Himachal Pradesh is a beautiful landlocked state in North India . With natural beauty spread all around, it is no less than a paradise on earth. I have been to many places in Himachal Pradesh but still can’t have enough of it.

The mountains, the rivers, the waterfalls, lush green meadows, snow-clad peaks, dense forests, religious sites, beautiful flora, and fauna, you name it and Himachal Pradesh has it.

Be it trekking in the cold desert mountain in Spiti Valley or backpacking in Parvati Valley , Himachal Pradesh attracts adventurers from all over India.

One of the most beautiful, family-friendly circuits in Himachal Pradesh is Dalhousie – Chamba – Khajjiar.

If snow-capped mountains and dense forests are your calling, don’t forget to check out my posts on Sikkim .

Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba itineraery

So, I am going to present an ideal itinerary for Dalhousie including day trips to Chamba and Khajjiar. This circuit is lush green and breathtakingly beautiful.

So, it is very difficult to squeeze in all the places worth visiting in three days. But still, I have tried to cover the best places to visit in Dalhousie and its neighborhood here.

This is the best 3-day itinerary for Dalhousie.

DAY 1 – Arrive Dalhousie in the morning. Visit nearby places of interest in Dalhousie.

DAY 2 – Reserve whole day to visit Chamba

DAY3 – Go to Khajjiar via Kalatop wildlife sanctuary

But before we embark on this virtual trip, let’s answer some practical questions.

A Quick Outline

How to reach Dalhousie?

The nearest international airport to Dalhousie is Delhi. From Delhi, you can take a flight to Chandigarh and then proceed to Dalhousie on a cab.

Or you can reach Delhi and from there you can go on a Volvo bus, which runs daily. If you want to travel by train, you can go up to Pathankot, which is the nearest railway station and from there you can hire a cab.

Dalhousie is located 560 km away from Delhi. You can also book a taxi for a scenic road trip from Delhi to Dalhousie.

Where to stay in Dalhousie?

There is no dearth of hotels and resorts in Dalhousie. You can easily get one to fit your budget. Here are some recommedations:

Fortune Park Dalhousie $$$$

Bear Valley Resort $$$

Grand View Hotel $$

Dalhousie Itinerary Day 1

My first strong recommendation, if you are traveling by road or train, travel overnight to reach Dalhousie early in the morning. This way you will get to utilize whole day for going around Dalhousie. I say so because Dalhousie is such a naturally beautiful and peaceful place that you need to be calm to enjoy the scenery and soak in the beauty and tranquility of the place. You can’t rush the things and still hope to enjoy.

Subhash Chowk

places to visit in dalhousie and khajjiar

So, the day starts with you arriving in Dalhousie. After checking in to your hotel and freshening up, just get out of your hotel and head straight to Subhash Chowk.

It is more of a viewpoint, where you get a breathtaking view of the snow-clad mountains (if it has snowed), dense forests and lush green valley, all at one place. You can click as many selfies and pictures as you want.

The view is truly mesmerizing, and you won’t feel like leaving the place. Though it is called a chowk (crossing) it actually has five different roads originating from or crossing here. this place has been named after great freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose.

While at Subhash Chowk, go to iconic St. Francis Church , which is located right at Subhash Chowk. This church was built in the year 1894 in British architectural style. The interesting thing is that the army and civilians joined hands to build this church.

The inside of the church has glass and stonework. St. Francis Church has been maintained so well that nobody can say that this structure is more than 100 years old. It is surrounded by tall Deodar trees. And the ambiance of the church is so peaceful it will rejuvenate your soul.

From Subhash Chowk move to Panjpula. This picnic-cum-adventure spot is about 5km from Subhash Chowk. It is also the source of a stream that flows from the top and is said to supply water to the whole of Dalhousie.

Trek to the top to get a magnificent view. Walk alongside the stream and admire its flow. You can indulge in any of the adventure sports on offer here. Enjoy hot pakoras with steaming coffee.

Enjoy the density of the forest around the place. Buy some souvenirs. And above all, enjoy the snow if it is there (I was lucky that it had snowed only a couple of days earlier, so I could actually walk on the snow).

Gandhi Chowk

Once you are done, move over to Gandhi Chowk. It is the mall road and the main shopping center of Dalhousie. Though it is not a very big market you can see many eateries making local delicacies, which you can enjoy.

There are shops selling local handicrafts and souvenirs and other stuff. Spend some time here and do your shopping. There is a Tibetan market also at this place. Check out my Narkanda Diary also.

Talking of Gandhi Chowk, there are two ways of reaching here. First is, you can walk from Subhash Chowk via Garam Sadak. This is a walk of 1 km but a very enjoyable one. Garam Sadak is called so because it receives sunlight throughout the year and hence remains warm.

This road runs along a deep valley and while you walk the road, you can enjoy the stunning view of the valley as well as hills. From Gandhi Chowk, you can take a cab to go to Panjpula.

Or alternately, you can do it another way around. You can visit Panjpula first and then stop at Gandhi Chowk on your return journey.

Dalhousie Itinerary

Now, you must be tired, so you can go back to your hotel to end the day, and relax.

Dalhousie itinerary Day 2- Visit Chamba

Rock garden.

You can explore Chamba today. The first stop would be the Rock Garden. It is an amazing sight. This is a natural rock garden.

Rocks have themselves fallen after disintegrating from mountains and have formed an attractive pattern here. The place has been developed as a tourist spot and is ideal for taking selfies and clicking pictures.

Chamera lake

Chamera Lake - Itinerary for Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba

Next, you reach Chamera dam and Chamera lake. Chamera dam has been built on the river Ravi, which flows through this place. The dam produces hydroelectricity. The lake has been built by the water collected around the dam.

It is a beautiful place. The lake is surrounded by lush green as well as snow-clad hills and is a very peaceful place. You can enjoy boating here in different types of boats and admire the beauty all around. Spend 2-3 hours at Chamera lake and visit the dam also.

When you drive further up, you start to move along the river Ravi, which is another thrilling site You can stop at a suitable spot for a little while. Enjoy the flow of the river. Spend time on the river bank and take pictures.

Exploring Chamba town

When you near Chamba town, you start to see small but lush green farms on the roadside. You can’t help but admire the scenery.

Moving into Chamba town, head straight to Laxminarayan temple in the center of the city, the oldest and the largest temple of Chamba. There are six beautiful idols of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The main idol of Lord Vishnu is made of marble and is a sight in itself. The most amazing thing about the temple is that it always remains pleasant inside irrespective of the weather outside.

Next, go to Himachal emporium in Raja Umed Singh’s Rang Mahal . Here you can buy local handicrafts like shawls and handkerchiefs. Its timings are from 10 am to 1 pm and then from 2 pm to 5 pm.

