TRAVELSLOVENIA.ORG – All You Need To Know To Visit Slovenia
All you need to know to visit lake bled in slovenia, introducing lake bled.
Lake Bled is a picture-perfect lake of iconic beauty. It was formed at the end of the Ice Age and is 2,120 meters long, 1,380 meters wide and up to 30 meters deep. It lies at the foothills of the Julian Alps in the northwestern corner of Slovenia, where it adjoins the town of Bled.
Lake Bled Review
In Slovenia, there is a real place that looks like it came from the fairy tale world! That place is the extraordinary Lake Bled. With an iconic church nestled in a tiny island in the middle of the lake and a spectacular medieval Gothic castle built on a 130-meter cliff overlooking the lake, it’s a fairytale setting. The color of the water is mesmerizing! You can easily walk all around the lake on a lovely flat path. It’s truly like walking through a fairytale. Lots of nice places to stop for a rest or get a snack on the way. It takes between one and one and a half hours to walk around the lake, which is a little more than 2 kilometers long and a little less than 1,5 kilometers wide, with a maximum depth of 30 meters.
In the middle of the lake there is a charming little tear-shaped island, the only island in Slovenia. You can reach it either by swimming their, renting a rowing boat and docking at the island or by taking a traditional gondola-like wooden boat, called a Pletna. The Pletna boat is operated by the pletna oarsman who rows standing up. This profession is very respected and it’s transmitted from generation to generation. The island has several buildings, the main one being the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, built in the 15th century. There are exactly ninety-nine steps that lead from the dock to the church and there is also a wishing bell that grants you one wish upon ringing it.
Lake Bled has the longest swimming season of any alpine lake in Europe (from June to late September). The summer temperatures reach up to 28 degree Celsius. There are designated areas for swimming but most people ignore them and swim wherever they like. It’s free to swim in the lake but there is also a paid swimming area called Grajska Bathing Area that features a climbing wall, swings, a sandpit, two water slides and a nice patch of grass to relax on. Lake Bled is also ideal for rowing since it provides all the natural elements it requires. Row boats can be hired from places all around the lake and it usually takes around two to three hours for a trip to the island and back again with enough time to explore. The lake is also a popular spot for fishermen. Fishing for catfish, pike, carp and lake trout is permitted.
To get panoramic views of Lake Bled you need to visit Bled Castle, a medieval castle built on a cliff overlooking the lake and the city of Bled. Seeking more views of the lake you can follow the steep forest trail up to Velika Osojnica for postcard views of Lake Bled from above. Lake Bled is truly a treasure of Slovenia.

Everything you Need to Know Before Visiting Lake Bled, Slovenia
Everything you Need to Know Before Visiting Lake Bled, Slovenia – And What to Avoid
Slovenia is home to some of Europe’s most spectacular landscapes. However, it is not typically high on many tourist’s bucket lists. One of the most popular locations within Slovenia is the extraordinarily beautiful Lake Bled. With it stunning islands and surrounding mountains, it’s easy to see the appeal. If you are visiting Lake Bled for the first time, there are a few things you need to know to really enhance your visit. In this post we have put together some useful tips and local knowledge to help you prepare for your trip to Lake Bled. We have also included some advice, based on our experience, about what you might want to avoid when visiting Lake Bled, and what you can do instead.
Easily accessible from Ljubljana
If you are based in Ljubljana, and want to spend a day out of the city, then you are in luck! A visit to Lake Bled can be easily done in a day and on public transport – but more on how to get there later. The Lake is only about an hour outside of the capital. This means that most visitors to Ljubljana, and indeed locals, will take day trips up to the lake making it easily accessible.
Lake Bled is an Absolutely Stunning Location
We have visited quite few lakes and Lake Bled is definitely up there as one of the most beautiful. The gorgeous church in the centre of the lake with soaring mountains surrounding the water, makes a perfect picture. There is also the imposing Bled castle looking on from the lake corner.
You Can Easily Walk Around the Lake
The path around the lake is easy to walk. It is pretty flat all the way round and the path is concrete and smooth. We wore hiking kit as we were going a little further into the mountains, but normal shoes are totally fine for walking around the lake. It takes around an hour, depending on how often you stop for photos – this will be a lot!
Lake Bled is Not an Untouched Natural Site
This point can be either a positive or a negative, depending on how you view it. On the plus side, there are loads of amenities, especially in the summer. On the lake there are assault courses, rowing boats and paddle boards. Around the lake there are cafes, restaurants, hotels, campsites and even a small boardwalk at the top end of the lake. This means you can find whatever you need pretty easily. However, if you are going in search of wilderness, peace and tranquillity, this is maybe not the place to find it – certainly not in the summer.
Despite a lot going on around the lake, the water was still beautifully clear and we could see plenty of fish below the surface.
If you are looking to go a bit more off the beaten track, there are several hikes starting from Lake Bled that will take you off into the surrounding mountains. This will mean you manage to avoid the crowds that descend during the summer.
The Town of Bled Can Get Very Busy
In the height of summer, the crowds descend on the town of Bled and the nearby lake. There is a lot to do in the area and it is within easy reach of Ljubljana, making it a popular spot for tourists and locals. As it is a small town, the high volume of visitors is very noticeable, especially on the roads. During the off season, it is definitely a quieter place but there is still enough to see if you decide to visit then. If you are visiting Lake Bled for the first time, it is good to keep this in mind.
Arrive Early if You Plan to Visit Lake Bled
If you are visiting Lake Bled for the first time, the best way to avoid the peak season crowds is to be up with the birds and get out early. We arrived at about 07:30 and pretty much had the place to ourselves. It also meant it wasn’t too hot for us pasty Scots! We found that by around 09:30 the place had begun to get quite a bit busier.
How to Get to Lake Bled
As we mentioned, it is super easy to get to Lake Bled from Ljubljana. We have put together a comprehensive guide HERE . that includes driving and public transport options and we have included costs and links to timetables.
Parking Around the Lake
Parking at Lake Bled can be a bit of a challenge. Especially if you don’t arrive early in the morning during the summer. We saw a few places to park, mostly near the town. Carparks were around €20 for 4 hours or €30 for the day.
Don’t Miss the Taboggan
Just outside of the town there is a Taboggan run that is a must when visiting Lake Bled for the first time! This is open during the summer months as it becomes a popular place to ski during the winter. There is a chairlift that will take you to the top of the run Here, you can admire the panoramic views over the lake before you speed along the railed track that snakes down the side of the hill.
Be Prepared to Queue
During peak season, many of the restaurants, sites and activities are busy, so be prepared to queue for a while. Another great reason to arrive early at Lake Bled – to beat the queues!
Avoid Using the Horse and Cart
There are several horse and carts in the area that will offer to take you where you want to go during your visit to Lake Bled. The horses looked in fairly good condition but in the summer it is very hot and they work hard. Personally, we would avoid using them and would always chose to walk.
Where to Find the Best Photo Points at Lake Bled
This scenic location seems to have a photo opp at every turn! Here are a few of the best –
- Ojstrica – a shot 20 minute climb up will reward you will amazing views right across the lake (we did this one)
- Mala Osojnica – a slightly longer climb (maybe 30-40 minutes) you will see the lake from higher up
- The Boardwalk at the top of the lake – Razgledna Tocka
- There is a small jetty with a heart sculpture – The Heart of Bled – Blejsko Srce
- Jezro Bled – from here, you can include the castle in your shot
- Lago di Bled – for a closer look at the church on the island
What to Pack when Visiting Lake Bled
Some of these go without saying, however, we have put together a helpful list for you so you won’t forget any of the basics you might need when visiting Lake Bled and the surrounding area.
- Hiking boots or shoes
- Snacks for the hike
- Water bottle (at least a litre in summer). You can fill up at a few pints on the way
- Weather appropriate clothing such as windbreaker, hiking socks, buff/hat, and fleece. Make sure to wear layers to account for the changing conditions if you plan on hiking further
- Insect repellent
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- Map or downloaded GPS or map application on your phone
- Decent camera with plenty of space for pictures of the spectacular scenery
Overall, we absolutely love visiting lakes, castles and nature, and Lake Bled was no exception. It was slightly different to how we had imagined but beautiful non the less. With this guide, we hope to make your fist visit to Lake Bled unforgettable!

