Sean Anderson

Sean Anderson is the deuteragonist in Journey to the Center of the Earth and the main protagonist in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . He is played by Josh Hutcherson and is the nephew of Trevor Anderson , the stepson of Hank Parsons and grandson of Alexander Anderson . His father was  Max Anderson who was found dead in Journey to the Center of the Earth.

It is revealed in a leaked write-up of some earlier renditions of the script for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island that Sean used to be a mule for the Sinaloa Cartel's operations in southern California. His horrific backstory was originally to be showcased near the start of the film in a 13-minute action scene depicting his near-death escape from an illegal Tijuana brothel during a violent raid by the Federales targeting Sean's boss. Although the scene was fully rehearsed and produced- even featuring Jason Statham as the Tijuana drug lord fighting off a Mexican police raid- it was decided not much further into production that the scene be removed, and all intext mentions of Sean's experience in Tijuana redacted from the script. It is widely believed that the completed footage for said scene was comprehensively disposed of by its creators, as no evidence of its existence has been recovered save for the aforementioned write-up by an anonymous set crewman. It is considered lost media .

JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND

"fun-filled family adventure".

journey 2 the mysterious island grandpa

What You Need To Know:

(BBB, PP, V, M) Very strong moral worldview with a strong, positive view of America and Americans, plus a celebration of family bonds; no foul language, but a reference to big bird dropping and man falls into goo in giant lizard egg; light action violence includes teenager on motorcycle tries to escape police, motorcycle jumps into pool, helicopter enters strange hurricane and crashes on island, giant lizard and giant birds chase people, people ride giant bumblebees, electric eel endangers teenager and his stepfather, dangerous rock slides, teenager sprains ankle badly; no sex scenes but older teenage boy admires older teenage girl, who’s pretty, when he sees her, they kiss at end, and they fall down together, but nothing salacious occurs; no nudity; no alcohol; no smoking; and, teenager gets off easy after breaking into a satellite facility to retrieve a message and evading police, plus teenager has shaky relationship with stepfather, but everything’s resolved positively by the end.

More Detail:

JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is a fun-filled adventure for the whole family. The goal is mostly to entertain, a task the movie does well, but there’s also a strong pro-family message for viewers as the story runs its course.

The movie opens with young Sean Anderson getting in trouble with the police for breaking into a satellite facility and trying to avoid capture. His firefighter stepfather, Hank, gets everyone not to press charges. He tries to communicate with Sean, but the two don’t get along. Eventually, however, Sean opens up to Hank and tells him he was trying to receive a coded satellite message from his grandfather. Sean believes the message tells him the location of the actual “Mysterious Island” from the book by Jules Verne.

They decode the message together and discover it leads to some coordinates near the island of Palau in the South Pacific. Sean wants to go there, and Hank agrees to take him. He thinks that, once Sean discovers the island doesn’t exist, they can go back home to Dayton, Ohio.

Of course, when they get there, they discover that the island does exist. To get there, they have to ride a tour helicopter into the eye of a strange hurricane. Along for the ride is the copter’s owner, Gaby, and his pretty teenage daughter, Kailani.

On the island, they find Sean’s grandfather, Alexander. Alexander tells them the island is the location of the lost island of Atlantis. Every 140 years, the island disappears into the sea again because of volcano activity. Sean’s stepfather was a Navy Seal. He discovers the island is already starting to sink again. The only way to escape is to find Captain Nemo’s hidden submarine, the Nautilus.

JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is another successful piece of family entertainment from the folks behind 2008’s JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, which told Sean’s first adventure into Jules Verne’s universe. Michael Caine adds a touch of class and heart as the grandfather. Also, Dwayne Johnson adds some heartfelt entertainment of his own. In fact, he even sings a surprisingly funny, heartwarming, and tuneful version of “What a Wonderful World” in one scene! Like the previous movie, this is a science fiction movie for families with pre-teen children, so some purists may be upset, but not this particular purist or his MOVIEGUIDE® colleagues.

