If you’ve ever tried to faithfully recreate the graphics seen on Star Trek , you know that the distinctive typography requires just the right fonts. I’ve found quite a few useful ones at various websites over the years. Whether it’s a movie title, a computer interface, or an alien script you’re looking to illustrate, there’s probably a font here to get you started. The fonts collected below aren’t supposed to be a complete archive of every font available, but rather a source for the best and most useful versions that are out there.
I’ve used many of these fonts to create various graphics for Star Trek Minutiae over the years, from the You’re the Admiral! maps to that time this site was assimilated by the Borg . I hope you find these useful, too!

Romulan alphabet
The Romulan alphabet developed from an alphabet called Kzhad created in about 1988 by Monte Thrasher ( [email protected] ), a designer and illustrator in Los Angeles, who also designed the Romulan Imperial Insignia. Monte based Kzhad on the shapes of LED displays.
The Romulan or Rihannsu language was created by Diane Duane for use in her novel about the Romulans, a race of alien beings related to the Vulcans. Both Romulans and Vulcans appear in the Star Trek movies and TV shows.

The Romulan Way
by Diane Duane
They are a race of warriors, a noble people to whom honor is all. They are cousin to the Vulcan, ally to the Klingon, and Starfleet's most feared and cunning adversary. They are the Romulans, and for eight years, Federation Agent Terise LoBrutto has hidden in their midst.
Now the presence of a captured Starfleet officer forces her to make a fateful choice between exposure and the chance to escape: maintain her cover -- or save the life of Dr. Leonard McCoy?
Here, in a startlingly different adventure, is the truth behind one of the most fascinating alien races ever created in "Star Trek" -- the Romulans.

NBC aired the first voyages of the starship USS Enterprise on September 8, 1966. Its mission was ‘to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before’. Who could forget the adventures of Commander Spock and Captain James T. Kirk? Certainly, they have made their mark not only in 60s pop culture, but also in modern sci-fi circles.
About the Enterprise
The Star Trek exploration has gone beyond the original TV series. The adventures continued in the 22-episode Star Trek: The Animated Series. Its return to being a television series was marked by three sequels: Star Trek, The Next Generation (1987), Deep Space Nine (1993), and Voyager (1995-2001). The prequel Enterprise (2001) was made set in the early days of human interstellar travel . Alternate timelines and spin-offs were created in the following years.
Star Trek has become a cult phenomenon since. The franchise has expanded towards media such as games, toys, novels, comics, and video games. Its multiple races, with their own languages and unique cultures, have been welcomed by non-fans and have been put in highest regard by followers of the series.

