Silhouettes of four climbers in front of Everest at sunset on a clear day, Nepal

Learn more about Nepal

Best time to visit nepal.

Nepal's climate is primarily temperate, with some tropical and alpine regions. From June until August, the monsoon hits, making it too wet and humid for trekking.

The post-monsoon period from September to November is rice-harvesting season and is characterised by lush vegetation, clean air and excellent mountain views. Days are warm and sunny, although nights become increasingly cool. This is the start of the trekking season, which runs until May.

Winter (December to February) is dry and clear, with temperatures dropping below freezing at high altitudes, although in Kathmandu, it can still sometimes reach a pleasant 25 º C.

Spring (March to May) is warmer and is a particularly beautiful time to visit as the rhododendrons and the orchids are in flower.

Culture and customs

With more than 30 different ethnic groups and a wide range of religions and language dialects, Nepalese society is rich in diversity. With Indian, Tibetan, Chinese and Mongolian influences, Nepalese food, clothing, customs and music vary, depending on what area you're travelling in and what ethnicity people belong to or identify with.

Learn more about regional culture on a 15 day Tamang Heritage & Langtang Valley Trek.

Hinduism is the dominant religion, followed by Buddhism. Standing alongside these religions, there are also small populations of people who follow Islam and Christianity. Simultaneously, animist beliefs and belief in spirits is common throughout Nepal, particularly within rural communities.

Like India, the caste system exists in Nepal, as does the custom of arranged marriage. As one of the least urbanised countries in the world, life differs greatly between the rural and city-dwelling populations, with rural people largely living a very simple, traditional life - slow-paced, village-based, in connection to their family and local community. Nepalese people are generally very friendly and welcoming of travellers.

Experience Nepal from a new perspective on our culturally-centred 13 day Nepal Women's Expedition.

Eating and drinking

With Tibetan, Chinese and Indian influences, Nepalese food is flavoursome without being too spicy, filling without being rich and reasonably priced for travellers on a budget.

Things to try in Nepal

These fried or steamed dumplings are usually filled with meat or cheese. Comparable to Tibetan momos, kothey are flavoursome snacks that can usually be bought cheaply from street stalls or markets.

Popular with vegetarians and vegans, this lentil soup is usually served with rice and found almost everywhere in Nepal. A safe yet tasty choice for everyone.

This spiced meat curry will usually consist of chicken, buffalo or mutton, as beef hardly features on the menu in Nepal for religious reasons.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Nepal shares borders with   China   and   India   and is home to a wide range of landscapes and habitats. As much as 75% of Nepal's land is dominated by hills and mountain ranges, including the world's highest mountain, but there's so much more to this region than Everest.

A lot of the country is known as the Terai region, characterised by forests, plains, marshes and scrub and w ithin these varied landscapes are the many impressive animal species that inhabit this region. Chitwan National Park is perhaps one of the best places in all of Asia to see its incredible wildlife. Home to a variety of common and protected species, you may be able to spot some exciting house names like the single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros, leopard and the Bengal Tiger.

Experience the beauty of wild Nepal on our 11 day Family Holiday with Teenagers.

History and government

Early history.

Nepal has been inhabited by people for more than 2,500 years, with evidence suggesting tribes of mountain-dwelling people moved to the area from China and other Central Asian regions. Due to a lack of archaeological evidence, little is known about the early periods of history in Nepal, with legend and folklore providing the backdrop to this kingdom of mystery. Ruled early on by the Kirati Dynasty, Nepal continued to be ruled by a succession of dynasties until the Malla Dynasty emerged in the 12th century. During this time, the kingdom expanded rapidly and widely before evolving into small communities with local rule. By the 15th century, many temples and palaces had been built in Nepal, some of which are still in existence either as functioning temples or UNESCO World Heritage sites. The kingdom of Nepal was unified by King Shah in 1768 and went on to sign commercial treaties with Britain in 1792 and 1816 after hostilities with the British East India Company.

Visit a relic of Nepal's royal power on our One Week in Nepal Tour.

Recent history

Nepal held its first elections in 1959, but with the king dissolving parliament and banning political parties soon after, Nepal's monarchy retained power. After decades of pro-democracy movements, Nepal was finally declared a democratic republic in 2008, with Nepal's monarchy being removed from power after ruling for more than 240 years. Nepal celebrated its Year of Tourism in 2011, with arrivals increasing year upon year since 2006 due to increased infrastructure, expansion of air travel and the enduring popularity of the Himalayas and mighty Mount Everest. Learn about Nepal's climbing history at the International Mountain Museum in Pokhara during a Nepal trekking tour.

Indra Jatra

This eight-day festival held in Kathmandu features ceremonies, dancing and displays of spirituality, but none of these events compares to the spectacle of the third day when Kumari (the living goddess) tours the city streets aboard a chariot. Other popular gods also come out to play and parade, as masked dancers perform in Durbar Square in this exceptional display of local culture.

Mani Rimdu Festival

Offering a rare chance to observe the Sherpa culture of the Everest region, this festival held at Tengboche Monastery features days of meditation cycles, religious ceremonies, masked dances and parades. Nepal travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Nepal?

All foreign nationals (except Indian passport holders) require a visa to enter Nepal. Visas are obtainable from embassies abroad, land borders (including borders with India & Tibet) and on arrival at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan Airport.

Getting a visa at the airport or land borders can sometimes take time due to long queues. There have been instances when travellers are asked to show proof of exit from the country, i.e. flight tickets. You may also need to provide two passport photos and the following fees in US dollars (subject to change, cash only). Other currencies are also accepted, although rates may differ.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Nepal?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Nepal, it's considered polite to leave service workers in restaurants and cafes a 10% tip if a service charge hasn't already been included in the bill.

