Odd question: Frame Plugs

trek frame hole plugs

  • Add to quote

I just converted my Fuel EX8 29er to 1x10 and the big hole in the top tube for the front derailluer cable bugs me. Has anyone seen any kind of plugs for the internal cable routing holes when they're not being used?

I have a Superfly FS 9 and was thinking about doing the same thing. I would also want to plug the unused cable routing hole to keep trail debris from working its way in. My bike has dropper post internal routing near the bottom rear of the seat post tube. It's unused and came pre-plugged from the factory, so I would think the plugs should be available.

A Trek Dealer can get them. If they aren't sure, have them look under Frame Parts on their system. They are in there. After some digging we were able to get them. I just converted my 2013 Slash 9 to a 1X, and popped them in with no problem. They kind of wedge themselves in, and I haven't had any issue with them since. Careful, there are a few different designs for the different models that Trek makes. It's a warranty part so it might take your dealer a bit of searching to get them. Certainly worth a beer while they search the ordering system for you.

I owe my LBS a beer. Hope he likes Guinness or IPA.

Thanks JMUSuperman, called the local Trek Store and they are on the way.

Can someone post pics when they have them installed? I have a new Giant Anthem Carbon and went to 1x11 and have same issue. I don't believe Giant carries frame plugs for these.

trek frame hole plugs

When I went 1X on my Remedy 9.8 I used a small piece of 2228 tape cut into an oval so it has no square edges. Also put a piece over the hole for the front derailer screw to keep crud out. Works great.

Good idea, but it was worth the $2.00 for the actual Trek part IMO.

Aircraft White Aviation Airplane Aerospace engineering

My local Trek dealer barely understood what I was asking for re: the derailleur plate, he didn't even look in the system. I saw the Ibis plate in an article on Bike Rumor, also found a guy making them on a 3D printer but he wanted 3 times as much.

Thanks. Just ordered one off the Ibis site. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

FB17: Problem Solvers plugs frame holes with Bubs, adds Boosters, MisMatch 2.2, plus new gear from MSW

trek frame hole plugs

Modern adventure bikes include a  lot of braze-ons. If you need them, they serve as important attachment points for bottle cages, Anything cages, fenders, racks, and more. If you don’t need them though? It’s getting to the point where all those unused screws start to add up.

Sure, you could just remove them, but then you’re leaving a bunch of small holes open to the elements which probably won’t do much for your frame’s longevity. As usual, Problem Solvers is here with a solution. Their new rubber Bubs will fill those holes while also cutting down on the weight…

trek frame hole plugs

Made from rubber in a size to fit standard braze-on holes, each plug is 10mm long and according to PS – offers “dummy proof installation… probably.” That’s because you simply push them into the hole. The friction fit will hold them in place, but they can be removed in the future to use the braze-on if needed. Sold  for $7.99 in a bag of 10.

trek frame hole plugs

Problem Solvers is also getting into the Boost adapter game with their Boosters. The simple kits include rear and front specific adapters which include rotor and hub spacers. Since the spacers simply sit next to a non-Boost hub on the axle, the kit will work with any hub. The rear kit uses one 6mm spacer for the non-driveside and a 6mm spacer for the rotor with hardware. This requires the rear wheel to be dished 3mm to the non-driveside to compensate for the spacer.

The front kit instead uses two 5mm spacers, one for either side of the hub, and a 5mm rotor spacer with hardware. The kit also includes Torque caps for compatible RockShox forks. Both kits sell for $24.99 each.

A new addition to the MisMatch family, the 2.2 is designed to mount Shimano I-Spec II shifters to a SRAM Match-Maker brake lever clamp. Sold as a pair for $40, they are also available in right hand only.

QBP’s accessory brand MSW is always close by when Problem Solvers is around, and this year they were showing a few new flat packs which include a lot of what you will need in a mechanical. Priced at $49.99, you’ll get 2 18g co2 cartridges, an inflator head, three tire levers, 8 function multi tool, patch kit, and a 50 cu in. seat pack to store it in.

trek frame hole plugs

MSW also has a full new line of bar tape in multiple colors, and three styles. The standard EVA foam tape goes for $9.99, the Anti-Slip Gel tape adds a gel backing and PU gripper for $19.99, and the Anti-Slip Gel + adds a micro-fiber layer to the mix for their high end tape at $24.99.

Bubs – what a perfect name. Every cross bike should come with those, won’t scratch you like bolts.

