Silverdocs: How Journey Found A New Lead Singer And Made Friends In Manila

journey manila

Arnel Pineda became the lead singer of Journey in late 2007. Silverdocs hide caption

Arnel Pineda became the lead singer of Journey in late 2007.

One of the oddest things about the story of Arnel Pineda is that it's not actually quite as odd as it might seem.

Pineda was a bar and club singer working in Manila in 2007, doing some original material but finding an audience mostly for his covers, when he got an e-mail from Neal Schon, the guitarist from Journey. Schon had seen videos of Pineda performing on YouTube and asked him to come to San Francisco and audition to become the band's new lead singer. From Journey fan to Journey member, because of YouTube.

That's the hook of Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey , which opened Silverdocs on Monday night. Director Ramona S. Diaz followed Pineda and the band from the time shortly after he started rehearsing with them through their very successful 2008 tour and their – the word is a cliché, but it applies – triumphant show in Manila in March 2009 when they brought him back home a hero, the successful lead singer of an iconic American band.

There is a certain fairytale quality to all of it – the guy who was singing Journey covers when he suddenly got The Call – but really, it's not that weird. Schon didn't stumble on him accidentally or get an e-mail from someone that said "You've got to see this guy!!!"; he found Pineda while specifically searching YouTube for lead singers, because it's a not-unusual way to find musicians. Maybe he was even looking for lead singers doing Journey songs. Maybe even for lead singers doing Journey songs who sounded a lot like former lead singer Steve Perry – which Pineda surely does. Other than the fact that he was in the Philippines, Schon found his guy the way he set out to find him.

Pineda isn't quite as young as he sometimes seems in the film; he can seem like a kid, but he turned 41 during the 2008 tour. He's a stretch younger than guys like Schon, who's pushing 60, but he's not Justin Bieber being plucked from YouTube because he's never done anything. The story threatens at times to become a wacky internet novelty, but at its best, it's something a bit more satisfying than that. At its best, it's about a working singer – not a YouTube fluke, but a working, day-in-day-out singer who's been playing for years and years – can suddenly find himself jumped to the head of the line, playing to 22,000 people with musicians he's admired all his life. It doesn't have a lot to do with YouTube; the better story is about a band taking a huge risk on a completely unknown quantity because they need a guy and they found one they think will be a fit.

(As a side note, as tempting as the "Don't Stop Believin'" title is, I would have gone with a variation on "Journeyman." Just a suggestion, pun-wise.)

The best parts of the film focus on Pineda; he has a playful attitude toward his own sometimes overwhelming anxiety about the situation into which he's been thrust. He turns out to be a terrific fit for the band, despite his own comment that partly because he's "so Asian," he looks like they Photoshopped him in when Journey has photos taken. In fact, one of the guys in the band comments that bringing something a little more "international" to the "all-American" group is probably an advantage – a prediction that proves true when Pineda helps the band develop an impassioned following of Filipino-American fans in addition to the people back home in Manila. (The security team notes at one point that for some of Arnel's fans, he's "like Elvis.")

But at almost two hours, the film feels long. It comes to what seems like a natural ending at one point, and then it goes on for probably another 20 minutes. There are some background segments on the general history of Journey that don't seem to have been made with the love that went into the Pineda-era stuff, and a persistent subplot about Pineda getting colds and drinking tean — while care of the voice makes a nice tour detail — keeps coming back and back and back but never really goes anywhere.

Then there is also the problem of "Don't Stop Believin'" itself. I don't think it's a spoiler – I really, truly cannot imagine how it could be – to tell you that the film builds to the performance of that particular song. This tour happened after The Sopranos put "Don't Stop Believin'" in the spotlight but before Glee put it there again, and the closing titles of the film point out that it's now the most downloaded song written in the 20 th century. But at some point, waiting for it becomes a bit of a tease, and the build to the performance (and the holding out on playing much of that song after playing most of Journey's others that are well-known, sometimes more than once) turns into a game. I would have dropped the bomb a little sooner, just to avoid the sense of inevitability.