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Lake Bled
Lake Bled is one of Slovenia’s most popular tourist destinations. Located in the Julien Alps, Lake Bled is as serene as it looks in photos and a visit to this romantic lake is as surreal as you would be led to believe. Below is the ultimate guide to visiting Lake Bled which will help you plan your stay.
Introduction to Lake Bled
This Lake Bled travel blog will give you all the information you need to plan your visit to Lake Bled. Whether you are visiting for just a day visit or are planning a week or more of adventures in summer, this guide will tell you everything you need to know to visit Lake Bled.
How to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled
The best things to do in lake bled, the best time of year to visit lake bled, recommended hotels, restaurants and tours in lake bled, things to do near lake bled.
Lake Bled is a popular day trip from Ljubljana. There are a few ways to arrive in Lake Bled including public transport and self-drive from Ljubljana to Lake Bled. Depending on your travel plans for Slovenia, these are your options:
Ljubljana to Lake Bled by Bus
It will take you 1 hour and 20 minutes to travel from Ljubljana to Lake Bled by bus. This is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to arrive in Lake Bled, costing just 7 euros. This is the best option if you are visiting Lake Bled as a day trip from Ljubljana.
Ljubljana to Lake Bled by Train
There are two train stations in Lake Bled: Lesce train station and Jezero Bled train station. Neither of them are extremely central but if you don’t mind a bit of swapping transport, the system works easily enough.
If you arrive to Lesce train station you will need to switch to a bus for the further 4.5 kilometres to reach Lake Bled.
If you arrive at Lesce train station you will be around 3 kilometres from the town of Bled, on the Western side of the lake.
Ljubljana to Lake Bled by Car
Driving from Ljubljana to Lake Bled is very easy and well sign posted. The journey will take approximately 45 minutes without traffic. Kranj and Skofja Loka are beautiful towns to stop in if you’d like to see more of Slovenia and are both located on the way to Lake Bled.
The activities on offer in Lake Bled are plentiful, however the timing of your visit will play a large role in determining what you can do while in Lake Bled.
The best way to start your time in Lake Bled is of course to walk around the lake . To walk the entire lake in a circuit will take between 1-2 hours. You may need extra time to stop and take photos because believe me, this is one photogenic location!
If you would like to get a view of the lake from above, the best viewpoint is from Mala Osojnica . The hike will take around 1 hour to complete, allowing for some time at the top to enjoy the view.
Another great way to experience the lake is to be on it by boat, pletna, paddle board or kayak. In the summer months there is no end to the amount of activities on offer!
Swimming in the lake almost feels like an essential in the warmer months. It was an impressive 30 degrees celsius during my time in Lake Bled and I’m happy to report the lake is beautifully warm!
I first visited Lake Bled back in 2015 during autumn when the weather was much, much colder. This year I returned in the summer time and it is safe to say it was a very different experience. The lake is beautiful to visit any time of year, however if you have your heart set on a certain way of experiencing it, there are better times to visit than others.
Summer (June, July, August) in Bled is hot, sunny and beautiful. This is the best time of year to experience all the lake has to offer as everything will be open during this time and for longer hours. This is the best time to swim in the lake as it is beautiful and warm.
Spring (March, April, May) is arguably the next best time to visit. Some people prefer to visit in this season as there are fewer crowds, however it is still popular during this time.
Winter and Fall (September-February) are much colder but it is still a beautiful time of year to see the lake. Fall is beautiful as the leaves change colour and winter can sometimes mean a light layer of snow and skiing nearby. It is important to note, however, that a great number of restaurants, cafes and activities are closed over the colder months.
There are so hotels, restaurants and tours to choose from in Lake Bled that it can often be a little overwhelming. As someone who has visited in both the off season and busy season, these are my top recommendations for Lake Bled:
Vila Bled is the best located hotel on the lake. It overlooks Bled Island and has direct access to the lake from the stairway at the front of the villa. It is however one of the more expensive options in Lake Bled at around 250 euros per night.
Cafe Belvedere is the cafe that overlooks Bled Island with an incredible (in my opinion the best) view of the lake. You absolutely must try the Bled Cream cake here! It is to die for.
Bled Castle Restaurant is actually a really great option in Bled and has a magnificent view over the lake. Surprisingly, the menu is reasonably priced and offers a great introduction to Slovenian cuisine.
Public & Vegan Kitchen Bled is the best place for vegetarian and vegan food in Bled. It came as a surprise to me to find such great vegan food here in Lake Bled! The vegan burgers are huge and really tasty.
Pr1mo Tours is the best tour company for outdoors adventure sports. They rent out mountain bikes, e-bikes and organise activities like kayaking in the black hole or joining a tour to Triglav national park. If you have your own car I would recommend taking yourself to locations in Triglav, however if you are relying on public transport or travelling solo, joining a tour for the day is always a fun idea.
If you are staying in Lake Bled for more than two days you will eventually tire of lake activities and be looking to venture elsewhere (and even if you don’t, you should!) There is so much to see in the area beyond Lake Bled, a few are the top highlights:
Vintgar Gorge can be reached in just 10 minutes by car. The gorge is a 1.6 kilometre stretch of water and boardwalks that criss cross their way through the gorge. It is a beautiful place to visit and costs 10 euros.
Triglav National Park is full of great day hikes if you’re feeling up for something a little more adventurous. You can self-drive and take your own hike or join a tour like those offered by pr1mo tours (above).
Lake Bohinj is a great alternative to Lake Bled and a much quieter experience. Here you can enjoy al the same lake activities a little further off the beaten path.
Enjoy your visit to Lake Bled!

Picture-perfect.
Lake Bled (or Bled Jezero) is the most famous location in Slovenia. It is kind of picture perfect:
Lake Bled in Slovenia
- It is a at the foot of the Julian Alps with mountains in every direction
- It is big enough but not too big (1.45 km 2 (0.56 sq mi))
- The color of the lake is between blue, green and emerald. It is quite mesmerizing!
- It has its own Castle established right on a precipice above the lake.
- It is easy to reach, very close to the airport of Ljubljana, Slovenia
- It has great nature wonders to admire around such as Vintgar Gorge and Savica Waterfall
Video – Virtual tour
Below is a short video to show you what your exploration of Lake Bled could look like:
Best time to visit Lake Bled
Lake Bled is a beautiful destination all year round. In Winter it would be cold, but the frozen lake and the snow on the mountains is also quite a magical sight!
Lake Bled in Summer
- Pros – warm temperature, possibility to swim in lake, all activities opened
- Cons – many many many tourists, higher prices, Summer thunderstorms
Lake Bled Spring and Autumn
- Pros – temperature are not too bad, colors are intense, and you may have snow on the summits, fewer tourists
- Cons – It can be cold, not everything remains open
Lake Bled in Winter
- Pros – Frozen magical wonderland, far fewer tourists (except for Christmas – new year which attract crowds), it is possible to ski
- Cons – Cold!!!! less activities to enjoy
Lake Bled Weather
Don’t forget that you are in a mountainous region so it can rain in a valley and not in the next one. And in Summer expect thunderstorms at the end of the day!
How long to stay in Bled Slovenia?
You can get an idea of Lake Bled in one day or stay for a whole holiday to explore the region and hike. I personally stayed 2 nights in Bled and 2 nights near Lake Bohinj. I was able to cover a lot. But a couple more days would have been great to better soak up the atmosphere
How to get to Lake Bled
Where is lake bled located distances to lake bled.
Lake Bled is located West of Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital –
- Ljubljana to Bled – 45 min
- Ljubljana airport to Bled – 30 min
- Zagreb (Croatia) to Beld – 2h15
- Graz (Austria) to Bled – 2h45
- Trieste (Italy) to Bled – 1h30
- Venice (Italy) to Bled – 3h
Below is a map to help you get oriented:
Option 1 – Renting a car
If you are staying several days, I strongly recommend renting a car from the airport to be flexible in moving around and discovering the wonders that surround the lake (listed in the following sections). Check out my guide about driving in Slovenia . You get to Bled by motorway E61.
Need to rent a car in Slovenia?
- Compare prices on my favorite platform: Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!
- Choose a car with enough power for the mountain roads
- Consider their full coverage option – it for peace of mind!
- Book early to have a large choice of vehicles!
See all my tips
Option 2 – Airtrail + tours
If you arrive at Ljubljana airport, you can also get a taxi to Lake Bled. It is only a 30min trip. And once there, you can book tours and activities.
Be aware! If you take a taxi from the line at the airport with the meter counter, it can be 2 to 3 times the price you get by booking one.I selected, used and paid for my trip and had great interaction with AirTrail
Option 3 – Ljubljana to Bled by Bus and by public transport
- The Lesce train station has frequent connections with Ljubljana but is 4.5km from Bled.
- By bus – in Summer hourly departure to from Ljubljana bus station (less in Winter) – it goes all the way to Lake Bohinj with several stops along Lake Bled
Option 4 – Day Trips in Summer
Can’t spend several days? Don’t worry! You can already appreciate Bled with just one day. Day trips are available from nearby cities:

- From Trieste – same from Trieste you can enjoy a full day trip to both Ljubljana and Lake Bled – Check out program and Book
Option 5 – Day Trips in Winter
If you don’t mind the cold, Lake Bled is a great destination in Winter. The snow on the mountains make the scenery look like a fairy-tale. Day trip to Bled and Bohinj from Ljubljana, all year round – Check out program and book You can visit it on a day trip from Ljubljana focusing only on Lake Bled with the castle and the island – Check out program and book Or you can enjoy Winter activities – See options

As you will see further down, there are many activities at Lake Bled and beautiful scenery to admire within 1h of the Lake or more. Those can be visited easily by car. Otherwise, excursions and trips are organized from Lake Bled as well. Bled is very close to the motorway and all roads around are in good condition.
- Bled to Vintgar Gorge – 15min

8 Best things to do in Lake Bled, Slovenia
Let’s start with what to do in lake Bled that are right by the shores of the lake or on the lake itself.
#1 – Watch sunrise over Lake Bled
I think one of the best things to do in Bled (and one of the best things to do in Slovenia ) is to get up early to watch the sunrise. The Lake is a very touristy area. it gets crowded and noisy. Sunrise is the best time to see its majesty with the peace and quiet and stunning colors. One of the best places to enjoy it is from the West end of the lake near the campsite or climbing to the Ojstrica viewpoint for the view you have in the picture above. I know that in summer it means waking up at 4am or earlier, but it is worth it!
Plan 1h30 to 2h to enjoy the sunrise or picnic at the viewpoint – enjoy the view, no need to rush!
#2 – Visit the Lake Bled Castle
The Lake Bled Castle is considered to be the oldest in Slovenia, first mentioned in 1011. It is built on a precipice above the lake ( see more photos on my dedicated article ) You can climb up to the castle or take your car (parking for a fee at the top). Once inside you still have to climb slopes and steps. To be quite honest, the castle itself is not fascinating but the views of the lake are absolutely breathtaking!
In Summer it opens early, so after your sunrise, enjoy a hearty breakfast and head to the castle before the crowds. In the morning your will have good lights on the mountains across from it. But if you visit in the evening, you may be able to enjoy the sunset.
#3 – Swim or watch the Pletna boats coming and going
Find a great spot by the shore of the lake and enjoy a swim or just watch the Pletna boats (traditional boats) come and go. It is so relaxing!
#4 – Take a Pletna boat to Bled Island
A classic thing to do in Bled is to take one of those boats to visit the famous little island. It is quite expensive, and a bit of a rush once on the island. And it is full of tourists pushing to ring the bell of the church and have their wish come true. I think the island is not that fascinating, but I really enjoy the boat ride with the amazing color of the water and views of the island and castle.
Tours can be taken from different places around the lake.
Or you can rent a more classic boat and take your time to row around the lake
#5 – Take Heart Corny pictures
Lake Bled is famous for being a romantic place. So, the heart shape at the East end of the lake is quite successful with visitors. So if you like corny, or like in the movie The Holiday you are ‘looking for corny in your life’, this will be one of the tops things to do at Lake Bled 🙂 It is located by the lake, in the town of Bled.
#6 – Walk or bike around Lake Bled
If you feel like walking, you can do it all around the lake or just on a section. I particularly enjoyed the walking trail West of Mlino. You have great views of the island from there, and you are away from the road. 6 km (3.7mi) walk around the lake.
#7 – Get higher with the Straza Lift and slide
On the hill across from the castle, just west of the town of Bled, you can find Straza. You can hike to the top or take the lift and then enjoy tobogganing down in Summer. Views are limited towards the castle because of the angle and the trees. There is an adventure park at the top with ziplining.
#8 – Taste the famous Lake Bled cream cake
What not to miss in Lake Bled Slovenia? Another famous thing to do in lake Bled is to taste its traditional cream cake also known as Kremna Rezina. It dates back to the Height of the Austro-Hungarian empire in the 18th and 19th century. If you love stories about pastry, you can learn more on this article .
Things to do in Bled when it is raining
I don’t have specific places you can visit when it is raining. I just recommend to still go out and explore the region. The atmosphere when it is raining can be quite special and you never know when the rain will stop!
3 Best views of Lake Bled
The best view of Lake Bled would probably be from a hot air balloon going around and above. But here are my 3 best options that are reachable on foot.
#1 – View from Mala Ojstrica
West of the lake, the hike starts not far from the campsite entrance. After 25min of climbing quite a steep slope, you will reach one of the best viewpoints around Lake Bled: Mala Ojstrica. It is really worth doing this small hike near Lake Bled. I think it is the best viewpoint of the Lake. In the morning you can enjoy the sunrise, and in the evening, you would have great light on the mountains and island.
You can also keep hiking above to the Osojnica viewpoint but then the island is way smaller, and the perspective is not as good in my opinion.
Note: All these locations, their GPS coordinates and information to plan your visit can be found in the eBook: The Road Trip Guide – Slovenia
#2 – View from Lake Bled Castle
As I wrote before, one of the main reasons to visit the Lake Bled Castle is for the views of the lake itself. You can really grasp the color of the water and the surrounding mountains. And you have an unobstructed view of the small island and its church. A superb view of Lake Bled!
#3 – View from the campsite beach
And if you don’t want to climb or pay, I believe my number one choice on the shores of the lake would be at the beach near the campsite, West of the lake. From there you have views of both the island and the castle with the mountains in the background.
I don’t drink coffee
But I also like other drinks and sweets! Do you like the free content you find on my blog? All my tips and practical information, without intrusive advertising…
6 Attractions around Lake Bled – Max 45min drive
Want to see more of the beautiful nature around Lake Bled – Don’t worry, there is much to do that is easy to access! Let me show you my top choices of things to do around Lake Bled:
#1 – Vintgar Gorge Walk
Vintgar Gorge is in my top 3 of things to do in Slovenia. I can’t stress enough how you should visit early morning if possible, before the buses arrive so that you can have the views almost all to yourself. It is a stunning walk on a well-maintained path that lasts 1h one way and you have to return by the same way. Note that it is closed in Winter.
Check out my video and many photos of the walk on my article dedicated to Vintgar Gorge
Bled to Vintgar Gorge = 10min drive Plan 2 hours
If you don’t want to drive , from April to September/October, you can book a day trip that will take you to both Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bohinj – Just choose the option of a pick-up from Bled – Check out Program and Book
OTHER OPTION – If you like outdoor activities , you can enjoy an eBike ride (that helps you when going uphill) to and from the gorge on top of the walk – Check out program and book
#2 – Mostnica Gorge Walk
A very different gorge than Vintgar. The walk is wilder and way less crowded. Only a small section is narrow and offers interesting rock formations around crystal clear water. The rest of the walk is a peaceful experience walking in the dense forest. It will be a great option when it is really hot outside.
Bled to Mostnica Gorge walk = 30min drive Plan 3 hours
#3 – Lake Bohinj Tour
Lake Bohinj is the wilder brother of Lake Bled. A lot fewer buildings around this lake. And no castles. I heard many locals say they prefer Lake Bohinj to lake Bled and I can understand why. It does not have the special charm, but it is not full of tourists and with a beautiful circus of mountains at the west end. I have stopped by the lake in many areas and it is always special. The view above is from the bridge near Stara Fuzina, when you first arrive at Lake Bohinj from lake Bled.
Bled to Bohinj lake = 30min drive Plan half a day to a day or several days!