What is the internet access like in Nepal?

Travellers will be able to access the internet in large cities like Kathmandu. Smaller towns, isolated areas and rural villages may have limited to no access, so prepare to disconnect when leaving the city.

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in urban areas, but can be patchy and less reliable in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated on your phone before you arrive.

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in Nepal. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitiser, as they aren't usually provided.

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely   accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Airports are not yet equipped to international accessibility standards and there are few (if any) adapted vehicles available for hire. Only a few high-end hotels have custom built bathrooms ie. with safety rails or roll in showers. Getting around can be challenging for travellers with disabilities as pedestrians often share the road with vehicles, cities and towns are crowded and streets winding and chaotic. Rickshaws and taxis can be hired easily in Kathmandu, although traffic congestion can be severe. Porters and assistants are readily available for trekking trips. The country is keen to make headway in the accessibility space, with an annual conference on Accessible Tourism being held since 2014 and a shift towards more positive attitudes in the way people with disabilities are perceived in the region. The first “accessible trekking trail” in the country was opened near Pokhara in 2018. Travel companies have arranged custom treks and adventures in Nepal for travellers with disabilities, including on the popular Everest Base Camp route.

Is Nepal a LGBTQI-friendly destination?

Everyone should feel comfortable when they travel with Intrepid and we know that many of our travellers are part of the LGBTQI community. It’s important for our travellers to be aware of the local laws and customs in the destinations we visit as some countries have laws that discriminate against LGBTQI people. We recommend you visit  Equaldex  and/or  Smartraveller  before you choose your trip for up-to-date advice and information about LGBTQI-related laws.

Nepal legalised homosexuality in 2007 and implemented protection by law on the basis of sexual orientation the same year. The new constitution of 2015 also contained a number of provisions for the LGBTQI community, including the right to have preferred gender on ID cards and allowance of some gender neutral terms. It is expected that future ratifications of the constitution may include legalisation of same-sex marriage. Nepal recognises a third gender (meti). Nepal Pride is an annual event held in Kathmandu since 2001 and the Nepal Tourism Board is keen to promote the country as an LGBTQI-friendly destination. Despite the openness of the laws, many LGBTQI Nepalis face discrimination and societal pressure for heterosexual marriage, with harassment and violence, particularly for transgender people, not uncommon. For the LGBTQI visitor to Nepal it’s unlikely you will experience any difficulties or hostility. Holding hands with your partner is socially acceptable, but public intimacy is generally frowned upon as Nepal is still quite conservative in this regard.

Does my trip to Nepal support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Nepal directly support our foundation partners, Sagarmatha Next and Seven Women.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Sagarmatha Next

Sagarmatha Next are tackling waste management issues in the Everest region of Nepal. Donations help them remove waste responsibly, empower travellers with knowledge on how to care for the environment here and host artists who are turning rubbish into art at their information centre.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Namaste! Welcome to Nepal. Arrive in Kathmandu and take your complimentary airport transfer to the hotel. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm where you'll meet your trip leader and fellow travellers. The evening is free to explore the streets of Kathmandu, whose mixture of ancient architecture and modern development, and rich artistic and cultural heritage means it remains the legendary destination it has been for decades. Crowded markets and bazaars are the centre of Nepali life, and the narrow streets are home to holy men, monks, bicycles, incense, goats, and sacred cows. You may like to join your leader and group for an optional dinner at one of Kathmandu's fine Nepali restaurants.

Day 2: Kathmandu

Meals included: breaksfast.

Weather permitting, you'll have the option to take a Mount Everest scenic flight this morning. This experience will take you over Sagamartha National Park through a crescendo of the highest peaks in the world, getting up close to Mount Everest. After breakfast, you'll explore Kathmandu, visiting Pashupatinath, the most famous Hindu temple in the country, located on the banks of the holy Bagmati River. Here you'll see Hindu holy men (sadhus) meditating, pilgrims bathing and occasionally funeral pyres burning on the ghats. You'll also visit Bodhnath Stupa, one of the most significant Buddhist shrines in the world, where you can observe Buddhist monks in prayer in the monasteries surrounding the stupa. After lunch, it's time to explore Swayambhunath Temple (the Monkey Temple). A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is one of the city's most famous temples and fascinatingly reflects Buddhist and Hindu beliefs. From here, you'll head to Durbar Square, which sits at the front of the old royal palace. You'll get a chance to admire the beautiful temples and browse the stalls of merchant's wares. The evening is yours to explore the city as you wish. After a morning of exploring, you'll head to a local Tibetan Refugee Camp for lunch. You'll hear stories of their journey from Tibet to Nepal, learn about local life and take part in a traditional cooking demonstration to find out how to make delicious momos (steamed dumplings). Of course, you'll sit down for a group lunch and tuck into the fruits of your labour. In the afternoon, you'll take a scenic boat ride across the lake (Phewa Tal). Day 5: Bandipur

Today you'll travel to Bandipur by private vehicle. This traditional Nepalese town is a natural treasure and one of the country's hidden gems. Bandipur was once an essential stop for traders travelling to Tibet, and the town's single main street is still lined with buildings that once housed a wide variety of merchants. Many of the buildings have been converted now, but their architecture remains. Enjoy a peaceful stay in this charming, rural location.

