13 nominees for EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Malaysia 2021 awards as programme passes two-decade milestone

Thirteen outstanding individuals or teams have qualified as top nominees for the annual EY Entrepreneur Of The Year (EOY) 2021 Malaysia awards , it was announced in a virtual ceremony on Nov 22, which marks the second consecutive year that the nomination ceremony had to be held in such a setting because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Winners of the four category awards — Emerging, Technology, Women and Master — as well as the coveted EOY 2021 Malaysia award will be announced at another virtual ceremony next February, as it is unlikely that a gala event on a pre-pandemic scale could be held.

Although a grand occasion to fete the winners would have been ideal, as this year happens to be the 20th year of the EOY programme in Malaysia, the calibre of all applicants and the tenacity of the final list of nominees remain more than worthy of celebration.

Commenting on the milestone, programme director Philip Rao, says, “As we mark the 20th anniversary of the EOY programme in Malaysia, we are gratified and honoured to have had the unique privilege to recognise and celebrate over 300 remarkable men and women across generations, industries and sectors. In the face of adversity, especially in recent months, these entrepreneurs continue to rise up to build a better working world.”

Rao expressed pride at being able to provide these industry leaders a platform to share with the rest of the world their success stories and “more importantly, their enduring legacy and far-reaching impact on surrounding communities and the country”.

“They are relentless in seeking better solutions to some of our biggest challenges and reinventing a future that transforms our lives. They have demonstrated their perseverance and ingenuity in steering their business and industries forward while supporting their employees and communities,” says Rao, who is also a Consulting Partner at Ernst & Young Consulting Sdn Bhd.

The nominees were decided by an independent panel of judges guided by a set of criteria that is consistently applied globally by the programme. This year, the panel comprises EOY alumni Hyrax Oil’s Datuk Hazimah Zainuddin, Aerodyne Group’s Kamarul

A Muhamed and Karex Bhd CEO Goh Mah Kiat, as well as other influential voices — Bursa Malaysia CEO Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, MDEC chief marketing officer Raymond Siva, Aeon Group chief merchandising officer Low Ngai Yuen — and executive director of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat Tan Sri Dr Rebecca Sta Maria.

Rao says the panel of judges had a challenging task in determining this year’s top nominees, as “every one of their persons, stories and journeys [is] inspiring, more so given the unprecedented challenges they had faced in the past months, and now stand[s] as testament to their accomplishments and success”.

The Malaysian EOY 2021 top entrepreneur will join fellow winners from around the globe in June 2022 to compete for the EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year (WEOY) 2022 award.

Although the EOY programme has been running for two decades in Malaysia, there has never been a shortage of nominees, as entrepreneurship is part of the local culture, whether it is a neighbourhood stall selling nasi lemak in the morning or a multi-million-dollar conglomerate with a global presence. To build something of long-term value takes grit, persistence and a sense of ambition that is free of doubt or fear, and the EOY programme takes much joy in celebrating these unstoppable human beings, whose unbounded ambitions deliver innovation, growth and prosperity that transform our world.

With a contemporary look and feel, and a touch of traditional performance, we managed to deliver MRT Corp Raya Open House for the second year. Housing 1200 pax at the Sime DarbyConvention Centre, the event was given an atmospheric quality of celebration and togetherness with performances such as Cak Lempong.

Wowsome Photo Booth was provided for guests’ entertainment where they get to bring back their own mementos. A traditional pavilion was added too, to bring over the big crowd from

space to have a splendid, and meaningful occasion.

2018  • Talent Corp Career Comeback Fair

Glorifying precious talents and skills, this event is a job fair for empowering women in motherhood who would like to pursue their careers again.

A button badge backdrop was designed specifically for that estimated 300 pax event, with the hope of instilling the best traits of them during the career fair.

It was an honourable event to be executed by the team.

These bankers are brought into Joker’s favourite city, Gotham, and immersed into Joker’s favourite city, Gotham, where these bankers are brought into Joker's favourite city, Gotham. The portrayal of a dark and foreboding place rife with crime, grime, and corruption.

It was executed with the use of elements such as glow

in the dark to compliment the villain-themed party.