But the film is fun, and it's worth seeing, not because it's the tale of an internet sensation, but because it's the tale of a bunch of guys who really, really want to hear crowds scream – either again or for the first time ever. As much as it's about how a band lifted an unknown singer into a dreamlike world of screaming crowds and far more money than he'd ever known, it's also about how a band found just the right guy at just the right time to help capitalize on the surprise comeback of one of the band's most famous songs. Pineda says at one point that it's like hitting the lotto, what happened to him, but in truth, Schon hit the lotto, too. You can see the guys standing around him at certain moments, looking at him or watching him perform, realizing that he's incredibly grateful to them, but in fact, without him, they are out of luck .

There's an argument to be made that when you set out to find your new lead singer looking specifically for someone who can sing your existing hits and make them sound just like they did when your old lead singer sang them – rather than being primarily focused on a guy who can contribute to whatever your next identity is – you run the risk of essentially covering your own music. Under this theory, Pineda was originally recruited to be the lead singer of the most famous Journey cover band in the world – the one called Journey. But they have since released two albums of new material, and it seems to be a little more than that. It may even be a little more than Schon expected to find on YouTube.

JOURNEY's JONATHAN CAIN: 'We're Very Happy With ARNEL PINEDA'

In a new interview with Steve King of the 105.3 The Bone radio station, JOURNEY keyboardist Jonathan Cain spoke about the band's current working relationship with its longtime vocalist Arnel Pineda . Pineda was a bar and club singer working in Manila, Philippines in 2007 when he got an e-mail from JOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon who had seen videos of Pineda performing on YouTube and asked him to come to San Francisco and audition to become the band's new frontman.

"Yeah, Arnel 's 16 years celebrating — this is his 16th year [with JOURNEY ]," Cain said. "[It's] probably the longest tenure of any lead singer for the band. So, he's been crushing it for us. He's got his kids on the road with him this time, and he seems really content and happy. And we're really proud of everything he's done up to this point. And we see some years left. There's definitely still some gas in the tank. But we're very happy with Arnel . He's amazing."

Classic JOURNEY singer Steve Perry left the band in 1998 and was replaced by Steve Augeri . Jeff Scott Soto replaced Augeri in JOURNEY in December 2006 after Augeri began suffering throat problems on the road. But Soto lasted less than a year, and in December 2007, JOURNEY hired Pineda , who fronts the band to this day.

Back in August 2022, Schon was asked what it had been like to work with Pineda for the prior 15 years. He responded: " Arnel is just a gem. He's more amazing right now than he was when I first found him in Manila 15 years ago, when he was homeless and he was in dire straits. I was searching for the new singer for JOURNEY and I chose YouTube to look all over the world for the singer. When I heard his voice, I knew that he was it — with no other thought. It hit me emotionally in my heart. I went, 'That is the voice. He is the voice. I know he can do it.' And so I stuck to my guns, with a lot of resistance from many — from within the band and from management. They all thought I was crazy. I said, 'I know I'm right. So get him over here.' We got him over. And he proved that I was right again."

Neal continued: "The show we just played the other night, he sounded phenomenal through the whole show. We finally got his in-ears sorted out; we've got a great mixer in front now. It sounds like a record every night. And he's sounding phenomenal every night. And he's very excited about some of the new direction that we took that allows him to show how creative he can be without having to emulate our other albums, which is a requirement for any singer that would come into JOURNEY . It's either that or you throw away all your hits that you ever had. And what do you do? Start from ground zero again? It doesn't make sense.

"So I knew when I found Arnel that I had found a true chameleon like no other singer I've ever heard. He is amazing. I love him. He's a true warrior."

Born in the Philippines, Pineda has been fronting the legendary rockers since 2007. A vocal doppelganger for JOURNEY 's longtime vocalist Steve Perry , Arnel has helped put JOURNEY back in arenas once again. But some fans were not happy about the addition of Pineda , complaining about his ethnicity and dismissing his voice as a "copycat" of Perry .

