Ettina Bhuja: The perfect first-timers' trek

The magnificent Ettina Bhuja is a part of the Charmadi ghat in Karnataka at an altitude of 4265 ft. and offers beautiful view of the entire region.

The term Ettina Bhuja literally translates to Ox’s shoulder because the shape of the peak looks like one.

It is also called Shishila Gudda by the locals there. It is one of the unexplored treks in Karnataka, which is near Mudigere.

It is a short trek; hence it is recommended to come over with a weekend plan, stay overnight and explore nearby places.

How to reach Ettina Bhuja

Ettina Bhuja

The closest village for the trek is Mudigere town; direct overnight buses  run from Bengaluru and other main cities of Karnataka to Mudigere.

You can take this bus around 10-11 PM and reach the next day at 4-5:00 AM.

The best option after getting to Mudigere to save time is to take a l ocal rickshaw  to the start point of the trek (Sri Nanya Bhairaveshwara temple, Byrapura). They  charge around INR 600 for this ride .

The road leading up to the start point is accessible via private vehicle, and the journey is beautiful and misty. So, you can also take your vehicle to the start point of the trek and park it near the temple.

Trek Route & Difficulty

Ettina Bhuja

You can do the trek from two locations, Shishila village &  Bhairaveshwara temple, Byrapura . Here we will talk about the one starting from the latter because the one starting from Shishila village is difficult.

The trek  duration  is about  1 to 1.5 hours , and you cover a  distance  of  3-3.5 kms . It is an  easy trek ; however, the final section is a vertical climb to reach the top of the peak.

It is ideal to start the trek early in the morning by 6-6:30 AM so you can avoid the crowd and the beautiful golden hour from the top of the peak.

This trek is known for its panoramic views of the valley & the lush green forest trails post monsoons.

The trek can be divided into 3 sections:

  • The start point to the forest trail : This part of the trek is through a jungle & can hear the sound of nature early in the morning. You will take about 15-25 mins to complete this section.
  • From the forest trail to the 2nd viewpoint: The course starts getting steep from this point onwards. This viewpoint offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains. Time taken: 25-30 mins.
  • 2nd viewpoint to the peak: The last section will take another 30 mins as it tends to get a bit steep, and the final patch is a rocky climb where one needs to be careful. The top provides breathtaking views of the western ghats of Karnataka.

Important Information

  • Before the lockdown, there was an entry fee of INR 250, and the authorities provided a local guide for a group of 10; however, there has been no entry fee or local guides recently.
  • The trek starts at 6:00 AM and closes at 3:00 PM.
  • The trek is advised after the monsoon ends because the valley is at its prettiest during this time, the entire valley is covered by fog, and even the drive to Mekanagadde is misty, which is a sight in itself.

Ettina Bhuja Trek, Sakleshpur

Ettina bhuja trek from bangalore.

The Ettina Bhuja trek is a part of the beautiful Charmadi Ghat, in the Western Ghats, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the 36 Biodiversity Hotspots in the world. It is situated at a distance of 250 kms from Bengaluru and this region is well-known for the outstanding scenery it unfolds and is one among the many unexplored trekking trails in Karnataka. The Ettina Bhuja trek is worthy enough to be considered as Karnataka’s hidden gem and is something that every trekker should include in their bucket list.

Ettina Bhuja is approximately 25 km from the Mudigere range of Chikmagalur district. The altitude of the Ettina Bhuja peak is about 1300 metres which comes to about 4265 ft. The locals in this region also call “Ettina Bhuja” by the name “Shishila Gudda" for the promising splendid views of the Charmadi and the Shishila valley. Ettina Bhuja is surrounded by many other hills namely, Deepada Kallu, Amedikallu, Ombattu Gudda and Jenukallu Gudda.