The whole ballroom was transformed within 3 ½ hours. We even sculpted the infamous Poison Ivy’s Apple Tree into a game

as a means of crowd control before the party started.

The details of the event were meticulously designed too,

making it a fun, memorable, and gregarious event.

2017  • Sasbadi 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner

A night of appreciation and sparkle, bringing out the stars of SASBADI Holdings celebrating the SASBADI 30th Anniversary. Gathering 1200 guests in glitz and glamour with a special performance by legendary singer and performer Ms. Fauziah Latiff.

The show began with an innovative shadow art performance and was hosted by radio emcees – Nadia & Cody. Guests came with mesmerized expressions and left with big smiles of satisfaction and happiness.

Turning serious bankers into characters of

READY for a green career and sustainable future? Get insights into the green employment sector at the Kesuma Green Skills and Green Job Fair in Kuala Lumpur.

The fair serves as a platform for exposure to the sector and provides opportunities for many to better understand the concept and types of green jobs.

Some 3,000 opportunities in the green employment sector are being offered through the fair for three days until Saturday (April 27) at Avenue K shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur, from 10am to 5pm.

The Kesuma Green Skills and Green Job Fair is organised by the Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma) through Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) and Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial (PERKESO), respectively.

It is being held in collaboration with the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) in conjunction with the Asean Green Job Forum (AGJF), focusing on career opportunities in the green job sector in the country.

The fair is in response to the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the green economy. As such, the event aims to increase engagement and awareness while providing talents with the necessary skills to contribute effectively to the thriving green economy.

At the launch event, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong highlighted the green economy as an economic paradigm that drives growth, income, and employment while preserving ecosystem resources and natural biodiversity.

He also emphasised the importance of nurturing a workforce adept in meeting the demands of investors within the green economy.

“The Green Skills and Green Jobs Fair is the first collaborative effort of its kind by Kesuma with industry and academia to strengthen the development of green skills and job opportunities in alignment with the region’s economic and sustainable environmental needs,” he said.

He shared, “Our aim is to build a competent workforce equipped with green skills — achieved through the identification, upskilling, and reskilling of individuals — to meet the escalating demands of the green economy.”

With strategic frameworks like the Green Technology Master Plan 2017-2030 (GMTP) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the government expects to attract investments of up to RM1.3tril, boost gross domestic product (GDP) to RM220bil, and create over 300,000 job opportunities by 2050.

At the Green Skills Fair, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in 12 pocket talks covering a range of topics. Speakers will feature representatives from various organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malaysia, EY Malaysia, LinkedIn Malaysia, HRD Corp, Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC), Malaysian PayGap, and others.

The event will also host booths from organisations highlighting their efforts in green technology and sustainability innovations. University exhibitors will showcase courses and modules relevant to green skills.

Among the 22 booth exhibitors are Pos Malaysia, Modenas, Gentari, MGTC, Cyberview Sdn Bhd, Amanah Lestari Alam, Sustain.Ed - Sea Monkey Project X Earth Heir, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, and more.

At the same time, PERKESO will host the MYFutureJobs Green Job Fair, where close to 60 employers across various industries will present over 3,000 job opportunities for Malaysians with salary offers ranging up to RM9,000.

Participating employers include AEON Co (M) Bhd, RHB Bank Bhd, DME Solutions Sdn Bhd, Tan Chong Group, IHH Healthcare Malaysia, FGV Holdings Bhd, Sols Energy Sdn Bhd, United Solar Energy Malaysia Sdn Bhd, ERS Energy Sdn Bhd, Ranhill Bersekutu Sdn Bhd, IFP Engineering Solutions Sdn Bhd, UOA Group, and more.

In addition to being a platform to secure dream jobs, this fair also provides career counseling services to enhance successful opportunities in interviews.

Visitors also have the opportunity to obtain further information about the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) and the Housewives’ Social Security Scheme (SKSSR).

Besides this, PERKESO will be organising a series of MYFutureJobs Kesuma Madani Job Fair in conjunction with Labour Day 2024, starting at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) on April 30 and May 1, which will offer over 10,000 vacancies.

The series of job fairs will also be organised in Kelantan on May 4 and 5, Johor on May 5 and Sarawak on May 18 and 19.