There are a couple of more beautiful temples around which you can visit if you have the time.

That will end day 2 and you can return to your hotel and relax.

In the Indian terrain, shoes can make or break your travel experiences. Read to know about the best travel shoes in India .

Dalhousie Itinerary Day 3 – explore Khajjiar

This could be the most interesting day of your trip. This could be the most hectic yet most enjoyable day of your trip. I was unfortunate to miss a few of these places as the road was closed due to snowfall during my visit.

Kalatop wildlife sanctuary

You start early and reach Kalatop wildlife sanctuary. Kalatop wildlife sanctuary has a variety of wildlife and verdant grasslands.

Surrounded by snow-covered peaks and tall trees along with pleasing streams, this place offers you the most enchanting experience. Just explore the sanctuary and click pictures. It is very rich in flora and fauna. You will find species like leopard, bear, deer, langur, jackal, barking goral and many beautiful birds.

Ganji Pahadi

From here, the next stop will be Ganji Pahadi. It is again a beautiful place. The name says it all. Ganji means bald and Pahadi means hill. This has been named so because of its landscape. Ganji Pahadi doesn’t have any flora on it.

But the brilliance of the place is in the colors it reflects. It offers a panoramic view from the top. During winters it is fully covered in snow making it an offbeat winter wonderland of India .

Khajjiar Meadows - Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba itinerary

Now moving to last but definitely not the least part of the trip. From here you head to Khajjiar. It is rightly called the “Mini Switzerland of India”. This is one place you should not miss for your life.

Unbelievably beautiful landscape, the surroundings, and the whole atmosphere make it a paradise. Khajjiar is a saucer-shaped lush green meadow with a small lake at the center. It is the most picturesque place you could ever see.

It is a sight for eyes to behold. Just go there and throw yourself on the green grass under the blue sky and soak in the beauty and tranquility that is lying all around.

You can enjoy adventure sports also like zorbing and paragliding. There is a small ancient temple here called Khajji Nag temple. Go there and seek blessings. While returning, stop at Jai Jagdambe temple, which has an 84 feet high statue of Lord Shiva.

So, return to your hotel and take rest.

So, this is the best three-day itinerary for Dalhousie-Chamba-Khajjiar and I am sure you will be three most enjoyable days you would ever have. Pin the image below to save it for later.

Sounds like a great itinerary, full of variety. I would love to check out Chamera Lake, although I might need to spend more than 2-3 hours there! It’s so beautiful. The Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary also sounds pretty cool to check out some of the local wildlife!

The itinerary sounds perfect for someone who does not know the area of India very well at all. When visiting Kalatop is it guaranteed that you can see leopards? This is something that I would love to experience. Chamera Lake and Dam looks such a peaceful area and very picturesque with the snowcapped mountains in the distance. Thanks for sharing this great itinerary.

Thanks Jane. I don’t think viewing leopards or tigers in India is guaranteed anywhere.Unlike lions which stay in barren lands, these delusive creatures love to stay in dense forests and are usually hidden from common sight.

This is a nice and varied itinerary about visiting this part of India. I’ve never been to the country, so enjoyed reading about Dalhousie and Chamba. The lake is so pretty, and I’d probably take a few hundred photos if I ever visit. I appreciate the accommodation options given too.

This is a beautiful itinerary of the most picturesque cities of HP. I have not been to any of these. I am planning for Spiti this summer, can these cities be included in Spiti itinerary? Would it be a good idea?

I think it would be a great idea!

I was born in India and did have the opportunity to visit Dalhousie when I was a child and this post brought back loads of memories I must say. I did not visit the other places but would love to go back there and discover Khajjar for sure for its natural beauty. I must admit I quite like the cuisine around this part of India and its rich and perfect suited for the cold weather. The wildlife safari looks good for the kids as well so will add that too. THANKS

Dalhousie looks amazing! I have never been to India but as I read more and more about it, I really want to go. I also love the photo from the lake, that looks like a lovely place to explore. I did not know that there is snow in India.

I have been to both Dalhousie and Khajjiar and loved the places. Though it is over-crowded during peak seasons. I prefer to stay in a secluded place, away from the crowd. This is a good itinerary for people who are planning to visit the places during summer vacation.

I’m really curious about the adventure sports at Panjpula! I am down for just about any kind of adventure sport, so I feel like I’d want to spend more time there than at the markets/shopping areas. I just visited a hydroelectric waterfall in Peru and found it to be fascinating, so I’d love to visit the dam and learn more about how it generates hydroelectric energy!

Ah, it’s fascinating. I want to do that too.

I was really surprised that there was a Mini Switzerland in India. I didn’t imagine the landscape would look like that. Thanks for the very detailed itinerary. I am planning a trip to India in the next two years so this will be very helpful.

Glad to be of help!

I am not very familiar with India – but Himachal Pradesh sounds like a great place to visit. The town of Khajjiar is awesome – love that it is a mini-Switzerland of India! I would love to go there and just relax in the grass taking it all in!

Thank you. And thanks to the guest writer.

Unfortunately I don’t know a lot about India yet since I haven’t been able to visit, so I was happy that you described so well where in India this place is. I love the scenery and it looks like an awesome place to do some outdoors activities. It is interesting to see that they have those buildings reminding of Switzerland.

I love the idea of driving from Delhi to Dalhousie so I could take in the beautiful scenery on the way. And then again on foot at Garam Sadak to walk the road along the valley for more mountain scenes. Chamera Lake looks absolutely picture perfect, too! You’ve offered some great suggestions that suit this “slow travel” gal. Thank you!

This post brought back one of my fondest childhood memories of taking a road trip with my parents and grandparents during the summer break to Dalhousie, Khajiiar, Chamba and then heading off to Dharamshala. We had stayed overnight in Dalhousie – can still recall that feeling of waking up to the scent of fresh pine and view of misty mountains beyond. Loved the surrounding views from the lush meadow in Khajiiar.

Thanks Aditi. I am yet to visit this beautiful place. Thanks to our guest author for the guide.

I would have loved the article if you should have also mentioned where I can have a relaxing stay in Dalhousie. Except for that, you have almost mentioned everything that a person requires before making their trip to Dalhousie, Khajjiar, & Chamba.

Backpacking to Dalhousie for 2 Days: The Complete Itinerary

places to visit in dalhousie and khajjiar

traveller Avdhesh

Dalhousie two day itinerary should be able to cover most of this small but beautiful town. Dalhousie is one of the pristine hill towns of Himachal Pradesh. It is located in Chamba district at an elevation of more than 6400 feet above sea level. It treats its visitors with breathtaking views of the majestic snow-capped Pir Panjal mountain range, Sach Pass and  Pangi Valley

Dalhousie is a treasure trove of ancient Hindu temples, British architecture, traditional handicrafts, art and culture. It is situated on five different hills amidst fragrant pines, rhododendrons and oak trees. It is for this reason that your Dalhousie two day itinerary should be able to help you maximize travel in this wondrous town.

