Behind the Scenes at the One and Only Bryant Denny Stadium

It is the heart of our one and only Tuscaloosa, visible from almost everywhere in town and the center of sports and fun: The University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium ! Home of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, it turns into the ultimate hotspot in town during football season. It doesn’t stop there, as it is a special location year-round! We’re going to show you why and take you on the behind the scenes tour through Bryant-Denny Stadium!

First view of the field on our Bryant-Denny Stadium tour

First view of the field on our Bryant-Denny Stadium tour.

For somebody who has never been to the stadium, even standing in front of it is mind blowing: The walls rise so high, you can’t seem to wrap your mind around this massive building! It was named after UA’s former president George H. Denny and longtime coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Entering the stadium at the south end zone, the first stop of the tour is the Donor Hall of Recognition, which is located right above the entrance. Here you can see all the generous donors that supported the UA Athletics Department with donations of one million dollars or more on beautiful portraits! The Crimson Tide Foundation itself gives away $16 Million of athletics scholarships every year, supporting young people in sports like football, baseball, soccer, golf, tennis, rowing and much more!

Next, on the tour you walk around the field on an upper level, getting a first glimpse on the field and the breathtaking view of Tuscaloosa from above the treetops! While on the upper level, we learned some interesting facts such as Bryant-Denny-Stadium was opened in 1929 and meanwhile has a capacity of 101,821 seats – which makes it the 8th largest stadium in the world! Also, during a game day, the stadium puts out 10,000 gallons of fountain drinks and 18.000 bottles of water to go with the concessions, leading to a total of 1 ton of trash!

Up next is the press-room: Here you can see the seats for the reporters behind a giant glass pane with a perfect view of the field and you even can take a seat on the commentator’s chairs! Located right next to it is the Presidential Box: An incredibly lavish lounge with seats for 200 of the UA president’s closest friends. On the other side of the ranks, you can see another row of windows that contains the 159 Sky Boxes: Private lounges with up to 75 seats that can be rented – for the trifle of a $500,000 donation to get your name on the ten years long waiting list! You better hurry up to make your reservation!

In the maze of the inside of the stadium, the tour shows you The Zone, located right above the north end zone with a view on the Walk of Champions. Members can access that beautiful hall during games and it can also be rented for events, even for wedding receptions! Say I do and Roll Tide!

Then the tour finally enters the holy halls: The Crimson Tide’s locker room!

Touching the nose of Bear Bryant for good luck!

Touching the nose of Bear Bryant for good luck!

Standing in the huge room with the noble wooden lockers and leather stools, you can literally feel the Tide’s spirit!

Lockers of the players set up before the game

Lockers of the players set up before the game

Doing it like the players, you have to rub the nose of the Paul Bryant plaque and hit “WIN” above the doors before leaving the locker room for good luck! Then your way leads through the famous tunnel straight onto the field! You feel so incredibly small standing at that gateway, even without a hundred thousand fans cheering for you! And have you ever realized how gigantic the field goal is? You sure will do when you stand right underneath it!

Standing under the goal post at the end of the team's tunnel!

Standing under the goal post at the end of the team’s tunnel!

Walking around the field, you can take pictures that are memories for eternity. Side fact: It takes 120 hours of work and 500 cans of dye to paint the lines and signs on the field! Right across the Crimson Tide’s tunnel and locker, you can enter the one of the most iconic locations in the stadium: The Fail Room – which is nothing else than the locker room for the visiting teams. You can’t miss the obvious differences to the Tide’s locker room. But still, Alabama has one of the nicer, almost luxurious visitor locker rooms with stools and white walls – compared to Iowa, who for example painted theirs bright pink because of scientific proof that staring at it induced bad headaches.

And with that fun fact, the amazing tour comes to its end and leaves you feeling like a champion! Roll Tide!

Tuscaloosa to Auburn: Football Championship Tour

By lee sentell, table of contents, see why the tide’s magic number is 18, learn about nick saban’s own dynasty, where to stay and eat in tuscaloosa, stop in birmingham, discover how auburn’s wait for a crown paid off, get to know auburn's three heisman trophy winners, where to stay.

Tuscaloosa to Auburn: Football Championship Tour

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers are cross-state rivals in football, but together they have won multiple SEC and national football championship titles. Players from the schools have won four Heisman Trophies since 2009, including the first back-to-back trophies awarded to different universities from the same state.

Sports fans can visit the campuses at Tuscaloosa and Auburn to see the handsome Waterford crystal trophies that are surrounded by other awards, photos, and athletic memorabilia dating back more than 120 years. In between is the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in downtown Birmingham where stories of inducted athletes are showcased. Since football is the top sport in the state, the Football Championship Tour is naturally named Road Trip #1.

Since the team from Tuscaloosa has dominated the national championships during the past decade, it is the logical starting point for your tour. Travel I-20/59 to exit 71 and follow the signs to the campus and Bryant Drive and park at the rear of the Paul Bryant Museum (300 Paul W. Bryant Dr.; 205-348-4668) . The museum is open seven days a week except for major holidays.

The Paul W. Bryant Museum is dark and quiet, like a religious shrine. This is appropriate since Tide fans believed that the coach could walk on water.

