Himalaya Treks & Tours

Get away from the main trails and closer to genuine cultural encounters | Lachlan Gardiner

The Himalaya is the world’s mightiest mountain system, containing nine of Earth’s ten highest peaks and stretching more than 2,500kms across India, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and Pakistan. Long associated with great adventurers and mountaineers, this is a place like no other: remote, majestic and romantic.

Head to Nepal’s Annapurna region for a classic trek through lush foothills and Hindu villages, walk among rhododendron forests, fluttering prayer flags and iconic peaks on the Everest Base Camp Trek, or join our challenging Bhutan Snowman Trek, ranked as one of the greatest treks in the Himalaya.

Cycle along some of the world’s highest roads, discovering ancient cities alive with bustling markets and sacred monasteries; or be one of the few to traverse the Great Himalaya Trail—the world's longest and highest walking track.

From exciting family adventures to technical climbs on some of the world’s most challenging peaks, our pioneering treks are designed to get you deep into the heart of the Himalaya. Join us as we explore the iconic treks and remote trails of this unforgettable region!

Leaders in Responsible Travel

Responsible Travel practice is at the heart of every program that we offer in the Himalaya. World Expeditions have pioneered many unique philanthropic initiatives that benefit our staff, local communities and the environment. When you book one of our adventures you’re supporting a program that is committed to safety and sustainability.

Stay at our exclusive semi-permanent camps in Nepal

Four decades of feedback and experience has proven that camping provides the most authentic trekking experience. Across the Annapurna and Everest regions you’ll enjoy the extra comfort of our exclusive camps, which feature standing height tents, clean beds with mattresses and pillows, a heated dining room, composting sit down toilets and more. Do yourself and the environment a favour by choosing our minimal impact accommodations.

All meals on Nepal treks included

Did you know that meals on a 2 week tea-house based trek in Nepal could cost you in excess of US$800pp?! Value for money, peace of mind, looking after your health as well as the local landscapes are just some of the reasons why we believe it’s a wise decision to choose a Nepal trek with all meals included. Watch our ‘7 Reasons Why We Include Meals On Our Nepal Treks’ video on every Nepal trip page to learn even more.

World Firsts

We proudly pioneered the first ever trekking trip to Tibet (1991), and developed trails in Nepal and the Indian Himalaya that had never before been used commercially, including the Api Himal and a traverse from Kashmir to Ladakh through Zanskar (1983). We also piloted the first commercial opportunity to walk The Great Himalaya Trail (2010) linking the high passes from Nepal’s most eastern to western borders.

Innovative Active Itineraries

We’ve been organising treks, climbs and tours in the Himalaya for four decades. Our firsthand knowledge of the region is unmatched, and we continue to push the envelope each year by innovating new programs while also finessing our classics. From a short four-day family trek in the Annapurna region to a challenging mountain bike traverse from Tibet to Nepal, we’re sure to have something for every age, interest and fitness level.

Great Value, Highly Inclusive

On top of all meals, highly trained local guides, an experienced trekking and cooking crew and exceptional camping services, we also provide you with the use of a trek pack, which includes a quality sleeping bag, down or fibre fill jacket and insulated mat (valued at over US$500).

Expert Guides

Our guides in the field are the real keys to our success, making your experiences exceptional. From Tim Macartney-Snape, who with Greg Mortimer completed the first Australian summit of Mount Everest, to Bir Singh, one of Nepal’s most experienced guides—our leaders are the pillars of our Himalayan adventures.

Stay at our comfortable semi-permanent campsites in Nepal's Everest region&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Mark Tipple</i>

The countries of Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim and India present some of the world's poorest living conditions. According to the United Nations 2010 Human Development Report "environmental degradation intensifies inequality through adverse impacts on already disadvantaged people and inequalities in human development amplify environmental degradation". World Expeditions chooses to make a difference by putting in place initiatives that reduce our impact and giving back to the places and people we encounter. To minimise our impact on the natural environment we practice the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', in addition to supporting local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct, Child Welfare Code of Conduct and Porter Welfare Policy ensure the well-being of animals and children encountered on our adventures, as well as the mountain porters we employ on our treks.

