Paul talks 'Coach Trip' exit

After surviving a record-breaking 33 days of vote-offs, it was a bizarre bust-up with good mates Carla & Angie that led to Paul & Matt's elusive red card. What was the real story behind their exit? Glass of Schnapps in hand, we caught up with coach veteran Paul for a chat about his time on the show.

How did it feel to finally get a red card? "We were absolutely fine with it, because we were absolutely knackered by that point. The first few weeks, we'd talk about where we were going next and get really excited, but towards the end we started talking more about what was going on at home. We were more looking forward to going home than what was coming next."

When did you start to flag? "The last week was quite tough. For no reason, really - they were a great group of people - but we'd been there for so long. When you watch it on TV, you can't really tell how draining it is. It's 16-hour days living out of a suitcase."

It must have felt like you lived on the coach.. "There were some days when it would take five hours to get to an activity. That was quite monotonous and not fun. But if someone had said to us before we went on, 'you can go on a drive with Brendan for five hours', I'd be well up for it! But after a while, the novelty sort of wears off."

Did you ever feel you could last the full 50 days? "I don't think we could have, really. Once we got a bit more tired, we thought we weren't making the most of it and it was best to let someone else have a go. We tried to keep Ron and Debbie on so they could have a longer stint, but as soon as the tiredness set in we didn't have any interest in staying."

Do you think if you'd not been voted off, you might have left of your own accord? "We got voted off on the Friday, but I think Matt and I had agreed that if we were still there on the Tuesday, we'd leave. It was coming to a natural end."

What actually happened to a cause a rift between you and Carla & Angie? "I think the main reason was that we tried to save Ron & Debbie. It was nothing against Vin & Lin at all - we really liked them - but I think because we were really tired, we wanted to let other people have a longer go. To be honest, I was a bit of a tw*t really and didn't really handle it as well as I could have. I've got nothing against Carla and Angie at all, I think they were quite entitled to react the way that they did."

In what way were you a tw*t? "We were obviously really knackered, and on that last day I didn't make an effort to speak to them. I could see it wasn't the way it had been [between us], so I should have probably gone out of my way to speak to them. I never did, so that's entirely my fault. It was obviously going to be an awkward conversation to have as well, so I just kept putting it off and off."

Have you reconciled with them now? "Yeah, we get on really well. We had a night out in Sheffield about a month after everyone got back. We all agreed it was a bit stupid that we fell out, because we got on really well beforehand. So we put it behind us and got drunk."

And how did you really feel about Jenna? "She's lovely. She's great! I don't think getting drunk on Schnapps was the best move."

How about Tam & Jayson? Have you stayed in touch with them? "There's been bits and bobs, but it got a bit dodgy towards the end. I really respect Tam because he's very competitive, like I am, and I think he's a bit gutted they didn't last a bit longer. When he got sent off, he wasn't too chuffed. I think if he was in the same position we were in, he'd probably have done the same as us. To me he took it a bit too personally. But it wasn't anything against them, it's just the way it went."

What caused the Bruce incident? "Well we'd had the weekend off before that, and he'd taken a dislike to Jayson over the weekend. We had that little party on the coach, which probably wasn't the best idea, then he just went absolutely mental. It was quite scary because it was just a small coach. Then Brendan get involved. I think Jayson is a really nice guy, but very outgoing, and you can see there would be a potential personality clash with people who don't find him endearing. Also I think Bruce was adamant about this clique and that Jayson was the ringleader, which wasn't true."

You and Paul are the most successful Coach Trip couple ever. What advice would you give to future contestants hoping for longevity on the show? "Just be yourself, really. We didn't have a gameplan, we just got on naturally with Jenna & Jodie, and Jayson & Tam, then Russ & Caroline came on and we got on really well with them. So we were lucky, really, with the people that came on."

What was your favourite Brendan moment? "When I got really drunk on Schnapps, there was a bit with him consoling me, which was hilarious. The bit with Yannis, too - a really really good double act there!"

So Paul & Matt are gone, but what happens next? Hit 'play' below for your exclusive preview of tonight's show:

Jodie gets voted off Coach Trip

She says it won't spoil her memories of Spain and Portugal

A coach tripper from Hinckley had her exciting tour of Iberia cut short as she was voted off E4 reality TV show Coach Trip.

Jodie Carnall and her team mate Jimmy were booted off the bus headed to Tenerife two and a half weeks into the contest.

The duo were the last of the original pairs to go.

The model, 25, saw the writing was on the wall for ‘Team JJ’ when the newbies began to alienate them at dinnertime, but Jodie said this won’t spoil her memories of Spain and Portugal.

She said: “Jimmy and I are so fortunate and feel so grateful to have shared this experience together.

“We talk everyday without fail and have seen each other numerous times since the show.

“We have had an amazing response on Twitter and other social media platforms.