Best yet, the new movie seems even more family-friendly than the previous movie. Younger children will be more excited and thrilled than scared. There’s no intense violence in JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, but there’s plenty of action and suspense, laced with some light, playful humor. The movie eventually delivers a positive message celebrating family bonds. Also, there’s no foul language or other crude content. The filmmakers and folks at Walden Media and Warner Bros. should be congratulated for keeping this series going by providing another entertaining, family-friendly entry.

journey 2 the mysterious island grandpa

Now streaming on:

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" looks like nothing so much as one of those live-action adventures that Disney used to grind out in the 1950s — and hey, here's Captain Nemo's Nautilus to prove it. Also, a tree house to humble "Swiss Family Robinson," which contains a short-wave radio that has been assembled from old spoons, I think I heard.

The movie is very, very loosely a sequel to " Journey to the Center of the Earth ," with only two connections: It's inspired by a Jules Verne novel, and it co-stars young Josh Hutcherson as the hero Sean. The film opens with him on a motorcycle and being chased by cops, but not to worry; all he did was break into a satellite-tracking station to boost the power on a message for help sent by his grandfather from a lost island in the Pacific.

Sean, whose father in the first film ( Brendan Fraser ) has disappeared (from the cast, anyway), now has to deal with Hank ( Dwayne Johnson , aka the Rock). Hank is his new stepdad. Josh and Hank make friends by decrypting grandfather's message; Hank glances at it and intuits that the two-syllable words stand for dots and one-syllable words stand for dashes, which means Grandpa has had enough free time on his remote island to figure out a way to make Morse code several times longer than it previously was. Unanswered is why grandfather would encrypt a call for help.

This Hank, what a swell guy. He proposes that the two of them fly off to the Pacific and find Grandpa. On arrival somewhere, they hire a tourist helicopter pilot named Gabato, played by Luis Guzman as another one of those low-comedy guys who gets all worked up and is scared of stuff. (I enjoyed a reprise of this classic shot: Gabato runs toward camera, falls on stomach, looks up …and up … and up.)

Gabato has a daughter named Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), a Polynesian beauty who wears a tank top and Daisy Dukes throughout the film. These four fly off in the helicopter, are trapped in a Force Five hurricane that rips it to pieces and are lucky enough to find themselves alive on the beach of the Mysterious Island.

This is your complete island. It has an active volcano; waterfalls with no apparent water sources streaming down cliffs; elephants the size of dogs, and giant lizards that are nowhere big enough to account for the size of their eggs. (Josh falls through the shell of one, splashes in a pool of yolk and is attacked by an unborn lizard chick.) Also on the island is the lost city of Atlantis, even though it's in the wrong ocean, and bees so big Sean and Kailani can both ride on the back of one. And Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather, played by Michael Caine , who will not be editing this role into his videos about how to act in movies.

I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff. The director, Brad Peyton , apparently intended it as a genial parody of countless other movies in this spirit. There is, for example, a scene were Sean, Grandpa, Kailani and Gabato all sit around the old campfire and listen while Hank strums a ukulele and sings "What a Wonderful World." And I mean he sings it: every word of three verses. It's not every day you see the Rock channeling Gene Autry.

Sean deduces that Verne's novel contains everything they need to know, and this comes in handy when the volcano explodes, and the island begins to sink into the sea. Sure enough, Captain Nemo's submarine is still hidden underwater. Hank and Sean, trusting Verne, dive off a high cliff, and while holding their breath and swimming underwater, are able to (1) find the sub, (2) open the hatch by tugging and twisting it, (3) swim inside, (4) push a lever to fill it with air, and (5) get the power generator working by jump-starting it with an electric eel.

This is transcendently goofy. It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and good-natured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors. Johnson is such a good sport, he even shows young Sean how to impress girls by flexing your pecs so quickly that nuts will ricochet off them. I can't think of any reason to pay extra for the 3-D.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island: Film Review

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Still - H 2012

A menagerie of outsized fauna is royally upstaged by Dwayne Johnson ’s dancing man-boobs in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , yet another from the Verne-adaptation school of fanciful family adventure.

A 3D update of one of the less widely read Jules Verne classics, it follows the 2008 hit J ourney to the Center of the Earth , a pioneer in the 3D resurrection that reached its zenith a year later with Avatar.

The Bottom Line Jules Verne rejuvenated for the iPhone age.

Verne was a fantasist nonpareil, but his 19th century imagination would surely have balked at the notion of berries pinging wildly off The Rock’s pecs as they do in this kid-friendly excursion from Canadian director Brad Peyton ( Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore ).