Private eco campsites

In the Everest and Annapurna regions, our sustainable private campsites feature standing room, fixed two person tents equipped with raised beds, mattresses and pillows. Dining rooms offer a comfortable environment to dine and socialise with fellow trekkers, with cushioned seating, picture windows with mountain views and, at higher altitudes, a pot belly stove for warmth. Ablution blocks have western style sit toilets and wash basins.

Wilderness camping

Enjoy our fully supported, self-sufficient camping featuring quality two person tents with good ventilation that have been erected in scenic wilderness settings as well as a dining tent and a toilet tent with a sit toilet. Our crew take care of the logistics, including food preparation, as we focus on keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum.

In the Annapurna and Everest regions we have specially appointed eco lodges which adhere to our very specific criteria of not burning wood and follow our menu and hygiene guidelines.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3-4 star properties that are generally centrally located, atmospheric, and where we have seen a very high traveller satisfaction over many years.

His achievements include multiple ascents of Everest, Lhotse and Manaslu, five Australian first ascents and establishment of many new routes.

excursion al himalaya

Jon has been at the cutting edge of world adventure for 33 years. Jon reached the summit of Everest alone and completed first ascents of extreme new routes in the Himalaya. An accomplished polar explorer, Jon was the first Australian to trek to both poles with Eric Philips. The culmination of Jon’s dedication to adventure was his unsupported traverse of Australia in 2001, where he completed the first unsupported walk to the geographic centre of Australia.

excursion al himalaya

In more recent times, Kate has turned her focus to cycling in Antarctica. When not trailblazing cycle routes and raising vital funds for many worthy organisations, Kate is a professional real tennis player.

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

This was an awesome trip. Even if you’ve seen pictures of the Everest mountain range, up close and personal, it’s breathtaking!! Pictures can’t do them justice—a land of giants. The itinerary is incredibly well thought through—WT has this down pat through years of tuning and feedback.
The trip was masterfully designed. We had an absolute ball. Nepal is a beautiful country with wonderful people. The memories we took home will be cherished for a long time to come.
A wonderful trip! So much more than a chance to catch a photo of a snow leopard or tiger, this was the rare opportunity to really learn about these two cats, their environments, and the ongoing conservation efforts being made to save them.
Hiking to a local farm and meeting the family was a lovely experience, and attending the Paro festival was magical in its own way, adding to the sense of connecting more deeply with this country. The King happened to be there on our second day and mingling with the people, which was a learning experience in its own right.
The Trip Leader had great knowledge of the Everest region and strong relationships with the Sherpa people. This was a life-changing trip of a lifetime! The all-time best trip ever!
This is a great trip. I have the tremendous satisfaction of having completed a difficult physical trek as well as experiencing beautiful scenery and an interesting culture.
Because of our Trip Leader’s vast experience in the area, we used several trails that aren’t known to many trekkers and we were invited into Sherpa homes, which was wonderful. I had been dreaming of this trip for 30 years and now those dreams are fulfilled.
One of the best trips of my life: unbelievable scenery, wonderful organization, smoothly run. I had pretty high expectations going in, but it ended up even better than I’d hoped.

I’ve been with lots of organisations in the past doing the seven summits, but I go with what I trust and what I know. I would never go back to the Himalaya with any organisation other than Himalayan Experience. I also know that the other operations respect Russell and his company hugely – and that says a lot in itself.”

How to plan your dream trip to the Himalayas

Stunning view of the Himalaya mountains (Cholatse and Taboche to the left), Ngozumpa glacier, and Gokyo lakes (the world's highest freshwater lakes, sacred for both Hindus and Buddhists), as seen on top of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), near the village of Gokyo, in Sagarmatha National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site in Khumbu region, Solukhumbu district, eastern Nepal, Asia.

For mountain lovers and the vertically inclined the Himalayas represent nothing less than the crowning apex of nature's grandeur. Here dramatic forested gorges rise to skylines of snow-capped glaciated peaks through a landscape that ranges from high-altitude desert to dripping rhododendron forest.