Pineda and Perry finally crossed paths when JOURNEY and its former singer shared the stage at their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April 2017. While accepting the award, Steve spoke warmly about his former bandmates, as well as the man who replaced him. "I must give a shout-out to a man who sings his heart out every night, Arnel Pineda ," Perry said.

Although Pineda did not get inducted with his bandmates, he did get up and join them at the Hall Of Fame induction ceremony, singing "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Lights" .

Six years ago, Perry told SiriusXM that he didn't perform with JOURNEY at the Rock Hall ceremony because he is "not in the band. I haven't been in the band for quite some time," he explained. " Arnel 's been in the band for almost 10 years, I think. He's a sweet kid — he's a wonderful kid. He sings his heart out every night. It's his gig."

As for meeting Pineda before the induction, Perry said: "There was something endearing about the way he looked at me. He was meeting, like, a grandfather. [ Laughs ] He's got the gig. It's his gig. He's doing great."

Pineda has overcome a tremendous number of obstacles throughout his life, including the loss of his mother at a young age, homelessness and borderline starvation, making him an inspiration and providing hope for millions of people around the globe. Blessed with the ability to give back, Pineda mobilized his team to join the battle against poverty and its ensuing havoc on Philippine youth.

Americana rock legends Journey, certainly found the right formula when they returned to the limelight after being on hiatus for a while. This was, of course, the revelation that was Arnel Pineda, after Neal Schon was scouting Youtube he came across Arnel’s material and soon thereafter the Philipino singer was in San Francisco auditioning for the gig, which we later found on via “Revelation” Journey ‘s 14th studio album and first with Arnel.

Hard to believe this was eight years ago, the band has 2 albums total with Pineda and has toured the world relentlessly many times over. What I find even more fascinating talking to hardcore Journey fans, is how some still to this day feel like the band needs the iconic and acclaimed singer Steve Perry, former Journey front man back in the band. But that’s a discussion for a different article.

Keep in mind that even with a new singer, someone who was a complete unknown, Journey has managed to release two solid records, still sell out concerts and yes even though Arnel is singing some of these quintessential songs that Steve and the other Journey members made famous, he does the songs justice and if you let your bias towards a legend skewed their music now, you will be missing great music that is still enduring and lives up to any of their classic material.

This particular Blu-Ray package is a not a new concert, rather this was originally released in 2009 on DVD, now it has been re-issued with never before heard 2 CD audio of this momentous occasion where the band performed live in Manila, Philippines, in Arnel’s home country to a sea of rabid Journey fans.

Filmed with 4K cameras and utilizing Red technology, the image here is truly crisp and eye-popping. Not only do you get over 2 hours of Journey classics, but you also get a chance to hear and see Arnel in top notch form as he made his homecoming a truly memorable experience for the band and their fans.

Classics such as “Ask the Lonely” and “Stone in love” are achieved admirably, and the core of the lineup sounds completely flawless. Neal Schon is just a guitar god, one of the most underrated guitar players in Rock, his tone is very refined and clear, something you expect from performing these timeless classics. But perhaps two of the most underrated band members, main songwriter Jonathan Cain and drummer Deen Castronovo are both brilliant. Deen has a truly underrated voice and a couple of the songs he does on vocals such as “Mother, Father” and “Still They Ride” he sounds scintillating. I want to wish Deen best of luck after his troubles with substance abuse and of course we all know now, he was let go from Journey, a very hard choice to make for the band.

His replacement has been another great drummer Steve Smith, former Journey himself who agreed to play their live dates, no confirmation yet if he will stick around for any new material the band may do. Rumor has it they are taking a long break after their completion from touring this year.

More classics tunes keep this greatest hits performance running with “Open Arms” where Arnel provides the best Steve Perry impersonation that I think anyone could pull off, another personal favorite “Wheel in the Sky” sounds and feels great, is just Journey with or without the nostalgic of their favorite front man according to most fans. The band plays some material from “Revelation” such as Where Did I loose Your Love” which reminds us that they still have it after all these years, the new songs get a nice reaction from the fan base, even though we know they are there to witness the timeless songs of their long career.