Nice to see reasonably priced bar tape. I prob haven’t seen $10 bar tape in 15 years.

shafty

Made me think of lil Bub, the cat! Unassuming bar tape, with the logo on the plug instead, is great too.

Chris

I’ve long used nylon bolts to fill unwanted braze-ons. Weight next to nothing and you can get them for 1/8 the price of the Bubs. If you want a more low profile option use grub screws.

Nice seeing reasonably priced bar tape for a change.

Aaron

Nylon bolts are what I was going to suggest, too. They’re super light, and WAY cheaper than these things. Obviously, they also don’t rust like steel bolts. And considering you may not remove a bolt for months or years, it’s a good way to prevent them from getting stuck due to corrosion.

boom

Trek has been selling pretty sleek plastic braze-on fillers for a few years now

Seraph

Yeah but they all have the Trek logo on them. Not everyone wants the shield all over his or her bike.

Jonathan cobb

I just fill the braze on holes with the appropriate size stainless steel grub screws and some tread lock. 0.99p (UK) on eBay for 30.

Mike

I use nylon screws, but yours is smawt!

neologisticzand

What size screw do you need?

Jeff

Nylon screws, pkg. of 100 will last you and your buddies for awhile.

If you swap out every bolt on a Troll or ECR, these will save you 3.2 lbs. Fact.

Jeb

Hahahaha. 1cm square piece of electrical tape.

Looks super sloppy.

Moscow parks – leisure, nature and historical

Moscow is the most green megapolis in the world. There are over a hundred parks and green spaces like gardens, squares and boulevards. You will definitely bump into a few of them wherever you go. Whether you are interested in memorial, historic parks, parks of wildlife or you just want to have a calm break from the speedy city life – city parks have something special for everyone.

Moscow leisure parks

The leisure Moscow parks are undoubtedly the most popular and famous with the locals and travelers. Today such parks provide a great number of exciting entertainments for Muscovites and city guests, adults and children.

The Gorky Park

The Gorky Park

Gorky Park opened in 1928 and was the first holiday park in the Soviet Union with playgrounds, a sports stadium, exhibition halls and attractions for kids. Today it has a fresh, vibrant appearance. The park features bike rental stations, a comfortable business area with Wi-Fi, an outdoor movie theatre and a greenhouse where you can buy fresh greens such as basil and lettuce. To contemplate the sky and the stars, go to the observatory and look through the telescope while listening to fascinating stories from astronomers. Enjoy many sports in the park: volleyball, handball, football or a peaceful jog around the beautiful surroundings.

Zaryadye Park

Opened in September 2017, Zaryadye is the youngest on our list. Located just a few minutes away from Red Square, it includes various activities like the floating bridge with its thin V-form extension, an ice cave, also concert hall and an amphitheater. The entire territory of the park was divided into four zones of Russia: forest, steppe, tundra, and the floodplains.

The park mostly consists of pristine forest, dotted with old summer pavilions, ponds and quaint little stone bridges. There are a lot of opportunities for different activities lots of children playground, a ping-pong and chess clubs, football fields and tennis courts, horse riding, tree climbing and having rest in one of the nice cafes.

Sara Bernar, Maria Yermolova, outstanding actresses, played in the open air performances. Tolstoy and Lenin had a stroll in the garden. So lots of celebrities from different epoques liked it a lot and spent their time in Hermitage Garden. You can find here three theatres in the garden: Hermitage, Sphere and New Opera. During winter an ice rink works here and in summer a musical stage is assembled to host jazz and brass band festivals.

Aptekarsky Ogorod

Aptekarsky Ogorod (Apothecary Garden)

Aptekarsky Ogorod (Apothecary Garden)

Aptekarsky Ogorod (Apothecary Garden) is one of the oldest gardens in Moscow. It was founded in the XVIII century by Peter the First (great Russian emperor). A larch that he planted himself still grows in the garden, so it’s more than 250 years old. At the time of its foundation, it was a garden with herbs and medicinal plants and was used as an educational center for doctors. Today there are the orangery with its tropical palms, the carp pond, and the immense trees that dot the landscape and turn wonderful golden shades in the autumn. Several restaurants and cafes work here making it a very nice spot for relaxation no matter what season it is. You can book a special tour or join the guided excursion group.

Losiny Ostrov

Losiny Ostrov (Elk Island Park)

Losiny Ostrov (Elk Island Park)

Losiny Ostrov (Elk Island Park) is located at the north of Moscow. It covers 22 km from the west to the east and 10 km from the north to the south and it’s one of the most beautiful national parks in Moscow. Two rivers, Yausa and Pechorka begin here. You can choose a guided tour about flora and fauna of the area, you’ll learn why elks are there, which animals are their neighbors. Or enjoy another excursion, which is totally devoted to historical past of ancient tribes once lived there, you’ll know about old Russian mythology, rituals and traditions.

