Alpine sensation

A shudder runs down the spine of whoever enters the 250 metre long corridor between the Sphinx Hall and Ice Palace. Not only because of the frosty temperatures, but also because of the sacrifices made by the miners to open up the Jungfraujoch to the railway. 30 memorial tablets bear witness to this. The music on the way also gives you goosebumps: It brings back to life the beginnings of the Jungfraubahn, together with the images from the time of the tourism visionaries. Even if visitors are more comfortable today than the miners were – they feel relieved when, at the end of the experience, they can pose in front of the giant snow globe and say: I made it!

Jungfraujoch

On the Top of Europe: A visit to the Jungfraujoch puts a jewel in the crown of any visit to Switzerland.

Description

For more than 100 years, the Jungfrau railway has been making its journey to Europe’s highest-altitude railway station at 3454 metres a.s.l. – right at the heart of the UNESCO heritage site “ Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch ”. All through the year, the cog railway runs steeply up through a tunnel to the Jungfraujoch from Kleine Scheidegg . The tunnel leading up from the station Eigergletscher is seven kilometres in length and was built between 1896 and 1912. One stop within the tunnel offers spectacular views onto the glacier world outside through windows in the Eiger North Face. On the summit, visitors are greeted by a high-Alpine wonder world made of ice, snow and rocks. All of this can be marvelled at from the viewing platforms “ Sphinx ” and “Plateau” on the Aletsch glacier or from the “Ice Palace”.

With the opening of the "Eiger Express" on 5 December 2020, the Jungfrau Railways' V-Bahn project was completed, enabling the journey from Interlaken to the Jungfraujoch in just one and a half hours. From the terminal in Grindelwald, a 3S cableway takes you directly to the station Eigergletscher (Eiger Glacier) in 15 minutes. Once at the top, there is even more time to enjoy the panorama and the adventure world. More about the Eiger Express

Discover Jungfraujoch: The Crown Jewel of the Swiss Alps

Nestled at an elevation of 3,454 meters (11,332 feet), Jungfraujoch stands as a testament to nature’s grandeur, earning its moniker as the “Top of Europe.” As the highlight of our guided day trip from Zurich, this alpine wonderland beckons with a panorama of snow-capped peaks, pristine glaciers, and dramatic mountain landscapes.

Jungfraujoch

Sphinx Observatory: A Gateway to the Sky

Ascend to the Sphinx Observatory, perched on the Jungfraujoch summit. Here, at the highest-altitude observatory in Europe, you’ll be captivated by 360-degree views that stretch across the Swiss Plateau to the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest. Engage with the fascinating exhibits and witness the magic of the cosmos from this unparalleled vantage point.

A Panoramic Overture from Zurich to Jungfraujoch: Unveiling Nature’s Opulence

Embark on a sensory odyssey that transcends geographical boundaries as we traverse from the vibrant cityscape of Zurich to the majestic heights of Jungfraujoch. This is more than a mere voyage; it’s a grand overture where every bend in the tracks and every panoramic vista unfolds as a note in a symphony composed by nature herself.

The journey begins with the rhythmic hum of the train, a melodic prelude to the visual feast awaiting passengers. Rolling hills, emerald meadows, and charming villages set the stage for the crescendo of the Swiss Alps, where snow-capped peaks emerge as towering musicians in this alpine orchestra. The scenery, a kaleidoscope of colors and textures, transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, creating a visual opulence that is uniquely Swiss.

As the train ascends through the sinuous tracks of the Jungfrau Railway, it’s not merely a means of transportation; it’s a dance with elevation, a waltz through the very veins of the mountains. The higher the ascent, the more profound the connection with the surrounding peaks, and the anticipation builds like the rising notes in a symphonic movement.

Arriving at the summit, Jungfraujoch unfolds as nature’s grand amphitheater. The air is thin, crisp, and laden with the purity that only mountain altitudes can offer. A vast panorama stretches before you, a tableau of glaciers, jagged peaks, and an endless sky that beckons you to explore the boundaries of earthly grandeur.

The Sphinx Observatory, perched at the pinnacle, becomes the maestro’s podium, offering unobstructed views of the alpine spectacle. Here, the symphony of the skies plays out in the daylight, as you stand amidst celestial wonders, humbled by the vastness of the cosmos and the beauty of our planet.

Descending into the heart of the glacier, the Ice Palace is a subterranean sonnet—a crystalline ode to the glacial forces that have shaped this landscape over millennia. Stalactites hang like chandeliers, and the intricate ice sculptures narrate a story written in frozen water. It’s an artistic expression of nature’s creative prowess, a harmonious interplay of light and ice.

Sights at the Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch represents the transition between the peaks of the mountains Jungfrau and Mönch. It is located on the border of the two regions Bernese Oberland and Valais . The Jungfraujoch is part of the Unesco World Heritage "Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch".

A ride on the Jungfrau Railway up to the "Top of Europe" is already part of the experiences around the Joch. Viewing platforms on the Sphinx rock next to the observatory and above the Top of Europe train station offer an overview of the region and, in fine weather, beyond. Popular destinations for excursions are the Great Aletsch Glacier, the Ice Palace below it or the ice caves on the edge of the glacier.

Sightseeing attractions include:

  • Sphinx Observatory with viewing platform
  • The Jungfraujoch plateau: the glacier platform
  • The Ice Palace under the Aletsch Glacier
  • Alpine sensation at the Jungfraujoch
  • The Great Aletsch Glacier at the Jungfraujoch
  • Jungfrau Panorama

At the Jungfraujoch, the observatory of the same name stands on a rocky outcrop called Sphinx. It belongs to a foundation of Jungfraubahn Holding AG. In addition to an astronomical dome and a weather observation station, it consists of several laboratories, a workshop and two terraces that are used for scientific projects.

The 76 cm telescope in the dome is no longer used. The observatory handles various projects, including long-term projects. On the Jungfrau East Ridge, at an altitude of 3,700 meters, mainly climate and environmental measurements are carried out. A heated inlet system is installed on the roof. From the Jungfraujoch train station, the trail leads through a 560-meter tunnel through the ice, as well as a funicular that covers a 240-meter difference in altitude.

The weather station is the highest still permanently manned station in the world. The readings of about 25 weather elements are transmitted to the headquarters in Zurich every ten minutes. These facilities cannot be visited inside.

  • The Sphinx viewing platform

The Jungfraujoch viewing platform runs around the observatory. The Sphinx viewing platform is located at 3,571 meters above sea level. It offers a distant view over the Alps, reaching as far as the Vosges and the Black Forest in good visibility conditions. On the other side, a view over the Aletsch glacier is possible.

Since 1996, the observation hall has been glazed and terraces run around the observatory building. A 111-meter lift leads to the observatory, covering this distance in 25 seconds. Above the observation deck run taut steel cables. They form a Faraday cage and thus protect against lightning strikes, which can occur at this height even when the sky is blue.

The observation platform is open daily during the operating hours of the railroad.

Above the Ice Palace, visitors to the Jungfraujoch can access the plateau via direct paths. It is located at 3,451 meters.

There is snow and ice on the glacier platform, which is full of views, all year round. The viewing platform is used for views, photography and as a meeting point for guided treks across the Aletsch Glacier, ski tours and hikes. Events are also held here and in the run-up to Christmas a Christmas tree is erected, which is visited by Samichlous on 06 December and by the Christ Child on Christmas Eve.

From the station the path leads up through the tunnel system. Below the entrance to the Ice Palace, the path goes outside and slightly uphill to the plateau.

  • Jungfraujoch Ice Palace under the Aletsch Glacier

The ICE gateway guides visitors from the Jungfraujoch down to the Ice Palace. In the 1930s, mountain guides created the passages and halls with saws and picks. They are located about twenty meters below the Aletsch Glacier

The labyrinth of winding ice paths with cave-like halls and rooms covers a total of 1,000 square meters. Today, works of art made of ice are exhibited here in niches next to the partially mirror-smooth passages. Eagles, bears, dogs, ibexes or penguins are among the works of art that an artist creates each year. Even "Charlie Chaplin and the kid", a scene from Chaplin's World Museum, has already been created in ice and exhibited here. The temperature of the ice palace must be constantly maintained at a temperature of -3°C. The vault and the ceilings have to be regularly reworked because of the evaporation of the visitors. There are railings in slippery places.

The Ice Palace is open daily from 7:30 am to 4:15 pm.

Just before the entrance to the Ice Palace, a view of the mountain interior is possible. From a bridge, at an altitude of 3,483 meters, it is possible to view a karst cave made visible by the construction of the tunnel.

Below the Jungfraujoch, a 250-meter tunnel depicts the beginnings of the Jungfrau Railway. The tunnel runs between the Ice Palace and the Sphinx Hall. Visitors experience the pioneering era of the railroad and the mountain in the multimedia display of Alpine Sensation, partly on moving walkways.

A film projection room is located in the Sphinx Hall. A 360-degree cinema shows the high alpine world around the Jungfraujoch. The adventure tour is 250 meters long and contains adventure niches at intervals

For example, the brothers Rudolf and Hieronymus Meyer from Aarau stand as Jungfrau first climbers. Two Valais mountain guides can also be seen: Alois Volken and Joseph Bortis. Original black and white photographs are accompanied by sounds of railroad construction. Thirty commemorative plaques tell of the victims of the Italian miners during the railroad development of the Jungfraujoch. The young men were no more than twenty years old. The Alpine Sensation covers 1,200 square meters and is open all year round.