Being in this beautiful region and not being able to explore it fully will be a pity. Hence, plan and stick to an itinerary that assists you in making the most out of your trip. Usually, a trip to Dalhousie is made as complementary to a Chamba trip overall. If you’re in this beautiful region for sightseeing, 2 days are enough for covering Dalhousie and two days should be kept for Chamba.

Dalhousie

A quick look at the Dalhousie Two Day Itinerary

Known for its pleasant climate and alluring valleys, Dalhousie is one of the must-visit places in Himachal Pradesh . It’s an ideal place for travellers, explorers and adventure enthusiasts who love to go into the wild and experience an adrenaline rush. From adventurous activities to some light strolling, from locally made stuff to Tibetan handicrafts, each corner of Dalhousie has something unique to offer you.

In case you’re in Himachal from an insider’s exploration point of view, make sure to cover Chamba in detail along with places like Spiti Valley and Dharamshala- McleodGanj .

Before I dwell on the intricacies of Dalhousie as a region, here’s a brief overview of the Dalhousie two day itinerary that will highlight the essential aspects of your trip.

Ideal Dalhousie Two Day Itinerary for spending 48 hours optimally

The ideal Dalhousie two day itinerary should be planned in a way so as to cover the following five places within 48 hours. Here is what I would recommend.

Day 1: Explore India’s Mini Switzerland ‘Khajjiar’ and Chamba on the 1st day of Dalhousie two day visit

Day 1 should begin with a great breakfast. If you have booked a hostel, they will provide you with breakfast without any extra charges. Hostels are a great choice for solo travellers in the region. They are safe, comfortable and within budget. Go stops Dalhousie is a wonderful hostel if you are travelling solo in the region. I would definitely suggest you stay here.

Hire a cab or take a bike on rent and move towards Khajjiar. Spend quality time there. Many adventure sports activities are available in Khajiar. You can do zorbing, Horse riding, Paragliding, etc.

Dalhousie two day itinerary

You can try a number of adventure sports in Khajjiar. In addition to horse riding, and zorbing, you could go paragliding around the area. It’s truly an unforgettable experience. However, make sure that the organisers you opt for are safe and trusted.

If you don’t want to indulge in any adventurous activity, feel free to simply enjoy the alluring beauty of the place. Listen to the local melodies there.

After lunch, move towards Chamba town. It takes almost an hour to reach Chamba from Dalhousie. In Chamba town, visit:

  • Chamunda Devi temple
  • Laxmi Narayan Temple which was built in the 10th century
  • Bhuri Singh Museum.

You can relax and enjoy the ambience of the town, by simply strolling at Chamba Chowgan or move to a nearby village to explore more.

After spending a good time in Chamba Town, return to your place of stay in the evening and enjoy stargazing.

Day 2: On 2nd day of your Dalhousie Trip, Visit Dainkund, Chamera Lake and St. Francis Church

Start your second day by witnessing the astonishing sunrise view from the Dainkund Peak. Visit Pohlani Mata Temple there and enjoy the fresh and fragrant air along with the 360-degree view.

You can also camp there if you wish to take a quick nap till the afternoon. To me, a quick nap or rest at a beautiful peak is very soothing.

Return to Dalhousie and have lunch. Visit Chamera lake and spend some there. Boating is a good option at the lake. Enjoy some light snacks that are readily available.

From Chamera, visit the St. Francis church. You can stroll through the local markets as the Church is situated nearby the Subhash Chowk.

End day 2 as well as your trip by taking some rest at your place of stay. Don’t forget to reserve your return bus ticket in advance.

5 Sublime Places I covered in my Dalhousie Two Day Itinerary

The high mountain ranges amidst the terrain have given Dalhousie a sheltered position and helped in preserving its centuries-old relics and numerous inscriptions. Far away from the chaos of the city, there are numerous hidden places to explore in Dalhousie.

Some of the must-visit places in Dalhousie as suggested by an ideal Dalhousie two day itinerary are as follows.

Find below a brief description of some of the finest places in and around Dalhousie. Your intention should be to cover all of them. Ensure a spot for them in your Dalhousie two day itinerary.

1. Khajjiar – the ‘Mini Switzerland of India’

Famously known as the ‘Mini Switzerland of India,’ Khajjiar is a popular hill station, located at a distance of about 22 kilometres from Dalhousie. It takes almost 30 minutes to 1 hour to reach here by bus or car.

Khajjiar is situated at a height of 6500 feet and bestowed with natural beauty and pleasant climate. It is covered with dense deodar forests from all sides. This treats the eyes of every visitor to a pleasant sight. It has a rare combination of three ecosystems – lake, pasture and forest.

From paragliding to horseback riding and zorbing, there are plenty of recreational activities in this scenic hill town. Not that keen on an adventure? Fret not, you can simply relax amid nature and soak in the spectacular vistas of surroundings from the lake.

2. Chamba Town – History Revisited

Chamba is the only town in north India to preserve a well-documented history from circa 500 A.D. The temples erected by Rajas (kings) of Chamba more than a thousand years ago continue to be worshipped even today. It is 54 kilometres from Dalhousie and is famous among travellers. There are several historic places to visit and explore here.

3. Chamera Lake- One of the most beautiful water bodies

Chamera lake is situated at a distance of 35 km from Dalhousie. It is mystical in nature and is one of the most beautiful artificial lakes in Himachal Pradesh . The Chamera lake is set amid picturesque valleys with lush green trees.

It is a famous travel destination due to its perfect year-round climate. Water sports like pedal boating, motor boating etc are organised by Himachal Pradesh tourism here on an annual basis.

Spend time strolling on the lakeside listening to the melodies of nature and thinking deeply about life.

4. Dainkund Peak – the highest peak in Dalhousie

Situated at an altitude of 2775 meters, Dainkund is the highest peak in Dalhousie. A picturesque mountain peak with a 360-degree view from the top gives a breathtaking scenic glimpse of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal mountain ranges. Also, three to five rivers of Punjab glittering in the sunshine as they disperse somewhere in plains.

Pir Panjal Mountain Ranges

The mighty Pir Panjal Mountain Ranges as seen around sunset. Watching the snow-capped mountain peaks turn golden is almost like a miracle. Do visit the Dainkund Peak for wonderful views of the mountain ranges around sunrise and sundown.