The first thing you notice is the museum is dark and quiet, like a chapel or a religious shrine. This is appropriate, since Tide fans believed that “Bear” Bryant, the most successful football coach of his era, could walk on water. His teams won six of the school’s 18 national championships. Spotlights direct your attention to numerous displays of team and game photos and lots of trophies. During his 25-year tenure as Alabama’s head coach, he amassed six national championships and 13 conference championships. When he retired in 1982, he held the record for most wins as head coach in collegiate football history with 323, a record that lasted until 1996.

A few steps away is the eight-pound Waterford trophy in the shape of a football that you came to see. The symbol of the 2009 national championship gleams under a light in front of a photo of Coach Nick Saban holding the trophy Alabama won for beating Texas in the title game. It represents not only the Tide’s 13th national title, but announces that a dynasty under a new coach is under way.

The Crimson Tide was ranked in The AP’s top 25 for 64 consecutive weeks while winning national titles over Texas 37-21 and LSU 21-0 within three years.

After winning a title at LSU, Saban has won six national championships at Tuscaloosa during his first 13 years at the university. The Crimson Tide was ranked in The AP’s top 25 for 64 consecutive weeks while winning national titles over Texas 37-21 and LSU 21-0 within three years. The actual trophy Bama received at the Rose Bowl resides in the offices of the athletic department. The $30,000 replica you see was bought by the museum. In 2009, running back Mark Ingram won the 75th Heisman Trophy, the first ever for a Bama player. (Coach Bryant promoted his teams, not individual players.) Running back Derrick Henry won it six years later, and receiver DeVonta Smith won it six years after Henry.

To see where many of the legendary football victories have taken place, walk four blocks over to Bryant-Denny Stadium (920 Paul W. Bryant Dr.; 205-348-3600) . Planning for its expansion began shortly after Saban arrived. It had a capacity of 101,821 by the 2017 season, and is the eighth largest in the nation.

Walk around to the north side to see large bronze statues of coaches Wallace Wade, Frank Thomas, Gene Stallings and Nick Saban, who have each won football championships.

Stay overnight at the Hotel Capstone (320 Bryant Drive.; 800-477-2262) on the opposite side of the Bryant Conference Center from the museum.

Don’t leave Tuscaloosa without eating Dreamland Barbecue (5535 15th Ave. E., off Jug Factory Rd.; 205-758-8135) . It has been a staple in the area since 1958.

En route to see the state’s other crystal trophy in Auburn, head east on I-59/20 for 56 miles toward Birmingham, where the Tide and Tigers played the “Iron Bowl” from 1948 through 1988 at the neutral site of Legion Field (400 Graymont Ave. W.; 205-254-2391) . The ticket distribution was split 50/50.

Auburn had long contended that Birmingham, less than an hour from Tuscaloosa, was not a “neutral” field, and after years of lobbying, succeeded in having their home games against Alabama played in Auburn. The Tigers played their first game against Alabama in Jordan-Hare stadium in 1989, when they upset the second-ranked Tide.

The big game played here now is the annual Magic City Classic. The rivalry game between the Alabama State University Hornets from Montgomery and the Alabama A&M Bulldogs from Huntsville, two historically black universities, often attracts 65,000 fans. Almost that many, without tickets, tailgate outside during the game.

Head to downtown Birmingham to learn about many sports legends at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame (2150 Richard Arrington Blvd. N.; 205-323-6665) . The museum is housed adjacent to the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex.

Since 1967, the Hall of Fame has been the benchmark for other sports museums across the nation. More than 5,000 sports artifacts are elegantly displayed in the 30,000-square foot museum. When ESPN ranked the top 100 athletes of the past century, five out of the top 15 greatest ever were from Alabama and honored here. They are Jesse Owens, Hank Aaron, Joe Louis, Willie Mays and Carl Lewis. Allow a couple of hours to do your visit justice. When you leave, notice the headquarters of the Southeastern Conference across the street. Former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer is considered to be the "father" of the BCS.

While in Birmingham, drive to the Southside neighborhood to see the historic marker identifying where Bama and Auburn first played on Feb. 22, 1893. It is on Clairmont Avenue (an extension of University Boulevard) east of St. Vincent’s Hospital in front of the BBVA bank administrative center.

Auburn coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan guided his 1957 team through an undefeated season, beating Bama 40-0 in the season finale to win The Associated Press football championship title. Bama responded by hiring Paul Bryant away from Texas A&M and initiated the modern era of Southern football domination. Shug Jordan and Bear Bryant coached the rival teams for years, with Bama winning most of the time.

Tiger quarterback Pat Sullivan won the Heisman Trophy in 1971. Coach Pat Dye amassed a 99-39-4 record from 1981 until 1992, along the way ending a nine-year drought against Bama, and Bo Jackson won the Heisman Trophy in 1985. Terry Bowden coached Auburn to an undefeated season in 1993 and Tommy Tuberville’s 2004 team went undefeated, but neither won a championship.

Quarterback Cam Newton led Auburn to a perfect 14-0 season in 2010, defeating Oregon in the championship game and winning the third Heisman for a Tiger player.

Auburn had a museum tucked inside its athletics department headquarters for a number of years, complete with trophies and a replica of the famous Toomer’s Drugs Corner where toilet paper hung in faux trees. (For decades, Auburn students have “rolled Toomer’s Corner” to celebrate important victories.) The museum was hard to find and the exhibits were removed.

A 9,121-seat basketball arena opened across the street from Jordan-Hare Stadium (251 South Donahue Dr.; 334-844-4750) in 2010 with space to house its trophies. Neville Arena (250 Beard-Eaves Ct.; 334-844-9839) is between Donahue Drive and Heisman Drive. It is set back from the street with the entrance facing a cluster of dorms, not the stadium or the street.