Serebyany Bor

trek frame hole plugs

Serebyany Bor (Silver Forest)

Serebyany Bor (Silver Forest) is a famous pine forest in the west of Moscow. The park has 230 forms of plant life, and is also home to watersports complex, providing a lot of activities for visitors. The layout of Serebryany Bor is unusual, as it is located on an artificial island between a meander in the Moscow River and a channel. There is an artificial lake, the Deep Gulf and picturesque Bezdonnoe (Bottomless) Lake in the depths of the forest. Serebryany Bor’s beaches are the cleanest in the city and very popular among Muscovites. On weekends it is difficult to find a free spot here, especially because a whole range of services are offered to visitors, from simple deckchairs to catamaran and yacht rides. Driving is prohibited on the territory of the island so be ready to use trolleybus to reach the entrance.

Botanichesky Sad

Greenhouse of Botanical Garden

Greenhouse of Botanical Garden

Main Botanical Garden of The Russian Academy of Sciences is the largest and most famous is Moscow. The garden is a real museum of nature with a very rich (more than 18000 types) collection of plants. The park was founded in 1945 at the place of the 17th century Apothecaries’ Gardens. The garden’s collection is turned into botanical expositions, made with use of modern receptions of landscape architecture. Here you can see a tree nursery, a shadow garden, hothouse complex, collection of flowers, a rosary, exposition of coastal plants, garden of continuous blossoming, Japanese garden and expositions of cultural plants and natural flora plants. The biggest part of Garden is the Tree nursery occupying the space of 75 hectares. About 2 thousand wood plants grow here. Another big exposition of the Garden is nature Flora, divided into six botanic-geographical collections: European part of Russia, Caucuses, Central Asia, Siberia and Far East. Pride of the Main Botanical Garden is the collection of tropical, coastal and water plants, which is considered as the best in Europe. The Japanese garden, a great model of Japanese landscape gardening art has a 13-level stone pagoda of the 18th century, stone Japanese lamps, ponds, falls and streams, tea lodges and more than 100 species of the most character Japan plants. It is especially decorative in spring, during Oriental cherry blossoming and in fall, when foliage blazes in crimson colors.

Moscow historic parks

Historic nature parks and estates once were the mansions of the Moscow aristocracy. At that far times the estates were outside the Moscow city limits, but after the city expansion and urbanization, they became easily accessible.

Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoye Museum and Park

The chief attraction of the park is undoubtedly the stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord. It was constructed in 1532 by order of Tsar Vasily III to commemorate the birth of his son and heir, Ivan the Terrible. But there is a lot more to see in the park: the pretty Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan – with its bright azure domes and plenty of gold. Further into the park there is a charming Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, built by Ivan the Terrible to mark his coronation.

Kuskovo

Kuskovo Park

Kuskovo Park is one of the oldest country estates in Moscow. It was given to General Sheremetev by Peter the Great in 1715, but was left to fall into neglect before being plundered by Napoleon’s troops in 1812. Nowadays the estate has been restored to its former glory and is a good example of Russian 18th Century imperial architecture. The palace is a fine and rare example of wooden neoclassicism. It was completed in 1775, and the rich interiors remain unchanged since 1779. It includes a room hung with exclusive exquisite Flemish tapestries, an abundance of silk wallpaper and an impressive collection of 18th century European and Russian paintings. The palace looks onto the lake, which is surrounded by smaller pavilions: pretty Italian, Dutch and Swiss Cottages, Blank’s Hermitage and the old Orangery, where the State Ceramics Museum is located now, an extensive and absorbing collection of porcelain from the 18th century to the present day. On the other side of the lake is a large wood popular with local cyclists and joggers.

Moscow Palace of Soviets – Soviet architectural giant

3 Comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Architecture , History , Photos

Moscow Palace of Soviets is one of the most famous unfinished architectural projects in history. The huge (the biggest and tallest in the world) building would have become the symbol of the victory of socialism, the symbol of a new country and new Moscow . This project is still amazing in our day.

Moscow Palace of Soviets 1

The idea of building the Palace of Soviets was proposed by Sergei Kirov at the First Congress of Soviets, December 30, 1922 (also this Congress announced the establishment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). The idea found the widest support among the delegates.