Home to some 50 million people, this is no alpine wilderness, but rather a vibrant mosaic of peoples, cultures and communities, criss-crossed by ancient trading and pilgrimage routes that offer their own unique inspiration. Test your mettle against some of the world's most audacious and dangerous roads, or set a more measured pace on a trek through yak pastures to prayer flag-strewn passes haunted by snow leopards and red pandas. Stretching in a 1550 mile-long arc (2500km) across Asia from Kashmir to Kathmandu , Lhasa to Ladakh , the Himalayan range is a big place. Focus your pilgrimage on one of these dream trips.

Brightly colored prayer flags flutter in the breeze beside a bright, clear lake surrounded by sandy colored hills

Ladakh – India's little Tibet

Hidden over high passes in an arid, largely treeless rain shadow, Ladakh is classic Trans Himalayan scenery: huge khaki-colored valleys and harsh rock walls brought alive by the occasional splash of irrigated green. Traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture remains intact here, with spectacularly located monasteries that burst into life during medieval masked dance festivals that have changed little in 500 years. Travelers should expect epic treks, sparkling high-altitude mountain lakes, and a well developed infrastructure with inexpensive guesthouses around the capital, Leh .

When to go: June to September.

Getting there: Daily flights from Delhi to Leh, or take the spectacular seasonal high roads over the Himalayas from Manali or Srinigar .

Suggested itinerary: Hire a jeep or an Enfield motorbike and drive out to ancient Hemis , Lamayuru and Thiksey monasteries, taking a side trip to the turquoise lake of Pangong Tso bordering Tibet ; afterwards, do a five-day homestay trek through the Markha Valley.

Off the beaten track alternative: Spiti , in neighboring Himachal Pradesh , has the same dramatic mountain scenery and monasteries but without the crowds. Trek from village to village with a local organization and overnight at the incredible monasteries of Dhankar and Tabo .

Tibet – roof of the world

The high Tibetan plateau is the rooftop of Asia, hidden from the Indian subcontinent behind the ramparts of the Great Himalaya. Despite Chinese-led modernization, Tibet 's great monasteries still hum with murmured mantras and the flicker of yak butter lamps. Sublime landscapes, ranging from rolling grasslands to high-altitude turquoise lakes, a vibrant Buddhist culture and the friendly and resilient Tibetan people are the highlights here, as are the views of Everest's North Face – miles better than anything you'll see in Nepal.

When to go: Mid-May to September.

Getting there: Flights to Lhasa from  Chengdu , Beijing and many other cities in China , or take the world's highest train from China to Lhasa.

Suggested itinerary: Join a tour for the seven- to ten-day overland trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu, stopping at the incredible multistory stupa (structure containing Buddhist relics) at Gyantse and the spectacular medieval monastery at Sakya.

Off the beaten track alternative:  Complete a rugged three-day trek around Asia's most sacred peak, Mt Kailash , in remote Western Tibet, and then visit the incredible Kashmiri-influenced art of Tsaparang and the Guge Kingdom, hidden deep in the weirdly eroded desert gorges of the Sutlej Valley. Paved roads and an airport outside Ali make the two-week trip much less arduous than it used to be, though you still have to hire transport and a guide through an agency in Lhasa or Kathmandu.

Nepal – a trekker's paradise

The best way to experience the mountains is on foot, and Himalayan treks just don't get any more spectacular or convenient than in Nepal . Follow mountain paths past lines of spinning prayer wheels and charming stone Sherpa or Tamang villages to the foot of jaw-dropping 8000m peaks like Annapurna or Everest, safe in the knowledge that at the end of the day you’re guaranteed a cozy bed and hot dinner. Add on a visit to the medieval cities of the Kathmandu Valley , once a Himalayan artistic powerhouse.

When to go: March, April, October, November.

Getting there: Fly to Kathmandu and hop on a domestic flight to Lukla for the Everest region. Pokhara is the launch pad for treks in the Annapurna region.

Suggested itinerary: To trek to Everest Base Camp you need a minimum of 14 days, but we recommend adding on a four day side visit to the stunning mountain lakes of the Gokyo valley. Factor in ample time to acclimatize.

Off the beaten track alternative: The 17-day walk around Manaslu is possibly Nepal's greatest teahouse trek (you stay in lodges along the way), or go camping expedition-style on an epic three-week trip to the Dolpo or Kanchenjunga regions.