Day 6: Bandipur

Enjoy a day of free time to explore Bandipur further. The surrounding hills are ideal for hiking along trails that will take you through tribal villages and hilltop shrines that once doubled as fortresses. Bhaktapur was once the capital of Nepal and the Great Malla Kingdom during the 15th century. Its rich heritage, inspiring temples and artisanal history played a big part in Bhaktapur being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy an evening of exploration on your own, soak up the lovely atmosphere in one of the local cafes, or simply relax in your hotel. Included Activities: - Chitwan NP - Bird watching tour

International Travel

  • The monsoon season is from June to September and weather conditions can disrupt travel during this time due to flooding and landslides. Disruption of air travel and airport closures are also possible. Be prepared for your itinerary needing to change at short notice.
  • ROAD TRAVEL:
  • Roadworks and infrastructure projects can cause significant delays on major roads within cities and highways between destinations. Road travel can also be disrupted due to demonstrations and bandhs (strikes) without warning. Major roadworks are currently ongoing in and around Kathmandu and the roads to Chitwan National Park. Delays, heavy traffic, poor road conditions, and dust are a reality of road travel in Nepal.
  • AIR TRAVEL:
  • Nepal's only international airport, Tribhuvan International Airport, has a single runway that services both domestic and international flights. Cancellations and delays are frequent, especially during peak tourist seasons or in poor weather. Travellers have on occasion missed international connections as a result of this. Ensure you have adequate travel insurance and contact numbers for your airlines before departure.
  • The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
  • Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.

Important Information

  • 1. A complimentary airport arrival transfer is included; valid if you are arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-tour accommodation through us. You must provide your flight details to your booking agent at least 14 days prior to travel.
  • 2. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement excludes Days 5, 6 and 9 (Guesthouse) and Days 7 and 8 (Lodge) where you will be in shared accommodation and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
  • 3. Please provide your full name exactly as per passport at the time of booking (including any middle names listed on your passport) for flight tickets. Fees may apply for adding or amending details within 45 days of departure, and in some cases you will be required to cover the cost of issuing new tickets.

Check out our Q&As

Is this trip right for you.

This trip does not go to high altitudes, so if this was keeping you back from visiting Nepal in the past, this trip is for you. While on a map you aren't travelling particularly far, the reality of road travel in Nepal is that things always take longer than you expect. Some roads will be bumpy, dusty or even unexpectedly blocked requiring reroutes and plenty of patience. Hotels in some destinations may vary in standard and facilities, and hot water may occasionally be limited. There will be times when the location of our accommodation will mean it is practical to eat at the hotel restaurant rather than heading out for optional meals. While there will be opportunities to spot many different kinds of wildlife, sightings cannot be guaranteed. You will see tour operators offering elephant riding activities and many tourists taking part in them during your time in Chitwan. Intrepid Travel has a strong elephant welfare policy and as such we discourage travellers from riding elephants in Nepal or anywhere around the world. Please refer to the 'Responsible Travel' section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.

Reviews of this Operator

North american adventure.

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

Cambodia Discovery

The overall experience was fantastic. V good tour leader. All places visited had something special to do or see. I would book a tour with this company again. Only one negative tour hub is not I repeat not available to contact direct by phone.

Explore Southern Africa

Best trip ever was, 2 things I didn't like the black mamba stop was wasting day and village ,so 2 night I think was just wasting, I could do 2 days in Kruger, and one more night in delta

Amazing Guatemala and beyond tour with Intrepid

Did Guatemala and beyond trip in November 22. It was amazing, we were so well looked after by our guide Aura. She was very knowledgeable and during our bus trips she gave us the history of the 4 countries. The border crossings can be tricky but handled very well by our guide. We saw all the most interesting and beautiful places. The hotels were lovely comfortable colonial style. I will travel with intrepid again

Central American Journey

Very enjoyable, good paced Tour. Tour Leader, Choko was helpful, knowledgeable and extremely informative.

Wonderful Croatian tour

Our tour guide,Tamara, was the highlight of our Explore Croatia tour. She was knowledgeable, organized, and so kind and fun. Croatia is a beautiful country. I loved the people, the scenery, the food, the history. I hope to go back one day. Intrepid was perfect for me. There was group time and there was plenty of free time. It wasn’t a luxury tour but all of our accommodations were clean and safe. The dinner in Hvar was SO special!

One Week In Costa Rica

The trip was amazing, everything was well planned out & there wasn't any issues. The tour guide was very friendly and made the experience fun. During the trip I didn't have to worry about safety as we were never put in harms way. I would definitely recommend & do again.

North Morocco Adventure

Touring the beautiful North of Morocco I learned far more than I’d anticipated in this 9 day tour. Interesting sights to see, with knowledgeable local guides, this tour provides a great balance of exposure to a different culture with ample time for relaxation. Chefchaouen is an absolute highlight, & not a place many Morocco trips of this kind go to. Loved it!

Essential Morocca

Essential Morocco was an absolute dream. Every single day had such informative walking tours and tours of local facilities. Whether it was dinner with a local family or visiting a pottery factory, I learned so much about Moroccan culture. The accommodations were safe and I felt secure the entire 11 days. This trip wouldn’t have been the same without one person. That person is Youssef. If you are coming to Morocco with Intrepid and you don’t request Youssef, you’re doing it wrong. Words cannot describe how incredible of a guide he is. There were 3 of us on our trip of 18-29 year olds and he made us all feel so welcome and safe all the time. Whether that is cracking jokes on long drives or giving us the itinerary for the next day, Youssef ensured we felt respected and seen.

Cambodia Adventure

Absolutely superb leader - knowledgeable. fun, safety conscious. Group of 15 travellers from 5 countries who bonded into a solid team. In addition to a fantastic itinerary, our leader’s love of karaoke made the trip unforgettable. It even inspired a song written as a tribute to him.

Classic Nepal Tour Tour

Classic Nepal Tour

We had a really wonderful time on our trip to Nepal. Everyone at Everest Tours was really helpful and our driver Raju was excellent. Accommodation and food was good too. We got to see everything mentioned in the tour information. The only downside was the travel between locations which, due to the road works, was not a pleasant experience. We were in a small car which is really not suitable for the terrain, suggestion would be that the tour operator should be using 4x4 vehicles for these trips. This trip allowed us to get familiar with Nepal and we will be back!

