Is Manchester Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Manchester, United Kingdom

United Kingdom : Safety by City

  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Northern Ireland
  • Peterborough
  • Southampton

Manchester is located at the heart of Greater Manchester, in the northwest of England.

Manchester is often called “The Capital of the North”, and is known for the role it had in the histories of the English industry and music, as well as its world-known sports teams.

The UK’s largest airport outside of London is located in Manchester, and it’s also the most visited city in England by overseas visitors aside from the capital.

To the youngsters as well as the older and experienced travelers, it offers unique charm, a multitude of shopping, cultural and entertainment opportunities, and edifices.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Manchester

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Manchester isn't the safest city to visit in the UK, but if you apply all the basic precaution measures, and move around areas that are frequented by tourists, you won't have any problems.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: MEDIUM

Transportation and traffic, in general, is dangerous in Manchester. Watch out when crossing the roads, since every year tourists suffer from traffic accidents because the people here drive on the left side of the road which is highly confusing for people from around the world.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: MEDIUM

Pickpockets represent the most common form of street crime in Manchester. They are common and there are even some locations known for pickpockets operating in and around them. Take basic precaution measures.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

You can relax when it comes to natural disasters, because, apart from the common bad weather, there are no threats in Manchester.

MUGGING RISK: LOW

When it comes to mugging and kidnapping, Manchester is relatively safe. However, you should be careful and avoid dangerous areas where you could get attacked.

TERRORISM RISK: HIGH

The entire United Kingdom, and with it Manchester too, has recently been targeted by several terrorist attacks and it is now publicly announced that the threat to the UK is severe.

SCAMS RISK: MEDIUM

Manchester is relatively visited by tourists, and it only makes sense that there will always be people trying to scam them. Always be cautious with people trying to distract you, help you with your luggage, or groups of people acting strange. Always check your change twice and negotiate everything in advance.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: MEDIUM

Manchester is mostly very safe for women to travel to, or as safe as it can get for a tourist, meaning you won't get into any specific trouble just because you're a woman. Just follow your basic common sense and general rules of things to avoid, and you should be fine.

  • So... How Safe Is Manchester Really?

Manchester is mostly safe for tourists in the sense that most of the areas in Manchester where tourists venture are very safe.

Some areas are secluded and not recommended for tourists, like Longsight, Levenshulme, and Gorton, Moss Side, Withington and Fallowfield, parts of Hulme, Cheetham Hill, Wythenshawe, Ordsall, and Ancoats.

Unfortunately, however, Manchester is known for having the highest car crime rate in the UK, as well as the highest rates of car theft and break-ins in all of Europe!

Avoid bringing your car to Manchester, and if you do, be careful to park it in a well-lit area – and never leave anything of value inside!

You should avoid wearing football shirts or showing any kind of support for any football team because such shows of support might end violently since some rivalries are taken very seriously in Manchester.

Violent crime is rare and there is a very low probability that, as a tourist, you will experience anything more than petty crime.

All in all, be wary of pickpockets and know that some parts of Manchester can be dangerous in some areas at night as you can run into groups of drunken people acting strange.

  • How Does Manchester Compare?
  • Useful Information

Member countries of the EU do not need visas to enter Manchester, as well as some other countries, but there is a considerable number of countries that do. Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into the United Kingdom. If you are not sure about your visa status, contact your local British embassy for further information.

The British pound is the currency in Manchester. Keep in mind that this is one of the most expensive countries in Europe and the prices of accommodation in such a famous English city are skyrocketing.

Manchester has a mild climate, generally warm and temperate. It also has a significant amount of rainfall during the year. Summer (Jun-Sep) is very warm and the best time to visit this city.

The UK's largest airport outside of London is located in Manchester. It is called the Manchester Airport and is an international airport located at Ringway, some 13km south-west of Manchester city centre.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we recommend getting travel insurance when traveling to Manchester, since it covers not only the costs of medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

10 Reviews on Manchester

Safer than london.

I’ve lived in Manchester for 11 years, including Hulme, Cheetnam Hill, moss side, ordsall and Wythenshawe and I’ve never heard or seen any issues for people travelling in these areas unless you are part of a gang then you could run into issues in moss side. I found it comical to see these are areas to avoid. All my female friends travel around the city and suburbs (one lives in Cheetnam Hill) at all times of the night with no issues. There are apparently pick pockets in the busy areas, although I’ve not known anyone that’s ever been targeted. Violent crime towards tourists is unheard of. If you’re female and travelling around after a few drinks avoid the gay village late at night, there are gangs of young men that will pester/follow you and it’s not unheard of that women have had their drinks spiked. That is the only real no go area for single women especially if you’re intoxicated.

I was going to mention this. I don’t live in either area but I did go to school in the UK for two years. Staying in London for most of that time, I can tell you after having stayed in Manchester – It is a night and day difference. I feel like London has to be the most unsafe place in the entire UK.

