How to Get There

The Esteros del Iberá is located in the sub-tropical north of Argentina in Corrientes Province . The relative remoteness of the location has enabled it to remain one of Argentina’s hidden gems.

Best way to travel from Buenos Aires to Iberá Wetlands

Many people believe that exploring Argentina is going to be fast and easy. But, for instance, the distance between Buenos Aires and Iberá Wetlands is 671 km.

You can take an overnight bus or private car from Buenos Aires (11 hours) or elsewhere in the country to the city of Mercedes.

Then, follow the others and jump on the next two-hour connection to Carlos Pellegrini, the primary hub for exploring Ibera.

There are more than 350 different birds species that call the Ibera marsh home, each as colorful as the next 🇦🇷Martín Pescador Grande 🇺🇸Ringed Kingfisher by @gag677

If you are taking a plane, the nearest airport is Posadas. There are daily flights from BA to Posadas airport, or you can take a private light aircraft to one of the Luxury eco-lodges in the area.

My suggestion of the best way to travel to Iberà Wetlands? Combine travel to IberàWetlands with a visit to Iguazu Falls.

You can take a plane from Buenos Aires to Posadas airport, visit the wetlands for four days, and then continue your trip to Iguazu. There are no flights between Puerto Iguazú and Posadas, but it is possible to connect them by land with a private transfer and see the Ruins of San Ignacio Miní, which are halfway between the two points.

It may be an effort to reach the Iberà Wetlands, but once you’ve arrived, you’ll be immersed in the wetlands’ wildlife and treated to a wonderfully authentic experience.

Best Time to Travel to Iberà Wetlands, Argentina

The great news is that you can visit the beautiful Iberà Wetlands year-round.

If, for instance, you don’t like very high temperatures, try to avoid the summer months (January until March).

Choose traveling in Spring (September until November) because it has suitable temperatures, the wetlands are colorful and filled with animals, but it also tends to rain a lot.

More relaxed and calm, the Autumn months (April and May) are a great time to visit this gorgeous area.

And If you want to avoid the crowds, travel to Ibera Wetlands, Argentina, in winter (June, July, and August) during the low season. The temperature will be lower, but the wetlands will be welcoming and dry.

If you are interested in bird migration, plan your trip between September and April, and prepare for memorable bird-watching sessions.

Iberà National Park Travel with a Purpose

There’s a new approach in many places in South America to travel Responsibly, sustainably, eco-friendly manner. Places working not only to conserve the natural environment but also to give back to local communities.

Iberà National Park is one of those places.

⁉️ But, Why is Iberà wetlands important? and Why is important to travel to Ibera Wetlands now?

As one of the largest bodies of water left on the planet, this region has supported all forms of life for thousands of years…

Two decades ago, Iberà was threatened; Many species were once hunted to extinction.

So, it’s essential to travel to Iberà Wetland now…

Not because it is a superb experience … it is a unique opportunity to help develop the wildlife conservation projects held there that can help preserve species like these cute Capybaras…

Read more about Iberà National Park Argentina and why It is important to travel to the Wetlands now.

Iberá Rewilding Project

Since 2007 The rewilding Iberá National Park project has been working to reintroduce species such as the giant anteater, pampas deer, collared peccary, guacamayo Rojo, and the jaguar, hopping to return Argentina’s wetlands to their former glory.

In 2001, Douglas Tompkins, a philanthropist, and conservationist acquired the farm Rinconvdel Socorro to create a 74,131- acre natural reserve that would be handled by his foundation, The Conservation Land Trust (CLT).

He had a simple but ambitious aim: to create the greatest natural park in Argentina, return the locally extinct fauna and foster an economy based on ecotourism….

Since late 2018, largely thanks to the efforts of Tompkins Conservation, the wetlands became a National Park, so helping to protect this South American wildlife wonderland for long into the future.

Today, the release of the female jaguar Mariua and her two captive-born marks the first reintroduction of jaguars in a place where they have gone extinct. It is part of an effort known as “rewilding” – restoring the missing species, biodiversity, and natural processes to areas affected by human activity….

