Recent tour reviews

I haven't seen JJ Grey & Mofro in 12 or 13 years, and they have only gotten better with age! JJs voice is so strong and rich, and the band play as a cohesive unit. The jamming was great fun without going on forever.

The only thing the concert lacked was more time!!! They were a great opening act, but Chicago needs to see them headline!!!!

I didn't know how well known they would be known here in Chicago, but the crowd was on its feet singing along; I'd say that they could fill a theater for more than one night.

Please come back to Chicago, JJ & Mofro!!!!!

Another fantastic JJ Grey & Mofro experience! JJ brought his typical enthusiastic, energetic presence to the stage. All the guys were dressed sharp and ready to play in this fairly new, unique venue. Acoustics were good, lighting was good. Great Lochloosa, Brighter Days and Sun is Shining (Glory, Glory, Hallelujah). Added a cover of Seminole Wind on the sitdown guitar....very enjoyable. Also added a cover of Hey Jude....got the crowd involved. I have always enjoyed seeing him live and love having the ability to do so in small, personal venues.

Saturday night shows typically start late, end later, and this was no exception. JJ Grey and Mofro didn't start playing until 10:30pm, so I was a bit agitated and I suppose I am showing my age by wanting an earlier show.

Opener Luther Dickinson was boffo, with a surprise appearance by Amy Helm. It was just Luther and a drummer, who also played the guitar while sitting at his drumkit. He is a great showman, and he brought his A-game, slide guitar, vocals, the man is great.

JJ Grey's voice is amazing, and he was in top form. I was surprised to see that guitarist Trube was not on stage, I later learned that he left Mofro to pursue his own band. The replacement was good, and I was surprised to see JJ play many guitar solos himself!

There were a few extended jam sessions, which surprised me but it in no way disappointed me. His record tracks are short and sweet. I LOVED "Ho Cake", each band member took turns soloing. And wow! Just wow!

The Capitol Theater is a great venue, all in all a wonderful Saturday night show!

JJ Grey and Mofro

From his early days playing cover music behind chicken wire at a west side Jacksonville juke joint while still working at a lumberyard, to playing sold-out shows at some of the largest venues and music festivals in the world, JJ Grey has always delivered his soul-honest truths. Since his first album, Blackwater , back in 2001, Grey has been releasing deeply moving, masterfully written, funkified rock and front porch Southern soul music. Now, with Olustee – his tenth album and first in eight years, and the first he has self-produced – Grey is back, singing his personal stories with universal themes of redemption, rebirth, hard luck, and inner peace. With his music, Grey also celebrates good times with friends, oftentimes mixing the carnal with the cerebral in the very same song. Fueled by his vividly detailed, timeless original songs spun from his life experiences, Grey’s gritty baritone drips with honest passion and testifies with a preacher’s foot-pounding fervor.

The search for one’s identity is a lifelong process that every individual must go through. Who someone is today, is not the person they were yesterday nor who they may be tomorrow. Despite those changes, there is a general idea of a defined sense of self.  No matter what happens, it is that small yet solid and grounding definition of self that continues to drive us forward in our search for identity and whatever may come with it. It would be difficult to find any artist who understands that better than the band Lucero.

Since forming in Memphis in the late 90’s, Lucero’s base musical hallmarks have remained similar to the band’s initial sound established with their first record The Attic Tapes . As expected of any band built to survive, Lucero has welcomed change over the course of their career, but it has always been on their terms.  The band’s twelfth album, Should’ve Learned by Now , began its life as hardly more than some rough demos and lingering guitar parts.

The Allman Betts Band

When The Allman Betts Band released Down to the River in June of 2019, the debut album represented not only the first time the group had recorded together, but, in fact, the first time the seven-piece ensemble had ever played together.  If Down to the River was the sound of the band’s combustible sparks igniting, then Bless Your Heart is their bonfire, built for the summer of 2020 and beyond; a double-album follow-up fueled by road-forged camaraderie and telepathic musical intensity, vibrantly reflecting the individual and collective experiences of these seven, all drawing inspiration from the band’s symbolic hometown- a place Devon Allman calls “the United States of Americana.”

