“The last few years were such a period of confrontation for me, and it feels like it was at least to some degree for everyone,” Feist shared in a statement. “We confronted ourselves as much as our relationships confronted us. It felt like our relational ecosystems were clearer than ever and so whatever was normally obscured — like a certain way of avoiding conflict or a certain way of talking around the subject — were all of a sudden thrust into the light. And in all that reassessment, the chance to find footing on healthier, more honest ground became possible, and the effort to maintain avoidance actually felt like it took more effort than just handing ourselves over to the truth.”

Born 13 February 1976, Leslie Feist is a Canadian-American indie pop singer who is known individually as a vocalist and as part of band Broken Social Scene.

Though she made her solo career debut in 1999 with album “Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down)” Feist had previous experience as a singer and guitarist for various bands. She was the lead singer of punk band Placebo as a teen living in Calgary, Canada. Having damaged her voice from singing so loudly and forcefully with punk rock music, Feist moved to Toronto the following year to rest her vocal instrument. She played bass for alternative rock band hHead and then rhythm guitar for the band By Divine Right. Before the release of her first album she was featured on several Peaches songs and also collaborated with Gonzales.

Gonzales inspired Feist to move to Europe and, whilst in Paris, Feist appeared as a guest vocalist on Norwegian music group Kings of Convenience’s album. She sung and recorded her second album “Let it Die” in 2002 and supported her work by touring the next few years. The album won Feist a nomination in Canada as “Best New Artist” at the Canadian Grammy awards.

Feist reached international fame with the album “The Reminder” released in 2007. The single “1234” was inspired by her participation as a performer in the opening ceremony of the Calgary Winter Olympics at age twelve. The song was featured as the song in an iPod nano commercial in 2007. Her song "Mushaboom" was on the soundtrack of feature film "500 Days of Summer."

Critics have compared Feist to singers like Norah Jones and Ella Fitzgerald. During an interview with NPR in 2007 Feist revealed her music is inspired by Toni Morrison’s writing and the color indigo blue.

Live reviews

WOW. What a night. Slow dancing on stage. Dancing in the stalls in the unusually seated Shepherds Bush Empire.

An absolutely fabulous show from the wonderfully talented Canadian Feist.

Plenty of material from the new album Pleasure.

From the opening guitar riff on set opener Pleasure its evident that the songs have a much heavier feel than the album and highlights what a great guitarist she is.

We get more songs from the album i wont list them all a couple from Metals, 3 from Reminder and 1 from Let it Die. Plus 3 others a 2 hour set filled with love, anger , and some beautiful vocal moments and to top that an appearance by the man himself Jarvis Cocker on the track Century. The roof was being blown off the Empire.

She had the audience from the off. Florescent opening fans and a rotating globe of hanging percussion bits and pieces and a bank of Florescent tubes behind to light up the skys.

She is a great performer( even though she sometimes looks awkward when moving around the stage) and there was plenty of interaction with the crowd.

This was no nonsense Folk/Rock/Pop/Indie call it what you will there for me was never a dull moment.

Her vocal performance was one of beauty especially when it was tracked and you had a bank of vocals ringing around the old Empire walls.

She seems to be able to sing in all styles and this really comes across live far more than on record.

The show was over all to quickly.

She came on for an encore which ended with 1234 she left the band onstage and disappeared out the door. Wonderful.

This is one of the best gigs ive been to this year. Top quality performance from all of her band. Great violinist by the way.

Leslie Feist isn’t really known in Britain for her prodigious touring schedules, so it tends to be the bigger rooms she’s playing when she does make it over; that, in itself, provides the Canadian with a unique problem. A sense of intimacy has long been crucial to her recorded output - particularly on key albums Let It Die and The Reminder - and replicating that in yawning theatres is likelier easier said than done. Not that she makes it look particularly difficult, though; on her last UK jaunt, in support of the criminally-underrated Metals, she put together a terrific live band that included vocal trio Mountain Man. The new tracks - many of which, like ‘Graveyard’, ‘A Commotion’ and ‘Undiscovered First’ - sounded thrillingly huge, thumping percussion providing an anchor for group vocals, but the decision to huddle the extensive live lineup around the centre of the expansive stages proved a masterstroke; when the classics were aired - ‘I Feel It All’, or a reworked version of ‘Mushaboom’ - you felt like you could have been watching them in the back of a bar. So impressively did Feist pull off that delicate balance on her last tour, in fact, that it almost seems a travesty that we don’t get a chance to bear witness to it too often; with any luck, she won’t leave it quite so long before she returns.