My Nepal journey with Relax Getaway was fantastic. Booking online was a breeze with Kushal and Resham's quick responses. In Nepal, everything went smoothly with Pradip managing additional activities I wanted. While the service was excellent, the road conditions left something to be desired.

Epic scenery, amazing group of people - such a fun dynamic, and everyone was so supportive as the trek got into the higher altitudes. Loved every second.

Everest Base Camp Trek 12 Days Tour

Everest Base Camp Trek 12 Days

We recently had the opportunity to embark on the Everest Base Camp trek with Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Team, and I must say, it was an experience of a lifetime. What sets this company apart is their commitment to sustainable tourism and their use of local guides. This not only ensures that you receive authentic knowledge and cultural insights but also contributes to the local communities and economies. From the moment I joined the trek, I felt a deep connection to the local culture. Our guide, a Sherpa with extensive knowledge of the region, shared fascinating stories and anecdotes that brought the mountains to life. It was evident that he had a genuine passion for his homeland and was dedicated to preserving its beauty and heritage. Throughout the trek, we had the opportunity to interact with local communities, visit monasteries, and witness traditional ceremonies. This immersive experience allowed us to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of the region. It was truly a privilege to be a part of their world, even if only for a short time. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Team's commitment to sustainable tourism was evident in every aspect of the trip. They ensured that we left no trace, minimizing our impact on the environment. They also supported local businesses and initiatives, further contributing to the well-being of the communities we visited. The accommodations and meals provided were excellent, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and traditional Nepali cuisine. It was a delight to savor the flavors and experience the culinary traditions of the region. The team took great care in catering to dietary preferences and ensuring that we were well-nourished throughout the trek. I highly recommend Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Team to travelers who are looking for sustainable tours and authentic cultural experiences. Their use of local guides ensures that you have access to true, firsthand knowledge and insights. This, combined with their commitment to preserving the environment and supporting local communities, makes them an excellent choice for those seeking meaningful and responsible adventures.

I think it is hard to find good tour guide in Nepal. However, Shailesh and his team are very reliable and had so great tours. At the Kathmandu tour, the tour guide has PhD(his name is Kumar), so he has a lot of deep knowledge of Kathmandu and Nepali-an cultures and religions. At the Himalaya trekking tour, the tour guide(his name is NaWin) knows everything about Nepal. Even other guide in Himalaya asked our guide where the Mt. Everest and other mountains are...(This is the point I realized it is hard to find GOOD tour guide in Nepal) I heard that all members of Shailesh company has grade A+ of guide school. This is why they are reliable. Throughout the tour, they are very friendly and helpful. Even the trouble happened about porter, the guide took a responsibility. I was just impressed their attitudes to their job. I highly recommend Shailesh and his teams tour.

Our recent trip to Nepal was an amazing experience . It truly was a trip of a lifetime! Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by Shailesh Pokharel, the local travel advisor and this was a fantastic start! Despite the constant rainy weather everything went as planned. The trip, overall, was a huge success. Even in difficult, due to the rain situations, our guide, Valmiki Rijal, Sujan, as we used to call him, offered alternative solutions that help us to enjoy every moment of our trip. On the way to every location, he provided interesting and fascinating facts about the history and geography of the places and regions. He is very knowledgeable about Nepal in general, he is nice and engaging and made sure to give us an amazing experience. Sujan was very patient with us and did his best to accommodate our needs and interests. Sujan is a great guide, a true sample of excellent tour guide! After spending 7 days with him, I don’t hesitate to say that we got an exceptional friend in Nepal. Apart of the rainy weather, the other problem we faced was the bad condition of the 2 hotels we stayed in, but again everybody did their best to facilitate our stay. Both Shailesh Pokharel and Valmiki Rijal, (Sujan) and all the people met in Nepal were so friendly that make us felt like home. During our stay in Nepal, we always felt like we were among friends. We really loved meeting Sujan’s family and enjoying the dinner, Shailesh’s wife offered to us at their home. Shailesh and Sujan you have did a great job. Thank you! We highly recommend Nepal Trekking Routes!

We mainly had Sudip for our guide on this trip and he was excellent going out of his way to ensure everyone on the trip was comfortable and accommodated for...is one of the best holidays of my life. I will book ABC in a few years with them and bring my son with me. We had a group of 13 Aussies ranging from 30 to 70 yrs old...everyone had a top time and amazing experience.

What people love about Nepal Tours

G adventures is dialled when it comes to the EBC trek.
The best trekking company in Nepal! I spent a month in Nepal and did two separate treks with Alpine Ramble – the 11 day Annapurna Circuit and 8 day Everest Base Camp. I did a fair amount of research on trekking companies before booking and Alpine Ramble more than deserves the reputation it has in review sections like these! First up, you have Dil who is the mastermind behind it all. He was really easy to contact via WhatsApp before I arrived. He was able to plan a trip for me that allowed me to see both Annapurna and Everest regions, with enough time for acclimatisation, rest and unforeseen delays. Speaking of which, my flight to Lukla was delayed one day due to weather, which is very common. But this is when Dil went above and beyond. He organised a helicopter to take me the next day, at no additional charge. For context, the other people on the heli had to pay upwards of $300 each. Now I’m sure Dil wouldn’t be able to do this for every customer, but it just shows how committed he is to making sure you have the best time. And I’m so thankful, it was only one of the best experiences of my life! Now onto the guides and porters. I had Basanta and Prakash for ACT, and Krishna Dhakar and Balkumar for EBC. They were all fantastic. Whether it was playing ludo/cards together or them cheerleading me through some of the more challenging sections of the trek, I will be forever grateful to these guys for making my experience so special. They were all such wonderful people. They set a nice slow hiking pace and checked my oxygen levels every night to reduce the risk of altitude sickness, but also recognised when I could go a bit further. They took care of everything, so I could just focus on enjoying the trekking! We stayed in great tea houses throughout, and I’d always seem to get the best room on offer. Maybe that’s Dil working his magic! Last thing. You read and hear a lot about poor working conditions and exploitation in Nepal. It was really important to me that this wasn’t the case for my trip and I can confirm that Alpine Ramble treats all its staff fairly. From limits on how heavy the porters’ bags can be, to the 10% that goes to charity, Alpine Ramble seems very ethical. I was delighted to hear that one of my guide’s (very smart) sons was studying Computer Science in the US. It gave me confidence that my money was being fairly distributed. Thank you so much to everyone at Alpine Ramble, I’ll be back one day!

Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan: Small group tour of India

IF YOU’RE VISITING INDIA for the first time as a tourist, I highly recommend taking a small group tour. It’s the perfect way to cope with the (almost) inevitable culture shock and the challenges of booking trains , haggling with autorickshaw drivers, coping with touts, and dealing with the myriad challenges travel in India presents. I also recommend Rajasthan — one of my favourite states, much beloved by travellers. So, as a long-time fan of small group travel company Intrepid Travel, I was thrilled to travel with them on their best-selling Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour from November 26 to December 9, 2019.

Intrepid Travel is my preferred small group travel company because of their philosophy of giving travellers authentic cultural experiences and because they uphold responsible travel practises. They were one of the first companies to ban elephant riding on all their tours, for example. And the Intrepid Foundation supports many worthwhile endeavours in India and elsewhere — such as building school playgrounds.

Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan is a 15-day tour that starts in Delhi, stops in Agra for the Taj Mahal, and then travels through Rajasthan by train and car, hitting some well-known destinations such as Jaipur, Udaipur, and Pushkar — and several fascinating places that are off the beaten path such as Madhogarh Fort, Pangarh Lake Resort, and Bijaipur Castle. There are so many incredible places to visit in Rajasthan !

Along the way we covered both the primary tourist sites such as UNESCO listed Amber Fort, as well as women’s cooperatives, rustic villages, artisan workshops, and other unique places. The Intrepid Travel visits help support the local community — both with donations from the Intrepid Foundation, and through our hotel stays and shopping.

Tour guide Anjali in Old Delhi

Top 5 reasons I loved the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour

I loved the tour for many reasons, but here are the top five:

  • Our guide, Anjali , was incredible. She won the Intrepid Travel Guide of the Year last year, and it is easy to see why. She’s smart, strong, fun, and knowledgeable. On top of her many gifts, she has a deft way of keeping the group together and on track while making it seem effortless.
  • The itinerary was very well-designed to provide a mix of urban and rural, touristy and off-beat, active days and rest days. Again, it seemed effortless, but I know how much thought and work must have gone into crafting the itinerary.
  • The small group size (our group had seven travellers plus guide Anjali), which meant we were agile and manageable. We could eat at small restaurants, we were able to be flexible about the schedule (itinerary permitting), and when we visited artisans, we did not overwhelm them.
  • Intrepid Travel’s commitment to responsible travel was evident throughout the tour. When we visited Amber Fort in Jaipur, we walked to the top and absolutely did not take the elephant rides on offer there. When we went shopping — Rajasthan is a shopper’s paradise! — we went to places that support the local community.
  • The emphasis on local and authentic cultural experiences . Over and over again, we had experiences that were way off the tourist trail. We rode a local train, in general class. We visited local shops in remote places to buy things like bangles, made by a husband-and-wife team. We went camping (glamping, really) on a remote lake and ate fresh, simple, local cuisine. We attended a Bollywood movie at one of the world’s most beautiful cinema halls. And on and on.

Rajasthan tour itinerary

Rajasthan tour itinerary with intrepid travel india.

The Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan small group tour started (and ended) in Delhi.  We stayed in a hotel in Karol Bagh and spent two days exploring Delhi. But of course the VERY first thing we did was meet ‘n greet. Our guide Anjali greeted us and we took turns introducing ourselves. Our group consisted of a couple from France, three Australian women (two were sisters) travelling together, a solo woman from Belgium, and me. That made a cosy and perfect eight in total.

After the meet n’ greet, we went to Kitchen with A Cause for dinner. This was just the first of many activities on the itinerary that supported the local community — and one of the reasons I am so thrilled to be associated with Intrepid Travel, a company known for being a leader in the responsible tourism movement. Kitchen with a Cause trains and employs local youth, and the food is delicious.

Intrepid Travel tour meets on steps in Old Delhi, India

Hello Delhi!

The Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour includes guided walks, and also free time, in Delhi. On our first morning we headed out early, before rush hour, to Old Delhi. It was nice to be out in Delhi in the early morning, I loved the experience. We took the Delhi metro and transferred to cycle rickshaws to get to Jama Masjid, one of the biggest mosques in India. There, we sat on the steps in the morning sun while Anjali gave an informative talk about the history of India and Delhi. She gave everyone a context for what we were about to experience.

Read my Delhi Travel Guide: Things to do in Delhi, and how to do Delhi right here.

We spent the morning wandering the narrow lanes of Old Delhi, including the Chandni Chowk markets, Chawri Bazaar, the beautiful Sheesh Ganj Gurudwara, and stops for breakfast at Paranthe Wale and a tiny chai stand that sold outstanding masala chai.

Later in the day, I took the Urban Adventures Delhi Food Walk along with the French couple that was part of our group. Leader Komal guided us through a market near Delhi University, where we sampled tasty food from about 10 different restaurants and stalls. It was a fun and satisfying experience for many reasons, in spite of a cold, rainy afternoon and a power cut — we ate momos in the dark! I had never explored this part of Delhi, and I loved the street food experience.