Vulcans and Romulans: A Primer on Unification
Exploring one of the most crucial schisms in the Star Trek universe.
StarTrek.com
A couple of weeks ago, Jake Black wrote an excellent article about how Spock’s dream of Vulcan and Romulan unification , as shown in The Next Generation episodes “ Unification , Parts I and II,” is incredibly relevant for the divided society we are today. But what, exactly, is unification, and why is it important to the Star Trek universe? I’m going to explore that in this primer on unification between the Romulans and Vulcans .
The Romulans and Vulcans descend from the same ancestor species — specifically, the Romulans are an offshoot of ancient Vulcans. From the Star Trek history we know, it’s unclear when the split between the two occurred, but it was likely during Vulcan’s war-torn period of history. Before they established logic as the foundation for their culture and history, Vulcans were similar to humans — emotional and warlike. They thrived on colonialism and conquest, establishing a large swath of colonies across space. Eventually, their empire fell and their society devolved into chaos.
Few records survive from this unstable time, so it’s unclear how the Romulan species was born, but they likely were established during this period. It’s possible that a faction of warlike Vulcans rejected the idea of peace and left to found their own civilization. It’s also possible that the Romulans are one of Vulcan’s outlying colonies that were abandoned by the homeworld and forgotten in the chaos. Either way, for centuries Vulcans were aware of the Romulans as an alien race, but had no idea that the two species shared an ancestral history.
In The Original Series episode “Balance of Terror,” the Enterprise encounters an unknown vessel (presumed to be Romulan) destroying Federation outposts along the Romulan neutral zone. Humans and Romulans had fought a vicious war in the past, but it was before viewscreens were common on ships and there were no captives taken during the conflict. As a result, no one had seen a Romulan in generations, and it was unclear what they looked like. Spock expressed real surprise that the species looked so similar to Vulcans and posited that the two had split during a violent period of Vulcan history, and that Romulans retained that warlike culture, while Vulcans had turned to logic.
Whenever the schism between the two species happened, it was long enough ago such that significant genetic differences have since evolved between Vulcans and Romulans. So while they have the same ancestors, the differences between them by the 24th Century, when The Next Generation is set, are deeper than just culture.
The pro-unification underground goes much further back in history than The Next Generation episode of the same name, where it was introduced. In Star Trek: Enterprise ’s “Kir’Shara,” which aired after TNG but chronologically took place before The Original Series , a secret Romulan agent posing as a Vulcan mentions the unification movement to a Vulcan collaborator (no Starfleet officers were present at this exchange, hence why their shared past remained a mystery). While its origins are unclear (and we don’t know whether Romulan culture retained the memory of their genetic history), the movement was apparently thriving long before it was first depicted on screen.
In “Unification, Parts I and II,” which brought Spock to The Next Generation , the revered ambassador is spotted on Romulus, and the Federation fears that he defected. The costs of his betrayal would be incalculable, so they send Captain Picard on a mission to uncover what’s happened. After a visit to Sarek, Spock’s ailing father, Picard and Data head to Romulus aboard a cloaked Klingon Bird of Prey .
They discover that Spock has not defected; instead, he’s been working with an underground movement to support the reunification of Romulans and Vulcans. Many members of the group had been declared enemies of the Romulan state because of their adherence to Vulcan philosophy; Spock’s goal was to both help them and also evaluate the greater potential of reunification, though, he admits the possibility may be unlikely.
Over the course of the episode, Spock is betrayed by his closest Romulan ally, Senator Pardek, and he, Picard, and Data are captured by the Romulan government. It turns out that the Romulans are interested in reunification, but one at gunpoint — they want to invade Vulcan and conquer it. (As an aside, the idea of the Romulans being able to successfully invade one of the founding worlds of the Federation with three ships and 2,000 troops is laughably arrogant.)
Spock, Picard, and Data manage to escape, but the ambassador chooses to remain on Romulus. He recognizes that unification won’t happen via political channels, but instead through the will of the Romulan people, and he wants to help shepherd it. He stays on Romulus for at least a few years, as the sixth-season episode “Face of the Enemy” once again confronts unification.
While Spock himself isn’t in this episode, his fingerprints are all over it. Counselor Troi is kidnapped by Romulans and altered to look like one of them. She pretends to be a member of the feared Tal Shiar, the Romulan secret police, and her job is to successfully transport high-ranking members of the Romulan government to the Federation as defectors. Spock and his associates are hoping to open a new path for Romulan dissidents to leave the oppressive Star Empire.
What we know about unification after this point is negligible. In the Kelvin universe, at least, Spock continued working with the Romulans in some capacity, as he was involved in efforts to prevent their sun from going supernova. In the time of Star Trek: Picard , the Romulans are scattered, without a home world. It’s unclear whether the movement continued when so many of their brethren were lost, but unification, and the desire to connect with one another, is an important part of Star Trek history that shouldn’t be forgotten.

