The Best Float on the Meramec River

I’ve floated this river a lot and Darryl and Cathy are the best in the business. For a smaller canoe rental, they have a lot to choose from. kayaks, tandem kayaks, canoes, or rafts you can't go wrong with any of them. The ride to the put in, is a short drive away and the float is long enough with plenty of gravel bars to stop at to have a great time. They also give back to the community and the river by supporting Operation Clean Stream every year. Support this smaller canoe business and enjoy the best the Meramec has to offer.

I messed up and got the wrong date. Sent an email and it was taken care of very quickly. They even called to confirm. That goes a long way in my book. Somebody that actually practices customer service! I'm coming back next weekend.

I come here time and time again. The staff is friendly and helpful. I love the float trip. The proximity to Saint Louis cannot be beat. Excellent operation!

Reservation, waivers and payment were all conveniently handled online. Check-in was easy and every staff member was extremely helpful and friendly. We will definitely be return customers!

Wanted something closer to St Louis for floating and I’ve found it! Less than an hour and you’re there. Legit website reservations. Kayak includes floatation devices and seat cushions. Show up around your reservation time and they bus you to your drop off spot.

My neighbors did a group outing and I was very impressed with Old Cove Canoe and Kayak. We were able to handle all the paperwork online so the day of the float was not chaotic with wavers etc... The staff was very friendly and informative. Gave us detail instructions on halfway point, average time the float should take and where to stop and play if we wanted to make the float last longer. They made it a stress-free float for me.

Went kayaking with my wife, brother and his wife. Had a great time, we were out on the water in less than half an hour of arriving and the stretch of river was beautiful. Will definitely be back.

Everyone was friendly - everyone. Check in was quick. Map your directions to their location before you leave- cell service is sketchy out there. They have a short float and a long float. My wife and I did the long one, including a lunch and snack stop, in about 5 hours. We did paddle off/on because there wasn’t a breeze. Take your time and have a great time. I’m totally going back!! :)

The online booking, confirmations, parking, check-in, shuttle, launch, and exit were all efficient. The staff was super-friendly, and the kayak float itself was peaceful and fun, with plenty of nice spots to stop along the way.

This is a GREAT place to go. It was my first float. The staff was very helpful. They helped us in and out of the water. They did everything to make our day enjoyable.

First time visiting Old Cove Canoe and Kayak. The owners’ hospitality was much appreciated!! We were underprepared without ice and coolers for our drinks and they lent us their own. A great experience and great price! Highly Recommend.

Been going here for the past three seasons and couldn’t be more pleased with every float we’ve had. Darryl and his crew are always kind, respectful and extremely helpful loading and unloading all your coolers and gear for the float. Highly recommend!

Buyer beware!!! Places like this make it hard to support small businesses. Horrible customer service: Once they have your money they no longer care about the customer. I had a float trip booked a month in advance for memorial day weekend. St. Louis natives know that weekend turned out to be chilly and cloudy and what was supposed to be at least 68F was now actually 60F or colder. You know the little box you check agreeing to terms and conditions prior to purchase...it said you could reschedule for bad weather so I called as soon as they opened that morning for my 1pm float time and was told it was fine call back during week when office staff was in. When I called back, the brash customer service lady and later even ruder owner told me what already cost me $250 was now going to cost an additional $120 to reschedule. Huh??! I mention the weather--Oh they only cancel for high waters. I mention fee not in the terms and conditions-- they put it somewhere on site. I mention no one informed me of fee whn I called day of--they assumed I knew. I mention the poor customer service-- I was met with you want to rebook or not. I guess we were supposed to put on sweaters and pants and spend 3 hours sheevering or get sick that day. They clearly do not value customers so do yourself a favor and just go to Six flags or one of the other higher rated float destinations.

Jess was amazing at working with us to schedule a hayride for our Fall Festival at our church. She was incredibly flexible as we worked through weather and quarantine challenges. We will DEFINITELY use them next year! The hayride was super fun, driver was so friendly and helpful and they even brought us hay bales for seating(which we did pay extra for, but so worth it!) And they took the hay bales back!