Admission to the Neville Arena is free except when there’s a basketball game; then you have to buy a game ticket.

The Lovelace Hall of Honor is not a freestanding museum, but a section between the lobby and the basketball arena’s concession stand. Walk left up a ramp to see a trio of the school’s legendary “Aubie” mascot suits behind glass. Pat Sullivan’s Heisman is encased in a partition near a football from the 1957 season that is painted with the score of the Bama game. Look for an engraved silver cup that was presented to the API (Auburn) team for beating Bama 32-22 during their first game in 1893. A warrior statue was Auburn’s prize for winning the second game, 40-16, later in 1893.

Coming back from a 24-point deficit, Auburn’s 28-27 win over Bama in Tuscaloosa in 2010 set a school record and was pivotal in the run for the BCS crown.

Under coach Gene Chizik, quarterback Cam Newton led the 2010 Tigers to an unexpected perfect 14-0 season, defeating Oregon in the championship game in Arizona and accepting the third Heisman for a Tiger. Coming back from a 24-point deficit, Auburn’s 28-27 win over Bama in Tuscaloosa in 2010 set a school record and was pivotal in the run for the BCS crown. Auburn’s BCS trophy is housed in a circular glass case with the scores printed on the glass. Lots of parents stand their kids in front of the trophy for photos. Streamers overhead list titles or achievements in football and other sports, suggesting that those victories are also worth a celebratory rolling of Toomer’s Corner.

Although there is a shop adjacent to the awards, the largest selection of Auburn merchandise is at J&M Bookstore (115 S. College St.; 334-887-7007) .

Want to stay in the official campus hotel? The Hotel at Auburn University (Corner of Thatch and South College, 241 S. College St.; 334-821-8200) is managed by a founder of the Ritz-Carlton chain and staffed by university hospitality students.

Toomer’s Drugs

Toomer’s Drugs (100 N. College St.; 334-887-3488) has been at the intersection of College and Magnolia streets for more than 130 years. It is the ideal place for a break to enjoy freshly squeezed lemonade. The oaks across the intersection at the main gate to the school have been “rolled” with toilet paper to celebrate athletic victories.

  • Great_Beer_Now 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Alabama Football Past and Present University of Alabama football is a sports institution, and it has been made that way through a long tradition of winning that continues to this day. The man responsible for the school’s stellar reputation for winning is Paul Bryant. His years with the team, and the years of others who have coached the Crimson Tide for more than 130 years are on display at the Paul Bryant Museum. I visited the Paul Bryant Museum while attending parent orientation for incoming freshman. I was fully aware of Bryant and his tremendous success on the field, but I knew only a little bit about the specifics of his time at Alabama and the years before he became head coach at this school. A visit to the Paul Bryant Museum was exactly what I needed to educate myself on University of Alabama football and how it has shaped and influenced college football. This museum, while it is named after Paul Bryant and focuses on Paul Bryant, is really about the Alabama football team’s history as a whole. It steps you through the years of Bama football, starting way back in the 1800’s and continuing to the present day. The exhibits have much to read and learn and there are several noteworthy videos worth watching, to help you not just see but also hear about the people who played and coached at Alabama and helped make it the college football powerhouse that it is today. I learned much from visiting the Paul Bryant Museum, not just about Bryant, but also about other coaches and players. Although I am fully aware of Paul Bryant’s legacy, record number of college wins, etc, I’m not well- versed on Alabama football overall. I did not even know, for example, that NFL quarterback Ken Stabler played at Alabama under coach Bryant. I didn’t know about the event that earned Bryant his nickname, Bear. I learned all these things and more during my visit and I exited the doors with a significant increase in my Alabama football IQ. Alabama football has a fascinating past and the Paul Bryant Museum helps bring the memories back to life. Alabama football fans are certain to feel goosebumps as they tour this museum, but everyone who visits, even those with a marginal interest in the game, will come away feeling satisfied. It isn’t a very large museum and it can be visited in less than an hour. I wish it was bigger, and I would have liked to see even more exhibits, but this is still a good place to visit if you want to improve your knowledge of Alabama football and learn more about the people responsible for its rise to fame. It’s two blocks from the basketball coliseum so a short walk after a game. It has more items than I expected to include bear Bryant’s jacket, championship rings and several tributes to all the greats that have come through the program. Highly recommend taking a 30 minute stroll through here if you are a football fan. Read more Written January 7, 2023

Inside Look at Alabama Football's New Locker Room: "We Feel Like We Have the Best in the Country"

  • Author: Tyler Martin

On Wednesday afternoon, the University of Alabama gave fans an in-depth look at the football's team new locker rooms located at the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

During the three and a half minute-clip, Jeff Springer, Associate Athletics Director for Equipment Operations, provided a breakdown of what is featured in every locker.

"We worked with a great company, Hollman Lockers," Springer said. "Those guys have done an outstanding job taking our vision of what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go with this. We talked to the players and tried to talk to them and ask them, ‘What is important in a locker to you? What do you want out of a locker?’ And one of the things that they said was storage space.”

At every player's locker, there is a hanging rod and hooks to hang suits for travel, a lock box, where they can protect valuables, and ventilated drawers to store extra equipment and cleats. Each locker also has a top ventilated shelf where players can store their shoulder pads.

