Ten States. One River.
Fall color hotspots.
Friday, October 13, 2017
Peak fall colors are arriving in the northern states along the Mississippi River. The Great River Road will take you through the heart of this splendor, passing some spectacular lookouts along the way. See a listing of scenic overlooks here . And here are some of the spots where fall colors are spectacular this month.
Garvin Heights Park, Winona, Minnesota
Take the mile and a half road up the bluff side to get to the scenic overlook of Winona and all its beautiful fall colors. This is an ideal place for a picnic on a warmer day. Hikers can explore beautiful trails that trace the ledges of the bluffs. Or bring your bike and try to bike up the bluff – it’s such a challenging ride that Tour de France winner Greg LeMond trained here!
Buena Vista Park, Trail & Overlook , Alma, WI
This great spot overlooking the Mississippi is located 30 minutes north of Winona. Better Homes & Gardens Magazine named this one of the river valley’s “finest natural balconies.” The lookout towers 500 feet above tree-lined Alma and the Mississippi River Valley. Watch the barges and boats travel through the lock & dam, do some birdwatching, watch the sun set over the river!
Falconer Vineyards, Red Wing, MN
Here you can enjoy a glass of wine with your fall colors. There are more than a dozen varieties of wines to choose from, including whites, reds, rosé, dessert wines. The winery overlooks a gorgeous vineyard and is nestled in the bluff valleys, surrounded by beautiful fall colors. Stay for the sunset here – the bistro offers pizza for dinner!
Mt. Hosmer Park, Lansing, Iowa
This park is located on a bluff that towers 450 feet above Lansing. It offers a panoramic overlook of 50 miles of the Mississippi River Valley and its fall foliage. There’s also some beautiful hiking and biking trails here. While in Lancing, check out one of the newest Great River Road Interpretive Center – the Driftless Area Education & Visitor Center .
Fenelon Place Elevator, Dubuque, Iowa
Here you’ll find the world’s shortest, steepest elevator ride. The elevator was originally built to help people who lived in the bluffs get home more quickly than driving their horse and buggy. The ride is about 300 feet long but takes you 189 feet up. Below you’ll see a spectacular view of Dubuque’s historic business district, the Mississippi River and three states!

Midwest hospitality and a relaxing riverboat cruise create a unique atmosphere from which to witness the beautiful fall colors along the mighty Mississippi. Take in the colors of fall as we cross Northern Pennsylvania. We'll stop for lunch on our own enroute. Our lodging will be in Westlake, OH this evening. Dinner will be at our leisure.
After breakfast we will visit AuGlaize Village and Farm Museum in Defiance, OH. The village is home to an incredible collection of historical buildings from around the region, including a schoolhouse, church, post office, doctor's office, and a train depot from the mid-1800s. Stroll through the 22 new or restored buildings, four farm museums, military museum, natural history museum, and model railroad museum. Lunch will be included at a local restaurant. Our next stop is the Studebaker National Museum. Here we will see displays of horse-drawn and motorized vehicles manufactured in South Bend. Tonight's lodging will be in the Chicago area. Dinner will be on our own.
We'll enjoy a continental breakfast at the hotel to begin our day. Next, we will arrive in the Mississippi Riverside city of Moline, IL in time for lunch on our own before we visit the John Deere Pavilion. The Pavilion is recognized as the world's most comprehensive agricultural exhibit and was created as a celebration of the past, present, and future of agribusiness. We will then travel a short distance to LeClaire, IA. This afternoon you are free to enjoy LeClaire at your leisure and get lunch on your own before we check-in to our hotel. Dinner will be on our own.
This morning we'll board the Twilight for an all-day riverboat cruise. After boarding we'll enjoy an included continental breakfast on this elegant riverboat. She is fast & quiet as she slips through the water and is the most richly appointed riverboat to be launched in a hundred years. Victorian steamboat architecture inside & out pleases the eye. There are three decks with comfortable dining salons and sundecks with lounge chairs for those who wish to snooze in the sun. The Twilight takes pride in maintaining the river's grand tradition of good and bountiful food. Lunch and dinner will be served on board. There will also be morning and afternoon snacks as well as always available, complimentary coffee and iced tea. Buses will be waiting at disembarkation to take us to our overnight accommodations at the Grand Harbor Resort in Dubuque.
This morning, after breakfast, you can visit the Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, the Old Jail, or Diamond Jo Casino. After a free morning in Dubuque at our leisure, we'll re-board the Twilight for the trip back down river. As before, there is plenty to eat, historic comments by the captain, and live music. After dinner, we will disembark and return to LeClaire, IA and check-in to our overnight accommodations.
After a continental breakfast at the hotel we'll begin our journey home by way of Indianapolis, IN where we will enjoy a visit to the Eiteljorg Museum before checking-in to our overnight accommodations. There will be time for lunch on our own during today's travels. Dinner will be at our leisure.