Everything you need to know is on their website. They return calls and reply back within a reasonable time. Very friendly helpful and make your outing and experience the best ever! You won’t be disappointed!

I would leave 0/10 if I could. I booked a float trip for 8/12 and was notified by email at 5pm that night that my trip was being cancelled due to high water levels. I then had to schedule a float for somewhere else as I had company coming in from out of town. I asked for a refund and was told I could reschedule that they do not do refunds. I feel this is very poor practice to not issue refunds. I did not cancel, they did. I therefore had to pay for 2 float trips that day and due to the very poor customer service I do not plan to ever book a float trip with this company in the future. I see other reviews similar to this, just wish I had read the reviews before booking.

I made the mistake of booking a single canoe rental before I had all my travel arrangements made. I asked within 24 hours to cancel, and they refused to refund my funds, and instead offered "credit." I live hundreds of miles away, and may never be in the area again, so the offer of credit is pointless. Inflexible, unfriendly customer service.

We went to the Fear Farm haunted attraction that they have in the fall and had a blast. Very different experience from other haunted houses in the area. You take a haunted hayride to the the cornfield and then back when you are down. Spent $20 and were there for well over an hour, mucj more bang for your buck than anywhere else.

Did a float trip on Meramec, it was enjoyable and all went well. When we first go in our raft it had dirt and mud in it already, they probably could wash these down after each trip. The float itself was fine. At the end where the take out was the staff could have been more helpful, there was a strong current and people were struggling to get their rafts into the right place, they could have had someone coming out in the water to help because I am not sure what happens if you float right by.

Good deal for the money and it's close to Babler SP where we are camping. The boys driving the van were friendly and competent. We did the 9 mile paddle departure at 9 am. The canoe was a bit banged up and filled with sand residue. We got life jackets only so bring cushions to sit on. The portajohns were clean and maintained. We left late because other customers needed a 3rd kayak and the boys had to go get that. so three stars not 4 because of the little details that were not quite up to par. Serviceable overall and would use them again.

Two Rivers Canoe Rental was Great. The people were friendly and really had it togather. Great Customer Service and Quality Rental equipment . Anita the Owner is really nice . They were genuinely happy that we had a nice two day canoe trip. Highest Recommendation for a happy camper.

Called Twin Rivers and made reservations about 4 days in advance of a Saturday float and they confirmed the reservations. When we arrived ahead of our reservation they were surprised by our reservation and then unapologetically told us they were sold out. When we asked more questions about why our reservations weren't available they told us we could take 3 canoes (instead of 4) and just jam extra people in. We agreed and then they tried to charge us for having "extra people" in the canoes. After we explained that this was their idea and also would affect our comfort they very rudely told us to take it or leave it and that they don't care if we float or not, that this was the situation. A little bit of customer service goes a long way. They lack any customer service and apparently any ability to actually hold a reservation. We didn't end up floating and their incompetence ruined our day.

Twin Rivers, also known as Float Eureka (from their website), was my first experience in floating. They tout themselves as the closest to the city, and I'm pretty sure they are. After a short trip to Eureka, we paid up (cash only), and got on their shuttle bus, where they drove us and the canoes to Pacific, to the river access. They got our canoe out, gave us a bag for garbage, and then we were on our own! The experience was enjoyable, though we ended up being on the river all day (they said it would be 5 hours if you just floated - well, it's much longer than that even if you do paddle). The prices seemed reasonable compared to other float trip spots - we paid $45 for a canoe rental on a Saturday - and it included the shuttle ride and drop off. After you get to the stopping point, it was kind of a longer walk back to your car, up a gravel road. Luckily, a nice family with a huge pickup truck was leaving the same time we were and gave us a ride. We had a good experience, and would definitely go here again - but would do the shorter (6 mile) float.