If you don’t have a car, From April to September/October, you can book a day trip that will take you to both Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bohinj – Just choose the option of a pick-up from Bled – Check out Program and Book
#4 – Vogel Cable Car
Towards the other end of lake Bohinj, near Ukanc, you can find the Vogel Cable Car. In Winter it takes you to the Vogel Ski resort to enjoy skiing or snowboarding. In Summer you will find hike departures, or you can just enjoy the ride in the cable car because the views of the Julian Alps, the Triglav Summit and Lake Bohinj are unbelievable! But it is not for those subject to vertigo. The climb is very steep!
Bled to Bohinj Lake = 35min drive 1h30 or more if you want to hike.
#5 – Savica Waterfall Hike
Savica is considered the best waterfall in Slovenia by many locals. It is one of the most visited attractions.
It is not my favorite, but it is definitively worth the climb of the 550 steps!
Located at the western end of Lake Bohinj, up in the mountains, the A-shape waterfall comes out in the middle of the cliff from an underground river and drops in a sparkling emerald color pool.
Bled to Savica waterfall carpark = 40min drive Plan 2h
Check out my video and photos in my article dedicated to Slap Savica .
#6 – Pericnik Waterfall Hike
Another waterfall not too far from Bled (but in the opposite direction) and worth an excursion is Slap Pericnik. A 10min steep hike takes you to his beautiful drop. The great part is that you can walk behind and enjoy views from many angles.
Check out a video and many photos in my article dedicated to the Pericnik falls.
Bled to Pericnik carpark = 35min drive
And many longer hikes
And if you like longer hikes and staying longer, there are many many more especially around lake Bohinj.
6 Day Trips from Lake Bled – Travel Guide
You can also plan ahead, and discover other parts of Slovenia or the countries around. Since Slovenia is quite small, you can really cover a lot.I think a road trip is the best way to explore the country, but you can also see a lot with a base in Bled.Below are examples of day tours you could enjoy from Bled:
#1 – Ljubljana
You can of course spend the day in the capital city. It is only 45min drive away or you can easily take the bus in the morning and return in the evening in Summer.
In Ljubljana you can enjoy the castle, strolling along the river, visiting the cathedral, admiring the dragon and bridges. And you could finish the day having a drink at the top of their building called Skyscraper which offers fantastic views of the castle and the mountains.
Check out my article with the best things to do in Ljubljana.
#2 – Medieval Kranj & Skofja Loka
Between Lake Bled and Ljubljana are 2 towns with charming medieval centers and castles: Kranj and Skofja Loka. I was very impressed by the museum inside the Skofja Loka Castle (that I enjoyed all by myself as nobody else was there).
Check out my article about Skofja Loka .
#3 – Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle
This is, I think, one of the best day trips from Bled you can do. And it should please the whole family: Postojna Cave + Predjama castle The famous Postojna caves are only 1h away from Lake Bled, driving on motorway almost the whole time. There you can take the train for 2km to enter the depth of those amazing caves and tunnels. Then you walk for 1h and come back with the train. Really feels like getting closer to the center of the Earth. Important Note – Book your access ticket in advance to make sure you have a spot at the time you want. After that you can drive 15 more minutes to visit the Predjama Castle that has been built in and around a cave and is one of the best preserved in the world. Check out my article to see photos and get info.
If you don’t want to drive , you can (April to October) take an organized tour from Lake Bled to both Postojna cave and Predjama. Sit back and relax – all is set up for you – To book, Just get to this link , select the date, click on check availability and then select the departure from Bled
#4 – Soca “Emerald” river
Have you heard about the Emerald River? Well, it is the Soca river, and the water really looks like emerald. Set up in a beautiful valley, it varies between wide open areas, where the color is lighter and more transparent and narrow canyons where the color is intense.
It is stunning – and the road allows you to stop in many places to admire it from small bridges.
Plus, the road to the Soca Valley will first take you through the magnificent Jasna Lake and Vrsic pass ( see my photos – closed in Winter)
It is a lot more time on the road, but well worth the trip. (2hours each way if not stopping)
If you don’t want to drive , you can book an organized day tour from Lake Bled. I have found one where you can choose to be picked up in Lake Bled. You won’t stop as much along the river as if you had your own car, but you will still see many views. And they even take you to the hidden Kozjak Waterfall – Check out the program and Book
#5 – Logar Valley
One of my favorite regions in Slovenia is the Logar Valley and the surrounding valleys. Beautiful mountains and charming farms. It is such a peaceful environment! On your way you can stop at the town of Kamnik to enjoy views from the old castle – rooftops & Mountains.
Then head to the Valley, enter Logarska Dolina and then take the small Solcavska Panoramic Road that will take you to a series of traditional farms.
2h drive from Bled to the entrance of Logarska Dolina
Check out my article about the magnificent Logar Valley.
If you don’t want to drive , you book an can organized day trip from Bled – Check out the program and Book
#6 – Venice
You can even head abroad to Austria, Croatia or Italy.
Venice is only 3 hours away!!! – and if you don’t want to drive around the Italians. You can even book a day trip from Bled. Check out program and book
3 Adventurous Lake Bled Activities
Want a little rush? The region of Lake Bled offers some great activities. Well, thanks to the location at the foot of the Triglav National Park, you have access to great rivers and gorges to increase your adrenalin level. Here are 3 possibilities for you to book departing from Bled:
Rafting on the Sava River
Rafting is really a big one in Slovenia – I have seen many boats and offers. The center for those adventures is Bovec in the West of Slovenia, but even from Bled you can enjoy the pleasure of rushing down a river.
Available April to September
Book your rafting adventure
Underground Kayaking *****
That looks sooooo cool!!!!! I have not done it, but I wish I had, combining the pleasure of Kayak with underground exploration, not something you can do everywhere!
Available February to October.
Book Underground Kayaking
My 3rd option for you is to go canyoning. Don’t worry, even if you have never done it, you can enjoy the adventure. Get in your wet suit and follow the guide to explore the canyon with natural slides, jumps and great gliding.
Book Canyoning Adventure
Where to Stay in Lake Bled hotels and apartments
Bled – convenient with all you need.
The easiest place to stay around Lake Bled is in the town of Bled. You have a great choice of accommodations (hotels, apartments, hostels…) and many restaurants. Plus, you are never far from the lake itself.
APARTMENTS I personally stayed at the Bled Apartments. It was a 10 min walk to the lake shore. The apartment was spacious and very clean, with parking. With the kitchen, we could make our own diner and the supermarket was just across the road. See prices and Book
Other options:
- CHARM AND CHARACTER – Old Bled House with a charming country decor, only a couple of minutes from the lake – Check out photos and Book
- LUXURY BY THE LAKE – Grand Hotel Toplice is located right on the lake, difficult to do better in terms of location! – Check out photos and Book
- BALCONIES WITH VIEWS – The Best Western is very close to the lake shore and has many rooms with balconies overlooking the lake – Check out photos and Book
- LUXURY & QUIET – You can also avoid the Bled center and relax at the magnificent Vila Bled right on the lake but away from the crowds, West of Bled. Quite a romantic setting – Check out photos and Book
- LAKE BLED HOSTEL – Back Hostel is not as central as the other options but it has fantastic reviews and hostel prices – Check out photos and Book
- ORIGINAL GLAMPING – further away from the lake but quite an experience! It gets book very fast – Check out photos and Book
- The classic camping is on the other end of Lake Bled
Or check out the best rated accommodations in Bled
Bohinj – nature option
However, if you have your own car and want a quieter area to stay, I recommend staying near Lake Bohinj. Bled is only 30 minutes away so you can enjoy its activities but spend more time in a quiet environment close to nature.