Colorful prayer flags flutter in the breeze. A white monastery structure, built into the side of the mountain, is in the background

Bhutan – the last Shangri-la

As the last surviving great Himalayan kingdom, Bhutan has an otherworldly air that seems rooted in another age. Traditional dress is the norm everywhere, old-growth forest carpets the majority of the countryside and remote Himalayan peoples like the Layaps and Brokpas live a life largely untouched by the modern age. Simply put, Bhutan is like nowhere on earth. The catch? The fixed minimum daily rate of US$250 per person is mandatory, although this does include transport, meals, guide and accommodation.

When to go: March, April, September, October.

Getting there: Fly to Paro from Delhi or Bangkok, or drive overland from neighboring India.

Suggested itinerary: Explore the delightful Paro Valley and its iconic Tiger's Nest Hermitage  (Taktshang Goemba) before driving to the little-visited Haa Valley, the tiny capital of Thimphu and the sensual fortress-monastery of Punakha. Schedule your visit around one of Bhutan's colorful tsechus (monastic festivals).

Off the beaten track alternative: The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Mustang in Nepal also comes with a hefty daily permit cost (US$500 per person), though you'll get a chance to explore centuries-old Tibetan architecture and may even gain an audience with the king.

Climbing and Mountaineering Expeditions in Nepal

Embarking on a guided climb in the Himalaya mountains provides opportunities for all abilities, from the seasoned trekker to the extreme mountaineer. Have a look at our range of Himalayan peaks to climb and enjoy, which are all professionally guided and organised. With such a varied feast of Himalayan mountains to climb, we have chosen a few of the favourites as guided trips which will enable you to experience the joy of climbing in this part of the world.

Mount Everest is in the high Khumbu right on the border with Tibet and we offer expeditions for small groups of experienced climbers to ascend the South East ridge. We also can provide logistics for private expeditions. Climbing the Himalayas with a climbing expedition is the challenge of a lifetime.

In the 6000m range of so-called 'trekking peaks' (this is an administrative allocation based on royalty fees, and has no association with the technicality of the climb) we offer such iconic mountains as Island Peak (also known as Imja Tse) , which was a training peak used by Hillary and Tenzing in 1953, Mera Peak in the Barun Conservation area, Yala Peak at the top end of the Langtang Valley, and Parcharmo Peak in the Rolwaling district . Some expeditions cover multiple peaks and passes that include more technical crossings over the Amphu Lapcha Pass and the easier Kongma La.

The most popular region to climb peaks is in the Khumbu Region. This area includes the famous Sagarmatha National Park. Here you will find Island Peak, Pokalde, Kongma Tse, and Everest herself. This region is home to four 8,000m peaks. From here you reach Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, as well as Everest. One of the most iconic mountains in the region is Ama Dablam. At 6,812m high it certainly makes a mark on the skyline. It’s unique knobby summit makes it easy to spot while trekking or climbing.

Many people train for several years to tackle the tallest mountain in the world. By the end of the 2017 season 4,469 different people have summited Mt Everest, the appeal of standing on the highest point on earth is a life-long accomplishment for many mountaineers. However, it is the opposite of a walk in the park. In order to climb this mountain, you need plenty of experience under your belt.

Guided Beginner Peaks in the Himalayas

However, if an 8,000m peak is a bit much for you, this region is a playground for those looking to get their feet wet with high-altitude mountaineering. Island Peak is a classic peak for those looking to summit a Himalayan beauty. Climb along a knife edge ridge line while taking in all of the gravity-defying peaks around you. Island Peak has the added benefit of following the Everest Base Camp Trail for the approach. This route seems like a walking highway compared to many of the trekking and climbing routes in the region. Yet, at the same time there is something magical about walking in the footsteps of famous mountaineers and Sherpas.

Another great option for beginners is to climb Mera Peak . Although not located in the Khumbu Region, it is just to the east in Makalu Barun National Park and offers many stunning views of the great Himalayan mountains. Furthermore, Mera Peak is the highest of Nepal’s “trekking peaks.” Climbing Mera Peak also means that you will be in a more remote area than Island Peak. The hustle and bustle of the Everest Base Camp route quickly fades away as soon as you leave Lukla.

A splendid day on the descent of Mera Peak with a fantastically clear view of the surrounding mountains.