At the Jungfraujoch, the Aletsch Glacier begins to the south and, at twenty-two kilometers long, is the longest glacier in Europe. The ice masses cover an area of about 80 km². Glaciers consist of ice, firn on top and snow at the very top. Firn is older snow that has acquired a higher density through thawing and freezing. About one meter of firn is created from eight meters of new snow.

From the Jungfraujoch, the glacier leads to the Konkordiaplatz, which covers an area of 6 km². At this point four glaciers meet and flow together as the Great Aletsch Glacier further south. The firn depressions come largely from regions around 3,800 meters above sea level from mountains such as Jungfrau, Aletschhorn, Mönch, grosses Fischerhorn, Grünhorn, Kranzberg and Trugberg.

The four glaciers:

  • The Grosse Aletschfirn flows from the west and has a width of 1.5 km and a length of 9 km up to the Konkordiaplatz.
  • The seven-kilometer-long Jungfraufirn flows in from the northwest.
  • The Ewigschneefäld comes from the north and flows in 8 km length and 1.2 km width.
  • The Grüneggfirn joins it from the east.

The Great Aletsch Glacier is 900 meters thick and weighs about 27 billion tons. It moves about 200 meters per year at the Konkordiaplatz. Differing flow velocities within the glacier create stresses that lead to deep cracks.

  • Jungfraujoch Panorama

The Jungfrau Panorama film provides an all-round experience of the mountain world around the Jungfraujoch. Visitors get the feeling of flying through clouds, plunging into masses of snow or even sinking into crevasses of ice. The film is shown on all days as long as the mountain railroads are running.

  • Ride with the Jungfrau Railway

The Joch has been accessible since 1912 via the Jungfraubahn , which has its valley station in Kleine Scheidegg. The Jungfrau Railway is an electric rack railroad. From Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch, the route of the railroad passes through Eiger and Mönch.

Seven kilometers of the total 9.34 kilometers that the railroad overcomes are in a tunnel. In the process, it climbs about 1,400 meters in altitude. Before reaching its terminus, the Jungfrau Railway stops at the Eiger Glacier (2,320 m) and Eismeer (3,158 m) stations. The terminus of the railroad to Jungfraujoch is located inside the Sphinx at 3,454 meters above sea level. Sphinx is the name given to a rocky knoll at the Jungfraujoch where the Sphinx Observatory is located. The trip takes 35 minutes.

Descending railroads stop for five minutes at a time at two observation windows, which were used to remove excavated material when the railroad was built. The railroad still runs on 1125 V three-phase current and therefore has two parallel contact lines. During the descent, the braking energy is fed back into the catenary as electrical energy.

  • Cable car Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal

From Grindelwald Terminal, the Eiger Express cuts the total travel time to Jungfraujoch in half compared to the rack railroad. At the Eiger glacier , you then board the rack railroad.

The Eiger Express is a three-cable circulating railroad with a length of 6483 meters. It overcomes 1391 meters in altitude.

Activities at the Jungfraujoch

Numerous hikes and glacier trekking tours are undertaken in summer in the region with mountain guides. The weather is always unpredictable up here, but summer is better in any case. Some activities can basically be done all year round on the Jungfernjoch glacier.

These include some of the summer hikes if the weather conditions are good. The shelters of the refuges are open to alpinists even in winter. Fuel is available and there are cooking facilities and showers. However, hikes and treks across the glacier should only be undertaken by alpinists or with a mountain guide.

Even though these activities can be done all year round, it is essential to pay attention to the weather conditions at Jungfraujoch.

The excursion destinations at the Top of Europe are also open to visitors all year round.

The activities include first and foremost:

  • Trekking and ski tours across the Aletsch Glacier
  • Glacier hikes to the Konkordia Hut
  • Hiking to the ice caves below the Jungfraujoch
  • Hike from the Jungfraujoch to the Mönchsjoch hut
  • Via ferrata at the Jungfraujoch
  • Helicopter flight to the Jungfraujoch
  • Snow-Funpark at the Jungfraujoch with Tyrolienne
  • Snowkiting at the Jungfraujoch
  • Trekking and ski tours over the Aletsch Glacier

The Aletsch Glacier is used in summer by mountaineering schools and private mountain guides for glacier trekking from the Jungfraujoch. These tours are also suitable for beginners who have a normal physical condition. They are trekking tours that involve five to six hours of marching in thinner air.

Glacier trekking on your own requires a good knowledge of the technical and navigational challenges, as conditions on the glacier can change radically in a very short time

Ski tours on the Aletsch glacier, for example, have the Lötschenlücke as their goal. High-mountain tours to the Eiger, Jungfrau, Mönch or other peaks also start here.

A glacier adventure trail leads on a footpath to a large crevasse. This is crossed over a suspension bridge. The adventure trail is marked as such and is only accessible in summer.

  • Glacier hikes to the Konkordiahütte on the Jungfraujoch

Hikes from the Jungfraujoch across the glacier to the Konkordiahütte start at the Sphinxstollen of the Jungfraujoch. The Konkordiahütte consists of several buildings and belongs to the Swiss Alpine Club SAC.

Tours to the Konkordiahütte are carried out as one-day or multi-day hikes. They continue the following day, for example, to Riederalp or Märjelesee.

The Konkordiahütte stands at 2,850 meters above sea level, more than 150 meters above the Konkordiaplatz. The SAC gives these approaches to the hut:

Hike from Jungfraujoch to Konkordiahütte (4 hrs, 160 hm ascent, 760 hm descent):

From the Jungfraujoch (3,454m) the trail goes via the Sphinxstollen to the Jungfraufirn. Afterwards, a descent over two glacier depressions, one behind the other, leads down to a flatter terrain, where the Jungfraufirn meets the Ewigschneefäld. Then the moraine and the glacier stream are crossed. A gentle climb leads to the S foot of Grünegg and over a second moraine. Clearly visible metal stairs lead up to the hut. In summer, the path quickly becomes slippery due to snow melt. Temporary bridges make the paths passable in summer.

Ski tour from Jungfraujoch to Konkordiahütte (1-1.5 hrs, 150 hm ascent, 740 hm descent):

Via the Sphinxstollen, the trail leads to the Konkordiaplatz via the Jungfraufirn southeastward down, across the wide area to the eastern edge to the ski depot of the hut at the foot of the metal ladders.

Ski tour from Jungfraujoch via Ewigschneefäld to Konkordiahütte (1.5-2 hrs, 310 hm ascent, 900 hm descent):

Via the Sphinxstollen, head northeast along the winter hiking trail to the Oberen Mönchsjoch (3623 m). Via the Ewigschneefäld the descent leads down to the rock spur (point 3135). East of the glacier break (on the left) it goes down through a hollow to the Konkordiaplatz to the ski depot of the hut at the foot of the metal stairs.

The Konkordiahütte has 155 sleeping places and a shelter with 35 places. Overnight stays must be reserved in advance. The hut is closed from mid-September to mid-March. The winter room is located below the main hut in the Hasler hut and offers shelter and protection during the unattended period. A wood stove, beds, blankets, pillows, light as well as emergency provisions are available in the hut.

  • Hike from the Jungfraujoch to the Mönchsjochhütte

From the railroad station on the Jungfraujoch, a trail leads from the tunnel system below the Sphinx directly to the Mönchsjochhütte. It leads from the exit of the Sphinx tunnel directly across the glacier and is accessible from mid-March to mid-October. The trail is well marked and a snow groomer grooms it daily.

This hike is also suitable for children. However, good footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are important for the snow-covered trail. During the hike, the 4000-meter mountains can be viewed in the immediate vicinity.

A hike without a stop takes about two hours including the way back. There is a difference in altitude of 200 meters. The Mönchsjochhütte is located at 3657 meters above sea level and offers a restaurant as well as overnight accommodation for up to 120 people.

Book overnight stays

Overnight stays must be reserved in advance and you should bring your own hut sleeping bag. The highest guarded hut in Switzerland stands southeast of the Mönch. Poles support the hut built directly against the rock.

The hut is closed from mid-October to mid-March. During this time, up to 16 sleeping places can be booked in two rooms, which have a wood stove and crockery. Access to the hut in this period is possible for experienced mountaineers.

  • Hike to the ice caves below the Jungfraujoch

The ice caves are located below the Jungfraujoch on the edge of the glacier. The entrances to the ice caves are accessible. Thus, the deep blue ice caves can also be hiked inside.

As a result of glacier recession, individual hiking trails had to be closed again and again in the past. Slopes started to slide because the pressure on the surrounding rock decreased. For this reason, the full-day hike should only be done with an authorized mountain guide and is also possible for school children.

Guided glacier hikes to the ice caves start in Moosfluh or from Bettmeralp. During the hike the glacier is always in view. For the start from Moosfluh, the approach begins in eastern Riederalp via the Riederalp - Moosfluh cable car. From Bettmeralp guided "Gletschertouren Katzenlöcher" to the ice caves are offered with the following schedule:

  • 1,5 hrs. ascent to the Blausee - Biel
  • 1,0 hrs. descent from the ridge down to the glacier
  • 2,0 hrs. hike on the glacier
  • 1,5 hrs. ascent from the cat holes up to the ridge
  • 0,5 hrs. via Biel down to Bettmeralp

The best time for these hikes is from June to October.

There are challenging via ferratas near the Jungfraujoch. Some sections may only be climbed in the company of a mountain guide. The via ferratas are secured by wire ropes, iron steps or wire ropes.

