Bergen - The heart of the fjords

The fjords are by far the biggest attraction in Scandinavia, and Bergen is the best starting point for exploring the nature visitors come from all over the world to see. Bergen is situated halfway between the two biggest fjords in Western Norway – the Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord and it also has a fantastic coastline with thousands of large and small islands.

An active fjord tour

Dive into the experience by combining your fjord tour with activities like or hiking  or  biking . Sognefjorden is Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, which also includes the Nærøyfjord, featured on the World Heritage List.

One of the many tours available from May to October is "Full Pack Fjord Tour from Bergen". This is a great option if you would like to pack in a lot in just one day! Beautiful train ride on the Flåm Railway, biking, fjord safari by RIB boat and rafting at Voss.

Half-day tours

If you would like to see the fjords but are short of time, the tour to Mostraumen is a great option. There are two different boats operating that route and you can find them both in the list of  shorter fjord cruises.

Guided fjord tour

Active and rewarding trip.

Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

Experience first-hand the power of Northern Europe’s largest waterfall Vøringsfossen and walk behind the gorgeous Steinsdalsfossen. Your waterfall adventure also includes a fjord cruise on the enchanting Hardangerfjord.

The Hardangerfjord is one of the most captivating fjord regions in Norway. Not only does it offer mighty glaciers, beautiful mountains, and lush orchards, but it also boasts an incredible number of epic waterfalls .

Tour description

Your Great Waterfall and Fjord Tour starts from either Bergen or Voss. From Bergen, you take a comfortable train journey to Voss and continue by bus through the beautiful Espelandsdalen valley to the charming fjord village of Ulvik.

A fjord cruise on the Hardangerfjord takes you from Ulvik to Eidfjord, where you take a sightseeing trip to (literally) the biggest highlight of the day; Vøringsfossen . This mighty waterfall has a drop of 182 meters and is flanked by several stunning lookout points. The lookout points are innovatively designed to let you feel the power of the cascading waters. And if you dare - you can even cross the waterfall on a bridge!

On your way back to Eidfjord there will be a 1 hour stop at the Norwegian Nature Center . This is an exciting experience center for Norwegian nature, climate and environment. From Eidfjord you continue your fjord cruise on the Hardangerfjord. The fjord's sides are covered with several beautiful waterfalls supplying water to fruit orchards producing some of the world's finest ciders.

From Norheimsund you travel back to Bergen, but not before stopping at the family favorite Steinsdalsfossen. This is an amazing waterfall you can actually walk behind !

Tour Highlights

The Vøringsfossen Waterfall

The Vøringsfossen Waterfall is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Norway. The 182-meter tall waterfall is a mighty sight to behold, and the foaming water from the Hardangervidda mountain plateau cascades into the lush Måbødalen valley.

In 2020, a unique stair bridge over the waterfall was opened, which makes it possible to cross the canyon in 99 steps, a walk that is guaranteed to give you some butterflies in your tummy! The bridge, installations, and viewing platforms are great examples of innovative architecture combined with beautiful nature.

Steinsdalsfossen

The Steinsdalsfossen is located just outside Norheimsund by the Hardangerfjord. The wild and impressive waterfall is quite unique as you can walk behind it without getting wet. Standing «under» the roaring water gives you a real close encounter with nature! The waterfall is one of Norway’s most photographed waterfalls and a popular spot for Instagrammers.

The Steinsdalsfossen was also a favorite of Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany who visited Steinsdalsfossen almost every summer in the early 1900s.

The Hardangerfjord

The 179-kilometer-long Hardangerfjord will spellbind even the most well-traveled tourists. You will experience scenic fjord villages nestled in tradition and heritage, living alongside innovative new industries such as fish farms and hydropower plants.

What is the tipping policy in Norway ?

Tipping in Norway is not compulsory. However, you can leave a 10-20% tip in restaurants and bars if you are happy about the service. It's uncommon to tip taxi-drivers or cleaning staff at hotels.