Himalayan Climbing Treks in the Langtang Region

There are several other areas prime for mountain climbing aside from the Khumbu. One area is the famous Langtang region. Lying just north of Kathmandu, the peaks in this region are bit more accessible than those in the Khumbu. Don’t be fooled by its proximity to the country’s capital. This region is well-known for its fantastic wildlife. Home to the Himalayan black bear, Tahr, monkeys and the rare red panda. There have even been reports of Yeti sightings.

Langtang is home to Yala Peak , an easier trekking peak in the Himalaya. Yala Peak boasts fantastic views of Shishapangma, Dorje Lakpa, Ganchenpo, and many more. It can be climbed in two days, albeit is still a strenuous climb. However, it’s a great way to stand on the top of a Himalayan mountain while being a non-technical peak.

Guided Treks to the Annapurna Region

The Annapurna sub-range, or Annapurna region as it’s known by travelers, also offers excellent mountain climbing. Annapurna is the 10th highest mountain in the world. At 8,091m it just barely climbs into the death zone. But don’t be fooled, out of all of the 8,000m peaks, Annapurna battles it out as being one of the toughest climbs in the world.

Manaslu hangs out about 40 miles from Annapurna. This beauty is another 8,000m peak and the 8 th tallest mountain in the world. Meaning “mountain of the spirit” this mighty giant has a striking massif with seemingly two peaks if viewed from the right angle. In 1974 the first female team to summit an 8,000m peak reached the top of Manaslu which marked an historic event for female mountaineers. Since the first person to summit the mountain was Japanese, there is a great pride between the Japanese people and Manaslu.

Experience Required to Go on a Guided Climb in the Himalayas

Almost all of the peaks in Nepal require a basic understanding of snow travel. Familiarity with an ice axe and crampons are a must for most mountains. However, you can be trained with the gear while on the expedition for peaks such as Mera Peak or Island Peak. Understanding and familiarizing yourself with your gear, especially footwear , prior to a climb is paramount to your success.

Each climb has a list of gear required for your expedition. Understanding how to use this gear and field testing it prior to bringing it to the Himalaya is extremely important. You want to be as comfortable as possible during your trip, so knowing and understanding how to properly fit your pack, put on your crampons, select the proper sleeping bag or even use a water filter will help aid in the comfort of your journey. Try purchasing gear at shops that have a good return policy. Several gear shops will allow you to purchase gear and return it if it isn’t quite what you are looking for.

With the right gear and appropriate climb selected for your skill level, the next thing to concentrate on is physical fitness. Climbing a mountain is never easy. Add in the high altitude of the Himalayan peaks and even the “easier” climbs become quite tough. If it is at all possible, understand how your body behaves at altitude . Everyone is different. Knowing if you tend to have an upset stomach, headache, feel dizzy, or feel lethargic is helpful while you are climbing. That way, when you do begin to feel the effects of altitude you remain calm, stop, rest, and tell your guide what is up.

Preparation for a Himalayan Climbing Expedition

Here at Adventure Alternative we do everything in our power to properly acclimatize , however there are a few things you will need to do to take care of yourself while climbing. Always stay properly hydrated. Drink significantly more than you need. After you pass 3000m you will want to drink about double your normal water intake. Force yourself to eat at every meal, even if you don’t feel hungry. Altitude suppresses appetite, but you need fuel to climb. A handy trick is to bring your favorite treat from home (as long as it isn’t cow, cows are sacred in Nepal). It’s a great way to motivate yourself to eat, and also a neat way to share your home culture with others.

Lastly, prepare your mind for the task at hand. Climbing a mountain is just as much as a mental task as it is physical. Instead of focusing on the entirety of the climb, focus on one small segment. Whether that be what it is you need to accomplish that day, or even a point just 10m in front of you can really help. Understand your own limitations and remember everything you come up, you must also descend.

Another great trick is to sleep lower than the highest point you have walked to. Most villages in the Himalaya are built into a hillside, with a trail going to the top of the nearest hill. It’s always a good idea to rest after you have made it to your destination for the day, then venture out again and try to climb higher. Then return down low to sleep. When doing extreme high altitude, such as an Everest expedition, there will be plenty of opportunity to go on acclimatization hikes or sleep at a high camp and then return to a lower one the next day.

