Once a ship hits international waters, try your luck at poker, blackjack, roulette and more.

Destination by Season

Not sure what time of year is best for a cruise? Here are some helpful tips to get you started.

If you enjoy the warm hues of autumn foliage, consider a Northern Hemisphere September or October cruise to the east coasts of the United States and Canada. This is also a great time to sail to Europe, when you can beat the crowds and enjoy more moderate temperatures than in the warmer summer months. You'll also find less expensive sailings this time of year.

Exchange cold weather for some sun! Winter is a popular time to cruise to the South Pacific, Hawaii or even the Bahamas, Mexico and other Caribbean destinations. Remember, our winter is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, so Alaska attracts a high concentration of travellers in the summer months, but it's also a popular time to enjoy Europe's sights. And don't forget the kids! European summer is a great time to get the whole family together.

Spring is a great time to visit the Mediterranean. For Alaska, try late spring – an affordable time to go, as it's right before high season, when prices can go up.

Our Christmas/summer holidays are a great time to get the whole family together. Beach destinations, such as the South Pacific and Hawaii, are always a hit with the kids, too. Or, for something different, experience a traditional European Christmas-market river cruise.

Booking Your Cruise

  • Inside cabins are generally the smallest cabins onboard and have no views, but are a good option if you are on a tight budget.
  • Oceanview cabins include windows or portholes and provide a view of ports visited.
  • Balcony cabins feature an ocean-facing balcony that offers a space to relax that is all your own.
  • Suites are the largest cabins on board. They have windows and usually balconies, and offer the most amenities and space, often including exclusive butler or concierge service, and other special amenities.

Booking a Guaranteed Cabin quickly and easily secures a cabin in your selected category, but your exact room will not be assigned until the time of ship check-in. (Final cabin location, including deck, is at the total discretion of the cruise line.)

Booking a Guaranteed Cabin, in many instances, means a greater chance of receiving a complimentary upgrade to a higher cabin category close to sail date.

Changing or Cancelling Your Cruise

Most cruise lines allow you to cancel your cruise without a fee when done at least 91 days before departure. However, giving shorter notice will likely result in extra fees. Cruise cancellation fees increase the closer to the departure date that a cancellation is made. Consult the cruise line's rules and regulations during booking for their specific cancellation fees and policies. You may also want to consider Cruise Travel Protection, specific travel insurances which can reimburse you for cancellation penalties in case of medical emergencies.

Whether or not to purchase comprehensive travel insurance is an individual decision. However, it is highly recommended in case illness or injury keeps you from traveling. If you need to cancel your trip because you, your immediate family, or your travel companion is too sick to travel, you will be reimbursed for your original trip cost. Some cruise insurers can also help you find a doctor or hospital in case of medical emergencies and can reimburse you for eligible medical expenses.

If you purchase comprehensive travel insurance and must cancel your cruise for a covered reason, you will be reimbursed for the cancellation penalty. The cost of the plan is non-refundable. Please be sure to read the summary of coverage for terms, conditions and plan sponsors.

Some Adventure Cruise operator’s require the purchase of comprehensive travel insurance as a requirement before boarding. Please check with your cruise consultant.

You may be able to add another passenger, depending on the cabin's passenger capacity and the point at which you decide to add the passenger; however, there is no guarantee that an extra person can be added, or that the price will stay the same. If you would like to add another passenger, please call your Expedia Cruise Specialist.

Cruise lines may not let you change a passenger's name, or sometimes even that name's spelling, after you complete your reservation, without charging a fee. Changes like these can be costly, so please be absolutely certain that all passengers' names/details (i.e. date-of-birth, nationality etc.) are listed exactly as they appear on their proof of citizenship (passports or government-issued photo IDs and birth certificates). Particular attention needs to be paid by honeymooners who may wish to travel on their new married name but still only have a passport in their previous family name.

Payment/Receipt

If your cruise departs more than 100 days in the future, you can usually choose to book with only a deposit. If you choose to make a deposit, your confirmation email will provide your final payment due date.

After you book your cruise, you will receive a confirmation email that will let you know when your final payment is due and how to pay. You may also call a Cruise Specialist to make your final payment. Keep in mind that if you are not paid in full by the final due date, the cruise line can cancel your reservation and will not refund you for any payments you've already made.