The targeted demographic, however, will gladly hop aboard for a cornball ride through colorful, often glaringly phony sets popping with miniature elephants, gold-spewing volcanoes and a monster-truck-sized lizard.

For the adults, there’s the edifying sight of Michael Caine astride a giant bee.

The New Line and Contrafilm presentation, bowing in Australia January 19 before a global roll-out that reaches North America on February 10, can expect to at least equal the $250 million box office drawn by 2008’s Journey.

Josh Hutcherson , whose teen idol status is set to hit critical mass with his upcoming role in The Hunger Games , returns as intrepid young explorer Sean Anderson. In Journey, he was accompanied by his uncle (played by Brendan Fraser ), but this time round a cheerily self-aware Johnson, as his Navy vet stepfather Hank, is the responsible adult on board.

Sean is now a rebellious 17-year-old and skeptical of the new father-figure chosen by his mom ( Kristen Davis ). The requisite male bonding ensues when Sean intercepts a coded distress signal which leads the pair to an uncharted island in the middle of the South Pacific and into the eccentric vortex of Sean’s adventurer grandfather, Alexander (Caine).

Equal and opposite attraction emerges in the form of the headstrong Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), daughter of helicopter pilot Gabato ( Luis Guzmán , providing stale comic relief).

The island is a rainbow-filled world where evolutionary anomalies abound but, as the band of adventurers skips from one supersized Survivor -like challenge to the next, one can’t help feeling the creative potential of Verne’s vision is wasted.

There’s certainly nothing much here to frighten the children, although Johnson’s ukulele-accompanied rendition of “What a Wonderful World” might come close. The dense scientific discussion that characterized Verne’s “The Mysterious Island” is boiled down to an occasional spurt of exposition – and an iPhone cameo – as screenwriters Richard Outten, Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn braid together elements from that novel, together with Robert Louis Stevenson ’s Robinson Crusoe and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, to produce an episodic storyline.

Like Jane Austen , Verne has provided a rich seam for Hollywood screenwriters to mine long after his death. There have been various cinematic adaptations of his 1874 novel; the most fondly remembered is 1961’s Mysterious Island, celebrated for Ray Harryhausen ’s stop-motion animation and the buckskin micro-dress worn by Beth Rogan . That film followed the 1959 version of J ourney to the Center of the Earth in the same way Journey 2 follows 2008’s Journey , but was considered a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in that the megalomaniac Captain Nemo also featured.

Nemo is referenced obliquely here, but a glorious steam-punk rendering of the Nautilus is featured prominently, eventually getting a jump-start from a gigantic electric eel in one of the film’s most inventive set pieces.

Where the 1961 film took its make-believe seriously, Peyton is content creating a series of visual spectacles. Johnson sets the tone with an affable goofiness, although never ignites the spark that his labored banter with Caine requires.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Dove Review

This second “journey” is well worth taking! This is one of the best “family-oriented” films we have seen in sometime. It offers something for everyone: breakneck action and adventure, romance, fantastic special effects featuring giant lizards and bees, and quotations and references from Jules Verne’s classics. The 3D effects are some of the best in recent memory.

In this follow-up to “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, young Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) is a few years older, rides a motorcycle, and is wary of his step-father Hank, played by “The Rock”, Dwayne Johnson. Yet it is Hank who helps Sean decipher an encrypted message from his grandfather. To help him and hopefully form a bond, Hank accompanies Sean to Palau to try to locate his grandfather. They travel by helicopter and the father-daughter tour guides, Gabato (Luis Guzmán) and Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) wind up sticking around much longer than they planned. Gabato provides comic relief and his pretty daughter Kailani draws Sean’s undivided attention. Soon they locate Sean’s grandpa, played by Michael Caine, and the adventures are on. They run into much more than they bargained for including some amazing creatures on the Mysterious Island. The island itself is beautiful, featuring lush foliage, rushing waterfalls, fantastic peaks and gorgeous butterflies. Ultimately, the would-be heroes pursue Captain Nemo’s submarine, the Nautilus, as their only hope of getting off the island before a surprising catastrophe occurs.

Here is a movie which features wonderful themes such as a young man bonding with his step-father, and finding his first love. The literary references to Jules Verne are inspiring and educational. You’ve never been on a journey like this one. This is one fun ride and we highly recommend this movie, and award it our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal and five Doves to boot! This is one movie you can truly enjoy with your family. So whose up for an adventure?