Cell phone chargers and outlets are located inside the lock box.

A zero-gravity recliner was put into each locker by Human Touch, that allows the players to kick back and relax before or after practice. Each space has a controlled lighting system.

On the inside of each locker, each player has their name, outline of their home state, hometown, jersey number, and position listed.

"We had really lofty goals for this with what we wanted to do and what we wanted out of it,” Springer said. “This turned out better than we could have expected, and we got something that the players really, really love. We feel like we have the best lockers in the country, and it’s going to be like that for years to come.”

Not just football: Alabama puts itself on the 'big stage' with Final Four appearance

university of alabama football tour

LOS ANGELES — Alabama guard Rylan Griffen looked up at an imaginary wall and thought about all of the legendary athletes and teams that have been at Tuscaloosa.

There’s Heisman Trophy winners. Hall of Famers. National champions.

Now he and his teammates will be among those names for being responsible for Alabama achieving its first Final Four in school history .

"We get penciled in history," Griffen said.

It’s a major accomplishment for a program that has long lived in the shadow of its football team and located in a place where sports rule. Not only is football good, but so is softball, gymnastics and golf, with all of the sports making finals and most importantly, winning national championships.

Now this team can add itself to the list, and it has the chance of creating even more history with the first national championship in men's basketball.

"We want to be great in whatever we do. It's the University of Alabama, we should be," athletic director Greg Byrne told USA TODAY Sports. "People care about the University of Alabama like no other, and so it's really cool to see that happen on the basketball court."

It was another outstanding offensive performance from Alabama on Saturday night, but with a twist. The Crimson Tide didn’t come out shooting great. It started 6-for-27 from the field and 1-for-13 from 3-point land. All the makings of a lackluster performance.

But the twist was Alabama was making Clemson work offensively, something not seen much from the Crimson Tide this season. Clemson didn’t shoot the ball well in the first half either, and Alabama’s defense prevented Clemson from ever getting too far ahead. Then the Alabama offense found rhythm. It went on a 22-6 run to end the first half, and from there that’s when the offense did the rest.

Clemson’s offense was much improved in the second half, but it wasn’t nearly as good as Alabama's. The Crimson Tide made 16 of its 23 second half shots. The Tide made 10 3-pointers. Not many teams would be able to keep up with what Alabama was doing, and the Tigers found out the hard way, falling just short of making their first Final Four.

"We can have the No. 1 offense in the country; we had it for the majority of the year," said head coach Nate Oats. "Let's put a top-20 defense together and we can make a Final Four. I think we did that."

AD, players give Nate Oats credit

Byrne has seen his fair share of successful teams since he took the position at Alabama in 2017, and even though the basketball team was in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season, he knew some improvements were needed to make the Final Four. Alabama needed to sharpen up its defense since it was in the bottom of the country in scoring defense. The defense did enough to let its offense flourish in the tournament.

That’s where Byrne gives credit to Oats. And his coaching this postseason is likely what Byrne envisioned when he hired him in 2019. When he offered him the position, Byrne said he told the former Buffalo coach to remember his beginnings when he was coaching basketball and teaching math classes at Romulus High School in Michigan. Remember when he sold "Capri Suns and Cheetos" out of his office during that time so he had money to take his team on trips. If Oats didn’t forget that humility, then Byrne believed he was capable of achieving greatness with the Crimson Tide.

His players made sure to give Oats his due. People thought last year’s team that was the No. 1 overall seed was Alabama’s best chance to make the Final Four, but it was bounced in the Sweet 16. There wasn’t much outside belief Alabama could make it this year, yet here they are.

"He's just a great coach all around. He lost a lot from last year," said guard Mark Sears, who was named the West Regional Most Outstanding Player. "Just for him to rebuild a group, like he got us. It just goes to show how hardworking he is and how much of a competitor he is as well."

Achieving basketball success at a football school

When Oats took the job at Alabama, he couldn’t deny football lived in the spotlight , and other sports were also winning titles. So he made it his mission to get the basketball team to the same level. Even going into this season, the basketball team was having winning seasons, but it hadn’t achieved a Final Four, something Oats felt would validate the team.

So Oats used his resources to his advantage. He tried to learn everything he could from seven-time national championship winning coach Nick Saban. Oats would watch football practices, sit on staff meetings, go on his road trips and even shadowed him. Quotes from Saban would consistently be used by Oats. He figured if he could just see how a coach consistently in the national championship picture operates, it would benefit his team.

"I came to Alabama loving the fact that I was going to be able to work in the same athletic department as arguably the best – maybe not even the best football coach – the best coach of any team sports in modern history, or college sports, anything," Oats said. "I didn't want to bother him. But I certainly picked his brain when it was appropriate."

Saban has communicated with Oats during the NCAA Tournament run, encouraging him to get ready for the next challenge, which Alabama has been able to do so far. It’s learning from the football team’s success that makes it perfectly fine that Alabama is primarily a football school, regardless of how this postseason ends.

"I love the fact that we're a football school, and we're going to try to add another sport to the championship school level because I think we're knocking on the door there," Oats said. "Only 18 national championships behind them. We have a few to catch up. Let's just keep grinding. Let's get to a Final Four first, and let's put ourselves on a big stage."

So sure, Alabama hasn’t won a basketball championship yet. But achieving a Final Four spot, that’s something that could certainly launch another era of success in Tuscaloosa. This time, maybe it won’t just be football shining in the spotlight.