If your payment card is not accepted, verify that you entered the card number, expiration date, and billing address correctly. If you are still having trouble, call your credit card company to make sure you haven't exceeded any daily credit limits. If your card is still not accepted, please call a Cruise Specialist for assistance.

Registration and Documents

After booking, you will receive a confirmation email from Expedia. If you only made a deposit while booking, the confirmation email will provide the final payment due date. Once you receive your confirmation, be sure to register online with the cruise line to view your itinerary, book shore excursions, and complete important paperwork that will speed up the embarkation process. You will receive your cruise documents and information (usually in email form) from Expedia prior to your sail date.

If you have booked a last-minute cruise, we recommend that you call a Cruise Specialist for specific details.

With Expedia, you can book a cruise up to 24 months in advance. By booking this early, you can find great cruise deals and get the cabin and sailing date of your choice.

Life Onboard

  • Documents : Be sure to pack your passport and travel documents.
  • Electronics : For items requiring electrical-outlet usage, such as hair dryers or mobile phone chargers, note that some ships/cabins are equipped with US standard 110-volt outlets only, while other ships/cabins are equipped with European standard 220-volt outlets. Many Australian based ships will be equipped with Australian standard 240-volt outlets. We recommend you bring a multi-adapter.
  • Everyday Clothing : Pack with both your destination's climate and the cruise ship's dress code in mind. For Alaska, bring protective rain coverings. For the Caribbean or Pacific Islands, bring plenty of light, airy clothing and sunscreen.
  • Formal Clothing : If your ship has formal nights, men should bring a dark suit or tuxedo, and women should bring cocktail attire. If you don't own these items, that's still OK; most ships have casual dining venues, and some ships also have formal wear rental shops.
  • Forbidden Items : The following items are not permitted on board: firearms, weapons of any kind, irons, candles, explosives and animals (except service animals with permission from the cruise line).

Many ships recommend tipping (gratuities) around $10 to $15 per person, per day, and many cruise lines automatically include the amount in the fare when booking. Other cruise lines automatically charge tips to your shipboard account (guests have the option to adjust this charge at the front desk). You may also have the option to pay cash directly to the staff member. Check with your cruise specialist for details on your cruise’s tipping/gratuity options.

  • Internet : Most ships have internet access (for a fee), including internet cafés, access from your cabin, or ship-wide wireless (wi-fi). Remember, internet access at sea is not going to be as fast or reliable as land connections, and therefore may not be available at all times. For a faster connection, use the internet at night or in port when other guests are ashore. For more details, check out the ship features on your cruise line's website.
  • Telephone : Most cabins offer telephones. If your cabin does not have a telephone (which is rare), the ship's radio operator can connect you to a mainland number in case of an emergency. Please keep in mind that making a ship-to-shore telephone call can be quite expensive, and it may be worth waiting to use a pay phone at the next port stop.
  • Mobile Devices : Some cruise lines offer onboard service, but reception may depend on your phone carrier. Watch out for expensive additional roaming or usage fees your mobile phone provider may issue. To be safe, keep your mobile phone off, or on airplane mode, to prevent charges from incoming text messages or roaming.

To check email or use social media, your best bet is to pay for access to the ship's computer stations. Another option is to find a free wi-fi location ashore, and download all your emails at no charge.

Laundry and dry-cleaning services are offered by most major cruise lines. Information about the service fees and procedures can be found in your cabin. Some ships even have self-service laundromats.

Smoking is usually allowed in limited designated areas, but not in most of the cabins, including your balcony, in the main dining rooms, or in most public areas. Cruise lines are strict about this policy and there can be cleaning fees or other penalties if you violate this. Consult the cruise line's general conditions, rules, and regulations for additional details about the cruise line's specific smoking policies.

Most cruise ships maintain a minimum drinking age of 21, however, a few may lower the drinking age to 18 when sailing from non-US ports.

While doing your online registration with the cruise line, they will provide you with information about shore excursions (including photos, video clips, excursion difficulty, duration and cost).

If the cruise line does not allow you to book an excursion online ahead of time, or if you choose not to, you can book on board at the ship's shore excursion desk. Book early for the best selection, as some excursions sell out quickly.