Moscow Palace of Soviets 3

But the realization of the idea began almost ten years later when in June 18, 1931 in the newspaper “Izvestia” open competition to design the Palace of Soviets was declared. In the same year, December 5, the symbol of old Russia – Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior was blown to clear the place for the new symbol of the Soviet Union. The cathedral was visible from almost anywhere in Moscow in early thirties. New architectural symbol was supposed to be visible from any place in Moscow.

Moscow Palace of Soviets 6

As a result, five groups of architects became the finalists of the contest. The group of Boris Mikhailovich Iofan won the contest. The project of Iofan did not immediately take the form familiar to all lovers of architecture of the Stalin era. The first sketch in 1931 was as follows:

Moscow Palace of Soviets 9

And this is not a sketch but a more detailed version of the project of Iofan also dated 1931

Moscow Palace of Soviets 10

In 1932, the Palace of Soviets became a little more like the final draft

Moscow Palace of Soviets 11

Almost the final version, dated 1933, but still without Lenin but with the liberated proletariat on the roof

Moscow Palace of Soviets 12

The project taking more familiar form

Moscow Palace of Soviets 13

And finally the version approved in 1939

Moscow Palace of Soviets 14

The 316-meter palace was to be crowned by the 100-meter statue of Lenin. The total area of the building was to be 11 hectares, and weight – one and a half million tons. Before the World War II the base of high-altitude part of the Palace was built, the construction of steel frame started. After June 22, 1941 concrete, granite, steel and other construction materials were required for completely different purposes.

After the war several skyscrapers of less size were built in Moscow. The foundation of the Palace was used during the construction of the world’s largest swimming pool. And in the nineties the Cathedral of Christ the Savior demolished in December 1931 was restored on the same foundation.

And what would it be a great view if this building was built after all!

Very interesting article! I would love to use some of the images for an academic publication (in particular Moscow Palace of Soviets 2 and 3). Would it be possible to know the sources of those images? Thank you very much.

Journey to Moscow

Welcome to Moscow - the capital of Russia, its political, scientific, historical, architectural and business centre, from which power and might of the Russian state developed.

The BackPackers

How to get free WiFi in Moscow

Moscow is the largest city of Russia and holds a prominent place in the country as the main economic, cultural, political andresearch centre.

There couldn’t be a better spot to spend your vacations than the artful city of Moscow; the reasons being many but the major one for being among one of the cities where free WiFi connections are blessed. The city being vastly connected to the World through various international airports and railways has an amazingly extensive internet connection around the city for the tourists who might want an access to the media zone as well as to their social network, but would appreciate to cut back on those awful internet charges, while delighting in the beauties of this city like Moscow Kremlin orIntourist Hotel Volgograd.

Moscow had been ranked as one an alpha global city streaming with countless tourists all-round the year, hencefinding free WiFi is not as difficult as it might sound. The capital of Russia has been conveniently blessed with 1178 free WiFi hotspots including various restaurants, coffeehouses, pubs, hotels; and quite surprisingly yet delightfully enough, these free WiFi connections are in access to public transportation, parklands, Moscow metro buses and many such open places where tourists and locals alike, pass through frequently and would want to enjoy their meals or coffees while posting check ins and photos for their Facebook circle!

Mosscow wifi train

The main internet service provider within the entire city is Beeline, Megafon and MTS. If curious about the connection’s security with respect to your personal details, for that is quite natural, have a look at the related websites and find out the best tariffs.

However, in the historical Moscow city, free wireless connections is operative only through the Beeline which is readily spread in many areas of the city. The only effort you need to put in is connect to the internet by the name of “Beeline WiFi” or “Beeline WiFi WPA “and experiment around a bit like putting up your laptop on the window-sill for a few minutes, orswinging around the mobile phone in blank airuntil you start getting a stable reception; and you’re all good to go. Beeline WiFi is the only service provider if you are travelling a bus or a trolleybus, which is quite common in Russia. Moreover, 300 routers providing free internet access have been allocated on public transportation. Another free WiFi arrangement could be leisurely enjoyed while moving in and out of the city through Moscow’s underground Metro system. As of now, MTS has taken the initiative to equip four out of fourteen  Moscow metro stations in the city, erasing off all that weariness of a subway, and what’s more; the data transfer is estimated to be more than 100Mb/s per train!

Fortunately, there are various places in Moscow covered soundly with commercial WiFi network, where you could freely relax, sipping on those savory Mors with your laptop connecting you to the social webs or checking up on your mails and letting you keep track of this fast-paced modern world that would definitely help in easily recording and creating a memorable travelogue.