Completely agree. You won’t find any problem unless you’re involved in the gangs

Safe enough

I visited Manchester last year and don’t agree with the football support part bit. Yes, some fans are aggressive but wearing a football jersey is absolutely fine and not everyone is going to pick a fight with you on that.

It becomes a bit scary late night as the metrolink is less crowded, and more n more ticketless drunk people look to get a ride for free, but since I stayed very short, I can’t be a judge.

A fantastic lively city

What a load of rubbish. Manchester is very, very safe. Wear whatever football shirt you choose -nobody will bother you. The night-life is fantastic with bars and restaurants a plenty. Plenty of interesting places to visit in the centre and the surrounding areas. By all means visit Longsight, Gorton ect. There is not much there to see but you will be very safe. Do visit Didsbury and Chorlton in South Manchester. Both lively centres. I’ve lived in Manchester all my life, so take it from me, it is very safe.

In serous need of updating...

When were these articles written and how often are they updated?! Manchester has high terrorism threat? Seriously?! Is this since 2005? I’m shocked at the lack of recent information. Being local and knowing this is not true it makes me doubt all the other information you provide for other destinations. Please, at least, include the date of the article so we make our own assumptions (which by the way, completely defeats the point of your website and service)…

was this written before or after the manchester arena bombing

Strange ratings

High risk of terrorism? This website has really given Manchester a higher terrorism risk than Tehran. The Manchester arena bombing was awful but it was an outlier and there are very very very few (emphasis on very and few) terrorist attacks in Manchester. As someone who lives in London I’m also shocked at how much lower Manchester is. Manchester is definitely safer than London statistically and I definitely feel safer in Manchester when compared to London. Weird ratings

Update on travel threat

Are people asking when this was updated?

I can’t answer that but smarttraveller lifted the safety rating (government site) from exercising a normal amount of caution to an extreme on 29 June 2022 because of updated terrorism risk.

I’m visiting next week and we get updated through travel insurance.

I was born and lived in Oldham and lived there for 30 years working in Manchester for 8 years so I’m familiar with it.

This review is very wrong

This is not accurate, Manchester is 44, which is considered more dangerous then Detroit, St Louis, Baltimore and Memphis, personally I’ve not been to any of these places but I’ve heard that these are the most dangerous cities in United States and Manchester is considered worse!? I’ve been to Manchester loads of times and I know many who have lived there and it’s not that bad. Also the Terrorism is listed as “high” when there hasn’t been a proper terrorist attack since 2017. I’m not sure where they got the information that Manchester is dangerous for American standards but it needs to be changed.

Travel warnings, road closures and advice issued ahead of Manchester Marathon

The Manchester Marathon covers over 26.2 miles of the city centre and surrounding areas, so it's worth knowing how you're going to get about this Sunday.

Danny Jones

With the Manchester Marathon returning to the city and surrounding areas this weekend, Transport for Greater Manchester have issued a fresh batch of warnings and travel guidance for those coming into town on Sunday.

As well all know, the Marathon isn’t only a city centre event, it stretches out to various Greater Manchester boroughs, and with more than 28,000 runners taking part — not to mention upwards of 42,000 spectators expected to turn up too — it’s going to be a busy 24 hours or so.

The 26.2-mile route starts at White City Circle near the Trafford Arch and stretches across the city centre , Old Trafford, Stretford, Sale, Timperley, Altrincham, Chorlton and Hulme. The event really does take over the region.

With that in mind, there are set to be numerous road closures for prolonged periods throughout the day, as well impact on public transport, so it’s good to be prepared. Here’s what to expect.

travel warnings manchester

As TfGM have reiterated, the transport network in central Manchester and Trafford will be very busy before, during and after the race.

Furthermore, people are being advised to leave cars at home to avoid inevitable congestion on surrounding roads, or to at least use Greater Manchester’s park-and-ride services  available at various Metrolink stations and travel to their destinations using the tram.

However, it goes without saying that the services will be extremely busy throughout the day, so, if you can travel flexibly, the predicted quietest time to travel is after 4pm.

Metrolink have confirmed that they will be operating the Altrincham line every six minutes, with more double trams and increased capacity across the network where possible. You can see a full list of stops below:

Lucky for you, once you’ve tapped on and tapped off, most fan corners, cheer zones and regular spots for supporters to gather together should only be a short walk away from your chosen tram stop.

Now, as for buses, many local services will be running along diverted routes throughout the day and even those not directly impacted by the marathon’s road closures could still be affected by displaced traffic, so it’s worth double-checking your usual number and any adjusted stops on race day.

The last road closure is expected to be re-opened at 8pm through Chorlton and Old Trafford towards the end of the course, although a portion of Talbot Road will be closed all weekend and won’t re-open until midnight on Sunday.

