Away from Home on the Range: 8 Farms to Visit in Illinois

Jun 28, 2018 • Eat & Drink

From apple orchards to pumpkin patches, find farms to visit in Illinois all year round.

Located in the heart of the Midwest, Illinois is home to quaint rural towns and plenty of peaceful countryside. And that means lots of farms that are open to the public for an afternoon spent petting animals, tasting freshly made cheese, or picking your own fruit right from the source.

For trip ideas that take you from the interstate to a farm gate, here’s 8 farms in Illinois to visit—all of which make for a relaxing day in the country.

Use the map below to visit farms from this article, or   search for even more Illinois Farms & Orchards .

Two wheels of cheese made by Marcoot Jersey Creamery in Greenville

Marcoot Jersey Creamery

If you visit   Marcoot Jersey Creamery   in Greenville, chances are that you’ll leave with a full belly and a new appreciation for dairy farming. The Marcoot family milks 65 Jersey cows twice every day and makes 18 varieties of cheese and a dozen seasonal flavors of ice cream (we’re partial to the black raspberry pomegranate).

While Illinois made cheese, milk, clove honey, and beer cheese retail items are worth the trek alone you would be remiss not to take one of the farm and creamery tours. For $3 per person you get a behind-the-scenes look at the milking parlor, calf barn and cheese-making process.

Eckert’s Country Store and Farms

One of the largest you-pick apple and peach orchard in the country, Eckert’s Country Store and Farms welcome 500,000 agritourists each year at its locations in Belleville, Millstadt, and Grafton. Eckert’s Millstadt and Grafton retail farms, open seasonally, focus on apples and pumpkins.

Belleville is the heart of the family business, though, where its year-round operations include a gourmet specialty food store, 200-seat restaurant, ice cream shop, and lawn-and-garden center. Customers select from seasonal homegrown peaches, apples, pumpkins, strawberries, blackberries, tomatoes, and Christmas trees.

A vibrant blue grapevine

Sleepy Creek Vineyards

Sleepy Creek Vineyards has a 10-acre vineyard, and makes wine on-site from their own grapes, as well as with fruit from other growers. Located just 30 miles from Champaign-Urbana, and 2 hours from Chicago and Indianapolis, Sleepy Creek hosts daily wine tastings. You can also make an appointment to tour the winery, and even reserve a room in their B & W (bed and wine) located right above the winery.

Be sure and take some time to relax near their beautiful pond and browse their gift shop where wine, local cheeses, and other snacks and gifts are available.

Learn more about Sleepy Creek Vineyards.

The Great Pumpkin Patch

You won't find Charlie Brown in the   The Great Pumpkin Patch , but you will find over 300 varieties of pumpkins, squashes, and gourds from all over the world. The Great Pumpkin Patch is run by Mac Condill, a 5th generation farmer, who with his wife Ginny also own The Homestead Bakery and Homestead Seeds.

Every autumn The Great Pumpkin Patch offers many forms of "agri-tainment," including various mazes, a children's garden, conifer garden, music, food (pumpkin pies, bread, cookies, muffins and more), plus friendly goats, pigs, exotic chickens, rabbits, a llama and an alpaca. The Great Pumpkin Patch is located near the scenic Amish communities of Arthur and Arcola.

Containers of pure maple syrup

Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup Farm

Located near the midpoint of Illinois’ portion of Route 66 in Shirley, you can visit   Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup   farm and learn how maple trees are tapped in the spring and how maple syrup is made. Syrup season at this multi-generational family business typically begins in mid-February or March, lasting from four to six weeks. Using about 7,000 spouts, or “taps,” the Funk family draws sap from 3,000 sugar maple trees.

Fear not: tapping doesn't hurt the trees. In fact, the same stand of trees in the grove have generously shared their sap with the family for generations. The family makes about 2,000 gallons of the sweet stuff each season and sell it until the supply is depleted, usually August or September. After that? They close up shop until the following season. So what’s with the spelling? Family ancestor Hazel Funk Holmes, who took the reins of the company in the 1920s, wanted the family’s sirup to be spelled with an “i,” which was the preferred spelling back then.

Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch

Hardy's Reindeer Ranch   is known for its herd of Alaskan reindeer, but also features hay rides, paintball, pedal race cars, and the "Jack Splat Pumpkin Cannon." Located in the countryside near Rantoul, Hardy's also has a Christmas tree farm and a 10-acre corn maze. For added fall fun—and spookiness—they offer “Moonlight Madness" entrance to the corn maze where you work your way through the corn maze solely by by the light of the moon.

Crawfish, Cranberries, and Cannabis: U.S. Farm Tours You Should Take

Crawfish, Cranberries, and Cannabis: U.S. Farm Tours You Should Take

Dovetailing with a booming interest in farm-to-fork eating, agritourism—wherein guests stay at or tour farms or other agriculturally related ventures—is a burgeoning sector of the travel industry. While you may not be ready to spend a summer herding sheep in Italy with WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), there are countless opportunities closer to home to learn more about where food comes from and who grows it. What follows are six insightful U.S. farm tours offering a behind-the-scenes look at modern agriculture, from organic cranberry farming in Cape Cod to goat milking in South Carolina.

Visitors to Ostlie’s in North Dakota can learn about hops, hardneck garlic, and haskap berries during a tour.

Ostlie’s Sunnyside Acres Carrington, North Dakota

Lindsay and Mike Ostlie may grow haskap berries and hardneck garlic at their Sunnyside Acres farm in Carrington, two hours northwest of Fargo, but their hops are the real stars of the show. The couple sells most of its lupulin harvest to Fargo Brewing Company for use in its Farm Fresh beer ; the rest goes to Laughing Sun in Bismarck, Kilstone Brewing in Fargo, and various Dakotan home brewers. Day-trippers tour the couple’s vintage granary and sustainable hopyard, learning the many ins and outs of hops production along the way. Mike studied Crop & Weed Sciences in college, so he can really get in the weeds on the technical stuff (pun intended). Ostlie’s Sunnyside Acres is open for tours from June to September; reservations are required.

Cape Farm Supply & Cranberry Company Harwich, Massachusetts

Husband and wife Leo and Andrea Cakounes love showing guests around Cape Farm Supply & Cranberry Company , their organic cranberry bog—the largest on Cape Cod—and explaining the many ways that harvesting this native North American fruit differs from what you’ve seen in the Ocean Spray commercials. (You won’t be up to your knees in floating cranberries, for one; the bogs are only flooded during harvest season and that step lasts about 24 hours.) Andrea leads the 90-minute group tours, which dive deep on the growing process while weaving in humorous stories about working on the bog. Raising cranberries is a year-round endeavor, but tours are offered in spring, summer, and fall only. Sweet-tart souvenirs such as cranberry sauce, sweetened dried cranberries, and cranberry bog honey are for sale at the on-site farm stand.

Burden Creek Dairy John’s Island, South Carolina

This charming Lowcountry goat dairy, located about 25 minutes from downtown Charleston, is a two-man operation—and both of these men were doing something different a few years back. Chris Maher was a chef before he became the cheesemaker-in-chief. Danny Sillivant was a real estate agent turned head herdsmen. They teamed up in 2017 and took over the Burden Creek Dairy , along with its herd of 30-something goats. Trixie, Edna, Pebbles, and the rest of the caprine gang are now considered to be their family, and the duo offers two-hour farm tours that travelers can book year-round via Airbnb Experiences , inviting them to try their hand at goat milking, to cuddle and bottle-feed the kids, and to sample some of the farm’s primo artisanal soft cheeses. (John’s Island Green, a chèvre made with garlic and seasonal herbs, and Sweet Sunset, a pineapple-mango goat cheese coated with chili powder, receive rave reviews.)