TIP: I highly recommend Urban Adventures Delhi tours . I have also taken the Urban Adventures Hidden Gems of Delhi and it was sensational.

Mariellen Ward at Taj Mahal India

Agra and the Taj Mahal

The next morning we met early to take taxis through the centre of Delhi to Nizamuddin Railway station to catch the high-speed Gatimaan Express Train to Agra. We transferred to a mini AC bus, a Tempo, and drove directly to Agra Fort where we met our guide Ravi. Agra Fort is very well preserved, and though I’ve been there several times before, it was still a great experience to hear Ravi’s stories — especially the story of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and how he was imprisoned in the fort for the last years of his life. The ill-fated emperor was doomed to look across the river at the Taj Mahal, the monument to love he built for his wife Mumtaz.

In the afternoon, we went to the Taj Mahal. I’ve been about six times, and there is nothing left to say about the Taj Mahal — you can read my guide to the Taj Mahal here — except it’s fun to watch people as they enter through the massive gate and see it for the first time. It’s so famous, so iconic … and so beautiful, too … that it really wallops people. They can’t believe they are “really here!” and I know the feeling. We were given ample free time to experience the Taj — and take photos of course — and then we met outside the gates at a cafe. It started to pour rain, and we were stuck in the cafe, which was actually fun and cosy.

Agra is not just the home of the Taj Mahal and other historical monuments, it’s also a vibrant, busy city — known for several industries such as shoes, sweets, and carpet making. It’s been an Agra tradition for 400 years to make carpets by hand, using two traditional stitches. We stopped for a demonstration of carpet making, and drank tea in a showroom while several people bought carpets to be shipped home.

Introducing the group to local crafts and places they can shop for quality goods was part of the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan itinerary, and we had similar experiences in several cities. Intrepid knows that tourists like to bring home souvenirs, so they build shopping into the itinerary — and add an educational component to it. All of the places we shopped also support the local community by employing local artisans. Everywhere we went, we spent our money in local restaurants and stores; our money stayed in the local community. Another thoughtful way that Intrepid Travel supports responsible travel principles.

Our dinner in Agra, as in many places on the tour, was at a restaurant carefully chosen to offer delicious food, charming ambience, and high standards in terms of hygiene and infrastructure. I noticed again and again how carefully everything on the itinerary was chosen. We feasted on thalis and tandoori and rich, hearty North Indian cuisine.

The next morning, our Tempo picked us up for the drive to Madhogarh Fort. We travelled by Tempo for five days, and I was very impressed by our driver Sonu. He was a nice person and an excellent driver. He adeptly handled all the craziness of Indian roads — which caused some of my fellow travellers, all new to India, a few heart-stopping moments.

Tip: Don’t sit at the front of the bus unless you’re prepared for a front-row view of the chaos. I sometimes think it’s better not to look. There are so many near-misses … but it always turns out okay. Like so much in India, it doesn’t make any sense but it works.

women wearing traditional clothes in Rajasthan

A real royal fort in Rajasthan

One of the fun things about the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour was the off-beat things we did. In fact, our very first stop in Rajasthan, after crossing the border out of Delhi, was way off the beaten path. We left the highway and drove for an hour or two, way off the tourist trail, into rural Rajasthan to get to Madhogarh Fort. Driving through village after village, we delighted in waving at kids — not used to seeing blonde-haired foreigners.

Finally we reached the hill-top fort, after driving up a winding road that circled the hill. Staff in traditional dress greeted us at the massive doors and led us into the courtyard dining area, where we drank masala chai and met the owner, Shiv Pratap. The Prataps are a noble family that have been associated with the Jaipur royals for hundreds of years. Madhogarh Fort has been in his family for 500 years, and it does carry the romance of age.

I loved it at first sight — it’s exactly my kind of place. Authentic, atmospheric, romantic, and with just enough comfort. They have wisely not modernized it too much. We ate dinner in the courtyard, and the next morning, breakfast on the top of a turret — with a bird’s eye view of the surrounding countryside. We also dressed up in traditional Rajasthani clothing and had our photos taken in a beautifully restored historic room.

While at Madhogarh, we walked through the village and stopped at a government organization to see women weaving on handlooms, and saw an old man spinning cotton on a charkha — the very picture of Gandhi. We also stopped to buy lacquer bangles from a local husband-and-wife team, who make them in a tiny roadside workshop. These are the kinds of local, authentic experiences that Intrepid Travel builds into their itineraries, and that make their trips so memorable — and so supportive of the local community and economy.

View of Amber Fort, Jaipur

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan

After leaving Madhogarh, it was a short drive to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, where we went directly to Amber Fort — one of the jewels of this very rich city. Amber Fort is massive, well preserved, and worth visiting — though it is always busy. It’s a hilltop fort and there are three ways to get up to the top: walk, pay for a jeep ride, or pay for an elephant ride. Thankfully, Intrepid Travel has a global policy against elephant riding, so the entire group opted to walk. It’s really not very far, and you can see the elephants up close as you use the same ramp in some spots.

I already knew the elephants are in bad shape — sick, crippled, blind, over-worked, and unhappy. But it’s awful to see them up close. I stood by the side of the ramp and tried to send a few of them some comforting looks. Read my post on protecting India’s elephants to find out why you shouldn’t ride elephants here or anywhere else, for that matter.

Once inside the fort’s huge courtyard, we met our guide Sanjay Sharma. Sanjay has been a guide for 15-20 years, and Anjali told me she always hires him because he teaches both culture and history, and gives visitors time to explore and take photos. He is a charming man — one of the many excellent guides that Anjali hand-picks for her tours.