"We're never quite been able to get over this hurdle," Byrne said. "I certainly think this could be a springboard to a lot of other great things ahead."

What alabama football fans should watch for in a-day game, share this article.

university of alabama football tour

We are now just a few days out from being able to see the Kalen DeBoer era of  Alabama Crimson Tide football  on full display as the annual A-Day Game will take place inside Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Not only will the new season usher in a new head football coach, but like most years new players will have to step up and take charge of certain positions.

There will be plenty of critical position groups for fans to keep a watchful eye on this Saturday but Roll Tide Wire has laid out a handful that we believe are the most important.

The QB pecking order

university of alabama football tour

Alabama quarterbacks Ty Simpson (15), Dylan Lonergan (12), Cade Carruth (16), Jalen MIlroe (4) and Austin Mack (10)-Tuscaloosa News

Jalen Milroe has been QB1 for the entirety of the spring but redshirt sophomore Ty Simpson is nipping on his heels by all accounts. It will be interesting to see if both Jalen and Ty receive reps with the first-team offense on Saturday or if they separate the two. One other thing to watch with the quarterbacks is who gets the most work as the third-team guy, Austin Mack or Dylan Lonergan.

The offensive tackles

university of alabama football tour

Elijah Pritchett-John David Mercer

Offensive tackle is one of the biggest question marks entering the A-Day Game. It appears Elijah Pritchett and Wilkin Formby will trot out with the first team with Miles McVay and Naquil Betrand taking reps with the twos. The Alabama pass rush has generated a lot of talk this spring. Let’s see how well the tackles hold up on A-Day.

How Coach DeBoer uses the tight ends

university of alabama football tour

Alabama tight end CJ Dippre-Tuscaloosa News

Alabama was in a lot of 12-personnel in 2023 (two tight ends) but Coach DeBoer has a slightly different philosophy and I believe you will see a little more 11-personnel (one tight end) on A-Day. Reports indicated that Washington transfer Josh Cuevas has had an impressive spring, so it will be interesting to see how CJ Dippre and Robbie Ouzts fit in.

Depth in the defensive front seven

university of alabama football tour

Linebacker Quandarrius Robinson-Tuscaloosa News

I don’t think Alabama fans quite understand the amount of quality depth the Tide has returning in the defensive front seven. Just along the defensive line Alabama has experienced players such as Tim Keenan, Tim Smith, Damon Dayne, James Smith, Jah-Merian Latham, and LT Overton in the mix. Both Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell are back at inside linebacker and Quandarrius Robinson and Keanu Koht will provide great edge rushing. There is a lot of talent along the front seven for the Tide defense.

Youth in the secondary

university of alabama football tour

Red Morgan-Gary Cosby

Like offensive tackle, the secondary has been a question mark for the Crimson Tide this spring. Malachi Moore will be roaming at safety but after that, it is mostly new faces, including true freshmen. Michigan transfer Keon Sabb has likely locked down one safety position and true freshmen Red Morgan and Zabien Brown have had impressive springs. USC transfer Domani Jackson secured the field corner spot. While the talent is there, experience is lacking for the Alabama secondary.

Will fans fill Bryant-Denny Stadium for Kalen DeBoer's first A-Day game?

university of alabama football tour

The University of Alabama is preparing to welcome more than 50,000 fans to Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday for the 2024 A-Day Game in Tuscaloosa.

People can expect sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s this weekend for the spring football game, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham. Admission to the A-Day game is free. Bryant-Denny Stadium's gates will open at noon and kickoff is set for 3 p.m., with ESPN televising.

More: A fans' guide to A-Day: Why you should go to Alabama's spring football game

Nick Frenz, UA associate director of event management, said A-Day is an exciting event for fans who are passionate about Alabama football. He said people from all over the country come to Tuscaloosa for UA athletic events, especially Alabama football.

"Between A-Day and seven regular season games, you get to see 90,000-plus people pour into campus and take in what's great about the university and University of Alabama athletics," Frenz said.

In 2007, Alabama fans filled more than 92,000 seats at Bryant-Denny Stadium for then-coach Nick Saban's first A-Day game. Saban retired in January after 17 seasons at UA.

With new UA football coach Kalen DeBoer's first A-Day game set for this Saturday, UA must prepare as if the stadium will be filled to its now 100,077-seat capacity, Frenz said.

"We're expecting a full house this time... that's the first that we've seen anything like that in several years for an A-Day game," Frenz said.

In 2011, 92,310 fans filled the stadium for the A-Day game when Saban's statue was unveiled at the Walk of Fame. A-Day attendance fluctuated between 50,000 and 70,000 fans during the Saban era.

Last year's A-Day game drew a crowd of around 58,000, so Frenz expects a crowd more in that range for Saturday.

Frenz says there's a sense of excitement about DeBoer as the Crimson Tide's new coach.

"I think fans are curious to see how the offense is gonna be run, how the defense is gonna run and how that's gonna look. That'll give them an idea of what the upcoming season is going to look like," he said.

The A-Day game wraps up spring football practice, with the Crimson Tide set to kick off the 2024 season on Aug. 31 against Western Kentucky University in its home opener.

A-Day fans can expect some of the pageantry of a regular season game, with the Million Dollar Band, high school students and Million Dollar Band alumni performing.