Considered to be one of the iconic female vocalist of our time, Leslie Feist has gained both critical and commercial success since her career began in the late 90's following the release of 'Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down)'. The Canadian songstress is a true believer of quality over quantity as with a career that has spanned over 15 years, she has only released four studio albums.

This is good news for her fans as there is a likelihood you will hear tracks from your preferred album. As Feist appears onstage, the cheers from the audience gives you the impression she could play anything from her discography and the fans would be delighted. Demonstrating her abilities with her guitar during the first two tracks 'Undiscovered First' and 'A Commotion' the audience are attentive and clap, cheer and sing in all the right places.

She flies through an extensive setlist supported by her fantastic, on point live band. There is a lot of music taken from fourth LP 'Metals' including the single 'How Come You Never Go There' which the audience clearly love. The largest applause of the night go to encore of 'Limit to Your Love' which is a true moment of the evening.

My first encouter with Feist since on stage! I love her work since 2004, and saw her yesterday at the Tempodrom in Berlin. I was at first shocked to find out that there is a real person behind the voice. She is so funny, and moving, and close to her audience. The first half of the concert was all "Pleasure", which is a fine album, but there came so much more afterwards. It was a concert with seating, which is usually a reason for me not to go, but she invited us to the stage (and some of us even on the stage) at around half time. She made us all sing as promised, and everyone known at least a few lines from a Feist song. I think the most moving part for me was when she told us about a song that left her about 10 years ago (they did not part on good terms) and that recently stood at her doorstep. The song had been in the world for all that time, getting in fights, having sex, geting in more fights, having more sex. It looked very different from when it left her 10 years ago. Then she sang a wonderful slow version of "1234". Ach, what can I say. Unforgettable.

Fiest has one of the greatest female voices I've ever heard. With her soothing, jazz-flare tone she makes you feel calm, cool, and collected. Her incredible vocal abilities give you a feeling like no other. She vaguely sounds like a mixture of Norah Jones and Colbie Callait. From 'Gatekeeper' to 'Mushaboom', Fiest will always make you feel comforted and happy. She has the appeal of a young female artist with the capabilities of a distinguished and adorned older artist. With her elegant guitar playing, she fills you ears with an ever-pleasing sound. Without a doubt, you could never go wrong listening to Fiest.

That moment when Feist turned into a giant woman was amazing! The music was great too. Introduced to some new songs...

But in all, it was overshadowed by a bad experience with the ticketing service. Had some trouble at the door with a Ticketfly transfer gone wrong. I probably just won't buy tickets online anymore if this is how it's going to be in the future. If I can't get tickets at the door, I just won't go.

When Feist brings it she brings it like no other. Without any sort of fanfare, she played her new album, Pleasure, from start to end and then treated us to greatest hits from her previous studio albums. All of this mixed with some very creative lighting made for an unforgettable music experience.

Feist was pumped to play her hometown and put an extra special performance on! She showed the diversity of her talent to the pleasure of her audience. I was pleasantly surprised at the age range of the crowd. Great show and of course a great venue!

Leslie Feist is that kind of gifted artists for live performances. She can also hypnotise the audience and make them do whatever she wants, like learning lyrics that they didn't know before the concert or make germans get up and dance to her music ;)

MULTITUDES , FEIST’S FIRST ALBUM SINCE 2017, SET FOR APRIL 14 RELEASE

feist tour 2023

21 FEBRUARY 2023 (TORONTO, ON) – Today, Feist announced the Multitudes tour, which will feature the 11-time Juno Award winner performing in the round with 360-degree immersive sound. The production was conceived by Feist and developed with artist/filmmaker Colby Richardson, artist Heather Goodchild and Artistic Producer Mary Hickson.

The North American headline tour will kick off on May 2 at The Sylvee in Madison, WI and include shows at Radius in Chicago (May 5), 9:30 Club in Washington, DC and Brooklyn Steel in New York City (May 13). The artist ticket pre-sale will begin tomorrow, February 22, at 10:00 AM local time. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, February 24, at 10:00 AM local time. See below for itinerary or visit https://www.listentofeist.com/ .