We booked a tubing excursion on a Thursday with the family of 5 ranging in ages of 15-52. We also ranged in abilities from first time on a river to well experienced floaters. Booking the event on-line was not difficult but would suggest a way to book the float tubes and the cooler tube at the same time, rather than having separate credit card transactions. The facilities at the farm were far better than expected, the tubes were great, and we were transported to the put in location in an air conditioned van. The float lasted about 3 and 1/2 hours and was for the most part enjoyable. There are a couple of ways it could have been improved. First was waiting for the trip to start. Our ride to put in was late for the time we booked, and then we waited even longer until he got everything ready. This would have been understandable if it had been a busy time. Again, it was a Thursday and we literally saw no one on the river the entire float. The other major issue we had was exiting the float. The take out point was right where the Meramec and Big River merge. We had great difficulty trying to cross, as it was extremely swift and deep. In everyone's opinion it was very dangerous, and we couldn't imagine doing the take out if we would have had smaller kids with us. Our biggest issue was that there was not a word of warning of how swift, deep, and dangerous it was there at the end. A suggestion of best exit route to safely cross would have been helpful.

Was super smooth and went just as planned! It was convenient that it was only a short drive and it was a great float. Highly recommend if you want an easy, non-stressful experience. Arrived, signed in, got on the bus to the drop off, floated, pulled out our raft, and left right away!

Photo of Diane B.

We had a great time tubing with Twin Rivers Canoe. Our tubes were clean as was our cooler carrier. Everything was on the bus to go when we got there for our 1030 arrival. The river was cool and the sun hot! They were there to pull us out at the end!

Photo of J R.

I have booked several float trips through the this company and it has been a nightmare almost every time. The first time, they did not have enough kayaks/rafts/etc. to fulfill our pre-booked reservation. The second time, I was told they didn't have my reservation at all. A few floats went smoothly until the 4th of July this year. I booked 7 inner tubes for my friends. I have always done the 4-5 mile float when I come here and mistakenly assumed that day would be like any other. The first time we heard the words "9 MILES" was on the bus on the way to the drop off point. It took us 8 hours to travel, what I can only assume was half way down the river. We were picked up by some very nice boaters and dropped and the end point. Our delayed travel time was NOT due to excessive stops, we only stopped twice along the beach for 10 minutes each and spent the remaining time trying to float along through water that was not moving. With no paddles. After sending an email to the owner about our experience, we received a response laying the blame squarely on our group. We were told that the drivers of the bus were told by OTHER guests that they wanted to try the 9 mile float and the bus drivers just "went with it". We were told, "Someone in your group must have told them that's what you wanted to do." No one in our group had a clue about the 9 mile option. There were no options provided on the website when we made our reservation, nor were we given a choice about floating distance when we arrived on site. Any floating company knows a 9 mile float never pairs well with inner tubes. We were also told in response that every other group was finished floating by 5:30pm and they couldn't understand "why you had such a problem", which was completely untrue. There was another group in distress at the stopping point because they could not find two of their tubers and the time was approaching 7pm. In addition, there were several other canoe and kayak renters out on the river at that time, trying to make their way to the end as quickly as possible. Moral of the (very long) story, this business is extremely unorganized. I always try to give the benefit of the doubt, but three disasters is a pattern, not coincidence. Sorry to say it because we really enjoyed the fact that it was so close to home. Bummer.

Photo of Tanya T.

Even if this is the last place available to float, DO NOT COME HERE. Made a reservation a week in advance for 4 canoes for our 9 person group and received confirmation of our reservation. When we arrived promptly on time the day of our float trip, the staff had no recollection of our reservation and made it clear that they were totally booked. When pressed further about the loss of our reservation they suddenly were able to provide us 3 canoes instead of the 4 we reserved. They recommended we do 3 canoes with 3 people to a canoe. We agreed. Shortly thereafter, they informed us we would have to pay extra for the 3rd person in each canoe even though we were forced into this situation due to their inability to keep track of their reservations. In other words, they wanted us to pay for their mistake. When we pointed out that we were forced into putting 3 people into a canoe due to their mistake, they rudely responded with "do you want to float or not, I don't care what you do." After losing our reservation, telling us they were totally booked, miraculously finding 3 open canoes, suggesting we could float 3 to a canoe, and then charging us for their mistake, we decided to scrap the whole trip. This place is an absolute joke of a business. We all make mistakes, but when you make mistakes AND you're rude, that's just voluntarily and purposefully providing terrible customer service. Stay away from this place.