In addition to a good physical condition, the right equipment for the via ferratas is very important. This includes a climbing helmet, via ferrata set, climbing harness, webbing sling, via ferrata shoes, via ferrata gloves and HMS carabiners.

The German Alpine Association DAV gives ten recommendations for via ferrata.

The two most famous via ferratas in the region are (moderately difficult):

The via ferrata via Ferrata Aletsch includes climbing passages in the upper Massaschlucht. It leads around the Gibidum reservoir. The 80m long and 40m high Nepal Bridge is a particular challenge. Climbing experience is important on the steep rock faces of the Stockflüe, as there are several difficult traverses.

  • 3,4 km length
  • 131 meters of ascent
  • 142 meters of descent

The via ferrata Eggishorn requires in particular a head for heights and surefootedness. A 40-meter-long three-rope bridge and a 30-meter-long suspension bridge are the special features of this A further 30-meter-long tyrolienne (rope slide) may only be used in the company of a mountain guide. However, it can be bypassed.

  • 1,4 km length
  • 145 meters of ascent
  • 145 meters of altitude descent

Eiger North Face (Photo: Jungfrau Railways)

Helicopter flights to the Jungfraujoch start, for example, at the Gsteigwiler heliport near Interlaken or at the Croix de Coeur altiport in Lauterbrunnen. During the flight, there is a direct view of the 4,158-meter-high Jungfrau mountain peak, as well as the Mönch and Eiger.

Disembarkation is either directly on the glacier or at the starting point. Without exit the helicopter flight lasts about twenty minutes, with exit thirty minutes.

Some helicopter flights combine the tour with the Matterhorn. They take about sixty minutes as a sightseeing flight, including glacier landing correspondingly longer.

45-minute sightseeing flights around the Jungfraujoch start from Bern-Belp airport. They lead along the Aare, over Lake Thun, past the north face of the Eiger to the Jungfraujoch. The return flight is along the Schilthorn over the area of Lauterbrunnen back to the starting point.

Flights with a helicopter to or around the Jungfraujoch usually take place with five passengers.

There are a few things to keep in mind:

  • The maximum weight of all passengers
  • Equipment and clothing adapted to the weather
  • Camera and sunglasses
  • Pregnant women after the 20th week, persons with pacemakers, physical and mental restrictions only after consultation with the doctor in charge
  • Spontaneous deviations from the flight route are decided by the pilot.

  • Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch with Tyrolienne

In addition to snow, the Snow Fun Park has another attraction to offer in summer: a zipline. It is called Flying Fox, Tyrolienne or Zipline and is open daily from the end of May to mid-October from 10:30 to 17:00.

Snowkiting at the Jungfraujoch is carried out directly on the glacier. The prerequisites for this are appropriate snow and wind conditions. Trained snowkiters or beginners under professional guidance can snowkite at Schneefäld, for example.

Weather at the Jungfraujoch

Even in summer, the weather changes quickly and should be checked in any case before a visit. Winter clothing is appropriate even in summer, plus headgear and sunscreen.

  • The weather at the Jungfraujoch in extreme climatic conditions

There is snow at the Jungfraujoch even in summer. At the same time, the sun shines in particular strength, as it is reflected by ice and snow. The weather can change very quickly on the Jungfraujoch, on the glacier and surrounding regions. Weather-appropriate clothing therefore means warm clothing (onion style), sun protection, sunglasses, gloves and warm headgear even in summer. On each excursion are also required especially slip and waterproof mountain boots.

  • Unpredictable weather on the glacier

The weather is often unpredictable in the Jungfrau region. The average annual temperature is about -8 degrees Celsius and even in summer only slightly above freezing. Extreme temperatures rarely reached are -37 and +18 degrees Celsius. Heavy icing and snowfall lead to increased avalanche danger. The average wind speed measured per year is about 25 km per hour, towards evening and at night gusts reach up to 60 km/h, mostly the wind blows from south-southeast. There is fog on the Jungfraujoch on about half of the days in the year.

Location and approach to the Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch connects the four-thousand-meter peaks Jungfrau and Mönch. It is located directly on the border between the cantons of Bern and Valais.

On foot, access to the Jungfraujoch from the southern Valais via the Aletsch Glacier is possible as an easy trekking tour, but dangerous due to the danger of crevasses in the Jungfraufirn. An ascent from the Bernese Oberland represents an arduous high altitude tour that is only possible in favorable weather.

To the station of the Jungfrau Railway in Kleine Scheidegg, cogwheel trains of the Wengernalpbahn leave from Grindelwald as well as from Lauterbrunnen .

From Interlaken to Grindelwald (terminal), the drive takes just under half an hour. The approach is via the Grindelwaldstrasse.

Grindelwald Terminal is also reached in half an hour by Berner Oberland Bahn. Trains depart from Interlaken Ost every 30 minutes.

  • Parking in Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen

Two large parking lots are available for visitors arriving by car. One is in Grindelwald Terminal, the other in Lauterbrunnen.

The parking garage in Lauterbrunnen is 2.50 m high inside and open throughout. Tickets can also be booked online. The Parkhaus in Grindelwald Terminal offers 1000 parking spaces and is also booked online. Entry and exit is via a QR code.

12 tips for your first visit to the Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch is nicknamed “The Top of Europe” for good reason.

Its associated Railway Station is indeed the highest in all of Europe, situated over 3400 m above sea level. As a saddle connecting two significant mountains of the Bernese Alps (Jungfrau and Mönch), it enjoys some of the most picturesque views Switzerland has to offer.

Combined with a modern infrastructure and additional sights below its observatory, the summit is the perfect destination for an exciting day trip. Below are our 12 best tips for your first trip to Jungfraujoch.

Eiger Express Station (Photo: Mathias Graf)

  • Stay hydrated

While staying hydrated should be one of your daily priorities anyway, it becomes even more important when in high altitude. Lower oxygen concentration means that you will be breathing more frequently and thus increasing your heart rate.

On top of that, air in high altitudes holds less moisture than on the ground, which can be a contributing factor to dehydration. We have found it is easier to prevent a hydration-related headache than to cure it, so make sure to drink plenty of water.

  • WCs are available in large quantity

If you are worried about where to get rid of all the water you drank, we have good news. There are more than enough toilets. When nature calls, you'll be well taken care of on the way to and on the Jungfraujoch.

Toilets are everywhere, except in the trains. Since the route is partly very steep, the installation of a toilet in the train would not be without problems. But all stations, terminals, restaurants and even the middle station at the Eismeer offer enough possibilities for a short stopover.

  • Wear sun protection

The sun is very strong in high altitudes and can leave you with an unexpectedly red face. So make sure you come prepared with sunscreen and sunglasses.

Besides potentially complementing your chic mountain outfit, sunglasses are an essential part of any trip to the snow. The (over)exposure of UV rays reflecting from the white surface of the snow can result in a temporarily burned cornea.

Trust us when we say that looking into the snow while the sun is shining isn’t fun. So make sure you bring the strongest pair of sunglasses you can find. Your retina will thank you.

Sun protection is a must on the Jungfraujoch

  • Put on warm clothes

Don't let the temperatures in Interlaken and the surrounding area fool you. Even if you decide to visit the Jungfraujoch in spring or later. After all, you are on a mountain top surrounded by snow and glaciers. So the temperatures can drop below zero all year round.

Also, be sure to wear sturdy shoes with a good sole. Especially if you decide to hike to the Mönchsjochhütte. Good footwear will not only keep you warm, but also prevent you from slipping on the icy ground.

  • Hike to the Mönchsjoch hut

From March to October you have the possibility to hike the beautiful trail from Jungfraujoch to Mönchsjochhütte. We recommend you take this hike to experience the snow and glaciers up close. However, make sure you don't leave the trail. You are surrounded by glaciers all the time, which can be potentially dangerous if you step on unsecured ice.

The hike from Jungfraujoch to Mönchsjochhütte takes about an hour - including breaks. If you're planning this tour, the other tips in this article will also help you. They are also helpful for the ascent to this higher hut.

On this great hike is just the right time to unpack your camera or cell phone and take pictures. The vast mountain landscape between the two mountains is the perfect backdrop for stunning photos.

If you want to grab a bite to eat at the Mönchsjochhütte, be sure to check the opening hours. Lunch is not served until 11:30 am. But you can also stop in before and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. At the hut you can pay with cash, credit card or Twint.

  • Take time for other activities

There is plenty to see and do once you are at the Sphinx Observatory. So factor in enough time to experience all Jungfraujoch has to offer.

The publicly accessible viewpoint on top of the observatory provides you with stunning 360 degree views of the mountains and its surrounding towns. Need a break? Enjoy one of the typical Swiss meals in the restaurant, while being surrounded by the lush views.

Still got some energy left in the tank? Head down to learn more about the history of the Jungfraujoch and how it was built or visit the Eispalast, a cave-like structure made entirely out of ice. The latter features ice sculptures made by various artists.

We recommend at least 4 hours if you plan on hiking to Mönchsjoch Hut and having lunch at Jungfraujoch. If it's a busy day, try and make it even more to ensure you’re not in a rush.

Jungfraujoch World of Experience

  • Bring your best camera

As you might have guessed, the trip to the Jungfraujoch is made for capturing beautiful memories with your phone or camera. The vegetation and surroundings vary greatly between Interlaken and the top of the mountain. So you have more than enough opportunities for breathtaking shots.