Besides this, Dainkund peak is the perfect spot to witness sunrise and sunset in a very mystical way. The play of clouds in lush green down-hills is really pleasing here. It is a place where nature is fully blessed with a lot of things. Tiny hamlets, lofty mountains, and peaceful meadows are like pure heaven. It gives you a chance to explore Dalhousie in all its purity.

Dainkund peak should certainly be a part of your Dalhousie two day itinerary. Explore it by all means.

5. St. Francis Church – Perfect architecture in the perfect setting

Built in 1894, St. Francis Church is located at the Subhash Chowk. Dalhousie’s St. Francis Church was built in accordance with a famous Church of England.

The architectural style of the church bears the old British type of architecture. The St. Francis Church in Dalhousie is a major travel attraction. The magnificent stone works and the glass designs please the art lovers and the general visitors alike.

How much does a 2 day Dalhousie Trip Cost?

Considering the two-way journey (New Delhi-Dalhousie-New Delhi), accommodation, meals and local travel by bus/cab, an estimated amount for 2 days backpacking trip should not be more than 6000 to 7000 INR.

In case you’re unable to book the Government-run Guest House, you can opt for any of the following two budget accommodations. Make sure to book your stay in advance to avoid last-minute changes.

Smart Hill Kalatop

This is a decent place to stay for both families as well as backpackers. The hygiene of the place is quite good and so is the service. Wifi provided here is free of cost and there’s a common seating area for guests. The average price of staying here for one night begins at 750 INR.

Bholenath Homestay Dalhousie

A wonderful place to stay for travellers including families. The staff is decent and the variety of rooms offered is good. The average price of staying here for one night begins at 1100 INR.

3 Ways to Reach Dalhousie for a 2-Day Trip

Most people reach Dalhousie by bus since direct buses run between New Delhi (the Indian capital) and Chamba. However, in all, there are three ways to reach here.

4 Essential Tips for Saving Money on your Dalhousie Two Day Trip

Plan your Dalhousie two day itinerary in such a way that it helps you stick to your budget. Overspending on travel aspects that don’t need extra spending is being plain foolish. Instead, plan methodically and keep the following tips in mind at all times.

  • Stay Local  Try to implement my ‘ The Local’ formula- Travel Local, Eat Local, Stay Local. Believe me, this will help you save a lot of money.
  • Choose a Homestay  Don’t waste your money on hotels. Rather, try to book any homestay , guest house or hostel. Most of them will provide you with free breakfast and free wifi.
  • Try the traditional cuisine instead  of visiting fancy restaurants, try the traditional cuisine which is available at most of the local eateries. Don’t miss the Madraa of Chamba, a famous Chamba dish.
  • Shopping on a budget  For shopping lovers, Gandhi Chowk Shopping market is the best place for you. Here, you can find some famous and traditional stuff at flexible rates.

Dalhousie two day itinerary

Some Important contact numbers are as follows –

  • Police Station Dalhousie- 01899-242126
  • Ambulance- 108

Dalhousie is a great weekend site to relax and detox your body emotionally and physiologically. Plan a good Dalhousie two day itinerary soon and venture into the hills.

Dalhousie two day itinerary

To lead a minimalistic lifestyle and reduce waste, try being as organic as possible. A number of streams in the Himalayas are absolutely clean and safe to drink water from. However, before doing so, ask a local about the cleanliness of the water.

Stay Responsible on your 2 days Dalhousie visit

During your trip to Dalhousie, try to indulge in local things and stay as environment-friendly as possible. Drink water from natural water streams rather than plastic water bottles, try the local cuisine to connect with the flavours of the region and speak with the native people to know more about the place.

Always remember, we don’t create nature. Nature has created us. So let it be that way. Don’t bring or spread plastic or polythene bags to the hills. Try to maintain the sanctity of the mountain regions by preserving the ecosystem.

Happy wayfaring 🙂

Dalhousie is a historical hill town in the state of Himachal Pradesh . Located in the lap of the Pir Panjal mountains, the town was founded in 1854, when the British bought five hills named Kathlog, Potreyn, Bakrota, Tera, and Bhangora from the rulers of Chamba. They then developed them as a sanatorium for their troops recuperating from leprosy, and named the town after the British Governor-General, Lord Dalhousie.

Although overshadowed by the more popular hill stations of McLeodganj, Dharamshala , and Shimla, this town has retained much of its colonial charm, and offers many attractions and breathtaking landscapes for a long weekend outing. Here are the top things to do on your next trip to Dalhousie.

Go on a Trek to Pohlani Mata Temple

Situated atop Dainkund Peak, the highest point in Dalhousie, is the abode of Hindu goddess Pohlani. While the trident at the temple is revered, a trek along the ridge en route to the religious place offers stunning views of the rivers of Punjab, the Chamba valley, and the snow-capped peaks of the lower Himalaya. From the top, trekkers often go further to Jot, a mountain hamlet offering sweeping vistas, or downhill to the meadows of Khajjiar.

Plan a Visit to Mini Switzerland

The picturesque Khajjiar is small hill station in Himachal Pradesh. With a landscape that's topographically similar to Switzerland, it was dubbed the "Mini Switzerland of India" in 1992 by the then Swiss Envoy Willy P. Blazer (since then the name has caught on). Located at a distance of about 14.3 miles from Dalhousie, Khajjiar's saucer-shaped meadow is surrounded by forests of pine, deodar, and cedar, with scenic views of the scintillating peaks of Dhauladhar in the backdrop. While here, do pay a visit to the centuries-old, wooden Khajji Nag temple, dedicated to the lord of serpents.

Admire the Architecture of Sacred Heart School

Over the decades, Dalhousie has transformed into an education hub, and one of the oldest and reputed of the residential schools is the Sacred Heart School. Started by Belgium nuns in 1901, the sprawling 21-acre premises feature a century-old cathedral, well-manicured lawns dotted with colonial cottages, and Victorian-era buildings. It's the perfect place for architecture lovers.

Cross Five Bridges to See a Waterfall

Located about 1.9 miles from Dalhousie, Panchpula Waterfall is a popular destination among locals. (Panchpula, which translates to "five bridges" in Hindi, is named after the five stone bridges one has to cross to reach it). You can partake in a number of adventurous activities in the area, including trekking and camping, or simply pack a picnic and enjoy the cascades and springs. While you're here, consider visiting the memorial to revolutionary revolutionary leader Ajit Singh.

Travel tip: On your way to Panchpula, be sure to stop and take in the views at the trickling Satdhara springs.