Saban and the 2023 team captains will participate in the Walk of Fame ceremony at 1 p.m. at Denny Chimes and fans can welcome the 2024 when they arrive at 1:30 p.m. at the Walk of Champions.

Food, music and entertainment will be available at Champions Lane adjacent to the Tuska elephant statue.

A-Day game-day operations will run just like a regular season game as far as parking and road closures, Frenz said. UA has a website, uagameday.com , with all that information and more. Fans can also use the website to download the gameday app directly on their smartphones.

Other UA athletic events will also take place during A-Day weekend, including:

  • The men's tennis team against Ole Miss at 4 p.m. Friday and against Texas A&M at 1 p.m. Sunday at the tennis facility.
  • Baseball vs. Texas A&M at 6 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium
  • Softball vs. Texas A&M at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Rhoads Stadium.

Ticket information about these events is available at www.rolltide.com .

Those events and the A-Day game will draw large crowds and likely affect Tuscaloosa traffic, so Frenz advised fans to be patient.

The safety of fans is No. 1 priority, Frenz said, and security measures will operate similarly to regular season games.

Last year, Tuscaloosa police announced enhanced safety measures on the Strip, which include:

  • Beefed-up patrols and a new police substation at 1209 University Blvd.
  • Temporary speed bumps
  • New parking and towing rules. Property owners are no longer required to be present for a vehicle to be towed from their property, according to a measure passed by the Tuscaloosa City Council. This means that vehicles are much more likely to get towed when motorists park in a lot that requires decals or credentials.
  • Stricter enforcement of loitering ordinances.

Frenz said fans are encouraged to be aware of these rules before they come to the UA campus.

But the main goal for A-Day is for fans to have fun and enjoy DeBoer's debut at Bryant-Denny Stadium, he said.

"I think fans are excited because, again, this is something that they haven't experienced since 2007," Frenz said.

Alabama football spring game 2024: Roster, time, how to watch

K alen DeBoer’s first spring game as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide is a big moment for the program. Nick Saban was in charge since 2007, but the legendary coach called it quits at the end of 2023. DeBoer led the Washington Huskies to the National Championship game before losing out to the Michigan Wolverines, but he couldn’t say no to the opportunity to lead the Crimson Tide. Let’s see the storylines, rosters, time, and how to watch for the 2024 Alabama football spring game.

ESPN’s networks are televising plenty of spring games, but the Crimson Tide’s edition will be the only one broadcast on the main ESPN channel. It’s a nerve-wracking time for Kalen DeBoer, as he has big shoes to fill when taking over for Nick Saban. There is no better indication of that than their spring game being the only one broadcasted on ESPN this season.

Alabama’s new system under Kalen DeBoer

The most prominent storyline for DeBoer in his inaugural season is how the team’s game plan will look compared to Saban’s. The early returns in spring practice show that DeBoer and his offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan will get their running backs involved in the passing game.

“We’ve run a lot more routes, installed a lot more routes now,” sophomore running back Justice Haynes said. “Which is really good, you get to showcase your talent in all aspects of the game and be a complete back, which I love.”

Haynes is the most experienced returning running back on the roster. Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams left for the NFL and the transfer portal. Haynes showed his potential in Alabama’s Rose Bowl loss, averaging eight yards per carry on four carries.

DeBoer led the Washington Huskies to a top-15 ranking in college football in yards and points per game. They also ranked first in passing yards per game. Jalen Milroe had glimpses of greatness last season, but not enough to lead the Crimson Tide to a National Championship. DeBoer’s system emphasizes quarterback and outside weapons, so Milroe will need to step up his game for DeBoer to have success.

Washington transfers leading the way

Alabama’s new system will take some getting used to after 17 years of Nick Saban. However, it has been made easier by the transfers who came over with DeBoer from Washington. Germie Bernard, Austin Mack, and Parker Brailsford are all members of DeBoer’s National Championship runner-up who are now showing the Crimson Tide how to adapt to DeBoer’s system.

“You know what, there’s some small little nuances that come up from time to time, that every once in a while even as a coach you kind of breeze over,” Alabama wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard said. “You’ve just got guys who’ve been in a groove for two years that know and understand all the details. To have guys like Germie [Bernard] and Austin [Mack] in the building, and they pull guys to the side, letting them know, ‘hey this is the expectation.'”

Alabama spring game roster

Quarterback Ty Simpson and receivers Kobe Prentice, Emmanuel Henderson, and Caleb Odom are the ones to watch in the spring game. Simpson could challenge Milroe at some point this season, and Caleb Odom is the type of receiver that DeBoer values. Odom is a 6-foot-5 freshman who may remind people of Washington standout Rome Odunze. Milroe has been getting most of the first-team reps, but a good spring game from Simpson could get him in the mix.

Redshirt freshman Wilkin Formby is also turning heads at right tackle. The 6-foot-7, 320-pounder is another perfect fit for DeBoer’s system. Many position battles are taking place on the offensive line.

Wide receiver Jalen Hale went down with a significant knee injury during practices. The team is hopeful that he will return at some point next season.

Washington RB Tybo Rogers arrested on rape charges, suspended from Huskies program

Rogers played in the cfp after the uw title ix office was reportedly informed of an alleged rape.

NCAA Football: CFP National Championship-Washington Practice

Washington running back Tybo Rogers was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of rape, according to King County court documents. He was released the same day after posting a bond of $150,000. The investigation remains open.