If you take the cable car on the way back to Grindelwald , we recommend you to sit in the direction of travel. Here you will be rewarded with a fantastic view of the valley.

  • Take advantage of the stopovers

On the way to and from Jungfraujoch you will change trains several times. This moment is every time a fantastic opportunity to take more beautiful photos.

We especially liked the Kleine Scheidegg , the Eiger Glacier and the Sea of Ice. The latter is a short stopover between Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch, where you have the opportunity to get off the train for a few minutes.

Don't miss this stop and experience the glacier up close through the large panoramic windows. The Jungfrau Railways staff will make sure that no one gets left behind during this short stop.

  • Pick the right food to bring up

The difference in air pressure can also affect other parts of your trip besides your ability to breathe. As such, we don’t recommend bringing any liquid, sealed food items like yogurts with you. Higher air pressure might result in an unwanted explosion in your bag, potentially ruining the adventure before it has even begun.

We’ve seen it all…

  • Bring variety into your trip

From Interlaken you have two options to get to the Jungfraujoch. One route is via Grindelwald, the other via Lauterbrunnen . To enjoy all the views this spectacular journey has to offer, we recommend going up one way and down the other.

If you travel via Grindelwald, you'll see the mighty Eiger North Face up close. Via Lauterbrunnen, on the other hand, you will pass by Wengen and can see the world famous downhill of the Lauberhorn ski race.

Eiger Express (Photo: Dennis Josek)

  • Get on the right train from Interlaken

The train from Interlaken is split in Zweilütschinen. One half goes to Lauterbrunnen, while the other goes to Grindelwald. If you accidentally end up on the wrong part of the train, you will have a short time to change trains in Zweilütschinen.

However, to save yourself the additional stress, it is best to check in Interlaken that you are on the right train. If in doubt, ask the train staff at the station. They will be happy to confirm where you need to board.

  • Reserve your seat

This is probably the most important tip of all during high season. It gets ridiculously busy at times. You’d hate to waste your precious time waiting in line instead of enjoying the view at the Top of Europe. So make sure you have your seat reservation ready and feel like a royal while you pass all the people queuing up in hope of a free seat.

Jungfraujoch: A Visitor’s Guide To Top of Europe

Jungfraujoch

A visit to the Jungfraujoch is one of the most impressive experiences you can have in Switzerland. Travel to the highest railway and post office in Europe, and admire the views that stretch all the way to France and Germany on a clear day.

But, Jungfraujoch is a tricky mountain to reach, and it’s not quite as simple as just showing up at the train station and buying tickets on the spot. A lot of planning is required to make the trip as memorable as possible and to avoid wasting any money on a view obstructed by fog. So, here’s everything you need to know about visiting Jungfraujoch!

Table of Contents

General Information

What is jungfraujoch “top of europe”.

Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch Top of Europe is the highest railway station in Europe. The visitor’s complex includes lots of fun things to see and do, most of which are included in the price of the train ticket for the Jungfraujochbahn.

Jungfraujoch is also the highest post office in Europe and it even has its own post code. Bring some postcards to send to friends and family, so you can mail from the highest post office on the entire continent – how cool is that?

History of Jungfraujoch

The first ascent on the Jungfraujoch saddle happened in the 1860s, and only 30 years later Adolf Guyer-Zeller had the brilliant idea to construct a railway tunnel to the Sphinx Peak. He is considered the founder of the Jungfraujoch Railway, which has officially been in operation since 1912.

The construction of the railway was a long, tedious, and deadly process, plagued by numerous issues. The worst of all was when 30 tonnes of dynamite accidentally exploded. Several workers lost their lives during the construction process, and even the founder died long before the railway was officially opened.

Jungfraujochbahn still holds the title of Europe’s highest railway and is considered a great technical achievement.

Where Is Jungfraujoch located?

Jungfraujoch is located in the Bernese Alps, south of Interlaken. Wengen, Grindelwald, Murren, and Lauterbrunnen are the closest villages to the mountain. The closest city (by definition) is Lucerne, but the closest town with the most train connections to other destinations in Switzerland is Interlaken.

How to Get to Jungfraujoch

Interlaken to Jungfraujoch

The closest town to Jungfraujoch is Interlaken, so this guide will cover all the different options you have if you’re traveling from that municipality. In case you’re coming from a different Swiss city, try to get a direct train to Interlaken.

Interlaken – Grindelwald – Jungfraujoch

Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch

The fastest route from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch is via Grindelwald. The journey takes an hour and a half total, and it includes a train from Interlaken to Grindelwald, a ride on the new Eiger Express Gondola from Grindelwald, and then finally the train from Eiger Glacier to Jungfraujoch. This is also the most expensive way to travel up the mountain, and it’s up to you to consider whether you value time or money more.

There’s also a cheaper way of traveling via Grindelwald that takes about two hours in total. First, you take a train from Interlaken to Grindelwald, then you switch to a train that climbs across the north face of the Eiger, offering wonderful panoramic views during the entire ride. This train will take you to Kleine Scheidegg , where you can board a different train that will take you to Jungfraujoch, with one stop at Eigergletcher.

Interlaken – Lauterbrunnen – Jungfraujoch

Lauterbrunne to Jungfraujoch

The third way of traveling to Jungfraujoch from Interlaken is via Lauterbrunnen. This journey also takes around 2 hours but includes several train changes and is therefore the least efficient.

First, take a train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen (30 minutes), then get on the train that takes you all the way to Kleine Scheidegg (50 minutes), then you must take another train to take you from Kleine Scheidegg to Eigergletscher (11 minutes), and there you can finally board the train that will take you to Jungfraujoch.

It’s worth noting that the trains running from Interlaken split eventually, so the cars in the back head to Grindelwald but the rest of the train goes to Lauterbrunnen. So, make sure to check the screens in the train cars you board, to ensure you’re in the right place. If not, you have a couple of minutes at each station to move to a different train car, so don’t worry about it too much.

Eigergletscher – Jungfraujoch

The final leg from Eiger Glacier to Jungfraujoch is always the same, regardless of the journey that preceded it. You ride a train from Eiger Glacier, through tunnels in Eiger and Monch, until you finally arrive at Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in Europe. This journey takes 26 minutes on the way up, but 24 minutes on the way down.

Jungfraujoch Tickets & Prices

The Eiger Express Gondola from Grindelwald to Eigergletscher

The cost of a trip to Jungfraujoch varies a lot depending on your travel route, but it can often be more than 200 CHF. It’s not at all cheap to travel on the highest railway in Europe, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is without a doubt worth every penny.

Here’s a more detailed overview of individual (second class) one-way tickets for every leg of the journey from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch:

  • Interlaken to Grindelwald – 10.40 CHF
  • Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen – 7.60 CHF
  • Grindelwald to Eigergletscher (Eiger Express Gondola) 32 CHF
  • Kleine Scheidegg to Eigergletscher – 5 CHF
  • Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg – 35.80 CHF
  • Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch – 50 CHF

Return tickets are just double the price of one-way tickets. The train from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg operates only in the summer season. It’s usually closed from mid-October to mid-May, but the exact dates vary depending on the weather conditions. When the train stops running, the Eiger Express gondola is the only of traveling up to Eigergletscher.

You can purchase the tickets individually, or you can buy combined tickets at the Jungfraujoch ticket shop. The cost will be the same no matter which option you choose. None of these ticket prices include a seat reservation on the Jungfraujoch train. It’s 10 CHF per person and it is not necessary, but recommended if you’re traveling on a clear day in the peak season.

If you want to stay in the area for more than one afternoon, you will need to Jungfrau Travel Pass (former Top of Europe Pass ). It’s 190-310 CHF for 3-8 days.

Additionally, keep in mind that you can get up to 50% off on the ticket price with various train passes for Switzerland. The GA Travelcard offers the best discount for Jungfraujochbahn tickets, but the Eurail pass, Interrail pass, Swiss Travel Pass, and the Half-fare card will also allow you to get your tickets cheaper.

Trains from Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch run every 30 minutes . In the summer season, the first train departs at 7:45 AM, but in the winter season, they run from 8:15 AM. The last train from Jungfraujoch to Eigerglestcher is at 4:47 PM in the winter but at 5:47 PM in the summer.

The Eiger Express Gondola runs from 8 AM until 5 PM. There’s no specific timetable for the gondola lift because it runs continuously .

The trains from Kleine Scheidegg to Eigergletscher run every 30 minutes , from 8:27 AM until 3:57 PM.

Best Time to Visit Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch, Top-of-Europe

Summer is the best time to visit Jungfraujoch because of the weather. It won’t be warm atop the mountain but it won’t be freezing cold either. Also, summer is the best period because the weather is mostly sunny, which means clear skies and views that stretch all the way to Germany from the Top of Europe.

Clear days are possible any time of the year, but it’s always best to check the weather forecast a couple of days before your trip. Try to reschedule the trip if clouds or fog are forecasted because you’ll end up spending a lot of money to see absolutely nothing. Also, keep in mind that the tickets are non-refundable, so don’t buy them until you’re absolutely sure about the weather and your schedule.

Jungfraujoch is open year-round so you can visit whenever you want. The overall best experience is in the summer months, although this is the most popular period for the visit and there will be crowds.

Things to See & Do

When you arrive at Jungfraujoch, you will see a self-guided itinerary that shows the best order for exploring the attractions at Top of Europe. Follow the itinerary to make the most of your visit, and see all the attractions in the best order.

