Business | Terry Savage: Where’s my tax refund? How to check your federal or state refund status
What do you do if your IRS tax refund still hasn’t arrived? Now that the IRS has received most 2023 tax filings, and should have sent your refund, it’s worth investigating.
How to proceed depends on how you filed, who filed for you (such as an accounting firm, online tax prep service or tax preparer) and how you expected your refund to arrive.
First, if you’re expecting an online refund deposit, carefully check your tax return to make sure you listed your banking information correctly. And check your bank statement online, which you’ve probably been doing regularly.
If you used a tax preparation service, contact them first. Many services designate your refund to come back to THEIR account — and you might not have noticed that. Often, they say they will take their tax prep fees out of your refund — and this is their way of making sure they have access to the money! You might need to contact them to get your remaining refund.
Check your return to see if the person who prepared it gave instructions that your anticipated refund instead be applied to next year’s taxes! Perhaps you missed that in the discussions.
If, at this point, you’re still frustrated and have tried to call the IRS but can’t get through, here are some suggestions. Do them in this order:
— Where’s my refund? Go to www.IRS.gov and in the search box put the term “where’s my refund.” That will take you to a page that explains that your refund information should be posted 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, three or four days after you e-file a prior-year return, or four weeks after you file a paper return.
Or go directly to www.IRS.gov/refunds . Click on the “search” button and you’ll be asked to input your Social Security number, tax year, filing status and the exact whole dollar refund amount shown on your tax return.
When you click “submit,” you’ll get the latest status on your refund.
If the refund is for the current (2023) filing, you can also call their specific toll-free number: 800-829-1954. For previous years, you must check online.
If you see that your refund has been issued, but you haven’t received it, you can start a “trace” to track it down.
— Office of Taxpayer Assistance. If you’ve followed the above steps and still can’t find your refund, it’s time to turn to the Office of Taxpayer Assistance. Go to www.IRS.gov and in the search box put in “taxpayer assistance.” That will lead you to the appropriately named Form 911. It’s a short form, and the way to get the process started.
The form comes in both English and Spanish, so scroll down to get the correct form you need.
— Taxpayer Advocate Service. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is a separate, independent organization within the IRS. They offer free help to guide you through the process of resolving tax problems that you haven’t been able to solve on your own. To reach the closest office (each state has at least one), go to www.IRS.gov and enter “taxpayer advocate” in the search box. That leads you to a page explaining how the Taxpayer Advocate Service works, and on that page there is a search box that will give you the closest office. You can also call the Taxpayer Advocate Service toll-free at 877-777-4778.
— Create an IRS.gov account. This little-known process allows you to see exactly what’s going on in your “account” with the IRS! It’s what the IRS telephone reps turn to when answering your questions. To create your own IRS.gov account, go to www.IRS.gov/Account .
The first thing you’ll see is a “Sign-In” box, which will be confusing since you don’t already have an account. Click anyway, and the next page will allow you the option to create an ID.me account via a secure service provider to the IRS. To create that account, you’ll need your Social Security number as well as a government-issued picture ID, such as your driver’s license. It’s worth the time to go through this process.
The IRS may seem impenetrable. But if you use the technology correctly, you can get answers and help. And that’s The Savage Truth.

Here's how to track the status of your 2024 tax refund
By Aimee Picchi
Edited By Anne Marie Lee
April 22, 2024 / 12:35 PM EDT / CBS News
More than 30 million Americans waited until the last two weeks of the tax-filing season to send their returns to the IRS. Many of them may now be wondering how long it will take for their refunds to hit their bank accounts.
It's not a small financial issue, as tax refunds often represent many households' largest check throughout the year, helping families pay down debt, build up emergency savings or even splurge on purchases. The average 2024 tax refund is 3.8% higher than a year ago, at $2,948, according to the latest IRS data.
Luckily, there are a few easy ways to track the status of your refund, such as the IRS' "Where's my refund?" website or its IRS2Go mobile app, which can be used on mobile phones and other similar devices. For the current tax season, the IRS said it improved the tracking services by providing more detailed answers when people make their queries.