In 2019, as Down to the River topped charts and dotted playlists, The Allman Betts Band toured.  Relentlessly.  Sold-out U.S. theatres in spring turned to festival dates in summer, even crossing over the Atlantic for a string of European appearances.  A conflagration of influences and invention, confidence and ambition, Bless Your Heart captures a vast, panoramic scope throughout a baker’s dozen of modern rock.

American Aquarium

Anywhere off Hatteras Island, Chicamacomico sounds made up, like some wine-drunk incantation or maybe a tongue twister—try to say it ten times fast. But as a former life-saving station built in 1874 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the name is perhaps the perfect metaphor and title for American Aquarium’s ninth studio album.

The Old North State is tattooed on the bones of front man BJ Barham, who has never lived more than two hours from his hometown in Reidsville. But, more so, what better to represent an album about loss than a place built to save the lives of shipwrecked mariners and passengers?

Few songwriters swing the hammer as hard and precise as Barham and it is a testament to the humility and trust of his bandmates that they take the back seat and allow his storytelling to drive us home. With a heavy tour the rest of the year and a backlist of brass-knuckled bangers, each will surely have their fair share of time at the wheel. But as for this record, be thankful for the subtlety, for the stillness and for the quiet. For ten songs, Chicamacomico will hold your head above water.

G. Love & Special Sauce

"I've been in the game a long time, but I've always considered myself a student," says G. Love. "Finishing this album with Keb Mo' felt like graduation." Recorded in Nashville with a slew of special guests including Robert Randolph, Marcus King, and Roosevelt Collier, The Juice is indeed diploma-worthy. Co-produced and co-written with GRAMMY-winning icon Keb Mo,' it's an electrifying collection, one that tips its cap to more than a century of blues greats even as it offers its own distinctly modern pop spin on the genre, mixing programmed beats and hip-hop grooves with blistering guitar and sacred steel.

G. Love's magnetic stage presence, meanwhile, made him a fixture on festival lineups from Bonnaroo to Lollapalooza, and his relentless appetite for tour and collaboration landed him on the road and in the studio with artists as diverse as Lucinda Williams, Dave Matthews, The Avett Brothers, Jack Johnson, and DJ Logic. Life is good for G. Love these days, and he's not taking a moment of it for granted.

“I Just Want To Write And Perform Songs That Touch The Heart And Help Others”. Letting Go Of Genre, Expectation, And Boxes, Satsang Has Leaned Into The Power Of Songwriting To Drive their release, Flowers From The Fray . Recorded And Self-Produced With The Help Of Bandmate And Longtime Collaborator Parker Brown, This Record Finds The Duo Tucked Away In A Secluded Cabin In Southwest Montana Digging Back Into The Foundation On Which Satsang Was Founded On. “These Songs Were All So Personal To Me” Says Drew Mcmanus. “Whether It Was Really Sifting Through The Stage Of Life I Had Found Myself In Which Was A Kind Of Dark Night Of The Soul, Or Leaning Into The Love Of My Wife. This Record Is Truly Me Bearing My Heart. I Needed To Seclude Myself To Find Out Where These Songs Wanted To Go, And Having Parker’s Musical Guidance Had A Big Hand In That.”

Anders Osborne (Duo)

At one point on his 2019 album,  Buddha and The Blues , Anders Osborne sings,  “Oh, it’s a miracle we still care. Oh, it’s so wonderful we’re still here. We’re still here!” He’s not going anywhere either…Osborne’s six-string virtuosity, inventive musicality, and poetic songcraft underpin an ever-expanding three-decade catalog celebrated by fans and critics alike. As a sought-after studio talent, his writing resounds through Keb Mo’s GRAMMY® Award-winning  Slow Down , Tim McGraw’s number one “Watch The Wind Blow By,” and covers by Brad Paisley, Jonny Lang, Edwin McCain, Aaron Neville, and more. His output live and in the studio spans working with everyone from Eric Church, Toots and the Maytals, and John Scofield to The Meters, North Mississippi Allstars, and Galactic. His extensive touring history encompasses gigs, collaborations, and performances alongside everyone from Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, and Stanton Moore to The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh and Jackie Greene. Not to mention, he lights up the screen on an episode of the HBO hit  Treme . Plus, he has garnered acclaim from  USA Today ,  Guitar Player ,  Relix ,  Offbeat , and more.