So, traveling to Iberà Wetlands is not only about taking a vacation, it is a unique opportunity to help the development of these conservation projects….

Doesn’t it feel awesome that while traveling we can become agents of positive change in the world?

Iberá National Park: Northeast Argentina's wetland wonderland

Aug 23, 2019 • 6 min read

ibera wetlands tours

Knuckles grip the gunwales as visitors glide through the pristine wetlands on a horse-drawn canoe. Hooves splashing, spilling laughter as they part a tipsy path through the waterlilies. The local guide from Concepción delights in everybody’s soaking.

A silhouette of a person wearing a hat, standing in a boat holding a long pole at sunset. The wetlands reflect pink and purple. Iberá Wetlands, Northeast Argentina.

Soon enough the pace slows, but it’s moments like these that reveal adventuring to these remote lands to be pure joy. It’s also an original way to get immersed in the rich culture and wildlife of  Northeast Argentina while paying homage to the unique cowboy heritage of the wetlands.   Created in 2018, Iberá National Park is poised to become one of Argentina's greatest attractions. These restored wetlands feature some of the country’s best wildlife watching and criollo traditions from its unique Spanish and Guaraní heritage. While Northeast Argentina is best known for  Iguazú Falls , the largest waterfall system on the planet, and the haunting ruins of Jesuit missions like  San Ignacio Miní , travelers willing to explore more will be rewarded.

A capybara walks across the grass with a small brown and yellow bird on its back. Ibera National Park, Northeast Argentina

Safari, South American style

Welcome to full-immersion nature. This watery world is home to snapping caiman, 350 bird species and elegant marsh deer wading the shallows. Ply the waters of Laguna Iberá with local guides, spying innumerable species against a backdrop of flaming sunsets. On land, it’s not hard to come upon groups of rheas, howler monkeys and capybara – the world’s largest rodent and a gentle herbivore. Highly-endangered species like the jaguar, green-tipped macaw and giant river otter are also coming back, thanks to a groundbreaking rewilding initiative. Argentina was on the brink of losing this important ecosystem after decades of threats ranging from hunting and poaching to dams and mono-crops. In the late 1990s, conservationists Douglas and Kristine Tompkins stepped in, bought unprotected land and began a large-scale restoration of grasslands. Their organization, the  Conservation Land Trust (CLT), has gone on to reintroduce many locally extinct or endangered native species, like the giant anteater, collared peccary, bare-faced currosaw and pampas deer.

A close-up of a jaguar's face against a grassy background. Ibera, Northeast Argentina.

Restoration is still a work in progress. Just as the return of the wolf to Yellowstone helped regulate populations of prey and native flora, bringing back top predators to Iberá, such as the jaguar and giant river otter, is proving essential to restoring the ecological balance. It’s also starting to make Iberá a top South American wildlife-watching destination, like the Pantanal in nearby Brazil. Many hope that responsible tourism can help encourage the preservation of this unique ecosystem and give a boost to the rural economy.

Portals of adventure

With so many ways to get your thrills, the only question is where to start. Iberá National Park and the adjoining provincial park make up one of the largest protected areas in Argentina, so careful planning is important. The entrances form a ring around the wetlands, each one at several hours distance from the next. Visitors should either have their own vehicle or contract the services of a local tour operator.

In the park’s southeast, Portal Laguna Iberá has excellent camping next to the docks and a variety of lodging options, from guest houses to estancias, in the nearby town of Carlos Pellegrini. Excellent boat tours leave from the public docks. Nearby, Ríncon del Socorro is the primary center for rewilding, with abundant wildlife onsite in addition to midrange to upscale estancia lodgings and activities. It’s a privileged spot for wildlife watching, and with luck you might glimpse the elusive maned wolf.

A man on horseback pulls a canoe through the Iberá wetlands. Northeast Argentina.