Sphinx Observation Deck

The Sphinx Observatory with the observation deck

The Sphinx observation deck is a panoramic platform that offers stunning views of the Swiss Alps. From here you can see to the north all the way to France on a good day, and towards the south, the beginnings of the Aletsch Glacier , the longest in Europe.

A super-fast lift takes you to the observation deck. The lift climbs approximately 100 meters in just 27 seconds, taking you to the second-highest observation deck in Switzerland. It’s worth noting that the observation deck is the only part of the Sphinx Observatory that is open to the public. Other areas of the observatory can be accessed only by the scientists who work there.

Ice Palace

The Ice Palace is one of many fabulous attractions at the Top of Europe. It’s almost like a cave in which every surface is lined with ice, and where the temperature is always -2 degrees Celsius. The highlights of a visit to the Ice Palace are the amazing ice sculptures, and you can see everything from a piano made from ice to an ice penguin.

If you’re going to visit the Ice Palace (and you should because it’s awesome and included in the price of train tickets), be sure to bring a warm winter jacket with you. It’s very cold in the palace, and I would probably bring a balaclava as well, to avoid looking like Rudolph in all my selfies.

Lindt Chocolate Heaven

Lindt Pralines

Lindt Chocolate Heaven is the highest Lindt chocolate shop in the entire world. In addition to countless chocolates, the shop also has exhibits on the chocolate-making process, and you can even observe a master chocolatier at work.

It’s a wonderful place to visit, and even if you don’t buy anything you’ll get something out of the experience. And if you’re in the mood for something sweet after the long tour of Top of Europe, the Lindt shop has the best chocolates!

Jungfrau Panorama

Jungfrau Panorama is an immersive experience with a video exhibit on Jungfraujoch in all weather conditions. The panorama is in a room that is lined with screens on all sides, so no matter which way you turn, there’s a video of Jungfraujoch playing before your eyes.

It’s a great exhibit and the first stop you should visit on your tour of the Top of Europe. The Jungfrau Panorama is like a perfect introduction to this majestic mountain, and a great way to start the tour.

Alpine Sensation

Alpine Sensation is a corridor that connects the Sphinx Hall and the Ice Palace. The corridor pays tribute to the founder of the Jungfraujoch Railway, as well as all the miners who lost their lives during the mining of the tunnels through the mountains.

The walk through the corridor is quite chilly – both literally and figuratively. The music is eerie, the lighting is dim, it’s obviously cold inside, and the entire atmosphere just evokes goosebumps. Throughout the corridor, you’ll see other little memorabilia of the Jungfraujoch Railway, and a huge snow glove awaits at the end.

Snow Fun Park

Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch

The Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch is awesome because it’s open from mid-May to mid-October. There’s snow on Jungfraujoch every day of the year, so even if you come here in July, you can have some fun in the snow while you’re there.

Just keep in mind that the snow park activities are not included in the price of train tickets to Jungfraujoch. The zipline is 20 CHF, sledding and tubing are 20 CHF, and skiing and snowboarding are 35 CHF. These are the prices for adults and access for children is 25% cheaper.

Hike to the Mönchsjoch hut

Mönchsjoch hut is the highest manned hut for hikers in Switzerland. It’s open from March to October, and it’s the ideal place to stay for anyone who wants to attempt an ascent on the Monch. The hut offers lodging to hikers, and it also features a restaurant that anyone is welcome to visit.

The hiker’s hut is only 35 minutes away from Top of Europe, so you can easily hike to it during your visit to Jungfraujoch. If you plan to hike to the hut, bring some hiking poles with you. They’ll be very helpful because the path to the hut is across a glacier, and even the best hiking boots offer very little traction on the snow.

Eismeer (Sea of Ice)

jungfraujoch top of europe tour

The train from Eigergletscheer to Jungfraujoch will make a quick stop at Eismeer (Sea of Ice) . You’ll have about 5 minutes to get out and head to the observation deck at an elevation of 3160 meters above sea level.

There, you will see the glaciers below, which is a mesmerizing sight. You’ll also start to notice the difference in temperature – if you thought it was chilly at Eigergletscher, you’re in for a nasty surprise once you finally get to the top station of Jungfraujochbahn!

Where to Eat

Restaurant Crystal

There are three restaurants at Jungfraujoch, plus you can get something to eat at Mönchsjoch hut. Aletsch and Bollywood are self-service restaurants at Jungfraujoch with prices that are standard for Swiss restaurants. Bollywood is an Indian restaurant and Aletsh has mostly Swiss dishes and staples like french fries and fried chicken.

Crystal is the a la carte restaurant at Jungfraujoch, so the most expensive locale out of the bunch. But it’s also the only place where you can have fondue and rosti.

There’s also the Lindt chocolate shop, where you can get something sweet for dessert.

Where to Stay Near The Jungfraujoch

Grindelwald, Switzerland

The closest place to stay near the Jungfraujoch is Mönchsjochhütte , a hiker’s hut on the glacier. But this is really only for people who are planning to climb Monch and not for regular travelers.

It’s best to stay at Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, or Interlaken. All three destinations offer easy access to Top of Europe, so you will be able to visit the place and be back at your accommodation on the same day.

Grindelwald is the closest village to Jungfraujoch, and generally the best place to stay. It’s a resort village with a lot of hotels, which range from affordable hostels to luxury, five-star hotels. Mountain Hostel , Central Hotel Wolter , Eiger Mountain & Soul Resort , Hotel Belvedere , Sunstar Hotel Grindelwald , and Hotel Spinne are some of the most popular hotels in the area.

Lauterbrunnen is much smaller and has fewer (and cheaper) accommodation options. The Valley Hostel , Hotel Oberland , Hotel Staubbach , and Hotel Silberhorn are the most popular accommodation options.

Interlaken is the largest town in the area, with accommodation options in every price range. Hostel Alplodge Interlaken offers beds for about 80 CHF per night, while a night at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa will cost you more than 900 CHF. There are several dozen options in between.

What to Pack

It’s very cold at Jungfraujoch so you’ll want to bring a warm winter jacket and waterproof boots . Wear layers so you can easily adjust to the external temperature; while it might be very chilly on the observation deck and in the Ice Palace, it’s much warmer inside and you can actually strip down to a T-shirt at the restaurant.

Also, pack more pairs of socks than you think you need, and bring at least a couple of extra pairs to your trip to Top of Europe. It’s better to have an extra pair and not need it than to get your socks wet in the snow and not have a new pair.

Finally, bring sunscreen. The sun is no joke at 3,500 meters above sea level, especially since most of the outdoor activities are on exposed terrain. Your skin can easily get burnt without SPF, and that’s one souvenir you shouldn’t bring home.

Time Needed to Spend at Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch

One day is enough if you just want to visit the Top of Europe. You can tour all the important places up there in the afternoon, and you can even manage to hike across a glacier to Mönchsjoch hut and back to Jungfraujoch.

If you want to explore the area further or even attempt to climb Monch, you will need at least 2-3 days, and you could just as easily stay a week or two in the Bernese Oberland and you wouldn’t be bored.

Practical Tips for Visiting Jungfraujoch

Don’t go on the weekend . Weekends are the busiest on Jungfraujoch, and you’ll have better luck avoiding the crowds if you go on a workday.

Wear layers . The temperature varies a lot at the Top of Europe – it’s warm in the visitor’s center but it’s cold outside, and it can be freezing if it’s windy. It’s best to wear multiple layers so you can easily regulate your temperature.

Buy tickets in advance . Check the weather forecast and get tickets for the sunniest day of the week. On a nice, clear day, the tickets sell out super fast so it’s better to buy them earlier.

Tickets are not refundable. Plan the trip a couple of days in advance and be 100% sure of your plans because you won’t get your money back if you don’t go.

Bring a hat, gloves, a scarf, and extra pairs of socks. There are luggage lockers at Jungfraujoch and you can leave everything there if you don’t want to walk around with a full backpack.

Wear sunscreen . That’s the entire tip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is jungfaujoch so famous.

Jungfraujoch is famous because it’s the highest railway station (and post office) in Europe. It might not be Switzerland’s tallest mountain, but it’s the highest one that anyone can access without being an expert Alpinist.

Why is Jungfraujoch so expensive?

Jungfraujoch is so expensive mostly because it costs a lot of money to keep the railway running. It’s the highest railway in Europe and servicing it is far from cheap, plus the exclusivity of such an attraction allows for the high cost of the tickets.

Is it worth going up to Jungfraujoch?

Yes, going up to Jungfraujoch is absolutely worth it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will allow you to explore a unique destination, and it’s unlike anything else in Switzerland, or even Europe.

Is there always snow on Jungfraujoch?

Yes, there is always snow on Jungfraujoch. In the warmer months, a lot of snow on the mountain is just the snow from the previous season, which hasn’t had a chance to melt because of the low temperatures.

Top of Europe, Jungfraujoch tour - unforgettable day trip in the Swiss Alps

With so many well-known mountain destinations in Switzerland, it might be difficult to choose where to go in the Swiss Alps. If you have time and money, you shouldn’t limit yourself to just one place.

However, if you visit just one or two places in the Swiss mountains, then I really think that Jungfraujoch Top of Europe should be one of them. It will be the highlight of your trip to Switzerland. Find out!

What is Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe

Jungfraujoch is a unique year-round mountain destination in Switzerland. It’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage site called Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch .

Jungfraujoch also referred to as Top of Europe , is a place where the highest railway station in Europe (3,454 m) is located.

