Why choose intrepid.

A camera

Real, authentic experiences

We love the highlights, but for us the real magic is found off the tourist trails. Our trips combine iconic sites with hidden gems that you’ll only discover with Intrepid. We’re talking mornings exploring the Taj Mahal, followed by a Mughlai cooking class with a passionate home cook.

A local Intrepid leader

Local expertise

Whether you’re perusing markets, hunting down the best street food bites or learning how to cook centuries-old family recipes at a homestay, there’s no better way to get the inside scoop on a destination – and its culinary traditions – than with an expert local leader by your side.

A small group of travellers

Small groups

Big coaches and flag-toting tour guides don’t cut it for us. With a maximum group size of 12, our groups blend in with the locals and have plenty of opportunities to interact with chefs, street food vendors and group leaders. It also means you can really connect with your fellow foodies.

Must-try dishes around the world

A plate of traditional Peruvian ceviche

Peru – ceviche

Ceviche is the unofficial national dish of Peru. It's made by marinating cubes of raw fish and seafood in lime juice, onions, salt and aji amarillo chilli peppers, and is served cold with sweet potato chunks, plantain chips and corn on the cob.

Paella simmering in a pan

Spain – paella

This saffron-flavored rice dish originated in Valencia hundreds of years ago when hungry servants would combine rice with leftovers from Moorish kings' lavish banquets. The dish varies across the regions, but the mixed version with chorizo, mussels and prawns is the most popular internationally.

A Kochi-style Thali in India

India – thali

Struggling to choose just one curry? Fear not. A thali comprises several eye-popping dishes served on a large plate. The dishes typically include grains, lentils, vegetables or meat curries, chutney, raita, pickles and pappadum – creating the perfect balance of sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy flavors.

A glass of wine with Balkan cheese and a cracker balanced on top

Balkans – cured meats and cheeses

When traveling through the Balkans, treat your tastebuds to delicious charcuterie boards loaded with traditionally preserved meats, cheeses, vegetables and bread. Some of the most popular Balkan meats to try include cevapi (homemade grilled sausage), njeguši (dry-cured ham) and pljeskavica (Balkan burger).

A street vendor selling falafel in Bethlehem, Isreal

Israel & Palestinian Territories – falafel

Considered to be Israel’s national dish, these balls of deliciousness (made with ground chickpeas, herbs and spices) are a must-try plant-based dish. They’re usually served on a platter or in a warm pita pocket filled with pickled vegetables, crunchy cabbage salad and generous lashings of creamy tahini sauce.

A colorful bowl of khao soi in Chiang Mai

Thailand – khao soi

There’s a whole world of Thai noodle dishes to discover beyond the obvious (and delicious!) pad thai. Khao soi is a chicken and coconut noodle soup from northern Thailand. It’s packed with vibrant aromatics and is served with crispy fried noodles, shallots and fresh lime wedges on top.

Food tour highlights

Travellers enjoying fried chicken in South Korea

Asia’s answer to Seoul food

Hit South Korea to wash down crunchy Korean Fried Chicken (aka KFC) with a glass of soju, share a traditional plant-based meal with Buddhist monks at your monastery stay, and get the inside sip on Busan’s bustling craft beer scene at a brewery.

Travellers enjoy tarts in Portugal

Pilgrimage through the Portuguese plate

Head to Iberia to cook up a Galician feast using Vigo’s finest seafood, sip world-class wines in the spectacular Douro Valley wine region, sip Ginjinha while snacking on petiscos, and discover Portugal’s best-kept foodie secret – the Alentejo countryside.

A traditional dinner in Kyoto, Japan

Temples to tempura, shrines to sashimi

Journey to Japan to discover the country's most delicious foodie hotspots. Feel like a real Iron Chef during an ‘Art of Sushi’ masterclass, experience the seasonal flavors of obanzai ryori at a cooking class, and enjoy the simple and delicious flavors of monastic cuisine in Koya-san.

A tagine in the M'goun Valley, Morocco

Master Morocco’s medina flavors

Make your way to Morocco and enjoy a home-cooked dinner with a family in Chefchaouen, share a Berber meal at a desert camp in the Sahara, watch ras el hanout being freshly ground in a Marrakech spice souk, and eat mechoui (slow-roasted lamb) cooked in an earth oven.

A street vendor selling tacos

Enjoy mouthwatering Mexican food

Get a true taste of Mexico in some of the country’s most famous culinary regions. Enjoy a tasty taco feast in Mexico City, visit a traditional mezcaleria to learn about this famous Oaxacan tipple, feast on fresh seafood at a cooking class in Huatulco and maybe sample the surprisingly delicious delicacy of chapulines (grasshoppers).

A plate of Vietnamese spring rolls

Savor vibrant Vietnamese flavors

Chop, slice and slurp your way through Vietnam on a culinary quest from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Cook up regional dishes like cao lau noodles in Hoi An, tour Hue on a motorbike followed by a plant-based lunch at a pagoda, and feast on southern Vietnamese specialties at a Mekong Delta homestay.

Tour reviews

Food tour faqs, what food can i expect.

Expect to eat the local way. We don't call these trips ‘food adventures’ for nothing. Forget Michelin stars and 20-course degustations – our local leaders will help you get behind the scenes of local food culture, track down the freshest street food, discover the most authentic local restaurants and reveal the traditions and techniques that make these destinations so deliciously mouth-watering. From lining up with locals for fresh tortillas in a Mexican market to hopping between Logrono’s thriving tapas bars, they’ll show you local food from the perspective of those who eat it every day.

How does a Food Adventure differ to a regular Intrepid trip?

All of our food trips have been designed with one thing in mind – experiencing the best local food on the planet. But we all know that there’s much more to food than just eating it – so whether it’s browsing markets for fresh produce, sizzling up a storm in a cooking class or meeting a local street-food legend, we’ve stuffed your plate to the brim. And once you’ve devoured all the local food you can handle, we’ve made sure our Food Adventures are rolled up into a burrito with the lot so you won’t miss out on the iconic sights and authentic cultural experiences that are found on all our Intrepid trips.

Is there any freedom & flexibility in the itineraries?

Like all Intrepid itineraries, we’ve made sure our food trips provide free time between activities, allowing you to digest a destination either with your group or on your own. You might spend the morning exploring a buzzing local market with your guide and cooking a delicious local dish with your group before heading off on your own to wander the marbled halls of a museum or cycling through ancient alleys.

We’ve also left plenty of mealtimes free of organized activities, which gives you the flexibility to ‘get your gourmet on’ at a fine dining restaurant or simply seek out your own ‘real food’ adventure. Needless to say, your leader will be there every step of the way with suggestions and recommendations.

What transport is used?