The post-monsoon season is considered to be the best time to go on with the trek. During this season, the Ettina Bhuja weather conditions will be desirable which enables the trekkers to enjoy the greenery around, enhancing their overall trek experience. The travellers can actually take up two different trekking route options here. The first route starts from the Shishila village. This is in fact a challenging route and a guide is a must, in case one decides to take up this difficult terrain. The second route begins at Sri Nanya Bhairaveshwara temple in Byrapura village. This route offers a slightly easier trekking experience. However, if one is planning to take up the Shishila village route as the starting point of the Ettina Bhuja Trek, then it is highly advisable to wait till the end of October, so that the intensity of the current of Kapila river subsides by then.

The Ettina Bhuja trek distance is around 5 kms and typically takes about a maximum time of 3 hours to complete. The ideal time window to go on with the trekking lies anywhere between 7.00AM in the morning and it's better to wind up before 5.00PM so that there’ll be ample time for rest at the end of the day. For a non-professional trekker, the Ettina Bhuja trek is a perfect opportunity to begin with. The breathtaking scenery and the panoramic views of the Charmadi and Shishila valleys makes Ettina Bhuja an ideal destination for family vacations as well.

The multiple points of interest of Ettina Bhuja trek are, along the trek, hikers will encounter different sections of trekking which includes the starting point, i.e., the Nanya Bhairaveshwara temple, Byrapura, the forest section and the viewpoint section. The amazing beauty of the surrounding region, stunning flowers and grasslands make an excellent addition to this trek. The Ettina Bhuja peak is accessible within 5 mins of walking from the temple. The hikers are taken through the forest, making the trek very slippery and muddy. The initial trail is quite easy to traverse, but as the forest section ends, and the second view point emerges, it becomes slightly steeper to make it up to the peak. However, reaching the peak is truly rewarding, as the views are spectacular and it feels so great to watch the sunrise and sunset across the mountain. Bamboo and cane plantations can be witnessed all along the way, and if lucky enough, the hikers will get a chance to spot some Sambar Deer species along the way. The calm and tranquil environment of Ettina Bhuja provides a habitat for various bird species, including the Indian Black Bird and the Malabar Whistling Thrush.

Another exciting fact for readers is that Ettina Bhuja has served as a backdrop for a long sequence in kannada film Love Mocktail 2. Also, according to the ancient tales passed down through generations, it is believed that the Pandavas, from the Indian epic Mahabharata sought refuge here during the years of their exile.

In conclusion, the Ettina Bhuja location is a wonderful manifestation of Karnataka’s natural beauty which satisfies both an adventure seeker with a challenging trekking experience as well as a nature lover by offering a peaceful escape into nature. So, gather all that you need, as it’s the time to set out on a fantastic trekking journey!

Best places to visit & explore at ettina bhuja.

One of the highlights of my journey was admiring the unique and beautiful fauna in the area. One needs to keep there eye out for rare creatures such as the giant flying squirrel, giant spotted deer, brown palm viper, gaur, and other unusual species.

Another unforgettable experience was watching the sunset at the peak. Although the height of the hill may not be as dramatic as other taller mountains in the region, the sunset was still breathtaking. I had the option to either camp at the peak or simply stop to enjoy the stunning view. I also took some time off to visit Dharmasthala, a little panchayat village famed for its temples. With just two days and one night, I was able to cover this beautiful place.

If you’re looking for other trekking options nearby, Devaramane Betta, a small hill located 22 KM from Mudigere, is popular for its stunning sunsets. At the base of the hill is an ancient Chola temple, Sri Kalabhairaveshwara Swaami Gudi, which is also worth visiting.

What is the best time to visit Ettina Bhuja?

The best time to visit is post-monsoon season, which is from September to February. During this time, the lush surroundings of the Charmadi range are refreshing and provide the perfect backdrop for a trek. However, be mindful of leeches during this season and carry salt to ward them off.

If you can’t make it during the post-monsoon season, winter (December to March) is the next best option. Although the grasses would have dried up, the Shola forests display an interesting mix of colors. It’s best to avoid visiting during peak summer (April-May) due to the extreme heat, and trekking during the rains (June-August) can be dangerous because of the slippery trail.

How to reach the Starting Point of Trek?

