Ålesund – History

FJORDS NORWAY - Ålesund in the old days

In the 18th century, the area around Ålesundet , including Brunholmen, was home to a few merchants. Cod fishing in the Borgundfjord was one of the reasons why there was permanent settlement in the Ålesund area at that time.

Ole Andreas Devold established a textile factory Devold in the center of Ålesund in the 19th century. Parts of the business were moved from Ålesund to Langevåg in 1868, and the factory in Ålesund burned down during the Ålesund City Fire in 1904. Devold is now Norway’s largest and most well-known clothing manufacturer of woolen clothes.

The city center of Ålesund got its current shape after the big city fire in 1904. This was one of the largest fires in Norway, and more than 800 houses burned down. Around 12,000 people became homeless.

From Brosundet, the canal that divides Ålesund in two. The brick buildings are built in the distinctive Art Nouveau style.

After the fire, the inhabitants received help from all over Norway and also from abroad. The German Emperor Wilhelm II was one of those who gave extra help to the reconstruction of Ålesund. Before the fire, the city center consisted almost exclusively of wooden buildings. The city was rebuilt in just three years and now consists mainly of brick buildings in the distinctive Art Nouveau style.

Here you can see a 360 panorama from Ålesund. At the bottom of the panorama, you will find navigation buttons that allow you to “travel” around and focus on places you want to take a closer look at. Some panoramas allow you to “jump” to other locations.

  • iberistacer 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Alesund Geiranger round trip Amazing fjord cruise We struck it lucky as Covid had shut down may travel options, but these guys were operating and offered exactly what we wanted. We had heard soo much about the Geirangerfjord but did not have alot of time as we travelled down the west coast of norway. Thankfully we got wind of this relatively new tour going from Alesund into the deep fjord 100km all by new luxury catamaran. We took it in and back out the same day but you can take it one way and spend time in Geiranger town itself. A real bonus was the excellent audio guide. It works on GPS, and as you pass by an area, this triggers the local stories and history of the people and places along the way. Incredible to think people lived on these remote places that you can still only get to by boat. We enjoyed getting very close to the long waterfalls as we closed in on the destination of Geiranger town. We had plenty of time to stretch the legs and explore the small town and grab an excellent lunch right by the harbour. After the kids and shopped for some souvenirs and of course visited the Chocolate factory, we jumped back on board to head back to Alesund to continue our journey down the coast. A great escape with so much to see. They say it shows you 3 fjords in 3 hours. Time seemed to go by pretty fast as the scenery is always changing. Very comfortable boat with a small kiosk shop for snacks and friendly staff. Highly recommended excursion. Read more Written March 30, 2021

Welcome to Ålesund — the adventure capital of the fjords!

Ålesund has a spectacular setting across several islands stretching out into the sea and is situated at the very entrance of the World Heritage-listed Geirangerfjord . Destroyed by a catastrophic fire in 1904, the town was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style with a myriad of towers, turrets, dragons, human faces, folkloric and medieval-romantic ornaments.

Ålesund was recently voted the most beautiful town in Norway.

Uniktur offers a wide variety of excursions and is an excellent starting point for round trips to some of Norway’s most spectacular sights like Geirangerfjord, Molde and Atlantic Road, Trollstigen (Trolls’ Path Road) and Runde Bird Sanctuary.

We start our shore excursion from Cruise ships Terminal, situated in the very center of the town.

Details about this scheduled guided day tour:

From the meeting point the bus will take you through the beautiful area outside Ålesund, to the land of the trolls. Throughout this excursion our guide will share many interesting facts and fascinating stories with you.

On the road to Sjøholt, you will pass the house of Ivar Åsen, founder of the Nynorsk language, the second language in Norway. This part of Møre og Romsdal is especially known for the furniture industry. From Sjøholt, the road along the Storfjord will lead you via Stordal and its Rose Church (built in 1789) to Valldal, famous for its delicious strawberries.

The next stop will be at the breathtakingly beautiful Gudbrandsjuvet, a 5 m narrow and 20-25 m deep ravine. You can walk over a bridge from one side of the ravine to the other. From here the bus will drive through the National Park Reinheimen, to the Trollstigen plateau. Enjoy the amazing view over the Troll Road (Trollstigen), the mountains the King, Queen and Bishop, as well as the waterfall Stigfossen. When driving down the Troll Road, the driver will safely drive the bus through 11 hairpin bends. At the bottom of the Troll Road, there will be an extra photo stop from where you will be able to take the best pictures of the Stigfossen.

Next up is a visit to the Troll Wall / Trollveggen, Europe’s tallest vertical rock face, and the impressive Romsdalshorn. After this stop, it is time to head back to Ålesund.

A closer look at Ålesund

Ålesund is a true hidden gem, unknown to many travelers to Norway. But this beautiful, peaceful town has plenty to offer visitors – let’s take a look at the many interesting aspects of Ålesund’s history, culture and natural experiences!