Map Of The Best Things To Do In Lake Bled
To help you navigate to the spots, use this map for your visit to find all the activities I mention in this article:
1. Bike & Walk Around Lake Bled
The main reason why you come to Lake Bled is to enjoy its beauty and surroundings. So the first thing you should do is bike or walk around the Lake. The entire trail is 6 km long and will take about an hour and a half on foot or 40 minutes on a bike .
It’s a scenic road full of stunning views. Don’t forget to take your swimming suit as you’ll pass by several great swimming spots and beaches.
Exploring Lake Bled by foot or on a bike is my favorite activity and the perfect way to start your visit here.
➡ Rent an E-Bike here and ride around Lake Bled (or even further).
2. Explore Bled
Bled is a small town right next to the Lake. It wasn’t the most interesting place for me, but it has everything you need. It’s mainly a town full of hotels, a few supermarkets, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Don’t expect a lot from it. But it’s good for shopping if you like.
3. Visit Bled Castle
Bled Castle elevates the entire scenery of Lake Bled as it’s built on the rock overlooking the entire place. It’s one of my favorite views in Slovenia. This castle was built in 1011 and is the oldest in the country.
It has a chapel from the 16 century , a wine cellar , and a Guttenberg printing press , where you can still print your own souvenir. There is a museum about the first settlements and history of the region, so check it out.
Even if you don’t enter the castle, come here to soak up the breathtaking views of Lake Bled. It’s one of the best spots to take your photos from.
➡ Book this guided tour of Lake Bled with Bled Castle and explore it with a local guide.
4. Ride Traditional Pletna
Pletna is a traditional wooden boat in Slovenia . It’s one of the main attractions here, and you can take it to Bled Island . Pletna was invented in the 12th century by rowers, who developed a special rowing technique back then.
It was passed from generation to generation, and you can still experience a ride on the Pletna nowadays. Go to the Pletna Boat Cruise Spot on the side of the Lake and take one to the beautiful island.
➡ Join this guided tour of Lake Bled and explore it with a local guide ( incl. Pletna ride ).
5. Explore The Bled Island
This island (called Blejski Otok in the local language) is the only natural island in Slovenia. And it’s one of the main reasons this Lake attracts many visitors. Bled Island is located in the middle of the Lake, and the way to reach it is by the traditional Pletna boat .
It hosts a few buildings and a church. Once you arrive, you’ll have to climb 99 steps to reach the church. Locals say that a groom should carry a bride through these steps to make their marriage happy.
The church has a famous bell , and your wishes will come true if you ring it 3 times. I haven’t done it yet, so I’ll have to return and see if it’s true. It worked for me with Trevi Fountain in Rome, so that it might work here on the Bled Island, too.

6. Go Swimming
If you’re visiting Lake Bled in the summertime, it’s the perfect place to cool down and swim. You can walk around the Lake and find your perfect beach and swimming spot for yourself.
Or check out some of these swimming spots:
- Next to the Pletna port
- Velika Zaka
If you want to spend time on the beach and enjoy swimming for a day, go to Velika Zaka .
7. Go Paddle Boarding
If you want extra fun, paddle boarding is another great way to enjoy the Lake. Get one and try to get to the Bled Island or just enjoy a different scenery from the Lake. Test your body balance and enjoy it independently or as part of this group activity.
➡ Get on this paddle boarding tour and enjoy Lake Bled with a group.
8. Go Kayaking
Another great way to explore the Lake is on a kayak. It’s my favorite way to enjoy lakes. Don’t get me wrong, riding Pletna is a must to do here, but it’s very popular and crowded . I always try to avoid tourist crowds. And kayaking on Lake Bled was one of the options to do so. So, if you also don’t like crowds, go kayaking instead.
➡ You can join this organized tour on a transparent kayak and explore the Lake with a local guide.
9. Eat Kremšnita Cake
Any foodies out here? I’ve got a must-do activity for you here: try local Kremšnita Cake. Its origin is in Bled , and you would miss out if you didn’t try it. It’s not just for the foodies; everyone should try it.
I’m not the biggest fan of cakes, but this was super delicious. It has a custard cream with whipped cream in the middle and is covered in pastry layers .
If you want to try the most original one , go to the Park Restaurant and Cafe . It’s where it was invented and offers beautiful views of the Lake.
10. Enjoy Hiking
Lake Bled has two great trailheads that you can follow for breathtaking views: Mala Osojnica and Ojstrica Trailhead .
I recommend starting your walk at the Cafe Belvedere or Starkl Hotel. First, walk the Mala Osojnica trail and follow the signs to the viewpoint. Afterward, return to the Lake and walk along the coast through the Ojstrica trailhead. You’ll end at the Velika Zaka , the best beach spot for swimming.
It’s the perfect way to spend half a day at Lake Bled .
11. Watch Sunset & Sunrise
One of the most memorable things at Lake Bled is watching the sunrise or sunset. The best views are from Straza Hill , close to the tourist center in Bled. Even if you don’t make it for the sunset/sunrise, it’s worth walking up and enjoying the views.
It’ll take you about half an hour to get to the top of Straza Hill.

12. Go Canyoning
Lake Bled is on the edge of Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s most beautiful nature place. Thanks to its location, you can do many outdoor and adventure activities . Canyoning is one of them.
It’s adrenaline and fun; if you’ve never done it, this is your time. You can join this guided tour and enjoy canyoning in the local rivers. They’ll give you equipment and organize everything for you.
➡ Book this canyoning tour with a guide in the Bohinj Valley from Lake Bled.
13. Go Rafting
More than canyoning, I always enjoy rafting. It’s more adventurous, and you don’t have to be afraid; the water is not so rough, and the guides know the best spots, so you’ll be safe.
If you want to try rafting, join this organized excursion that local organize from Bled. All the equipment is included.
➡ Go rafting with a progessional guide from Bled here .
14. Hop On A Zipline
Zipline Dolinka is another great adventure activity you can join from Bled. Local guides will take you to where you can enjoy 4 km of ziplining over the forests and a crystal clear Soča River.
The entire excursion takes 2.5 hours , including a transfer. You’ll pass 7 ziplines and walk in beautiful Slovenian nature.
➡ Book your spot for Zipline Dolinka here .
15. Visit Vintgar Gorge
Vintgar Gorge is the perfect half-day excursion from Lake Bled. It’s 4.5 km away from Bled, and you can reach it by car (10 minutes), on foot (1 hour), or on a bike (30 minutes).
You can walk through the gorge and enjoy the stunning views of the Radovna River. It’s an easy 1.6 km long walk on the wooden trail, suitable for families with kids.
On the way, you’ll also see the stone bridge of the old Bohinj Railway . The end of the walk marks the Šum Waterfall .
➡ Rent a bike here and make a self-guided tour to Vintgar Gorge.
16. Enjoy Lake Bohinj
As I mentioned above, Lake Bled is often full of tourists. So it might not be the perfect place to relax. To disconnect and enjoy more tranquility , visit the nearby Lake Bohinj. I loved it slightly more than Lake Bled, as it’s a hidden gem that only a few people visit.
Lake Bohinj is located 30 km from Bled , and it only takes 30 minutes to get there by car . You can go swimming , paddle boarding , and enjoy some time in nature.
I also recommend you to go hiking to the nearby Vogel Mountain . You can take a cable car to the top and then follow some hiking trails while enjoying breathtaking views of the region.
17. Go Camping
If you have a camper van or want to spend time in nature in your tent close to Lake Bled, go camping. There is a camping resort close to Ojstrica Hill , where you can stay.
The camping offers many activities, such as a picnic at Lake Bled or a wellness stay in a nearby hotel. One of the best things about camping here is waking up in the morning and being able to jump straight to the Lake and go swimming.
➡ Check out the Bled Camping and book your stay with extra activities.
What To Do In Bled When It Rains
You can do many activities in Bled even if it’s raining. Indeed, you can do almost everything if you don’t mind the rain. One of my favorite activities to do when it rains is to go swimming and do outdoor activities such as rafting and canyoning. The rain adds even more adrenaline to these activities, and I’m sure you’ll love it.
Here are my top recommendations for things to do when it rains at Lake Bled:
- Go swimming
- Go canyoning
- Walk around the Lake
- Take Pletna boat
- Visit Bled Island
Things To Do In Lake Bled In Winter
Even though Lake Bled is at its best beauty in the summertime and fall, you can do many activities in winter, too. It’s just that it’s not so picturesque in the wintertime.
Yet, it shouldn’t put you off visiting Lake Bled if winter is the only time you can see it. So, if you happen to be here in winter, here are some of the things you can do:
- Go hiking (Straza Hill, Mala Osojnica Trailhead)

Morning At Lake Bled
In the morning, I recommend exploring Lake Bled first. The best way is to walk around the Lake and enjoy the views. So start in Bled and walk towards the Pletna pier on the left side of the Lake.
While going around the entire Lake, you can stop for several attractions . The first one will be a traditional Pletna ride to Bled Island. So once you reach the Pletna pier, take a Pletna ride to Bled Island . Take some time to enjoy the island, and once you’re ready, come back to the shore.