Washington suspended Rogers indefinitely following the arrest. The charges allege two separate incidents of assault, one of which was directly reported to the Washington Title IX office and led to a temporary suspension in December,  ESPN  reports. Both coach Kalen DeBoer and athletic director Troy Dannen have left the program since the incident.

"The University of Washington Intercollegiate Athletics Department is aware of the arrest of a football student-athlete by the Seattle Police Department," Washington said in a statement. "The student-athlete has been suspended from all team activities until further notice. The UW will continue to gather facts and cooperate with law enforcement, as requested."

ESPN reports the first assault is alleged to have occurred in October 2023 and involved a student at Seattle Central Community College. Weeks later, a University of Washington student reported an assault to the university's Title IX department on Nov. 28.

According to documents obtained by ESPN, Rogers was suspended in late November. He he did not appear on the travel roster for the Pac-12 Championship Game. However, Rogers was active for Washington's run in the College Football Playoff. The university did not confirm the suspension was due to the alleged assaults.

The alleged suspension would have occurred under DeBoer, who left the program in January to take over for Nick Saban at Alabama . In a written statement, DeBoer said he couldn't comment on specifics due to federal privacy laws, but asserted that Rogers' case was handled in accordance with "institutional policies".

"While I am not able to comment specifically on the situation involving an individual at my former institution because of federal privacy laws and the ongoing criminal matters, I do want to make it clear that I take any allegation of sexual misconduct very seriously," his statement read. "I always have and always will follow established institutional policies and procedures to ensure prompt reporting and proper handling of allegations by the appropriate authorities."

New Washington coach Jedd Fisch said his staff was unaware of the allegation until the arrest.

"As soon as we found out about any allegation, we suspended him immediately from the program," Fisch told reporters.

Rogers played in 11 games as a freshman out of Bakersfield, California . He rushed for 184 yards on 44 carries for the Huskies, and received six carries in the College Football Playoff after his suspension.

Bryant-denny stadium.

Bryant-Denny Stadium

* Does not include 15 wins vacated by NCAA ruling. Records current as of 2019 season.

Bryant-Denny Stadium is not only one of the most iconic facilities on The University of Alabama campus, but it is also often one of the most visited destinations in the state. The current seating capacity of 100,077 makes Bryant-Denny Stadium one of the nation's largest on-campus football stadiums.

Stadium History

  • The venue went through a $107 million renovation that included updating and expanding multiple seating areas with three new club areas and the addition of 3,826 new premium seats, loge boxes, the Terrace Club, the Champions Club and Founders Suites on the west side, new skyboxes on the east U1 level, as well as renovation of existing skyboxes.
  • Improvements were made to all team areas including the locker room and tunnel, and the recruiting room was expanded to nearly double in size. A student plaza was added on the south side as well as larger videoboards in the four corners, and the press box was relocated to the east side.
  • The 2010 renovation pushed capacity to 101,821, with an additional 36 skyboxes, to bring the total to 159, and 1,700 club seats.
  • Other additions included a club level area and traditional upper-deck seating. Office space was included, as well as a home team locker room located in the north end zone.
  • In 2006, three levels of premium seating and 38 luxury skyboxes were added in addition to a pair of large video scoreboards in the north end zone, and state-of-the-art, wrap-around display boards situated on the facades of the east and west upper decks.
  • The 1998 east side expansion added 10,000 bleacher seats and two spiral walkways to give the stadium a more symmetrical appearance.
  • A total of 81 skyboxes, on two levels, also were added. The skyboxes were built in two sizes, 24-seat capacity (18) and 16-seat capacity (64).

Other Updates and Facts

  • The latest renovation marked the fifth since 1988 and the eighth time overall Bryant-Denny Stadium has had significant upgrades since it was originally constructed in 1929. Other renovations and expansions were completed in 1946, 1961, 1966, 1988, 1998, 2006 and 2010.
  • One of the unique aspects of Bryant-Denny Stadium is a plaza connecting the stadium with University Boulevard. The plaza, which quickly became a focal point on game day Saturdays, honors Alabama’s national championship coaches and commemorates the Tide’s 18 national and 28 SEC titles.
  • Another unique aspect of Bryant-Denny Stadium, while not part of a renovation or expansion, was the installation of a state-of-the-art LED light system in 2019. The lights feature instant on/off capabilities, are fully dimmable and are connected to a system that allows them to function in different colors, scenes and effects.
  • An updated sound system was installed prior to the 2021 season, adding to the game-day experience for the teams and fans.
  • In 1999, four additional skyboxes were added and a scoreboard with video replay capabilities was installed in the south end.
  • Other additions to Bryant-Denny Stadium include two east side reception areas for Scholarship and A-Club level patrons. These areas are located above the center entrance on the east side and include rooms large enough to host receptions and pre-game meal functions.
  • The Crimson Tide owns an impressive 277-54-3 (.829) all-time record at Bryant- Denny Stadium and a 363-67-3 (.838) mark in all games played in Tuscaloosa.
  • Dating back to the 1988 renovation of Bryant-Denny Stadium, more than 18.5 million fans have witnessed the Crimson Tide play in 225 home games over the past 33 seasons.

Birmingham Stallions’ home opener: ‘More than just a football game’

After opening the 2024 United Football League season with two road wins, the Birmingham Stallions will kick off their home schedule against the Memphis Showboats at 6 p.m. CDT Saturday at Protective Stadium.

Stallions coach Skip Holtz hopes the game will mean as much for area football fans as it does to him.