Movie Review: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a follow on to the 2008 worldwide hit “Journey to the Center of the Earth” which starred Brendan Fraser. In this one, Fraser has been unceremoniously replaced by former WWE star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who plays shunned step-dad Hank Parsons to spoiled Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson).

As Hank desperately searches for a way to connect with his uncooperative step-son, an unexpected opportunity arises in the form of a mysterious coded distress signal that Sean receives and needs help deciphering. Hank puts his days in the Navy to good use and cracks the code for Sean with relative ease (this is not his only talent he’s retained as he proves later on in the film). In need of a ride to a mysterious island (coordinates provided by message) they enlist helicopter pilot Gabato (Luiz Guzman) and his strong-willed and moody daughter Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) to get them there. After a very stormy, eventful flight, they eventually reach their destination, stumble across Sean’s grandfather (Michael Caine) and begin a fun adventure. A fun adventure, I fear, that’s not intended for adult viewers.

The one thing that adults (and kids) will certainly commend, however, is the beautiful CGI realm dreamed up for this forgotten island. It is full of vibrant, luscious colors, housing a topsy-turvy world where everything big becomes small and vice versa. Things, like lizards, that we take for granted and see as being mostly harmless suddenly became predators in their giant form. Also, I never thought I’d see the day when an elephant could be described as cute, but within the first few minutes of our protagonists arriving on the uncharted isle a herd of adorable miniature elephants ran past. Giant bees proved themselves to be very useful when the group had no other method of getting up a steep mountain (although how they managed to steer them remains unclear).

Movie review of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012) by The Critical Movie Critics

The plot was unsurprisingly non-surprising. The plot points were there, but they had been done to the death already in other films of similar nature. There was also an inordinate amount of annoying conveniences — elements put in place solely to further the plot along to predetermined outcomes. One such example was when the adventurers realized that Sean’s grandpa had inaccurately predicted the date of when the mystical island was due to sink. It turned out to be far sooner than he expected, in fact, only a few short hours away!

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island does have its share of comedic moments, with most of them being delivered by Guzman and, quite surprisingly, by ‘The Rock’ himself. Johnson, it turns out, is full of charisma and has a natural comedic presence about him. His infamous “popping of the pecks” party trick, which no doubt viewers will have seen in the trailer, is prominently used (unfortunately, this got pushed too far after the fifth or sixth time of it being repeated). There was also a few chuckles to be had from the dynamic between Johnson and Caine (I bet you never expected to see those two as a comedy double act!). And showing off yet another string to his bow, Johnson demonstrated a softer side to his persona when he gives a bizarre and randomly unnecessary rendition of ‘What a Wonderful World’ whilst sitting around a camp fire.

Others, like Sean and Kailani, do not fare so well. Their lack of warmth made them un-endearing and the “will they, won’t they” theme running throughout the film was completely uninspiring. It’s clear that Kailani was intended to be received as an independent, headstrong character but she just came across as petulant and emotionally distant. Therefore it begged disbelief, when, halfway through the movie, she suddenly developed a heart and preached to Sean that having a dad who cares too much is better than one who doesn’t care at all.

Nowadays, highlighting how difficult it can be for a new partner to be accepted by their new partner’s children and how important familial relationships are is an admirable moral to espouse. Too bad it was done so clumsily and required a fair amount of digging to uncover. After all, considering the amount of work involved, it shouldn’t have been upstaged so easily by Johnson’s popping pecks.

Ultimately, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has all the necessary ingredients for the recipe for a perfect kid’s film (bugs, colors, silliness, fast action). The odd moments to keep the adults entertained are far too few and not particularly good (Caine riding a giant bee is a highlight?) though. Basically, it’s a visually stunning throwaway.

Where Was Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filmed?

Arka Mukhopadhyay of Where Was Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filmed?

