Safari 11 error with Google logout/sign-in

Safari 11 is not working properly with Google logout/sign-in. Before the update to Safari 11, I used to be able to log out of one google account, select another google account to sign into, and be immediately signed in. Now, I get Forbidden Error 403 when I sign in to the other account. I cannot just refresh the window to get to the second account. I have to use the search bar to reenter my destination google page, which then opens signed in to the other account.

Do you happen to have an iOS Device whose bookmarked sites in Safari

have populated some of the macOS version of Safari? ~ Some Mac OS X

users (including me) have found these site links, from iOS Safari, export

their Mobile (Gmail Logins, etc) bookmark page version into the Desktop.

And these do cause issues, and may be hard to resolve. Part of this also

includes the login-logout buttons in Gmail re-directing you to 'Google+

Discovery' pages; and where isn't a log-in or log-out to be found, either.

An upgrade and proximity to an iOS Device, caused desktop Safari to get

iOS Safari bookmarks that were imported to the Mac. With Mobile links.

Didn't see where you had this issue, however google has been pushing

their own apps and chrome, android, etc; and they've no mac/gmail app.

And the experience I've had involves Safari 11.0 and logout/sign-in. With

some third party browsers, the Gmail login works, but in page logout will

fail to let you out. This is also a source of page re-direct to Google+.

Thanks for the info. I have found that I can switch accounts within Google with success. Not sure how I got it to work as I think I had tried it before with no success. I can now keep a tab open for my personal Google account and another tab for my art group's Google account simultaneously. So I don't have to do the log-out/log-in dance anymore.

FYI, the High Sierra 10.13 upgrade became available during this discussion. I upgraded and then tried to log out of one and into another Google account again, but with the same result.

I don't use Safari, but in Safari > Preferences > General have you checked to see what option is selected for "Remove History Items"? I would think that would only refer to your web page visiting, not site data/cookies being removed, but maybe it does both and yours is set to remove them after a short period of time? I don't see any other option in Safari preferences that seems relevant to the issue you're facing.

ururk said: No to both. I keep my Safari as unmodified as possible. I did run an AV scan on my mac just to be safe - didn't turn up anything. I kind of doubt it's a keychain thing - feels more like a session expiring thing, except sessions shouldn't expire randomly like they are doing. If I get annoyed by it I suppose I can start snapshotting my cookies/local storage to see what's going on. Another odd thing - seems unrelated - but when signing in to various sites, on some Safari asks if I want to update the password. I'm literally touch ID'g an existing password, and it asks if I want to update my passwords... keychain? Click to expand...

I have the same issue. It started months ago and my “solution” (after trying everything else) was to switch to the Safari Technology Preview. That worked fine until few days ago when it started doing the same thing. Tearing my hair out.

This started happening to me when I upgraded to Safari 15.5. I found a thread on the Apple forums from around the same time as the 15.5 was released which suggested turning off Dev Tools. A couple of people had noticed when they opened it that all their logins were getting reset. Since turning it off I haven't been logged out. Obvs, not a full solution as a wed dev I kind of need dev tools to do my job....

Has anyone tried to enable the Debug Menu as well? From Terminal Code: defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu -bool YES or from Onyx – Parameters – Applications – Safari – Turn on the Debug menu https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html  

That command doesn't toggle the checkbox for me at all if I close safari, run it, and then open safari it doesn't change the state of the checkbox in either direction yes or no.  

The Debug Menu doesn't have a checkbox in Safari. You have to give Terminal Full Disk Access to run the command successfully.

I confirm the problem with cookies/sessions disappearing with a Develop menu enabled. Moreover, I have had this problem at my Intel Macbook since I bought it more than a year ago. Actually I thought I broke something... So after buying a new M1 Pro Macbook I haven't copied any settings. Instead, I set up the system from scratch (mostly because of a different architecture tho). M1 macbook started losing cookies right after I enabled the Develop menu today. I have not changed any options in developer menu yet, was using a Console only. There's a solution: use Safari Technology Preview. This is the browser I was using for the whole past year (solely because of missing cookies in a regular Safari). I hope to get a fix without Technology Preview.

I am also having these issues. I am running macOS Venture 13.3.1 (22E261), MacBook Pro 16" 2019. Uptime 24 days, until I install that "Rapid Security Response" later tonight. I always have at least one tab with running web inspector/developer tools. I've not tried disabling the developer tools, because that would be unacceptable (I would instead just migrate to Firefox, somehow). One thing I have noticed is that when I am logged out of sites (an incident), it's not all sites. It's mostly big sites: Reddit, Twitter, Google, GitHub, Wikipedia, etc. Those will always be logged out whenever an incident occurs, and the only way to know an incident occurred is when I try to load a site and I'm logged out. Other sites seem entirely unaffected: Bing, MacRumors Forums, the internal company admin site, other stuff I'm forgetting. Has anyone else noticed if it's some or all sites you are logged out of? What ISPs are you guys on?