Thankfully, the wonderful organisers have you covered; you can see the full list of closures HERE and they have even put together an interactive map for you to check what roads are shut and when:

  • The free bus service that quietly loops around Manchester is being overhauled this weekend
  • Everything you need to know ahead of the 2023 Great Manchester Run
  • Massive dinner party with Andy Burnham announced to raise money to tackle homelessness

Sean Dyball, TfGM’s Head of Customer Experience, said: “We are looking forward to helping thousands of runners and spectators to get to the Manchester Marathon this weekend, and we’re wishing runners the best of luck for Sunday.”

Last but not least, for plenty more useful travel advice for competitors, spectators and everyone else alike arriving in the area this weekend, just simply check out the  TfGM website .

Other than that, all that’s left to do is wish the runners all the best of luck for the 2023 Manchester Marathon and we hope that everyone turning up to cheer them on has a wonderful day and gets from A to B with as little hassle as possible.

See you there!

Bam Margera cancels Manchester shows at Gorilla

Former Jackass star Bam Margera has had to cancel both of his Manchester shows just hours before the first event was supposed to take place due to injury.

The skater, TV personality, filmmaker and former stunt performer is currently in the UK for his Q&A tour and live interview series with DJ and presenter Matt Stocks, having recently played in Glasgow and a pair of shows in the Republic of Ireland.

However, the 44-year-old has unexpectedly had to cancel both of his intimate conversation dates at Gorilla in the city centre, with the venue citing “unforeseen complications emerging from a recent injury”.

He was set to play this evening and again next week on Tuesday, 30 April, with the shows billed as somewhat of a meet and greet with Margera and him “talking from the heart”.

INFO REGARDING BAM MARGERA SHOWS ON 23RD/30TH APRIL "Due to unforeseen complications emerging from a recent injury, it is with regret that this tour is now cancelled. We are sorry to those excited to meet Bam on this tour. Refunds will be available from point of purchase" pic.twitter.com/4OGQ6hUZVq — GORILLA (@thisisgorilla) April 23, 2024

The news comes less than 24 hours after Margera shared a clip of him on the phone complaining to police in the US after a video of him fighting on a street in LA surfaced online .

While details surrounding how the scrap arose and the identity of the other man in the video still remain scarce, Margera has officially claimed self-defence. He can be heard shouting several expletives in the man’s direction throughout the altercation.

Responding to what he called a ‘bum fight’ on his other Instagram page, he tells 911: “Get a police officer here. Los Angeles Police Department is fucking worthless…

“You should be ashamed of yourselves… It’s been two hours of us trying to sleep and, fucking, this dude’s throwing shit everywhere and nobody showed up.”

Speaking to TMZ , a representative from his team reiterated that the unidentified male was the aggressor and eventually exited the situation with both parties leaving without injury at the time.

That being said, is still unclear as to whether the incident and the cancellation of his Gorilla shows in Manchester are linked.

Offering a separate statement directly, he added: “I’m not going to be threatened or attacked without defending myself and my friends or people trying to just walk by this idiot, I aimed only to neutralize the threat and ensure the safety of my crew.”

Bam’s rep told the outlet that the altercation ended with no injuries and the aggressor eventually departed and he is still yet to issue a response after calling off the remainder of his dates.

2024 FA Cup final kick off time confirmed for 3pm

The start time for the 2023/24 FA Cup final has officially been confirmed with holders Manchester City and challengers Manchester United set to kick off at 3pm on Saturday, 25 May.

It’s a Manc final for the second year running and yet another Manchester Derby this year as City beat Chelsea on penalties to try and defend one of their trophies from last season and Man United did just about enough to scrape through against Coventry City this past weekend.

Logistics and travel arrangements for the conclusion of last year’s FA Cup proved problematic, with the Metropolitan Police stressing that they needed the schedule brought forward to try and help curb crowd trouble – the first time the final had been reverted back to a traditional 3pm start since 2011.

Kick-off times for the knockout tournament have varied for the last three finals, having taken place at 4:45 and 5:15pm in the two years prior to 2023’s first-ever all-Manchester final, but it looks as though the same rationale has been put in place once again.

The details of this year's #EmiratesFACup Final, taking place at @wembleystadium Connected by @EE , have been announced 🤩👇 — Emirates FA Cup (@EmiratesFACup) April 23, 2024

As per an official statement by the FA, the final has now been officially confirmed as 3pm BST which has been agreed with local authorities, members of the Safety Advisory Group and broadcasters, as well as with the clubs who must take the time needed for fans to travel to and from Wembley into consideration.

While pockets of fighting broke out before and after the game last year, it was deemed that this time would still be the best kick-off time for all parties involved and there will, of course, be an increased police presence in London for the game next month.

Although prioritising safety comes as welcome news, it’ll no doubt prove to be a blow to broadcasters who prefer later kick-offs when eyeing up peak audience numbers; the game is also set to clash with ITV’s coverage of the rugby as the Investec Champions Cup final is also due to start at 2:45pm.

