European Health Insurance Card

The reverse of the Austrian e-card shows the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

While it is generally recommended that you take out travel insurance prior to any trip abroad you may still avail yourself of the Austrian health system without travel insurance should you fall sick during your travels through Austria. EU citizens must fill in form sheet E 111 to make use of medical services in Austria.

Social insurance agreements have been signed with the following countries: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iceland, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Norway, Sweden, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey. Nationals of these countries may have a care/treatment voucher issued with their health insurance which is then exchanged for a health insurance certificate ( Krankenschein ) at a regional health fund in Austria.

For persons insured in Austria, the e-card makes travelling abroad easier. The reverse of the e-card shows the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC substitutes the international health insurance voucher (form E 111) for the claim of medical treatment during temporary visits (for example holiday) in member states of the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland.

What should I know when preparing for my trip to Austria?

Security : Austria is mostly a safe country but you should beware thieves operating in busy tourist neighborhoods and the U-Bahn metro trains. One must always remain vigilant and be careful with personal items. As in other busy cities around the world, it’s a good idea to avoid using mobile phones on public transport or on the street or brandishing valuables.

Public transport : Like many European countries, Austria has excellent public transport, with a high speed rail network. Vienna is served by its U-Bahn metro system. In Vienna only, masks may remain compulsory on public transport as a precaution against COVID-19.

Opening hours : Shops are usually open Monday to Friday from 8 or 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but in smaller towns and villages, shops may close for 1 to 3 hours at midday. They usually open from 8 or 9 a.m. to midday or 1 p.m. Some open on Sundays but it is exceptional. Most of Vienna’s famous museums open from Tuesday to Sunday.

Driving license : Visitors from most countries can drive on Austrian roads for up to six months as long as they have a valid license from their country of residence.

Restaurants : The vast majority of cafés, bars and restaurants in Vienna are table service only, often even those that look like you should order at the bar. It can be considered rude to do otherwise. Most will open for lunch and dinner service.

Visa : Although many countries have visa-free travel with Austria and the Schengen Area, if you think you do need a visa to Austria you can find out more, here .

Who requires a Visa

Citizens of EU member states, European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland do not need a visa for entering the Republic of Austria.

Nationals of other countries might require a visa in order to enter the Schengen Area or the Austrian territory.

Please check the information on whether you require a visa or not on the  website of the Federal Ministry of the Interior .

Foreigners who are not nationals of an EEA state or Switzerland and who wish to pursue gainful employment or a short-term activity similar to gainful employment (e.g. internship) always require a visa (see also “Temporary work visa”).

Nationals of those states for which the visa requirement has been lifted by means of an EU regulation are entitled to visa-free entry to Austria for a maximum of 90 days per 180 days in case of no gainful employment.

Visa Categories

Visa c (short-stay visa).

The Schengen visa C is intended for touristic, business or visiting purposes (without gainful employment) for a maximum stay of 90 days per 180 days.

If a stay of more than 90 days is planned, you should apply for a visa D, which entitles the holder to stay in Austria up to six months.

Each application for a visa is subject to a case-by-case examination by the competent Consulate.

Holders of a Schengen visa are in principle entitled to enter and stay in the Schengen States presumed that the requirements of Art. 6 Schengen Borders Code are fulfilled and the visa is not subject to territorial restrictions.

The Schengen States are:

  • Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the non-EU members Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

There are special provisions for family members of EEA citizens and Swiss citizens entitled to freedom of movement. Please find the respective information under the following  link .

Visa A (airport transit visa)

In principle, foreigners who do not leave the international transit zone of an airport during a stopover, a flight segment or international flights do not require a visa.

However, nationals of the countries listed in the following require a visa (category “A”) also to stay in the international transit zone of an Austrian airport unless they are covered by an exemption:

  • Afghanistan, Bangladesch, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria

Further information on visa requirements and exemptions can be found on the  website of the Federal Ministry of the Interior .

D visa (national visa)

Visa D are subject to Austrian national legislation entitling holders to stays of 91 days to 6 months in Austria and can be issued for one or more entries.

Please note that an extension of a D visa in Austria is not possible. In the case of an intended stay in Austria for more than 6 months, a  residence permit   must be applied for.