Crawfish Farm Tours Jeff Davis Parish, Louisiana

Although some crawfish are caught in local swamps and bayous, far more are raised on freshwater farms deep in Acadiana, the southern region of Louisiana that has historically been home to the Francophone population. From March through May, the Jeff Davis Parish Tourist Commission leads crawfish farm tours to Tietje Crawfish Farm in Roanoke, set on a 65-acre pond about 90 minutes west of Baton Rouge, to showcase the wee crustaceans’ preferred habitat. (They don’t call ’em mudpuppies for nothing.) Visitors remain dry on a dock while waders-clad farmer Burt Tietje gives his spiel while standing knee-deep in mucky water. After learning about pond ecology, the dietary preferences of crawfish, and harvesting, guests are ferried to the I-10 Crawfish Cooperative to learn how crawfish are cleaned, graded, distributed, and marketed. The tour ends with a brief stop at Gator Chateau in Jennings, too, an alligator farm where guests have an opportunity to hold and hand-feed rescued baby gators.

Humboldt Cannabis Tours Eureka, California

Unlike some marijuana-centric tours, which are more about getting high than higher education, the immersive half-day excursions led by Matt Kurth, CEO of four-year-old Humboldt Cannabis Tours , focus on the history and science of legal cultivation throughout Northern California’s “Emerald Triangle,” the largest cannabis-producing region in the nation, consisting of Mendocino, Humboldt, and Trinity counties. Travelers can reserve their spots on a customized daylong farm tour based on their personal interests, visiting with commercial growers and/or manufacturers of cannabis concentrate. The informative outings offer a front-row seat to sustainable cultivation, dissecting every step from seeding and harvesting to trimming and curing. In addition to touring working farms, guests can splice in a cannabis-oil massage, a cooking lesson with a cannabis-friendly chef, visits to local dispensaries, or stops at some of the surrounding redwoods’ most beautiful natural settings. (Before he got into cannabis tourism, Kurth spent a decade working as a wilderness expedition leader.)

James Ranch Durango, Colorado

For the general-interest traveler heading through southwestern Colorado, the 2.5-hour tour of family-run James Ranch , just north of Durango, offers a fine overview on organic farming. Namesake cofounder Dave James tours groups of eight guests or fewer around his property in an electric vehicle, narrating the entire visit. He’ll show you where his cattle graze, often alongside wild elk, and then take you to his on-site dairy to demo how the cows get milked and the cheeses get made. Other farm animal sightings might include hens, turkeys, and pigs. And no tour is complete without picking up a few souvenirs from the James Ranch market, which sells homemade jams and ice cream, grass-fed beef, raw-milk cheese, and farm-fresh eggs. Reservations are required, and guided tours are offered from July through the end of August.

Omsk: Garrison city on the Irtysh

farm to tour near me

All photos by William Brumfield

Omsk, currently a city of around 1 million, was founded in 1716 as a fort on the middle reaches of the Irtysh River.  During the 18th century, its primary purpose was to protect Russia's southern border and establish authority over the aboriginal steppe tribes.

Although administratively subordinate to Tobolsk  throughout the 18th century, Omsk gained increasing power in the 19th century.  From 1808 until 1917, Omsk served as the headquarters of all Siberian Cossack troops, and in 1822 a separate Omsk Province was formed. Shortly thereafter, construction began on the Cossack Church of St. Nicholas (1833-1840), based on a plan by the noted Russian architect Vasily Stasov.  The St. Nicholas Church, which has been splendidly restored, became the repository of one of the area's great relics, the banner of Yermak, cossack conqueror of Siberia

This strong military presence also connected Omsk with the notorious Siberian exile system.  The most famous of the fortress's exiles was the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, condemned in 1849 for associating with the "radicals" in St. Petersburg.  In January 1850 Dostoevsky arrived under guard at the Omsk fort, and for the better part of three years (1850-54), he lived the harrowing existence of a convict sentenced to hard labor, which included unloading barges on the Irtysh River. When his health broke under the physical and psychological strain, Dostoevsky was hospitalized under the care of a sympathetic medic.  It was during his stay in the infirmary that Dostoevsky began the writing of one of his seminal works, “Notes from the House of the Dead.” A few buildings still survive from that time, including one of the fortress gates, a few warehouses, and the hospital.