In Jaipur for two nights, we had personal time to explore this great city, after an orientation walk through the Pink City — the historic part of the city. We also went shopping at a couple of emporiums, had a rooftop dinner with a view of one of Jaipur’s forts, and went to a Bollywood movie at the Raj Mandir Cinema. Raj Mandir, built in 1971, is one of the world’s most beautiful cinema halls. It is extremely ornate, with a huge auditorium. Some of the group members told me the option to see a Bollywood movie in India was one of their favourite things on the itinerary — one of the deciding factors that led them to book the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour.

Jaipur is a great shopping city — one of the very best in India. The city is famous for a variety of crafts, such as block printing, and it’s the centre of the gem trade and jewelry industry. There are so many beautiful things to buy in Jaipur — it’s a shopper’s paradise in India! But … caveat emptor. Buyer beware. It’s also a very tricky place to shop as, unfortunately, there are a lot of unscrupulous dealers who sell fake goods and rip people off with various scams. Anjali always warns her groups about the scams. And, in general, Intrepid Travel tours try to support shops and businesses that employ locals and benefit the community.

Here are some more suggestions for an incredible Jaipur itinerary .

elephant walking up the ramp at Amber Fort, Jaipur, Rajasthan

Wildlife safari in Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve

I never have enough time in Jaipur, I love all that the city has to offer, but luckily we left for a great destination: Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve . It’s the most popular tiger reserve in India, due to its close proximity to Delhi, photogenic landscapes, and density of tigers. We stayed in nearby Sawai Madhopur, and went on an afternoon game drive in a canter with other people. It was lovely to drive through Ranthambhore, and we did see lots of animals and birds, but no tiger. We definitely came close though, as we heard alarm calls. Our guide felt the tiger was hiding in the forest, and could probably see us!

There was an option to do a second game drive, the following morning, by jeep — and most of the group took it and went back to Ranthambhore. Anjali told me that group members see a tiger about 70% of the time — but it doesn’t really matter, it’s still wonderful to go on a wildlife safari in Ranthambhore. There’s so much to see and experience.

Taragarh Fort or Bundi Palace

Offbeat Bundi and the palace of goblins

From Sawai Madhopur we drove to one of my favourite off-beat places in Rajasthan — Bundi. It’s another stop on the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan itinerary that is both amazing and unusual. The small city of Bundi doesn’t get a lot of tourists, but it definitely deserves a visit. I was in Bundi several years ago and loved it ( here’s what I wrote about Bundi) . I felt I had this historic and evocative town almost all to myself!

In Bundi, we again stayed at a heritage property, Ishwari Niwas, and had yet another great guide, Jogi. This was to be the theme of the trip! Jogi works at Ishwari Niwas and was a fun, relaxed, and informative guide to charming Bundi. He was more like a friend. Anjali is very careful about who she chooses to show us around, in fact she books these people months in advance.

First we saw one of the many step wells in Bundi, Rani ki Baori, and then we went to the Taragarh Fort (also known as Bundi Palace) that towers over the city with a gothic presence that can get your spine tingling. This is the place about which Rudyard Kipling famously said: “… even in broad daylight, is such a palace as men build for themselves in uneasy dreams — the work of goblins rather than of men.”

Walking back through the market, we stopped at Krishna’s Chai shop — proclaimed to be the best masala chai in India. We watched Krishna grind each spice on a well-worn stone, and then happily and enthusiastically boil it together with the tea and milk. It was amazing chai, full of rich, complex flavours, and very warming.

boat docked on Pangarh Lake, Rajasthan

On to Pangarh Lake Resort by local train

The next morning we woke early to catch a local train, and travel by general class, to our next destination. I have taken many trains in India over the last 14 years — you can read my advice about taking trains in India here — but I had never before travelled in general class. This was one of the most truly authentic experiences of the entire trip.

We bundled into the train, which only stopped for about three minutes, and had to find room for us and our luggage, as people were just waking up and still stretched out on the bunks (we were in a sleeper car). It was a bit touch-and-go as some people didn’t want to get up to give us room. But we settled in, and soon I was having my photo taken with just about every child in the coach.

When we reached our destination, a railway station in a remote and rural part of Rajasthan I had never been to before, an open jeep picked us up for the drive to Pangarh Lake Resort. Anjali teasingly told us that we were camping, and were going to be sharing a bathroom — she effectively lowered our expectations so when we saw the resort, we were very pleasantly surprised. It was not camping at all, but glamping! We each had our own luxury tent with spacious attached — and private — bathroom.

I loved the peace and serenity of this lovely place, set on the shores of a small lake. We ate in the dining room and the simple food was fresh and delicious. In fact, it was almost my favourite food of the entire trip. For dinner, we gathered outdoors around a big fire pit near the lake. We ate snacks and drank wine and beer as Anjali took the floor and explained the caste system and also how marriages are arranged. Then they staff BBQ-ed chicken, paneer, and veggies for us over an open fire, and we ate under the stars. It was one of my favourite nights of the trip.

Anjali carefully chose quiet times, while we were travelling or having a drink or snack, to talk about various topics related to Indian culture. She also wove in anecdotes from her personal life to make it relatable and to connect with the group. She covered a wide variety of subjects over the course of her talks, such as history, religion, and customs. I found these talks to be very compelling — she really knows how to hold her audience spellbound!

Mariellen Ward at Castle Bijaipur

Stepping back in time at Castle Bijaipur

The time spent at Pangarh Lake Resort was very relaxing, but the next day we were off again — just a short drive to another property owned by the same family — Castle Bijaipur. I love Castle Bijaipur, I have been there before and was so happy to see it on the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan itinerary! I stopped for one night there during my Mirabai expedition several years ago.