Sometimes, the best way to eat like a local is to travel like one too. That could mean jumping on a boat to discover the flavors of the Mekong Delta, riding the Tokyo subway to a sake bar or rattling along in a rickshaw in pursuit of Agra’s finest chaats. We love to use local transport because it gives us a chance to experience everyday local life from a new perspective.

What is the accommodation like?

Whether you’re spending the night in an ancient fortress or in the home of a local family, most of our trips include a memorable overnight stay that is designed to make your trip extra memorable. When we do choose to use hotels, all of our accommodation options are in our Original style, which means a mix of 2-3 star establishments that are safe, clean and comfortable.

How do Intrepid's Food Adventures benefit local communities?

We help support local economies by purchasing snacks and meals from street-side vendors, dining in local restaurants, eating seasonal produce from the destination, and using local guides throughout our itineraries. Many of our trips incorporate visits to community projects, and we choose locally-owned accommodation wherever possible. We are committed to a style of travel that is culturally, environmentally and socially responsible.

Why does every Food Adventure include a plant-based meal?

Plant-based foods generally have a much lower carbon footprint than animal-based foods, and incorporating more plant-based eating into our diet is a major opportunity to mitigate and adapt to climate change. As Intrepid continues to innovate in ways that promote and support sustainability, including a delicious meal that showcases local fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds is just one way that we are investing in the health of our planet.

What about vegan travelers?

We do our best to accommodate dietary requirements (including vegan diets) on all of our trips, and all our Real Food Adventures will include at least one plant-based meal. If you want a more tailored experience, that's where our Tailor-Made team can step in. We can use our 30 years of experience and regional specialists to help you create your perfect vegan food adventure.

While the pandemic compelled many Americans to stay closer to home over the last few years, it also prompted pent-up demand to see the world again. By some estimates , nearly two-thirds of Americans planned to travel in 2022, and in November, the TSA screened the most passengers since the start of the pandemic.

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to start planning (or at least dreaming about) new adventures . We asked travel and hospitality experts what to expect next year. From oyster trails to sustainable menus and immersive culinary experiences like chef-led crabbing expeditions, here are the biggest travel trends of 2023.

Food Trails

“In North Carolina, we see a trend with destinations creating food trails, which direct travelers to authentic dining experiences that reflect local and regional flavors and culture. Recent examples include the N.C. Oyster Trail, a sustainability-focused initiative that builds on the growth in aquaculture and highlights the collaboration between innovative growers and talented chefs.” — Margo Metzger, public relations director of Visit North Carolina

“As home of the 30-location O.C. Craft Beverage Trail, we are noticing an uptick in people interested in craft beverages. Our local craft beverage makers are serving a variety of beers, wines, spirits, and ciders; in venues ranging from repurposed warehouses to sprawling farms and everything in between. We can tell from check-ins along our craft beverage trail that people are traveling from out of state and making a day trip out of it.” — Amanda Dana, director of Orange County Tourism and Film

“Throughout 2022 we have seen a rise in TV tourism, with fans flocking to our shores to experience first-hand the place where their favorite shows are being filmed including HBO’s The Gilded Age and Disney’s Hocus Pocus . Travelers can have one-of-a-kind experiences that transport them back in time.” — Evan Smith, president and CEO, Discover Newport

Traveling by Train

“Culinary tourism by train is on the rise, with immersive dining experiences that allow travelers to taste their way through a destination. Experiences range from individual rail excursions, such as nostalgic four-star dinner trains in the United States and a full-day food and wine immersion in Excellence Class aboard Switzerland's Glacier Express, to week-long cuisine and culture European rail vacations that marry authentic gastronomic experiences like cooking classes, market visits, and tastings at local wine estates with regional and high-speed rail journeys that connect each cultural capital.” — Todd Powell, co-founder and president, Vacations By Rail

Immersive Food Experiences

“Our Hilton 2023 Trends Report revealed that nearly half of the travelers surveyed will be looking for more immersive and authentic cultural experiences next year – and one of the best ways to discover a new culture is by tasting their traditional fare or experiencing their drinking rituals. At Conrad Punta de Mita , for example, guests can visit an on-site agave tasting studio, which takes participants on a journey to really understand the region through the tastes and flavors of tequila and mezcal.” — Adam Crocini, SVP and global head, Food & Beverage Brands, Hilton

“People are taking advantage of the flourishing, native culinary options and agricultural products of a destination, whether sampling local fresh seafood or produce from a Massachusetts farm, restaurant, or culinary walking tour; uncovering the deeply rooted historic ties and traditions of in-state produced items such as craft beer and native cranberries; or curating trips around local harvests at one of over 80 Massachusetts orchard farms.” — Keiko Matsudo Orrall, executive director for the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

“We’ll see more deeply immersive experiences. I anticipate a number of F&B outlets to include heightened offerings, including cocktail classes at world class bars and cooking classes with world class chefs.” — Gabriel Sanchez, General Manager of Midnight Rambler in Dallas

"I think we will see more chef-led and assisted tours of farms, boats or facilities in which travelers will see the entire life cycle of their food. For example, we would go crabbing in the morning, then go see the dairy farm where we source our butter, and go to the next farm to learn about the mushrooms that finish the dish. By spending an entire day with the chef, guests learn more about the components of each meal and the talented people that went into producing it. It gives a much deeper understanding of a region.” — Gregory James, executive chef of STARS restaurant at Inn at Perry Cabin in Maryland

“Today’s traveler is open to trying new flavors, and this is applicable to the Mexican spirits as well. Mexico has a huge variation and types of agave plants that translate in different types of distills — Sotol, Raicilla and Bacanora are earning their spots in great bars and menus. We are introducing a new menu that will allow our guests to discover other parts of Mexico, enjoying a great drink with these amazing distills.”  — Sergio de Landa, head mixologist at One&Only Palmilla in Los Cabos

“I’ve seen culinary collaborations take off in 2022, from cultural fusions and cannabis-infused menus to catch-and-cook encounters and intimate hangouts with food served in unorthodox venues.” — Amanda Cusey, reigning Louisiana Seafood Queen

“We’ve noticed that the visitors to our community really want an immersive experience. Obviously, immersion in our cuisine, but also immersion in our culture, our people, and our history.”. — Michael Dalmau, owner, Cinclare and Thibodaux in Louisiana

Zero-Kilometer Food

"Sustainability will continue to be at the forefront of food and beverage in 2023, with not only more local and seasonal products sourced by the chefs, but also a growing trend of hotels and restaurants creating their own vegetable gardens and orchards to provide fresh organic food for their guests. Globally at Relais & Châteaux, among our 580 members, we have at the moment 300 kitchen gardens, 100 properties keep bees, and 55 are wine producers.” — Laurent Gardinier, president of Relais & Châteaux and co-owner of Domaine Les Crayères and Le Taillevent in France