Where is Ålesund?

Located on the west coast of Norway, the municipality of Ålesund can be found in the traditional district of Sunnmøre. It’s a beautiful mixture of seaside, fjord-side, and mountainside landscapes with all of the local architecture built in the art nouveau style.

Frequently called The Art Nouveau Town , Ålesund was almost entirely rebuilt in this signature way after a fire in 1904. It’s a perfect example of a traditional Norwegian city with culture and nature existing side by side.

Ålesund is a particularly accessible city with Ålesund airport providing links from its location on the island of Vigra to the rest of the world. Once you’re there, the area is easy to get around and with minimal effort, you can visit the nearby islands and mountains via public transport or excursions. You will definitely want to take advantage of this as Ålesund has something for everyone to enjoy!

Ålesund and Fjords: The Geirangerfjord

If you’re planning a visit to Ålesund, you can’t miss a visit to the region’s stunning fjord. The Geirangerfjord is one of the most iconic fjords in Norway and is often said to be the most beautiful fjord in the world. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is one of the most visited tourist sites in Norway.

The scenery surrounding Geirangerfjord is defined by the steep-sided rock walls which reach up to 1,400m above sea level. The forests and woodlands which cover these walls make the whole area feel like something out of a fairytale. You can easily experience the Geirangerfjord from Ålesund on this spectacular fjord cruise .

The fjord’s waterfalls are a particular draw for visitors and provide a dramatic and impressive view. Two of the most notable waterfalls are "de Syv Søstre" (The Seven Sisters) and "Frieren" (the suitor/wooer) who face each other across the fjord. Locals will tell you that Friaren is trying to woo the sisters opposite him. The fjord is also flanked by deserted farms on the cliff sides which surround it which visitors can explore and get a feel for rural Norwegian life. To experience the waterfalls of the Geirangerfjord, check out the Seven Sisters Kayaking tour .

Active in Ålesund

If you are interested in seeing the city from a different perspective, there are several exciting kayaking trips on offer here. The Art Nouveau kayaking tour in Ålesund is the perfect trip for the inexperienced kayaker and a great way to get to know the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund. You can also go on a winter kayaking tour , or combine a Kayak and Hiking tour where you'll get the best from two worlds, exploring beautiful Ålesund from both the sea and the mountains.

Ålesund’s Coastline

Norway’s coastline as a whole offers some of the most dramatic and stunning views in Europe. Historically, Ålesund’s coast was the catalyst for its growth as a market town as merchants settled along the shore. The easy access to rich fishing banks and useful seaways led to the development of the port that still thrives today.

When you visit the harbor, keep a lookout for the picturesque landmark of Holmbua. This warehouse escaped the devastating fire of 1904 and now contains The Fisheries Museum. This is a nautical museum that explores the history and culture of the fishing way of life, and it’s well worth a visit for travelers to Ålesund.

This stretch of coastline is also a hotspot for wildlife. There are plenty of sea safaris on offer which will take you along the cliffs to spot hundreds of seabirds. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a sea eagle soaring above you, or a seal playfully swimming alongside your boat! You can also visit the famous bid island Runde, where over 500,000 birds come to nest between the months of April and August.

Hangout22-Alesund-9093_Fjord Norway:Mattias Fredriksson.jpg

Ålesund’s History

Holmbua isn’t the only museum that Ålesund has to offer! Make sure to visit The Art Nouveau Centre & the Art Museum to learn all there is to know about Ålesund’s classic facade. It’s located in the old Swan Pharmacy (Svaneapoteket) and is dedicated to showcasing authentic interiors and objects in the art nouveau style. It takes you through the history of the fire which almost destroyed the city and the process of rebuilding.

Another well-reviewed museum that many travelers flock to is Alnes Lighthouse on the island of Godøy. It is a protected building that embodies the heart of Norwegian coastal culture. It not only contains fascinating exhibitions but is also a hub for local souvenirs and handicrafts – so if you’d like to pick up a unique souvenir to take home with you, this is your chance to find the perfect item to remind you of Ålesund!

While you are in Ålesund you may hear people speaking of Ny-Ålesund, the world’s northernmost inhabited town. It’s located far from the main city of Ålesund since it lies in the northern archipelago of Svalbard . It was founded in 1916 when an Ålesund-based businessman bought the rights to mine the coal that was there. While the settlement is not officially linked with Ålesund, it is well worth adding to your to-visit list while you’re in Norway.

While Ålesund hasn’t traditionally seen as many visitors as certain other well-known Norwegian destinations, it’s well worth a visit. This true hidden gem of a town that offers everything you could ever want for a visit to Norway. Whether you are looking for art, culture, history, activities or nature - Ålesund has something for you to enjoy!