What is the best time to go to Norway?

The high season in Norway is between mid-June and August. However, the best time to visit Norway is during the shoulder seasons, between May and June, and between September and October, when the weather is very pleasant and there aren't that many tourists.

Closed boat Fjord Adventure | Nuuk

Explore one of the most spectacular parts of the world’s second-largest fjord system on this 2 hour Nuuk Fjord adventure.

Leaving from the Colonial Harbour in the historic area of Nuuk, we will pass a multitude of colorful houses lined up along the shores of the Fjord as we sail North towards the iconic mountain, Sermitsiaq.  Your captain will be on the lookout for seals, whales, and other wildlife, and will plot a course to visit any large nearby icebergs en route.

Our adventure takes us around the back-side of Sermitsiaq where an enormous waterfall (frozen solid during the winter) cascades dow n from the mountain top, and tall mountains further in the fjord come into view.  The shape of the mountain and the views of the fjord as we navigate all the way around Sermitsiaq Island change considerably, so make sure you bring spare batteries and plenty of space on your camera.

Although this tour will take place in a closed, heated boat, we encourage you to dress very warmly as you will want to spend as much time out on deck as possible. This is where you will have the best views. There will also be tea and coffee waiting inside if you need to warm up.

What to bring

• Layered clothing. Ideally, you should pack a thermal underwear layer (top and bottom), activity layer (e.g. hiking pants and shirt), insulation layer (e.g. fleece or down jacket), and outer layer of windproof clothing (top and bottom). You may not need all of this on any particular day, but you should have it available. You should always bring a windproof jacket and gloves, regardless of the weather.
• Warm hat, gloves, buff or scarf
• Sunglasses, sunscreen & sun hat (depending on weather)
• Camera and spare batteries
• Drinking water
• Optional: binoculars

Additional Information

• Although this tour takes place on a closed boat, the best views are from the outer decks. Make sure you bring plenty of warm clothes (even in Summer) so you can enjoy from outside.
• The route is dependent on wind and weather conditions. To ensure the best experience, the scheduled highlights may need to be altered.
• You can order a sandwich in the booking process, or you may bring your own snacks/food.
• This tour has a minimum requirement of 2 passengers. If we do not reach this number of people on the day of your tour, we will cancel the tour and refund the paid price.

We recommend that you secure all of your experiences by booking them well in advance of your trip.

We had such a great tour! I do not think you have experienced Nuuk properly if you haven’t been on a boat tour. This tour is perfect if you have a busy schedule or just a short stay in Nuuk. It was only two hours, but we got to see some beautiful nature and the captain was really nice and telling stories about the places we saw. The tour was in an open boat, but we all got survival suits, so we could stay nice and warm. Super service! I would recommend this tour to everyone 🙂

Vi havde en fantastisk tur! Jeg synes ikke man har oplevet Nuuk helt, hvis ikke man har været på en sejltur i fjorden. Denne tur er perfekt, hvis man har et tæt pakket program eller bare besøger byen i kort tid. Vi var på en to timers, eftermiddagstur efter arbejdstid. Selvom turen ikke var lang fik vi set utrolig flot natur og kaptajnen var virkelig flink, fortalte historier om de steder vi så og inviterede på kaffe da vi var kommet halvvejs. Turen var i en åben båd, men vi fik alle overlevelsesdragter, så vi kunne holde varmen. Super service! Jeg vil varmt anbefale denne tur til alle 🙂

I wish to advise that I had a fabulous day in Nuuk thanks to your help with the Tour Bookings . The “Fjord Safari Cruise” was spectacular. The Crew were excellent. On the cruise we witnessed an incredible Sunset, plenty of small to Large Icebergs and either one or possibly two Whales going about their normal business performing for our cameras.

To conclude I had a memorable visit to Greenland, so wish to thank you for your help in organizing the two Tours.