The issuance of a visa D depends on the information provided by the applicant and thus on whether the intended stay in Austria for more than 90 days seems to be sufficiently documented. In exceptional cases, it is also possible to issue a visa D with a validity up to 12 months (for example on the basis of an international agreement).

A visa D issued by Austria or another Schengen State entitles the holder,to move freely in the territory of the other Schengen States for up to 90 days per 180 days, given that the holder does not plan to take up employment, is in possession of a valid travel document  fulfils the relevant conditions of the Schengen Borders Code ( Article 6 (1) (a), (c) and (e) of Regulation (EU) 2016/399 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 2016 establishing a Community Code on the rules governing the movement of persons across borders ) and is not on the national list of alerts of the Member State concerned.

Please note that rights acquired in one Schengen State on the basis of national regulations cannot automatically be transferred to another Schengen State. For example, study permits and work permits are in principle limited to the issuing Schengen State only.

Examples to apply for a Visa

Visa for long-term visiting trips.

For an intended stay in Austria longer than 90 days, but not exceeding 6 months, e.g. for family visits or course participation, it is possible to apply for a visa D. Corresponding documents to demonstrate the purpose of the stay must be submitted.

Visa for the collection of a residence permit

Persons granted a residence permit have to collect the residence card from the competent authority in Austria. If a visa is required, it is necessary to apply for a visa D for entry to collect the residence permit within three months of notification by the competent Consulate.

Job seeker visa

Highly qualified third-country nationals who wish to come to Austria to look for employment and subsequently possibly apply for a Red-White-Red Card for highly qualified persons can apply for a D visa to search for a job (“job seeker visa”). The visa D is issued for six months. Please note that holding this type of visa, employment is not permitted.

For further information on the job seeker visa and the Red-White-Red Card, please visit the   Federal Government’s official information website on migration to Austria .

Visa for participants in a ”Working Holiday Programme”

Please find more information about the Working Holiday Programmes under the following  link .

Visa for taking up temporary work

In order to take up temporary work for

  • merely temporary self-employment,
  • merely temporary dependent employment,
  • an activity as a seasonal worker as well as
  • an activity as a trainee, which requires official confirmation in accordance with § 3 (5) of the Act Governing the Employment of Foreign Nationals (Ausländerbeschäftigungsgesetz or AuslBG),

the issuance of a visa for gainful employment is required (§ 24 of the Aliens’ Police Act (Fremdenpolizeigesetz or FPG)).

A precondition for the issue of a visa for gainful employment is the fulfilment of the general visa requirements. In addition, in case of intended dependent employment, the required documents stipulated in the Act Governing the Employment of Foreign Nationals, and in case of intended self-employment, the relevant documents have be submitted.

Requirements for issuing a visa

The visa requirements for Schengen visa are laid down in the EU Visa Code, the provisions for visa D are laid down in the Aliens’ Police Act (FPG). The competent Consulate examines the visa applications if the conditions for issuing a visa are fulfilled. The competent Consulate decides on each application individually, taking into account all the circumstances of the individual case.

There is no legal entitlement to a visa.

A visa application is admissible if:

  • the visa application has been lodged at the competent Consulate,
  • the visa application has been lodged within a period of six months and not later than 15 calendar days before the intended start of the trip,
  • a correctly completed visa application form is presented,
  • a valid passport not older than 10 years, valid for three months after expiry of the visa and with two free pages, is presented,
  • an  ICAO -compliant passport photo is presented,
  • consent is given to the collection of fingerprints (unless already stored within the last 59 months), and
  •  the visa fee has been paid.

Once admissibility has been established, the Consulate examines the visa application and the following conditions for issuing a visa must be positively established for each individual visa applicant:

  • Plausibility and verifiability of the purpose of the trip to Austria,
  • Means of substance for living and travel expenses from own assets or income,
  • Willingness of the visa holder to leave the Schengen area before the visa expires,
  • Presentation of an adequate and valid travel medical insurance, covering the period of the intended stay, or, if a multiple-entry visa is applied for, the period of the first intended visit with a minimum coverage of € 30,000.