Multitudes – Feist’s sixth full-length album and first release since 2017’s critically acclaimed Pleasure – will be released on April 14 via Interscope Records/Universal Music Canada. The new songs were largely written during an intensely communal 2021-2022 tour of the same name, which was hailed as a “work of genius” by the Toronto Star . The run included a three-night stand at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. After the tour, Feist retreated to Northern California’s Redwood Forest to record the album, which she produced alongside Robbie Lackritz (Peach Pit, The Weather Station, Bahamas, Jack Johnson, Robbie Robertson) and Mocky (Jamie Lidell, Vulfpeck, Kelela), who had partnered with her on 2011’s Metals .

Unveiled today, the official video for “In Lightning” captures Feist’s joyful performance of the song at the water’s edge on a deserted beach. She directed the video with Julia Hendrickson and Sara Melvin. View HERE . The New York Times’ Jon Pareles said, “She sings about lightning as illumination, as power and as revelation; is it ‘in lightning’ or ‘enlightening’? The track begins with clattering drums and banshee vocal harmonies, then veers between hushed contemplation and a brawny, Celtic-flavored stomp.” Pitchfork observed, “Feist talks of keeping her energy intact in a hectic world as strings zip by like a bug zooming in your ear...It all retains the common feeling in her music of pieces falling together, each element getting its own space to shine. The queen of controlled calamity has officially returned.”

Multitudes took shape soon after the birth of Feist’s daughter and the sudden death of her father. Amid meditations on mortality, connection and the frenetic state of the human condition, the album ultimately radiates an ineffable sense of hope. Fans who pre-order the digital edition of Multitudes will  instantly receive “In Lightning” plus two of the songs she performed in last week’s Valentine’s Day mini concert – “Hiding Out In The Open” and “Love Who We Are Meant To.”

Feist Announces “The Multitudes Finale Tour”

feist tour 2023

Today, Feist announced The Multitudes Finale Tour, which will feature the 11-time Juno Award winner performing in the round with 360-degree immersive sound. The production was conceived by Feist and developed with artist/filmmaker Colby Richardson, artist Heather Goodchild and Artistic Producer Mary Hickson.

Multitudes – Feist’s sixth full-length album and first release since 2017’s critically acclaimed Pleasure – was released on April 14 via Interscope Records. The new songs were largely written during an intensely communal 2021-2022 tour of the same name, which was hailed as a “work of genius” by the Toronto Star. The run included a three-night stand at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. After the tour, Feist retreated to Northern California’s Redwood Forest to record the album, which she produced alongside Robbie Lackritz (Peach Pit, The Weather Station, Bahamas, Jack Johnson, Robbie Robertson) and Mocky (Jamie Lidell, Vulfpeck, Kelela), who had partnered with her on 2011’s Metals.

The official video for “In Lightning” captures Feist’s joyful performance of the song at the water’s edge on a deserted beach. She directed the video with Julia Hendrickson and Sara Melvin. View HERE. The New York Times’ Jon Pareles said, “She sings about lightning as illumination, as power and as revelation; is it ‘in lightning’ or ‘enlightening’? The track begins with clattering drums and banshee vocal harmonies, then veers between hushed contemplation and a brawny, Celtic-flavored stomp.” Pitchfork observed, “Feist talks of keeping her energy intact in a hectic world as strings zip by like a bug zooming in your ear…It all retains the common feeling in her music of pieces falling together, each element getting its own space to shine. The queen of controlled calamity has officially returned.”

Multitudes took shape soon after the birth of Feist’s daughter and the sudden death of her father. Amid meditations on mortality, connection and the frenetic state of the human condition, the album ultimately radiates an ineffable sense of hope.

Feist 2024 Tour Dates: 02/06 Winnipeg, MB – Burton Cummings Theatre 02/07 Saskatoon, SK – TCU Place 02/09 Calgary, AB – Palace Theatre 02/11 Victoria, BC – Royal Theatre 02/12 Vancouver, BC – Commodore Ballroom 02/16 Seattle, WA – Showbox SoDo 02/17 Portland, OR – Wonder Ballroom 02/20 San Francisco, CA – The Fillmore 02/23 Los Angeles, CA – Belasco 03/03 Toronto, ON – Massey Hall

Underestimate at your peril … Feist at the Roundhouse, London.