With an elevation of 3,466 m, this is the lowest pass between two four-thousander mountains – Jungfrau and Mönch. It is therefore called the Jungfrau saddle (literal translation of the word Jungfraujoch).

Some people also call Jungfraujoch the Top of the World in Switzerland. And when you stand there, high above the highest peaks of the Swiss Alps, it sure feels like you are at the top of the world!

Jungfraujoch Top of Europe - one of the best places to visit in the Swiss Alps

Jungfraujoch history

It’s hard to imagine that the idea to build a railway to a glacier at over 3,5km (over 11,600 ft) height dates from the 19th century. Even today, it would be a huge challenge!

A Swiss entrepreneur Adolf Guyer- Zeller came up with a crazy idea to build a tunnel and a railway line to the rocky summit of Sphinx (now an observation deck at Jungfraujoch). Construction started in 1896, took 16 years to complete, and due to various reasons stopped a bit lower. The man behind the project died before it was completed…

The Jungfrau railway line is a significant achievement and even now, more than 100 years later, it still holds the title of the highest railway station in Europe.

Jungfraujoch Alpine Sensation experience is not to be missed when visiting Top of Europe in Switzerland

Where is Jungfraujoch, map & how to get there

It takes quite some time to reach Jungfraujoch. It’s a 2.5 hours train journey from Interlaken, 1.5 hours from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, or 1 hour from Wengen.

The only way to get to Jungfraujoch is by train . The last place where you can leave your car is Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, from where you have to take a train to Kleine Scheidegg. You have to switch trains at Kleine Scheidegg, where you hop on the luxury Jungfraujoch Railway train for the last part of the journey.

You can visit Jungfraujoch on your own – just make sure to book a train ticket in advance , especially if visiting in the high season. Alternatively, you can join an organized excursion to Jungfrau from a variety of cities in Switzerland (see below).

Update: The new Eiger Express tri-cable gondola from Grindelwald to the Eiger Glacier station is now the fastest way to get to Jungfraujoch. Once in Eiger, you have to take the train for the last section to Jungfraujoch. This journey takes less time than by train from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg and from there to Jungfraujoch.

This is also one of the cheapest ways to get to Jungfraujoch. You can also opt to take the gondola up and the train back down via Kleine Scheidegg, so you can enjoy different scenery on your way up and down. Keep in mind that the gondola can get closed in case of very strong winds; for that, the train remains the best year-round option.

TIP: If you have a Swiss Travel Pass , you can get a discount on Jungfraujoch tickets. Alternatively, for children from 6 and under 16, you can also get a Junior Travel Card at any major train station in Switzerland – it will save you a fortune when exploring the country.

Good to know: Because groups get big discounts, it might be cheaper to visit Jungfraujoch with a tour than on your own , especially if you are traveling here from one of the bigger cities and are not staying in the area. Here are the most popular options for organized Jungfraujoch tours :

  • Jungfraujoch from Zurich .
  • Jungfraujoch from Lucerne .
  • Jungfraujoch from Interlaken .

For more practical tips for your visit to Jungfraujoch, please check our practical information section at the end of the article.

What to do at Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch is so much more than the highest train station in Europe! In fact, it’s more than any other mountain destination we have visited so far. There is so much to see and do at Jungfraujoch that you can easily make a day trip of it, one of the best day trips in the Swiss Alps!

There is a wide range of activities at Jungfraujoch. Some activities like hiking or skiing and sledding at the Snow Fun park are seasonal (summer only), most others are available the whole year-round. Below is a short overview of everything that you can see and do at Jungfraujoch . Read on!

Things to do at Jungfraujoch:

1. Sphinx Observation Deck & Aletsch Glacier

The Sphinx Observatory is an astronomical observatory at Jungfraujoch, an international research station. Sphinx is one of the highest observatories in the world. It’s not accessible to the public, but you can visit the open viewing deck, called the Sphinx observation deck.

The view over the sea of snow of the Aletsch glacier from the Sphinx observatory is second to none. It is hard to imagine that this 22 km long glacier is almost a kilometer thick. Can you imagine that much ice?!

If you come here on a clear day (or if you find yourself above the clouds), seeing the Aletsch Glacier is one of the best experiences, a must do at Jungfraujoch.

To get to the Sphinx observation deck, you’ll need to take a really fast elevator. It ascends 108m in just 25 seconds.

You wouldn’t believe it, but even at this height, there are some birds living at Jungfraujoch. Yes, even in winter when temperatures of -20°C (-4F) aren’t uncommon, you are likely to run into some birds here. Unbelievable!

2. Ice Palace

If you want to get up close and personal with the glacier, then don’t miss the Ice Palace , probably the most impressive of all Jungfraujoch attractions.

Walking in an ice tunnel under a glacier is something that is always exciting. No matter how many times you’ve done it, it just takes your breath away.

There are all kinds of ice sculptures at the Ice Palace at Jungfraujoch. You never know what you’ll find, because they change exposition quite often. We saw eagles, bears, and the kids also found Scrat from Ice Age stuck inside the ice… They didn’t stop talking about it for days…

3. Alpine Sensation

Alpine Sensation is a 250m-long corridor that connects the Sphinx Hall with the Ice Palace. It’s a tribute to the miners who built the railway and the history of this unique place.

It’s a beautifully done, multimedia-staged trip back in time and a truly touching experience.

Our kids were fascinated by a giant snowball with a miniature world inside of it. They could have watched it for hours…

4. Jungfrau Panorama

Jungfrau Panorama film is a fascinating experience that shows you a 360° panorama of the surrounding area.

So even if you visit Jungfraujoch on a less beautiful day, when mountains are covered in clouds, this unique virtual experience lets you admire the magnificent panorama.

It takes just a few minutes and is included with any Jungfraujoch ticket.

5. Glacier Plateau

Glacier Plateau is an extremely popular photo stop at Jungfraujoch.

Not only do you have guaranteed snow and ice 365 days a year, but it also offers an amazing view over the nearby Jungfrau and Silberhorn mountain peaks.

Even if you visit Jungfraujoch in the summer, you’ll find snow here. So if you want to get outside and walk around on the snow, this is the place to be.

6. Snow Fun Park

Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch is only open outside the ski season (mid-May to mid-October). If you come to Jungfrau in winter, there are plenty of ski slopes and sledding runs in the area. But if you visit this beautiful region in summer, you can experience the snow at the Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch.

Skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and snow tubing are available. More adventurous can also try the Flying Fox. Ziplining above the glacier – how (literally) cool is that?!

Keep in mind that Snow Park requires a separate ticket and – unlike most other experiences at Jungfraujoch – is not included with the railway ticket.

Single tickets are quite expensive, so I recommend getting a day ticket that includes all activities and the hire of the necessary equipment ( more info here ). Make sure to come early and you can spend the whole fun day at Jungfraujoch!

7. Mönchsjochhütte

If you visit Jungfraujoch in summer, in addition to all of the above, you can also hike to Switzerland’s highest serviced mountain hut, Mönchsjochhütte (Mönchsjoch Hut).

It is accessible from the Jungfraujoch on a marked footpath through the glacier and takes about 45 minutes one way.

Make sure you wear good hiking boots if you plan to go hiking here. Oh, and make sure to always stay on the marked paths. Wandering onto a glacier without an experienced local guide is very dangerous!

Usually, Mönchsjochhütte is open from +- mid-March to mid-October.

8. Lindt Swiss chocolate experience

You can’t visit any place in Switzerland and not try some Swiss chocolate. Jungfraujoch is no exception.

Lindt Chocolate Heaven is much more than just a chocolate shop. Combining the old-fashioned chocolate-making process with interactive displays, it’s a really fun place to see when visiting Top of Europe.

Don’t forget to treat yourself to some delicious Lindt chocolate – it melts in your mouth!

Lindt chocolate experience is just one of the many things to do at Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe

9. Restaurants and shops

Since you will probably spend the whole day at Jungfraujoch, you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of nice restaurants and shops on top. You can find everything from Swiss chocolate to traditional souvenirs, Swiss knives, and even clothes at one of the Jungfraujoch shops.

There is a self-service restaurant and also an a-la-carte restaurant with amazing glacier views. We had lunch at the Crystal Restaurant and found that the food was actually very reasonably priced for Swiss standards (and the portions were huge).

Dining high above the clouds and with a view like that is an unforgettable experience!

How expensive are Jungfraujoch tickets?

Jungfraujoch tickets are very expensive and prices depend on the season and on the train station from/to where you are traveling. In the high season, a regular ticket from a train station nearby will cost you around 250 CHF (about 260 EUR or 280 USD).

If you want to find out the exact price for your journey, you can check the price brochure here . Alternatively, you can easily see the most up-to-date prices in your own currency and book your tickets here .

This is the most popular ticket . It includes the train from Interlaken all the way to Jungfraujoch. During the booking process, you can choose whether you travel to the top via Lauterbrunnen or via Grindelwald.

Good to know. Kids under 6 and with Junior Travel Card travel free of charge and children under 16 pay half the price. As already mentioned, you also get discounts with the Swiss Pass .

Is Jungfraujoch worth the money?

Just like many people, you are probably also wondering if  it’s worth the money to visit Jungfraujoch? Also because there are so many places to include in your Swiss trip itinerary and limited time to see everything you want… I was asking myself the same thing before we visited.