The scenery in September at Lake Bled is simply breathtaking . The weather is still beautiful, and temperatures are pleasant (around 20°C on average). You can still enjoy all the activities, yet with fewer tourists.
MY EXPERIENCE: I visited Lake Bled at the beginning of October . It was already a bit colder but less crowded, and the scenery was still beautiful. You can also visit Lake Bled with a local bus from Ljubljana called Arriva . It’ll take you to Bled, right at the Lake.
Trains also run to Lake Bled. A train runs between Jesenice and Sežana and stops by Lake Bled and Vintgar. To visit Lake Bled from Ljubljana by train, you must change once in Jesenice . So it’s easier to take a bus or a car.
➡ Rent a car here to drive to Lake Bled. ➡ Book a bus to Lake Bled with Arriva. ➡ Check out train connections to Lake Bled here .
How To Get Around Lake Bled
The best way to get around the Lake is on foot . Hiking and walking gives you extra time to enjoy the beauty of this place and soak in the views. You can walk around the entire Lake within an hour and a half .

The bell’s chime echoes across the island, creating a serene atmosphere that amplifies the sacredness of the place. Step inside the church, adorned with beautiful frescoes and Baroque decorations, and take a moment to soak in the tranquility of this spiritual haven. Whether you believe in the power of the wish or not, the experience is bound to leave you with a sense of peace and serenity that will linger long after you leave the island.

15 awesome reasons to visit lake bled, slovenia.
Lake Bled in Slovenia has badly behaved sheep to thank for its existence. Or so legend tells us.
Once upon a time, young shepherds tended their flock in a fertile valley, in the centre of which was a chapel. These shepherds didn’t care that their sheep were in the habit of wandering off to this chapel to – ahem – do their business.
To prevent further desecration of this holy place, God or fairies – depending on which version of this story takes your fancy – created a lake around the chapel. And so, Lake Bled was created.
Believe this or not, what is beyond doubt is that this picturesque corner of Slovenia has many of the ingredients for a perfect European break. There are lakeside walking trails, a castle perched on a hillside and that island to visit, not to mention a deliciously gooey sweet treat.
It is easily one of the most beautiful places that I have stayed in.
Let’s take a closer look at why you should visit Lake Bled and how to make it happen.

To ring the Wishing Bell on Bled Island (Blejski Otok)
Let’s start by making a wish at the place where Lake Bled’s story began, on its tiny tear-shaped island in the middle of the lake
It’s safe to say that you’ll hear the wishing bell of the island’s 17 th Century Church of the Assumption long before you see it. Wish fulfilment attracts tourists to the church in their droves.
According to local legend, 500 years ago a widow had a church bell made in memory of her late husband. But this didn’t end well. As the bell was being transported across Lake Bled a storm sunk the boat, the bell and all of those on board.
Moved by her story, the Pope consecrated a new bell, the wishing bell that is in the church’s belfry today. Ring this bell and your wish will be granted.
Pity poor the Slovenian groom. To ensure a long and happy life, he has to carry his new bride up all 99 stone steps of the church’s Baroque staircase.
After ringing the bell, climb the bell tower to take in the view and see the mechanical oscillation clock in action.
The easiest – and most fun – way to get to Bled Island is to climb on board one of the lake’s pletna boats. These wooden, hand-propelled gondolas date back to the 12th century, and taking a ride on them is one of the fun things to do in Lake Bled.
To visit Bled Castle
Perched on a cliff overlooking the lake, Bled Castle is straight out of casting central for a medieval fort. Dating back to the 11 th Century, the oldest castle in Slovenia has ramparts, towers, moats and a terrace offering panoramic views of the Karavanke and the Julian Alps.
But the standout for me was the castle’s Gothic chapel, which is richly decorated with illusionist frescoes.
Bled Castle is open year-round. The castle has a restaurant , serving local and regional dishes for lunch and dinner. There is also a coffee shop in the castle’s lower courtyard.
To hike (or cycle) around the shores of Lake Bled
This easy 6 km walk was my favourite thing to do in Lake Bled.
Starting at the Grand Hotel Toplice, walk clockwise and prepare yourself for gorgeous views. You get to admire Bled Castle and The Church of the Assumption from different angles and pass linden, chestnut and willow trees cascading over the water, boat slips and innumerable anglers and swimmers.
The entire circuit will take you no more than an hour or so, longer if you make stops (which I encourage you to do).
For a twirl around the lake on two wheels, rent a bicycle from the cluster of outlets on the eastern shore of the lake.
To ride on a historic steam train
From hopping on board the Jacobite steam train in Scotland to exploring Provence by rail , I am addicted to travelling by train and was delighted that this part of Slovenia is home to a historic steam train.
Close to Lake Bled, the Bohinj Railway is the final section of the line connecting Prague-Jesenice-Gorizia-Trieste. This 110-year-old railway line meanders its way through mountains and forests, across the Solkan Bridge, the largest stone railway bridge in the world, and through Slovenia’s longest railway tunnel (over 6 km in length).
An unbeatable Lake Bled activity for rail enthusiasts.
To indulge your sweet tooth with a slice of Lake Bled Cake
If there’s one food that you must try around the shores of this Slovenian Lake, it’s kremna rezina or cremeschnitte .
Commonly known as Lake Bled cake, this is a light-as-a-feather cake made of puff pastry, custard, lashings of vanilla cream topped with a dusting of icing sugar. As cremeschnitte has been granted ‘protected designation of origin status, it is only available from cafes and restaurants at Lake Bled.
To slurp Slovenian wine
Slovenian wine was a revelation to me.
Learn more and sample seven wines at a two-hour wine tasting in a 100-year-old cellar in Bled. Appetisers included.
To take a dip in Lake Bled
Take a dip in Lake Bled’s turquoise water to cool down during Slovenia’s hot summer months.
To avoid being rammed by a pletna , the lake has a designated swimming area: Castle Bathing Area (Grajsko Kopališče), just below the magnificent castle rock.
The Castle Bathing Area is open from April to September (closed when it is raining). It has sun loungers and beach umbrellas to rent.
To climb the Mala Osojnica
A popular, albeit strenuous, walk is to the viewpoint on Mala Osojnica.
This walk starts at the pretty western side of Lake Bled (follow the sign for the trail). The steep (and sometimes precarious) climb through a forest rewards you with a stunning view of the lake, castle, island and the distant peaks of Karavanke mountains.
It should take you around an hour to get there and back. Sturdy shoes are recommended.
For an e-bike tour of Vintgar Gorge
The lovely Vintgar Gorge, just 4km northwest of Bled, is a spectacular half-day trip from Lake Bled. For a modest fee, you can hire an e-bike to take a self-guided tour of this dramatic gorge.
All equipment, maps and information are provided and you even get a slice of Bled Cake thrown in!

