How to hide the tab bar on safari for ipad (or show it).

Tired of seeing the tabs bar on Safari for iPad? If you're looking for a sleeker screen layout, here's how to turn it off.

By default, Safari for iPad shows a toolbar full of browser tabs when you have more than one tab open at a time. If you'd rather simplify the look of your screen, there's a way to hide your open tabs. Here's how to hide the tab bar---or how to get it back.

First, open Settings on your iPad by tapping the grey "gear" icon.

In Settings, scroll down through the sidebar and tap "Safari."

In Safari settings, swipe upward until you locate the "Tabs" section. Tap the switch beside "Show Tab Bar" to turn it off.

If you previously turned off the tab bar and want it back, tap the "Show Tab Bar" switch instead to turn it back on here.

After that, launch Safari. You'll notice that the tab toolbar is now hidden. (Or, if you've re-enabled it, it will appear once again.)

With the tab bar disabled, you can easily switch between open tabs by tapping the "tabs" button (which looks like two overlapping squares) in the toolbar. It works just like it does on iPhone.

If you change your mind and want to see the tab bar again, just revisit Settings > Safari and switch "Show Tab Bar" back on. Happy browsing!

How to Hide the Toolbar in Safari for iOS

ios7 safari icon

The Website View menu includes one-tap settings that let you change text size options , request the desktop version of a website , and more. Here we're going to check out the new Hide Toolbar option.

In earlier versions of iOS, Safari hides the top and bottom toolbars when scrolling down a web page, and to view them again you have to tap the URL or swipe down on the page.

In iOS 13 though, you can get Safari to hide the toolbar completely when navigating a website, which makes for a less disruptive experience.

Simply select Hide Toolbar from the dropdown menu, and the toolbar will shrink to show just the URL. This more slimline arrangement will remain while you navigate the website, but you can re-instate the toolbar anytime by tapping the mini URL bar at the top of the screen.

How to Show or Hide the Tab Bar on an iPad

When you browse on a mobile device like your iPhone or iPad, it’s possible for you to have multiple tabs open at once. Typically you may be used to touching the Tabs button and navigating between those tabs from that menu, but your iPad can actually show a tab bar at the top of the window that you can use to navigate as well.

This tab bar consists of small gray rectangles below the address bar that identify each of the open tabs. By pressing one of those rectangles you can switch to that tab. But if you aren’t seeing that tab bar, or if you would like to remove it so that you can see more of your Web pages on the screen, then our guide below will show you how to make that change.

How to Hide the Safari Bar on an iPad

...

On an iPad, you can use both a menu and a bar to conveniently save bookmarks of your favored and frequently visited websites. But if using Safari's Bookmarks menu is sufficient and you'd like to maximize your iPad screen for website displays, you can hide your Bookmark Bar. The process of hiding the Safari bar is as straightforward as it gets.

Tap "Settings" in your home screen.

Video of the Day

Select "Safari" on the left pane.

Tap the "Always Show Bookmarks Bar" switch on the right to toggle it "Off."

Click the "Home" button below your display to return to your home screen.

Tap "Safari" to confirm your new setting. Your "Bookmarks Bar" should no longer appear at the top of your Safari screen.

In El Capitan (10.11), the menu item of interest is the first in the View menu: “Always Show Toolbar in Full Screen.”

Uncheck this menu item and the entire screen will be devoted to the web content until the arrow is brought to the top of the screen.

Using Full Screen Mode will maximize usable screen real estate. On Safari, click on the Green "traffic light" button.

Rysz, Thank you for your answer. However, in full screen mode the Address and URL bar are still visible. I had them set to only show when I put the pointer to the to of the screen. Now I wont "hide"

I believe that the only way to get any of the three browsers to behave the way you would like is via an extension.

Old Gnome, I am not computer literate enough to do extensions. I am thinking I will have to wait for the next OS soft wear upgrade and hope they have added the option.

Feeling defeated.😕

CT, I have already done that. All it hides it the Apple tool bar that has the File, Edit, History, ETC...

The address toolbar and the tabs bar still show.

Thanks for trying to help me.

For that to happen, you are not doing what I said. But, anyway, experiment with the Safari View menu to see what is possible.

When using safari on my iPhone, as I scroll down the web page the address bar auto hides itself. I then have to scroll up just to show the address bar again and it’s very annoying. I have been looking through the settings in safari and the phone in general and can’t find the option to always show the address bar. Where is the setting located?

There's no setting. You can tap anywhere in that bottom area and it will bring up the address bar so no need to scroll up.

I appreciate it, thank you.