"This is the largest windfall that many people get all year," Bankrate senior industry analyst Ted Rossman told CBS New York. "It's actually not a great practice to get a tax refund — it's actually better to adjust your withholding so you get your money in bits and pieces throughout the year."
But some people like getting a lump sum in their tax refund because it effectively works as a forced savings plan, providing them with one large check each year that they can then put into service, whether that's paying down debt or making a large purchase, Rossman noted.
Here's how to track your refund.
Check the IRS' "Where's My Refund?" website
The IRS says you can check the status of your refund through its " Where's My Refund ?" page as soon as 24 hours after your return was filed electronically.
You'll need to provide the site with a few basic pieces of information:
- The tax year you're checking
- Your Social Security or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN)
- Your filing status
- And the exact refund amount on your return
The IRS also said it updated the service to provide more information to taxpayers, such as alerting them if the agency needs them to respond to a letter requesting more data.
Look at the IRS2Go app on your phone
The IRS also has a mobile app called IRS2Go that works similarly to the "Where's My Refund?" website. The app, which you can download the app on any iOS or Android device, asks for several pieces of information to pull up your refund data:
- Your Social Security number or ITIN
- And your exact refund amount
Call the IRS for an update
The IRS operates a phone line for refund data, although it says it's aimed at people who don't have internet access.
If that's your situation, you can call the refund hotline at 800-829-1954 to check on the current year's tax refund. To check on an amended return for prior years, call 866-464-2050 .
Can I see when my tax refund will hit my bank account?
Yes, but only when the IRS is closer to sending the check. The app tracks three stages:
- First, the apps will show you that your return has been received by the IRS, which means the agency is processing the form.
- Secondly, the apps will tell you when the IRS approved the refund, and will provide a date when it expects to issue the check.
- Lastly, the services will alert you when the IRS sent the refund to your bank via direct deposit or when they mailed it. It can take up to 5 days for the refund to land in your bank account, while a paper check may require several weeks for delivery, the IRS says.

RJ Davis’s Return to North Carolina Is a Win in the NIL Era
- Author: Kevin Sweeney
In this story:
It wasn’t long ago that men’s college basketball’s All-Americans were essentially locks to head to the pros.
There’s only so much to accomplish while still in college, and climbing that mountain to be one of the sport’s best usually meant it was time to move on, whether or not the player’s pro prospects were strong.
The name, image and likeness era has changed that.
The North Carolina Tar Heels ’ RJ Davis is poised to be the latest star to extend his stay in college basketball. As first reported by CBS Sports’s Matt Norlander , Davis is expected to announce his return to North Carolina for a fifth and final season in 2024–25. Once officially announced, he’ll be the third consensus first-team All-American in as many years to return to school the following season. In the decade prior, just two first-teamers elected to return to school for another year, with one (Doug McDermott) a special case as the son of his head coach.
There’s no question NIL (or at least the NCAA’s shaky free-for-all rollout) has caused plenty of headaches across the sport. It has catalyzed an already active transfer portal as players hunt for big paydays and created an uncomfortable dynamic of coaches seemingly blaming fans for not spending even more of their hard-earned money to build great teams. It’s by no means a perfect system and one that increasingly feels like a stopgap for some form of true pay-for-play that will eventually come to college sports.
But if there’s one thing the NIL era has brought to college hoops, it’s something fans of the sport have been pining for for years: star retention. Davis will enter next season as a leading candidate for National Player of the Year and a recognizable star to be one of the faces of the sport. He’ll have a real chance of topping Tyler Hansbrough as UNC’s all-time leading scorer, currently 784 points behind the Carolina legend, coincidentally the exact number of points Davis scored in 2023–24. Hansbrough spent more than a decade as the last defending NPOY to return to school, a face of the sport few could top. While neither Oscar Tshiebwe nor Zach Edey quite reached Hansbrough’s level of fame in the sport, their respective returns were paradigm-shifters for the sport and have set the tone for a new era of not needing to rush out of college basketball.
