Lodging Safety

Millions of people from around the world undertake the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca every year. Umrah is a pilgrimage that can be completed at any time of the year.

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah offers an electronic portal for Hajj registration and bookings. The portal allows for electronic Hajj visa applications and provides additional information, such as an FAQ page and awareness guides.

In order to participate in Hajj, U.S. citizens must have a permit issued through the Saudi Arabian Ministry Website. That rule applies whether you are visiting or living in Saudi Arabia.  If you participate in Hajj without a permit, you may be deported, detained, fined, or banned from future visits to Saudi Arabia.

Refer to https://hajj.nusuk.sa/ for all related information, including required vaccines and medical insurance, specific mobile apps needed to enter holy sites, and other details. Please also see the current Travel Advisory and Country Information page for Saudi Arabia.

Note: Once you arrive in Mecca for Hajj, you must get permission from the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah before leaving Saudi Arabia. This rule applies until Hajj is over.

Personal Security

Travelers seeking to perform Hajj and Umrah are often targets for scammers. Watch out for dishonest guides or people pretending to be tour operators, who may leave pilgrims stranded without paying their bills. Also, be cautious of hotels that demand fees to return passports.

There are reports of pickpocketing, theft, and other crime in Mecca, particularly in the area of the Grand Mosque. There are also reports of crime in Medina, where there are large crowds of people. Always carry contact information for your hotel and tour operator.

Keep travel documents (your U.S. passport or U.S. “green card” residency permit) secure during your trip.  Make two copies of your passport—including pages stamped with Saudi visas—with one saved digitally and the other in a safe place while you travel.

Emergency Contact Information for U.S. Citizens

  • U.S. Embassy Riyadh: (966) (11) 835-4000
  • U.S. Consulate General Jeddah: (966) (12) 220-5000
  • U.S. Consulate General Dhahran: (966) (13) 839-5700

Between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time in Saudi Arabia, Sunday through Thursday, ask for the American Citizen Services Unit. For emergency cases outside of those hours or during holidays,  use the same numbers listed above to reach a duty officer for assistance.

Visa Information

The Hijri calendar is used in Saudi Arabia for all official functions.  Please review the dates on your visa carefully, and make sure you know when it expires.

Do not overstay your Hajj or Umrah visa . If you stay in Saudi Arabia longer than you are allowed, you may have to pay fines in order to depart the country.  Fines can be thousands of dollars. You might also be held in detention until your deportation proceedings. Additionally, you could be banned from returning to Saudi Arabia in the future.

Permitted areas of travel and duration of stay:   If you are unsure, ask Saudi airport officials or the Passport Office (jawazat) for clarification upon arrival.

  • Hajj and Umrah (pilgrimage) visas are  not valid for work or residency .
  • Non-Muslims are forbidden to travel to Mecca and the portions of Medina which are considered sacred.
  • All pilgrims visiting for Hajj must leave Saudi Arabia after the completion of Hajj.

Women Pilgrims

Women can register for Hajj without a male guardian if they go in a group with other women.

Travelers With Disabilities

Be prepared for standards of accessibility and accommodation below the minimum of what is required in the United States. While most of the Holy Sites, such as the Grand Mosque in Mecca, are accessible to disabled people , most hotels and transportation options are not. Check with your tour group provider to ensure your needs are well known and can be accommodated.

Photographs

You are not allowed to take photos (still or video, even with your phone) at the Holy Mosque in Mecca or the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. If you break this rule, your device may be taken away.

When is Hajj 2023?

Rituals of Hajj 2023 will commence from the evening of Sunday, 25th of June 2023, and will continue till the evening of Friday, 30th June, 2023. This is the tentative date as the actual date is contingent on the sighting of the moon of Dhul Hijjah, 1444, the 12th and last month of Islamic Calendar .

“And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah.”

( Surah Al-Baqarah 2:196)

Learn about “ Step by Step Umrah Guide ”

Hajj ( حَجّ ‎ ) is an Arabic word which means ‘Aim’ or ‘Destination’ or ‘Purpose’. Hajj is the ultimate journey to the House of Allah (Kaaba) .

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam . Hajj is a duty on every adult, sane, free Muslim who is capable of performing it once in a lifetime. A capable person is the one who can afford the trip both financially and health-wise.

This obligation of Hajj is also evident from the following Hadith:

'Prophet (S.A.W.) addressed his companions and said: “O people, Allah has made Hajj obligatory for you; so perform Hajj.”'

( Sahih Muslim: 1337)

Hajj rituals are performed between the 8th and 13th day of the month of Dhul Hijjah.