With last season’s historic FA Cup final being the first time the two sides had met in the final in the entire history of the oldest competition in all of football, it rounded off a massive year of viewing figures for the tournament which has continued to hit record numbers in 2024.

  • Football fan handed ban and hefty fines for ‘tragedy chanting’ during United v Liverpool
  • Mother of Manchester Arena victim to walk to Downing Street to demand new security law
  • Peter Kay’s gigs at Co-op Live postponed as the arena admits it’s not ready for opening act

The game will once again be shown live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and ITV1; ITVX, UTV, as well as STV, and there will no doubt be huge screenings of the game all over Greater Manchester , where an increased police presence is also expected.

With Man City having dropped out of the Champions League, this year’s FA Cup final could see them defend the first of their treble for last season. As for their fierce and historic rivals, this is the second year in a row that both United’s men’s and women’s teams have made it to their respective FA Cup finals .

Is it going to be back-to-back FA Cups for the Blues or are the Reds going to make it two trophies in Erik ten Hag’s first two seasons?

Manchester Warnings and Dangers

One of the most visited cities in all of England, Manchester is a major metropolitan area (its population is over 2.6 million) with rich heritage, a thriving music and arts scene, and proximity to some of the U.K.’s most beautiful natural sights. But as with most major cities, Manchester has crime and other safety concerns that travelers should be aware of prior to before arriving. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe and have a great trip to Manchester.

Crime and Culture

Like most major cities, Manchester has high-crime areas. According to the Manchester Evening News , the Greater Manchester Police receives 200,000 reports of crime each year, including a small percentage of violent crimes. That said, most of the neighborhoods that tourists to Manchester will frequent are relatively safe. For current information, check the Manchester crime map .

Manchester can be a challenging city to navigate by car for those who are unfamiliar with the city, and parking can be expensive. If you do rent a car, be sure to rent from a reputable car rental company with good reviews. If you’re getting around by taxi, be aware that they can be difficult to obtain late at night.

Additional Warnings and Dangers

As a major city, Manchester sees some of the same tourist scams found in other large cities.

Forecast days

Seven day forecast for manchester.

Our weather symbols tell you the weather conditions for any given hour in the day or night. This means that the symbol for 9am shows you what you will see from 9am to 10am.

Chance of precipitation represents how likely it is that rain (or other types of precipitation, such as sleet, snow, hail or drizzle) will fall from the sky at a certain time.

This number shows the air temperature for the time period. You can see the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit by using the dropdown menu.

Feels like temperature considers other factors, such as wind speed and humidity. This gives you a better idea of how the temperature will actually feel at the time.

Wind gust shows the highest wind speed that you should encounter at that time, as winds peak and lull.

Strong winds are shown in bold for speeds of 29 mph or more.

The arrow shows the direction the wind is blowing. The letters show the direction the wind is blowing from (on a standard 16-point compass).

The number represents the average wind speed expected at that time.

The arrow shows the direction of the wind (up is north). If the arrow points from land to sea, the wind will be blowing out to sea (‘offshore’). The number is the average wind speed.

Beware of offshore winds if you are using inflatables, paddle boards or kayaks. These winds can blow you out to sea. Read more about how wind will affect you at the beach.

Visibility measures the distance at which an object can be clearly seen.

Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. If there is a lot of water vapour, the humidity will be high. The higher the percentage of humidity, the wetter it will feel outside.

UV exposure index and the protection required to help keep you safe:

- No risk of UV - It’s safe to stay outside. 1-2 Low - You can safely stay outside. Consider sunscreen in direct sunlight. 3-5 Moderate - Take care during midday hours and do not spend too much time in the sun unprotected. Sunscreen advised. 6-7 High - Seek shade during midday hours, cover up and wear sunscreen. 8-10 Very high - Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm. Shirt, sunscreen and hat are essential. 11 Extreme - Avoid being outside during midday hours. Shirt, sunscreen and hat essential.

This is the average height of the waves, 1-2 miles out to sea. The height of the waves can vary. The individual waves out to sea or at the beach can be higher than this number. If you are close to the water, keep an eye on the waves to stop you or your belongings being swept away.

Read more about calculating the expected height of the waves at the beach.

This is the average number of seconds between one wave and the next, 1-2 miles out to sea. A long wave period (more than 10 seconds) means the waves at the beach may be more powerful. Lifeguards can give you advice on waves if you’re planning to go into the water.

Read more about the period of waves.

The arrow shows the average direction of the waves 1-2 miles out to sea. It indicates how sheltered the beach will be from these waves. If the arrow points towards land, most of the waves’ power will reach the beach. If the arrow is parallel to or pointing away from land, the wave height is likely to be lower on the beach than it is offshore.

Lifeguards can give you advice on waves if you’re planning to go into the water.

UK long range weather forecast

Sunday 28 apr - tuesday 7 may.

