The groundbreaking artist talks creating joy during lockdown, her love of disco and her upcoming tour

Whilst many of us spent our lockdowns picking up new skills such as learning to knit, or keeping up our Duolingo streaks, LGBTQI icon Heather Peace was working on her fifth album titled This Love. This was a new learning experience for the groundbreaking artist, as our “new normal” meant she had to take on the role of producing the album from her attic. The album became a form of escapism from the stress of life in the pandemic, inspired by afternoon dances that she shared with her wife and children. Inspired by retro disco, This Love serves up some much needed queer joy. Here’s what Heather had to say about the experience. 

DIVA: How would you describe this album in three words?

Heather: Positive. Upbeat. Joyous. 

How are you feeling in the lead up to the release of This Love?

It’s been quite a whirlwind really as it was only meant to be an EP, so 5 tracks and then my old manager came back on board after having brought up her own daughter and said, “Do you want it to be an album?” 

I’m excited because it is very very very different for me. I’ve always written songs on the piano, guitar or gone into the studio with the band and created that way, so they’ve always had a lot more artistic input. This is the first album I’ve completely produced on my own. It’s all been done upstairs which is really odd, probably a real positive to come out of the pandemic because I just had to learn a lot of stuff and find new ways of doing things.

Do you think this experience has made you eager to fully produce other projects in the future?

I think so. The one thing I have is time, I say I have time, what I mean by that is, I see with music, mainstreamed and everything else, like all craziness, constantly trying to find a way of making things viable. As much as I adore going into huge studios, they’re a massive expense. And so it does make it a lot easier for me to produce more music by being able to just go to my top floor in the evening and carry on writing and producing it and ultimately, I love it. So I’d be doing it if nobody was listening to it. 

I know that the album portrays aspects of married life and parenthood. Have you let your wife and kids listen to it? What do they think of This Love? 

The kids come upstairs all the time and have a dance around. They love it. And Ellie has been involved throughout the process. I play her songs as soon as they’re written before I’ve started adding anything to it. So they’re usually in their rawest forms. They’ve been part of the process all the way along. And a lot of the themes that are explored are about long term relationships, marriage if you like. Which is why the last track I wrote was called This Love. It felt like it was a good title that sort of encompassed the whole album. 

I know that you nod to retro disco within the album. What inspired this?

I was, as we all were, getting a bit unhealthier during the pandemic, whether it was because we ate the wrong food or drank too much wine or didn’t move around enough. So I really wanted to kickstart my health again. I’ve always been a big Kylie [Minogue] fan. I think she’s ace. I didn’t know she had a new album out and she had this disco album out. I loved the way it made me feel in the air pods on my runs. It felt really motivational because it was super upbeat and fun and brilliantly produced. So that was what got me going.

I’ve only got a few really upbeat numbers. And I always look forward to those points in the show. And I thought “Well, why don’t I just write a whole album of upbeat stuff?”

And now that we’re allowed back outside, how do you feel about taking it on tour?

I’m really excited. I mean, I’ve got six dates at the end of April and the beginning of May. And the dates that should have been done in 2020. It’s about time. I’m nervous, but excited. I know that it’s going to be a really fun album to play live. And it’s going to be one heck of a party. I know a lot of people who come to my gigs. I know their faces. I know their names. And I haven’t seen them for years. It’s gonna feel great.

Just spotted that Heather is performing soon down my neck of the woods (South Wales).

I like many watched Lip Service. Naturally the character Sam caught my eye (uniforms lol). I also recall admiring her during the retro London’s Burning days!

I did not know but came to realise that she’s a fabulous musician. Her voice is one that makes me feel emotional every time lol! It moves me!

Always nice to enjoy a tiny bit of eye candy with a genuinely warm person who has always gone the extra mile for her fans!

Can’t wait to see her perform again in Cardiff!

Personal circumstances dictate I may not be able to go on the 9th May but intend to buy tickets and hope for the best!

What a great night at The Brook Southampton and brilliant end to another amazing tour.

Singer, song writer and Actor, is there nothing she can't do.

Beautiful music by a beautiful person.

If you get the chance to go to one of Heather's gigs, Do it!!! You won't be sorry.