Benefits of Hajj

Hajj involves travel and it requires more effort than other kinds of worship. This is the reason that Allah Has only made it mandatory for His servants to perform it only once in a lifetime with the stipulation that one must be able to do it both financially and physically. The benefits and hidden wisdom of Hajj are many and some of these (according to Hadith) are given below:

1- Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam

Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) said:

“Islam is based on five (principles) and performing Hajj is one of them.”

(Sahih Bukhari: 8)

Since Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, only this fact indicates its importance and it also shows how much Allah loves it.

2- All Previous Sins will be forgiven

As narrated by Abu Hurairah (R.A.), Prophet (S.A.W.) said:

“Whoever performs Hajj for Allah's pleasure and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew.”

(Sahih Bukhari: 1521)

According to the Hadith, if Hajj is performed according to Sunnah and just to please Allah then it will purify all the sins and pilgrims will become sinless as a newborn child.

3- Paradise is the Reward

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (R.A.)   that Prophet (S.A.W.) said:

"And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise."

(Sahih Bukhari: 1773)

Hadith is self-explanatory and clearly states that if Hajj is performed with the right intention and according to Sunnah, then Allah will definitely accept the Hajj, and the reward of Hajj accepted by Allah is nothing but Jannah (Paradise) .

4- Pilgrims of Hajj are Guests of Allah

In Islam, guests are treated with utmost respect, love and dignity. This fact is also evident from the following Hadith:

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should serve his guest generously.”

(Sahih Bukhari: 6135)

In this hadith, Prophet (S.A.W.) has directed us that how we should treat our guests. Then just think about how the guest will be treated when hosted by Allah , The Creator of All Worlds.

Following hadith clearly shows that Pilgrims of Hajj and Umrah are guests of Allah.

“The pilgrims performing Hajj and ‘Umrah are a delegation to Allah. If they call upon Him, He will answer them; and if they ask for His forgiveness, He will forgive them.”

(Ibn Majah: 2892)

So perform Hajj and become a guest of Allah and ask Him whatever you want in this world and the hereafter .

5- For Women, Hajj is equal to Jihad

Narrated by Aisha (R.A.) :

‘I said, "O Allah's Messenger (S.A.W.)! We consider Jihad as the best deed." The Prophet (S.A.W.) said, "The best Jihad (for women) is Hajj Mabrur."’

(Sahih Bukhari: 1520)

According to the hadith, Hajj is the best Jihad for a woman (as women are not required to actively participate in hand-to-hand combats).

How Hajj is Performed?

Hajj begins on the 8th day of Dhul-Hijjah and ends on the 13 th day of the same Islamic month. Many rituals are performed during Hajj and these may be completed over the course of the 5 days. Every year, millions of Muslims around the world participate in this Holy Pilgrimage to the city of Makkah , Saudi Arabia.

Complete Hajj comprises of many rituals which include Type of Hajj, Fundamentals (Faraidh), Obligations (Wajibaat) and Sunnah of Hajj, donning Ihraam, what should be done on each day of Hajj, etc. All these steps cannot be covered in this short article. Please visit our ‘How Hajj is Performed – A step by step guide to know all about Hajj.

Eid Al Adha

On the 10th of Dhul Hijja, Eid al Adha   is celebrated. It is the day when Muslims slaughter an animal, generally a sheep, a goat, a cow, or a camel; remembering the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) . Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) intended to slaughter his son Prophet Ismail (A.S.) on Allah’s orders, but Allah replaced Prophet Ismail (A.S.) with a sheep just when Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) was about to go ahead with the sacrifice. This submissive act of faith by Prophet Ibrahim (RA) is an integral part of Hajj as it signifies trust and total surrender to the will of the Almighty Allah. Stoning the wall of Satan (Jamarat) is the reminder of faith that one should have in Allah, as shown by Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) and Prophet Ismael (A.S.).

After completing all the rituals of Hajj, many people go to the Prophet's Mosque (Masjid-e-Nabawi) in Madinah  but remember one thing that this is optional and not part of Hajj / Umrah.

Hajj not only removes our sins but also gives us a chance to unite with our Muslim brothers and sisters from all over the world.

May Allah accept the Hajj of all our Muslim brothers and sisters and grant them the greatest reward. Also, May Allah give us the chance to offer this great ritual at least once in our lifetime.

Every year, millions of Muslims gather in Makkah, Saudi Arabia for the annual pilgrimage, called Hajj . Arriving from every corner of the globe, pilgrims of all nationalities, ages, and colors come together for the largest religious gathering in the world. One of the five "pillars of faith," the Hajj is a duty upon every Muslim adult who is financially and physically able to make the journey.  Every Muslim , male or female, strives to make the trip at least once in a lifetime.