Reaching Ettina Bhuja, a trek location located close to Dharmasthala, is easy and convenient. You can either drive to Byrapura village, Mudigere in Chikkamagaluru district on your own or take public transport.

The quickest and most scenic route from Bangalore to Byrapura is via Hassan. You can take the highway from Bangalore to Hassan and then take the Mudigere road via Belur. Once you reach Ambedkar circle, Belur, turn left to stay on NH73 to reach Byrapura. Alternatively, you can take the bus to Mudigere or Dharmasthala from Bangalore and reach the starting point of the trek.

If you’re coming from a different city, you can fly to Mangalore Airport (146 kms) or Bangalore Kempegowda International Airport (280 kms), and then take a train to Mangalore Station (70 kms) or book a bus to Shishila village. From there, you can pre-book a cab ride to reach Ettina Bhuja.

Difficulty Level of Ettina Bhuja Trek

Ettina Bhuja trek is an easy trail, but the final section of the climb can be a bit challenging during the monsoon season. The rocky part with a 75-80 degree inclination is narrow and allows for only one person at a time. It’s important to bring a guide and wear sturdy shoes, as some parts can be slippery. Overall, Ettina Bhuja trek requires some stamina to reach the peak, but is a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

Availability of Accommodations & Food near the Trek

Accommodation:.

As of 2022, there are no homestays nearby Ettina Bhuja, but a new homestay is under construction and is expected to open in 2023. It is located after the forest check post office. Visitors usually stay overnight in Chikmagalur or Mudigere, both of which have numerous hotels and lodges available.

Food & Drinks:

There are no restaurants in the village of Byrapura, but there is a small shop where you can buy snacks or quick bites like Maggi or Bread Omelet. It is recommended to bring at least 1 liter of water per person in a reusable water bottle as there are no natural water sources available en route during the hike.

Physical & Mental Preparation Required for Trek

There is no longer an entry fee or local guides, so you’ll have the freedom to explore on your own. However, it’s recommended to start your trek early, at 6:00 AM, and finish before 3:00 PM.

When it comes to what to bring, make sure to have a waterproof backpack, comfortable trekking shoes with a good grip, and an ID proof. Additionally, it’s important to be mindful of the environment and not litter or cause noise pollution. If you have prior trekking experience, it’ll be beneficial, but it’s not required. The valley is at its prettiest after the monsoon season, with the entire valley covered by fog and the drive to Mekanagadde misty. So, get ready for a breathtaking experience!

If you are dependent on public transport, board a bus to Byrapura from Mudigere and get down at the last stop. From there walk for 500m to reach the Nanya Bhairaveshwara Temple; the base of the hike.

The first bus departs from Mudigere at around 5 AM and reaches at 6 AM at Byrapura. The last bus from Byrapura departs by 5:30 PM. Plank your hike accordingly to ensure you are present when the last bus departs from Byrapura.

We recommend reaching the base through means of personal transport, that way you are in no time constraint or rush. You also have the flexibility of stopping at your own pace and sightseeing at your convenience.

The best time to visit Ettina Bhuja is during the post-monsoon months between September and December. At this ideal time, you get to see spectacular mountains in all their glory, littered with different shades of green and without the interference of mist.

We recommend going during weekdays. You can have a place for yourselves. Weekends and holidays tend to be crowded.

Muddy hiking route to Ettina Bhuja

Hiking Route:

The hike starts from the Nanya Bhairaveshwara temple. There is no place to freshen up here, except the restrooms. The left visible route is your go-to way. After crossing the muddy terrain for about 100 m, you will find the forest check-post office. After a few meters, take the right turn when the path forks.

Ram and Sita visited place

According to the Hindu myth Ramayanam, Ram, and Sita are said to have crossed this route during their exile in the forest. You can find the black Kumkum in one of the trees towards your right in a tree hole en route. Hindus usually place them on their foreheads as ‘thilak.’

Ettina Bhuja hiking route and direction

After a few meters, the trail narrows and you can notice that the directions are marked with name boards impaled on the trees. We saw three boards guiding us to the summit. The sound of insects and gushing waterfalls can be heard constantly soaring into your ears as you progress.