To be honest, this is a great package, Journey performs a long catalog of amazing songs, this moment in time was filmed just right and with a new front man they had a lot to prove to the fans, and they have shown they can live up to the hype. Is not easy replacing a legendary singer, and yes I know some fans don’t care if Arnel can sing or not, they will only compare him to Perry, which I can understand, but you have to move past that and give the guy credit for doing these songs justice and he does not only in this performance, but they have proved this with their last two albums with Pineda, and with their live performances.

The great total package, you get your bang for your buck. The Blu-Ray package is very well done and finally gives the performance more aesthetic nuisances. I would compare this to Journey: Live in Houston – The Escape Tour (1981), which of course features Perry on vocals in terms of performance alone.

An Oddly-Named Town In Tasmania Is The Setting For the Most Heartbreaking Netflix Film of the Year

Filipino Movie 'A Journey' Filming Locations Explained

Heartfelt character study A Journey follows three childhood friends on a voyage of self-discovery through Tasmania, where the production was filmed on location.

Essentially a road movie, the film explores some deep themes and goes all out to ensure you are emotionally exhausted by the time the credits roll. But of course, what’s a good road movie without picturesque locations?

Where was A Journey filmed?

Manila, philippines.

Filipino Movie 'A Journey' Filming Locations Explained

Manila, Philippines | Image via Audley Travel

The Filipino movie was always going to use authentic locations for the production, and much of it was shot in and around Manila. There are establishing shots of the busy motorways and the homes of our leads, before the trio of friends hit the road on their trip, with the journey leading to Tasmania in Australia.

Our cast hit the road in their RV and we see them on the road stopping in various locations before they get to their spiritual destination, the oddly named town of Penguin.

Penguin, Tasmania, Australia

Instagram posts from star Patrick Garcia also shared some of the locations in Tasmania, including some from the town of Penguin, located on the North coast of Tasmania.

Extensive shooting took place in the small, beautiful community, which has a population of around 4100 people. Penguin launched an app in 2020 that allows visitors to peruse the local attractions.

Oddly, in one scene, you can see the town appears to have its very own Tardis from Doctor Who. The iconic blue police box is next to a sign that says Beach Access, but sports a heading that says “Penguin Library”, suggesting it may be full of books and not time travelers. It is spotted again in a nighttime scene too.

We see a motel called The Beachway, which is located in Ulverstone, Tasmania, and scenes were recorded at the Penguin Uniting Church that overlooks the beach and Bass Strait. Penguin Caravan Park is also used, as is Lane’s Supermarket, and the Penguin Country Bakehouse, Penguin Food Bar, and the Penguin Visitor Information Centre are also credited.

Who produced and directed A Journey?

A Journey was directed by RC Delos Reyes, and he has had a busy couple of years. In 2023, IMDb has him down as directing four features:  Swing, Unravel: A Swiss Side Love Story, Without You and I Love Lizzy. He has also written for television and has worked as a creative head on various other productions.

Reyes uses every trick in the book to ensure there is not a dry eye in the house by the end of this movie.

A Journey  was produced by Mavx Production Inc.

Who is the surprise cameo in A Journey?

Filipino Movie 'A Journey' Filming Locations Explained

Ogie Alcasid | Image via Newport World Resorts

In the third act of the heartbreaking film, a singer appears to sing a song for Shane. Bryan had arranged for the singer and TV personality Ogie Alcasid to sing to Shane, and the personality was cast in the film, no doubt delighting fans.

Ogie has had a long career, releasing his first album in 1989, and making his feature film debut in 1990’s Feel Na Feel . He went on to further TV work, including becoming a game show host and a judge on a TV talent show.

His career, spanning decades, encompasses nearly every aspect of film, music, and TV, and his appearance in  A Journey would probably have meant a lot more to viewers who knew of his work than it did to me. I was just confused, but in the narrative of the film, it makes sense.