During the days of the Hajj, millions of pilgrims will gather in Makkah, Saudi Arabia to pray together, eat together, remember historical events, and celebrate the glory of Allah.

When Does the Pilgrimage Happen?

The pilgrimage occurs during the last month of the Islamic year , called "Dhul-Hijjah" (i.e. "The Month of Hajj "). The pilgrimage rites occur during a 5-day period, between the 8th - 12th days of this lunar month. The event is also marked by the Islamic holiday , Eid al-Adha , which falls on the 10th day of the lunar month.

In recent years, overcrowding of pilgrims during the Hajj has caused some people to ask why the Hajj cannot be spread out throughout the year. This is not possible due to Islamic tradition. The dates of Hajj have been established for over a thousand years. Pilgrimage *is* done at other times throughout the year; this is known as Umrah . The Umrah includes some of the same rites, and can be done throughout the year. However, it does not fulfill the requirement for a Muslim to attend Hajj if able.

Al Jazeera takes a look at the world’s largest religious gathering Mecca sees every year.

Hajj is the largest annual religious gathering of Muslims. It takes place in the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijja in and around the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

This year, Hajj will start on Monday, June 26, following the sighting of the moon in Saudi Arabia and Eid al-Adha will be celebrated three days later, on June 28.

The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and a once-in-a-lifetime duty for all able-bodied Muslims to perform if they can afford it. It is meant to cleanse followers of sin and bring them closer to God.

Hajj starts on June 26

Hajj falls on the eighth day of Dhul-Hijja, the 12th and final month in the Islamic lunar calendar which shifts 10-12 days earlier each year.

Mecca is known for its hot desert climate with temperatures regularly exceeding 42C (107F) in the summer months. It will be at least another seven years until the average high temperatures will be below 38C (100F). Here is when Hajj will take place over the next 33 years.

How is Hajj performed?

Muslim pilgrims from all over the world arrive in Mecca on the seventh day of Dhul-Hijja – falling on June 25 this year – and set their intention to perform Hajj.

They are required to enter Mecca in the purified state of ihram. The state of ihram is a symbol of humility and spiritual focus and serves to unify pilgrims from different backgrounds.

For men, this means being clothed in seamless white cloth only, with one piece wrapped around the waist and another draped over the left shoulder, with the right shoulder bare at all times.

Women can wear any plain clothing of their choice but should observe the rules of hijab and cannot cover their faces.

The infographic below takes a look at the process of Hajj at a glance.

INTERACTIVE_WHEN_IS_EID_ALAZHA_AND_HAJJ_2023_7_thejourney step by step-1687150947

The Hajj re-enacts the Prophet Muhammad’s farewell pilgrimage in 632 AD, in which he traced the footsteps of the prophets Abraham and Ishmael through the desert.

Central to the Muslim pilgrimage is the Grand Mosque of Mecca which houses the Kaaba, a cube-shaped structure elegantly draped in black silk with verses of the Quran woven into it with gold and silver threads.

Day 1: On the first day of Hajj, the pilgrims perform tawaf, which refers to walking around the Kaaba seven times, intended to bring the pilgrim spiritually closer to God.

The ritual of sai follows this – walking or running seven times between the two hills of Safa and Marwa to commemorate the actions of Hajar, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim, who walked between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times in search of water for her son Ismail.

From here, the pilgrims are transported to the tent city of Mina, roughly 8 kilometres (4.9 miles) from Mecca, where they pray for the night.

Day 2: On the second day, the pilgrims head towards Mount Arafat, where they pray for their sins to be forgiven. They are then taken to the plains of Muzdalifa, spending another night in the open air for worship.

Day 3: On the third day, the pilgrims return to Mina for the stoning of the Jamarat – the three stone structures that represent the devil. This is followed by sacrificing an animal.

For other Muslims around the world, this is the first day of Eid al-Adha. Following the sacrifice, the pilgrims proceed to shave or trim their hair and change from the ihram.

Days 4-6: In the following days, the pilgrims perform tawaf and sai again in Mecca and then go back to stone the three Jamarats.

Before leaving Mecca, pilgrims must do one last tawaf to complete their Hajj.

INTERACTIVE_WHEN_IS_EID_ALAZHA_AND_HAJJ_2023_7_map-1687150924

For millions unable to make the pilgrimage this year, a digital experience may offer a glimpse of what it is like to worship at Islam’s holiest site. In 2015, Al Jazeera produced a 360-degree VR experience that takes viewers on a tour to see the major landmarks that millions of Muslims visit during the Hajj.

Experience the journey by moving your phone around or drag the video around to see what Mecca looks like from all angles.

How many people perform Hajj?

Hajj is the largest Muslim gathering in the world. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, on average two million people entered Mecca for the pilgrimage each year.