If it is not possible to prove financing by funds from one’s own assets, financial resources can be proven by an electronic declaration of sponsorship submitted by a person residing in Austria. Please visit the  website of the Federal Ministry of the Interior  for further information on the possibility of submitting a declaration of sponsorship.

Persons whose entry into Austria and the Schengen area would endanger security or public order or who do not fulfil one or more of the above-mentioned requirements, a visa will not be granted.

Applicants, whose visa application were refused, can file a legal remedy at the competent Consulate (“Vorstellung”) respectively submit an appeal to the Federal Administrative Court. Please read the information on the appeal procedure on the refusal form. For further information visit the  website of the Federal Administrative Court .

  • web: Federal Administrative Court bvwg.gv.at

Consular territorial competence

As a general rule, the Consulate of the Schengen State in which the sole or main destination is located is competent for examining and deciding on an application for a Schengen visa. In case no main destination can be identified as visits to different Schengen States are planned, the Consulate of the Schengen State through whose external borders the applicant intends to enter the territory of the Schengen State is the competent Consulate for issuing a Schengen visa.

Visa for travels to Austria have to be applied for at the competent   Austrian Consulate , which is placed in the country where the applicant legally resides.

In some countries, the Austrian Consulates also offer the possibility of submitting visa applications to an external service provider. For a service fee, the service provider receives applications and forwards them to the competent Austrian Consulate for examining and decision. An external service provider plays no role in the decision-making process itself!

If there is no Austrian Consulate in the applicant’s home country, a Schengen visa can also be applied for at a Schengen embassy representing Austria if one exists.

Where is a  Schengen representation  in place?

Please note that the representing Schengen embassies may not accept the “electronic declaration of sponsorship” submitted in Austria. The form in which a declaration of sponsorship is accepted by the representing Schengen embassies can be obtained from the competent Austrian Consulate or the representing Schengen embassy. Please note that if you apply to a Schengen embassy representing Austria, this embassy is exclusively responsible for the proceedings. An appeal against the decision also depends on the legal regulations of the respective representing Schengen State.

Visas D and visa for employment can only be applied for at the competent Austrian Consulate.

The use of so-called visa agencies, which demand large sums of money to obtain visas, is explicitly warned against because their services are often linked to dubious practices.

Since there are often cases of fraud in connection with Internet acquaintances, transferring money to unknown persons is explicitly warned against. Any claims that a large amount of money is required in order to obtain a visa are false.

In case of doubt, please contact the Consulate .

Applying for a visa

Table of content, general information.

Third‑country nationals subject to a passport requirement are generally subject to a visa requirement when entering Austria and throughout the duration of their stay. Exceptions may be agreed upon at EU level, for example by means of an Austrian federal law or an agreement between countries. Consult the → list of visa requirements on the website of the Federal Ministry of the Interior to check which third‑country nationals may enter the country without a visa.

More detailed information about the visa types can also be found at oesterreich.gv.at.

Requirements

General principles and requirements for the issue of visas:

  • visa application form
  • a travel document valid in Austria, with a validity period exceeding the duration of the visa by at least three months and with at least two empty pages, that was issued within the last ten years
  • a passport photo (portrait format, 35 x 45  mm ) in accordance with the specified passport photo criteria
  • presentation of an fully comprehensive travel health insurance policy for the planned duration of the stay (amount of cover: 30.000 Euro, valid for the entire Schengen area)
  • proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the duration of the intended stay and for the return journey to the country of origin or residence
  • other evidence requested by the relevant authorities (hotel reservations, invitations, booking confirmations, return flight ticket, proof of gainful employment etc. ) – as these are adapted to local standards and coordinated with other Schengen representations, the evidence to be provided may vary depending on location
  • absence of other grounds for refusal (residence prohibition, alert issued by a Schengen country)

Depending on the circumstances, additional documents may be requested. Please contact the Austrian representation (→ BMEIA ) in advance for more information.

Competent authority

Generally speaking, all visa types are issued by representation offices (→ BMEIA ) abroad or, in specific exceptional cases, by certain border control posts or, where extension of the visa is permitted, by the state police headquarters (Landespolizeidirektion).