An uncertain start to the period though likely unsettled as a frontal system continues to push north across the UK, coupled with strong winds and possible coastal gales, this likely followed by a showery day with potential thunderstorms on Sunday and again on Monday. Beyond this, low pressure patterns continue to dominate with wet weather perhaps more likely to develop in parts of the south and east, though all parts are may see some rain at times. Winds further into the period mostly light to moderate. Temperatures will likely trend near or slightly above average, though some cooler interludes remain possible. Into early May, something of a north-south split looks possible, with relatively drier conditions further to the north and the greatest chance of rain further to the south.

Updated: 15:00 (UTC+1) on Tue 23 Apr 2024

Wednesday 8 May - Wednesday 22 May

In this period, the chances of unsettled weather are slightly less than usual in the north and about the same as usual further south. Therefore, some spells of wetter weather are likely for all, but perhaps especially southern areas with the driest conditions probably further north. Temperatures probably near average though with some cooler interludes possible.. Also worth noting that average temperatures themselves rise by around 1C per week at this time of year.

Buzzcocks in 1977: (from left) Steve Diggle, John Maher, Pete Shelley, Steve Garvey.

A musical tour of Manchester: from the Hallé to the Happy Mondays

Every genre of music has made its mark on Manchester, including dialect ballads, classical, TV theme tunes and all the strands of post-punk. Welcome to the north-west sound

M yth distorts any city’s musical history, and in Manchester myth looms as large as the new Co-op Live , a £365m, 23,500-capacity mega-venue that opens today and will soon be staging big-name acts, including Take That. So, for every occasion a music fan mentions the hit-making boy band or, for that matter, 10cc or the Hollies, a thousand more bark back: Joy Division, the Fall, Happy Mondays. Not that 10cc were a small Manc band, but they peaked before punk and a wall went up at the end of the 1970s that relegated all that had passed prior to 4 June 1976 – the night the Sex Pistols performed at the Lesser Free Trade Hall – to prehistory, as in dinosaurs, fossils, folk musicians. New hagiographies about music impresario Tony Wilson (1950-2007) are no doubt at the printers as I write. But how about we spend half an hour mooching round the Rainy City aboard the free buses and trams in search of the underplayed, surprising and tangential – with a few Gen X/6 Music standards for when we’re stuck at the lights.

You might not think Coronation Street a promising departure point, but it gives us an in to Bowton’s Yard. It’s one of those ditties that may prompt unpleasant memories of the BBC TV series Sit Thi Deawn, but listen carefully and you’ll hear it is in fact a Victorian reality show made song. Written by Marsden-born, Stalybridge-based Samuel Laycock, it inspired Tony Warren when he was devising the characters for his Weatherfield/Salford-set soap opera. Granada Studios on Quay Street also played a leading role in disseminating the north-western sound, from regional accents to theme tunes to the Beatles’ first TV appearance , in October 1962.

Happy Mondays, on new year’s day 1990.

Dialect ballads spoke truth to power after Peterloo – memorialised in 2019 by Jeremy Deller’s burial mound-like stone tump – and during the cotton famine . To spread the word, broadsides were run off at printers around the Oldham Street-Swan Street junction. Lancashire songs were central to the folk revival of the 1960s. Harry Boardman, a singer and collector from Failsworth, unearthed many anonymous songs of protest and historical record. Edward II has recorded a reggae version of the Great Flood, about the time the Medlock burst its banks in 1872. Jennifer Reid , from Middleton, performs The New Poor Law Bill a cappella on her album Gradely Manchester.

The most famous folk number, Ewan MacColl’s Dirty Old Town , alludes to a “gasworks wall” or “gasworks croft”, depending on the version. The works were in Ordsall, bounded by West Egerton Street, Liverpool Street and Regent Road. Prior to their demolition in 2019, a prosaic infographic (not quite a “ muriel ”) was placed on the West Egerton Street wall. The Working Class Movement Library is a repository of MacColl’s work and life and has significant holdings of sheet music and song lyrics.

The Hallé Orchestra was founded by Sir Charles Hallé, who was conductor for the first concert at the Free Trade Hall on 30 January 1858. The Hallé premiered Elgar’s Symphony No 1 and Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No 8. The latter, dedicated to the orchestra’s celebrated conductor John Barbirolli, took place at the Kings Hall , a converted tea house at Belle Vue (demolished to make way for a car auction centre) on 2 May 1956. The BBC recorded it a few days later. The third movement, a cavatina, is a swirl of lark-like ascents and descents.

Since 1996, the orchestra’s HQ has been the purpose-built, vibration-proof Bridgewater Hall , with former St Peter’s church in Ancoats, a hulking redbrick Romanesque building, used for rehearsals, recordings and intimate shows. Manchester has an opera house , originally known as the New theatre. Recent shows include The Full Monty and Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out, but it may get weightier fare as the ENO relocates to Manchester over the next five years. The region’s greatest opera singer was, like so much Manchester talent, from way outside town. Tom Burke, a miner from Leigh, was known as the “ Lancashire Caruso ”. What used to be the city’s Hippodrome is now a Wetherspoons named after him.