Brad Peyton helmed the blockbuster adventure movie ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,’ the second installment in the Jules Verne-inspired ‘Journey’ series. Upon discovering a signal from Sean’s grandfather Alexander Anderson, Sean and his stepdad, Hank, set out for a sprawling adventure filled with lush greenery and uncanny creatures. They arrive in the far-flung island country of Palau, regroup with Alexander thanks to a cyclone, and embark on a search for the lost city of Atlantis.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson delivers a hilarious performance alongside Michael Caine , Luis Guzmán, Vanessa Hudgens , and Josh Hutcherson. Most of the story unveils in the turbulent pacific, while the finale takes place on a dreamy island. However, you may seek to identify the locations where the movie was filmed. If that is the case, let us divulge before you everything we know.

Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filming Locations

‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ was filmed in locations in and around the U.S., especially in Hawaii. Filming commenced on October 25, 2010, and was wrapped up by December 15 of the same year. Let us now take you to the specific locations where the movie was filmed!

O’ahu, Hawaii

Most parts of the movie were filmed in Hawaii, possibly including the Atlantis scenes. The director took his team to Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000-acre vast nature reserve, event venue, cattle ranch, and most importantly, a famous filming destination in Hawaii. Situated at 49560 Kamehameha Highway in the community of Ka’a’awa, at around 24 miles from Honolulu, the ranch is a popular tourist destination in the city.

journey 2 the mysterious island grandpa

The reserve has been home to more than 79 movie productions, including blockbusters such as ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘ 50 First Dates ,’ and ‘Pearl Harbor.’ Look for the scene where they are heading towards the submarine, at around 46 minutes mark. You can locate the open space where filming of ‘ Jurassic Park ‘ took place.

journey 2 the mysterious island grandpa

Several scenes were also filmed at the Waimea Bay and its adjacent Waimea Bay Beach Park, located at 61-31 Kamehameha Highway in the community of Haleiwa along the north shore of O’ahu. Due to its situation at the mouth of the Waimea River and the proximity of several tourist places, Waimea Bay sees footfall all around the year. In the summer, you can go out surfing, while in the winter, you can enjoy the view of the towering waves with a bonfire.

Wilmington, North Carolina

The production team carried out several scenes in a controlled studio environment. The movie presumably contains several CGI-aided sequences, and the scenes were possibly developed in a full-service production facility in the community of Wilmington off the coast of North Carolina. EUE / Screen Gems Studios, a movie production facility located at 1223 North 23rd Street, lent its premises to film scenes.

journey 2 the mysterious island grandpa

10 Best Movies Based On Jules Verne Books, Ranked

  • Jules Verne's work has inspired numerous movie adaptations and is the foundation for some of the earliest science fiction films.
  • Some Jules Verne adaptations are entertaining and enjoyable, while others are outdated and not required viewing.
  • The film "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (2008) successfully updates Verne's classic story with modern special effects and remains fun to watch.

Jules Verne is undoubtedly one of the most prominent authors in science fiction , and its no wonder that his works have inspired countless movie adaptations. One of the most translated writers in human history, the French author has written legendary tales like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Around the World in 80 Days . Verne's daring imagination put him far ahead of his time, and it's no surprise that movie studios have sought to replicate his sense of wonder with multiple live-action adaptations of Jules Verne stories .

Jules Verne's work has become the foundation for some of the earliest films in the science fiction genre , some of which even hold up today remarkably well as enjoyable, adventurous romps through the imagination. The mid-to-late 2000s saw a resurgence of Jules Verne films as well, to varying degrees of success, with studios hoping to recapture the joy and nostalgia of the earliest films to adapt Verne's books for a new generation. With so many familiar titles, it's a difficult task to distinguish the very best depictions of Jules Verne's novels over the years.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth

An easily-overlooked made-for-TV movie, the two-part Journey to the Center of the Earth special was a solid attempt at getting to the center of what made Verne's original story so memorable. The film is decidedly slow-moving and low-budgeted, with some creature effects occasionally bordering the precipice of acceptable for a shoestring budget, but the C-List actors can often bring in decent performances amid the campy set-dressing. Despite it's many flaws, the two-part film is an entertaining, knowingly campy jog through Verne's beloved tale of subterranean exploration.

Master Of The World

Master of the World is the sole film to adapt Jules Verne's novel of the same name, and when compared to his other, more well-known stories, it's easy to see why. The narrative of a rich maniac dedicated to the idea of threatening the world's governments into laying down their arms isn't quite as whimsical as Verne's other premises. As for the film, despite rich talent from the likes of a young Charles Bronson and the legendary Vincent Price , the special effects are especially outdated, even for the time period . Master of the World is fun, but not required viewing.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Journey 2: the mysterious island.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the follow-up to 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth. The film takes place four years after the original, showing Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson teaming up with Hank, his stepfather, to find his lost grandfather. Due to scheduling issues, Brendan Fraser wasn't able to return as Trevor Anderson but was replaced by Dwayne Johnson as the film's lead.