Feist review – one of the best live shows of the year

Roundhouse, London The magnetic Canadian singer performs her perceptive songs of love and loss during a gig that is precisely choreographed but still feels intimate and vividly in the moment

L eslie Feist has made a career out of being underestimated. The Canadian indie-folk stalwart netted a ubiquitous, broad-based hit in 2007 with 1234 , a song featured in an iPod ad; to many, she is known simply as the “1234 singer”, and is frozen in time at that point in her career when she was making singalong folk-pop with striking dance videos. Those who stuck around for her subsequent albums – 2011’s arid Metals, the minimalist, bluesy 2017 album Pleasure, and this year’s fragmented, lightly electronic Multitudes – have witnessed first-hand her transformation into one of indie music’s most perceptive, penetrating songwriters. Her freeform songs of love and loss, delivered with a 200-grit sandpaper voice, feel like family heirlooms; objects whose stories become richer and more distinct every time you pick them up.

Feist’s tour in support of Multitudes plays on her tendency to be underestimated brilliantly. I’ve never seen a show quite like it, one which is so precisely choreographed and staged while still feeling so wildly, vividly real. It is a feat of sleight-of-hand that is spooky and psychedelic, utilising fairly commonplace performance tools – crowd work, a live video feed, minimalist staging, good old-fashioned charisma – to execute a masterful rug-pull from beneath the audience’s feet. It feels ridiculous to say in regards to a live show, but I’m a little afraid of spoiling the surprises the Multitudes tour has up its sleeve. The best guidance I can give is simply that you should see one of the tour’s few remaining dates for yourself, and find yourself caught off-guard by one of the most masterly rock shows I’ve seen in a long time.

Weaponised charisma … Feist.

Feist begins this show in the round, on a small stage in the middle of the audience. Carrying an iPhone that feeds back to a projection on the main stage, she walks through the crowd, zeroing in on coats and dresses, joking with the audience members she passes, eventually climbing on to her small podium and mounting the phone on a stand. Feist’s magnetism – her ability to make you feel like she’s speaking only to you as she cracks jokes about feeling like she’s performing at Wembley or speaks about the natural landscapes that got her through Covid – is weaponised here. It feels, as she runs through a handful of songs including early hit Mushaboom and Pleasure highlight A Man Is Not His Song on solo guitar, like a very traditional folk show, to the point that it’s easy to miss some of the set’s sly enhancements, such as Feist’s use of a loop pedal to harmonise with herself, or the way the video feed shimmers with distortion.

Early on, she calls for audience participation, asking someone to take the phone from her and walk around filming the venue and audience members. It quickly becomes clear that what seemed like an intimate, homespun show is actually far more complex: the cameraman steals a notebook from an audience member leading to a striking, unnerving recitation of a poem; Feist re-enters the audience, pretending to till a field and plant a tree as she sings I Took All of My Rings Off.

Halfway through the two-hour show, there is a dramatic, gut-punch curtain drop for the ages. All the while, Feist is performing beloved songs such as Any Party and My Moon My Man on a tightrope between wildness and precision, making it abundantly clear that even without the mysterious, magnetic stagecraft, it would be one of the year’s best live shows.

Feist 2023 Tour Announcement – Multitudes Tour Schedule

Feist 2023 Tour Announcement – Multitudes Tour Schedule

Feist is heading back on the road in spring 2023, and with some new songs in tow! The Canadian singer will kick off on May 2nd in Madison, WI, continuing through May 19th in Montreal, QC.

Supporting her upcoming sixth album, Multitudes , this Feist tour has been a long time coming. This will be her first new project in nearly six years, since 2017’s Pleasure , and the 47-year-old songstress can’t wait to perform a mix of classic Feist and modern indie pop. New songs like “In Lightning,” plus its super-majestic music video , show that she’s at the top of her game. “When in lightning flashes flash/And thunder loves me back,” she sings. “And in lightning/I can keep my energy intact/And when the lightning is like the sun/I feel what love could be.” It’s a powerful sentiment from one of the best indie-pop artists of our time, and it’s just the beginning of what we’ll hear on this Feist album.