The Manchester School includes Accrington-born Harrison Birtwistle, Salford’s Peter Maxwell Davies and German immigrant Alexander Goehr, who met at the Royal Manchester College of Music in the 1950s. They founded the New Music Manchester group with pianist John Ogdon, who had attended Manchester Grammar School, and trumpeter Elgar Howarth. Exponents of avant-garde experimentation, they shunned cotton-themed concertos and any kind of parochialism.

Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl in the late 1950s/early 1960s.

If Unesco dispensed rosettes for demolition, Manchester would have many. Most of the old taverns that hosted turns, popular dance salons and music hall venues have been razed, together with mills, warehouses and factories. Concert halls and fun palaces were removed to make way for multistorey car parks and office blocks. The Free Trade Hall , where locals including Gracie Fields, Van der Graaf Generator and James played, as well as Dylan (AKA “ Judas ” as he was called at a gig there in 1966 ), Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Genesis, is now a hotel . Does a ribald, rollicking spirit live on from the boozy days of industrial Manchester? Certainly the refurbished Band on the Wall – which reopened in March – celebrates its location on the foundations of the George & Dragon and nearby Rising Sun pubs.

Every genre of popular music surfaced in Manchester between 1950 and the present, including big band, beat, rhythm and blues, soul, chart-oriented pop, punk, goth and all the strands of post-punk. There are not as many landmarks as songs, partly because, as mentioned, the wrecking ball is unsentimental and also, because pop stars have generally used their art to get away – lyrically first, and then physically. The Bee Gees, who claimed to have practised harmonising at their childhood home at 51 Keppel Road , Chorlton-cum-Hardy, never knowingly screamed a word about the town.

Northern soul, which arrived via Liverpool docks and Burtonwood airbase, drew large followings in Stoke, Wigan, Blackpool and, before any of those , Manchester. The Twisted Wheel on Brazennose Street and, later, Whitworth Street, had gigs by the Hollies and Freddie and the Dreamers, and less well-known bands such as Powerhouse 6 , but is best known for its legendary northern soul nights. The building has gone but Twisted Wheel “lives on”, according to a members-only Facebook page , at Area, 50 Sackville Street. The Ritz, on Whitworth St, survives as an O2 franchise. Originally opened as a dance hall (with a sprung floor) in 1927, it hosted a Dancing in the Dark evening in the 50s and 60s, fronted by Crumpsall’s Phil “King of the Ritz” Moss and his Band (which later became a stalwart on TV’s Come Dancing), and went on to transition through beat, northern soul, disco and mainstream rock scenes. The mobile phone firm also owns the famous art deco-style Apollo , long a fixture for bands on tour. Stockport’s MoR hitmakers 10cc were a classic art school, let’s-go-to-London-asap outfit, but they played here when they came home, as did Sad Café.

The Pistols concert in 1976 made the Lesser Free Trade Hall a holy-of-holies in Manc muso circles, but the Electric Circus , in Collyhurst (birthplace of pianist and crooner Les Dawson), earned its credentials through many seminal punk performances, including the first gig by Warsaw (Joy Division’s first name), and shows by Buzzcocks, John Cooper Clarke, the Fall, the Nosebleeds and Slaughter and the Dogs, among others. The fact it had previously been a cinema, Bernard Manning’s Top Hat club and a bingo hall should surely have made it one for the heritage buffs to list.

The Bridgewater Hall Manchester

Richard Boon and Howard Devoto launched the New Hormones label in 1977 at a then ramshackle, now listed former hat merchants’ warehouse at 50 Newton Street . The first release, the Spiral Scratch EP , was a punk watershed and a declaration that bands needed neither London nor major labels. In 1980, Boon and others started up The Beach Club (a reference to the Situationist slogan “Under the pavement, the beach!”) at Oozits on Newgate Street. In 1978, Factory Records began as a WFH DIY disruptive startup at Alan Erasmus’s first-floor flat at 86 Palatine Road (now blue plaqued), only moving to a proper HQ on Charles Street in 1990 – where it was officially incorporated with the catalogue number FAC 251 (the name of a venue for cover bands on the site, part owned by Peter Hook). The Factory was the name of a night at the Russell Club on Royce Road in Hulme that ran from 1978-80; two years later the Haçienda (FAC 51) opened in a former yacht builders’ shop and warehouse on Whitworth Street West, beside the Rochdale Canal. The site is now occupied by “ iconic ” apartments.

The last Factory catalogue number, FAC 501, was used for the plaque on Wilson’s coffin, and no number adorns designer Peter Saville’s headstone for his business partner in Southern Cemetery . Fabled producer Martin Hannett is also buried at the necropolis – said to be entered via the Smiths’ Cemetry Gates.