To the west, Portal Carambola gives visitors a way to get hands-on in the wetlands and glimpse a disappearing lifestyle. Kayaking, horse-drawn canoe tours and aquatic horse-riding trips are offered by community guides. These activities are roughly based on a traditional criollo lifestyle, when ranchers raised cattle in these flooded pastures. A highlight is taking an overnight aquatic riding tour, where sturdy horses wade through the marshland and swim alongside their riders in deeper spots. Make your base in the colonial-style village of Concepción.

To the north,  Portal Cambyreta features good camping facilities and short trails. Beyond the quality time you can spend here with capybara and caimans, you can spot the first flock of green-tipped macaws to return to Argentina.   Rewilding fanatics can splurge with a journey to the heart of the wetlands.

The isolated island of San Alonso is home to the jaguar breeding center and the giant otter reintroduction pen. While these sites are not open to visitation, you can still enjoy a comfortable estancia stay with guided wildlife walks and boating. Privately run by CLT, it’s only accessible by charter flight or charter boat.

A black howler monkey sits at the crux of a tree in the Iberá wetlands. Northeast Argentina.

Make it happen

Visits can be made year-round, though summer (December through February) is hot. Mild temperatures make spring and autumn ideal. Cool and dry, August is favorable for wildlife watching as water sources have somewhat dried up. September and October are prime months to visit Iguazú Falls without the crowds. For more information about the different wetland portals and available activities and services, check out the park's website  or the region's municipal tourism page .

Ríncon del Socorro This gorgeous estancia hotel with onsite restaurant, organic garden and swimming pool is a great base for wildlife watching.

Estancia San Alonso  On a private island in the wetlands, this exclusive estancia home has ten rooms and can be reached by boat or charter plane. Activities include kayaking, horse riding and hiking.

The Ultimate Guide to Exploring the Ibera Wetlands, Argentina

Ibera Wetlands

As the second largest marshlands in the world (beaten only by Brazil’s Pantanal), Argentina’s Ibera Wetlands are teeming with fascinating fauna which makes them a must for any wildlife enthusiast in the region. Best of all, despite being located between Buenos Aires and Iguazu, few tourists travel the rough unpaved road to get here meaning it’s an off the beaten track experience that is destined to impress. Here’s our guide to the region.

Getting there.

The primary hub for exploring Ibera is the lakeside village of Carlos Pellegrini, a quaint little tourist town full of sleepy estancias and travel agencies. Most travelers arrive by taking a long distance bus from Buenos Aires or elsewhere in the country to the city of Mercedes, then jumping on the next two-hour connection to Carlos Pellegrini.

Those who prefer to travel by air will find the nearest airport at Posadas , from which a scarcely traveled four-hour road leads to town.

Caiman

Budget: The no-frills Posada Jasy offers budget travelers clean and serviceable dorm rooms, a filling breakfast, and a pleasant outdoor patio space with ample hammocks to kick back and relax in.

High end: For a luxurious estancia (country lodge) right in the heart of the wetlands, it’s hard to go past Rincón del Socorro. This elegant whitewashed estate is packed full of polished wood and leather trimmings, a true shout out to the regional gaucho style. Better yet, its inviting outdoor pool is the perfect spot to cool off after a tough day exploring the marsh.

A post shared by Rincon del Socorro (@rincondelsocorro) on Jun 26, 2017 at 4:21am PDT

Covering an area almost the size of Switzerland (some 13,000 square kilometers (5,019 square miles), to be precise), the swamps, lagoons, lakes, and bogs of Iberá boast the most diverse array of wildlife in the country. Expect to come across two different species of alligator, deer, giant otter, countless capybara or even anaconda and monkeys. Birders will rejoice in the more than 350 different species that call the marsh home, each as colorful as the next.

Capybara

A walk from the edge of town to the office at the park entrance provides a nice opportunity to see the wetlands on foot and is particularly picturesque come sunset. Upon arrival, there is a marked treelined trail that passes through some friendly families of howler monkeys.