Browse the Markets Around the Mall Road

Mall Road, a circuit around the Moti Tibba hill, is where you'll find most of the shops and eating joints in town. Start at Gandhi Chowk; right in the heart of Dalhousie, this plaza boasts numerous street vendors, kiosks, and food stalls selling everything from dosa and momos to sweaters and jackets. Nearby, there's a Tibetan market filled with handicrafts, jewelry, and woolen wear. Shop for knitted Himachali socks and shawls, rhododendron wines, and a Himachali pickle called "chukk." From Gandhi Chowk, a short walk along the Garam Sadak route leads to the Subash Chowk and Sadar Bazar markets.

Go Church Hopping

The town of Dalhousie is dotted with beautiful churches featuring stained glass paintings and centuries-old wooden interiors. St. Francis and Sacred Heart are located near Subash Chowk, though St. John's Church is just around the corner from the Gandhi Chowk. Meanwhile, the old St. Patrick's and St. Andrew's churches are nestled inside the pristine Balun cantonment, a few miles down the hill from Dalhousie.

Hike the Bakrota Hills

Srinivasan G / Wikimedia Commons

Home to beautiful cottages, brooks, and pine forests, the Bakrota Hills is one of the five hills that make up the town of Dalhousie. While its salubrious surroundings are perfect for bird watchers, it also appeals to history lovers owing to its association with some of India's most notable figures. Named after Indian freedom fighter Subash Chandra Bose, Subash Bowli is a perennial spring whose waters are said to have healed him. Likewise, Nobel Laureate and social reformer Rabindranath Tagore, inspired by his long stay in Bakrota, sung the praise of Dalhousie and its pristine beauty in his books.

Walk Through the Forested Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Spanning 19 square miles, the forested Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Expect to see Himalayan black bears, martens, pheasants, and serows while trekking along the rugged path leading to the sanctuary. With a tea stall and snack bar inside its premises, the Kalatop Sanctuary, located 8 miles away from Dalhousie, is perfect for a leisurely stroll on a lazy afternoon.

Go on a Picnic by Chamera Lake and Rock Garden

Located around 15.5 miles from Dalhousie, Chamera Lake—the reservoir of Chamera Dam, built across the Ravi River—is a perfect water sports destination and picnic spot. Boat rides and canoeing, a small park with eateries, and a walk over the dam attract children as well as adults.

Travel tip: If you're looking for another good spot for a family picnic, check out the Rock Garden en route to the dam.

Re-Visit a Bygone era at Chamba

Located on the banks of the Ravi River at the crossroads of the Dhauladhar and Zanskar ranges, the town of Chamba is home to ancient palaces and temples dating back to the 6th century. An erstwhile princely province of the Chamba rulers (from whom the five hills of Dalhousie were bought by the British), this heritage town has retained much of its glorious medieval past. While in Chamba, do offer obeisance at the exquisitely constructed Laxmi Narayan temple, which features six towering Shikhara-styled spires and small shrines.

10 Unique Places To Visit in Dalhousie: Better Than Manali?

What is common between Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose and Rudyard Kipling? All of them had a common love for the peaceful climate and pleasant atmosphere of Dalhousie and spend quite some time here when it was under the control of the British empire.

While Dalhousie has changed a lot since then, it still exudes an old-world charm with Victorian-style mansions surrounded by deodar and pine forests and the snow-capped Himalayas in the background.

It is also home to the mini ‘Switzerland of India’, has a thriving Tibetan culture and lots of trekking and hiking trails throughout its beautiful landscape.

And the best part is that Dalhousie can be visited by solo travellers, couples or even families during different seasons.

I spent three days in Dalhousie with my family and through this guide, I would like to tell you the ’10 unique places to visit in Dalhousie’ so that you can plan an amazing trip to this quaint little hill station.

2. Garam Sadak and Mall Road

6. dainkund peak, 10. shri chamunda devi mandir, cafe by mongas, smart hill kalatop, how many days is enough for dalhousie, where is dalhousie.

Dalhousie derives its name from Lord Dalhousie, the British Governor-General of India who founded it in 1854. The British acquired five hills –  Kathalagh, Potreyn, Terah ,  Bakrota  and  Bhangora  — from the ruler of the Chamba State for developing the area as a summer retreat and in return, his taxes were reduced.

Located in the northeastern part of Himachal Pradesh in the Chamba district bordering Jammu and Punjab, this hill station is 120 km from Dharamshala, another popular hill station in Himachal Pradesh.

10 unique places to visit in Dalhousie

You can cover Dalhousie in two days but if you want to cover the nearby places, I suggest you spend at least three days as I did. At the very least, you’ll enjoy the road trips you take across Dalhousie.

With that said, let me tell you about the 10 unique places to visit in Dalhousie if you’re planning a three-day trip. I’ve added them in chronological order to make it easier for you to organize your trip.

If you’re travelling by bus or train, you’ll be reaching Dalhousie in the morning or early afternoon. Hence, to keep things light on Day 1, we’ll explore the town on foot and soak in the sights and sceneries.

1. St. Francis Church

places to visit in dalhousie

After checking in to our homestay and freshening up, we took a stroll through the town and visited St. Francis Church.

Built-in 1894 by army officers and civilians, St. Francis Church is the oldest church in Dalhousie which has Victorian architecture and resembles many of the famous churches in England. It is made of stone structures, wooden roofs and colourful Belgium glass.

It has a well-maintained lawn, is surrounded by pine trees and is covered with fog giving the place an eerie vibe. The church is still functional and has services on all Sundays.

St. Francis Church is located in Subhash Chowk and you can visit this place if you want to spend some time in peace and nature.

delhi to dalhousie bus

From Subhash Chowk, we take a nature walk through Garam Sadak.

As the name suggests, Garam Sadak is a road that remains warm throughout the year due to the direct sunlight that falls on it. However, you’ll enjoy the pleasant walk because the road is covered by lush green trees with misty fog and panoramic views of mountains in the background.

Another reason to take a stroll through this road is that it is a pedestrian-only road. No vehicles are allowed!

This road connects Subhash Chowk to Gandhi Chowk, two prominent intersections in Dalhousie. On the way, you’ll also encounter prominent Tibetan rock paintings.

dalhousie to chamba

After walking for 1.2 km, you’ll reach Gandhi Chowk. Also known as Mall Road, this is the main market of Dalhousie. Here, you’ll find many cafes, restaurants, hotels, small shops and street food.

Visit the Indo Tibetan market if you want to shop for woollen clothes, crockeries, women’s accessories, souvenirs, etc. The market becomes crowded in the evening and the rates are also slightly higher hence you need to bargain to get a reasonable rate here.

After shopping, you can grab a quick snack or dinner from one of the restaurants/cafes nearby (more on this later).

On Day 2, we’ll travel to the nearby places in Dalhousie. Make sure you wake up early and leave by 9 am as you’ll be covering the bulk of the places in Dalhousie today.