Small hill before the Ettina Bhuja summit

After crossing the small hilltop, you will reach the open terrain. Here, the peak can be clearly seen. After that, it is a straight visible route to the summit. Clouds play hide and seek on the summit with slight drizzles and cool breezes during the monsoon making the weather near perfect for your hike. The forest check-post office, the temple, and the newly constructed homestay can be seen when you reach the open terrain, just before the final push to the summit.

The summit push is slippery during monsoon with stones easily giving way when set afoot. Ensure that you are very careful and aware of your surroundings and the terrain during the descent.

At The Ettina Bhuja Summit:

first timer hiker & trekker tips -View from the Ettina Bhuja peak

You can see Dhakshina Kannada and peaks like Deepadha Kallu, Ombathu Gudda, and JenuKallu Gudda to name a few.

About the Ettina Bhuja Trek

The best way to begin the Ettina Bhuja Trek is from Kukkada near Dharmastala. Start the journey by heading to Shishila. There are many ways to go there throughout the year. You can book a package that includes food and a stay at a nearby farmhouse or famous trekking cottages for the night.

There are streams, lush green vegetation and the possibility to camp under twinkling stars. Although it is not difficult, you will need to be able to climb to the summit. Consider bringing a guide and wearing good shoes, as there are some parts that can get slippery.

You can start with a jeep, and park it at the base. Then, you can walk until you reach a stream, then cross it by foot. After you have cleared the minor obstacles, it will be easier to climb uphill slowly. To reach the top, allow at least 5 hours.

Things to Do

Admire the fauna.

Keep an eye out for the most unique and beautiful creatures that are not often seen in the city. You may be lucky enough to spot the giant flying squirrel, giant spotted deer, brown palm viper, gaur and other unusual creatures.

Watch the Sunset

ettina buja trekking in mudigere Chikmagalur

Because the peak isn't very high, the sunrise or sunset at the peak may not be quite as dramatic. There are actually taller mountains in this region. The sunset is worth it all. You can either camp there or stop to enjoy the sunset.

How to Reach Ettina Bhuja

More About Ettina Bhuja

Ettina Bhuja a hidden gem on a trail in southern Karnataka. It is a short trek to Ettina Bhuja. This trek is perfect for beginners and those who have limited trekking experience. Ettina Bhuja is a peak at 1300msl in the Charmadi Ghats area of Karnataka. Ettina Bhuja's name is classical Kannada and means "ox's shoulder". The peak is shaped like the hump of an ox's head. Shishila is the starting point for Ettina Bhuja's trekking route. It is located 15kms from Dharmasthala. Trekkers usually hire a jeep to take them from Shishila up to Holegundi, where the trail actually begins. The peak is located 8 kms from Holegundi. This is a more difficult trail than most and the vegetation covers them quickly so it is easy to get lost. The trail begins with Ettina Bhuja visible through the trees. You will reach the Kapila river crossing about a kilometer away from Holegandi. Although the water level isn't high, it is strong and slippery. A stream that flows in the opposite direction is found a few minutes later. This is a tributary to the Kapila river. This gentle stream offers tranquility and is a great spot for a rest. You can follow the stream's gurgling sounds along the trail. One can trek along the stream for more than an hour through leech land. This stretch is renowned for its mini waterfall, the gurgling sounds from the water, dense canopy of trees, gradual ascent, and undefined trails. As the gradient increases, the trail gradually moves away from the stream. The trail is home to a wide variety of mushrooms, which makes for some great photos. One can see Ettina Bhuja again as the forest gives way to grasslands.