Why not begin or end your trip with an excursion? Check our Activities page for some great options.

Embarkation begins when you start to board the ship. You can usually board the ship 3 to 4 hours before departure.

All passengers must be on board at least 60 to 90 minutes prior to departure. Check the individual cruise line's policies for final boarding times.

Check in at the pier with your proof of citizenship (passport or government-issued photo ID and birth certificate). Some itineraries may include countries requiring travel visas. Check the individual cruise line's policies for required documentation. At this time, you'll also set up your onboard account for services and items purchased on board.

Upon boarding, you'll be able to have a snack or a full lunch, explore the ship, or simply spend time in your cabin. Due to security reasons, passengers may not bring visitors on board.

First-Time Cruise Tips

Best Time to Book a Cruise : Wave Season (January–March) and during Cruise Week – usually in early September – are when you'll score the year's top deals, including free perks (like upgrades and onboard credits) and discounted fares.

Avoid the Queasy Stomach : Sensitive to motion sickness? Choose a cabin on a lower deck, mid-ship, or try a short-duration cruise first. There are a variety of 2- to 4- night cruise options from Sydney and Brisbane. Alternatively, choose an Alaskan Inside passage itinerary, as these do not cross open ocean. Or maybe you’d prefer a river cruise itinerary for the smoothest cruise of all!

Arrive Early at the Cruise Port : Plan to arrive at least two hours before your ship's departure time. If possible, fly to your embarkation city the night before in case of flight delays, especially when starting a cruise on another continent.

Get Onboard Spa Specials : If you're a spa seeker, look for specials on days the ship is in port. You can save up to 25 per cent – a great way to kick-start a holiday.

Ask for a wakeup call : Most cabins don't have alarm clocks, so plan to bring your own, or request a phone wakeup call.

Celebrate Special Occasions : Celebrating a birthday or anniversary onboard? Pre-order flowers, cakes, champagne and more.

Check the Daily Onboard Schedule : The ship newsletter is delivered nightly to your cabin. Here, you'll find the next day's entertainment schedule, special events, dinner themes and attire, and other helpful tips.

Pose for Pictures : If you don't like lugging your camera around, don't worry. A professional photographer will be onboard to capture special moments, and the photos will be available for purchase at the end of your cruise.

Before You Leave

From booking your shore excursions to packing your bags, there's a lot to remember when preparing to leave for your cruise. Refer to this information to ensure a smooth departure. Things to Do If you booked a flight and/or hotel, be sure to confirm those reservations. Consider buying the cruise travel protection to protect your vacation investment in case of injury or sickness. Complete the advanced registration information on the cruise line's website to reduce the check-in time at the pier. Be prepared to provide your reservation number, passport information, and other details to complete the registration. Research country entry requirements and apply for any necessary visas . Book airport transfers to the pier. If possible, do this several weeks prior to sailing. Inform friends and family of your travel plans and provide them with the cruise line's emergency phone number. Take care of arrangements for your home including houseplants, mail, newspapers, pets, last-minute bills, etc. Book your spa services, specialty restaurant reservations, and popular shore excursions as soon as possible. Some cruise lines allow you to do this online before you sail. Contact your bank to advise them of the countries and/or states you'll be visiting. Double-check with your mobile phone carrier about roaming charges in foreign countries. Be prepared with cash. It's handy to have cash in port and for parking at the pier. Most cruise ships have ATMs onboard; however, the ATM service fee may be significant. Cruise Packing List Pack efficiently, leaving enough room to bring home souvenirs. Most cruise ships offer laundry services, so you may not need to bring as many clothing items as anticipated. Check your cruise line for any dress code requirements. Most cruise lines have at least one formal night. Bring your travel documents (cruise ship itinerary and tickets, passports, personal identification, shore excursion confirmations, etc.) along with photocopies. It's also a good idea to have these items in a carry-on bag in case your luggage is lost. Pack everything you'll need for your first day onboard in your carry-on (medications, swimsuit, etc.), as it can take time for your luggage to be delivered to your room. Don't Forget: Sunblock Sunglasses Swimwear (bring a second swimsuit to allow for drying time) Formal wear (check cruise line for any dress code requirements) Comfortable walking shoes Climate-appropriate clothing, including items to layer Prescription medications A small backpack or tote to carry items around the ship or in port Camera with extra film or memory cards Books or magazines for days at sea Batteries or chargers for portable electronic devices Luggage tags Carry-on bag with essentials (you may arrive at your cabin prior to your luggage delivery) Passport and travel documents with photocopies Credit cards and cash