Ibera Wetlands

A fun independent way to explore the park is on a kayak and rentals can be arranged for 300 ARS (US$15) for up to three people per hour. Obviously, you won’t see as much wildlife this way, but it’s still a nice experience for those who really wish to get away from it all.

The best way to see fauna is by boat, allowing a skilled guide to show you the most wildlife-rich areas in the region. There are two spots to choose from – the southwest and the southeast – which take about three hours each to explore and both of which are entirely worthwhile if time permits.

Evening boat tour

Another great alternative is to jump on a horse riding tour through the forests and swamps that are scattered throughout the park. Tours require an obligatory guide which means they are suitable for both expert and beginner riders alike.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.

Discover Ibera Wetlands

Travel to one of the most exotic destinations in argentina..

Photo: Aguape Lodge

One of the largest wetlands in South America

Ibera Wetlands (or Esteros del Ibera in Spanish), as the second largest freshwater wetland in the world (the first is the Pantanal of Brazil), hosts a great diversity of flora and fauna that attract the attention of thousands of visitors every year who enjoy this natural paradise, always generating the least impact on the environment and also helping local communities.

In Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, a small town closet to Ibera Marshes and around 500 km away from Buenos Aires or 200 km from Posadas, Misiones, you can find many lodges to stay and enjoy this natural reserve. These places offer stays with all meals included and activities of all kinds to enjoy (like horseriding or boat trips to the lagoons). Ibera Wetlands is the best place for wildlife enthusiasts and can be perfectly combined with other places like Iguazu Falls and Buenos Aires. Do not miss the opportunity to see the cabins (or lodges) available in this destination and our trips too!

History of Ibera Marshlands

The first scientific research in the area will be born with the French naturalist Alcide d’Orbigny in 1820, where in his books “ Voyage dans l’Amérique Méridionale “ would capture the situation of Ibera Wetlands. However, until the creation of the Administration of National Parks in Argentina in 1930, this region would not have a greater interest in terms of conservation.

However, and even with the creation of the Administration of National Parks, it was very difficult to obtain the support of the Argentine National State, since in that zone many productive activities took place that was the motor of development for the region. When poaching almost generated the extinction of the Yaguarete, attention was given to the creation of a provincial reserve to grant the area a minimum of protection.

In 1983, after much work and insistence by various organizations, and with the aim of preserving the nature of the place, Corrientes province creates the Ibera Provincial Reserve, that covers a land of approximately 1,300,000 hectares (the Ibera Park is located inside of this, and has a size of 700,000 hectares).

After some time, in 2016, the province of Corrientes gave jurisdiction to the Argentine national state for the creation of the National Park and Reserve on the lands of The Conservation Land Trust (CLT), giving greater protection to almost 150,000 hectares where a large part of tourist activities is done. In addition, CLT committed to the delivery of the land to the state in accordance with the mission of this organization to preserve natural land in different regions of South America.

On December 5, 2018, the creation of the Ibera National Park Law was approved, giving it the highest possible hierarchy of a park in Argentina, resulting in greater legal protection (such as the prohibition of fumigation over the entire area) and allowing the conservation of the area for future generations.

Flora and Fauna of Ibera Wetlands

This area is home to more than 300 species of birds, 85 of mammals, 45 of amphibians, and 35 of reptiles, as well as a great diversity of subtropical landscapes. This is why the protection of the area is extremely important, which also implies that every traveler must visit the place with the responsibility and respect that this nature enviroment deserves.

In that area, you can find a variety of landscapes such as lagoons and floating islands (reservoirs), swamps and marsh, forests, and savannah. When you visit this area, you will discover a wide variety of jungle landscapes and wildlife, along with animals such as marsh deer, capybara, and caiman.

Iberá Wetlands Nature and Wildlife Tours - From Posadas to Iberá

ibera-wildlife (4)

  • Transfer from Posadas to  Iberá Wetlands

Upon arrival in Posadas, you will be taken to a local estancia (typical Argentine ranch), settled in the Esteros del Iberá area, near the popular Iberá wetlands. Esteros del Iberá is more of a once-in-a-lifetime experience than a tour.