To go canyoning in Triglav National Park
If you’re feeling a wee bit more adventurous, why not try your hand at canyoning in Triglav National Park? No previous experience is needed and the tour operator will provide all the gear.
To raft the Sava River
Another one for adrenaline junkies out there. That said, as the rapids of this river are level 2, this should be a relatively sedate ride.
To go underground kayaking in a former mine
Drive two hours from Bled to an abandoned mine and navigate through its waters with only the illumination of headlights to light your way.
Lake Bled’s setting makes it a photographer’s dream. But for those extra special images, enhance your photographic portfolio by capturing this super scenic destination at sunrise or sunset.
To photograph Lake Bled at sunrise
Although the sunrise over Lake Bled is spectacular, you will need to work for it. The best spot to watch the sun make its ascent over the lake and mountain is from the viewpoint on Mala Osojnica.
To photograph Lake Bled at sunset
Capturing those postcard-perfect images of Lake Bled at sunset requires less effort on your part. Pack a picnic and watch the sun go down from the water’s edge. Better still, order a glass of Slovenian wine and a slice of Lake Bled cake and take it all in from a lakeside terrace.
For a hot-air balloon ride over Lake Bled at sunrise
For a truly bucket-list experience, float over Lake Bled in a hot-air balloon. This doesn’t come cheap – expect to pay around €200 for a one-hour ride – but you are unlikely to forget it.
Planning Your Visit to Lake Bled, Slovenia
When is the best time to visit lake bled.
The warmest months in Lake Bled are June, July and August when the mercury can hit the high 20s. However, these are also the busiest months so expect crowds.
April, May, September and October are cooler but still pleasant and crowds are fewer.
Winter in Lake Bled is from November to February. Weather is unpredictable at any time of year so pack for the worst and hope for the best.
How long should you stay at Lake Bled?
I recommend staying at least two days in Lake Bled. If you’re short on time you could fit in the main things to do in a day – the lakeside walk, the island and the castle – but it will be rushed.
Staying an extra night will allow you to see the sights in a more relaxed way and allow you to visit nearby Lake Bohinj.
Is Lake Bohinj worth visiting?
Lake Bohinj’s beauty equals that of Lake Bled but it attracts fewer visitors and is perhaps less touristy. What it lacks in razzmatazz, it makes up for in natural beauty.
How to get to Lake Bled from Ljubljana
Unless you rent a car, you have three options for travelling between Ljubljana and Lake Bled: bus, train or on an organised tour. I travelled there by bus and back by train.
Ljubljana to Lake Bled by bus
The easiest way of travelling between Lake Bled and Ljubljana is by bus. The journey takes 60 – 75 minutes and buses are frequent.
Ljubljana’s main bus station (Avtobusna Postaja) is located in front of the train station on Trg Osvobodilne. Check the timetable here .
If you are returning to Ljubljana, buses depart from Bled’s bus station at Glavno Postajališče.
Ljubljana to Lake Bled by train
I chose to return from Lake Bled by train as it’s a scenic ride.
It takes around the same time as the bus to make the journey from Lake Bled to Ljubljana, or a mere 40 minutes if you manage to catch a fast train. The downside is that Bled Railway Station is located 4km from the lake, and you’ll need to take a local bus or pricey taxi to complete your journey.
Trains leave Ljubljana’s main station (adjacent to the bus station) frequently. Alight at Lesce-Bled. Check the train times here.
Taking a day tour from Ljubljana to Lake Bled
Due to its proximity to Ljubljana, it’s easy to visit Lake Bled on an organised day trip, albeit a long one.
I highly recommend booking your day tour through Get Your Guide . I have used this platform many times before and it offers an excellent range of itineraries from independent tour providers and a very generous cancellation policy.
For example; this day trip from Ljubljana visits Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge and the medieval town of Skofja Loka and includes lunch.
You can also visit Lake Bled on a day trip from Vienna (13 hours duration), Trieste (7 hours) and Zagreb (11 hours).
Where to stay in Lake Bled
Although Bled is an easy day trip from Ljubljana, resist the urge to cover its main sights in one day, and stay at least one night. This will allow you to enjoy the place when it has emptied of day-trippers.
You can choose to base yourself in the town of Bled, adjacent to the lake, or at the lakeside itself. The town of Bled has the widest range of accommodation options and restaurants
Luxury hotel in Bled : Rikli Balance Hotel
I stayed at this superb 5-star hotel in an excellent location in the centre of town. Its terrace offers panoramic views of the lake and it also has a spa and indoor and outdoor pools. Highly recommended.

Is Slovenia Safe for Solo Travellers?
Safety as a solo traveller is a particular concern of women travelling alone. Slovenia is a relatively safe place in which to travel alone in Europe. Unlike other countries in the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia hasn’t fallen victim to targeted religious or ethnic violence.
Whilst you shouldn’t be complacent, if you use your common sense, watch your belongings, drink alcohol in moderation and share your itinerary with someone back home, your trip to Slovenia should be trouble-free.
This is a small country and has a good travel infrastructure, making it easy to get around. With plenty of outdoor activities on offer, there are ample opportunities to meet other travellers . You’ll be too busy to let travel loneliness bite!
However, like any other European tourist hotspot, beware of petty crime and pickpockets. Unfortunately, taxi scams are ever-present (a driver tried to scam me in Ljubljana). To avoid getting scammed by an unlicensed taxi on arrival at the airport, book a taxi transfer in advance.

b) Ljubljana to Lake Bled by train
There are two train stations in Bled: Lesce train station and Jezero Bled train station.
Lesce train station is located 4.5 km from Lake Bled, so you will need to take a bus after arriving at the train station to get to the lake.
On the other hand, Jezero Bled train station is located on the lake’s western side, so it would be better to get there instead.
Jezero Bled train station is about 3 km from Bled town and 2.5 km from Bled castle.
Daily trains depart from Ljubljana station to Jezero Bled train station and vice versa.
I planned to go back by train from Jezero Bled, but the train never came, and I ended up hitchhiking to Bled bus station instead, so you should check the schedule with the train operator if you’d like to get back to Ljubljana by train.
What are the best things to do in Lake Bled Slovenia?
After arriving at Jezero Bled station, you can follow the beautiful walking path to the lake.

Walk around the lake
Wandering around the lake is one of the best things to do here. Depending on your speed and number of stops, it usually takes around 1 to 2 hours.
You can enjoy the breathtaking reflection of Bled Island with stunning mountains from the background. I think the best word to describe this fantastic lake is magical.

Wandering around the lake, you can see lots of families going picnic and doing different activities.
Swim at Lake Bled in the summer
If you visit lake Bled during summertime, don’t forget to pack a swimsuit with you! Refreshing yourself while swimming in the lake and enjoying the view will bring a delightful experience.

You can rent a kayak, a Pletna boat, or a wooden rowing boat and row it by yourself. It’s lovely to row the boat around the lake and explore the surrounding areas.
It usually takes 10 to 30 minutes to get to Bled island, but it took me longer cause I took lots of pictures and enjoyed the view while on the boat.
After arriving at the island, you can walk the 90 stairs and visit the church of the Assumption. People say that if you ring the bell in the church, it will bring you good luck.
After visiting the Church of Assumption, you should take a walk around the island. Although the island is tiny, it’s nice to wander around and enjoy the scenery from the island.
Visit Bled Castle
The most beautiful view of Lake Bled and its island is from Bled Castle. Perched on a rocky cliff about 135 meters above the lake, Bled Castle is the oldest castle in Slovenia.
In addition to charming architecture, Bled castle is also a great place to learn more about printing works. In the summer, you can meet the Castle lord and join the archery tournament.
Enjoy Bled Cream Cake
After finishing traditional cuisine, don’t forget to treat yourself to the most famous dessert from Lake Bled – Bled cream cake.
Bled cream cake – Kremšnita is a delicacy of Lake Bled. A golden crispy crust made from butter dough, topped with whipped cream, and a crispy layer, then sprinkled with icing sugar, will give you a nice bite.