There’s no better terminus than a musical graveyard. Inevitably, dozens of Manchester music sites are missing from this hop, skip and jump, including Rochdale’s recording studios, Festival of the Tenth Summer venues and countless bedrooms, garages and rave locations. But most tell versions of the same story, just as some songs seem like Venn diagrams of influence; Oasis by Happy Mondays sounds like New Order with lyrics by Morrissey or Ian Curtis, on a bad day (“You went too far, and it’s gone all the wrong way”). If you want to aurally vacuum up every Manc motif in a single song, steam on in to Mike Garry and Joe Duddell’s St Anthony: An Ode to Anthony H Wilson (Andrew Weatherall Remix; lyrics here ), perhaps while walking from the thrusting Aviva Studios/Factory International behemoth to the Epping Walk Bridge to search hopelessly – à la 80s – for Hulme Crescents and the dead souls of yesteryear.

What fuels nascar legend jimmie johnson’s love of travel.

Johnson at his Motorsports Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Most of us will never know what it feels like to stand on a stage and give a speech after being enshrined in the hall of fame for our chosen industry. Driving legend Jimmie Johnson surely does. Already this year, Johnson has been inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Arguably the most skilled person ever behind a steering wheel, Johnson has a record-tying seven NASCAR Cup Series championships, 83 race wins and an astounding 374 top-10 finishes.

Though he’s not on the track nearly as much these days as he used to be, the 48-year-old Johnson hasn’t said when he’s going to put his car in park forever. For now, the Southern California native seems content owning the Legacy Motor Club team, racing part time in the States while living in London with his family and traveling during any free time between.

During one of those recent pit stops in the schedule, Johnson sat with Forbes Travel Guide to talk racing, retirement and the one Asian country he hasn’t reached yet.

What’s been the proudest on-track accomplishment of your illustrious career?

It’s hard to pick one. I was at it for a while. There were these breakthrough moments in my career where particular victories unlocked the next opportunity. When I go back to my younger days, there are so many moments. But I would say one that’s very logical and one many will grasp and understand is winning my seventh championship and being able to tie Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.

In addition to that amazing accomplishment, that [2016 Ford EcoBoost 400] was probably one of the more challenging races I had. I think I only led a lap and a half of the entire event. But I led the lap that mattered the most. The emotional roller coaster that I went on that day, along with my family and fan base, [was a lot]. I was convinced, with 15 laps to go, that it wasn’t my year. I wasn’t going to be the champion. And 15 laps later, I was standing there on the front straightaway, couldn’t even control myself. I was just floundering around and jumping all over the place like a fool.

The two-time Daytona 500 winner.

You haven’t retired, but you’re not fully active on the NASCAR schedule. Give your definition of where you are in your career right now.

Yeah, it’s funny. When I stepped away from full-time driving in NASCAR, that was my announcement — that I would no longer race full time in NASCAR. The label “retirement” was thrown on me straight away. I spent a couple of years in IndyCar, living out a childhood dream of mine of doing sports car racing. I felt like I would come back to NASCAR, given the right opportunity.

Much like a musician, I can’t put my instrument down. I feel very fortunate that, in my sport, I can continue to do it late into my career where a lot of stick-and-ball guys in their late 20s and mid-30s, that opportunity goes away for them. So, having this great sport that I can still compete in at 48 [is wonderful]. Believe me, I plan to push it further — as long as I get the green light from family and sponsors.

I’m very interested in [racing in] the marquee events. I’m still very interested in racing and the experience I have in the car. My focus has changed a little bit here, becoming a team owner. It’s been a nice shift for me because it’s allowing me the head space to enjoy the limited schedule that I’m running but also fighting for a greater cause and making Legacy Motor Club stronger.

You mention the marquee events. Let’s talk about the travel to Daytona and Bristol and all these top events. What are some things you do to stay sharp for all the moving around that you do during the season?

I feel like being aware of the time zone I’m flying to and trying to get some rest accordingly has been wise for me. Of course, staying hydrated [is key]. I always load up on a bunch of vitamins. More so than normal. When I know I’m going to fly [I take vitamins] just to try to fight off any viruses that are floating around or exposure I might have to illness.

I’ve always found that when I arrive somewhere, if I can get in a little workout — I’m just trying to recenter myself; nothing crazy — or just go outside and get a nice walk or go for a jog [it’s beneficial]. My wife loves to walk, so we’ll often do a walk. If I’m solo, I’ll go out and just try to get a run in and take in the sights of wherever I am. That grounding moment gets my heart rate up and helps pull me into that time zone.

Johnson enjoys traveling around Europe with his family.

Have you been able to explore the U.K. much?

Yeah, it’s been adventurous and fun. We know we’re here for a short period of time, so we’re trying to maximize what we have in and around England. We’ve already been to Scotland and Ireland. We’ve been to Holland, Spain and France multiple times. We’re leaving tomorrow for Japan with our kids.