Getting to Your Ship

Upon arrival at the pier, you'll proceed through the embarkation process, making your way through customs and cruise ship check-in. Arriving at the Pier You can purchase round-trip transfers from the airport to the pier from most cruise lines, but if possible, we suggest doing this at least several weeks prior to sailing. If you are parking at the pier, be prepared with cash as many pier parking lots accept cash only. Get onboard as soon as possible to take full advantage of everything the ship has to offer. Ship boarding usually begins four to five hours before the ship is scheduled to depart. Embarkation All passengers must be onboard at least 90 minutes prior to departure. Otherwise, you risk being denied boarding. During embarkation, you'll likely need to show personal identification more than once, so have your passport and cruise documents in-hand to speed up the process. Be sure to change the settings on your cell phone to avoid roaming charges while at sea. Don't Forget: Directions from the airport or your hotel to the pier Airport shuttle or transfer reservations Passport, identification, and cruise documents Luggage and personal items Cash for taxi fare or parking

Onboard Health & Safety

Although many may not think about it when planning a trip, basic ship safety is an important part of a successful cruise vacation. Please take a moment to look over our cruise safety information for helpful tips on what to expect. What to Know Plan to take part in the ship's safety, or muster, drill. This mandatory exercise informs passengers with the location and operation of life vests, as well as the emergency exit locations. The drill typically takes place before departure and all passengers are required to participate. Once onboard, take time to explore the ship. Although cruise ships offer ample directional signage and mapping, getting around can be intimidating at first. Here's a quick guide to get you turned in the right direction:     •  Bow : The most forward part of the ship     •  Stern : The rearmost part of the ship     •  Forward : Toward the bow of the ship     •  Aft : Toward the stern of the ship     •  Starboard : When facing forward, the right side of the ship     •  Port : When facing forward, the left side of the ship There are no lifeguards on duty at swimming pools onboard; parental supervision is required for children. Most ships have personal safes within each cabin to securely store your valuables. Health and Wellness All ships have doctors onboard to assist sick passengers. Familiarize yourself with the doctor's location and services. Visit the gift shop to see what items are sold in the event you require over-the-counter medications. Don't forget to bring comfortable shoes—they will be very helpful for all the walking you'll be doing onboard and ashore. Don't Forget: Seasickness medications Personal medications/prescriptions Comfortable shoes

Shore Excursions

Venture to awesome sights far from the pier, skip the hassle of planning your own onshore activities, and learn more about an area from a local guide. Here are some great excursion tips to get you started. How to Book a Shore Excursion Prior to sailing, book your onshore excursions. You can do this with the cruise line directly. Or, once onboard, you can book at the Shore Excursions desk. Think about the type of shore excursion you are looking for. Excursions vary greatly, from active tours (zip-lining, dog-sledding, hiking, etc.) to sightseeing (typically bus tours that take you to your destination). You can also choose from full- and half-day tours, as well as exclusive tours with a limited number of guests. Many shore excursions sell out quickly, so book your excursions ahead of time to secure your reservations. Book online when possible. Cruise Excursion Tips Dress appropriately. Excursions may require you to wear swimwear, jeans, or walking shoes. You can ask the Shore Excursions desk onboard for advice on what to wear for your excursion. Remember, you aren't required to get off the ship on port days, so you can always choose to enjoy a quiet day onboard. This can be a great time to book that much needed spa appointment, too—you'll have the place to yourself! Don't Forget: Towels, swimwear, sunblock, and other appropriate essentials Cash, credit cards, and personal identification safely stored in a small bag or wallet Shore excursion tickets and logistics (meeting times and places, duration, etc.)