Visiting Jungfraujoch is expensive, very expensive, but you probably already know that nothing is cheap in Switzerland. Also, all the activities I mentioned above (except for Snow Fun Park) are included in the ticket price . Just try to imagine how much it costs to build and run a place like this…

We have visited many places in Switzerland over the years and to us, Jungfraujoch is one of the most unique places and experiences in the Swiss Alps . So my answer is YES – if you can afford it and have time, Jungfraujoch is absolutely worth the money .

If, however, you still have a long list of places to visit in Switzerland, or have a tighter budget, there are also so many other beautiful destinations to visit that don’t cost half as much. So it really depends on what you compare it to.

If you only have a day in the region and your budget is tight, head to Grindelwald-First instead. Other nice options are Schynige Platte , Mürren. Also Mount Titlis or Mt Pilatus near Lucerne are nice alternatives. All these are much cheaper than Jungfraujoch.

Visiting Jungfrau Top Of Europe in Switzerland

How to visit Jungfraujoch cheaper

Here are some ways to visit Jungfraujoch cheaper:

1. Get a regional pass. If you are staying in the area for a longer time and get the Jungfrau Region Winter Sportpass pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass (only available in summer) for at least 3 days, you can get a ticket to Jungfraujoch at a seriously reduced rate (about 1/3rd of the price). In addition, this pass also gives you a 10% discount at the shops at Jungfraujoch.

We visited Jungfraujoch when we were skiing in Wengen . Because we had a ski pass for the area, we only had to get an extra ticket for the last part of the journey – from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch, which was about 1/3rd the price of the regular ticket.

2. Go in a lower season. It is about 25 CHF cheaper to visit Jungfraujoch in the winter or in the shoulder season compared to summer. The peak season is from June to August.

3. Get a Swiss Pass. If you have the Swiss Pass , you can travel for free to Grindelwald or Wengen and get a 25% discount for the journey from there to Jungfraujoch.

4. Go with a group of friends. If you travel with a group of 10 people, you can get a group discount which is about 30%.

5. Go with a tour. If you book an organized tour to Jungfraujoch from bigger cities, it’s often cheaper than going on your own. This is because they take advantage of group rates.

6. Take a cable car. If you book a ticket by cable car + train rather than by train both ways, it’s sometimes a little bit cheaper that way.

Practical information and tips for visiting Jungfraujoch

  • Jungfraujoch Top of Europe can be visited the whole year round. It’s open 365 days a year .
  • Count one full day for your visit to Jungfraujoch . If you have some time left, you can hop off the train in Wengen and visit this picturesque mountain village. Also Kleine Scheidegg is a beautiful place for a short walk.
  • Leave your car in Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen and take the train from there.
  • Reserve your Jungfraujoch railway tickets in advance . It’s a must if traveling in summer, but also in other seasons, it will save you lots of hassle. You can buy Jungfraujoch tickets here .
  • If you rather travel with a local guide (we had one and learned so much from her), here you can find and book guided day tours to Jungfraujoch .
  • Even in summer, you need warm clothes when visiting Jungfraujoch. Expect to find snow at the top.
  • Don’t stress about the weather – there’s plenty to see and do at Jungfraujoch in any type of weather. Sometimes it can be cloudy in the valley, but once you get there, you’ll find yourself above the clouds. And sometimes you just have to wait 10 minutes and the weather changes.

Where to stay near Jungfraujoch

You can visit Jungfraujoch as a day trip from many major cities in Switzerland, so you don’t absolutely have to stay nearby. However, there is so much more to see and do in this region, that it’s definitely worth planning a few days here.

The closest hotel to Jungfraujoch is   Hotel Bellevue des Alpes  at Kleine Scheidegg. However, it’s located high on the mountain, is very expensive, and there’s not that much that you can do there…

We always stay in Wengen , which is a car-free village with direct train connections to Kleine Scheidegg, from where you take the train to Jungfraujoch. Alternatively, there are lots of accommodations in Grindelwald , just on the other side of the mountains, and also with a direct train connection to Kleine Scheidegg and cable car to Eiger Glacier.

Most international tourists who come to the region for Jungfraujoch and the Grindelwald-First area, stay in Grindelwald. Here are a few hotel recommendations in Grindelwald town center for different budgets:

$$$$$ Bergwelt Grindelwald – Alpine Design Resort $$$$ Eiger Selfness Hotel $$$ Sunstar Hotel & SPA $$ Eiger Lodge Chic

TIP: Using the map below, you can compare hotels, B&Bs, and short-term rental accommodations in Grindelwald . Simply insert your travel dates and group size, and you’ll see what’s available for your stay. Check it out!

Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe, is such a special place that I really think it deserves to be included in any Swiss itinerary. It’s not just the highlight of the Jungfrau Region, but also one of the most unique places you can visit in Switzerland .

As for us, we have been to the Jungfrau Region many times and have just booked another trip for the summer. It’s a place you’ll want to return to as well!

TIP: If you like places like Jungfraujoch, you’ll also love Mount Titlis . It’s another wonderful day-trip destination in central Switzerland.

Jungfraujoch FAQ

Jungfrau is a mountain (4,158 m) whereas Jungfraujoch is Europe’s highest train station (3,454 m). Jungfraujoch means the “Jungfrau saddle”, which is basically the connecting point between the peaks of Mt Jungfrau and Mt Mönch. You can easily visit Jungfraujoch from where you can admire – among others – the view of Jungfrau.

Visiting Jungfraujoch is very expensive and many people wonder if it’s worth going there. Jungfraujoch offers one of the most unique experiences in the Swiss Alps, so yes, if you can afford it, it is absolutely worth a visit. If, however, you are on a tight budget, there are many cheaper destinations like Grindelwald-First, Schynige Platte, or Mount Titlis (to name just a few) that are worth your time just as much.

Jungfraujoch is the highest train station in Europe. Building and maintaining a railway this high in the mountains (where there is always snow) is very costly. Furthermore, there are just that many trains that can drive to Jungfraujoch in a day, which limits the number of visitors. All this makes it a more expensive destination.

Jungfraujoch is a year round destination and it’s open every day.

Jungfraujoch has something unique to offer in all seasons and since many attractions are inside, so you can visit at any time. There is always snow here, but if you visit in summer, you can hike to Mönchshütte or go snow tubing on the glacier. In addition, there are nice hiking possibilities in the area. So there’s more to see and do in Jungfraujoch in summer than in winter.

The Jungfrau Travel Pass is only worth it if you are staying in the Jungfrau Region for at least 3 days and are planning to take trains/ gondolas every day. In that case, it’s absolutely worth it! Not only will it save you money for transportation, but it also gives you complete flexibility – you can easily change your travel plans during the day because all the trains and gondolas in the region are included.

I will be staying in Lauterbrunnen at the end of May. Is it possible to buy a ticket which gives you a choice of how to get up and down the Jungfraujoch i.e Eiger Express/train for the ascent and just the train for the descent to Kleine Scheidegg and then on to Wengen so that I can walk back to Lauterbrunnen?

Is there also a gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald?

Hi, a few things: Lauterbrunnen doesn't have any gondolas to that side of the mountain, only toward Mürren. If you want to go to Jungfraujoch from Lauterbrunnen, you'll have to take a train to Kleine Scheidegg and from there switch to another train to the Top of Europe. If you want to go to Grindelwald from Lauterbrunnen, the fastest way is by train via Zweilütschinen. Otherwise, via Kleine Scheidegg which is more scenic but also a lot more expensive. Eiger Gondola runs from Grindelwald, so if you want to take it either way, you will have to travel via Grindelwald at least one way. Just to be clear - if you just want to visit Jungfraujoch from Lauterbrunnen, the easiest way is to simply take a train via Kleine Scheidegg and forget Grindelwald altogether. Unless you absolutely want to see the scenery there. Or you can simply visit Grindelwald separately, on another day if you are in the area longer. You can find all ticket options on the website of the Jungfrau Region but I can imagine that it can be very overwhelming. If you want to take many different trains in this area in a short time, it's often better to get a (multi-)day pass. If you just want a very specific ticket excluding some parts of the journey, simply ask at the ticket desk, but often, skipping one short part of the journey and doing it on foot will not be cheaper than paying for a round-trip ticket. You can still hike as much as you like though ;). Hope this helps a bit. In reality, it's not as complicated as it looks, but you need to decide which way you travel - the shortest route which is just up and down the same way, or the 'see everything' route which is basically a round trip via Grindelwald, going up to the mountain one way and coming back via the other side. Have a great trip!

Thursday 25th of January 2024

We plan to stay at Grindelwald for three nights. Of course, we want to visit Jungfraujoch. Is the Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass better in price? We'll be there in the end of May.

Monday 29th of January 2024

Hi Julia, which pass or ticket is best for you depends on your travel plans - which trains/gondolas/boats you take, which mountain destinations you visit, etc. So I really can't compare it for you. Keep in mind that the last part of the journey to the top of Jungfraujoch (from Schynige Platte or Eiger gondola) is normally not included in any of the passes, but some passes give you a discount on it.

Sunday 26th of November 2023

Good day Jurga, happy to meet you and thanks for sharing your thoughts here. I and my husband will be arriving in Switzerland in beginning of Dec as per itinerary below, still thinking what category of Swiss Pass (SP) should I purchase. I am not going for skiing but would spend more time at scenic places and enjoy the views.