Schengen visas must be issued by the representation office (→ BMEIA ) of the country in which the main travel destination of the visa applicant is located. If the applicant intends to spend an equal amount of time in several countries (for example, when touring), the competent representation office is that of the country in whose territory the main travel destination is located, on the basis of the length and purpose of the stay. If it is not possible to determine a main travel destination, the member country of first entry into the Schengen area is responsible for issuing the visa.

Territorial competence for applications for category A and C visas falls to the representation office in the consular district where the legal place of residence of the applicant is located. A representation office may claim exceptional competence for applications from third‑country nationals legally residing but not registered in their district if the applicant can provide justification as to why they had to submit their application to that particular consulate.

Type D visas, however, must be applied for at the competent Austrian representation. The provisions of Section 8 of the FPG apply to type D visas. In accordance with these provisions, the territorial competence for carrying out official actions in relation to visas is determined on the basis of the foreign national's the place of residence ( i.e. their centre of interest, verifiable by means of e.g. registration forms, residence permit, visa).

A list of all representation offices (addresses, telephone numbers, opening hours, special requirements for issuing visas etc. ) can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of European and International Affairs (→ BMEIA ) .

Costs and fees

The consular fees can be found on the list of fees provided by the relevant Austrian representation (→ BMEIA ) .

Overview: travel insurances

26.2.2012 Purchase & Order Finances & Insurance

Different types of insurances

Travel health insurance

A hospital stay abroad can be expensive. Unlike in Austria, if you have an accident or become sick during a stay in a foreign country, especially outside Europe, you have to bear at least some of the incurred costs yourself.

Within Europe

The e-card is valid within the European Union, the EEA states and Switzerland. For travels to non EU states like the Balkans or Turkey, a sick leave certificate can be used. Especially in the coastal areas of the Mediterranean, it can happen that only private ambulances and private hospitals are available that don't have a settlement with the social security of your home country. In this case, the same financial risk occurs as during journeys to countries that don't have an agreement with Austria.

Making a long-distance journey without a valid health insurance is risky: social security only refunds possible expenses based on Austrian tariffs. This can be expensive: A hospital stay in America can cost up to 700 euros per day (without treatment) - but you'll only get 170 euros refunded. In case of accidents or severe illness, the expenses you have to bear might become so high that they threaten your existence. A travel health insurance is supposed to close this gap as it bears occuring costs and handles organisational tasks for the patient.

Repatriation

The coverage of repatriation is an integral part of travel health insurances, which is particularly important in countries with poor healthcare. In case of emergency, an ambulance jet is used, otherwise the return transport passes (often without medical necessity) to the normal plane. Many insurance companies also cover the early transport of co-insured persons. Domestic sickness insurance companies don't pay for return transports.

Search and rescue costs

Costs for search and rescue are almost always covered by travel health insurances. If you spend your holidays in Austria, you should consider an additional insurance coverage for these costs - especially if you plan hiking and mountain tours!

Limitation of performances

If you suffer from a chronic disease or were in need of treatments before your departure, most travel health insurances usually only porivde their services to a limited extent. Pregnancy is often excluded as well and age limits are common.

Travel cancellation insurance

With this kind of insurance you avoid paying for a trip you're not making. If the trip is very expensive, if you booked far in advance and/or if many family members or friends travel with you, this insurance is a good investment: If you're unable to commence the trip, you have to pay anyways. The closer to the planned departure you cancel, the more expensive it gets - up to 80 percent of the price will be charged if you cancel on short notice. Cheap flight tickets often just expire without any refund.

If there are serious reasons which prevent you from commencing the trip, like severe illness or accidents in your family or serious damages to your house, a travel cancellation insurance bears the oncoming cancellation fees, either fully or except of 20 percent deductible.

The latter option is often included in the package price of tour operators - with an additional cancellation deductible insurance, you can also avoid these 20 percent. Note: If you're not concluding the cancellation insurance at the same time as you book the trip, it will only become effective after a period of two weeks.

Extended cancellation coverage

Modern insurance companies by now accept reasons for withdrawal or cancellation that weren't insurable until now, such as: unexpected termination or new employment relationship, submission of an action for divorce by the spouse of the insured person, failure to pass the final exam or class right before departure, sudden severe illness of dog, cat or horse.