And in all that reassessment, the chance to find footing on healthier, more honest ground became possible, and the effort to maintain avoidance actually felt like it took more effort than just handing ourselves over to the truth.” Is it a deep statement? Yes. Will it manifest itself into some of the best indie-pop songs of 2023? Absolutely. Feist lived up to her name all through the 2000s with indie-pop hits like “1234,” “I Feel It All,” and “My Moon My Man,” which was basically the soundtrack to 2007, and now she’s back with even more future party essentials. “In Lightning” is the only song she’s released so far from Multitudes , but you can expect to hear them all live on the upcoming Feist tour! Will you be there? Get your tickets now for the following dates.

Feist on the tour that became a record that became a tour again

A woman performs on a small circular stage holding an acoustic guitar while surrounded by speakers and an A-frame ladder in an otherwise-empty theater.

Throughout her twenty-something years as an artist, Canadian indie pop singer-songwriter Feist hasn’t shied away from dynamic shifts. Her latest album, Multitudes , is a multi-layered creature, formed and stretched from its unadorned foundation to its tippy-toes, where it shoots into the stratosphere with screams and stomps. Yet it truly reflects the time during which it was born.

Many of the tracks were brought to life during a pandemic-driven “song a day” challenge (inspired by a crew of like-minded musical peers). The writings that resulted rewind, review and expand on Feist’s experiences in recent years — the more hushed, searching moments of lockdown life, grappling with a semblance of normalcy; weathering the twists and turns of moving from Toronto to California; taking in motherhood; and losing her father unexpectedly. These new songs hold weight for Feist but also carry a collective weight the world can easily register.

Reinventing how to present her songs in a live setting to a smaller-by-necessity audience brought Feist connection and sustenance. Her vulnerability as a musician — and a human — got taken to a new level as her audience became literally immersed in her music, surrounding her on all sides (no stage, no stage lighting, complete with Dolby Atmos surround sound) to connect in a very human way.

The most unusual thing about this process? Feist recorded the album after completing her immersive and spatially oriented touring experience, connecting everything together — song-a-day-creations included — on one of her most tangibly human records to date.

I talked with Leslie Feist just before Multitudes ’ official release about Wisconsin memories (since she’s launching her upcoming tour from Madison), her very well-received new album and creating a wildly different concert experience

The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

You kick off your tour in Wisconsin of all places at The Sylvee in Madison on Tuesday, May 2. And I saw you perform at Eaux Claires Festival a few years back. I was wondering what was your favorite memory of performing at Eaux Claires?

A woman and three men pose inside of an arched wooden art installation with trees in the background.

That's a good question. My mind just had, like, eight images, one of which was seeing Mountain Man in the woods, on a tiny stage in the woods. I toured with them for so many years, and they’re sort of like sisters, and that was really amazing to get to see them do their thing again.

I remember watching Amelia and Nick — Sylvan Esso — who I hadn't seen since the rocket that got kind of tied to them and blasted them off, and it was so exciting watching Amelia just own that beautiful spotlight that she's worked so hard for.

And then our show. I remember glancing over and being completely immobilized by the fact that Paul Simon was leaning on a monitor at the side, kind of like this [mimes draping her arms over a monitor, head propped on her arms] with his chin on his hands. And he just hung out there smiling for, like, 45 minutes, and I almost felt like, “I can't do this. I can't. How am I supposed to do this?”

Honestly, probably [my] top two albums are Rhythm of The Saints and Graceland , so that was one of those Eaux Claires “wow” moments. I wanted to see John Prine, but it started pouring, which you recall, I guess.

Yeah, I was there. I was right in the middle of a field, and it was glorious. There was a lot of weather happening at that particular festival, as I remember.

So we're playing “Hiding Out In the Open” on 88Nine, and the song and the accompanying video that I've seen are just incredibly poignant and impactful. I was hoping you could share the story of the song to give our listeners a clearer picture of its genesis. Or is it something [where] you'd prefer that the song's message exists more universally?

It’s funny you should say that because in my own methodology or in what I've been seeking to get better at in being a songwriter is working to keep my subjective complete, like actually make it so unobscured for myself just in my own awareness.

Because of course I understand that once a song — or even literally speaking with someone, you never know what's actually landing in their mind because they're seeing through their own needs to glean the information that will touch and move them, you know? Songs are that to the umpteenth degree.