During the latter part of the 19th century, Omsk began a period of heady expansion, as the town became a transportation center for Russia’s vast interior. Regular steamboat service along the Irtysh River to Tobolsk began in 1862, but it was the railroads that made Omsk a boomtown. In 1894-95 Omsk was linked by the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Chelyabinsk in the west and Novonikolaevsk (later Novosibirsk ) in the east. In 1913, another rail line was completed from Omsk to Tyumen  in what would become the new Siberian mainline. By the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Omsk had tripled, to over 60,000 inhabitants.

This development as a transportation nexus led to a surge in the city's commercial district.  What had formerly been a provincial garrison town consisting primarily of wooden structures punctuated with several large churches now became a preeminent site for banks, educational institutions, industry and retail trade in Siberia.  In addition to branch offices for major banks and firms in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Omsk received investment from companies in the United States, Germany, and Great Britain.  The central part of Omsk had structures whose design rivaled Moscow's business district. Many of the new commercial buildings were built in styles derived from the Florentine Renaissance.

During the First World War, strategically located Omsk grew still further, and by 1917 the city’s population reached 100,000. Following the October Revolution, Bolshevik power was proclaimed almost immediately; but with little local support, the Bolsheviks were driven from the city in June 1918. Opposition to the Bolsheviks was fatally divided, and in November 1918, a military coup installed a dictatorship headed by Admiral Alexander Kolchak (1874-1920), who was a renowned polar explorer and gifted naval commander, but incapable of dealing with the chaos of the Russian civil war. For almost a year, Omsk could be considered the “capital” of the White forces, and the mansion where Kolchak had his headquarters is a prominent landmark. In November 1919 Kolchak’s forces were driven from Omsk. In 1921 Omsk became one of the centers of the American Relief Agency during the terrible Volga area famine.

With its economy shattered and the countryside still in chaos, Omsk struggled through the 1920s, only to achieve some industrial growth in the 1930s. Like many Siberian cities, it expanded rapidly during the Second World War, both as an evacuation haven and as a center of transportation and production.  Major development of the city’s military-industrial complex continued after the war, and by the end of the 1970s, the city's population exceeded 1,000,000—a benchmark of major significance. Omsk also became a center of the oil and gas industry.

Despite the social dislocation and contradictions of post-Soviet Russia, contemporary Omsk remains an important economic and industrial center.  It has a strong university (opened in 1974) and one of the largest regional libraries in Siberia. The city's expansion has occurred along the Irtysh River, thus creating a stretched plan with large distances between the various districts. Construction began on a subway in 1996, but work has been delayed, and the first line is not scheduled for completion until 2017. Omsk also has an international airport near the city center. The building of a new airport at a safer distance outside the city is proceeding slowly.

Fortunately, the historic center is rebounding, with its early 20th-century commercial district of imposing offices and shops.  There is a lively club scene, as well as a number of large theaters.  Omsk also supports diverse religions.  In addition to reopened Orthodox churches, the city contains a synagogue, mosques (the administration of the Imam of Siberia is in Omsk), and a large Baptist church, to list only a few. The reconstruction of the city’s main Orthodox church, the Cathedral of the Dormition (built in the 1890s and demolished in 1935) was completed in 2007.

Omsk continues to face the challenges of uneven economic development. But with proper investment and management, this Siberian powerhouse is poised to combine new levels of prosperity with a thriving cultural and intellectual life.

What You Need To Know!