If you’re looking for the top places to visit in Dalhousie in 2 days, the places that I’ve mentioned on Day 1 and on Day 2 should be enough. It’s also important to note that apart from visiting these places, you can get down in-between to observe the ever-changing landscapes.

3. Khajjiar

tourist places in dalhousie

Known as the mini ‘Switzerland of India’, Khajjiar is the most iconic destination and one of the best places to visit in Dalhousie.

Khajjiar is a hamlet valley with a small pond in the middle covered with evergreen deodar and pine trees and the snow-capped Himalayas in the backdrop. The distance from Dalhousie to Khajjiar is 20 km.

The place derives its name from the Khajji Nag Temple which was built in the 12th century.

The drive to this place is equally mesmerizing. You’ll pass through a forest reserve before this place shows up magically out of nowhere.

dalhousie places to visit

In terms of activities, you can take a walk around the meadows or take part in adventure activities like zorbing, horse-riding and paragliding.

The only con with Khajjiar is that it is the most frequented place in Dalhousie, hence, you may find many tourists here. However, you’ll still be able to find a corner of Khajjiar for yourself.

While Khajjiar can also be visited in winters, the best time to visit it is after the monsoon season when the entire landscape including the meadows and the trees is full of greenery enveloped by mists and fog.

4. Lord Shiva Statue

delhi to dalhousie

Hardly 2 km from Khajjiar is the Lord Shiva Statue. Instead of taking your car, you can also walk to this place.

You will witness an 80 feet long statue of Lord Shiva here amidst the backdrop of the Himalayas, blue skies and pine trees. The overall setting is peaceful and scenic.

This Lord Shiva Statue reminded me of the Shiva Statue that is found near Gokarna .

The reason why I recommend this place is because it is less frequented and you can spend some time exploring different sceneries from here.

You can also visit the temple near the statue. While you’re here, you’ll be able to see one of the paragliding landing sites.

5. Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

where is dalhousie

After visiting Lord Shiva Statue, you have to drive back towards Dalhousie to visit the remaining two places. One of those places is the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, which is 16 km or an hour away from the Statue.

Home to the Himalayan Bear and plenty of other unique animal species, the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is located within oak and coniferous forests neighbouring the Ravi River.

At the sanctuary, you will find small restaurants from where you can have tea and enjoy some snacks while watching the Pir Panjal mountain ranges in the background. There’s also a souvenir shop that sells local and natural products like honey and pickle.

To get the best experience inside a forest, I suggest you stay in the Forest Rest House, the Kalatop campsite or Smart Hill Kalatop (more on this later). A lot of treks start from the Forest Rest House.

dalhousie tourist places

Talking of treks, you can take the help of a guide like Mr Vivek Kumar (enquire about him) who can show you all the places around the sanctuary, tell you about the history of the place and take you for hikes.

In terms of adventure sports, you can try out zip lining and rope-bridge, apart from trekking.

You can reach the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary by vehicle or by walking for 3 km. If you have time, I suggest you walk especially if you enjoy hiking through a forest and surrounding yourself with the sounds of nature. Another benefit is that you can save INR 250 which you will have to pay if you take your car.

dalhousie to khajjiar

For sunset, make sure you visit the highest point in Dalhousie i.e. the Dainkund Peak. From Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, Dainkund is 7 km away.

Dainkund Peak is one of the most offbeat places to visit in Dalhousie.

It is a refreshing 1.5 km trek that takes you through a hill with a bird’s eye view of the surrounding green valleys and tall mountains.

The trial is well laid out with steps built in between and slight ascents here and there. The trek can be done by anyone with reasonable fitness including aged people.

things to do in dalhousie

At the start of the trek, you will observe the Indian Air Force station situated right opposite the hill.

The last point of the trek is the Pholani Devi temple which also has a small shop from where you can have tea and snacks. Behind the temple, you’ll also be able to see 360-degree views of Mount Kailash peak and other mountain ranges.

We enjoyed the overall hike as we witnessed different mountain ranges covered by deodar and pine trees and engulfed in mists.

In winter, this area becomes a winter wonderland as it’s covered with snow.

If you’re a photographer you cannot afford to miss this place at any cost!

On Day 3, we travel to Chamba, an ancient town in Himachal Pradesh that is 53 km or less than 2 hours away from it. While there are interesting places to see in Chamba, you’ll also enjoy the road trip from Dalhousie to Chamba which was another highlight of our trip.

7. Chamera Lake Viewpoint and Dam

best time to visit dalhousie

Chamera Lake is your first stop on the way to Chamba.

Built on the River Ravi, it is created by a dam that supplies water to the nearby villages.

The viewpoint gives you an aerial perspective of the dam that surrounds itself with mountain ranges on either side and the snow-laden Himalayan peaks in the background.

After taking some pictures from the viewpoint, you can also visit the Chamera Dam to have a closer look at the lake and the dam. It is another half an hour from the viewpoint and the drive is also scenic.

At the dam, you can try water sports activities like river rafting, motor boating, canoeing, and kayaking. You’ll also find some eateries nearby.

8. Bhuri Singh Museum

weather in dalhousie

Once you reach the Chamba, the first place to visit here is the Bhuri Singh Museum which gives you an artistic, cultural and historical context of the ancient town of Chamba and the nearby areas.

Known as one of the oldest museums in India, the museum was established on 14 September 1908 in honour of Raja Bhuri Singh, who ruled Chamba State from 1904 to 1919. He gifted his inherited art collection and Dr J. Ph. Vogel, an expert in the history of Chamba, set up the museum to preserve the culture and history of Chamba.

The museum contains numerous antiques and artefacts like paintings, coins, jewellery, traditional attires, arms, musical instruments and letters dating back to the 4th century AD.

Watch out for the Chamba Rumaal which is a special embroidered handkerchief that was a common gift item during medieval times. You can also buy the same from the shop nearby.

The museum remains open on all days from 10 AM to 5 PM, except Mondays and it can take up to 45 minutes to cover the entire place.

9. Laxmi Narayan Temple

how to reach dalhousie

If you’re into architecture, you cannot miss the Laxmi Narayan Temple.

Less than half a kilometre from the Bhuri Singh Museum and in the main market of Chamba, the Laxmi Narayan Temple is an ancient temple that was built in the 10th century AD with handcrafted stone blocks. There are six temples in total inside the entire complex dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.

The main attraction of the temple is that it is built in the Shikhara style i.e. upward in a curved fashion with a wheel-shaped roof that protects the temple from snowfall and intricate carvings.

The surrounding mountain ranges and the Ravi River add to the overall ambience.

The temple complex is open from 6 am to 12.30 pm and 2.30 pm to 8.30 pm.

pathankot to dalhousie

Our final destination for the trip is the Shri Chamunda Devi Mandir.