Netflix’s A Journey: Where Was the Filipino Movie Filmed?

Naman Shrestha of Netflix’s A Journey: Where Was the Filipino Movie Filmed?

With RC Delos Reyes at the helm, Netflix’s ‘A Journey’ is a Filipino drama movie that revolves around three childhood and lifelong friends, out of which Kaye Abad’s character receives the news that her cancer has made its way back into her life. Instead of undergoing the necessary treatment for the illness, she insists that she wants to check off some things on her bucket list with her husband and best friend, which includes going on a road trip across Tasmania.

As the trio of friends embark on the adventurous journey, they find out some harsh truths about one another. The narrative is brought to life through the brilliant performances of talented Filipino actors, including Paolo Contis, Patrick Garcia, Kaye Abad, and Jimmy Santos. Exploring the themes of friendship, love, and loss, the film also pays attention to the visual side of things as there are many beautiful spots in the backdrop that keep the viewers intrigued and glued to the screen.

A Journey Shooting Locations

‘A Journey’ was shot in the Philippines and Australia, with the cast and crew specifically setting up camp in Manila, Tasmania, and Melbourne. Beginning in May 2023, the principal photography for the drama film continued for about three months, before seemingly wrapping up in August of the same year.

Manila, Philippines

For the first leg of the production, the filming unit of ‘A Journey’ utilized the locales of the capital of the Philippines — Manila AKA the City of Manila, which lies on the eastern shore of Manila Bay on the island of Luzon. Several important scenes, especially the exteriors, were recorded in and around the city’s vast skyline.

Tasmania, Australia

Next, the production team of ‘A Journey’ traveled to the Australian island state of Tasmania, where they recorded multiple pivotal sequences, involving the three lead characters. The cast and crew members of the drama movie were spotted taping a few key portions in and around the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park situated in the Central Highlands area of the island. Consisting of many walking trails, the national park is where hikes for the popular Overland Track begin.

Located between Burnie and Ulverstone, there is a town called Penguin that served as yet another filming site on the island of Tasmania. From the looks of it, the filming unit spent a significant amount of time in and around the small town while lensing crucial scenes. Overall, they took many aerial and other outdoor shots while the trio of friends traversed through the Tasmanian terrains in their vehicle.

Melbourne, Australia

Reports suggest that the director of ‘A Journey’ and the rest of his team set up camp in and around Melbourne, the capital of the Australian state of Victoria. Using the modern architecture and vast landscape of the city as the backdrop, the production team recorded various prominent scenes for the film.

'A Journey' Review: Netflix's Filipino film leaves you teary-eyed with profound emotions

MANILA, PHILIPPINES: 'A Journey', now streaming on Netflix , takes viewers on a poignant two-hour exploration of profound emotions.

It revolves around a young woman, Shane, whose cancer returns for the second time and she chooses to opt out of undergoing chemotherapy again.

Instead, she convinces her husband, Bryan, to help her check off the adventures on her bucket list. Accompanied by their close friend, Kristoff, the trio sets off on an unforgettable adventure to Tasmania.

Netflix's 'A Journey' is an emotional one

A still from 'A Journey' (@netflix)

The film delivers a deeply emotional experience, evoking tears as it portrays Shane and Bryan's heartfelt journey through the diagnosis of the deadly disease.

Despite the expected emotional moments, the film also celebrates love and enduring friendships.

It's central philosophy- "survival is not the same as living" is beautiful portrayed, emphasizing the idea that one never knows what may happen tomorrow.

There have been plenty of films made in the past with similar themes, but the portrayal of deep, sentimental human emotions can never become worn out in cinema. In fact, they are the heart of cinema, depicted across all genres.

'A Journey' doesn't bore you with monotony

Paolo Contis, Patrick Garcia and Kaye Abad in 'A Journey' (@netflix)

The plot of the film is quite familiar and has been depicted in several films across continents.

Fortunately, RC Delos Reyes does a brilliant job of not lingering on emotional moments but maintains a steady pace, ensuring the audience remains engaged and invested in the story.