Disembarkation & Returning Home

Concluding your cruise vacation begins with the disembarkation process: the act of getting off the cruise ship. The following tips will help you prepare for the last day of your cruise. Before Disembarkation Begins Review your final onboard charges statement for accuracy. You can check your account information anytime throughout your cruise at the Guest Services desk, so consider settling up before the last day of your cruise to avoid lines. Look for service charges/tipping to appear on your statement. Many cruise lines charge an automatic fee per person, per day (usually $10–$15 per day) for the service received onboard. If your service was excellent, consider adjusting the tip to a higher amount. On the final night of the cruise, you'll have the option of placing your luggage outside your cabin door. If you don't set your luggage out, you'll be required to take it off the ship yourself. Properly label your bags for easy identification. Bag tags are provided by the cruise line. Your disembarkation information, along with any necessary customs forms, will be left in your cabin the night before you disembark. Disembarkation Tips If you want breakfast on disembarkation day, you'll generally need to get up extra early, so plan accordingly. Don't forget that carry-on bag! Assemble important information and items you'll need (contacts, sunscreen, wallet, etc.) for the last day in a separate bag that you'll take with you. Plan transfers from the pier accordingly. Disembarkation may occur up to three hours after the arrival of the ship due to immigration and customs. Some countries require a departure tax that is due at the airport upon leaving. These taxes are often payable in cash only, so be sure to read up on country-specific departure procedures so you have enough cash on hand. Don't Forget: Carry-on bag and luggage (if you choose to carry the luggage off the ship yourself) Completed customs forms Passport and personal identification Airplane tickets and/or hotel reservation information Airport shuttle or transfer reservations

Until then, the 7-Day Mediterranean with Greece & Italy on the brand new Sun Princess is a terrific way to experience this part of the world. Departing Piraeus, near Athens, she calls upon Montenegro; Corfu, Greece; and Sicily and Naples, Italy, before arriving in Barcelona, with plenty of shore excursions from which to choose. One of those itineraries is the 15-night Malta, Morocco and the Mediterranean cruise, sailing round-trip from Barcelona. The newly added itinerary lends itself to days of lingering longer to explore ports like Marseille, France, Valletta, Malta, Casablanca, Morocco and plenty more. Complimentary shore excursions are included with each Viking cruise; on the itinerary, guests can choose from excursions like a panoramic tour of Corsica, sightseeing in Rome and Algiers, and a walking tour of Málaga, to name a few. Couples who want some alone time can also choose to wander off together and find their own way to spend each day. Back onboard Viking Saturn , relax in your spacious cabin, enjoy a cultural performance, enjoy a wine pairing dinner at the Chef’s Table, or enroll in a cooking class to learn how to take the flavors of the Mediterranean back home with you.

Sailing roundtrip from Piraeus, near Athens, the 7-Day Jewels of the Mediterranean itinerary calls upon Rhodes, Santorini and Mykonos, Greece, as well as ports in Turkey and Cyprus.

Those cuisine offerings highlight fresh, regional dishes, including new dishes from Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, the cruise line’s Global Fresh Fish Ambassador. Sailing roundtrip from Piraeus, near Athens, the 7-Day Jewels of the Mediterranean itinerary calls upon Rhodes, Santorini and Mykonos, Greece, as well as ports in Turkey and Cyprus. Venture out and discover the ports on your own, or choose to join excursions coordinated by the Holland America team, ranging from visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Seven Wonders of the World, to soaking up the Mediterranean sun on a gold-sand beach, to wandering the narrow streets of Oia, a town on the island of Santorini known for its blue-domed buildings.

Curated excursions highlight the history of different ports of call, showing them in a different light.

Azamara Pursuit

Recommended Itinerary : 11-Night Best Of the Med Voyage, from Venice to Barcelona
Departures : May 2024; July 2024; October 2024
All-Star Amenities : Gratuities included in fare; fresh flowers and plush robes in each stateroom and suite; seven restaurants, cafes and lounges; special dietary needs accommodated; White Night party; new Sanctum Spa

The Mediterranean is rich in history, and Azamara’s 11-night Best Of the Med Voyage dives right in, starting in Venice, with its cobblestone streets, overarching bridges and iconic canals weaving through the city. From there, Azamara Pursuit calls upon ports in Croatia, France and other parts of Italy before arriving in Barcelona. Curated excursions highlight the history of these ports of call, yet show them in a different light. For example, cruisers can opt to take a tuk-tuk ride through the historic city of Zadar on the Dalmatian Coast, go hiking in Ston, built in 1335 and considered one of Europe’s best-planned cities, or stroll through the medieval walls of Old Town Dubrovnik. In Italy, guests can travel to the ancient seaside resort town of Herculaneum to witness its archeological excavations and recovered ruins, wander the Renaissance city of Lucca, or watch an Italian opera at the Goldoni Theatre, which opened in 1847. Back onboard, cultural evenings featuring performances by locals will immerse you even further into each destination.