In 2022, amid COVID restrictions, nearly one million pilgrims performed Hajj.

INTERACTIVE_WHEN_IS_EID_ALAZHA_AND_HAJJ_2023_7_number of pilgrims per year-1687150933

This year will be the first time since the pandemic that numbers will resume to the two-million mark.

Muslim women for the first time will be allowed to perform Hajj on their own from around the world. The majority of the pilgrims are from Asian countries, according to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s statistics bureau, followed by pilgrims from Arab nations.

When is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of the Sacrifice, is celebrated on the third day of Hajj – falling on June 28 this year – and lasts for three days. It is the second major Muslim festival in the Islamic calendar after Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting.

On the first day of Eid al-Adha, Muslims who can afford are required to sacrifice an animal and distribute a set percentage of its meat to those less fortunate. This is done in symbolic remembrance of the Prophet Ibrahim, who, in Islamic tradition it is believed, was asked to sacrifice his son Ismail by God.

Hajj is one of the five pillars of islam and a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for every muslim, if they are able.

Since the introduction of mass vaccinations, relaxed social distancing and travel laws, authorities are eager to welcome people from abroad to perform Hajj in June, to pre-Covid levels.

Two years ago, the kingdom closed its borders to contain the spread of Covid-19 and Hajj was restricted to 1,000 domestic pilgrims. Last year, numbers were limited to 60,000 because of the health threat posed by the Covid-19 pandemic .

Saudi Arabia said those wishing to perform Hajj have to apply online.

Hajj attracts nearly two million Muslims and generates about $12 billion in revenue for Saudi Arabia every year.

Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah Abdul Fattah Mashat said Hajj, as well as Umrah, a shorter pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of the year, are major components of the Saudi Vision 2030.

One of the programme's aims is to boost the religious tourism sector and host 30 million Umrah pilgrims annually by 2030.

What is Hajj?

Hajj , the Arabic word for pilgrimage, is one of the five pillars of Islam and a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for every Muslim, if they are able.

Millions of faithful make the pilgrimage to holiest sites of Islam in the cities of Makkah and Madinah, beginning on the eighth day of Dhu Al Hijja, the last month of the Islamic calendar .

What is special about Hajj?

Hajj is the most revered spiritual experience for devout Muslims — considered a chance to start afresh and celebrate the spirit of unity in Islam. Pilgrims are all required to perform the same rituals taught by the Prophet Mohammed, to remind them that they are all equal before God.

When does Hajj begin this year? How long does it take?

This year, Hajj is expected to begin on July 26. The pilgrimage takes three days, but most pilgrims extend their stay by a week to pray in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.

What are the Covid-19 rules performing Hajj this year?

Authorities have set out health requirements that Hajj pilgrims from outside the kingdom have to meet before landing in the country.

Pilgrims who wish to perform Hajj must be vaccinated against Covid-19.

The vaccination deadline is 10 days before the Hajj season begins, according to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, who said that pilgrims must have all three doses of a Covid-19 vaccine for them to obtain the Hajj permit.

The ministry also said vaccinations against seasonal flu and meningococcal meningitis must be taken and for those coming from outside Saudi Arabia vaccinations against yellow fever and polio are mandatory.

What do pilgrims wear during Hajj?

During Hajj, as with Umrah, men wear two sheets of plain white cloth, to cover the upper and lower body. Women must wear modest clothes that cover their bodies to the ankle and scarves to cover their hair. The clothes are usually white, although there is no restriction on colour.

What happens during Hajj?

On the first day, Muslims perform Umrah, which includes Tawaf and Sa'i. The first involves circumambulating the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, built by the Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail, at the Grand Mosque in Makkah. During Sa'i, pilgrims walk seven times between two hills, called Safa and Marwa, in the mosque complex.

After Umrah, Muslims travel to Mina, a holy site south-east of Makkah, by shuttle and camp there in tents overnight. Mina, also known as the city of tents, can host up to three million people.

On the second day, pilgrims travel to Mount Arafat, five kilometres from Makkah, where the Prophet Mohammed is believed to have delivered his last sermon.

What is Hajj and why do Muslims go around the Kaaba?

What is Hajj and why do Muslims go around the Kaaba?

Pilgrims spend the day praying at Arafat until sunset, then walk the seven kilometres to the third holy site, Muzdalifah. There, they perform the sunset and night prayers and spend the night worshipping under the open sky.

On the third morning, the pilgrims gather pebbles and return to Mina for the stoning ceremony. They throw seven pebbles each at Jamrat Al Aqabah, a stone monument that signifies the temptations of Satan, between sunrise and sunset.