Built-in 1762, this is another ancient temple in Chamba with interesting architecture. It is the only wooden temple in Chamba with a gabled roof (triangular roof).

It is dedicated to Chamunda Devi, an incarnation of the Goddess Durga, with elaborate wood carvings and figures of various deities.

Apart from the temple itself, the main reason why I recommend this place is because of the remarkable scenery you get from here.

As it’s located on a hilltop, you get an aerial view of the entire Chamba town neighbouring the Ravi River with mountain ranges in the background.

If you’re here during sunset, you’ll enjoy the scenery even more.

How to reach Dalhousie?

khajjiar dalhousie

To reach Dalhousie, you need to reach Pathankot which is a small city in Punjab.

The nearest airport to Dalhousie is the Pathankot airport. You can get direct flights from major cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi and Kolkata to Pathankot. At the airport, you can find cabs that take you from Pathankot to Dalhousie.

Pathankot Junction railway station is the nearest station at a distance of 80 km from Dalhousie.

There are several overnight trains that you’ll get from New Delhi to Pathankot. Hence, if you’re coming from any other part of India, it’s better to take a flight to Delhi and then take an overnight train from there.

After getting down at the Pathankot Junction railway station, you can walk to the government bus stand nearby from where you’ll find frequent buses to Dalhousie.

If you want to avoid getting down at Pathankot, you’ll find plenty of direct government and private buses from New Delhi to Dalhousie through apps like Redbus and Abhibus .

How to travel within Dalhousie?

The best way to travel within Dalhousie is to hire a cab from the homestay or the hostel you’re staying at.

We did the same and our cab driver took us around Dalhousie at a reasonable rate. Another benefit is that they know all the local places and they can drive very well on the mountain roads.

Alternatively, you can book a self-driving car via Zoomcar from Chandigarh which is 340 km or less than 7 hours away from Dalhousie.

The best thing about the weather in Dalhousie is that it has three distinct seasons: summers, winters and monsoon. Every weather has something special for travellers.

Summer (March to May)

You can visit Dalhousie from March to May as the summers are pleasant but also expect a lot of crowds at this time as it is the most frequented season of the year. Plan your booking to avoid missing out on your favoured accommodation.

Monsoon (June to September)

We visited Dalhousie in August and while we faced some mild showers, it was not enough to derail our trip. Contrarily, it turned out to be the best decision because Dalhousie was covered with lush green trees and forests blanketed by mists and fogs.

As a bonus, the crowds were less during this time and the rates were also cheaper.

Winter (October to February)

If you love winters, you can visit Dalhousie in October and November. However, if you’re someone who enjoys snowfall, you can visit Dalhousie in December and January as it snows during this time. Do note that certain destinations in and around Dalhousie may remain off bounds especially if it snows heavily.

Best restaurants in Dalhousie

dalhousie chamba

One of the best things to do in Dalhousie is to try out different restaurants and cafes in and around the Mall Road area. Following are some places you can try:

Kwality Restaurant

If you’re looking for a no-nonsense, value-for-money North Indian restaurant, you can blindly go to Kwality Restaurant.

They’re located in Mall Road, have an extensive menu and serve both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

They also do takeaways and deliveries.

Hotel Iravati Chamba

You may not get this recommendation anywhere on the internet but if you’re in Chamba, you must visit Hotel Iravati. It is managed by the state government and in our experience, we had the best food of the trip at this hotel.

You get authentic Chamba and ‘Pahadi’ food at this place which tastes delicious, is good in quantity and at a reasonable rate.

The ‘Chamba ka Madra’ is one dish I recommend based on my experience.

Bon Appetit Restaurant

This is the go-to place for fast food in Dalhousie and another restaurant that is located on Mall Road.

It is a small shop with a variety of snacking options like burgers, pizzas and frankies in both veg and non-veg options. The portions are good and the prices are reasonable.

Being a small place, they have a couple of benches outside the shop.

Cafe by mongas is a quant-little cafe located 2.5 km away from Mall Road. It’s known for serving high-quality continental food including pasta, desserts and pancakes.

The view from the cafe combined with the colourful interiors and good music adds to the experience.

Do not forget to try their coffee while you’re here.

Best places to stay in Dalhousie

Whether you’re a solo traveller, travelling with a group of friends or with family, you’ll find homestays and hostels of all types in Dalhousie.

Dingle House

dalhousie himachal pradesh

If you’re coming with your family, I recommend staying at Dingle House.

It is an ancient British cottage with an old-world rustic charm that is ideally located in a peaceful setting with a view of the hills and clouds. Another benefit is that it is at a walkable distance from the main market.

The rooms are big and spacious for people travelling in a group.

The caretakers cook authentic food and take care of all your needs. We stayed here and overall, we found our experience to be amazing and value for money.

Zostel Dalhousie

If you’re a solo traveller or a backpacker, you can check out Zostel Dalhousie.

They have dorms with clean washrooms, an in-house cafe and helpful staff.

The USP of the property is its location. It’s located on the edge of a hill with a beautiful clearing in the woods. The only drawback is that it is 4.2 km away from the main market.

NotOnMap – Mystic Village

weather dalhousie

NotOnMap is a platform that connects travellers to remote villages across India for people who love to experience and live like a local.

In Dalhousie, they’re available at Pukhri, which is a small village located 2.6 km from Khajjiar. Their properties, including dorms, are on top of a hill, lined one after another.

The houses are made of mud and clay and roofs are made of old slates. They offer stunning views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges.

You’ll also enjoy the fresh food that is prepared by the local community along with their hospitality.

To reach Pukhri, you need to trek for 2 km amidst the Deodar trees and views of Khajjiar.

This place is ideal for people who love backpacking, prefer living with locals or want to connect with nature.

If you want to live at 8000 ft+ in a forest with a view of the mountain ranges, you can try Smart Hill Kalatop. Located inside the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, this place is ideal for people who want to spend time with nature.

The staff is helpful and you’ll also get guided hikes and treks around the property. The rooms are well-maintained and you’ll get food at different restaurants here.

8 Breathtaking Places To Visit In Dalhousie

admin

A summer retreat and sanatorium during the British era, Dalhousie is still the place where the clean forest air and unpeopled woods can help you recharge. Warm sunlight, clear skies, birdsong and views of the Himalayas – you’ll be spoiled . There’s no doubt that Dalhousie is a mystical landscape. When you treat yourself to a trip here, make sure you visit the top 8 breathtaking places to visit in Dalhousie.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Finding an entirely green pocket in a city can be difficult but that’s not the case in Dalhousie. You look to your right? Trees. Left? Yep, more greenery. Anywhere you look, nothing but greenery, and at no point do you get tired of it! One such place that’s the epitome of this exact quality of Dalhousie is the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is the ideal spot to take a hike under the shelter of towering deodar and fir trees that selectively let sunlight filter through. For company, you’ll have deer prancing around and the sound of birds chirping to themselves or possibly babbling about you.