The cruise line’s all-new Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) culinary program was created to enable guests to travel deeper and learn about destinations’ culinary heritage.

Silver Moon

Recommended Itinerary : 20-Night Fusina (Venice) to Barcelona
Departures : July 2024; August 2024 (Barcelona to Fusina)
All-Star Amenities : Less than 600 guests; all-suite spacious accommodations, most with private verandas; highest guest-to-service ratio at sea; butler service; complimentary shore excursions and onboard lectures; all-new Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) culinary program

The Mediterranean is world-renowned for its excellent cuisine, so it’s no wonder that foodies flock here to experience the region through its many flavors and native dishes. Silversea invites its guests to dive right in with its 21-day Fusina (Venice) to Barcelona itinerary aboard the Silver Moon , calling upon 21 ports in seven countries, beginning in Venice and ending in Barcelona. The cruise line’s all-new Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) culinary program was created to enable guests to travel deeper and learn about each destinations’ culinary heritage through curated gastronomic experiences, both at sea and in port. Gastro excursions on the Fusina to Barcelona itinerary include an authentic farm-to-table dining experience in Dubrovnik, taking a cooking class and make some of the delicious specialties of Italy’s Apulian region, a full-day S.A.L.T. organic winery and cooking experience with lunch in Montenegro and a S.A.L.T. cook and taste of Sorrento with Michelin starred Chef Peppe Guida, to name a few. Back onboard the Silver Moon , step into the S.A.L.T. Lab to participate in cooking classes and workshops to learn more about regional dishes, including how to make them at home.

How to save on cruises with AARP Travel

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Savings-conscious consumers have long gravitated toward AARP. The advocacy organization for older Americans negotiates discounts on everything from mobile phone plans and drug prescriptions to restaurants, hotels and, yes, cruises. While “older” generally connotes seniors ages 65 and above, AARP membership is open to Americans who are considerably younger. But is it worth subscribing if you’re looking to save money on your next cruise?

I remember feeling insulted when right before my 50th birthday I received an invitation by mail to join AARP. “I’m nowhere near retirement,” I thought as I crumpled it, mumbled something about ageism and tossed it in the trash. This was years after AARP (pronounced A-A-R-P with the letters sounded out) officially changed its name to its acronym. It was founded in 1958 as the American Association of Retired Persons, but as leading-edge baby boomers began retiring in their 50s, AARP started to engage with them to encourage younger membership.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

More than a decade later I’m still not retired, but this assignment gave me an excuse to finally join AARP. When I did, I took a look at the perks of membership to see which benefits would be useful to my travel plans. Here’s what I learned about how to save on cruises with AARP Travel.

You don’t have to be retired or age 50-plus to join AARP

You do need to be age 50 or older to reap full benefits, but Americans ages 18 to 49 can also join AARP. Folks under 50 can receive most member benefits, aside from those restricted by law or contract, such as certain insurance products.

To sign up, simply visit AARP.org and click “Join Now.” Membership is $16 per year, although rates can be as low as $9 per year if you sign up for a multiyear membership term.

Related: This annual membership can save you hundreds on flights and hotels

When you join, you’ll also get a second free membership for another adult in your household, as well as a monthly AARP Bulletin and the bimonthly AARP The Magazine.

You can book cruise travel via the AARP Travel Center Powered by Expedia

The booking engine that offers member discounts for cruises, as well as hotels and rental cars, is the AARP Travel Center Powered by Expedia . This is where you can search for ocean or river cruises, just as you would on Expedia, with an added bonus: AARP members can receive up to $100 onboard credit on more than 15 cruise lines and up to $200 onboard credit on select Holland America Line cruises.