Who is doctor vellek tng romulan in star trek: discovery explained.
Star Trek: Discovery's Doctor Vellek is a 24th-century Romulan connected to a surprising revelation from a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode.
Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 1 - "Red Directive"
- Dr. Vellek's discovery of Progenitors' technology kicks off a galactic treasure hunt in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.
- The Romulan scientist kept the location secure with a paper diary hidden in a puzzle box on his 24th-century ship.
- The Progenitors' technology holds the power to create and destroy, potentially changing the galaxy forever.
In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive", the USS Discovery's mission takes Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) to an 800-year-old Romulan starship containing the belongings and the remains of a long-dead Romulan scientist named Doctor Vellek (Michael Copeman). Vellek has been entombed in his ship since the 24th century, when Star Trek: The Next Generation takes place. Dr. Vellek's notes contain key information on the galaxy's greatest treasure: a mysterious, ancient, and very powerful artifact that the United Federation of Planets' mysterious Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) prioritizes recovering before it falls into the hands of the villainous Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis).
In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase", Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) follows in the footsteps of his recently-deceased archeology mentor, Professor Galen (Norman Lloyd), by picking up a trail that Galen had long been pursuing. Picard forms a tenuous alliance with Klingons and Cardassians pursuing the same mysterious goal , discovering clues that lead to the uninhabited planet Vilmor II. Upon arrival, however, Picard, Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn), and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), along with Klingon and Cardassian representatives, beam down to find a crew of Romulans that have beaten them there. Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere reveals more about one of those Romulans, Dr. Vellek.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide
Who was doctor vellek in star trek: tng’s “the chase”, star trek: discovery reveals the romulan doctor vellek's tng connection..
Doctor Vellek is a Romulan scientist with the crew that has already arrived at Vilmor II in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Chase" , establishing how Discovery season 5 connects to TNG . Instead of joining in the collaborative effort with the Federation as the Klingons and Cardassians did, the Romulans simply monitored communications as the USS Enterprise traveled from site to site, unveiling clues at each destination that led to the next. Everyone present is equally privy to the information revealed by a hologram of an Ancient Humanoid (Salome Jens) that their race seeded life throughout the galaxy, so all humanoid species share a common ancestor, which Star Trek: Discovery has dubbed the Progenitors.
Dr. Kovich already knows what's been "classified for centuries" when telling Captain Burnham about Vellek's own discovery of the Progenitors' technology.
The Klingons and Cardassians drop the spirit of cooperation that led them to this point, balking at the idea that they're related in any way. But the Romulans, who essentially copied the Federation's homework to arrive at Vilmor II, contact Captain Picard with hope of an alliance between the Romulans and the Federation. This implies Vellek had been in contact with the Federation while leading the search for the Progenitors' technology in the 24th century , because in Discovery 's 32nd century , Dr. Kovich already knows what's been "classified for centuries" when telling Captain Burnham about Vellek's own discovery of the Progenitors' technology.
Why The Progenitors Technology Is Star Trek: Discovery’s Greatest Treasure
"a few thousand years ago, we'd have called them gods.".
The Progenitors' technology is Star Trek: Discovery 's greatest treasure because it holds the answers to scientific and philosophical questions about the nature of life as we know it, and also has the power to create life essentially from scratch. The site of Progenitor technology could explain the ancient humanoids' motives beyond what was revealed in Star Trek: The Next Generation , fundamentally altering societies at their very core. With that kind of information and the power of creation, the user of Progenitor technology could become the most powerful force in the galaxy , especially if the power to create also holds within it the power to destroy.
The Romulan in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1 , "Red Directive", Dr. Vellek, understood the importance of keeping information about the Progenitors and their technology as secure as possible. Vellek attempted to keep the location of Progenitor technology out of the wrong hands by keeping a paper diary, which can't be hacked, and hiding that book within a Romulan puzzle box, itself within a cloaked vault aboard his 24th-century Romulan ship. Even then, Dr. Vellek's diary isn't the treasure itself, but a clue that kicks off Star Trek: Discovery 's galactic treasure hunt, destined to change the galaxy irrevocably.

In 2369 , Vellek was assigned to a Romulan vessel that observed, under cloak , the USS Enterprise -D investigating a genetic puzzle left behind by the ancient Progenitors . He was part of the landing party on Vilmor II that attempted to collect the final piece of the puzzle, and witnessed a recorded message from a Progenitor explaining their role in the evolution of all humanoid species in the galaxy . ( TNG : " The Chase ")
Vellek went on to join five other scientists in studying the Progenitors. The teame included Jinall Bix of the Trill, Terran Dr. Carmen Cho , Hitoroshi Kreel of Denobula , and Marina Derex of Betazed . Eventually, they discovered the technology the progenitors used to create life . After one of their group died attempting to activate it, the remaining five decided to keep its location secret, lest it fall into the wrong hands. They each took a piece of a map containing the technology's whereabouts, so that they could guide others to it when the time was right. Vellek hid his piece in the Promellian necropolis on Lyrek . ( DIS : " Jinaal ", " Whistlespeak ")
When his vessel sustained critical damage circa 2391 , Vellek feared that his knowledge of the Progenitors would be lost. He placed his journal with his findings inside a tan zhekran secured in a vault , and transmitted a distress call with a clue to the his piece of the map, though the message was partially garbled and could not be followed up on at the time. He ultimately perished in his quarters .
In 3191 , Vellek's science ship was rediscovered, and the USS Discovery was dispatched on a Red Directive mission to retrieve the Progenitor data. However, they found that Vellek's journal had already been taken by couriers Moll and L'ak . ( DIS : " Red Directive ")
Vellek's name later appeared crossed out on a list that Dr. Kovich gave to Burnham after discovering the names of the scientists that had hidden the Progenitors' technology. ( DIS : " Whistlespeak ")