Chronic diseases, already treated diseases or pregnancy are in most cases not accepted as a reason for cancellation.

Trip interruption

If you plan a long-distance and/or expensive trip, a holiday discontinuation insurance / trip interruption insurance is worth considering as such events are often not covered by a cancellation insurance. This type of insurance covers expenses that occur if you terminate your journey early for serious reasons. Unused services (like accommodations) will be refunded and additional costs for the early departure will be covered.

Baggage insurance

This insurance provides protection for (break-in) theft and robbery of your luggage. Insuried is the luggage in general, everything you wear on your body and in your pockets. There is no subsitute for things you forgot, lost or left somewhere. Cash, tickets or art objects are also uninsured.

Coverage level

When you conduct an insurance, make sure that the insurance coverage equals the value of the items in question. It is advisable to study the fine print carefully as insurance companies have very different conditions.

Check the following points:

  • Under what conditions and to what sums are jewelry, other valuables, camera, computer or sports equipment covered?
  • What is not covered?
  • Are items replaced at the reinstatement value (which is the exception) or at the present value? How is the value calculated?
  • What factors reduce the insurance benefit?

Theft and other disasters at destination

Compensation will be made for loss, destruction and damage (e.g. due to theft, accident, burglary or natural disasters). However, baggage insurances order you to pay attention to your luggage, jewelry, watches, documents and valuables, computer and photographic equipment. Usually, insurance companies require that your items are in your personal custody. The seizure by third parties without overcoming an obstacle should not be possible.

Delay of arrival

The actual damage will be compensated. Each airline interprets those damages in their own way though, and obviously all of them try to pull out of the affair at low costs. So if you are traveling to a wedding with elaborate clothing, want to leave for an adventure trip, cruise or mountain tour, necessary purchases can be costly if your luggage does not arrive on time. Having additional insurance may save you a lot of money here. This also applies when the luggage gets lost completely – the legal compensation is only up to 1,150 euros per piece of luggage.

Travel insurance

If you are rarely on vacation, the completion of a selective insurance is recommended. Are you traveling rather often and also spontaneously, you are probably better off with an annual travel insurance – you can conclude such insurances offered by your credit card provider and automobile association or with another insurance company. If you have a private health insurance, clarify in advance whether traveling abroad is insured.

The specialists

Specialized in travel insurance policies are the European Travel Insurance ( www.europaeische.at ) and Allianz Global Assistance (former Mondial Assistance). Check out their websites for further information.

Credit Card

The most common credit card issuers in Austria, MasterCard and Visa, offer annual travel insurance coverage. This is fully applicable (e.g. in the travel medical insurance) for the cardholder. For an extra fee, you can increase the coverage. The only condition for the maintenance of travel health insurance coverage is to use the card within the last two or three months before the incident. “Diners” also bounds the Overseas Health Insurance to the use of the card, additional services will be offered only if the trip was paid for with the card. This is also the condition of American Express for any insurance benefits.

Automobile associations

The safety passport and leisure safety pass of the ARBÖ or letter of protection of the ÖAMTC are valid for club members and their families, even if they are not using their own cars during their trip and regardless of whether they travel together or separately. Health insurance, repatriation and helicopter rescue are just some of the advantages included. ( www.arboe.at ; www.oeamtc.at ).

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Austria?

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory when travelling to Schengen countries, including Austria. If you're entering the Schengen Area from a non-Schengen country, you must show a valid passport and travel insurance that covers the duration of their stay and a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros. Being insured is one of the necessary steps to secure a visa and enter the Schengen Area, and failure to comply may result in a denial of entry.

However, regardless of whether or not it's legally required, it's always a good idea to take our health insurance before you travel — whether to Austria or anywhere else. For what's usually an affordable cost , taking out travel insurance will mitigate most or all of the risk of financial damage if you run into any unexpected troubles during your trip abroad. Take a look at the top five reasons to get travel insurance to learn more.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Austria

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Your selection "third countries | researcher | without residence title | stay for a max. of 6 months" resulted in the following information:

Visa c or visa d for gainful employment.