About Blues Traveler

No matter how much the world around us may change, music persists as the last original magic. It appears seemingly out of nowhere, affecting and altering emotions, feelings, and moods before melting back into the ether.

Blues Traveler always treat this magic with the utmost care. It’s why they continue to resonate as loudly as ever among audiences nearly four decades since their emergence. It’s why their catalog endures, comprising three gold-selling records, one platinum LP, and the 6x-platinum opus Four highlighted by the GRAMMY® Award-winning “Run Around.” It’s why they can still roll through any town on tour and pack a shed or amphitheater. It’s why they even notched their most recent GRAMMY® nod in 2022. It’s also why they tally tens of millions of streams to this day.

Now, the quintet—John Popper [vocals, harmonica], Chan Kinchla [guitar], Tad Kinchla [bass], Ben Wilson [keyboards], and Brendan Hill [drums]—channel the same magic on their fifteenth full-length album, Traveler’s Soul [Round Hill Records/Black Hill Records].

On the record, the group put their spin on R&B and soul staples straight out of the American Songbook, and it’s nothing short of spellbinding…

“Music is the old magic,” smiles Chan. “You can’t recreate a live performance anywhere. It happens once– in the studio or on stage –and it brings everyone together. The songs we chose for Traveler’s Soul move people so much because there are great pockets you can really sink into. You just don’t want to leave.”

These anthems also fit like a glove for Blues Traveler. In 2021, they tackled a batch of blues covers with Traveler’s Blues and wound up with a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best traditional Blues Album.” Maintaining this momentum, the musicians made the decision to dive headfirst into another lane altogether.

“We had so much fun with Traveler’s Blues that we were like, ‘We should try this again with a different style’,” recalls Chan. “We have so many influences, going from hip-hop and blues to pop, rock, and R&B. We wanted to honor Soul and R&B and challenge ourselves by trying our own take on some of our favorites from those genres.”

Recording with GRAMMY® Award-winning producer and Traveler’s Blues cohort Matt Rollings, the boys cut 12 tunes in Nashville, TN, spanning fifties and sixties standards, New Orleans nuggets, and nineties bangers.

The guys introduce this chapter with “Fool For You” originally popularized by The Impressions back in 1968. A wailing harmonica gives way to an understated guitar riff and a heavenly piano melody. This ebb-and-flow underlines a smoldering vocal performance from John backed by a rapturous choir.

“It’s actually got a unique time signature,” Chan says. “The instrumentation we use is different from what’s on the original recording, but it has a modern vibe. It was strangely tricky and definitely a great challenge. We just love the way it turned out.”

Horns swoon across a funky guitar strut on their reimagining of King Floyd’s 1970 hit “Groove Me.” An urgent and undeniable performance thrives on the signature chemistry and unspoken sonic shorthand between the bandmates.

“We jumped on it last-minute since we needed another song,” Chan recalls. “We got it in three takes. It was one of the happiest accidents because we were originally going to do Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’, but we felt like it was a little too deep for a bunch of white kids from Princeton, New Jersey,” he laughs.

They stroll through The Big Easy with a rollicking rendition of Dr. John’s “Qualified” punctuated by ragtime piano, upbeat horns, and slick fretwork. Chan adds, “We knew we needed to do a Dr. John song, because our keyboardist Ben is such a huge fan. We wanted to pick a deeper cut, and ‘Qualified’ fit the bill perfectly.”

A hypnotic groove and thumping bass line power up Blues Traveler’s swaggering take on the Ann Peebles epic “I Can’t Stand The Rain” with Valerie June.

“It’s got a very traditional R&B form in terms of the chord progression, but it eventually flips with this incredible feel,” Chan said.

A dynamic cast of collaborators adds multiple dimensions to Traveler’s Soul. Modern genre stalwart Ryan Shaw lends his vocals to the soaring “When A Man Loves A Woman,” while Clyde Lawrence rolls through for the wah guitar-driven “Just Kissed My Baby.”