The trekkers are separated by rolling hills and green valleys. You will travel through valleys and hills, shola forests, and grasslands on your way to the summit. The two-hour stretch is exhausting. It is recommended to take breaks from the heat by sheltering under trees during the crossings. It is a steep ascent that is hard on the nerves. A beautiful grassland lies at the base of the majestic peak. From behind the peak, you will make your final ascent to Ettina Bhuja. Trekkers who plan to camp close to the peak will set up camps, and then ascend the peak as the sun sets. It can be very draining to burn your energy in the scorching heat. The peak is best for experienced trekkers who take a break before continuing on to the summit. It is quite close to the summit. It takes approximately 30 minutes to climb the final peak, which is incredibly thrilling. To reach Ettina Bhuja, the adventurous will attempt to climb up a 70-degree slope and on fours for a portion. This route, which is less strenuous, takes you along rocky ridges and circles the peak. The views from these ridges are breathtaking. Deep gorges can be found on one side, and rocky areas on the other. Trekkers arrive at Ettina Bhuja with their hearts full.

Ettina Bhuja has breathtaking views of the Charmadi Ghats' peaks, including the Ombattu Gudda Gudda or Amedikallu. Beautiful sunset views can be enjoyed from the peak. It is easy to see the Bhairaveshwara temple on the plains. Windy, the rocky peak is exposed and no trees provide shade. The base of the peak is where trekkers can camp amid the cold winds, starry sky and freezing temperatures. Ettina Bhuja, which is not the highest peak in Charmadi Ghats, rises at dawn later than other taller peaks. It is a stunning sight to see the sun light up the peak, creating a golden glow that will stay with you forever. The trekking community of South India is fondly aware that Ettina Bhuja can be reached amid tall elephant grass, moist forests, a wide range of mushrooms, harsh sunlight, slippery rocks, difficult trails and open skies. It is imposing from all angles and the final ascent gives you a great sense of accomplishment.

Etthina Bhuja – My First Trek along the Western Ghats

ettina bhuja trek package

Hello, Dear Readers,

I’m back with a long due travel post for this week!

It was not until I found myself savouring tangy spiced corn, roasted on an open flame under an almost full moon, at a roadside tea shop more than a 100 km from home, did I realise that my unlock 1.0 had finally begun. After spending every weekday, weekend and holidays at home for seven long months, paranoid about human contact and fighting nostalgia at the mention of travel, I had finally come out of the cocoon. Ettina Bhuja – My first trek along the Western Ghats happened in the middle of the pandemic.

Terrain Marauders , a good friend’s brainchild, is what inspired me to join the trek group – a group of 11 who started out as strangers and ended up making some beautiful memories together. More about TM at the end.

We started out on Friday night from Bengaluru and reached the homestay at Mudigere in the wee hours of the morning. A completely sanitized Tempo Traveller was arranged and our temperatures were noted before we got in.

Day 1: Pandavara Gudda, Abbi Falls and Devarmane View Point

On reaching Mudigere, while some of us settled in the homestay, others walked into the misty rice fields at the back, watching the rising sun paint the sky an orange-gold. The serenity and splendour of this lesser-known town were already having an effect on us. Needless to say, this is where our photoshoots for the day began.

A piping hot cup of coffee and light fruit breakfast later, we started our mini trek for day 1.

The road leading to Pandavara Gudda at the time of our visit was in a bad shape and as a result, we had a km long walk before reaching the Bettada Bhyreshwara temple at the base of the hill. As the sun was already up, we decided to finish the climb and visit the temple on return.

On reaching the first peak or level one of the hill, the view was dreamy with an abundance of greenery, the cold breeze wafting across our face and taking away the exhaustion. I took a quick break here – more to catch my breath than to catch the view. At this point, we found ourselves surrounded by hills and mountains on all sides – a palette of green and brown under a blanket of mist.

An hour later we finally reached the peak from where the Ettina Bhuja mountain (the main trek for this trip) was clearly visible. It was like catching a glimpse of the movie after the end of the trailer. I was a tad bit nervous, to say the least. To me, the view here was only slightly better than the one at level one, probably because of the scorching heat and lack of breeze. Nonetheless, it made a great spot for group photographs and some posed candids. The descend towards the base was easy and we reached the temple in a short time.

The Bettada Bhyreshwara Temple is believed to be over 600 years old. It sits on top of a hill and overlooks the entire valley giving an impression that God himself is standing guard over the place. A flight of stairs from the temple leads to a small lake amidst the forest.