Researchers who want to stay in Austria for less than 6 months can apply for a Visa C for gainful employment (for stays of up to 90 days) or for a Visa D for gainful employment (for stays in Austria from 91 days up to a maximum of 6 months) at the competent Austrian representative authority in their country of residence. These visas are free of charge. Due to the planned taking up of employment a visa for gainful employment is required even in the case of a general right to enter without a visa. With a visa for gainful employment you may start your research work immediately after entry.

Conditions for the granting of a visa

Validity period, renewal and change to another residence title, family members, please note.

A Visa C for gainful employment permits you to enter all Schengen countries and to stay in those countries for a total period of up to 90 days within 180 days provided that you fulfil the general entry conditions.

A Visa D for gainful employment entitles you to enter and stay in Austria. It can be granted for a duration from 91 days up to 6 months. Holders of a Visa D enjoy freedom of movement to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within a time period of 180 days provided that they fulfil the general entry conditions.

You have to apply for the visa in person at the competent Austrian representative authority (embassy, consulate with power to issue visa) in your country of residence before travelling to Austria. The visa will then be issued by that authority.

In the checklist you will find a list of all documents that are required to apply.

If you are already staying in the Schengen area with a residence title of another Schengen country , you may only apply for an Austrian visa at the Austrian representative authorities in Bratislava, Ljubljana or Munich . You may apply for the visa at the competent representative authority at the earliest six months before your planned travel date. You should not apply later than 15 calendar days before your planned stay. Processing times may vary regionally or seasonally (e.g. due to keen demand). As an orientation we recommend that you apply for the visa at least four weeks before intending to enter Austria.

If your future employer is either a research institution owned to an extent of at least 50 percent by a public body or a certified research institution and this research institution submits a declaration of liability for the future employee the following simplified procedure applies for entry, residence within the territory of Austria and immediate commencement of work. By signing such a declaration of liability the host institution undertakes to bear all the costs incurred as a result of the researcher’s stay.

In this case the research institution has to contact the competent Austrian representative authority in the researcher’s country of residence and to submit the declaration of liability, the employment contract and the contact addresses of the researcher. It is also possible to submit the declaration of liability in electronic form free of charge ( Elektronische Verpflichtungserklärung – EVE ).

The researcher will then receive a prompt special appointment with the Austrian representative authority and submit an application for a visa for gainful employment (Visa C or Visa D). This visa is free of charge. If the simplified procedure is also to apply to family members, the declaration of liability must also include them.

In principle travel health insurance must be taken out to enter Austria with a visa (and for the whole duration of your stay unless you are going to have statutory health insurance). Please note that this insurance must be valid in Austria and provide sufficient cover for various health issues (insurance cover well over EUR 30,000, including guarantee to cover possible recovery and repatriation costs and costs for treatment of the COVID-19 disease).

Researchers who are employed by an Austrian research institution will be covered by the statutory Austrian health insurance associated with this employment – provided that their salary exceeds the limit of EUR 518.44/month [as of 2024] ("Geringfügigkeitsgrenze") (they will also have an accident and pension insurance).

see Conditions for the granting of a visa

If you have been granted a visa for gainful employment, you can start your research work without any further permits. Work that goes beyond the research activities that are not subject to the Act Governing Employment of Foreign Nationals is not permitted. You are only allowed to carry out research work in Austria.

In principle it is not possible to apply for a visa in Austria nor to have it renewed/extended. Once the visa expires you have to – unless you have been granted a residence title – leave the Schengen area. Under certain circumstances you may be entitled to apply for a residence title (e.g. for a " Settlement Permit – Researcher ") at the competent residence authority in Austria. Please note, however, that the application for a residence title does not permit you to overstay the period of residence defined in your visa.

Family members* can also apply for a Visa C or a Visa D, depending on the researcher's visa, at the competent Austrian representative authority (embassy, consulate with power to issue visa) in their country of residence . A charge applies to visas for family members. If family members are, on the basis of their nationality, entitled to enter Austria without requiring a visa, they are allowed to stay in Austria visa-free up to 3 months/90 days within 6 months/180 days (Japanese nationals up to 6 months).

Working in Austria is not permitted without a visa for gainful employment.