Perhaps most surprisingly, they ride a wave of inspiration on TLC’s “Waterfalls,” which unites Blues Traveler with Pat Monahan of Train and up-and-coming hip-hop artist Daisha McBride. Beyond the vocal fireworks and intimate acoustic guitar, Daisha lights up the track with an homage to Lisa Left Eye’s iconic rap.

“She crushed it,” Chan grins. “It was so fun to hear a real rapper on a Blues Traveler song. We brought in the acoustic as opposed to all of the layered production in the original. We opened the door for the Blues Traveler sound. We had just toured with Train, so it was cool to have Pat on there. It brings things full circle. When ‘Run Around’ was big, ‘Waterfalls’ was on MTV back-to-back. The nineties was so weird and great, because you could have TLC followed by Blues Traveler. We’d do radio shows, and our trailer would be next to theirs. When you’ve been doing this as long as we have, you’re actually around for some of the classics!”

Inspired and invigorated by this season, Blues Traveler will continue cooking up their own classics as well.

“All of these songs have a life of their own,” Chan leaves off. “It’s magical to see what music can turn into if you’re open and creative. We learned so much by taking these songs apart and seeing how these great musicians write. It was a masterclass in songwriting, and it will definitely influence where we go next. We’ve grown, and 36 years on, that’s a great thing.”

About JJ Grey & Mofro

According to musician, singer and songwriter JJ Grey, “The best songs I’ve ever written, I never wrote. They wrote themselves. The best show I ever played, played itself and had little to do with me or talent. To me, those things come from the power of an honest moment, and I guess I’m trying to live in that power and not force life to cough up what I want.”

Since his first album, Blackwater , back in 2001, Grey has been releasing deeply moving, masterfully written, funkified rock and front porch Southern soul music. Now, with his new album, Olustee – his tenth and first in nine years, and the first he has self-produced – Grey is back, singing his personal stories with universal themes of redemption, rebirth, hard luck, and i

nner peace. With his music, Grey also celebrates good times with lifelong friends, oftentimes mixing the carnal with the cerebral in the very same song. Fueled by his vividly detailed, timeless originals spun from his own life and experiences in the Northern Florida swampland, Grey’s gritty baritone drips with honest passion and testifies with a preacher’s foot-pounding fervor.

With Olustee , JJ Grey has once again pushed the boundaries of his own creative musical, lyrical and vocal talents, delivering an album that is destined to become a stone-cold classic. Many of the songs are all steeped in the mythical Southern stories of his ancestral Florida home and filled with people from JJ’s life. The songs overflow with the sights and sounds of the region as told through the eyes of a poet and sung with pure, unvarnished soul. The album’s ten songs range from the introspective opener The Sea to the raucous, celebratory first radio single, Wonderland , to an escape from an out-of-control wildfire in the title track, to the inward-looking closer, Deeper Than Belief . Singing of his own personal triumphs and struggles, his hopes and desires, his friends and family, Grey’s message is simple and strong: respect the natural world and always try to live in the moment. And never forget the importance of having a good time.