Through the long grind of racing nonstop, my wife and I have always loved travel and have tried to spend time in Europe. Really anywhere that we can go. There were a few summers when my family came to Europe and was based here while I stayed in the States and worked. When I would have an off weekend — there aren’t many in NASCAR — I would join my family and spend a couple of weeks and then go back to racing. We just have a love of travel, a love of culture and a love of culinary experiences.

We’re maximizing our time here in the U.K., doing anything and everything we can. Even if it’s a weekend that we stay in the U.K., we’re off in a car. We’re in the countryside. This last weekend, we were exploring and eating at great little countryside pubs and staying in a quaint little cottage. Something you would never do in the States, right?

Will you be exploring Japan for the first time?

Yeah, first time in. We’re avid skiers, and it’s been tough for me to not chase some snow because I understand the snow is just epic in Japan. But it’s much more of a cultural experience with taking the girls. We’re hitting four different cities, starting in Tokyo and Kyoto . I can’t remember the other two.

Maybe Osaka ?

Yeah, I think Osaka is one. But there’s another one. My wife is a gallerist and owns an art gallery. There’s this little town we’re going to that has a permanent art installation that’s on an island.

When you pack for Japan or any of your other trips, what are a few things that are always in your luggage?

Well, being in England, your wellies [or rain boots] and your slicker are mandatory because it’s going to rain. Happens all the time. And that’s new for me. I didn’t need to plan on rain so much in the States.

I would also say my earbuds. I’ve also found that listening to — and you might find this ironic — sound baths or Tibetan bowls is something that’s calming for me and helps me sleep. I found some that tuck in [my ears] that I can sleep with. I pop them into sleep on flights. Or, if I need to try to nap to get into a certain time zone, the Tibetan bowls just knock me out.

The Queen City is Johnson’s U.S. home.

Where will home base be when you move back to the U.S.?

I grew up in Southern California but moved to North Carolina in ’97 and have been there since. Charlotte is the town that we live in, and we still have our place there, and we’ll return whenever this adventure wraps.

What do you miss most about Charlotte?

Charlotte’s an amazing city. We’ve really been able to enjoy its growth. I’ve lived there for so long now that I’ve been able to watch it change, grow up and mature. It’s been nice to be a part of that. I’ve come to better understand that Charlotte’s not going anywhere. It’s always going to be there. But what I miss are the people. Been there for so long. I have so many great relationships, friends, coworkers and on and on. I truly miss the people.

You’re scratching Japan off the bucket list next. Where are a few other places you want to go but haven’t yet?

We had a trip planned to Thailand that, unfortunately, we had to cancel due to some civil unrest years ago. And then my wife was pregnant with our second daughter, Lydia. We found out just two or three weeks before our trip. She was so ill with morning sickness that we had to cancel the trip a second time.

There’s still so much of the world to see. But our 20th wedding anniversary is coming up this December. We need to make that trip. I’m not sure if it’ll work for that celebratory trip, but at some point, we want to go experience it.

FAA lifts temporary ground stop of Alaska Airlines flights after technical issue is resolved

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 airliners sit on the tarmac

The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop for all Alaska Airlines flights Wednesday after grounding the planes earlier as a result of a computer problem at the carrier.

The Seattle-based airline said in a statement that an issue arose “while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance.”

The FAA initially approved a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights starting at approximately 10:50 a.m. ET.

It was lifted just before 11:45 a.m. ET.

It wasn't immediately clear how many flights were affected. An Alaska spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Travellers heading to Indonesia have been warned to check their passports before heading out.

Some 335,209 Brits visited Indonesia last year, which includes sought-after locations such as Bali, Lombok and its capital, Jakarta. The Foreign Office updated its advice to holidaymakers on Wednesday April 23.

The update warns: "To enter Indonesia, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and have at least 2 blank pages. Check with your travel provider or the nearest Indonesian Embassy or Consulate to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet the requirements."

READ MORE: Foreign Office updates travel warnings for several popular tourist destinations

Brits aren't new to checking their passport expiry dates. Since the UK left the European Union , travellers' passports must be valid for three months after their planned return date. They must also have a passport which was issued less than 10 years before their departure date.

However holidaymakers may not be so familiar with the two-page rule. If you have less than two empty stamp pages on your passport, then you'll need to renew it. Countries including Italy, South Africa and India also implement the two-page rule.

Those heading to Indonesia should also be aware of the locations the Foreign Office advises against travelling to. These include within 6km of the crater of Mount Ruang in Northern Sulawesi after erupted on 16 April 2024 as well as within 3km of the crater of Mount Marapi in West Sumatra.

All travel within 5 km of the Mount Sinabung crater in Karo Regency, North Sumatra is advised against, as is all travel within 5 km of the crater of Mount Semeru in Lumajang Regency, East Java. Travel to the southeast area of Mount Semeru along the Besuk Kobokan river (approximately 13 km from the crater) is also advised against, while tourists should stay at least 500 m from the Besuk Kobokan riverbank.