Day1: Frankfurt (Eurail ticket to Lucerne?) Day2: Lucerne : city sightseeing & Mt Rigi Day3-6: Grindelwald Town (stay here on day 3-6), Jungfraudjoch (1 day), Interlaken, Lauterbrunen, Murren, Wengen ...have more time to explore any more places? Day 6-8: Zermatt Day 9: Glacier Express (reservation seat paid), from Zermatt to Chur Day 10: Black Forest Day 11: Frankfurt

Would like to know which category of SP covers Jungfraudjoch and Glacier Express seat tickets. Appreciate your advice.

Regards Janice

Hi Janice, you may want to read our guide on Swiss Travel Pass for more information on what's included and what's not. In any case, the last leg of the train journey to Jungfraujoch is never included and gondolas/trains to most other mountain peaks (e.g. Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt or Grindelwald-First) are not included either, but you get a discount. Glacier Express is included, but you have to reserve the seats at an extra cost (which you seem to have done). Also, there is no difference in what's included with whatever Swiss Travel Pass you get - the main difference is the travel class and flexibility in terms or travel dates. Once again, please check the article I linked to for more information. Have a great trip!

Tuesday 31st of October 2023

Hi Jurga, i'm so glad i came across your post, very informative and interesting. I will be traveling with family to Switzerland in December 2023, sadly to say we will have a very short stay in the country for this trip. Our itinerary are as follows: Day 1 Arrival Zurich Day 2 Zurich to Grindelwald (overnight at Grindelwald) Day 3 From Grindelwald to Geneva Day 4 Geneva to Milan Our main purpose to Grindelwald is to visit Jungfraujoh and plan to go up Top Of Europe on day 3 before leaving for Geneva. Please advise: 1) Is it worth to buy Swiss Travel Pass ? should the pass be for 3 or 4 days? or a half price pass is a better option? 2) Does the STP covers train from Zurich-->Grindelwald-->Geneva-->Milan?

Friday 3rd of November 2023

Hi Evelyn, please take a look at our guide to Swiss Pass for more information about what's covered or not. Whether it's worth it, it depends on so many factors. With such a short trip it may not always be the case, but if you want to be 100% sure, the only way to check is to calculate the prices of everything you plan to do and then compare. If you have no time for this calculation, just get the pass for 3 days - normally, it should be worth it. And no, Swiss Pass will normally only cover train journeys within Switzerland so not all the way to Milan. Have a great trip!

Thursday 21st of September 2023

Hi! I will be staying near Interlaken ost, I'm wondering if it's possible to go to Grindelwald and enjoy some activities before going up to Jungfrau, or the whole trip up and down to Jungfrau would pretty much take up the whole day and it's best to just go up again to Grindelwald on another day?

Friday 22nd of September 2023

@Jurga, Thank you for taking time to answer. I appreciate your blogs, big help for new and old travellers alike. Keep it up and more power to your page. 😉

Hi Camille, it depends on what you want to do in Grindelwald. If it's just visiting the town and the sights in the valley, then you can easily combine it with Jungfraujoch. If you also want to visit Gridelwald-First, then it will be rushed and you'll need two separate tickets for each mountain peak, but won't be able to make the most of any of them.

Jungfraujoch Top of Europe: A Must-See Swiss Excursion

jungfraujoch top of europe tour

What’s In This Article

Jungfraujoch is a mountaintop destination in the Swiss Alps known for its breathtaking views of mountains and glaciers. It’s been one of our favorite excursions and the best part of our Switzerland family vacation .

About Jungfraujoch

The name Jungfraujocjh means maiden saddle, and Jungfraujoch is a saddle connecting the two 12,000 ft mountain peaks of Jungfrau and Monch in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland.

Jungfraujoch is home to various attractions, including the Ice Palace, the Sphinx Observatory, and the highest post office in Europe.

At 11,300 ft above sea level, Jungfraujoch is also the highest railway station in Europe.

Getting to Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe Day Trip With Kids

We took a summer day trip to Jungfraujoch, the best part of our summer Switzerland trip.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jungfraujoch is accessible by cogwheel train, and the journey itself is a great experience.

Jungfraujoch Tickets

Jungfraujoch train tickets are available in various forms or by purchasing tours. The most convenient way to purchase a train ticket is from the official Swiss Travel website. Before buying tickets, check Jungfraujoch’s weather forecast to ensure you get better views from the observation deck.

The cogwheel train ride begins on the valley floor in Laute r brunnen and winds up the mountain through the town of Wengen , where we stayed for our Oberland visit.

Ticket prices from Lauterbrunnen start at 84 Swiss Franc round trip (about USD 89). Jungfraujoch is one of several railways not included in the Swiss Rail or Oberland unlimited travel passes. However, these passes still provide a discount on the tickets. There is an additional cost for a seat reservation, and it’s recommended during the high season, as the trails can fill up.

If you have a Swiss Pass or Oberland unlimited rail pass, you can use it to purchase tickets at a discounted rate. Cheaper tickets can also be purchased with a Swiss Half Fare Card, which offers a 50% discount on rail travel in Switzerland. For children under 16, there is the Junior Card, which offers free or discounted rail travel throughout Switzerland. Whether you’re a student, a senior citizen, or a family, there are plenty of options for purchasing Jungfraujoch tickets at a discounted rate.

Suppose you’re interested in visiting Jungfraujoch for the day from one of Switzerland’s larger cities. In that case, you can also book tours that include tickets from cities such as Geneva, Zurich, or Lucerne.

Train Journey

The scenery from the train is one of the best parts of this day trip!

Starting from Lauterbrunnen gives you some fantastic views of the Instagram-famous waterfalls of Lauterbrunnen before stopping in the town free car of Wengen.

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe Train

You continue the journey after your first stop at Kleine Scheidegg station, a small village on the way up the mountain. This rail trip offers spectacular views of some of the highest peaks in the Swiss Alps. The last part of the journey is through the long tunnel to Jungfraujoch Station, the highest train station in Europe.

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe T

If you’re starting your journey from Interlaken (or beyond), a separate train connection is needed from Interlaken Ost station to Lauterbrunnen for 3 trains. Train schedules are easy to find with apps like Google Maps, and train time with easy to make connections. The total journey time from Lauterbrunnen is about 90 minutes.

You can also shorten the journey to Jungfraujoch (depending on where you’re staying) by taking the Eiger Express cable car for part of the journey, connecting through Grindelwald Terminal to Eiger Glacier / station Eigergletscher before continuing on the train.

Best Time To Go

Any time of year is a good time to visit Jungfraujoch as there is snow year-round, but our favorite time to visit has been in the summer. Summer gives you a break from the heat, and hotel and vacation rentals are much cheaper than winter’s high season. Take the first train for a better chance at good weather, and you’ll also beat the crowds.

Things To Do

Jungfraujoch is one of the best places to visit with kids in the Bernese Alps. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy the Swiss Alps’ spectacular views and participate in various activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing . It is one of the most popular day trips in the Oberland area.

If you’re looking for a truly breathtaking view, take a trip up to the observation deck. Here on a clear day, you can take in the stunning panoramic views of the Alps that stretch out before you.

A good place to start your day at Jungfraujoch is outside at the open viewing deck. We followed that up with sledding, tobogganing, and exploring the ice palace’s long corridors and then headed inside to warm up and pick up some chocolates at the Lindt Swiss Chocolate store.

View From Observation Deck

Snow Tubing and Tobbogan Rentals

For a fee, you can enjoy snow tubing and tobogganing at Junfraujoch. A moving walkway takes you back to the top of the hill. This was our kid’s favorite part of Jungfraujoch!

Food and Shops

There are several restaurants on Jungfrajoch, with more options at Kleine Scheidegg for lunch on the return trip. Be sure to pick up some chocolate from the Lindt store.

After a day exploring Jungfrajoch at a high elevation, our kids showed signs of high altitude sickness, and we started the scenic route via Jungfrau Railway journey back to Wengen.

On the return train trip, we stopped in Kleine Scheidegg for lunch, where heavy snow was coming down at the start of June. Kleine Scheidegg has several restaurants, including one in the station.

Where to Stay Near Jungfraujoch

If you’re looking for a place to stay near Jungfraujoch in Switzerland, you have many options; here are some of our favorites.

Wengen is where we stayed on our most recent trip. It’s one of the closest places to Jungfraujoch, right on the train line.

A smaller resort town in the mountains, Wengen has fantastic views as it sits above Lauterbrunnen. Wengen is a quiet, car-free village, so it may not be the best choice if you’re looking for excitement. The train from Lauterbrunnen passes through Wengen on the way to Jungfraujoch.

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe Wengen

Interlaken is the closest larger city. However, it is more of a commercial/transportation hub than a mountain village. We recommend staying in one of the following small towns nearby that will give you more of a Swiss mountain village vacation.

Lauterbrunnen

Jungfraujoch Top Of Europe Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is another excellent option for a slightly smaller town in the valley below Wengen. Here, you’ll find more hotels, vacation rentals, and various shops and restaurants. Lauterbrunnen will also give you some great views of the giant Lauterbrunnen waterfalls.

Grindelwald

Grindelwald is another good choice for a scenic town and one of the most popular. Grindelwald is connected to Jungfraujoch by the Eiger Express cable car.

Grindewald

These towns offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains, making them ideal bases for exploring the Jungfrau region. Whether you are looking for a luxurious hotel or a cozy vacation rental, you’ll indeed find the perfect place to stay near Jungfrajoch.

On our most recent trip, we stayed in Wengen. For a friendly resort and our kid’s favorite, check out Swiss Holiday Park Morschach, several hours east of Jungfraujoch.

Jungfrau is one of the best things to see in Switzerland and was the best part of our recent family Switzerland trip.