You can search for a cruise by using a drop-down menu of almost two dozen destinations (you have to pick one to search) and then plugging in your desired travel dates.

The ocean cruise options are fairly extensive but not deeply discounted

Since Expedia powers the AARP Travel Center, it offers access to an extensive range of cruises to global destinations, from a three-night Caribbean sailing from Miami on Norwegian Sky to an 80-night world cruise on Cunard ‘s Queen Victoria. In all, I found thousands of sailings offered by most major cruise lines through mid-2025.

When I searched for Caribbean cruises during the period from Jan. 1 to April 30, 2024, the booking engine returned more than 800 options offered by 13 cruise lines. When I narrowed my search to just premium and luxury cruise lines, I saw a seven-night Caribbean itinerary from Miami on Oceania ‘s new cruise ship Vista in mid-February priced at $2,599 per person for a balcony cabin with bonus shore excursion, beverage, specialty dining and Wi-Fi inclusions. This Western Caribbean itinerary calls on Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Harvest Caye, Belize, with two sea days.

That seemed like a terrific deal, but when I checked Oceania’s website, I found the same price with all the included bonuses. The only difference was the “up to $100” onboard credit available with AARP membership. In this case, the credit was the full $100 because the cruise fare was more than $2,000. Cruises priced below $2,000 per person get a $50 credit.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on an Oceania Cruises ship

Other deals in the luxury category included a seven-night Caribbean cruise in late February 2024 in a verandah suite aboard Seabourn Ovation for $3,249 per person. The cruise departs from St. Maarten and calls on the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique before ending in Barbados. On Seabourn ’s website, verandah suites for this itinerary started at $3,419 per person. So, the AARP price did offer a savings of $150 per person — plus the $100 onboard credit.

Budget-minded cruisers can also find plenty of three-night sailings for $300 per person or less (for an inside or ocean-view cabin on Norwegian Sky with free drinks, dining and excursion credits) and even some seven-night sailings for under $500 per person (for an inside cabin on Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises and Princess Cruises ships). All were similar to what’s available on the cruise lines’ websites, but with AARP qualified for an onboard credit of $50.

Cruisers who prefer Holland America also have plenty of choices. They can, for example, book a seven-night Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale in early March 2024 aboard Nieuw Statendam that visits Jamaica; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; Cozumel; and Half Moon Cay, Bahamas. The price? An inside cabin was priced at $614 per person (comparable to what HAL offers on its website) and came with a $50 onboard credit.

What I discovered is that the $200 onboard credit deal with AARP links directly to Holland America’s website for booking and is valid only for balcony and suite bookings on select cruises lasting 10 days or more.

AARP members can also book expedition cruises , such as 12-night Antarctic Explorer itineraries on Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, via the AARP Travel Center. These are priced at $11,995 per person (the same price as on Viking’s website) with just a $25 deposit. Again, the only savings is the $100 onboard credit.

Basically, the AARP Travel Center seems to be an expedient way to compare ocean cruise deals as they are offered by individual cruise lines via the booking engine Expedia — with the chance of scoring a slightly discounted cruise fare and the added bonus of a $50, $100 or $200 onboard credit, depending on the cruise booked.

AARP Travel Center has offers from 4 major river cruise lines

The AARP Travel Center also allows you to search and compare river cruises by searching the destination “Europe” and a specific date range.

A search for European river cruises in 2024 and 2025 turned up hundreds of options on river ships operated by AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld River Cruises and Viking. Itineraries ranged from a seven-night Rhine River cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, in late March 2024 aboard Avalon Panorama for $1,949 per person to several sailings of 20 nights or more priced at $15,000 per person and above for suite accommodations.

There were also more than a dozen Viking itineraries on the Rhine in March and early April 2024 for $1,999 per person, which is the same price featured on Viking’s website. Uniworld prices start at $2,999 per person, also comparable to its website, while AmaWaterways ’ value fares ($1,919 to $2,159 per person for Rhine cruises) all matched the cruise line’s pricing — and were in February 2024. Brrr!

A search for river cruises in Asia in 2024 and 2025 turned up more than 300 sailings on AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways and Uniworld, most 12 to 14 nights in length with prices ranging from $6,999 to $8,399 per person.