The pilgrims’ three concluding acts include sacrificing an animal to feed people in need, which can be done by purchasing a voucher, and cutting or shaving their hair, then returning to Makkah for another Umrah. Most women cut a few strands of hair while men prefer to shave it all off.

Will Hajj be open to international pilgrims?

The ministry opened registration for Hajj 2023 in February for international pilgrims and to give those who had performed Hajj more than five years ago another chance to apply for a permit.

Most pilgrims arrive at the airport in Jeddah, which is the major city closest to Makkah.

What are the Hajj packages available this year?

The Hajj and Umrah ministry has announced three Hajj packages.

Packages start from SAR 3,984 ($1,060) and can be paid in three instalments for domestic pilgrims.

What are the health rules at the holy sites?

Authorities have outlined procedures that must be followed at entry points within and before entering the country. These include verification of all health documents, including vaccination certificates, and screening in person.

Pilgrims will be divided into groups for transport to holy sites.

Saudi health authorities said they will continue to assess and update the precautions as needed.

What is the 'Smart Pilgrim' app? How does it work?

The Ministry of Hajj has introduced smart technology to assist in carrying out Hajj rituals.

“A pilgrim can download the Smart Pilgrim app, which has many services, to his or her smartphone and chat with their Hajj service provider to report any violation or file a complaint,” said Hisham Saeed, assistant undersecretary of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

He said there will be an expansion in the coming weeks in smart services, including three new apps to better serve pilgrims.

The purpose of the Smart Pilgrim app is to resolve any complaints or issues in a timely manner.

“The Hajj and Umrah Ministry has a call centre that receives the pilgrims’ inquiries, complaints, and suggestions round the clock. In addition, a pilgrim can download the smart pilgrim app, which has many services, to his or her smartphone and chat with their Hajj service provider,” he said.

The forum, held annually, gathers specialists, scientists and stakeholders working in the Hajj and Umrah ecosystem to discuss "scientific issues, solutions and technology advancements" that can enhance Hajj services and operations.

Muslim people praying around the Kaaba in Mecca.

The Hajj is the most ritualistic obligation in Islam and one of the largest Muslim pilgrimages in the world. It takes place once a year across several sacred sites in and around the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia—the birthplace of Islam.

The Hajj involves performing a series of rituals set out by the Prophet Muhammad that link the pilgrimage to Adam and Hawa (biblical Eve), the prophets Ibrahim (biblical Abraham) and Ishmael, and the Day of Judgement.

Most Muslims consider the Hajj to be one of the five pillars of Islam alongside the declaration of faith ( shahadah ); observing daily prayer ( salah ); fasting during the month of Ramadan ( sawm ) and giving to charity ( zakat ). As a result, they believe every Muslim who has the means is obligated to perform the Hajj before they die. If someone is sick or otherwise unwell, a person may appoint another to perform the hajj by proxy.

When Is the Hajj in 2023?

The Hajj is performed every year between the 8 th -13 th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Muslim calendar. In 2023 the start of the Hajj falls on June 26 and numbers attending are expected to return to pre-pandemic averages of around 2.5 million pilgrims.

The Story of the Hajj

The Hajj rituals were formalized by the Prophet Muhammad when he performed his one and only pilgrimage in the year A.D. 628. Many of the key rituals are centered on stories about God testing the prophet Ibrahim.

The first example is when Ibrahim is ordered to abandon his wife, Hajirah (biblical Hagar), and their baby son Ishmael—later, a prophet in his own right—in the desert near the ruins of the Kaaba (the stone building near the center of the Great Mosque in Mecca) .

When mother and child run out of provisions, Hajirah puts down her baby and runs up and down two hills called Safa and Marwa looking for help. Defeated, she cries out to God and returns to her baby who is scratching away at the sand with his feet. When Hajirah lifts up Ishmael, she sees freshwater bubbling up from beneath him and immediately begins forming a well around this, thus saving both mother and child. Hajirah’s frantic search is re-enacted by pilgrims in the ritual called saiy, and throughout the Hajj, pilgrims drink water from the well of Zamzam , believed to be fed by the same spring Ishmael dug with his feet.

The second example is when God tests Ibrahim’s faith by commanding him to sacrifice his son. Muslims believe that on his way to do this, Iblis ( Satan ) tries to dissuade Ibrahim. The spots where these "temptations" took place are now marked by three immense pillars in the desert outside of Mecca called Jamarat. One of the key Hajj rituals involves throwing stones at these pillars in a literal re-enactment of what Ibrahim did to cast Iblis aside, and in a symbolic rejection of one’s own temptations. Having rejected Iblis, when Ibrahim attempts to kill his son as he has been commanded to do, God replaces him with a ram to sacrifice instead. This act is also commemorated by pilgrims and Muslims around the globe on the 10 th of Dhu al-Hijjah when they sacrifice an animal to mark the start of the Eid al-Adha .