“ Many of our chefs and mixologists have focused their creative time during the pandemic on establishing zero-kilometer sourcing – going beyond the basic edible flowers and herbs to growing seasonal vegetables and harvesting honey on property. For example, our executive chef at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, Yoric Tièche, with the generosity of a local guest, established a cliffside terraced garden which now provides the lion’s share of his vegetables for our one-star Michelin restaurant, Le Cap. We’ve begun hosting private chef's dinners in what has now become one of the most epic destination dining settings in the world.”  — Kimberly Grant, global head of restaurants and bars, Four Seasons

“The latest travel trend I expect to see more of in 2023 is vegetable-focused sustainable farm dinners. This is not just food from the farm served in a restaurant, but interactive farms where you can learn about how and what is growing, then create a menu based on the ingredients in that season.” — Ashley Abodeely, executive chef of NoMad London

“Guests are increasingly looking to have a connection to the land where produce is sourced, and the demand to visit farms or have an 'agrication' experience has grown exponentially.” — Michael Young, resort manager at Timbers Kauai at Hokuala in Hawaii

“The restaurants with zero-kilometer products, meaning ingredients obtained in the locality where the restaurants and environment cohabitate, will undoubtedly be the places preferred by travelers.” — Sergio Pérez Domínguez, executive chef at Mango Cocina de Origin at Casa Salles in Mexico

Zero-Proof Cocktails

“Our chefs and mixologists are fully embracing the evolving lifestyle preferences of our guests. At many Four Seasons restaurants and bars, we have retreated from separate ‘upon request’ menus and are now integrating these dishes or beverages straight into our main menus, truly showcasing these items with an unsurpassed level of creativity and innovation.” — Kimberly Grant, global head of restaurants and bars, Four Seasons

“The no-ABV trend continues to grow and is evolving past cocktails and onto our wine list with requests for by-the-glass options. We sourced a great zero-proof champagne, French Bloom, that’s quite popular at both Bemelmans and Dowling’s.” – Tony Mosca, Director of Food & Beverage at The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel in New York

“With many consumers reevaluating their relationship with alcohol, Visit Salt Lake is experiencing a pronounced expansion of non-alcoholic beverage offerings by expert mixologists in existing bars. This has given rise to mocktail-specific bars such as the Maven District’s Curiosity , a zero-proof bottle shop and bar.” — Kaitlin Eskelson, president and CEO, Visit Salt Lake, Utah

“Coffee and tea are leveling up and are not afterthoughts in many restaurants. Beverage programs expand beyond spirituous beverages and curate just as compelling NA experiences.” — Avishar Barua, chef and owner of Joya’s Café in Ohio

“Expect 2023 to see even more accelerated enthusiasm for low-ABV and alcohol-free beverages, not only in lodging but in commercial F&B. It’s its own category on menus, and hotel and resort bars are absolutely building the program out further..” — Brian Contreras, director of culinary operations, Miraval Resorts & Spas

 Upgraded Frozen Cocktails

“We’re seeing frozen drinks make a comeback – this time without alcohol and focusing on fresher ingredients and less high concentrate mixtures.” — Gilbert Bolivar, Director of Food & Beverage at Innisbrook Resort in Florida

Spotlight on Regional Cuisine

“Guests are getting more and more interested in discovering dishes that are unique to a region's ingredients and preparation. For example, travelers will become increasingly more culturally aware of the differences in gastronomy from Oaxaca compared to the rest of Mexican cuisine, which is why the Mercados de Mexico tasting menu concept at our restaurant Mezcal is so popular with our guests." — Daniel Diaz, head of food & beverage, Montage Los Cabos in Mexico

"I believe 2023 will see regionality return. Being able to travel again, we’re no longer dependent on our food and drink traveling for us. Restaurants and bars across the county will be able to focus on the cuisine and style that makes them singularly amazing and lean into traditions and terroir driven inspiration." — Robin Wolf, co-owner of Highwater SLO in San Luis Obispo

Zero-Waste Dining

“Getting creative and cross-utilizing foods is pertinent to mitigate food waste across the world – and it’s part of our culinary DNA. Our chefs will regularly experiment with banana peels to make plant-based bacon, convert potato peels into chips and garnishes, or even repurpose off cuts and trimmings to make mousses and rillettes, as well as using techniques like pickling, canning, and fermenting to extend product shelf life." — Ana Esteves, vice president of hotel operations, Lindblad Expeditions

“New for 2023, our guests will learn the importance of seasonal, local, zero-waste cooking. For example, we’ll source local mahi-mahi according to St. Barts fishing regulations, using every piece of the fish, including the roe to make our signature tarama; vegetable peels are used to make unique sauces and dressings, and anything that is not edible is composted leaving no waste behind. — Vincent Gomis, the head chef, AMIS at Le Barthelemy Hotel & Spa

Dramatic Dining

“If the last two to three years have shown us anything, it’s that people want to feel like they make the most of their time out and about. They want to be entertained. They want to be transported. Whether that’s from story-driven cocktail menus, inventive tableside service, or re-invented mash-ups or flavor combinations, we need to shift from traditional menu items and service to capture the theatrics and experience of dining out. A Japanese-Italian ramen carbonara in Philly? Sure! Koji-cured peppers in Milwaukee? Why not?” — Scott Gingrich, Kimpton SVP of Restaurant and Bars

"Diners want more than a good meal; they want to experience something memorable and authentic." — Patrick Allard, food and beverage director for Grand Adirondack Hotel in New York

“Social distancing, though now behind us, has created an allure for immersive experiences, and tableside service is one of those. Venues will seek opportunities to integrate experiential moments tableside, whether with tartar or martinis or beyond.” — Jonathan Knudsen, principal, Concrete Hospitality Group

All-Inclusive Resorts with Really Good Food

"I foresee an uptick in all-inclusive resorts going above and beyond with their culinary offerings. Now more than ever, travelers are looking for value in their bookings. When the destination can not only offer world-class service and activities, but also a robust culinary program, the perception of value is heightened, and the overall experience is elevated.”  — Brandon Cunningham, chef at the green-o in Montana

Technology-Enhanced Dining

“More and more, we’re finding ways to incorporate technology within our everyday experiences. At BACÁN, we have a robot server named Rosie. I think we’ll be seeing even more tech enhancements going into 2023. Think augmented reality garnishes that bring cocktails to life via a mobile app or smart coaster. The ‘garnishes’ will showcase the stories behind the cocktails and offer Instagram-worthy moments for guests.” — Guillaume Robin, executive chef at Lake Nona Wave Hotel in Florida