Once again, the AARP Travel Center seems to be an efficient aggregator, pulling deals from Expedia’s booking engine. River cruise fares also are eligible for a $50 or $100 onboard credit.

River cruise fans can find additional members-only deals beyond onboard credit

AARP members also have access to specific deals on river cruises offered by AARP-preferred travel providers.

Offers include saving up to $100 per person on river cruises booked via Grand European Travel. These are aboard luxury river cruise ships in Europe operated by Uniworld, and the $100 discount per person is off prices comparable to those listed when booking directly with Uniworld.

For example, the eight-day Enchanting Danube itinerary in March and April 2024 aboard S.S. Maria Theresa starts at $3,299 per person, the same as on Uniworld’s website. The total savings? A $100 per person discount if booked with Grand European Travel.

Another savings opportunity is $50 off per person on Collette cruisetours . Cruise options here are more limited and are mostly on Amadeus River Cruises ships on the Rhine and Danube, plus some small-ship coastal cruising in Croatia and tours in Egypt featuring a four-night cruise.

Members-only benefits also include 5% off select rail-and-cruise vacations with Vacations by Rail . The discount is offered on a variety of itineraries in Europe that combine rail travel with cruises aboard river ships operated by CroisiEurope and Amadeus. The catch: All tours begin in London (Vacations by Rail’s parent company is British), which can be a detour for American travelers because it’s simpler to arrive by air in Amsterdam, Basel, Budapest or Bordeaux, France, where these cruises begin.

Some guided tours are 12 days, with four days of rail travel and hotel stays in advance of a seven-night cruise. Reviews, however, mention the hassle of getting luggage on and off trains by yourself (there are no porters).

Related: Best cruises for seniors who love to travel by sea

The cost of the four-day rail/hotel portion of Vacation by Rail’s 12-day Glacier Express & the Majestic Rhine cruise-and-rail tour also seems to account for about half of the overall cost for one-third of the days. The price is $5,095 per person for a June 2024 package, but the seven-night Classical Rhine itinerary on board MS Amadeus Star from Basel to Amsterdam that is included can be booked on the Amadeus website for about $2,600 per person on dates in May and July or $1,913 per person in April.

Both the agility required for train travel and the cost of the four-day rail tour are something to consider when weighing the value of a 5% discount.

Discounted cruise line gift cards are available to AARP Rewards members

Members who sign up for AARP Rewards — which lets you earn points by taking knowledge-boosting quizzes or using fitness-tracking or money-crunching tools — can also purchase gift cards for five cruise lines at a 10% discount. Applicable lines include Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean.

AARP Rewards members have two options: $100 gift cards priced at $90 ($92 for Princess) and $500 gift cards priced at $450 ($460 for Princess). You can use these gift cards to pay for a portion of your cruise fare or, on some lines, onboard expenses.

Card availability and amounts may change at any time. You can purchase a maximum of 25 gift cards each month.

You can find deals for pre- or post-cruise hotel stays and get a discount on British Airways

You might save the most money by booking a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay with one of AARP Travel Center’s dozens of hotel partners, most of which offer a 10% discount off the best available nightly rate. The list includes Hilton, InterContinental, Radisson, Holiday Inn, Best Western, Embassy Suites, Wyndham, Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, Kimpton and Hotel Indigo.

AARP also has partnered with British Airways. Members save $65 off World Traveller (economy) and World Traveller Plus (premium economy) or $200 off Club World (business class) fares when they purchase round-trip transatlantic tickets online to more than 130 destinations, including Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Restrictions do apply.

You can save money with AARP, but you should also do your homework

The AARP Travel Center seems to be a terrific place to compare fares when deciding which cruise line and month best suits your budget. Whether you eventually book via AARP, the cruise line’s website or elsewhere depends on your preference. (Remember, travel agents and advisers often have deals with extras that websites don’t.)

With similar pricing, it probably depends on whether the onboard credit is a better bonus than perks offered elsewhere.

Signing up for email offers from your preferred cruise line and checking its “deals” or “offers” tab on a regular basis might be your best bet for scoring a top deal. However, there’s no doubt that AARP’s $9 to $16 annual membership fee quickly pays for itself with even a one-time onboard credit — and there is a potential for additional savings. No matter your age, it can’t hurt to sign up.