Staying at Castle Bijaipur is like stepping back in time. When you enter the magnificent gate, you enter a different world. The royal family who owns Castle Bijaipur still lives in a wing, and I met several of them — very charming and hospitable people who have wisely not upgraded the castle too much. It’s comfortable but still retains the atmosphere of the past, when chivalry and romance were the order of the day. Castle Bijaipur is a fun place in which to ramble, with lots of secret nooks — and they have a great swimming pool, too.

Our stay at Castle Bijaipur basically warmed us up for the next destination: India’s most romantic city, Udaipur!

Intrepid Travel group on a rooftop in Udaipur

India’s most romantic city — Udaipur

Of all the amazing and magical destinations on the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour, I think I was looking forward to Udaipur the most. I was thrilled we were in Udaipur for two nights, with lots of time to wander in the market, and visit some of the incredible hotels and historic places — starting with a tour of the gorgeous City Palace.

We hit the ground running, and so did our guide CP Bhatt — another fantastic guide, who really brought the culture and history of Udaipur to life. He is a charming man, knowledgeable and friendly — and much much more, as it turned out. After we wandered through the fabulous city palace, CP Bhatt introduced us to the wonders of shopping in Udaipur.

Udaipur is another great shopping destination due to the skill and variety of artisans and crafts. Our first stop was a store called Lord and Taylor (no, not the same as the New York one!). Here, they sell gorgeous textiles made by local women. In fact, it is CP Bhatt himself who tours the local villages looking for talented women who can become part of this women’s cooperative. This is one store I highly recommend — I loved the merchandise. Block print, hand-stitched, applique, patchwork — so many beautiful things made by hand. And shopping here supports women, the local economy, and contributes to the preservation of local skills.

But we did much more than shop in Udaipur. We took a sunset boat cruise on Lake Pichola, watched a very entertaining dance program, Darodhar, at the highly evocative Bagore ki Haveli on Gangur Ghat, and ate both our dinners on rooftop restaurants overlooking the lake and the world’s most photographed hotel — the Lake Palace Hotel, which was originally built as a summer pleasure palace for the Maharana of Udaipur. We also went to a workshop to learn about Udaipur’s long-standing tradition of miniature painting.

However all good things must come to an end, and we got up very early again for a train ride to the last stop on our tour — the sacred town of Pushkar. This time, we had chair car seats on a good train, and enjoyed the comfort and the opportunity to buy chai and snacks.

Pushkar Lake in Rajasthan

Serene and sacred Pushkar

Our last stop on the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour was another favourite destination of mine, the peaceful, small town of Pushkar. Tiny Pushkar has a big soul. It has the only Brahma Temple in India and a sacred lake that is both beautiful and serene. It’s one of those places in India that vibrates with spiritual energy — if you are open to feeling it. (Except perhaps when it is overrun with tourists during the annual Pushkar Camel Fair .)

We had lunch at our hotel and then Anjali led us on an orientation walk through the lively market that wraps itself around the lake, behind the temples and ghats. By now, our group was working like a well-oiled machine, and I was continuing to appreciate Anjali and all she brought to the experience — as well as her skill at holding and leading the group. Whenever she spoke, everyone listened with wrapt attention.

Pushkar is a sacred city, which means no meat or alcohol is allowed there. The group made a few jokes about how it was not exactly a fun way to end the trip — but it turned out to be a perfect way to end the trip. On our last night, we had another incredible local experience — we went for dinner at a homestay and ate the local (vegetarian) cuisine. It was delicious and it was an ideal way to end the trip, by really experiencing the authentic culture and genuine hospitality of India.

The following day, we had some free time before we boarded a train back to Delhi. I got down at Jaipur to explore the city some more … part two of my Rajasthan odyssey coming soon!

Summary of Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour

Overall, I would honestly give the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour a solid A, mostly for the five reasons I outlined at the top:

  • our guide, Anjali
  • the well-planned itinerary
  • the small group size
  • Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel
  • all the authentic and local experiences

I liked almost everything about it and can recommend the Intrepid Travel Classic Rajasthan tour without hesitation. I think it’s probably especially good for first time visitors to India, a good travel group for solo travellers, and for anyone who wants a tour of Rajasthan. I found out from personal experience how much thought and care Intrepid Travel puts into their itineraries and tours.

All of the other people on the tour were visiting India for the first time, and the itinerary was designed to gradually introduce them to the culture. Someone like me, who lives in India and who has travelled for years here, would obviously feel more comfortable and be immediately ready for a deep-dive into local experiences. So, having said that, and from my perspective, here are my suggestions for change:

  • The hotel in Delhi, where we started the tour, was very basic and uninspiring, and also in an area that I don’t love — Karol Bagh. The Delhi experiences were mostly in Karol Bagh and Old Delhi. We didn’t venture at all into all the areas of Delhi I love, such as South Delhi, Lodhi Road, Mehrauli, Hauz Khas etc. Anyone who only did this tour and the Food Walk would have a very limited idea of all that Delhi has to offer.
  • The shopping, dining, and hotel experiences in Jaipur were underwhelming. I know Jaipur well and I wish we had gone to better shops and restaurants, and stayed in a haveli hotel. Actually, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the rooftop restaurant where we had dinner — except that it was patronized only with other foreign travel groups. It was probably fine for the others, but for me it was a bit of a letdown. I would have preferred a more local experience. (Except having said that, I must admit the food and the view were fantastic.)
  • We rode many trains and buses, and had to sometimes scramble a bit for seats. I wonder if a system of rotating seat assignments would help make this process easier.

NOTE: Thanks so much to Intrepid Travel for hosting me on this trip. I have long wanted to travel with Intrepid, as I know and respect the company, and I was thrilled that my experience lived up to my expectations. All of my thoughts and opinions about the tour are my own, and I wrote this post with the needs of readers in mind.