Experience the Culture of the Himalaya

One of the best parts about being in the Himalaya is enjoying the company of the Sherpa people. With their own language, culture , cuisine, and lifestyle, these hearty mountain folks are some of the most welcoming ethnic groups in the world. Mostly residing in Nepal and Bhutan, this ancient culture was once nomadic, traveling the Himalayan mountains between Nepal and Tibet. Today, most Sherpas have a home village, although it is not uncommon to see them live in the high alpine environment for the tourist and climbing season, then head to warmer temperatures in the lower mountains over winter.

The most famous Sherpa village is arguably its oldest, Tengboche in the Khumbu Region. The Sherpa people are primarily Buddhist and Tengboche is home to one of the world’s highest monasteries. Mostly known for their incredible mountaineering skills, Sherpa believe in community and a harmonious existence with the land. Furthermore, their architecture is quite stunning, especially when you realize that everything is brought in by beast of burden or on foot. Most buildings are made of stone and have ornately painted windows, with special attention to colorful details.

The valleys throughout the Nepalese Himalaya are well trodden and the approach routes to these peaks have many villages where you can enjoy local hospitality and buy stores. Nowadays mountain tourism has made its mark though, and it is important to tread lightly in these fragile environments. Waste management is a problem in the Himalayas, and it is up to the visitors to set a good example . Our trips support local initiatives like porters’ rest stations, plus we have helped to fund clinics and monasteries and schools in the solu Khumbu.

A visit to Nepal to climb the Himalayas is a rite of passage for any climber or even trekker, and our trips offer first class guiding and support with an emphasis on sustainable growth in the region.

Luxury Holiday in the Himalayas

The mighty Himalayas, famous for its hill stations, trekking, and spiritual passages, is the world’s highest mountain range, which fringes the north of India in a sweeping 1,500-mile-long arc. At hill stations like  Manali  and  Shimla , wake up to panoramas of towering snow-capped peaks and craggy cliffs.

Besides scenic vistas, the Himalayas are spiritually and culturally enriching. Devotional songs rent the air as worshipers, at Hindu pilgrimage sites on the banks of the holy river  Ganges , sing and pray each evening.

Tibetan Buddhism too has deep roots in the Himalayas. Buddhist chants and ritual horns announce the start of prayers in  McLeod Ganj , home of the Dalai Lama. In the high-altitude desert of  Ladakh , daily life and spiritual activity at monasteries carry on, unchanged for centuries. With mountains this high, there’s plenty of opportunity for soft adventure:  hiking  trails,  trekking  routes,  white-water rafting .

The Himalayas are breathtaking and soul-stirring, but also vast and complex. Let an Enchanting Travels consultant become your mountain guide, building you the perfect itinerary through this awe-inspiring landscape.

¡Gracias especialmente a Uttam!

North india himalayan mountains itinerary & backpacking route.

excursion al himalaya

Northern India and the Himalayan mountains are one of my favourite places to visit in India . With lush mountain scenery, colourful monasteries, spiritual places and a unique energy, there’s something really magical about the Himalayas.

However, the mountains of north India often get skipped as people travel around the hectic north India cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur that make up the famous Golden Triangle route. While this route is home to some of India’s most iconic sights, like the Taj Mahal , it’s a shame to miss the Himalayan mountains as they offer a much cooler and calmer Indian experience.

So I want to share my North India Himalayan mountains itinerary and backpacking route to help you if you’re thinking of exploring this beautiful and fascinating part of India.

excursion al himalaya

The Himalayan Mountains of North India

The western Himalayan mountain region of India includes several Indian states, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. In the east you have Sikkim and the Himalayan kingdom in Nepal sits somewhere in the middle.

These states are what this north India itinerary focuses on but it also includes the holy city of Amritsar in Punjab, home to the Sikh’s Golden Temple, and India’s capital city Delhi as most travellers will enter India here.

excursion al himalaya

The Himalayas are some of the most diverse areas of the country in terms of landscape. When you leave the busy cities in the plains of North India you’ll find lush green hill stations and tea plantations, the spectacular snow capped mountains of the Himalayas, tons of trekking opportunities, and spiritual mountain towns like  Rishikesh and Dharamshala and witness a way of living that is very different to the rest of India.