The Best Float Trips in Missouri Near St. Louis

1. big river.

Float Trip St Louis

Distance from St. Louis: 45 minutes Distance from Kansas City: 4 hours Distance from Springfield: 4 hours

The Big River is one of the best rivers for a float trip in Missouri and one of the best for a float trip near St. Louis.

If you are looking to also do some hiking or exploring during your trip, look no further than the Big River. The Big River flows right through the banks of Washington State Park, Twin River Park, Cedar Hill Park, and St. Francois State Park.

The Big River is one of the best float trips near St. Louis since it can be done as a day trip. The slow-moving waters also make it one of the best family-friendly float trips in Missouri.

Because there are only two outfitters that rent out floating equipment, Washington State Park & Cherokee Landing, this river is more on the quiet side (especially during the week) which makes a Big River float trip the quieter float trip Missouri has to offer.

Where To Rent:  Cherokee Landing

Cherokee Landing has outstanding customer service and great prices on its float trip rental equipment. The staff is very accommodating and will help you if you have any questions.

Where To Camp:  Washington State Park

Washington State Park is a great park for setting up a tent or bringing your camper to enjoy a weekend of camping. The campground itself is small, but the sites are spaced out and well-kept. You can also rent floating equipment from the concession store.

Where To Stay:  Gorgeous Historical Farmhouse

This  beautiful historic farmhouse  is a great place to stay with your family or a group. It’s only minutes away from St. Francois State Park which has two places to launch kayaks or canoes from. This house can sleep 12 people comfortably and has two full kitchens! The house was built in 1832 but has recently been updated. Although, the owners still kept the historical charm alive in the update.

Float the Kings River in Eureka Springs Arkansas

With easy floating and the option for Class III rapids, this Arkansas river is called Kings River for a reason.

By Vivian Wheeler

Canoe or float down Kings River in Arkansas

Located just 15 miles from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the Kings River is one of the few remaining free-flowing rivers in the country. With its headwaters arising in the Boston Mountain of the Ozark National Forest, the Kings runs north 90 miles until it empties into Table Rock Lake at the Missouri state line. On the Kings River, you’ll see soaring rock bluffs, sloping gravel bars, crystal clear pools and shady forested banks. Luckily, these sites should be around for generations to come, as the Nature Conservancy has established a 5,000 plus-acre preserve, which includes 10 miles of frontage on the Kings River.

Paddlers typically divide the Kings River into two sections. There’s an upper section of the river that spans 11 miles, which is a Class III whitewater stream and includes a waterfall at the Kings River Natural Area. The lower Kings River runs for 82.5 miles and is a relatively gentle Class I stream. One of the river’s most popular floats in the lower portion is the stretch from Rockhouse to Trigger Gap. Clocking in at 8 miles, this stretch runs through land owned by the Arkansas Nature Conservancy , and you’ll find interesting rock features, gravel bars and plenty of deep swimming holes along the way. Toward the end of your float, you’ll cross through a low-water bridge that can be a bit swift at times. Go right down the middle of the bridge.

If you’re looking to make a weekend trip out of it, there’s a lot to do in the area. Eureka Springs offers great restaurants and window shopping. Stop by Chelsea’s Corner Cafe and Bar for homemade pizza and live music, or swing by the Rowdy Beaver for a beer. If you have the time, make the hour and 15–minute trip south to the Kings River Falls, which is one of the best swimming holes in the Ozarks .
