks over 40 habitats to rest and grow.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Hotel 'housing English-speaking mercenaries' targeted in drone strike

The Russian defence ministry said it destroyed 17 Ukrainian drones, while Ukraine claim Shahed-131/136 type drones launched by Russia caused damage to a hotel and heat-generating infrastructure.

Ukrainian forces that are "well-provisioned" will likely be able to prevent Russian advances in an expected summer offensive. 

In the past, Ukrainian forces have prevented Russian forces from making tactical gains in large-scale offensive efforts, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) says.

The ISW predicts that it is unlikely any sort of summer offensive from the Russians will be significantly larger or more intense than their previous efforts.

However, the key factor is Ukraine being "well-provisioned". 

The ISW adds that Russian forces will make tactical gains in the coming weeks as Ukraine waits for military aid from the US to arrive. 

Russian forces have opportunities to make significant tactical gains in the Avdiivka area and pursue an operationally significant objective with the seizure of Chasiv Yar," the ISW says, adding that neither of these efforts is likely to develop in the near future.

Following on from our last post, Ukraine have claimed that a Russian drone attack heavily damaged a hotel in the southern city of Mykolaiv.

Mykolaiv's governor, Vitaly Kim, said Shahed-131/136 type drones were used in the strike which "heavily damaged" the hotel building. 

"A fire broke out, which was quickly extinguished... There are no casualties," Mr Kim said. 

A heat-generating infrastructure was damaged as well as the windows of a separate hotel.

Russia's RIA state news agency, citing Russian underground fighters in the region, confirmed they had hit a shipbuilding plant and a hotel in Mykolaiv where English-speaking mercenaries fighting in Ukraine were housed.

Ukraine's air force said four other drones launched by Russia were destroyed around the capital, Kyiv, the central Vinnytsia and Kirovohrad regions, and over the western Khmelnytskyi region.

Russia's air defence systems destroyed 17 Ukrainian drones, the defence ministry has said.

The attack targeted an oil storage facility in the Kaluga region - just south of Moscow, according to Vladislav Shapsha, regional governor of Kaluga.

He said three drones were downed in the region and that there were no casualties or damage.

A further nine drones were destroyed over the Bryansk region, three over the Kursk region and two over the Belgorod region.

Yesterday, Russia bombarded Ukraine once again in an attack that hit energy infrastructure. 

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said afterward that the strikes had targeted facilities "crucial" to the European Union's gas supply. 

Moscow, for its part, claimed the attacks were "in response to attempts by the Kyiv regime to damage Russian energy and industrial facilities". 

Elsewhere, it was reported that US intelligence agencies had determined Vladimir Putin most likely did not order Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's death. 

Mr Navalny died at an Arctic prison camp in February at the age of 47.

British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has shared this footage of the UK's Storm Shadow missiles being produced.

The long-range cruise missiles have been among the aid sent to Ukraine by the UK, and have been used to strike deep into Russian-controlled territory.

Earlier this week, the UK said it would commit even more Storm Shadows to Ukraine. 

The missiles have an official range in excess of 155 miles - although some experts have suggested they may be able to go further. 

Mr Shapps said the missiles were also being created to add to British stockpiles to "fight any future wars".

When the UK provided long-range Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine, it was done on the understanding that these would only be used to target Russian forces in occupied territory, and not against Russia itself. 

Despite the limitations, Ukraine has complied, and that appears to have improved US confidence to the point they are prepared to supply the ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) missile. 

Indeed, we now understand that the US first supplied the ATACMS last month - in secret - and it appears to have proven its worth with attacks on a Russian-occupied airfield in Crime on 17 April, and earlier this week in an attack on Russian troop concentrations.

But will this new weapon risk an escalation of the war?

Russia knows that it faces strategic failure if the West were to commit fully to the defence of Ukraine, so it will continue to use threatening rhetoric and sabre-rattling to undermine Western political resolve. 

The interesting question is whether the introduction of ATACMS will change the course of the war. Long-range missiles are very effective at targeting and influencing the "deep battle" - the logistics that feed the front-line fight. However, they have limited impact on the frontline.  

The shortage of Ukrainian weapons is being exploited by Russia, which is making significant battlefield gains.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has identified that his immediate priority is to "stabilise" the frontlines. 

Instead, ATACMS and the new package of Western military support provides Ukraine with a lifeline. 

In the city of Kharkiv, municipal workers are helping to clear up an area near a psychiatric hospital that targeted by Russia. 

Workers are draining a crater left behind by the attack and also inspecting damaged communication lines. 

A 53-year-old patient was injured in the strike.

Ben Wallace has hit out at German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for suggesting British and French troops are on the ground in Ukraine to programme cruise missiles. 

The chancellor had previously justified his refusal to send Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine by saying it would require German troops on the ground to programme them. 

He had suggested British and French soldiers were in Ukraine to help with their Storm Shadow and Scalp missiles.

But Mr Wallace said in an interview with German news agency dpa: "[Scholz] was wrong... I can't tell you how Storm Shadows and Scalps are programmed. 

"But it doesn't involve people standing around in an airport in Ukraine, it doesn't need to do that." 

The former defence secretary also criticised Mr Scholz's hesitation to send Taurus missiles, saying: "You can't incrementally help Ukraine, you know, a bit of this and a bit of that. 