You’ll love backpacking in the Himalayas if you’re an adventurer looking to trek through the mountains, someone who is seeking spiritual enlightenment, or even if you just want to escape the heat and chaos of India’s big cities!

Carry on reading and I’ll describe the best route to take and give you plenty of tips for traveling in India.

Essential Info for Traveling North India

Budget:  From $25/day. See more detail in the average costs for backpacking India .

When to go: The best time to visit the majority of India is during the cool, winter months (between November and March) but during this time its very cold and even snowy in the mountains and higher mountain passes in Ladakh are blocked.

The best time to travel in the north Indian mountains and Himalayas is during the summer months of April, May and June when the rest of the country is boiling hot the mountains make for a refreshing escape. But be aware that cities at lower elevations, like Delhi and Amritsar, can be very hot at this time so just spend a few days seeing the sights and then run for the hills!

Due to the variety of climates in this itinerary the best time to visit is during October and November or February to early April when you’ll get warm days and pleasant weather without it being too hot or too cold.

During the monsoon (July – September) these mountainous regions of India can receive very heavy rain. There is also the risk of landslides and flooding so it’s not the best time to go, but October and November time, just after monsoon before winter sets in, should be ok.

Visas:   Nearly all visitors need a visa to visit India. Most nationalities can get an E Visa ( see here for more info )

Getting around: Trains, buses, and flights in India connect to every part of the entire country. While trains are usually the best way to travel around India there are limited lines in the mountains, so buses will usually be your best option.

Luxury tourist buses are much more comfortable and convenient than the cheap and slow local buses. You can book trains and buses in India online easily at 12 Go Asia.

There are also a number of airports near the most popular mountain destinations which offer an alternative to buses if you get travel sick from winding mountains roads.

Accommodation:   You’ll find anything from tents and backpacker hostels to luxury 5 star resorts in the mountains. Hostels tend to cost $4-6/night, while hotels can cost anywhere from $50+. I’ve recommended accommodation for all budgets in this North India mountains and Himalayas itinerary. You can find accommodation, check photos and reviews and book on Booking.com

Tours:  Taking a trip planned by India Someday is one of the best ways to see the country without having to worry about booking accommodation or transport. They’ll handle all of the hassle, and you’ll have all of the freedom you want in each city! If you’d prefer to take a guided group tour I recommend the 13 days Mountains and Mystics tour by Intrepid Travel.

Traveling with India Someday Trip Planners

I’ve recently spent 12 days traveling around the mountains of northern India and my trip was planned and organised by an awesome company called India Someday . They organized a fun itinerary that took me to Manali, Dharamashala, Amritsar, Rishikesh, and Delhi.

It was so nice not having to worry about booking any accommodation or transportation, since India Someday handled all of that.

They sent me an easy to read chart, which had all of the destinations, accommodation, and transportation laid out in front of me. If I ever needed to contact them via WhatsApp or email, they were quick to respond.

I had an awesome combination of buses and trains, and loved staying in both spiritual mountain towns and bustling cities. I had ample free time in each city and felt I was really able to explore each place as much as I wanted to.

Even though I was a solo female traveller everything went smoothly, it was so nice having everything already booked for me and being able to enjoy each place without the hassle of planning and knowing I had a contact to help me out incase I had any difficulties. If you’d like support for planning your trip to India but still want to the freedom to travel independently instead of a on a group tour then India Someday are ideal.

Check out my review of traveling around the Indian mountains with India Someday and Anna’s review of traveling around North India and Madhya Pradesh with India Someday.

Dubai’s Extraordinary Flooding: Here’s What to Know

Images of a saturated desert metropolis startled the world, prompting talk of cloud seeding, climate change and designing cities for intensified weather.

  • Share full article

A dozen or so cars, buses and trucks sit in axle-deep water on a wide, flooded highway.

By Raymond Zhong

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions have stunned the world this week. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a freak event — forecasters anticipated the storms several days out and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual. Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on Tuesday was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . But parts of the nation had experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms just last month.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every corner of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried across the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this week’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets this week that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times on Thursday, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t immediately have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.