I have the exact same issue. It's been bugging me for at least 3 months now. If I make the "mistake" to turn the developer mode on, I will randomly loose cookies on most of the sites I've logged in. It's definitely a bug since when you turn off develop mode, it won't loose any cookies. I wish I new the exact Safari version that started this bug but I'm sure it is not Ventura related.

If you're clearing your browsing history, it will erase all the cookies. This is a STUPID and UNDESIRABLE action on the part of whoever decided this is what "history" means, but that's what happens on iOS, and I assume they've moved this behavior to Mac OS Safari as well. It happens to me, too, and it's maddening. These used to be, and should always be, separate processes. Clearing History on iOS, when you're iCloud synching between iPhone/iPad and Mac OS, may have similar unwanted consequences. The ecosystem is diseased.

How do i sign out of google on safari.

• Open Safari on your Mac and navigate to Settings > Safari > Passwords & Autofill.
• Toggle the “Autofill Passwords” setting to the Off position.

Once this setting has been turned off, all saved passwords will be removed from your Safari browser and will need to be re-entered for them to be used again.

How To Sign Out Of Gmail

Gmail offers several ways to sign out of your account, including the standard “log out” option at the top of your screen. You can also go to Settings > Accounts and click on Sign Out. If you’re signed in with a Google account, you’ll want to log out of that one first.

And any other accounts you might have linked to Gmail will need to be logged out as well. When logging out, all your messages are deleted from Gmail servers, but they won’t disappear right away. Instead, they’re saved in a “sent mail” folder in your Gmail account for 15 minutes before they get permanently deleted.

So if you forget to log out or accidentally leave your browser open while trying to log out, you may find yourself with some unread messages in the sent mail folder.

Why Can’t I Log Out Of Google?

Because of the way Google’s systems are set up, it is impossible to log out of your account. When you sign in to Google, all the information from your previous login sessions is saved on their servers. This means that even if you close your browser, open a new one and sign in again, all the information about your previous sessions will still be there.

Because of this, Google can easily link all your passwords together by using a single sign-in token or cookie. This means that they’re able to track every single action you take while logged into their service and continue doing so even if you change browsers or devices. Google doesn’t make it clear when they’re saving this information, so it’s easy to forget that they have access to it even after closing your browser.

This can lead to unnecessary security risks such as sharing passwords with friends or family members.

How Do I Logout Of Google On My Ipad?

Google has designed its service to be accessible from anywhere and on any device. As such, it makes sense to logout when you’re finished with your session. However, if you’ve enabled two-step verification, then you will have to enter in a code sent to your phone or email before logging out.

Although this is a good security precaution, it can be inconvenient if you’re relying on a mobile device while you’re at work or school. If you’re a frequent Google user, then consider using a secondary browser or switching devices.

iOS 18 rumored to have a mysterious Safari Browsing Assistant feature

Apple is a few months away from introducing the new features it will be including in iOS 18 at WWDC 2024. As the rumor mill ramps up ahead of the event, two new features have surfaced that could improve how users browse the internet.

According to Nicolas Alvarez on X, the features are titled "Safari browsing assistant" and "Encrypted visual search." Alvarez doesn't go into detail about the features of each, but does say that they each appear to use the Private Relay infrastructure to send data to Apple.

Though actual details of the features remain unknown, the names do at least offer some hint as to what they could be.

The Safari Browsing Assistant could is naturally linked to Safari itself, but the name may mean some sort of intelligent help could be summoned for users trying to accomplish tasks. Since Apple has been working on AI and machine learning, there's a good chance the technologies will be in play here.

The other, Encrypted Visual Search, could be an evolution of existing search systems available in its operating systems. For example, Spotlight does allow for the content of images to be found, while Visual Look Up offers more information about items detected in images.

Alvarez is uncertain as to what exactly is being changed with Encrypted Visual Search, other than "better privacy" for users. However, Visual Search has also been mentioned in visionOS , albeit not used in the software itself.

It's also entirely plausible that it could be Apple attempting to provide an image-based search system, similar to the function in Google Image Search. But, since Apple doesn't want to offer a full-blown search engine to the public just yet, this seems a little doubtful.

Other recently discovered features include Apple Maps routes , a redesign inspired by visionOS, and more home screen customizations .

iOS 18 May Feature All-New 'Safari Browsing Assistant'

iOS 18 will apparently feature a new Safari browsing assistant, according to backend code on Apple's servers discovered by Nicolás Álvarez . MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the code exists, but not many details are known at this time.