More Food Tours

“Culinary tourism is on the rise around the world, and Montréal is certainly no exception. The city is home to a thousand and one possibilities for food tours, with flavors that transform and evolve with the changing seasons." — Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal

“More and more, travelers are prioritizing culinary experiences during their getaways, with vacationers seeking to immerse themselves in a destination by sampling local, authentic fare unique to that area. Travelers can truly uncover a country’s culture and history through its food on Explore Worldwide’s new Food Adventures tours by tasting the delicious produce, visiting markets, sharing meals with locals, and even having a go at preparing dishes themselves.” — Michael Edwards, managing director, Explore Worldwide

"Food is an integral part of culture, and our clients are demanding this aspect of travel more now than ever before, I only see this demand growing into 2023 as travelers shift their preferences for tours of the Louvre to foodie tours in Montmartre.” — Kaleigh Kirkpatrick, founder of luxury travel agency The Shameless Tourist

Nostalgic Flavors

“Retro flavors are making a comeback; think comfort foods like creamy rice pudding and classic sticky date sponge. Our philosophy is that slow food is good food, and we are seeing that more and more with guests, too!” — David McCann, executive chef at Dromoland Castle in Ireland

Some of the best food tours allow travelers to get closer to the destination they are visiting.

No tour can give you a sense of place quite so quickly or evocatively as a food tour. From the richly flavored spice blends of North Africa and the Middle East to the Cajun cuisine of the southern United States, the bush tucker of Aboriginal Australia, or the curries of the Indian subcontinent, food is one of the best ways to explore a new destination and its culture.

Instantly connecting you not only to the destination but to the people resident in the city or region, food tours provide a means of interaction with locals that goes above and beyond any language difficulties.

A way of discovering new favorites and expanding your comfort zone with a whole host of new sights, tastes, and smells, food tours also open up unique perspectives into a destination, since local produce plays such an important role in the history and culture of a region. What are the monuments of Italy without a bowlful of freshly prepared pasta, or the landscapes of South America without its native fayre ?

What a terrific experience! Emilio was an outstanding guide and chef who helped us explore the entire Salento region- a different region each day! We then were treated to his culinary deilights each evening on the wonderful olive farm. He was extremely accommodating and very flexible throughout the stay. Matera was also a very enjoyable and interesting city, and Cosimo was the most knowledgeable guide! Omar did a wonderful job of organization and was very easy to contact and extremely helpful. What a wonderful trip. I would highly recommend this company!

Private Sicily Food & Wine Lovers Tour Tour

Private Sicily Food & Wine Lovers Tour

Massimo of Sicily Activities was wonderful to work with. He always answered right away, and took care of EVERYTHING throughout the trip--even things that weren't strictly part of the tour. We were a private group of 15. PALERMO: The hotel was wonderful and Fabrizio was a great guide for the food tour. Luca was a great driver to Monreale and Cefalu'. Larisa was a good guide for the Monreale cathedral and Lisabeta in Cefalu' was fantastic--and the restaurant was, too. Claudio, our driver to Agrigento and Siracusa was excellent. The guide at Valley of the Temples was good. An amazing place. SIRACUSA: The hotel was lovely and in a great location. Both guides in Ortigia were great--Valerio for the walking tour and Paolo for the foodie dinner--what a fun man. Paolo, the driver to Noto, Villa Romana del Casale and Taormina was fantastic. Saro was an excellent guide in Noto and Mt Etna. Lunches in both Noto and Piazza Amerina were delicious. Patrizia, the guide for Villa Romana, was wonderful, especially when we needed an ambulance for one of the women to go to the hospital. And dear Massimo even arranged a taxi for me from the hospital back to Siracusa (about an hour and half away). The driver was the nicest man! TAORMINA: Another very nice hotel. Our guide for the walking tour was really good. She was patient as we were a little late getting ready to start the tour, but she still took us to the Greek Theatre in the rain and wind. The tour to Mt Etna was fabulous--both the tasting and the lunch. Massimo even arranged a pizza-making class when weather prevented us from going on our scheduled boat ride. In summary, there was nothing Massimo could have done better. And this is at a time when all the tour directors were overwhelmed with bookings. He was a standout!

1 Week of Gourmet and history: Prague, Vienna and Budapest Tour

  • Christmas & New Year

1 Week of Gourmet and history: Prague, Vienna and Budapest

Our adventure began in Prague, where the knowledgeable and passionate guide Jane led us through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, sharing fascinating stories of the city's medieval past. The architectural wonders of Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge came to life as we absorbed the historical significance of each site. The gourmet aspect of our journey commenced with a delightful introduction to traditional Czech cuisine, offering flavors that tantalized our taste buds and left us craving for more. Continuing to Vienna, our driver skillfully navigated the picturesque landscapes, ensuring a comfortable and scenic journey. The guide Marianna in Vienna seamlessly wove together the city's imperial history with visits to Schönbrunn Palace and St. Stephen's Cathedral. A highlight was the gourmet exploration of Viennese coffeehouses and the culinary masterpiece that is Sachertorte. The blend of history and gastronomy created a harmonious experience, allowing us to savor the essence of this elegant city. As we crossed into Budapest, the third leg of our journey, our guide John provided a captivating narrative of the city's complex history. Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion offered panoramic views that left us in awe. The Hungarian cuisine was a revelation, and our culinary adventures included traditional goulash, chimney cake, and an array of mouthwatering dishes that showcased the country's culinary prowess. Throughout the tour, the professionalism of our guides and drivers was exceptional. Their expertise, passion for their cities, and friendly demeanor enhanced our overall experience. They not only navigated the intricacies of each destination effortlessly but also shared valuable insights, creating a deeper connection with the places we visited.

Charming Sicily Food & Wine Small Group Tour - 8 days Tour

Charming Sicily Food & Wine Small Group Tour - 8 days

Overall our tour was wonderful. We had a great time. Denise, especially was a very good guide, very knowledgable and personable. The cooking class and our Palermo Street Food tour was, probably my favorites. A few areas that could have been improved upon: - A little more communication prior to the tour would have been reassuring. In this day of fraud it is a little unnerving to send all that money into the internet and not get much of a response. - The final communication, our itinerary, was a definite problem. We were told by Tour Radar that we would receive it 10-14 days before we left. The tour operator (ClickTours/Mossimo) told us we would receive it 8 days before we left. I finally called Tour Radar 6 days before we left

The tour was a wonderful discovery of slovenian food and wine. Fantastic cooking classes and very good arrangements for our accommodations in Brda and transfers from the Ljubljana airport. Very welcoming assistant during the whole tour. It was a unique opportunity to taste many different local biological products and wines from Karst and Goriska Brda regions always in touch with nature and locals.. Recommended