After a continental breakfast at the hotel we'll enjoy a guided tour of Indianapolis, IN before we continue east to our overnight lodging near Pittsburgh, PA. There will be time for lunch on our own during today's travels. Dinner is included at a nearby restaurant.
After breakfast we'll enjoy a guided tour of some of Pittsburgh's highlights. After our tour, we will continue homeward enjoying even more of the beautiful Pennsylvania countryside. With stops for rest & lunch enroute, arrival home is scheduled for early evening.

This is the second of a two-part series on Fall Foliage cruises. Also see:
- 10 places in Canada to see gorgeous fall foliage
As a native New Englander, I'll admit that we locals can be a bit blasé about the changing of the seasons. But for out-of-towners, there's no question that autumn is one of the best times of the year to visit the Northeast and take in the colorful foliage and cool, crisp air.
If you've been thinking about a vacation where you can experience the full majesty of the fall — whether it's Boston , the Maine coast or further afield — you should think about taking a fall foliage cruise. At the top of the list is American Cruise Lines , whose fleet of eight ships offer enticing fall foliage getaways in the Pacific Northwest, Northeast, Southeast and Midwest during late September and most of October.
What to expect on American Cruise Lines
Their modern fleet of paddlewheel riverboats and small coastal cruise ships all offer outside rooms that feature either a private balcony (veranda) or a large picture window, giving you nice sweeping views of the passing landscapes throughout your voyage. With typical cabin sizes around 300 square feet, including full-size bathrooms, you won't feel pinched for space.
One advantage of an American Cruise Lines voyage is that the ships are small and hold only around 100 passengers. The ships range in size from the petite sailing ship American Glory, with 48 guests, to the Queen of the Mississippi and American Pride , with 150 guests. (Fun fact: Most river cruise ships in Europe are the same dimensions so they can slip through the unforgiving locks on the Danube, Rhine and other rivers with only a few inches to spare on each side. Not so river cruise ships in the U.S. where the major rivers don't have locks.)
With limited space does come limited onboard amenities: There's no casino, no big stage production shows, no spa, fitness center or swimming pool. But what you get is generally first rate.
The cruise line's menus change daily and feature locally sourced ingredients, reflecting the regions of the country where you are sailing for a more authentic experience. Complimentary wine and beer are served at lunch and dinner, and there is a pre-dinner reception where guests can mingle each evening. Lectures by local experts are provided most days, focusing on the region's history and highlights of upcoming ports. At each port, a handful of shore excursions are available through the cruise line, or you could book a private tour to make the most of your time on shore.
If you're considering taking in the sights and smells of autumn on a river cruise in the U.S., here are some top options on where to go to catch glimpses of fall foliage.
Northeast: Sail through the tranquil Catskills
Ships: american star, independence, american glory.
There may be no place better to watch the seasons change than the Catskill Mountains region of New York state. Traveling on either the Independence or American Star, you'll leave on a seven-night cruise that takes you from the hustle and bustle of New York City to the solitude of middle and upper New York state. Along the way, not only can you admire the rich colors, but you'll also make stops in ports including West Point, home to the United States Military Academy, and the state capital of Albany. A stop in Sleepy Hollow (site of the classic short story by Washington Irving) as well as Catskill will allow you to tour quaint small towns or venture off to see the fall foliage in nearby parks and forests.
Other Northeast options include a Maine Coast Cruise from May to September; a Grand New England Cruise in June, and seven-day Lobster Cruises from Providence to Martha's Vineyard and other ports in May and June (sorry, no fall sailings).
Midwest: Sailings on Upper Mississippi
Ships: queen of the mississippi, america.
If you're looking for a classic U.S. river cruise experience, the Fall Foliage cruises down the Mississippi River on Queen of Mississippi or America in early October might be perfect for you. This quintessential American experience will bring you through parts of the heartland as you cruise through Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota on a seven night trek. Along with witnessing colorful changes in the leaves, you can also experience some of the heartlands most iconic landmarks. From the St Louis Arch and Riverwalk to historic homes and avenues of Dubuque, Iowa and St. Paul, MN, your fall foliage cruise down the Mississippi River will be rich with Victorian era charm as well as natural beauty.
Midwest: Sailings on Lower Mississippi
Ships: queen of the mississippi, america.
American River Cruises features a slew of Civil War cruises out of New Orleans and Memphis, Tenn., on the Queen of the Mississippi and its newest ship, America , from now through December. Cruise into the heart of Dixie on a grand paddlewheeler on an eight-day voyage while enjoying authentic Cajun cuisine, views of the Mississippi Delta and shore excursions to historic venues such as Vicksburg, Miss., site of one of the most significant battles of the Civil War. Meet Southern Belles in period dress before touring historic Oak Alley planation and see attractions such as the interactive Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge, La.