Update: Álvarez has since said that iCloud Private Relay might not be related to this feature.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.

Álvarez also uncovered a so-called "Encrypted Visual Search" feature in the backend code on Apple's servers, but no specific details are known. MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year discovered a new Visual Search feature for Apple's Vision Pro headset in visionOS beta code, which would allow users to copy and paste printed text from the real world into apps and more, but the feature has yet to launch. It is possible that Apple is planning to debut a more secure version of the feature. However, the code could also relate to the iPhone's existing Visual Look Up feature that can identify objects in photos and videos.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so we should learn more about these potential new features in a few more months.

Code uncovered by X user Nicolás Álvarez and confirmed by MacRumors reveals that Apple is working on something called a “Safari browsing assistant” with “encrypted visual search.”

As pointed out by Álvarez, this suggests that Safari’s AI assistant may use Apple’s Private Relay feature , which is only available to iCloud Plus subscribers. Details are still slim on Apple’s plans to bring AI to the iPhone, but it could involve either Google or OpenAI .

Apple is widely expected to add several generative AI features to the iPhone via the upcoming iOS 18 update. Rumors point to both on-device and cloud-based AI features coming to iPhones. The iPhone 16 models might get exclusive AI tricks that could make use of the new A-series chips, so they won’t be available on older iPhone models.

Nothing is confirmed at the moment. But Apple did say multiple times that it’s taking generative AI seriously, teasing announcements for later this year. Separately, Apple researchers have published various papers detailing the company’s various AI advancements.

With that sort of background information, nobody would blame you if you think Safari Browsing Assistant is some sort of new AI feature that Apple might have devised for iOS 18, especially now. We’re about two months away from WWDC 2024. That’s where Apple will reveal most of the AI features it can talk about without spoiling iPhone 16 secrets.

On that note, I do expect Siri to get an AI revamp in iOS 18 . And I hope generative AI will make it a more dependable assistant.

According to MacRumors , two independent sources discovered references to a new Safari Browsing Assistant. Nicolas Alvarez found it in the backend code on Apple’s servers, and MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the reference exists.

This feature doesn’t appear to be connected to Visual Look Up , but maybe that’s exactly what it is.

I said before that I expect Apple to lead the way when it comes to privacy protections for genAI features in iOS 18. On-device AI features will process data on the iPhone, so privacy and security should be guaranteed for those.

However, cloud-based AI features will need an internet connection, as data needs to be sent to Apple’s servers. Or a third party if Google’s Gemini infrastructure will handle cloud-based AI features. Apple would also have to implement strong privacy and security features for that data.

We’ll know more in June when Apple holds its WWDC keynote. Until then, I’d expect some iOS 18 AI features to leak. Maybe this mysterious Safari Browsing Assistant will reappear in rumors soon enough.

iOS 17.5 expands Puzzles collection with leaderboards and new ‘Quartiles’ word game

Following the addition of crosswords in iOS 17, Apple News+ is expanding its catalog of games as part of iOS 17.5 . Starting with iOS 17.5, there is a new game called “Quartiles” available in the News app, which prompts players to select from a grid of tiles to form words.

The addition of Quartiles was first spotted by Gadget Hacks , which has an in-depth rundown on how exactly the game works.

You start with 20 tiles in a grid and combine them to form words of one, two, three, or four tiles. Each puzzle has five quartiles, each of which gives you 8 points. Find all five to net a 40-point bonus for a total of 80 points. You also get one point for one-tile words, two for two-tile words, and four for three-tile words. After you build a word on the Quartiles board, tap the checkmark button to score it. If it’s not a valid word, it will tell you. You can use a shuffle button to scramble the tiles, giving you a fresh perspective.

Quartiles is the third game to come to Apple News+, following the daily crossword and crossword mini games that were added last year. Gadget Hacks also notes that iOS 17.5 also adds Game Center integration to all three of the Apple News+ games. With this feature, you can now see leaderboards for each of the three games for Daily Solve Time and Daily Score stats.

You can find the games in the News app by going to the “Following” tab and tappiing the “Puzzles” option. It’s only available to Apple News+ subscribers, and Apple News+ is only available in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. Apple News+ puzzles are even more limited in availability and are only available in the United States and Canada.

9to5Mac’s Take

Apple really needs to redesign the Apple News app to make these puzzles more discoverable. With the new Apple Sports app, do we still need a dedicated “Sports” tab in the Apple News app? At the very least, let me customize the toolbar to replace Sports with Puzzles.