What people love about Food & Culinary Tours in Europe

I can’t say enough good things about our experience in Sicily thanks to Mossimo and his team. Excellent, informative tour guides…Denise, Carlos, Antonio and Sem. The cooking class may have been the highlight, but all of the activities were fun and the pace of the tour, planned activities/free time mix was perfect. Will definitely recommend!
This was an outstanding experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend it. With Emilio and Clara and their family in Salento, I got to experience authentic Italian life as well as sightseeing some incredible towns. I felt like I was staying with good friends who had so much knowledge and desire to showcase the typical foods from the region. Emilio runs a restaurant at the olive oil farm and each meal was delicious. Understanding the production of olive oil was fascinating. And they give flexibility on the time you wish to spend at each place. Each day was different and they change the schedule to suit the weather so you get the best out of the places you visit. My time in Matera was just as outstanding. Mr Cosimo, my guide was very kind and shared so much history of the town with me. He looked after me like a good friend. It was amazing. He gave me great suggestions about restaurants for my free time. The hotel was stunning and had a Roman bath where I could relax. Omar from Soleto Travel was always very helpful in answering any questions and prompt. I am so happy I found this tour.
Continued.. Besides both Carla and Emilios own knowlege and history of each place they had Profesional guides to take you around to the other places. Nice to be in a private car. Great food like I said before. Emilio really takes care and you can see the passion in every dish he makes. Very well put together tour. Loved my stay at the farmhouse learning about the olive trees. Overall a Wonderful experience during my week in brindisi. Will visit again! Crystal

What Food Is Boston Most Famous For?

First thing’s first, it’s a good idea to know what food Boston is most famous for before you decide which tour is best for you. And because it’s a city, you could argue that pretty much all cuisine shines here, but there are definitely two types of food that are going to stand out in Boston:

🍝 Italian and 🦞 Seafood !

Between the 1850s and early 1900s, a large population of Italians immigrated to Boston via the Port of Boston, and many of them settled in the North End. Now, the North End is famous for charming and historic streets, and … you guessed it – Italian food! If you love Italian cuisine, this is where you should go (or take your tour!).

And of course, seafood is another star of the Boston food scene simply because of its location on the coast. Menus all across the city will feature fresh seafood from coastal towns like Wellfleet, Chatham, Ipswich, Nantucket and more . In particular, if you see Wellfleet or Chatham oysters, Nantucket scallops or Maine lobster on the menu, you’ll definitely want to consider ordering those!

Tips For Your Boston Food Tour!

  • Wear comfy shoes! Sneakers will be ideal. Boston is a pretty casual city anyway, and most tours on this list head over to the North End, where there are historic (meaning, uneven!) cobblestone and brick sidewalks. Sturdy and comfy shoes are a must.
  • Come hungry! I know it seems this goes without saying, but most food tours will equal an entire meal. Be sure to read the description to find out how much food you’ll be eating, and come hungry enough for it!
  • Bring a reusable water bottle if your tour doesn’t provide drinks or bottled water. Some do, but it’s best to check and come prepared.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions on your tour! The guides are local experts, and they love sharing their knowledge on the food scene in Boston. Don’t hesitate to raise your hand and get all your questions answered. I also highly suggest asking where to eat during the rest of your trip because they’ll have awesome off-the-beaten-path recommendations!

Taco Lovers E-Scooter Downtown Foodie Tour by Atomic Scooters Rental & Tours

Taco Lovers E-Scooter Downtown Foodie Tour by Atomic Scooters Rental & Tours

It would be negligent to talk about all the Las Vegas food tours and not mention this tour that’s entirely devoted to one of our favorite foods – tacos! Hop on a scooter and get ready to enjoy tacos as you’ve never had them before on this favorite of Las Vegas tours .

Atomic Scooters will take you on a guided tour that explores Downtown Las Vegas and the Arts District. Your group will visit two taco shops known for their incredible food, where you’ll enjoy 2-4 tacos at each stop. The food has been preselected for you, but there’s also the option to create your own culinary experience. There’s also a stop at a chocolate shop for dessert, just to sweeten the deal.

Tours last a little over two hours and include two complimentary photos of your group. Food must be preordered. This is one of the most economical food tours on our list, but part of the reason that the price is lower is that additional charges for the food may apply. Tours run daily and make multiple stops throughout the downtown area.

An Easy Guide to Choosing the Best Food Tours In Las Vegas

With a culinary scene that never stops, there’s no shortage of food tours to enjoy while you’re in Las Vegas. Of course, they each have something a little different to offer, so here are the main points to consider when choosing the best food tour to satisfy your foodie appetite.

Location, Location, Location

Food tours in Las Vegas are generally divided into two categories – on the Las Vegas Strip and off. Food tours on the Strip are great if you’re staying in one of the main hotels and really want to stick to that area. Food tours of the Strip feature all sorts of types of food, from food carts and local eats to fine dining and restaurants by celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Giada de Laurentiis.

Downtown food tours in Las Vegas tend to be more eclectic, which matches the atmosphere of the downtown area and the Arts District. A downtown tour might take you to vintage Vegas spots or hidden gems that mostly only the locals know about. Downtown food tours also give you the opportunity to do a little sightseeing at some of the most well-known spots, like Container Park and the Fremont Street Experience.

The Food

Of course, you want to know that you’re going to love the food before signing up for any food tours in Las Vegas. Many food tour companies are a little secretive about where exactly they’ll take you on the tour. After all, the suspense is part of the fun! Still, you should be able to get a good idea of if the food will be casual and traditional, upscale and eclectic, or anything in between.

If you have any special dietary considerations, make sure that you contact the company directly to ask if any accommodations can be made. Some food tours in Las Vegas do what they can to accommodate special dietary needs, but this isn’t always possible.

Always make sure you’re familiar with the rules of any food tour you attend. Most are open to all age groups, but some do have age restrictions – especially those food tours that involve scooters or Segways.

There may also be extra charges for beverages or add ons. Many food tour companies suggest you bring along extra money to pay for cocktails or extras that you might want during your experience. Often the only beverage that’s included is water, so plan accordingly if you’d like something more.

It’s also a good idea to inquire about free cancellation and what happens if you leave the tour early. You’ll likely find that free cancellation is available given an ample amount of advanced notice, but each tour has its own policies.

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The Red Square

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

GUM Department Store

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

72 Fun & Unusual Things to Do in Moscow

fun things to do in Moscow

  • 0 Pinterest

Sure, Moscow is the Russian political capital and the nation’s most populous city, but describing it as such couldn’t be any further from the truth. More accurately, Moscow is a city of contrasts.

It exudes history — its Kremlin dates back centuries, nodding to royalty and leadership old and now, while the famed Red Square, the poster child of the city, blends striking color with ancient tradition and religion.