Southeast: South Carolina to Florida
Cruises on American Star , Independence and American Glory this fall include "Historic South and Golden Isles Cruise" as well as cruises to Florida, Chesapeake Bay and small towns along the Eastern Seaboard. The Historic South cruise treks down a protected network of bays, rivers and canals that are home to iconic, storied cities such as Savannah, Charleston, Jekyll Island and Beaufort, S.C. In between ports you'll pass through expansive wildlife refuges and remote wilderness areas. These are sailings that nature and history lovers should enjoy.
Pacific Northwest: Columbia & Snake rivers
Ships: queen of the west, american pride.
For those looking for a little more adventure, you can head out west to Seattle to enjoy the changing of seasons in the Pacific Northwest with a Puget Sound and San Juan Islands Fall Foliage cruise. With the Olympic Mountains as your backdrop, you might also catch a glimpse of some wildlife, including whales and bald eagles. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture these moments, including one of the most photographed areas of the Northwest, Deception Point. Stopping in Victoria , British Columbia, you will want to visit Butchart Gardens with its vibrant color displays and explore the Inner Harbor to see the historic Fairmont Empress Hotel and the British Parliament buildings, which take on a special beauty when lit up at night.
Other choices
You'll also catch some fall foliage on cruises out of Seattle to Alaska's Inside Passage on American Spirit , though those voyages are more about seeing wildlife than catching fall colors in the evergreen-heavy Northwest.
Planning your trip
Itineraries for 2016 and 2017 are available and filling up, so now is the best time to start planning your fall foliage river cruise. I'm looking forward to trying out one of these ships myself to garner a new perspective.

We leave our dock at 9:30 am and return around 4:00 pm. Keep in mind that a boat cannot schedule a time to enter the lock, so our Captain uses his knowledge and experience to return at the right time, but circumstances could cause us to return to dock a little late.

In the event that we cannot use the lock, we will instead travel to Bellevue, IA before returning home. On this alternate route, we will not pass through a lock.
Some Useful Information
Blocked streets can cause delays.
We appreciate railroads and the hard work of their crews, but travelers need to be aware of possible driving delays due to Dubuque streets being blocked by trains. If you are approaching our location by driving northbound on US Hwy 61/151, do not take the White Street or 9th Street Exits to get to us. Both of these exits cross railroad tracks, and trains can sometimes block street traffic as long as 30 minutes. That could cause you to miss your cruise!
Instead, continue north and take the Kerper Blvd Exit. At the traffic light, turn right, then turn left onto 16th Street. Be in the right lane, and turn right onto Admiral Sheehy Dr, and then take the next right turn to arrive in our parking lot. On this route, the road takes you over the railroad tracks avoiding the possibility of being delayed by a train!
Please tell us that you are bringing the little ones.
Babies are people too.
We happily let children 3 years of age and younger take a ride free of charge, but they are counted as a passenger just like paying customers. So, when you make reservations, please inform us if you have that little bundle of joy so we can add them to our passenger list!

These Cruises May Be the Best Way to See Fall Foliage
Sit back and enjoy the views.
On fall foliage road trips , the journey is the destination, but why not make the journey as carefree and hands-off as possible? Hop aboard a leaf-peeping cruise with American Queen Voyages , and you can skip the navigating, route planning, and long hours of driving. Instead, your adventure could look like sailing between quaint towns with stunning fall foliage and plenty of time to explore at stops along the way.
Nothing officially separates an American Queen Voyages leaf-peeping cruise from a non-leaf-peeping cruise; what sets it apart is simply the time of year in which it takes place. Book a fall sailing and you can hit the best leaf-peeping spots at peak season — and do it from the cozy stateroom of your small-ship river or ocean cruise for a unique experience.

One option is the Montreal to Chicago route, which hits Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the southern Canadian coast, including overnight stays in Toronto and Mackinac Island . But you’ll have to plan pretty far in advance, as the September 2022 voyage has passed, with the next one slated for September 2024.
Boston to Saint John, New Brunswick , sails twice in October 2022 and twice in October 2023. Along this route, you’ll catch classic New England fall foliage from the water while cruising along the coast. The fiery fall colors of Bar Harbor, Maine, contrasting with the steep granite cliffs of the Acadia National Park region is a sight to behold toward the end of the journey.
While the New England area is a crowd favorite for fall foliage, the Pacific Northwest has some gorgeous seasonal scenery, too, and the Spokane to Portland route has available dates through November 2022 (and into 2023 and 2024 as well).