* Spouses, partners in a civil union and unmarried minors. Spouses and partners in a civil union must be at least 21 years old at the time of application.

You have to register within three working days of arrival in Austria with the registration office at your place of residence.

A registration with the registration office is not needed if you reside in a tourist accommodation (e.g., hotel, guest house, campsite, private room, AirBnB) for a maximum of 2 months.

Checklist Visa for Gainful Employment without Declaration of Liability

You have to enclose photocopies of the following documents with the personally signed application form additionally show the originals :

  • Valid travel document, which must be valid until at least three months after leaving the Schengen territory; the travel document must contain at least two empty pages and it must have been issued within the past ten years
  • Passport-sized photograph according to the ICAO criteria (colour photograph, size 3.5 x 4.5 cm)
  • Contract or preliminary contract with the employer in Austria (salary, planned duration, accommodation where required, etc.) to prove the necessary funds to finance your living costs
  • Upon request you should be able to prove the origin of the funds (possibly also by means of appropriate evidence).
  • Proof of accommodation (unless settled in the contract with the employer)
  • Proof of appropriate travel health insurance (insurance cover at least 30,000 Euro, including guarantee to cover possible recovery and repatriation costs and costs for treatment of the COVID-19 disease; the insurance must be valid in the whole Schengen area) for the planned duration of your stay in Austria or until the start of insurance in connexion with your employment (statutory insurance). Should you already have statutory insurance, you have to prove this when applying for the visa.
  • Flight, bus or train reservation
  • Proof of family ties and/or economic ties with the home country (e.g. proof of employment, proof of being a student there, spouse, children, etc.)

Checklist Visa for Gainful Employment with Declaration of Liability

The requirements for working in Austria are different.

If you are travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit.

If you’re a visitor, border guards will look at your entry and exit stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.

If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

At Austrian border control, you may need to:

  • show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for a second home
  • show proof of your travel insurance
  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay

Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the Austrian government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the  Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Austrian Embassy in the UK .

If you’re in Austria with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Read about  passport stamping if you live in Austria .

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Austria guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about  goods that can be brought into and taken out of Austria . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking food into Austria

You cannot take  meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries . There are some exceptions such as powdered baby milk, baby food and special foods or pet feed required for medical reasons.

Taking money into Austria

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more. You will get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you. If you do not, your money could be seized when you leave.

Hand in hand that’s HanseMerkur

Hansemerkur travel insurance – enjoy the best coverage, anywhere in the world.

An annual holiday on the Mediterranean, a semester abroad in Australia or club trip to Mallorca – wherever you are in the world: HanseMerkur offers private individuals and business people comprehensive protection if something happens. For example, we cover the costs in the event of travel cancellation and curtailment, as well as illness or accidents abroad – without incurring a deductible. In addition, the experts in our Travel Assistance Team are there for you around the clock in case of irregularities or emergencies abroad.

Travel insurance: A major plus for your safety and security when on holiday

Once a year for a summer holiday or when travelling regularly on the road – depending on how often you travel, we offer you suitable offers with individually tailored insurance cover: For example, holiday insurance for individual trips or travel insurance for any number of trips per year. If you are not travelling by plane, then  insurance cover for bus, train and car is the right choice. If you are driving yourself and are about to travel, for example, with your family by car or motorhome, we recommend travel insurance for Austria & Europe. Your advantage: With the combination of travel cancellation insurance and travel curtailment insurance, you are comprehensively covered both before your holiday against a possible trip cancellation – for numerous cancellation reasons – and during your holiday against an unexpected trip interruption. In addition, travel health cover is included for stays in other European countries.

If you travel several times a year, our annual travel insurance policies with and without cancellation protection are often worthwhile for as few as 2 trips a year. There is no deductible. The product range is rounded off by international health insurance for long-term stays, a particularly favourable travel insurance policy for groups and an attractive insurance solution as an individual insurance policy.

You not only want yourself, but also your luggage, to enjoy optimal protection when travelling? Luggage protection is an integral part of our cancellation and travel protection packages, as well as within our annual travel insurance policies. If your luggage is lost, damaged or even destroyed en route, we will reimburse you for the current value of the items you are carrying.