The close, fun relationship shared between the trio provides a heartfelt relief from the heavily loaded emotions of pain and grief.

Paolo Contis, Patrick Garcia and Kaye Abad share a wholesome chemistry and are quite convincing in their respective parts.

'A Journey' makes a worthwhile watch for a relaxed weekend, alone or with loved ones. Just be prepared with tissues handy for this touching ride.

Developing the fringes of Metro Manila

  • Mark Villar
  • April 17, 2024
  • 3 minute read

mark villar01

The heavy traffic in Metro Manila again caught the eye of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last week. This time around, President Marcos offered long-term solutions that could ease the traffic jams and lead to a broader and more inclusive economic development of the nation.

I am referring to the policy statement of the chief executive to pursue the development of nearby provinces and cities as a timely solution to Metro Manila’s worsening traffic woes.

“Traffic is one of our biggest problems in this country. Sadly, it’s been a part of every Filipino’s life, and the traffic in the Philippines is notorious all over the world,” Mr. Marcos said in his recent vlog. “Metro Manila is congested. So part of the plan is to develop the neighboring provinces and cities.”

I consider this a Solomonic decision on the part of President Marcos. Mega infrastructure projects are coming on stream—maybe in four to six years—to alleviate traffic in the urban capital region. But the respective capacities of the 147-kilometer North–South Commuter Railway (NSCR), or the Clark–Calamba Railway, the 36-kilometer Metro Manila Subway, new roads and bridges will reach their limit over time with the growing Philippine population and the increasing transport demand in the capital region.

Decongesting Metro Manila and developing nearby provinces such as Bulacan, Pampanga, Laguna, and Cavite are more plausible and part of the long-term options.

What President Marcos wants is a comprehensive and holistic approach to solving the traffic problem—not the piecemeal approach adopted in the past.

The Presidential directive drew an immediate response from our chief economic manager. The National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) also last week called on businesses to invest in the provinces to help alleviate traffic congestion in Metro Manila.

“We support the development of neighboring provinces like Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Batangas, as well as regional centers such as Clark and Pampanga, Laoag, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Bacolod, General Santos City, and others,” said Neda Secretary Arsenio Balisacan.

Proper urban planning, he says, is crucial to resolving Metro Manila’s traffic problems.

“The rapid growth of our economy has led to a significant increase in the number of people traveling for work, running businesses, and even for leisure and tourism. This has caused traffic congestion,” Balisacan said. “We need to consider our entire transportation system and infrastructure, along with the development of our industries, commercial centers, and even residential areas.”

I can only agree with our chief economic planner. Establishing new economic hubs just outside of Metro Manila will hopefully put a stop to the continuous migration of workers as well as students to the metropolis, and freeze the demand for transportation and other infrastructure services.

These new economic centers will result in the parity development of emerging towns and cities in nearby provinces and reduce the over-concentration of the populations and workers in the congested mega metropolis. In turn, the demand for housing and other social services will ease the pressure on the resources of local governments in Metro Manila.

The government should also pursue the decentralization of public services. As our chief economic planner correctly noted, residents in the provinces should have access to quality services near their homes to avoid traveling to Manila. Medical treatments and access to education, for instance, should be made available to residents outside of Metro Manila to decongest the capital region.

The urban decongestion may also take the form of satellite cities to stop workers’ migration and rectify the past mistakes of city planning.

Satellite cities are designed to generate new jobs and they can reverse the migration of workers to Metro Manila. By decongesting Metro Manila, its mayors and local leaders can plan and respond better to the demand for infrastructure and social services of a rising population.

Such cities align with United Nations’ perspective of a sustainable and well-planned city. The adverse effects of poorly planned urbanization, according to the UN, can be seen in some of the huge slums, tangled traffic, greenhouse gas emissions and sprawling suburbs all over the world.

President Marcos’ directive to develop cities and towns outside of Metro Manila, thus, will lead us to the creation of modern metropolises—devoid of traffic congestion and capable of sustaining a decent life.