As the four-deck American Empress — the largest overnight riverboat west of the Mississippi — sails along the Columbia River, the vivid colors are never out of sight for long; every day, passengers will find themselves surrounded by spruce and pine forests, rolling vineyard hills, or groves of cherry trees. Best of all, each stateroom comes with a window, and many also have a veranda for your own private viewing of one of nature’s best shows. And when you disembark in Portland, make sure to check out the Portland Japanese Garden for yellows, oranges, and reds straight out of a storybook.
Fall Adventures in the Quad Cities
The fall season brings new colors to the trees as Mother Nature dips her paintbrush into the vibrant reds, golden yellows, and brilliant oranges for the Midwest. Spend a scenic weekend in the Quad Cities enjoying the beautiful colors along the Mississippi River. Find out when the peak color will be happening in the Quad Cities using the weekly Fall Color Report .
A Quad Cities favorite, the Celebration Belle riverboat, offers a wide variety of Mississippi River cruises this fall. The Fall Foliage Cruise sets sail during September and October. Sit back and enjoy the big and bold Mississippi River for a four-hour cruise filled with beautiful fall scenery. You can choose from all-day cruises, two-day trips, and lunch cruises. Be sure to book your reservation now for any one of the amazing Mississippi River cruises that the Celebration Belle provides. For more information and to make reservations, contact 800-297-0034 or visit celebrationbelle.com .
The Riverboat Twilight also offers two-day cruises and a one and a half-hour sightseeing cruises through the end of October. The cruises depart from LeClaire, Iowa, and go to Dubuque during the two-day cruises. Passengers stay overnight in Dubuque at a hotel. The next morning, go to the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium before returning back to picturesque town of LeClaire—home of the History Channel’s American Pickers. For more information and to make reservations, contact 800-331-1467 or visit riverboattwilight.com
The Mississippi River’s water trails are great for seasoned paddlers. For those looking for calmer currents, the Rock River is a fun alternative, too. The Sylvan Slough is a beautiful backwater of the Mississippi River in downtown Moline that’s removed from the main channel and great for all skill levels. Learn more about QC water trails here .
Not much of a water person?
Enjoy the Mississippi River from a different point of view by riding a bike alongside it. Residents and visitors alike can pedal their way down the paved paths near the Mississippi River. There are many trails to choose from, such as the 60-mile long Great River Trail in Illinois or the 10.5-mile Duck Creek Trail in Iowa. Biking around the Quad Cities is a great way to become familiar with places to see and eat and drink in the area or just to see the scenery.
For off-trail adventure, the Quad Cities has many designated mountain bike trails maintained by the Friends of Off-Road Cycling . Sylvan Island in Rock Island, Illinois, is great for quick, easy rides. It is of moderate difficulty with few hills, but enough of a single track-type ride to keep it interesting. An 11-mile trail is in Scott County Park in Long Grove, Iowa, and it starts at Pride Lake. There are a couple different loops for riders to follow. Sunderbruch Park on Davenport’s west side has about seven miles of hiking and mountain biking trails from green to black diamond levels of difficulty. Illiniwek Park in Hampton, Illinois, is one of the newest of the FORC trail systems with the greatest elevation changes and greatest flowing corners in the area.
Want something more slow-paced?
At the Black Hawk State Historic Site there are four miles of hiking trails through the forest that you can explore anytime during daylight hours. See how one of our blogger s explored this ancient forest that was once home to the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes.
Scott County Park, with 1280 acres, is the largest in Scott County, Iowa. Scott County Park has twelve picnic areas and shelters with tables, grills and/or fireplaces accessible. It offers a baseball field, playground equipment, a radio-controlled airplane site, nature trails, an equestrian area and five unique camping areas, including cabins and some deluxe “glamping” cabins. You can also explore the Dan Nagle Walnut Grove Pioneer Village.
With more than 1,000 acres, Loud Thunder Forest Preserve in Rock Island County offers the visitor a variety of recreational activities including camping, equestrian and hiking trails, picnicking, boating, boat rentals, fishing, cross country skiing, or just enjoying the outdoors.
Go for a drive to see the fall foliage
Driving on tree-lined highways along the river is a great way to see the million of different fall colors in Mother Nature’s palette. The Great River Road parallels the Mississippi River on the Illinois side and the Iowa side and winds its way through the Quad Cities on its way from Minnesota to Louisiana. Green and white pilot wheel highway markers show you the way along the Great River Road National Scenic Byway that showcases the dramatic landscape of the Mississippi River.
Visit the historic Iowa riverfront towns of LeClaire and Muscatine just outside the Quad Cities. On the bluffs of the Mississippi River, each town has breath-taking views overlooking the river and unique downtowns to explore.
Round out the weekend with a trip to a pumpkin patch to pick out the perfect jack-o-lantern and pick some apples to eat on the way home. Find our list of the perfect pumpkin patches in the Quad Cities .
All this makes autumn the perfect time to fall in love with the QC.