St. Louis set the standard for spring-football support on Saturday as 40,317 saw former Alabama All-American AJ McCarron rally the Battlehawks to a 27-24 victory over the Arlington Renegades in the Dome at America’s Center. But the UFL’s three other Week 2 games in Memphis, Detroit and Washington did not meet St. Louis’ attendance figure combined.

Holtz thinks Birmingham can become the model for spring-football success in the new league after the Stallions won the past two USFL championships. The United Football League is in its first season after the USFL and XFL merged.

“My dream and goal is to watch when Birmingham has 40,000 people because (St. Louis is) now setting the standard in the way that community is supporting that spring-football league,” Holtz said. “And I think when you look at it, the product is better, the players are better, I think the results are better. I think every game, when you look at them, they’re 27-24 or they’re 20-13, they’re 20-19, they’re 18-13, they’re all close football games. I think it’s a great product, it’s a great league and I think continually you’re going to see the support continue to grow in every market, not just in St. Louis, but I think you’re going to see every market continue to grow.

“And I think as big as football is in the state of Alabama and as much as they support football, I think Alabama has an opportunity to be the showcase program for spring football, not only with what we’ve been able to do on the football field with two championships, but the support that we have in that state, I don’t think there’s any reason we can’t be the premier spring-football program in the country, not only on the field, but off the field as well. I’m very appreciative for the fan support that we have, but I think the more that show up, the more fun it’s going to be, the more entertaining it’s going to be, and I think it’s going to be great.”

The home opener provides Birmingham with an opportunity to celebrate its second USFL championship, captured with a 28-12 victory over the Pittsburgh Maulers on July 1 in Canton, Ohio.

From 5 to 6 p.m. Friday at Ghost Train Brewing, the Stallions will hold a pre-game party and championship-ring celebration. Holtz and some of the Birmingham players will be on hand for autographs, photographs and giveaways, and Holtz will present the players and coaches from the 2023 team with their championship rings.

On Saturday, gates at Protective Stadium will open at 4:30 p.m. for Champions Night. Stanley Stable Fan Fest in the north end-zone plaza will feature interactive games and other children’s activities, parents can sign up kids in Section 106 for the pre-game high-five tunnel and quarterback Alex McGough will be back to help unveil the 2023 championship banner.

Now with the Green Bay Packers, McGough threw four touchdown passes in last season’s championship game.

Tickets for Saturday’s game are available online , and Stallions have $10 seats in Sections 110 and 142.

When the USFL revived in 2022, Birmingham served as the home for all eight teams, and every regular-season game was played in the Magic City. Last season, the USFL spread its teams to four sites, with Birmingham keeping the Stallions and the New Orleans Breakers.

This season, the UFL has followed the XFL model. All teams train in the Arlington, Texas, area, but each plays a true home-and-away schedule representing its namesake city or state.

“What we’re most excited about this week is having the opportunity to come home,” Holtz said. “Like Dorothy said, there’s no place like home. Not only have I missed playing in Birmingham and having the opportunity to play in Protective Stadium, but I have missed the opportunity to live in Birmingham as we have had the opportunity for the last two years. I’ve really kind of taken to the city, to the hospitality, to the restaurants, to some of the different places. It’s just been a great experience for me and for our football team for the last two years, so it’s been frustrating to be away. But we’re really excited about having the opportunity to come home this weekend.

“It’s going to be a great venue. Ought to be a great opportunity. It’s going to be a beautiful day, and certainly, I’m excited to see the turnout with this weekend being such a big weekend. Not only are we coming back to Birmingham, but having the ring ceremony on Friday night, where I know our players are really excited about that opportunity. They worked really hard a year ago for that championship, and now to be able to see them be rewarded for some of the fruits of their labor, to see that ring, it’s going to be a special night for a lot of players on our team.

“But also it’s going to be neat because we’re going to have the opportunity to bring that second championship banner to Protective Stadium, which I know is going to have the opportunity to drop before the game on Saturday. I know Alex McGough is coming in and will be involved in all that. Like I said, it’s got a chance to be a really big weekend. It’s going to be an event more than just a football game, and really looking forward to having the opportunity to come back and be a part of all that.”

Holtz said fans will see better football on Saturday night than the USFL fielded. When the spring-football leagues merged, four teams from each circuit survived while eight teams disbanded.

“When I look at the talent level of the offensive and defensive lines, and I think that is probably the biggest difference in where this league has been,” Holtz said. “There’s a lot of depth. I’m looking at some of our linebackers that were starters for other teams. Some of these defensive linemen that have been brought in – I think we have 30 players on our roster that have NFL experience, so I think that this league is becoming more and more of a viable option. I think players are starting to turn down futures (contract) opportunities in the NFL to bet on themselves to go showcase their talents and abilities.

“I think it’s a real testament to the job that everybody has done in building this new UFL. And so, I think the product is much better than it’s been. On the O-lines, the D-lines, the talent level across the board, I think, is better. I would love to see a couple more teams added, but I think as this thing continues to grow, I think it’s got a chance to really be big.”

Birmingham started its season by beating the Renegades 27-14 on March 30, then topped the Michigan Panthers 20-13 on Sunday.

Memphis downed the Houston Roughnecks 18-12 on March 31, then lost to San Antonio 20-19 on Saturday when the Brahmas scored two touchdowns in the final 48 seconds .

FOX will televise the Showboats-Stallions game.