What to Do in Lake Bled
Besides seeing the actual lake, there are plenty of things to do in Lake Bled. When visiting for the day, whether on a tour or on your own, here are the best things to do at Lake Bled, Slovenia.
Walk Around Lake Bled
If you have the time, one of the best things to do in Lake Bled is to walk around the lake. It’s about 6km or 3.75 miles around the lake and will take about 90 minutes if you don’t stop along the way. But there are plenty of beautiful views and even some places to swim, so pack your bathing suit.
Row Out to the Island
Lake Bled is known for its picturesque island in the middle of lake, and it’s worth going out to see.
You can rent a paddleboat or rowboat and head out to the island by yourself, or take one of the many Pletna boats waiting on the shore. These boats are traditional wooden boats that are rowed out to the island – there are no motorized boats on Lake Bled.
Once at the island, walk up the 99 steps to the church, ring the wishing bell, explore the island and have a gelato before heading back.
Whether you rent a boat and paddle out on your own or take one of the pletna boats, it’s basically the same price, but many of the boats will only accept cash.
We tried to take a boat ride the first time we were in Lake Bled, but I didn’t have any cash on me. The second time we visited, I made sure to have enough cash on me and that time the pletna oarsman took credit cards. It’s all individual, and you can’t choose which boat you take – they just fill the first one, then move to the next, so be sure to bring cash with you.
Visit Bled Castle
Perched dramatically on a sheer cliff overlooking the lake, Bled Castle is the oldest Slovenian castle and well worth a visit when in Bled.
While it’s a popular tourist attraction, it’s still worth a visit, even if you just go for the fantastic views of Lake Bled below.
You can explore inside the castle, taste some wine at the wine cellar, visit the blacksmith shop or the museum, or have dinner at the Bled Castle Restaurant, which serves traditional Slovene cuisine.
But it’s the views of the lake that make it worth a visit! Next to the Ojstrica viewpoint (see below), this is one of the most amazing views of the lake below.
Try Bled Cream Cake
Besides its beautiful lake, stunning island and dramatic castle, Bled is also famous for its cream cake. This popular cake is a vanilla and custard cream cake that’s local to the area.
Originating over half a century ago by a chef at a hotel in Bled, it’s a delicious treat and one that you must try when in the area. (Although it’s called Bled Cream cake, you can also find it in other places throughout Slovenia – we first tried it in nearby Bohinj before we visited Bled, but of course, had to have some again once we arrived in Bled). It was pronounced delicious by my kids, but you’ll have to try it yourself!
Take in the View
The views anywhere in Bled are gorgeous, but for even more stunning views, there are several spots around the lake that you might want to visit.
There are many great viewpoints around the lake, but one of the best is the Ojstrica Viewpoint. It’s a bit of a detour if you’re walking around the lake, but it’s 45 minutes well spent!
To get to the viewpoint, it’s about 20 minutes of hiking one way from the path around the lake; signs will point you in the right direction.
There’s also Mala Osojnica, which is a quicker hike, but still offers some stunning views.
Go For a Swim
The crystal-clear water and lack of motorized boats make Lake Bled an ideal lake to swim in. In fact, it’s one of the most popular lakes to swim in Slovenia.
It’s free to swim anywhere in the lake, although you will have to pay an entrance fee if you want to visit the Grajska Lake Bled beach just below the castle. Here there are swimming pools, waterslides and rafts on the water. It’s a great spot to visit with kids!
If you’re walking around the lake, there are plenty of other areas to take a dip, so be sure to bring your bathing suit.
It’s also possible to swim out to the island, although you need to be mindful of other boat and paddle board traffic. To swim Lake Bled to the island is about 2km, so it’s not for the faint of heart!
Take a Photo with the Heart of Bled
This giant heart is situated along the shore, right in the center of Bled.
Step out on the wooden dock and take a memorable photo with the beautiful lake and the impressive castle in the background.
It’s a fantastic photo app and sure to make a great souvenir of your time in Bled.
Visit Straza Hill
Straza Hill is a small hill only a few minutes walk from the centre of town. In the winter months, it’s a popular place to ski, with small slopes, rentals and a ski school.
If you’re visiting Lake Bled in the summer though, you can still visit Straża. It’s said to have one of the most impressive views of the area (although that’s a hard claim to make), but aside from the views, it’s also known for its fun toboggan run.
Take a chairlift to the top, where you’ll have stunning views of Lake Bled and Bled Castle and then take the toboggan down the hill.
The Lake Bled toboggan is one of the most unique things to do in Bled – I mean, where else can you take a toboggan down a ski hill in the summer? And it’s sure to be a highlight for kids.
Hike Vintgar Gorge
Vintgar Gorge is only a few kilometres from Lake Bled, and is one of the top things to do in Lake Bled.
This stunning gorge has been carved out by the Radovna River over centuries and it’s an impressive sight to see.
There’s a wooden boardwalk and trail that follows the river for 1.6 km (1 mile) through the gorge, crisscrossing over the water at some points or walking alongside steep cliffs at others.
The trail ends at the Šum Waterfall, and from here, you can opt to hike back or arrange a shuttle ride back to town. For more information, read all about Visiting Vintgar Gorge .

Things to Do Around Lake Bled
Visit lake bohinj.
If you have more time to spend in the area, we recommend visiting the nearby Lake Bohinj.
Just as beautiful as Lake Bled but not as touristy, Lake Bohinj was one of our favourite places to visit in Slovenia.
It’s quieter, more laid-back and offers plenty of outdoor opportunities. Lake Bled to
Lake Bohinj is only 30 minutes drive (it’s only one hour from Ljubljana to Lake Bohinj if you’d rather visit there first). Lake Bohinj is often visited as part of a day trip with Lake Bled, but honestly, it deserves more time than that! If you have the opportunity to spend a few hours, or even an extra day or two, here are some ideas of things to do at Lake Bohinj .
Drive Vrisc Pass
Another recommendation around Lake Bled if you want to see more of the Julian Alps, is to drive the Vršic Pass.
A winding mountain road that zigzags to the highest pass in Slovenia, driving the Vrsic Pass is an incredible experience and one that you shouldn’t miss if you have the time in Slovenia.
Tips for Visiting Lake Bled
If you’re driving to Lake Bled yourself, and only staying the day, parking can be a bit of a hassle.
There is a parking lot near the lake, which also has electric vehicle charging, or you can park on one of the streets near the lake. There is plenty of street parking, but it was busy when we were there in June, and I was told that only gets busier in July and August.
We parked a few blocks away near the supermarket (which was convenient to grab something to eat while we were out and about), and it was only a few minutes walk to the lake.
Many places in Bled accept credit or debit, but there are a few places (like some of the pletna boats) that only take cash. There are ATM machines in town, and one quite near the lake, if you find you need cash.
Best Time to Visit
Bled is a popular area year-round, but especially so in the summer months. If you’re taking one of the Lake Bled tours from Ljubljana, you won’t have the choice of what time you visit, so just be prepared for crowds.
But if you’re driving yourself or taking public transportation, the best time to visit Lake Bled is first thing in the morning or later in the evening, when the tourist buses have left.

It is my understanding that I can both buy tickets for the bus at the bus station in Ljubljana or also online and print out the tickets.
I was wondering what may be best to do? I wasn’t sure how busy the route will be on a Monday / Tuesday and whether it’s best to buy ahead, or just buy on the day?
And in Bled , I’ve seen quite a few reviews and posts online about the buses back to Ljubljana being full and people having to wait a while to get on. I was hoping to get anyone’s insight into whether these buses might be quieter on these days and my chances of getting on are better? And again whether it’s better to buy in advance or buy as I get on?
Any insight / experiences would be great! Thank you!

If you know when you're going and can print the tickets yourself then buy in advance if only to avoid the queue. It's hard to say if it's otherwise necessary to buy in advance, late May is pretty busy but not the peak.
For the way back - buying in advance doesn't get you a seat reservation, you only get to avoid having to fiddle with cash in front of the driver. The best thing to do is to combine it with a trip to Bohinj and return from there. The line usually starts in Bohinj so it's unlikely the bus will be full already.

3. Visit Bled Castle. Bled Castle elevates the entire scenery of Lake Bled as it's built on the rock overlooking the entire place. It's one of my favorite views in Slovenia. This castle was built in 1011 and is the oldest in the country.. It has a chapel from the 16 century, a wine cellar, and a Guttenberg printing press, where you can still print your own souvenir.

Standing perilously above Lake Bled is the medieval Bled castle (€11 entry per adult), which at 1000 years old, is the oldest castle in Slovenia. As you can imagine, the views from the castle are spectacular, overlooking the deep blue waters of Lake Bled, the forested shores and valleys, and far in the distance the Triglav Mountains.
The warmest months in Lake Bled are June, July and August when the mercury can hit the high 20s. However, these are also the busiest months so expect crowds. April, May, September and October are cooler but still pleasant and crowds are fewer. Winter in Lake Bled is from November to February.