We were very disappointed. The sound quality wasn't particularly good and the song choices were not very upbeat for a pre-pride celebration especially after Lucy got the audience engaged and involved. Heather didn't seem to engage as much as normal and lost some of her sparkle.

Heather Peace, who plays Eve Unwin in EastEnders, has quickly become a fan favourite since she joined in October 2021. The 48-year-old actress plaus Eve, a character recently released from prison.

It was revealed that Eve and Stacey Slater (played by Lacey Turner) had a sham marriage to secure their probation release. Since then, they've moved back to Walford and remained close friends.

Eve's love life has been complicated, with her developing feelings for Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal), despite Suki being married to the villainous Nish (Navin Chowdhry). Thankfully, they are safely together now.

However, Heather's real life is far removed from her on-screen character's drama-filled existence.

Heather, originally from Bradford, studied acting at Manchester Metropolitan University. She made her TV debut in 1997, appearing in an episode of The Bill as Josie Clarke and later in Emmerdale as Anne Cullen.

Her big break came in 1998 when she was cast as Sally Fields in the popular ITV drama London's Burning, which follows the lives of firefighters from the fictional Blackwall fire station.

Heather stayed until the last episode in August 2002. After that, Heather had some smaller parts on other TV shows like Casualty, Down to Earth and Where the Heart Is.

She also once played a mountain rescuer on ' Coronation Street ' in 2008.

In 2005, she was in Ultimate Force with Ross Kemp. Heather is also known for her roles as Sam Murray in Lip Service and Nikki Boston in Waterloo Road.

Discussing her EastEnders casting, Heather said at the time: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining the cast of Eastenders and I love my character Eve. She's tough, but fair; super bright and cheeky. I'm loving working with such a brilliant cast, in particular Lacey Turner."

Acting isn't her only skill - Heather can play the piano and guitar and even held a jazz residency while studying acting. She's been releasing music since her character sang Bette Midler's The Rose in London's Burning and now has five albums and four singles to her name.

She previously set out on her This Love Tour with shows in major cities including London, Birmingham, Brighton, and Manchester. Her love of music began when she was a cantor at St Joseph's Catholic Church alongside her mother, but the two have since left the church because she is openly a lesbian.

According to The Daily Record, she said: "The problem comes with the Catholic Church saying, 'We're going to be forced to marry gay people in our church. That's embarrassing. I was brought up a Catholic, and in all honesty, on the happiest day of my life, if you really think I would set foot in any building that would rather I wasn't there, then you're having a laugh.

"Why would I want to sit with a priest when I don't even believe any of that? I hate the fact that it's even referred to as 'gay' marriage. I don't drive a 'gay' car or eat a 'gay' lunch. It's just marriage. It's all about achieving a sense of equality.

Heather has been married to Ellie Dickinson since 2013 and the couple has three children: Annie Mary and twins Jessie and Lola. She frequently shares snaps of her idyllic family life with her 69k followers on Instagram.

Heather Peace Australian Tour Announced

Heather Peace will tour Australia to promote her album and perform at Mardi Gras

After huge demand from fans, British musician and Lip Service actress Heather Peace has announced that she will perform at the world-famous Sydney Mardi Gras before setting off on her debut Australian tour from 10 th – 24 th February 2013.

Heather, who plays the popular DS Sam Murray in the lesbian drama series Lip Service , has just enjoyed the most successful 18 months of her music career. In May, she released her debut album, Fairytales, and watched it shoot straight into the number 7 position on the UK’s Independent Album Charts as she travelled around the UK on a sell-out tour.

She was also named as G3 Magazine’s Lesbian Icon Of The Year , placed number 7 on the Independent On Sunday’s prestigious Pink List and number 8 on Tatler Magazine’s, ‘The People Who Matter’ list.

Says Heather Peace : “It’s been a dream of mine to perform at Sydney Mardi Gras and I’ve also had so many requests on social media from Australian fans for me to come over and play. Now I’m just giddy with excitement that it is actually happening. I can’t wait to share the Fairytales album with a new audience and I’m also honoured to share the Women Say Something stage with so many other fantastic women at Mardi Gras. See you in 2013!”