Kalatop wildlife sanctuary, places to visit in Dalhousie

The entire sanctuary covers a space of 30.69 km and there are specific marked trails that are safe to go on during the day . December to February is also a great time to visit Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary to feel like you’re actually part of a winter wonderland only seen in snowglobes. Make snow angels, post a billion stories, Kalatop is the perfect little place for it all.

Distance from Gandhi Chowk, the central hub of Dalhousie – 10.8 km (approximately 45 mins away)

Dainkund Peak

Dainkund Peak is the highest point in Dalhousie, giving visitors an unobstructed 360° view of the entire place. The trek to the peak falls in the beginner level category so even if you’ve not exercised in forever, you’d still be able to make it to the top without struggling. It’s one of those places to visit in Dalhousie that make you truly appreciate nature.

‘Life is about the journey not the destination’ – that old saying certainly applies here. Hiking to Dainkund Peak is like the ‘don’t rush’ challenge for real , since the trail is too scenic to ignore. Also, keep in mind that if you visit anytime from December to February this place would be covered entirely in snow and bears a complete change of scenery.

places to visit in Dalhousie, Daikund peak

Did you know? – The hills are alive with the sound of music in Dainkund, literally! Dainkund Hills are referred to as the ‘singing hills’ of India . When the wind passes through the serene hills and valleys, it creates a sound that makes it seem like it sings. It’s not like actual musical, but more like the wind here is being super talkative.

Distance from Gandhi Chowk, the central hub of Dalhousie – 12.1 km (approximately 30 mins away)

Chamera Lake

The view of this picturesque lake would easily remind you of a picture from a desk calendar at a tourist office. What’s the view? A pristine snake-shaped lake cutting through a mountain belt, pretty much a visual treat.

Chamera lake, places to visit in Dalhousie

Chamera lake is a famous tourist spot and when there, indulge in activities like trying some snacks from the food stalls around or taking a boat ride . There are powerboats and speed boats available, so pick the ride that is suitable to you. We’d say Chamera is that perfect picnic spot where you can chill with a book, stroll around and take in that relaxing lake view.

Distance from Gandhi Chowk, the central hub of Dalhousie – 52.6 km (approximately 2 hours away)

Jot Pass is a spot where tourists take a break from the road to digest the view of the scenic Dhauladhar chain of mountains . But we must warn you – it can get so scenic that it tempts you to take your eyes off the road. Do that for too long and you’ll find yourself plunging over a cliff edge. You need to be careful just like you would be extra careful while maneuvering through any other mountain pass. Do your best to avoid getting distracted with the scenery. Always stop your vehicle at the side of the road at a tourist junction where you see benches with sheds to sit and capture the view.

Jot Pass

Jot also gets less attention from the usual places to visit in Dalhousie so it won’t be as crowded. There is an ‘I Love Jot’ sign that you can pose with for that classic touristy pic. If you want to just stretch your legs and relax, you can consider dropping by the Jot Nature Park too.

Distance from Gandhi Chowk, the central hub of Dalhousie – 37.7 km (approximately 1.5 hours away)

Bakrota Hills View Point

This is the point in Dalhousie where you’ll probably want to bottle up the fresh air and take it back home with you. Bakrota Hills is a refreshing place to see for stunning views of the majestic Himalayan mountain range. It’s definitely a luxury to stroll here aimlessly, giving your legs the freedom to wander without a plan.

You can easily walk to these hills and don’t need to plan much for the hike. It’s a fairly easy one that even the not-so-young can attempt. That’s one of the beauties of Dalhousie, none of the day excursions are stressful, but have just the right amount of relaxation for your mind and body.

Bakrota Hills

Distance from Gandhi Chowk, the central hub of Dalhousie – 5.3 km (approximately 20 minutes away)

St. John’s Church

Built in 1863 during the British regime, St. John’s Church is the oldest church in Dalhousie. The structure resembles churches found in England and bears Victorian-era architecture. This is a wonderful site to visit if you generally like visiting old churches . You can also consider seeing a few more churches namely – St. Francis (built in 1894), St. Andrew (1903) and St. Patrick (1909).

Churches in Dalhousie

For those history buffs at heart, we even highly recommend that you can drop by the Raizada Hans Raj Memorial Trust Library after you see the church. This library is where you’ll find snippets of what Dalhousie looked like back in the day when the British came here to rejuvenate.

Distance from Gandhi Chowk, the central hub of Dalhousie – Minutes away extremely close to the town center.

Ganji Pahari

Want a hill all to yourself with very few people in sight? Then head to Ganji Pahari, and yes, it literally translates to ‘Bald Hill’. The story behind this odd name is that the top patch of the hill barely has any trees covering it while the rest does, meaning that it’s bald. To an extent it does look like it went bald, but to each their own imagination!

places to visit in dalhousie and khajjiar

The hike to Ganji Pahari is easy, and once you reach the top you’d be happy that you’re not wrestling with passing people or anything else to block your view. For the trek to this bald hill, we suggest beginning at Panchpula (a popular tourist halt in Dalhousie). Most of the treks begin from Panchpula itself so it would be a good point to keep as the base.

Distance from Gandhi Chowk, the central hub of Dalhousie – 5 km away from the town center, extremely close to Bakrota Hills.

A hill station that sits at an elevation of 6,500 feet above sea level, Khajjjiar is covered by a dense cover of pine trees. You can also see the peaks of Dhauladhar mountain ranges in the distance from here. And sure, this may not be one of the places to visit in Dalhousie per se, but a trip to Dalhousie is incomplete without hopping into Khajjiar.

The best thing to do here after you consume the beauty of the place is to walk barefoot. There’s miles of green grass to walk on, just like on a golf course, but you’d even have the company of lush cedar and pine trees. Fresh mountain air, the clear blue sky and flat land makes Khajjiar a comfy little spot to have a picnic.

khajjiar, places to visit in Dalhousie

Did you know? – Envoy Willy P. Blazer, who was the Head of Chancery of Switzerland, was taken aback with the stunning beauty around him when he visited Khajjiar. So much so, that he placed a yellow sign indicating the hill station’s distance from the capital of Switzerland (Bern). The resemblance with Switzerland is believed to be uncanny so if you can’t make it there, you can still have a piece of its beauty in India.

Distance from Gandhi Chowk, the central hub of Dalhousie – 19.3 km (approximately an hour away)