On the other hand, it’s a city of modern pop culture and towering skyscrapers; a place where you’ll come across new-age museums, arts centers, manmade parks, and an efficient transportation system that’s one of the most beautiful in Europe.

It’s a city of longstanding culture — the Bolshoi Theater is an international symbol for excellence in classical dance, while Russia’s National Ballet Company remains renowned worldwide — as well as upbeat nightlife, with some of the world’s most celebrated rooftop bars and nightclubs.

While it’s a city filled with opposites, there remains no shortage of things to do in Moscow for all types of travelers — from those who want cultural immersion to those looking for an epic night out, you’ll be spoiled for choice. And if you’re not sure where to start, here’s a list of suggestions!

The Moscow Kremlin

If there’s any particular district begging to be the first place you visit on your trip, it’s the Kremlin.

Built in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible, the UNESCO-listed area has since become the heart of Russia’s capital city, where you’ll find several churches, palaces, and other noteworthy buildings.

We’ll dive into each of its main attractions in a second, but regardless of what you visit, try to make it to the Kremlin in time for sunset — because seeing its golden domes glinting in the late-afternoon light makes for one spectacular tourist photo!

Click here to learn about Kremlin tickets prices .

1 – Admire the abundance of Kremlin towers | the Kremlin

Kremlin towers, Moscow

As your eyes dart down the towering red-brick Kremlin wall, the first thing you’ll notice is its large towers of all different styles and sizes.

With a whopping 20 separate minarets towering above the historic area, each with its own name, colors, features and history, a guided tour to learn each of their fascinating stories is a must.

To give you a little taste, the Konstantin-Yeleninskaya Tower once housed a torture chamber. Saviour’s Tower at the main entrance boasts a famous chiming clock, the Secret Tower houses a secret escape tunnel, and the Trinity Tower is the tallest of them all.

2 – Visit the enormous Grand Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow

A remarkable attraction in terms of both beauty and history, the Grand Kremlin Palace is an ornate rococo-style building that was commissioned during the reign of Nicholas I, and today acts as the official residence of none other than the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

Perched atop Borovitsky Hill, its 125-meter-long facade is unmissable, making for impressive photos.

Take note: guided tours are few and far between, so you’ll have to book a few weeks in advance if you want to check out the decorated inner sanctum.

Directions in Google Maps

3 – People-watch in Cathedral Square | the Kremlin

Cathedral Square, Moscow

One of the most popular areas in all of Moscow (sometimes called Sobornaya Square), with multiple massive churches at its heart, Cathedral Square is flanked by several historic buildings and is never shy of a tourist crowd.

The three main churches — each spectacular works of architecture in their own right — are the Cathedral of the Assumption (the oldest and the biggest of all Kremlin churches), the 16th-century Cathedral of the Archangel Michael (known for its beautiful Corinthian gables and turrets), and the golden-domed Cathedral of the Annunciation (which connects to the Grand Kremlin Palace’s main building).

Throw in the 60-meter-high Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the lesser-known Church of the Twelve Apostles , the Church of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe (underrated yet famous for its marvelous stained-glass windows), and the medieval residence-turned-museum that is The Patriarch’s Palace, and you can see why this square is regularly number one on any visitor’s list of things to do in Moscow.

4 – See a show at the State Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

State Kremlin Palace, Moscow

Just like the Grand Kremlin Palace , this theater and prestigious concert hall — with its grandiose facade and multiple sculptures — is another ornate building that’s worth admiring.

A popular place to hold conferences, the State Kremlin Palace was originally built as part of a larger complex for Communist Party meetings, but today hosts some of the biggest events in Moscow — we’re talkin’ sold-old ballet performances, world-famous concerts, opera shows, and festivals.

Check the website to see what’s on the calendar for your visit!

5 – See centuries worth of national treasures at the Armoury Chamber | the Kremlin

Armoury Chamber, Moscow

For anyone with an interest in historical weaponry and armor, this museum — which dates back to the early 1500s when it was created as the royal armory — is a must-see.

The Armoury Chamber (as well as the Diamond Fund Exhibition) is home to some of the most valuable objects that were originally owned by Russian monarchs — from jeweled heirlooms and intricate boxes to ornately decorated pistols and swords — many of which are centuries old.

Within the armoury chamber, you’ll also find the Russian historical regalia, a collection of artifacts that belonged to Russian tsars and emperors between the 13th and 20th centuries, highlighted by the Ivory Throne and the Monomakh’s Cap.

  • Armoury Chamber tours

6 – Step inside the Palace of the Facets | the Kremlin

Palace of the Facets, Moscow

The Palace of the Facets is one of the most underrated buildings in all of Moscow, largely because it’s not as widely promoted or photographed even though its exterior adorns some postcards.

From the outside, it blends in with the crowd. But step inside and you’ll discover a world of beauty and wonder — its frescoes, golden columns and enormous rooms are a sight to behold

The Palace of the Facets is not only a piece of art (literally, with painted walls), dating back over 500 years, but also acted as the dining hall for the Tsars.

7 – Feel small next to the Tsar Bell | the Kremlin

Tsar Bell, Moscow

Making Philadelphia’s famous Liberty Bell look diminutive in size, this monument , which never actually functioned as a bell due to its immense size (at 205 tons and standing 20.1 feet high!), has found fame in recent years for being the heaviest attraction inside The Kremlin.

With the bronze landmark’s claim to fame of being the biggest bell in the world, it presents as a great, quick photo op when roaming through the Kremlin.

8 – Check out the Senate Palace | the Kremlin

Senate Palace, Moscow

Another architectural masterpiece that’s tucked away within the Kremlin, this palace is famous for being one of Moscow’s most beautiful buildings — its yellow façade curves around to face inward and truly engulf anyone who stands near it.

Built back in the late 1700s, today it houses the Russian presidential administration and, unfortunately for us, is off limits to the general public.

Still, admiring it from outside, with the nearby Tsar Cannon, is certainly good enough.

9 – Grab a photo in front of the Tsar Cannon | the Kremlin

Tsar Cannon, Moscow

One of Moscow’s most iconic symbols, Tsar Cannon (or Royal Cannon) is a cannon that was manufactured in 1586 and resides — yep, you guessed it — within The Kremlin.

Following the theme of the enormous Tsar Bell, it weighs a whopping 39 tons — making it one of the world’s largest cannons even though it has never been shot.

And while its size may be impressive on its own, what makes this cannon so special is that it’s adorned with intricate carvings, ornaments, inscriptions, and a figure of a horse-riding Tsar Feodor the Bellringer.

  • walking tours in Moscow

10 – Join a tour of the Terem Palace | the Kremlin

Terem Palace, Moscow

A stunning, fairytale-like palace that’s steeped in history and detail, the five-story Terem Palace is one of the most underrated attractions within The Kremlin. However, as part of the official residence of the Russian President, much of it is off-limits to snap-happy tourists.