To someone like me who decided to join the trek with no preparation whatsoever, this trek on day 1 worked as a warm-up for what was awaiting the next day. Although not very steep, the climb to Pandavara Gudda was slightly tiring for beginners like me.

Our second stop for the day was the Abbi Falls also known as Hanbal or Magajahalli Falls. Here, for the first time, I got an opportunity to stand right under the falls and experience the sweet sting of the drumming water on my back. It was an exciting and relaxing experience at the same time. With a depth of not more than 5 feet, it is a safe spot even if you do not know to swim. Post this, we returned to the homestay and had our lunch – a traditional South Indian meal in an open field surrounded by greenery on all sides.

Our next and last stop for the day – Devaramane View Point was an hour’s journey from the homestay. As the sun went down, the fog and the cold wind made a return and we pulled out our jackets and mufflers. The path to the top was slightly rocky and sadly the sunset was not visible due to the fog. Nevertheless, an amazing viewpoint where you can sit for hours, listening to the wind whooshing in your ears and feast your eyes on the lush greenery that extends as far as you can see.

The cherry on the top for the day was camping in the open field surrounded by tall trees on all sides. A bonfire kept us all warm while we danced, sang and savoured crispy onion pakoras. The full moon glowing above us in the cloudless sky set the perfect ambience.

Day 2: Etthina Bhuja

If you understand Kannada, you might have already guessed what the name stands for. At an altitude of 4265 ft, Ettina Bhuja is a mountain shaped like an ox’s shoulder or hump. It sits in the Charmadi range of Western Ghats. and is also called Shishila Gudda Trek by the localities, as it overlooks the Shishila valley when you reach the peak.

We left the homestay at 6:30 AM, hoping to return from the trek by 10:oo AM.  The Tempo Traveller dropped us at the Nanya Bhairaweshwara Temple  which happens to be the starting point of the trek.

The climb to Ettina Bhuja can be divided into three sections – Temple to the Forest, Forest to the View Point and finally View Point to the Peak.

While to many the trek is all about waiting to reach the peak and capturing the panoramic view, to me, the best part of the trek was the walk through the forest at the start. With the birds chirping in the background, leaves rustling under my feet and the wind whistling in my ears, the walk through the forest was what set the scene for the trek. I was also fortunate enough to not encounter any leech attacks. Although, many are of the opinion that a trek is incomplete without being bitten by at least one of these nasty little things.

ettina bhuja trek package

The viewpoint here, especially in the early hours of the morning is a treat to the senses. From here the peak is clearly visible. The wind is stronger than the previous leg and since the terrain is mostly grassland, it flows with all its might. From this point, the trek gets a little tricky. Although the distance from the viewpoint to the peak is less it is steeper and there are places you might need to use both your hands for support as well.

Needless to say, the thrill of reaching the peak along with the amazing view on all sides is what makes the climb worthwhile. All the prominent peaks and viewpoints in the surrounding areas are visible from here.

On our return journey to Bengaluru, we took an unplanned detour to an 1860s French Missionary Church called Shettihalli Rosary Church . The church was almost submerged at the time of our visit. I later learnt that it is also called the submerged or Floating Church for the same reason.

ettina bhuja trek package

With this our two day trip to Mudigere came to an end. We reached Bengaluru a little past eleven in the night. In short, the trip was the perfect start for my unlock 1.0. Looking forward to many more in 2021.

What I like most about TM apart from the pocket-friendly treks and trips they offer, is the experience they create for you. Having spent little fortunes on many package tours all my life, I know how dull they can be. But with TM, the experience was completely different. From flexible timings, quick stops for roadside food cravings, squeezing in time for additional must-visit places and camping under the moonlit sky, it is not only a paisa-wasool experience but also manages to take you back to your college days where you can relish the present without a care in the world. The organiser here plays a dual role as a guide and a friend.

The stay, food and guide for the local sight-seeing were arranged in collaboration with Rahasya Daari.