There is one other way the Hajj connects pilgrims to Ibrahim and this is at the Maqam Ibrahim or "Station of Ibrahim"—believed to be the platform he used to rebuild the Kaaba with Ishmael more than 4,000 years ago. Pilgrims try to pray behind this after performing tawaf (circling the Kaaba seven times).

However, the most important rite of the Hajj acknowledges the entire story of humanity at the plain of Arafat, also in the desert outside Mecca, where pilgrims must stand on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah. This is where Muslims believe God forgave Adam and Hawa; it is where the Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon to complete the faith of Islam, and where the Last Judgement is believed to take place in the future.

Hajj Rituals

Hajj can be performed in at least three ways; Hajj Qiraan, Thamattu and Ifraad . The most popular is Hajj Thamattu, in which pilgrims perform the "lesser Hajj," the Umrah , alongside the Hajj proper. Hajj Qiraan is the same but pilgrims perform both in one go. Hajj Ifraad sees pilgrims only perform the Hajj, and there is no obligation to sacrifice an animal.

To perform Hajj Thamattu Muslims first enter ihram (a state of purity) at one of the designated stations outside of Mecca; ihram is best symbolized by the two simple unstitched white sheets worn by men, resembling Muslim funerary shrouds.

The pilgrim then heads to the Kaaba to perform tawaf , starting and ending at the Black Stone. They then try and pray behind the Maqam Ibrahim before performing saiy , by walking and running seven times between the sacred hills, Safa and Marwah. After this the pilgrim come out of ihram by shaving or trimming their hair.

The pilgrim again assumes ihram ahead of the 8 th of Dhu al-Hijjah when they head to Mina, a large tent city in the desert outside Mecca to spend the day in worship, contemplation and prayer. The next day at dawn, they make for the plains of Arafat where they spend as much time as possible in prayer before sunset; this is the most important act of the Hajj. Every other rite can be missed for valid reasons (though a compensation must be paid), but not this one. Once the sun sets, pilgrims head to another site in the desert, Muzdalifah, to spend the night under the stars, praying and collecting the small stones they will use the following day.

At sunrise on the 10 th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the first day of Eid al Adha, all pilgrims make their way to one of the three Jamarat pillars called the Jamarat al-Aqabato and throw seven stones at it. After this each pilgrim arranges for an animal (cow, goat, sheep or camel) to be sacrificed on their behalf ( hady ) and the meat distributed to the needy before shaving or cutting their hair to exit ihram. The pilgrim then returns to Mecca to perform another tawaf; another prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim and another saiy .

Some Shi’a Muslims perform tawaf one more time at this point. All pilgrims then return to Mina for the next two or three days to stone all three pillars seven times each day and perform further acts of worship. After leaving Mina for Mecca, they perform one more tawaf , known as the farewell tawaf (if they didn’t do so earlier) to conclude their Hajj journey.

If properly conducted, the entire pilgrimage is believed to wipe out sins for true believers.

Introduction

Once in a lifetime, every adult Muslim with the physical and financial ability should make a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, which is known as Hajj. Hajj is a commemoration of the life and trials as well as the dedication, submission, and sacrifices of the Prophet Abraham and his family. It is a large communal event, as over two million Muslims of diverse backgrounds gather to perform the same rituals over a period of five days in and around Mecca. The Ka’bah, located in Mecca, is the focal point of the Hajj, as well as the direction towards which Muslims pray throughout the year. Muslims believe it was built by the Prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael, who consecrated it as the first house of worship of God. The pilgrimage to Mecca includes young and old, men and women from different races, ethnicities and backgrounds taking part in one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, with 2-3 million people coming from every corner of the globe.

The Purpose of Hajj

As the fifth pillar of Islam, Muslims are obligated to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime if it is financially and physically possible for them to do so. The ultimate goal of Hajj is the forgiveness of sin. The pilgrim journeys as a humble penitent, wearing only two simple, white pieces of cloth, seeking approach to God’s grace. The Prophet Muhammad said that a person who performs Hajj properly “will return as a newly born baby (free of all sins).”

The pilgrimage’s great gathering of Muslims representing every nationality in the world, wearing the same simple white garment, demonstrates and symbolizes the remarkable diversity and unity of Muslims, and is a reminder that all human beings are equal before God.