Grey made his recording debut in 2001 with Blackwater , following up in 2004 with Lochloosa . Both albums were released on the Fog City label under the name Mofro, a moniker the young Grey chose to describe his music and sound while still working his day job at a lumberyard. He has since used the word to name his band of world-class players. In 2007, Grey signed with Alligator Records and released a string of five popular and successful albums: Country Ghetto , 2008’s Orange Blossoms , 2010’s Georgia Warhorse , 2011’s live CD/DVD Brighter Days and 2013’s This River . Ol’ Glory was released on the Provogue label in 2015. Throughout this amazing run of releases, press, radio and years of touring helped catapult JJ Grey & Mofro further into the mainstream. JJ Grey & Mofro have played countless festivals, including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Austin City Limits Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival (Australia), Montreal Jazz Festival and Fuji Rock (Japan). Over the course of his career, Grey has shared stages with the likes of Lenny Kravitz, B.B. King, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Los Lobos, Jeff Beck, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones, Mavis Staples, and many others. Grey and his band continue to play over 75 shows a year across the U.S. and around the world. JJ’s songs have appeared in films and on television, including on House Of Cards , Criminal Minds , Bones , House , Flashpoint , Crash , Friday Night Lights, The Glades , The Deadliest Catch and in films including The Hoot and The Gray Man . In November 2009, JJ wrote his first film score for the critically-acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning documentary The Good Soldier, which appeared in theatres and on Bill Moyers Journal on PBS. Grey, an avid outdoorsman, is a dedicated fisherman, a skilled visual artist (he has designed and drawn the cover art on all of his albums), an  avid surfer and he holds an honorary position on the board of the Angler Action Foundation , dedicated to the protection of coastal fish and fish habitat. He has written passionately and articulately about his love for the untrammeled environment of his North Florida home and continues to advocate for its preservation. From his early days playing cover music behind chicken wire at a west side Jacksonville juke joint, to playing sold-out shows at some of the largest venues and music festivals in the world, JJ Grey has always delivered his soul-honest truths. Now, with Olustee , JJ Grey & Mofro will bring their music directly to fans as they hit the road for a massive months-long tour across the country and throughout the world. AllMusic says JJ Grey’s music is “as authentic as the ground under your feet because that’s where it comes from — just before it moves, simply and directly, through the body of the listener, into the human heart.”

Event Details

From his early days playing cover music behind chicken wire at a west side Jacksonville juke joint while still working at a lumberyard, to playing sold-out shows at some of the largest venues and music festivals in the world, JJ Grey has always delivered his soul-honest truths. Since his first album, Blackwater, back in 2001, Grey has been releasing deeply moving, masterfully written, funkified rock and front porch Southern soul music.

With Olustee, JJ Grey has once again pushed the boundaries of his own creative musical, lyrical and vocal talents, delivering an instant classic. Many of the songs are steeped in the mythical Southern stories of his ancestral Florida home and filled with people from JJ’s life. The songs are told through the eyes of a poet and sung with pure, unvarnished soul. Grey’s message is simple and strong – respect the natural world and always try to live in the moment. And never forget the importance of having a good time!

Standing at Concerts

Standing and Dancing at Concerts: DPAC is proud to welcome all types of concerts to our stage. Sometimes during the course of a concert performance, audience members will show their enthusiasm by standing and dancing, especially when encouraged by the performers to do so. Unless directed by the show, we do not ever enforce a must sit policy at concerts. For most concerts, this would not be acceptable to the performers on stage who often love it when the crowd is moved enough by the performance to stand. This is especially true for rock shows and for seats closest to the stage.

Please know that DPAC does not have a “no standing” policy and in most situations will allow guests to stand even if they block the view of the stage for other guests. If your view is ever blocked by a standing or dancing guest, please contact an usher and we’ll attempt to find alternative seating.

  • Most tickets buyers purchase right from our website using the  Buy Ticket s  button on this page.
  • In addition to purchasing online, DPAC offers several other ways to purchase the seats you want to the best Broadway, concerts, comedy, family shows and special events in North Carolina.
  • Our computerized ticket system enables you equal access to great DPAC seats whether you buy online, by phone, or in person at DPAC.
  • For more details, visit our  Purchase Seats  page for complete information on purchasing great seats for all events at DPAC.
  • All tickets for DPAC events are fully digital and only accessible via your mobile device.  A mobile ticket is the safest, most convenient, and flexible way to receive and manage your tickets while increasing protection against fraud. To learn more about mobile entry, please visit our  Mobile Entry FAQ .

Video Screens

Currently, this event has not approved using our video screens.  Please feel free to check back closer to the event for updates. If approved, we will post notice here.

For many concert, comedy, and special events at DPAC, we offer added views of the stage with two big screens (size: 16’ x 9’) hung to the sides of the stage or above the stage. These big screens can add to the visual experience of our concert, comedy, and special events and give guests seated farther from the stage what we like to call “a tenth row view”. Approval to use these screens always rests with the visiting show and about half of all concert and comedy events do use these screens.