Please read before booking

Our farm tours are relatively simple:

The tour involves about a ¼ mile walk through hilly terrain and gravel pathways creating a horseshoe shape through 7 different paddocks or fields. This gives our visitors the opportunity to see, and interact with the Scottish Highland cattle no matter what field they are occupying. Some of the fencing is electric, so please do not touch the wires.

During the winter/early spring months our weaning fields will be light.  During the summer months adults are typically in the shade by 10am-4pm.  To  try and ensure you get the date you want, we recommend booking as soon as you can!

Payment is due at the time of booking online.

We do not have public restrooms.  This is our personal farm, please be respectful in all areas.

Children aged 18 and under must be under the supervision of an adult.

We generally do not go inside any of the paddocks with our adult highlands.  This is for the safety of both you and our Highlands.

On this tour, we will make every effort to let you feed treats to the cows, have hands on interaction with the calves *when available*, and take lots of selfies and videos.   We cannot control the mood of the animals, so no guarantees on the level of interaction they will allow.

Photos and videos are for personal use only. No  commercial use.

Plan to leave here a little dirty, with some slobber on your pants, and your heart filled with lots of love!

Farm life is full of life. Among other friendly farm animals, we milk 115 mature cows on our farm plus the youngstock. Words we live by, as farmers ..

These beliefs guide us day in and day out, from sunup to sundown. If you have a moment, please read. Who knows? Maybe they’ll inspire you to go out and live off the land like we do.

I believe a man’s greatest possession is his dignity, and that no calling bestows this more abundantly than farming.

I believe hard work and honest sweat are the building blocks of a person’s character.

I believe that farming, despite its hardships and disappointments, is the most honest and honorable way a man can spend his days on this earth.

I believe farming nurtures the close family ties that make life rich in ways money can’t buy.

I believe my children are learning values that will last a lifetime and can be learned in no other way.

I believe farming provides education for life and that no other occupation teaches so much about birth, growth, and maturity, in such a variety of ways.

I believe many of the best things in life are indeed free: the splendor of a sunrise, the rapture of wide-open spaces, the exhilarating sight of your land greening each spring.

I believe true happiness comes from watching your crops ripen in the field, your children grow tall in the sun, your whole family feel the pride that springs from their shared experience.

I believe that by my toil, I am giving more to the world than I am taking from it, an honor that does not come to all men.

I believe my life will be measured ultimately by what I have done for my fellowman, and by this standard I fear no judgment.

I believe when a man grows old and sums up his days, he should be able to stand tall and feel pride in the life he’s lived.

I believe in farming because it makes all this possible.

Cabot Creamery Co-op

farm to tour near me

Liberty Hill Farm is one of the voices representing the family farm owners of Cabot Creamery Co-operative. We take great pride in spreading the word about the great Cabot products to whoever will listen. Fortunately for us, the products speak for themselves. Cabot Cheddar Cheese has won every major award for taste and our Cabot Butter is a blue ribbon winner too.

Liberty Hill and Cabot Highlights Liberty Hill Farm participates in Cabot’s Open Farm Events held over the years and our story is available on Cabot’s website, among the online virtual farm tours . Beth and our cow, Larue, were featured in a Cabot Creamery Co-operative commercial that aired on TV.  View the Hug a Farmer video here. In December 2013 Beth went with other Cabot Farmers on the Cabot Creamery Co-operative Gratitude tour in New York City to tout the Cabot goods—singing their praises from the rooftops!

The One & Only Robeth Holstein Herd  Robeth —a combination of our first two names—is the coined prefix for our registered herd. Robeth Holsteins are known for their excellent genetics and have been honored with the Progressive Breeder Registry Award from the Holstein Association for the past 30 years. While the numbers vary, we generally have 320 head of animals all together: cows, calves and heifers, with 120 of those being the milking cows.