That said, there’s still plenty to be seen in the accessible areas by joining a group tour: a beautiful white-stone carved staircase; curved, decorated, and painted ceilings; and an enchanting low-vaulted Antechamber with lancet windows.

The Red Square

As we move away from the Kremlin, our next stop is the most photographed, picturesque public area in the country.

Flanked by gorgeous, colorful towers and buildings, the Red Square is the most famous square in all of Russia — and one that’s steeped in history, patriotism, and communist symbolism.

Home to some of Moscow’s greatest landmarks including St Basil’s Cathedral (featuring its iconic onion domes), Lenin Mausoleum, GUM department store (an architectural masterpiece that is the most famous shopping mall in Russia), The State History Museum, and more, it’s not just a sight to see in Moscow but also one that has been seen by hundreds of millions from around the world.

11 – Make your way inside St. Basil’s Cathedral | Red Square

St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow

Built back in the early 1500s, this quirky-looking, 65-meter-tall Orthodox church is so unique and detailed that it’s earned its place as one of 16 UNESCO cultural sites in Russia — and, thanks to many Hollywood productions like Bond: Skyfall (2012), has only continued to increase in fame.

Its exterior boasts multi-colored domes crowned with golden onion top spires. Meanwhile, inside, you’ll find nine small, separate chapels, and plenty of decorated walls and windows — all best viewed as part of a walking tour of Red Square.

12 – Visit the State Historical Museum | Red Square

State Historical Museum, Moscow

One of seven museums that can be found around the expansive Red Square, the State Historical Museum is one of Moscow’s most revered.

Housed in a neoclassical building (the same as GUM), it features more than 4 million items relating to Russian history — making it so vast and incredible that you’ll need at least two hours inside to see just a fraction.

While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Marshal Georgy Zhukov Monument, a towering horse-riding statue of arguably the most famous and heroic Soviet military commander of WWII, which can be found in front of the museum.

13 – Shop till you drop at GUM | Red Square

GUM department store, Moscow

The official state department store of Russia, having opened in 1893 and become one of Moscow’s most iconic attractions for shopaholics over the years, is known for its gorgeous architecture that looks more like a palace than anything else.

Entering through its massive golden doors, you’ll be surprised to find an extensive shopping center with more than 100 luxury and world-renowned brands of clothing and accessories for men, women, and youngsters.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, stop into the Gastronom №1 for a bite to eat or take a stroll through its corridors to appreciate the building’s history and beauty.

14 – Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum | Red Square

Lenin's Mausoleum, Moscow

Another iconic Red Square attraction is Lenin’s Mausoleum, a small yet foreboding building that houses the embalmed corpse of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin (who led Russia through the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917).

Opened in 1930 after his death and standing at more than 12 meters tall, it presents as both a unique and macabre site — and, considering the life-like nature of the body, certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.

Note: Entrance is free of charge, but expect to be searched by security before being allowed in.

15 – Ride the Moscow Metro, enjoying the beautiful stations along the way

Moscow Metro, Russia

As we leave the Red Square, the next cab off the rank is Moscow’s unbelievable artistic Metro network (rivaled only in beauty by that of Stockholm). Constructed between the 1930s and 1950s, its stations were built by hand with a wide range of artistic themes — from socialist realist to Slavic pagan.

Tips: The best way to experience them is as part of a Moscow Metro tour, which can be booked online. However, if you prefer exploring solo, then make sure to visit the Mayakovskaya Metro Station which is known for its seemingly endless archways.

You may also check out Dostoyevskaya, named after a famous writer with murals depicting his stories. The Ploshchad Revolutsii Metro Station is another option where a handful of Socialist statues provide a wonderful contrast to the red marble arches.

Whether you’re looking for something large that can accommodate groups of friends or something smaller with a bit more VIP style, there are several dinner cruises available to suit any taste and budget.

68 – Explore the wonderful Izmailovo District

Izmailovo District, Moscow

One of the city’s best-kept secrets, Izmailovo ‘s focal point is its Kremlin, a colorful wooden complex. Built in 2007, it has had unique museums and flea markets pop up nearby in the years since.

Throughout the area, you’ll uncover museums dedicated to vodka, break and Russian folk art. The district’s charming open-air flea market has all kinds of crafts and souvenirs are haggled on the daily.

Don’t miss Izmailovo Park , which is an enormous 300-hectare space that plays host to souvenir vendors, forest walking paths and even an ice rink in winter.

With so much to see in the district, savvy travelers typically opt for a guided tour.

69 – Sip on a cocktail at the award-winning City Space Bar and Lounge

City Space Bar and Lounge, Moscow

Self-dubbed as one of the world’s top 10 bars, with accolades like Luxury Travel Guide’s Bar of the Year 2018, this iconic and luxurious watering hole doesn’t need much of an introduction.

Perched sky-high on the 34th floor of Swissotel Krasnye Holmy, the circular lounge bar slings signature cocktails and dishes up truly stunning views of the city.

Hot tip: While there’s never a poor time to visit, aim to arrive an hour or so before sunset, that’s when the city will truly sparkle below.

70 – Pamper yourself at the Sanduny Baths

Sanduny Baths, Moscow

If you’re looking for something to ease that throbbing headache after a night of pub crawling, why not try the famous Sanduny Baths , a quintessentially Russian experience?

Famed as one of the world’s most beautiful public bathhouses, Sanduny’s steam rooms and pools are said to be some of the best in Moscow. But for something totally unique, you can’t go past the birch twigs massage (read: beating).

71 – Spruce up your social media feed at some Insta-worthy restaurants

insta-worthy restaurants in Moscow

While a good meal is always part of the restaurant experience, getting a good pic for Instagram is half the fun!

Luckily, there are tons of excellent eateries that combine great food with gorgeous aesthetics.

Big Wine Freaks has a fantastic drink selection (naturally), and its dark, classy rooms full of elegant light fixtures and plush furniture bring to mind a spy’s hideout.

Meanwhile, Sempre adopts more of a naturalistic approach, surrounding diners with ferns and greenery.

And at Black Market Moscow , you can choose between indoor and outdoor spaces, each featuring their own unique designs and dining experiences.

Take a bite and snap some pics!

72 – Unleash your inner party animal at the Night clubs

nightlife in Moscow

When the sun goes down, you’ll get to see a whole new side of Moscow: its amazing nightlife!

Head to Propaganda for a bite or a beverage, then dance to some quality club tunes.

Or get a little wild at Chesterfield , where you can pay a flat fee and drink as much as you want – the perfect recipe for fun!

And at Rock’N’ Roll , there’s a new form of excitement every day, from DJ sets to live bands, all playing a lively mix of rock music from across the decades.