So I've worked on, speaking inwardly, keeping it very clear but then try my best to create a — not vague, but archetypically clear enough container that other people can find the universal or find their specifics in an expression of my specifics that I've tried to build universally, you know? It's kind of like a version of storytelling where I'm really close to the quick, but I'm trying to drain my specifics out so that people can find their own inside of it

I did write that song for a friend. There are a few songs on the record that I found helpful to point at people I love, and the pandemic was an epistolary time. I think a lot of us were writing our friends or just trying our best to reach out, maybe more than usual. And because of my own brief bursts of writing, I found it helpful to write and kind of offer it to close friends. So, yeah, I think I just spoke to their moment as best I could as the person who had observed it with compassion. [laughs]

I guess as an artist you're there to get your message out there and then try to have that message help others and reach out.

As songs have definitely done the same for me. Things that I don't know how to organize my mind around, and then a song will kind of help me find some path through.

How much of a hand do you have as a producer of your own art — like music and videos — and which element of Multitudes as both a project and an album is the most near and dear to your heart?

Well, Multitudes was also a tour before it became a record, and the tour was a real stretch for me and something I'd wanted to do for a long time, which was sort of thwart the expected setup of what a show is, what an exchange of audience and the person delivering the story and the people listening to the story is.

I've had some shows that just turn on their heel and become something so different than what that norm is. Sort of like a collective is created in which I'm receiving as much as I think people usually do when they're just in an audience, you know?

Those really are near and dear to me. I collect them in my mind as sort of like these apex moments, like a different, rarefied air of excitement that’s caused by certain pulling down of the barriers: psychic barriers, physical barriers. Sort of like, “Who's got the mic here?” Well, it's up to me to hand it over, you know? Every single person there has a whole universe inside them, and sometimes it can find its way into a collective experience.

So I tried to build a show that would have a lot of the teardown, a lot of the expectations. And it was such a moment when people were so fresh to sharing space with each other, let alone having their cells shook by high volume; having that kind of loud music experience was also — I think people were pretty tender, you know?

That show was made in an “uncharacteristic to what a normal tour is like” [way]. It was made in a collective where there was a visual artist named Colby Richardson and two other visual artists: Heather Goodchild and a creative producer from Ireland who I love who actually was one of the curators of the Eaux Claires Festival, Mary Hickson. I asked her to come and help me move toward theater and away from the rock construct.

That was a new experience to work where I felt that each person's contribution, if it was as important to them and they felt as actualized creatively in their own silo as I do musically, then exponentially we are all pushed to our edge of what we already know, into territory where we're caused to learn things about what we do.

A wide shot of a woman standing on a small stage performing for a group of people with a disco ball illuminating the theater with streaks of light.

We jokingly called it “the subjective collective” because we were all ourselves so singular, but then our selves were made stronger by working with one another that way. And so the music video you saw was plucked out of a little mini-concert made by that subjective collective that was using a lot of the effects and illusion elements that were in that live show. So that was, I think, really important for me to understand the strength in numbers, you know?

In the album sense, though, and the writing sense it's always a pretty solitary experience for me. I have always co-produced with and invited a couple of people who I felt could help me relax into my role by knowing that the other roles were filled by people who I similarly know are at their apex. So this record was made with two co-producers, Mocky and Robbie Lackritz, who gave me the space to feel free to do my part.

And it turned out absolutely beautifully. I love the orchestral qualities of the songs, and your vocal layers are just really arresting, so it was beautifully done.

I know I have you for a short time, so I just want to point out that you're coming to Wisconsin to kick off your tour at the Sylvee on Tuesday, May 2. What do you have in store for folks who are going to that show?

The tour that we did that sort of only belonged in that reduced-capacity, pandemic-type moment, it really felt like we were learning something. We kind of were establishing a vocabulary for the collective that had built that show.

We thought, “Well, this can't just be the end of that. How do we keep using that language in more of the — maybe as we all kind of try to reintegrate into what used to be? But can we bring a little bit of what we gathered when it couldn't be, can we bring that into the now?”

So the show is working with a little bit more of that unguarded, shifting of the context. And I guess it'll be as that tour was. This will be a moving target of variables to figure out what can work. So Wisconsin will be the very first people to be inside of that experience with us. And I guess we'll all see what happens. [laughs]

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

feist tour 2023

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

feist tour 2023

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