Release Date 2012-02-12

Director Brad Peyton

Cast Josh Hutcherson, Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, Dwayne Johnson

This semi-adaptation picks up where 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth left off, replacing Brendan Fraser with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. As the passable action adventure delves into the incredible isle, the tone rides a strange line, at once too scary for younger viewers and too subdued for older ones. Amid mediocre CGI and all-too subdued performances, the best thing that can be said about Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was how it pioneered the art of throwing Johnson into a jungle, later done better in films like Jungle Cruise and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle .

Around The World In 80 Days

Though the idea of circumnavigating the globe in the span of 80 days is now a triviality, in Verne's time, such a time was the stuff of science fiction. The 1956 take on the story is an incredibly grand adventure comedy with a runtime that feels nearly as long as the titular journey itself. The international cast is crammed with stars of Hollywood's Golden Age , who had enough charisma between them to earn the film an early Academy Award for Best Picture. Today, the spectacle and aged humor can be best appreciated as a museum of 50s stardom.

Starring a young Josh Hutcherson and Brendan Fraser, still hot off the success of The Mummy trilogy , 2008's Journey To The Center Of The Earth had all the makings of an action-adventure hit. Being the first to truly update one of Verne's classic stories with modern special effects, the film still looks great 15 years later, even if it is marred by several obvious moments clearly meant to be enjoyed in the context of a 3-D theater. Adapting the classic adventure about as well as it could have, Journey To The Center Of The Earth isn't revolutionary, but undeniably fun.

While most adaptations of Verne's work make at least some departures from the source material, 2004's Around The World In 80 Days completely re-imagines the story as a raucous action-comedy. Though critically-panned at the time, the film is endlessly re-watchable today , with eye-popping action choreography courtesy of Jackie Chan's Passepartout and deadpan comedic timing from Steve Coogan's Phineas Fogg. If the anachronisms and deviations from Verne's novel can be forgiven, Around The World In 80 Days is a creative globe-trotting adventure that doesn't get the respect it deserves.

There's simply no replicating the cheesy fun of the original Journey To The Center Of The Earth , an earnest science fiction adventure movie that wears its heart on its sleeve. The special effects are certainly dated, but it's hard not to wring a certain level of charm out of the delicately hand-painted backgrounds and practical lizardman costumes. Beyond the addition of the deliciously dastardly villain, Count Saknussemm, the film is also one of the most faithful to Verne's work, a commendable effort in and of itself.

The Mysterious Island

The Mysterious Island is one of Jules Verne's lesser-known stories, but the 1961 film of the same name takes every advantage of the novel's conceits. Following a group of Union soldiers in the Civil War who escape prison in a hot air balloon only to wash up on a bizarre uncharted island, the film's sense of tension only ever dials up, as the heroes contend with grimy human pirates and giant fauna rendered by the talent of stop-motion legend Ray Harryhausen . Not the deepest narrative, this thrilling tale of danger holds up decades later remarkably well as a harrowing odyssey.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

One of Disney's earliest forays into live-action storytelling, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea presented the aquatic crew of the Nautilus with untold dangers then-undreamed of by 50s audiences. Beyond the great creature and sci-fi technology designs that still hold up today, the film offers substantially more heart than most other Verne adaptations, taking the time to acclimate the viewer with its intrepid adventurers. It's no wonder that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was influential enough to earn a spot as a Disneyland mainstay even seven decades after its original release.

A Trip To The Moon

It's only fitting that the world's first science fiction movie sprung from the mind of one of the genre's most influential authors. Presenting early audiences with a dizzying idea of space travel long before the first astronaut was born, A Trip To The Moon 's hypnotic, almost feverish visuals and brisk 14-minute run time assaults the imagination with a yet-unmatched spectacle of dreamlike reality. From the Moon's incredulous face to the dancing insectoid aliens that vanish in a literal puff of smoke, A Trip To The Moon is by far the most influential science fiction film courtesy of Jules Verne.