With all this excitement, you won’t want to book anything early the next day!

How to get to Moscow?

Unless you’re feeling up to the challenge of a long train journey, you’ll most likely be flying into Moscow.

Luckily, it has three international airports to choose from: Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Domodedovo.

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll be able to easily reach the city via the Aeroexpress train.

Where to stay in Moscow?

Golden Ring Hotel  will make you feel like you’re on top of the world, whether you’re getting pampered at the beauty salon or enjoying a meal in the rooftop restaurants.

Or check in to Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel & Business Center , which boasts everything from riverside views and a gym to nearby shopping areas and relaxing Turkish baths.

At AZIMUT Hotel Olympic Moscow , the massages, international cuisine, sauna, and swimming pool will keep you happily occupied in between excursions.

And at sister property AZIMUT Hotel Smolenskaya Moscow , you can savor a nice meal or admire the scenery from the lounge, or stroll over to Gorky Park or roam along Stary Arbat Street.

Meanwhile, Oblaka Hotel blends simple charm and a convenient location, with charming red brick exteriors and easy access to historic sites and a metro station.

Where to go next?

If you’re short on time but still want to see the best of Moscow, try some multi-day tours ; they’ll provide all of the coolest sights and experiences in an efficient format.

After that, it’s time to start exploring further afield!

Though it’s a bit of a trek, St. Petersburg is well worth the journey!

With its famously decadent buildings to its lively arts scene, this is the perfect place to soak up some culture; but there are also some more offbeat options, like folk shows, vodka tastings, and even an amusement park!

And from the jaw-dropping designs of the metro stations (yes, you read that correctly) to the glimmer of Faberge eggs, it showcases beauty at every turn.

How much do caddies make at the Masters? Here's how their pay at the PGA tournament works.

By Khristopher J. Brooks

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 3:54 PM EDT / CBS News

Being a caddie at the Masters is an entirely different experience than doing the job anywhere else — just ask Ken Martin.

"Caddies are treated really great at Augusta," said Martin, who caddied for Scottish golfer Sandy Lyle at the major tournament last year. "We had our own locker room. They feed us just wonderful food — the best food I've ever had really. But it's a long week. You have to be fit to get around that hilly course."

Some of the biggest names in professional golf, including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, will converge on the famously hilly course Thursday to compete in the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. Golfers are playing for a multimillion dollar cash prize and the chance to don the coveted green jacket for a year.

  • How to livestream PGA Tour golf: Your options, explained (plus 2024 schedule)
  • Caddie's misstep costs professional golfer six-figure prize
  • Pittsburgh Central Catholic graduates teaming up as player and caddie duo at Masters tournament
  • Evans Scholarships sending 70 high school caddies to college for free

Much of this year's attention will be on the cash prize the winning golfer will receive at this year's tournament. The purse for the 2023 Masters totaled $18 million, which was $3 million more than the purse the year before — the largest year-over-year increase in tournament history. Of that total, 2023 winner Jon Rahm took home $3.24 million .

But players aren't the only ones in line for a big payout. The winner's caddie can easily go home with a six-figure paycheck after four days of work. But snagging the four-day gig is the culmination of years spent working one-on-one with the same professional golfer, Martin said.

Caddies develop a strong friendship with a golfer long before it's time for an elite competition like the Masters, Martin said. Fans seated in the stands, as well those watching at home, can only see the caddie handing the player a club, but in reality, there's a constant back-and-forth communication taking place between golfer and caddie during commercial breaks and while the two are walking to the next hole, he explained. Martin, who played professionally from 1982 to 2015, now teaches the sport at Keiser University in Florida.

Aside from carrying the heavy bag, the caddie also provides input on which club to use, as well as swing technique, Martin said. That's because most caddies working PGA Tour games  are former professional players with a wealth of knowledge on the game.

But technique is only a small part of the exchange, he added. With a strong camaraderie forged over the years, it's very likely the two spend most of time chatting like old friends, he said.

"It's boring to talk about only golf for four to six hours," Martin said. "You're out there for a long time together so the friendship part of it plays a larger role."

How much do caddies make at the Masters?

Caddies like Martin earn a salary from two sources during the Masters. One part is a weekly wage between $2,000 and $4,000 depending on the caddie's experience, the Association of Professional Caddies and the Caddies Network told CBS MoneyWatch. The weekly wage helps caddies recoup financially because they're required to pay their own travel to Georgia, along with hotel and food while working the tournament.

Caddies also get a percentage of whatever their player earns after the tournament ends. The caddie of the Master's winner will get 10% of the prize money. For context, Jon Rahm won the Masters' last year and got $3.24 million.

The caddie for the runner up at the Masters will get 7% of that player's prize winnings; every caddie after that will get 5%.

Caddies Network CEO John von Stade told CBS MoneyWatch there are rare occasions when a caddie has a private contract with the player, in which case that person's salary will not follow the traditional setup.

Over the past five years, caddie have seen some positive changes. PGA Tour officials have increased caddies' weekly wages and players' prize money has also climbed — potentially giving caddies a chance to bring home six figures after a tournament.

"But what hasn't changed is, if your player doesn't make the cut, there is no other source of money other than the weekly fee," von Stade said.

Popular Hello Kitty Cafe truck headlines Texas locations

S anrio fans, get your credit cards ready. For the umpteenth time in a row, the acclaimed and highly beloved Hello Kitty Cafe truck is again conducting its Texas tour.

This year, the merch-heavy food truck will be touring around four locations across the state, including two Houston-area stops. The truck visited Texas in September 2023, stopping at five malls across the state. Running from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. the truck has regularly seen sold out crowds, with lines starting hours before opening.

Armed with adorable Hello Kitty eats and drinks, the truck will only visit four locations this year, one less than last year:

  • Apr. 20: Houston–The Woodlands Mall
  • Apr. 27: Friendswood–Baybrook Mall
  • May 4: Fort Worth–The Shops at Clearfork
  • May 11: Plano–The Shops at Willow Bend

Boasting a small, yet super cute menu, the trucks offer a selection of cookies like macarons and madeleines. Aside from the snackies, the Hello Kitty Cafe trucks are largely known for their selection of limited edition merchandise—only available at the trucks. The popular Sanrio merch, always in high demand, includes T-shirts and even lunch boxes. Fans can expect long lines early in the morning and a high chance of sold-out merchandise. The trucks are cashless; only credit and debit cards are accepted.

The viral cafe trucks began making their annual journeys across America since 2014, briefly pausing service during the coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, the viral truck made two stops in Houston in response to high demand . The truck later returned to Houston in 2022, after pandemic restrictions were eased. In 2023, the truck visited five spots around Texas, adding El Paso to its route.