Hajj also reenacts and commemorates the story and struggles of Abraham and his family. Muslims believe that Abraham built the first house of worship to the One God, the Ka’bah, which is at the center of the pilgrimage as well as the direction of daily prayers. The pilgrimage commemorates Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command who was then replaced by a lamb. This is the meaning behind the tradition of sacrificing a lamb at the conclusion of the pilgrimage; the meat is distributed to those in need. Abraham’s wife Hagar’s desperate search for water for her son Ishmael is commemorated during one of the obligatory rituals of Hajj called Sa’i , during which pilgrims walk in her footsteps between the small hills of Safa and Marwa.

The Timing of Hajj

Hajj takes place over the course of five days during the 12th month of the lunar Islamic calendar called Dhul-Hijjah. However, pilgrims usually arrive one to two weeks before Hajj actually starts, and stay a week afterwards in order to visit the mosque of Prophet Muhammad in Medina.

To view the dates of Hajj this year, visit our  Calendar of Important Islamic Dates . Note that because the beginning of Islamic lunar months depends on the actual sighting of the new moon, the start date for the beginning of Hajj may vary by one day.

Leaving for Hajj  – Performing Hajj is viewed as a great honor in the eyes of Muslims. Therefore, Muslims who intend to make Hajj are often seen off with much fanfare at the airport by relatives, friends, and members of the local mosque. Upon their return, family and friends as well as some mosques organize celebratory dinners, during which pilgrims recount their journey and experiences.

Ihram  – Refers to the state of ritual consecration that the pilgrims enter when they remove their worldly clothes and don the pilgrim’s garb of two seamless, white sheets. Women pilgrims do not wear the white sheets, but can wear any simple modest clothes. Pilgrims put on the  Ihram  before entering Mecca, at which time pilgrims begin the chant, “Here I am at your service. O God, here I am.” The white garments of  Ihram  symbolize the equality and fellowship of all Muslims. While in  Ihram , pilgrims should not harm any living thing, cut their hair or nails, wear perfume or have intimate relations with their spouses.

Performing Hajj

1st Day  – 8th day of Dhul-Hijjah: Pilgrims leave Mecca and camp at nearby Mina.

2nd Day  – 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah: The Day of Arafat is the real climax of the Hajj, when pilgrims move at sunrise from Mina to the plain of Arafat where they spend the entire day in earnest supplication, devotion, and seeking God’s forgiveness. At sunset, the pilgrims move to Muzdalifa, which is a site between Mina and Arafat, where they camp for the night. It is highly recommended for Muslims around the world to fast on the day of Arafat in spiritual union with the pilgrims who are standing on the plain of Arafat seeking God’s forgiveness.

3rd Day  – 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah: The pilgrims return to Mina where they may spend up to three days in devotion and prayer. They also perform a ritual known as  Ramy al-Jamarat , throwing stones at three pillars. This ritual represents the trials experienced by Abraham when he was ordered by God to sacrifice his son and Satan tempted him to disobey God. Stoning the three pillars with seven stones each symbolizes rejecting Satan’s temptations. Then the pilgrims sacrifice a lamb in reenactment of the story of Abraham who slaughtered a lamb after he was prepared to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. In recent years, lambs are slaughtered by the government and the meat is distributed to poor Muslim countries. After the stay in Mina, the pilgrims return to Mecca to end the formal rituals of Hajj by making Tawaf  and Sa’i . (see below for definitions)

Returning from Hajj  – Most accounts of Hajj from pilgrims returning from Hajj speak of the great spiritual inspiration, awe at the incredible diversity of Muslims, and the physical hardships of the journey, which have been immensely reduced in modern times with pilgrims staying in nice hotels before and after Hajj.

Eid ul-Adha

Eid ul-Adha (Festival of the Sacrifice) is a major religious holiday for Muslims, which occurs on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah. The Eid celebration begins with a special prayer in the morning, followed by a sermon. The theme of the Eid is Abraham’s example of unconditional surrender to God. Afterwards or on the following weekend, families or communities hold celebrations with food, games, and gifts for children.

It is recommended to sacrifice a lamb on Eid as a reenactment of Abraham’s story after he was ready to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, but who was miraculously replaced by a lamb. The meat of the sacrifice is divided up between one’s family, friends, neighbors, and the poor. In most instances today, the actual sacrifice is done by a trained butcher, although Muslims often assist in the sacrifice.

Key Terms Related to Hajj

Ka’bah  – The cubical building that Muslims believe was constructed by Abraham and Ishmael (Isma’il), which is described in the Qur’an as the first house of worship dedicated to God. Ka’bah means cube in Arabic. Although the Ka’bah is the place of pilgrimage, it is not an object of worship. The Ka’bah is covered by an elaborate black covering with gold lettering. The precincts of the Ka’bah are a sanctuary where no living creature should be harmed.