"Do we want Ukraine to win? Or do we want them to lose?... 

"Ukraine will abide by any restrictions you put on them. So you could give them Taurus. And you could add all sorts of restrictions about where you want it used or not used." 

Mr Wallace added that Mr Scholz is "not a leader for conflict at the moment" and that "looking either indecisive, or flip-flopping on certain decisions, or seeming to be out of step with your allies, only aids Putin". 

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said this morning's Russian attack on Ukraine's energy sector had targeted gas facilities important for supply to the European Union.

The main target was the energy sector, various facilities in the industry, both electricity and gas transit facilities," he said in his nightly video address. 

"In particular, those gas facilities that are crucial to ensuring safe delivery to the European Union." 

Moscow earlier claimed its strikes were "in response to attempts by the Kyiv regime to damage Russian energy and industrial facilities".

6/17/21:  Two new titles have landed on Apple Arcade. Frenzic: Overtime is a remake of the original popular puzzler from the Iconfactory that first launched on Mac OS X in 2007. Meanwhile, the simulation title Game Dev Story has arrived on Apple Arcade too.

6/4/20:  It doesn’t look like we’re getting a new Apple Arcade title this week but there is a major update for the popular RPG  Oceanhorn 2 with the Golden Edition today (via CNET ). The expansion marks a great time to replay the game or jump in for the first time.

5/28/20: Apple Arcade has added a new game from Nickelodeon called SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit . Here’s how it’s described:

Trouble has come to Bikini Bottom! The evil “mastermind” Sheldon J. Plankton has once again hatched a plan to steal the secret Krabby Patty formula. This time he has enlisted his army of cousins to capture all of SpongeBob’s friends! Play as SpongeBob on his epic, most side-scrolly quest through Bikini Bottom ever! Explore, collect coins and spatulas, and crush obstacles as SpongeBob races to rescue his friends, defeat Plankton’s minions and take back the formula. 5/22/20:  Apple Arcade sees the arrival of a new dungeon crawler RPG,  Towers of Everland .

5/14/20:  Launched today on Apple Arcade is a fun new puzzle journey called  Winding Worlds .

5/8/20:  Apple Arcade has gained  The_Otherside , a new turn-based RPG.

5/1/20:  The latest addition to Apple Arcade is the adventure title  Neversong .

4/17/20:  Apple Arcade has gained two new titles today with Beyond Blue and A Fold Apart . The former is a deep-sea diving adventure game and the latter is a “love story in a paper world” puzzler.

Beyond Blue takes you into the near future, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the mysteries of our ocean through the eyes of Mirai, a deep sea explorer and scientist. You and your newly-formed research team will use groundbreaking technologies to see, hear, and interact with the ocean in a more meaningful way than has ever been attempted. The game features an evocative narrative, exploration of an untouched world, and adventure that challenges the player to make high-stakes decisions during the crew’s expedition.

4/10/20:  The new side-scroller  Scrappers is now available on Apple Arcade.

In Scrappers, up to 4 players can team up to clean up the streets of a futuristic city teeming with garbage — and trash anyone who gets in their way! You take on the role of the Scrappers, a squad of robot garbage collectors working to clean up a grimy city of the not-so-distant future. Time is money in Junktown, and team tactics like stacking trash and passing it to teammates — much like in basketball — can boost your efficiency for bigger rewards! But garbage collection is only part of the job. Rival teams will attack and interfere, and it’s up to you to dispose of them while staying on schedule! 4/3/20:   Legend of the Sky Fish 2 , a new RPG has landed on Apple Arcade.

3/20/20 : Spyder is out as the latest Apple Arcade title:

3/13/20 : New today is the “bouncy dungeon crawler”  Roundguard .

2/7/20 : This week’s new title is  Charrua Soccer . It features retro 3D gameplay and features three modes: Friendly Match, Competitions, and Penalty Match.

You can choose player vs computer or player vs player.  Charrua Soccer  features simple controls with fun and challenging gameplay.

1/31/20: Secret Oops!   has arrived, a multiplayer AR party game.

Secret Oops! is an innovative cooperative local multiplayer Augmented Reality game where players try to make sure that the world’s dumbest spy isn’t detected.

1/24/20: The newest title for Apple Arcade is Butter Royale , a “Buttery food fight, battle royale style!”

Have the food fight of your life in Butter Royale, a multiplayer battle royale game, and be the last one standing on Butter Island. Play against 31 other players in fast–paced food battles (under 5 minutes) with the help of sauce-shooting, baguette-blasting kichen tools!

1/17:  Kings of the Castle   has launched today on Apple Arcade.

Speed to the rescue in this fun, multiplayer fairy tale. Save the prince before anyone else using your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. But watch out for their spells. … Playing as the princess, you must use your speed, courage, and savvy sense of direction to save the prince. 12/12 /19 :  Apple Arcade has gained the crossover action hockey game  Ultimate Rivals: The Rink .

12/3 /19 :  Apple has featured Towaga: Among Shadows on its YouTube channel. The title previously launched on in October.

Wish they would get some heavier games, like an RTS (a la Starcraft) and great storyline FPS's (like Halo) into Arcade. Their hardware can definitely handle it, it would be amazing to really stretch their legs on games like these.