Good Cow Genes When we bought the farm from John Hunt, a premier dairy breeder in the 1920s and ’30s, he had a cow named Pearl—a direct descendent of the famous Maryland dairy herd named Dunloggin. Most of our current herd descends from Pearl. Our cows’ lineage has been traced back to the 1880s when they were imported from Holstein Friesland, an area between Germany and the Netherlands.

Sunrise Farms Is A Family-Owned Business With Deep Roots In the Valley.

The Miller family has been farming for generations. In 2003, Maynard Miller purchased the farm at the current location from the Yoder family who had already begun to implement sustainable farming practices and to retrofit the on-site 1940s mill for non-GMO feeds . Maynard saw Sunrise Farms as an opportunity to build a business that could employ his family and community members in a way that was consistent with his values. Taking care of the land and giving back to the community is at the heart of our family-owned and operated farm and mill. We’re proud to provide rewarding work, quality products and educational experiences to our community. Schedule your farm tour by contacting a member of our team today!

Great selection of natural and local products. I love the simplicity of this little store. If you’re visiting from out of town and want a small town experience- this is the place to go! Not too far from the cheese shop, so you can easily plan to go to both on one outing.

We moved to this area five years ago. We feel blessed to have Sunrise Farms in our life. I’ m confident the food I purchase from you is the best, and this gives us the assurance we need of eating healthy. Thank you…. also the honor system of placing money in box would be unheard of where we moved from! God bless you all, and “keep on-keeping on.”

The store is immaculate and their products displayed well and are easily accessible. I so appreciate this family run farm and even enjoy the dog that has often greeted me there. Highly recommend this store to everyone.

What would Texas be without its history of cattle drives, stockyards and cowboys? Maybe your tot isn't pretending to be a gunslinging vigilante (yet), but a visit to a local farm or ranch is practically a rite of passage ! Most of these offer more in the way of cuddling chickens and feeding goats, but you can get some first-hand experience horseback riding and cattle roping, too. Read on for some of our favorite farm destinations near HTX.

Best fall attraction:  Dewberry Farm

Dewberry Farm

And you can get your animal snuggles with chickens, goats, lambs and some of the farm’s resident pups.

Best for animal lovers:  Old MacDonald’s Farm

And visit in fall to take advantage of the great pumpkin patch and fall festivities. And did we mention all activities are included in the $12 admission ticket? Steal!

Best for history buffs:  George Ranch

George Ranch

George Ranch 10215 FM 762 Road Richmond, TX This historic spot is a real life working ranch in Fort Bend County, and while it has some of the traditional farm and ranch attractions, it’s great for history lovers and educational outings. During your visit, you’ll follow four generations of a single ranching family over 100 years through life in frontier Texas to World War II. There are four historic houses on site, with people dressed up to play historical figures and roles. You can ask them questions, watch them work with trades like blacksmithing, and learn about what life was like during the time period. You might even see some real cattle roping!

Best for berry picking:  P-6 Farms

P-6 Farms 9963 Pooles Road Montgomery, TX This farm in Montgomery is all about the fresh produce. In spring, head to Blooms and Berries for tons of kid-friendly attractions (train rides, farm animals and a tire mountain!) along with u-pick strawberries and blackberries and to shop a colorful farmer’s market. In fall, you won’t want to miss the corn maze and pumpkin patch and the “Field of Screams” if you’re brave enough! Summer farm camp gives you the chance to enroll your littles in a full week (or more) of hands-on, dirty farm fun.

Best for an immersive cowboy weekend: A visit to  Bandera, Texas

Bandera Texas with kids

The Cowboy Capital of the World, as it's known, is perfect if you're looking for a rustic getaway that's longer than a few hours. Just west of San Antonio, you'll find this little town full of dude ranches where you can go horseback riding, hiking, enjoy cookouts, two-stepping and more. Family favorites include Silver Spur Guest Ranch or  Flying L Hill Country Resort , both of which promise some trail riding and open-fire cookin' to make you feel like a real cowboy.