This is the perfect place for travelers who want to experience ecotourism,  explore an off-the-beaten-path destination in Argentina, and be truly in contact with nature and local fauna. The Esteros are the second-largest wetlands in the world, after Pantanal in Brazil, and are also one of the biggest freshwater reservoirs on the continent.

The estancia is the perfect base to explore the area and enjoy a typical gaucho environment. This is much more like a family house than a hotel, so you can try homemade food and learn about the inhabitants’ customs. Once in the estancia, you will have the afternoon to explore the beautiful, secluded countryside on foot or on horseback.

Iberá Wetlands Tours: Wildlife & Nature

ibera-wildlife (10)

  • Explore the Iberá Wetlands: boat trip or horseback ride

After a homemade breakfast, you will head out to explore the Ibera wetlands. Take a boat trip to see alligators and capybaras, and do some serious flora and fauna sightseeing. The natural reserve is home to some exotic species which have been declared Provincial Natural Monuments, like the marsh deer, as well as some impressive aquatic vegetation. If you prefer an even more adventurous activity, ride a horseback ride along the Iberá marshes and feel like a real Argentine gaucho.

Say Hueque Tips

Look at some of the typical Esteros del Iberá local fauna and make your own “checklist”; if you’re lucky you may get to see them all! The best time to spot wildlife in this spellbinding place is early morning or sunset, when the animals are more active.

Once you arrive in Posadas you’ll take the public bus to Puerto Iguazú (180 miles away), the gateway city into the famous Iguazú Falls. If you would prefer to schedule private transportation to bring you to Puerto Iguazú, please just let us know and we will quote it for you.

Recommended tour in Iguazú f or your first day:

  • For the most adventurous, we recommend taking a bike tour through the rainforest with a specialized guide. You will discover the flora and fauna, the sounds of the jungle, the trails of little native mammals and the traditions of the Guaranies.

Iguazú Falls, Argentine Side

iguazu-falls-natural-wonder

  • Wander Iguazú Falls National Park and meet The Devil’s Throat

Today our driver and bilingual guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the National Park, on the Argentinian side. Enjoy a 7-hour tour wandering through the rainforest!

The falls are surrounded by a humid subtropical forest where the exuberant vegetation is home to many different animals and birds. Our guide will help you spot some of them: ant birds, toucans, manakins, parrots, coatis, just to name a few of the most common birds. Lower and upper walkways weave in and around falls permitting up close and personal experiences with this magnificent spectacle of nature.

The Argentine side of the falls is filled with a myriad of paths and walkways and stairways which allow you to have an experience from many different perspectives. You will have the chance to meet “The Devil’s throat”: the largest of the falls and for many the most spellbinding. To get to the “Devil’s throat” you take the ecological train and then walk out along boardwalks. After walking and taking pictures of animals and plants, you will have some free time to eat lunch in this amazing environment. At the end of the experience, we will drive you back to your hotel.

  • Would you love to have a “Great Adventure”?

The “Great Adventure” (gran aventura) is an optional tour you can add on this day. You will take an open air jeep through the rainforest and then a zodiac open air boat ride up the river to the base of the falls (there is a 100% chance that you will get soaking wet on this boat trip, so be sure to take some extra clothes!).

Iguazú Falls, Brazilian Side - End of Your Trip

iguazu-falls-amazing-waterfalls

  • Visit the Brazilian side of Iguazú National Park

After breakfast, enjoy a 3-4  hour tour to the Brazilian side of the Iguazú Fall s. While Argentina has 80% of the falls on its side, Brazil has the best panoramic view. On the Argentinian side you will have the sensation of being right inside the falls, but only by visiting the Brazilian side you will fully appreciate the immensity of Iguazú falls. Take your time to enjoy it and feel it, to stroll the different walkways and feel the spray of water in your face. Take the boardwalk over the Salto Santa María, it feels like walking on the water. Get closer to the “Devil’s Throat” and feel the power of water! We are sure this is a day you will never forget. At the end of the day we will drive you back to your hotel.