Davis’s whirlwind career has seen some remarkable ups and downs. He started his career with the Heels on Roy Williams’s final team in Chapel Hill, coming off the bench on a middling 18–11 Carolina team that got blasted in the first round of the NCAA tournament by the Wisconsin Badgers. As a sophomore, Hubert Davis entrusted Davis with the point guard position, and he helped key UNC’s Cinderella run through March that came up a few points short of a national championship. Then, Davis was part of one of the most disappointing teams in recent college hoops memory, a 2022–23 Heels club that went from preseason No. 1 to missing the Big Dance. And with his back against the wall, Davis delivered a masterful senior campaign, blossoming into the nation’s best guard and leading North Carolina to a No. 1 seed. His return gives him one more chance to etch himself into North Carolina lore with a national championship and, if nothing else, checker his name throughout all of the Chapel Hill record books.
In a pre-NIL world, Davis is almost assuredly off to the pros, maximizing his stock off a monster season. He’d likely have gotten a two-way contract had he gone all in on the NBA draft process this spring and begun his journey of attempting to carve out a niche in the NBA. Instead, he can stay in college for an extra year, be the unquestioned star and likely make as much, if not more, money than he would have on the NBA’s fringes next season. That may offend some of the sport’s hard-line traditionalists, but you’d have a hard time convincing me that it isn’t great for the overall health of the sport.
Imagine the buzz next season’s Duke vs. North Carolina rivalry games will have. The last few meetings since Mike Krzyzewski and Williams’s retirements have felt a bit stale. But Davis as the face of the Heels vs. freshman sensation Cooper Flagg and the Blue Devils? Now that’s a regular-season matchup with some juice for the casual college basketball observer. Fans will never stop tuning into the single-elimination theater that is the NCAA tournament, but the nonstop roster turnover that has hit basically every program in the country does make it harder for the non-diehards to follow the sport the rest of the year. The Caitlin Clark phenomenon can be credited for some of the NCAA women’s tournament’s massive ratings boom, but so can having teams and storylines (the LSU Tigers’ repeat attempt, the South Carolina Gamecocks’ revenge) that carried over from year to year. Early NBA departures will always make that hard to accomplish in the men’s game, but players like Davis with shakier pro outlooks coming back makes a huge difference.
College basketball is better when its best players want to stay longer. NIL is helping make that a reality, and that’s worth celebrating. The more players who follow RJ Davis’s lead, the better.

Where's my income tax refund? NJ residents need to be patient
2-minute read.
Tax day on April 15 — anxiety-inducing as it is was — has come and gone. Now comes the exciting part: tax refunds.
But where are they? Experts say you have to be patient.
According to the New Jersey Division of Taxation, returns can take a minimum of four weeks to process.
Paper processing meanwhile can take a minimum of 12 weeks to process.
While you're impatiently waiting, the state taxation division allows you to check on the status of your return. You’ll have to enter your Social Security, the amount that you’re owed and the tax year in question.
Tax preparation firm H&R Block said delays can arise if the state tax department needs to verify your information, if there were math errors or incomplete information in your return, or if you used more than one form type to complete your return.
Federal income tax return takes 21 days
As for the federal tax refund, those take 21 days from when you’ve filed your return, according to the Internal Revenue Service .
Refunds from paper returns typically take roughly six to eight weeks, the IRS added . The IRS also allows you to check on your tax refund status online .
Is a tax refund good?
Not necessarily, financial experts told NorthJersey.com affiliate USA TODAY , because it means you've been giving up too much of your money in taxes throughout the year. If less is taken out for taxes, you’ll get a smaller refund but more money in each paycheck for expenses or saving and investing, they argue.
What to do with your tax refund
The average tax refund size in the U.S. is $3,244, the IRS said .
One way you could use your tax refund is to pay off debt, or put the money into your retirement sayings, like an IRA, suggested personal finance website Bankrate .
You could also contribute to your savings by putting the money in a high-yield savings account, or putting the money in a mutual fund, Bankrate says.