“I have families message me such wonderful messages and they ask me if I can send them letters and videos to them and their children.”

The game show works with the seven teams travelling to destinations on the coach and completing activities, with a vote each day for which team should go home.

The team with the most votes gets a yellow card, and once a team has two they are sent home, to be replaced by a fresh pair.

Jodie said her favourite activity of the second week was when the tourists tried their hands at wakeboarding.

She said: “I was really nervous because I have a fear of being underwater but was so relieved when I discovered it was a man-made large pool we were doing it in.

“There was lots of frogs in the pool but I didn’t mind this, although I am sure one of them tried to swim up my bikini bottoms.”

Other tough challenges Jodie and bearded Aussie Jimmy faced were a judo class, showjumping and sampling Galician food, while keeping on side with the others was a tricky task.

At one point they had to decide between voting for close friends Ben and Teleka or mother and daughter team Helen and Hannah, with the ladies ultimately getting the yellow card.

Jodie said: “We thought they would understand but Hannah threw her umbrella down and refused to hug us all.

“I discussed with Hannah how I felt about her reaction, and it turns out she was just upset with another contestant, who said that her mum didn’t get involved with anything because of her age.

“Helen was definitely getting involved with everything we did and was amazing.”

The demanding schedule of activities, votes and quick meals meant the teams had little time to appreciate the resorts.

Jodie said: “We only get off the coach to take part in activities before hopping back on and sleeping in a hotel.

“Everything was a fun, exciting, nervous blur.

“I cannot recall where I was at any point - I could have been in Burbage Common for all I knew.”

Jodie has stayed friends with many of the other original teams, with a reunion planned for February.

The reality TV star previously appeared on dating show Take Me Out and is applying to go on Big Brother.

Jodie also recently launched the second edition of a lingerie calendar in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity, available for £10.

JST Coaching & Training

Jodi Sleeper-Triplett, MCC, SCAC, BCC

After a decade in corporate management, Jodi Sleeper-Triplett, Founder & CEO of JST Coaching & Training began her coaching career while volunteering at her son’s elementary school. She was asked to work with the “difficult” and “different” students and knew that these insightful, loving children simply needed support, encouragement and patience to help them succeed, leading her to develop the JST Coaching Model used by thousands of coaches and educational institutions worldwide.

Jodi is a world-renowned expert in student and ADHD/Executive Function coaching and the pioneer of the ADHD student coaching movement at a time when coaching young people was considered unrealistic. Jodi developed the first International Coaching Federation accredited coach training focused on coaching students with ADHD, executive function and learning challenges which is now offered around the world in English, Spanish and Turkish. As the co- founder of the Institute for the Advancement of ADHD Coaching and developer of the coaching model used in the Edge Foundation landmark 2-year coaching research study, Jodi is seen by many of her peers as the foremost authority in the field of student coaching. The JST coaching model is cited by  researchers and academics as the de facto model for coaching students  with ADHD. She has been featured on Behind the Scenes with Lawrence Fishburne, CNN HLN, CBS News Atlanta and on radio programs and in print media nationwide.

Her first book,  Empowering Youth With ADHD: Your Guide to Coaching Adolescents and Young Adults for Coaches, Parents, and Professionals  provides coaches, parents and professionals with a powerful new guide to improving the lives of students with ADHD through coaching. “This is a ‘whole child’ approach,” says Sleeper-Triplett. “Whether it’s a coach, a parent, or a professional, there is a growing desire for people to learn the techniques that work. Coaching is the missing piece of the ADHD intervention enigma.” She is a contributing author of  Becoming Self-Determined: Creating Thoughtful Learners in a Standards-Driven, Admissions-Frenzied Culture, Field & Parker (editors).

Jodi is a Master Certified Coach (ICF), Senior Certified ADHD Coach (IAAC) and a Board-Certified Coach (CCE-Global). A bit about me

I graduated from Central Missouri State University in 1995 with a BS in Special Education. I received a Masters Degree in School Leadership from Benedictine College in 2009. I have taught Special Education and been a Principal at all grade levels, kindergarten through 12th grade. Because, I have worked with students, parents and teachers at every stage of development, my scope covers the “big picture”, not just the current age or grade level. I bring a unique perspective to the coaching world. My time in the elementary, middle, and high school setting provides an impressive web of networking experience, guidance, and professionalism regarding educational needs, development, and achievement in all stages of life.

I have always had a passion for helping others, meeting people where they are, and helping people find success is a part of my DNA. I have a deep love and admiration for the individual human story. Working with parents and educators in an up-close and personal way for over 27 years has been a complete joy and privilege! I love the process of listening, learning, and collaborating when it comes to tackling tough issues, and mapping out a plan to find success, invoke change, and provide hope. For over two decades I have helped families manage moments of transformation and growth, trials and tribulations, heartache and celebration. It’s your turn to celebrate some success, I can’t wait to help you get started!
