Have you ever wondered what hidden treasures are kept in the Cathedral Library?
The medieval library room accessed via a winding spiral staircase is located high above the main body of the Cathedral and is over 500 years old. Join the Cathedral archivist to find out about some of her favourites from our collection of over 6000 books and archives dating back to the 10th century. This will be a chance to see items that are too large or fragile to bring out for public tours.

From the murder of Thomas Becket to the Peasants’ Revolt and the Black Death, we sometimes think of the Middle Ages as a dark, backward and unchanging time, characterised by violence, ignorance and superstition. But we couldn’t be more wrong.

Explore Gloucester Cathedral from anywhere in new virtual tour
Take a virtual tour of Gloucester Cathedral to explore the most-loved spaces and delve into the more hidden areas. Using modern technology, this new way of viewing the entire Cathedral has opened up this 1,000-year-old sacred space to everyone, anywhere in the world.
The virtual tour is available on the Cathedral’s website , allowing users to journey through almost every corner of this remarkable building. Take a look around the Nave, Quire and Lady Chapel before delving into other historic areas such as the medieval Library, iconic Tower and subterranean Crypt.
The tour was created by Scott Currie, owner of Gloucester-based company Virtual360toursglos.
Scott says, “Having lived in Gloucester for almost 16 years, I have long been aware of the importance and beauty of the Cathedral. Last summer, I showed some family members around who were visiting from Canada, and they absolutely loved it. This inspired me to approach the team to see whether they would be interested in working together to create a new virtual tour. It took around seven visits to complete, and I hope the end result does justice to the sheer scale and beauty of our wonderful Cathedral.”
To create the virtual tour, Scott used state-of-the-art cameras which sync with satellites to precisely pinpoint a location. The cameras were operated using a tablet, spinning 360 degrees to capture over one million pixels at each location. This process was repeated over 850 times to cover the entire Cathedral. The images were then knitted together to create a digital floor plan, with information tags added throughout to bring the space to life.
The virtual tour will allow everyone to navigate through these areas at their own pace, from wherever they are in the world.
Lorna Giles, Head of Visitor Experience at Gloucester Cathedral, added: “We are hugely grateful to Scott and Virtual360toursglos for creating this spectacular new virtual tour for us. As well as inspiring people to come and visit us in future, it is amazing to see how modern technology can open up this sacred space to those who perhaps aren’t able to discover it in person. We very much hope that everyone will enjoy using this wonderful new resource.”

Take a tour of Gloucester Cathedral’s beautiful 15th century library
Apr 17th, 2017 | City Centre , News
Visitors to Gloucester Cathedral will have the rare chance to visit the beautiful 15th century monastic library next Saturday. Located high above the main body of the Cathedral (you will need to go up thirty-eight spiral steps!) the library is a hidden gem that was originally part of the Abbey and holds a wonderful collection of books and manuscripts dating back to the 11th century. Volunteers and staff will be on duty to talk about the library and answer any questions. This year we are offering visitors the chance to discover one aspect of the Library collections in depth. On 22 April we will focus on geography and visitors will have an opportunity to see such treasures as 1611 Speed maps of the Country, our first edition Sir Robert Atkyn’s history of Gloucestershire with its glorious Kip engravings and the first eyewitness published account of Russian culture from the 16th Century. Library Tours take place at 10.45am, 11.45am, 1.45pm and 2.45pm, tickets can be purchased in the Cathedral Gift Shop for £7.00, (under 16s go free). Future tour dates and topics are 10 June – medicine; 1 July – music; 22 July – Bibles Gloucester News Centre – http://gloucesternewscentre.co.uk

Gloucester cathedral tours, the cathedral tour.
There are guides at the Cathedral that can bring your experience here to life. They are trained volunteers that have learnt about the architecture of the Cathedral, the daily life of the monks, and about the filming of Harry Potter. Guides are on hand 10.45 till 3.15 Nov-March, and 10.30 till 4.00 in high season, Sunday guides 12 – 2.30.
There are self-guide leaflets for sale at the bookshop which cover all aspects; a general guide, children’s, art & craft, the organ, great lives and gargoyles.
The Crypt Tour
Crypt tours are free. There are four tours daily, at 11.30, 12.30, 1.30, and 2.30. On Sundays there are two tours at 12.30 and 1.30. Tours last about 1hr, just wait outside the entrance to the crypt which is along the South Aisle on the right of the steps that lead up to the Quire. The tour is short at 20mins yet very informative. Many visitors expect to see tombs which is not the case, the tour is about the construction of the Cathedral, the daily life of the monks with an interesting anecdote or two – no spoilers on this page!
The Tower Tour
The tower tour lasts about 1hr and is for those 6yrs or older who are fit enough to climb 269 steps up and down! The medieval spiral staircase leads to a magnificent view of Gloucester 40 miles or so across Gloucestershire towards the Malverns and Cotswolds. This is one of just a few towers that have 12 bells. Also the ‘Great Peter’ is the only medieval bell of its size in the country.
The tower season starts in April and finishes at the end of October. The cost for adults is £7.00 and children over 6yrs just £1.00. Generally Wed – Sat tours (also Mon and Tue during school holidays), are at 2.30pm. There are extra 1.30 tours on Saturdays and on Bank holidays there are extra 11.30 and 1.30 tours.
The bells chime at 8am 1pm and 5pm daily (4pm on Sats and Suns) so you will not be up the tower at the time. The chiming machine of 1763 is on view; today the bells use a digital control system. There are about 100 tunes available to play and usually two tunes are played often inkeeping with the season or festival.
Library Tours
A healthy 38 spiral steps lead to a fabulous collection of books and manuscripts that date back to C11th. You can view rare books and chat to the staff and guide for about 45 – 60 minutes. Large bags cannot be brought into the library so must be left in a secure area. Cost £7.00 per adult while children are free. The price includes admission to the Whispering Gallery and Tribune.