Black Stone  – Resting at the corner of the Ka’bah, the Black Stone was one of the original stones of the structure built by Abraham, and is said to have descended to earth from paradise. The Black Stone is not an object of worship.

Tawaf  – Refers to circling the Ka’bah. Upon arriving at the Ka’bah, the pilgrim circles the Ka’bah seven times in a counter clockwise direction.

Sa’i  – Refers to walking swiftly between the small hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, re-enacting Hagar’s desperate search for water for her young son Ishmael.

2024 Hajj: Saudi Arabia reveals last date of registration; Details here

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has set out the deadline for Hajj 2024 registration.

According to the Gulf News, Saudi Arabia has issued the final date for the upcoming Islamic Hajj pilgrimage.

The Kingdom announced that the registration process for this year’s Islamic Hajj pilgrimage will run until the 7th of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul Hajjah, which corresponds to June 13, 2024.

According to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah of Saudi Arabia, this registration is available to first-time pilgrims subject to available places.

In February 2024, Saudi Arabia opened the e-registration process for its citizens and Muslim expatriates who wish to perform the Hajj pilgrimage due this year in June. Meanwhile, the kingdom reportedly started issuing Hajj permits for domestic pilgrims on Wednesday.

Eligible pilgrims and Hajj workers are also required to get vaccinations. These include one dose of the updated vaccine against COVID-19 (for people aged above 18 years), an anti-seasonal influenza vaccine, as well as an inoculation against meningitis.

The Ministry of Hajj has also launched four pilgrimage packages. Their prices range from SR4,099 to SR13,265 depending on the accommodation level. The ministry also confirmed that pilgrims can pay the prices of these packages in three installments.

In the first installment, 20 percent of the overall cost was asked to be paid until the first day of the holy month of Ramadan which started on March 11, 2024. The second installment asked for the payment of 40 percent and the deadline was set on the 20th of Ramadan, which corresponded to March 31, 2024. The third and final installment has to be paid by the 20th of the Islamic month of Shawwal, which corresponds to April 29, 2024.

Hajj is an obligatory Islamic duty that must be carried out by Muslims who can afford it physically and financially at least once in a lifetime.

Last year, some 1.8 million pilgrims from around the world performed the Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj, marking the return to pre-pandemic levels.

about

I was a lone goer and it was my first time to perform Umrah, that’s why I was really confused and nervous about what to do and how to do. I was concerned about how I would travel from Jeddah airport to Makkah, how I will find my hotel in both holy cities, or will I receive guidance during Ziyarat. But to my surprise, all my worries immediately vanished when a representative of AlHaram Travel was at the airport to meet and assist me in my holy journey ahead. He greeted me with open arms, dropped me right in front of my hotel in Makkah and took me to do Ziyarat in both Makkah and Madinah. Other than that, whenever I required assistance in any other on-trip circumstances, the travel agents of AlHaram were friendly and always stood by my side to guide me at every step.

I subscribed to their newsletter, next day I got an e-mail that included last-minute offers, seasonal specials, exclusive perks & discounted Umrah deals. Fortunately, in the very next mail, I received an irresistible offer that had a flight departing from my nearest airport, perfect for my strict budget limit, included hotel I had my eyes on, and even ground transportation was of my standards. I booked it without a second thought as me and my mother were looking to travel and this deal helped us fulfil our desire to perform Umrah. Great prices and excellent service.

I've used AlHaram Travel in the past and found their services to be reliable and professional. They saved me as I was having a lot of financial crisis and could not pay lump sum amount. They resolved my worries by suggesting me to pay amount in equal installments and offer me an easy to follow installment plan that did not prove to be a burden on my pocket and helped me fulfil my hearty desire to perform Umrah. They didn’t even charge me a single penny above the original package price.

Last month, my family event got cancelled at very last moment, so we planned to go for Umrah but knew that it was very late and booking Umrah trip in last moments was very difficult. But my colleague suggested me to contact AlHaram Travel and I was really impressed with their exceptional services. Their team was dedicated to cater my needs even at such short notice and brought a perfect last minute deal that has everything included I required for me and my family during an Umrah journey. Thank you for such an outstanding service.

Traveled with AlHaram Travel in three different months and diverse requirements. And I am delighted to say that their services were stellar & professional every time. They always have plenty of packages pre designed for every month and after listening my needs, they provided me the best package that had all the things I preferred to receive and perform Umrah with a peaceful mind.

Super impressed by the customer service I received from the team of AlHaram Travel and its team. They went an extra mile to understand my travel requirements and suggested me the nearest airport to fly from, assisted me to find hotel that had all amenities I needed to make my Umrah journey comfortable, provided on-trip support and arranged inter-city transport for hassle-free traveling. Really thankful for their cooperation at every step.

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