  • Transfer to the airport

This is the end of your visit to Iguazú Fall and your trip to Iberá Marshlands. At the appropriate time in the afternoon, we’ll drive you to the airport. If you don’t want to end this adventure, you can choose to extend your travels by adding on any optional activities, touring in Brazil, Patagonia or the Andes area.

I wanted to express our gratitude for your exceptional assistance in planning our recent trip to Argentina and Chile. The experience exceeded all expectations, and we are incredibly thankful for your recommendations that played a significant role in creating lasting memories for our family.

Here are some highlights from our trip that we wanted to share: Glacial trek, Aldebaran Hotel - a unanimous favorite for its post-trek relaxation and rejuvenating massages, El Chalten hikes and the New Year's Eve dinner

We had an incredible journey, and your contributions made it truly special.

Thank you once again for your excellent planning and support. We look forward to working with you in the future.

Best regards

My brother and I had a fantastic time in Patagonia and are so grateful for everything you did to make this such an amazing trip!! The itinerary you put together for us was perfect and we especially enjoyed the Laguna de los tres hike and big ice trek on the Perito Moreno glacier. Thank you so much for squeezing us into all the activities and accommodations. We are already looking forward to coming back and I've attached a few pictures of us :).

The trip was absolutely fantastic. We had such a great time! The guides were all knowledgeable and enthusiastic and a lot of fun to spend the days with. I want to give personal recognition to the tours/groups in Buenos Aires, El Calafate, Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, and the jeep tour on day 1 of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you for your hard work and support for setting up this trip. The Vamos app is also fantastic and really helped throughout the trip!

I hope to keep in touch for any future trips!

Gracias y saludos a todos!

The most remarkable aspect of the expedition was, undoubtedly, the breathtaking wildlife. The landscapes were a sanctuary to an array of unique creatures. Majestic whales gracefully breached the icy waters, while adorable penguins waddled along the shores, seemingly unfazed by our presence. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat was an experience that words cannot fully capture. It's a memory that will forever be etched in my mind.

the service on the cruise was exceptional. The crew’s knowledge and passion for the region were evident in their informative lectures and their willingness to share their expertise. They ensured our safety while also going above and beyond to make our journey comfortable and memorable.

This cruise to Antarctica was an incredible expedition. Adventure, natural beauty, and wildlife encounters were the main stars. Luckily we enjoyed a smooth sail through the Drake Passage, so we could admire the astounding wildlife, and the outstanding service made this journey a once-in-a-lifetime experience that exceeded all expectations. If you seek an adventure that stirs the soul and leaves an indelible mark, an Antarctic cruise is an absolute must.

The opportunity to step foot on the untouched Antarctica was a privilege. The glaciers, the icy terrain, and the absolute stillness were both humbling and invigorating. Exploring via zodiac boats allowed us to get up close to the landscape and wildlife, providing an intimate experience of this raw, unspoiled wilderness. Thanks to every member of the crew that made this adventure an unforgettable experience!

I specially want to thank Antonella and Lucia for their hard work and dedication towards our very successful holiday. Your dedication and eye to detail was very much appreciated.

Celia our guide for our two days at Iguazu falls was exceptional.

We will definitely recommend Sayhueque to our friends back in Australia.

The trip was really great, everything went smoothly and I had a great time! The organisation was great and I have nothing to really complain about.

I would rate this trip 9.5/10 and definitely recommend it to others if they wanted to go to Patagonia. The activities that you chose were very good and the organisation was great. Also because of the 24/7 emergency contact that responded very quickly. Felipe, our travel advisor was great help!

Thanks for everything

The trip was spectacular- we enjoyed every moment and everything went smoothly.

A big thank you to you and the entire team for helping us put this trip together.

We will definitely be in touch for our upcoming trips to the region!
