Built by the Cholas, this thousand-year-old temple is built in South Indian style architecture and is abode to Goddess Kolaramma. One of the two prominent temples in Kolar, Kolaramma Temple is quite is famous amongst the tourists as well as the locals. Believed to the second-deepest gold mines in the world, the Kolar Gold Fields is located at a distance of 100 km from Bengaluru and invites visitors from all parts of the country. Known for its old-world charm and British-era bungalows, the place is home to the now defunct gold mines, which were once counted among the major gold mines of the country. Some of the prime attractions here include the KGF Club, the Golf Course and numerous beautiful temples. The Kotilingeshwara Temple at Kammasandra is one of the most-visited temples in the state. It houses a huge shivling and a Nandi statue, along with as many as 86 lakh shivlings. Other temples of interest include the Sita Temple, situated on a hilltop in Avani, and the ancient Bangaru Tirupati temple, dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara.

It was, in ancient inscriptions, known as Kuvalala, Kolala and Kolahalapura. Historical evidence says that Kolar was in existence from the 4th Century onwards. The Ganga dynasty originally hailed from this place which was the initial capital. Moreover, Kolar was also part of many other dynasties including Cholas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara. Moreover, it also has mentioned in the Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Geographically, Kolar is surrounded by the Bengaluru Rural in the west, Chikkaballapura in the north, Andhra Pradesh state in the east and Tamil Nadu state in the south. And thanks to its proximity to Bengaluru , Kolar is an excellent weekend getaway with many tourist attractions. Here you have numerous places to visit which include the Kolaramma Temple, built by the Gangas and later renovated by the Cholas, Someshwara Temple built by the Cholas and expanded during the Vijayanagara period, the Koti Lingeshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva which has a staggering collection of over 60 lakh Shiva Lingas. Apart from the temples, the beautiful hillocks overlooking the town of Kolar provide ideal trekking tracks for adventure enthusiasts.

This place is perhaps most synonymous with the yellow metal – gold, but then there is more to Kolar than just the yellow metal. The now-defunct Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) is believed to be the world’s deepest gold mines and one of the oldest as it has a history of mining since the 5th Century. And while you are exploring this city, don’t miss the chance to grab its reputed country blanket ( Kambli ) along the way.

• Antaragange Cave Exploration : Antargange is around 3 km from Kolar towards Kolar Betta, the hills that forms the town's backdrop. The Antargange range of hills is situated in the Shatasringa Parvata (mountain range). Antargange literally means “Ganges from the deep”. Antargange is famous for Sri Kashi Vishweshwara temple. A continuous flow of underground water/ spring here gushes out to the feet of Lord Vishnu and flows out through the mouth of Nandi (Lord Shiva's vehicle). It is believed that drinking water from the pond cleanse one from many diseases. You can climb the roughly hewn stone steps nearby that will lead to the peak wherein you can get a stunning view of Kolar.
• Markhandeshwara Dam : A scenic spot 3 kms from Budikote and 30 kms from Kolar. The Dam was built by Sir M Vishveshvaraiah.
• Big Rock Dirt Park : Located in Holali Village, BigRock Dirt Park today is a comprehensive training academy and one of India’s most successful and sought-after off-road training facility. Religious Places

• Kolaramma Temple : The town's presiding deity is Goddess Kolaramma (another name for the eight-armed Goddess Durga). The temple dates back to the Ganga period and there is no shikara on top of this temple. In the 11th Century, the Cholas made several renovations and additions. The temple itself has beautifully carved statues and designs all done using the abundantly available granite stones. This temple is unique in many respects. The deity here is considered so powerful that Her idol is not placed for direct viewing for devotees but placed in a corner of the sanctum sanctorum. A mirror is placed opposite the idol to let the devotees have a glimpse of the Goddess. The temple also is home to Goddess Kapalabhairavi (Chelaniyamma) who is believed to cure scorpion bite. It is believed that praying here, a person will be guarded from scorpion bites.
• Someshvara temple : Located nearby the Kolaramma Temple, is the Someshwara Temple, one of the best examples of pre Vijayanagara Dravidian Style or the Chola period, having very beautiful architectural quality and sculptural elegance. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple entrance has a high Gopura built of brick and mortar and the main temple has a garbhagriha and a large ardhamantapa. The Kalyanamantapa or the Vasantha Mantapa also is a beautiful architectural creation.
• Kotilingeshwara : Situated around 18 km from Kolar in Kammasandra village, the Koti Lingeshwara Temple attracts thousands of devotees. The main attraction is a collection of big and small Shivalingas which number about 60 lakh in total and have been installed by devotees. In another enclosure near the main entrance is a Shivalinga of 108 feet in height which is believed to one of the highest in the world. This statue can be seen while traveling from Bangarpet to KGF. In front of this huge Shivalinga is a Nandi statue of 35 feet in height. Besides, there are other temples consecrated here are dedicated to Manjunatha, Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara and Navagrahas.
• Kashi Vishvanatha Temple : This temple in Antaragange is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has a pond that gets continuous supply of fresh water from the hills, through the mouth of a bull. Antaragange is known as Dakshina Kashi or Kashi of the south.
• Avani: Legend associates Avani with many episodes of the epic Ramayana. Valmiki Parvata, a hill situated here, is said to be the location of Sage Valmiki's ashram. It is believed Goddess Sita lived here after she was banished by Lord Rama. The town has a large temple complex with around 12 shrines associated with Lord Rama like Rameshwara, Lakshamaneshwara, Bharateshwara, Sugriveshwara, etc. They are collectively known as Ramalingeshwara temples.
• Bethamangala : Bethamangala was the source of water supply to Kolar Gold Fields. Bethamangala is also famous for Vijayendraswamy temple
• Budikote : Also referred to as Vibhutipura or town of ashes, Budikote has inscriptions from the 8th century AD. Temples of Someshvara and Venkataramana are major temples in Budikote.
• Chikka Tirupathi : This is a place of pilgrimage situated around 10 km from Sarjapura in Malur taluk. The spectacular temple of Lord Srinivasa here has a spacious courtyard and an enclosure. The Varadaraja idol here, generally called as Srinivasa is very attractive. The navaranga has the images of saint Ramanujacharya and Vedanta Deshikar. Chikka Tirupathi is a religious centre believed to be as sacred as the Tirupathi Balaji Temple of Andhra Pradesh.
• Bangaru Tirupathi, Guttahalli: Guttahalli is located in Bangarpet taluk and is on the KGF -Mulbagal road. This place is said to have been the meditation ground of the great sage Bhrigu Maharshi and was popularly known also as Bangaragiri. Here, there is a small hillock about 40 metres high where the Venkateshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu is built. This temple is also called as Bangaru Tirupati or Chinna Tirupathi. On the way uphill, one can visit the shrines of Varahaswamy, Lakshmi, Vighneshwata and Veeranjaneya. At the hilltop, you have the Venkateshwara Temple, where you can view the main deity through a six-hole window. Nearby this hillock, to the South-East, on a small hillock there is a shrine dedicated to Goddess Padmavathi.
• Hunkunda : Relics documenting ancient gold mining were found in Hunakunda. Someshwara temple, a beautiful Nolamba structure with short cylindrical pillars is an interesting temple to see in Hunkunda.
• Mahaganapathy Temple, Kurudumale: Around 10 km from Mulbagal taluk is the Mahaganapathy Temple. The temple built in Vijayanagara style has a garbhagriha, two ardhamantapas and a large navaranga. The temple has a large Lord Ganapathy statue of black stone measuring about 8.5 feet tall and this idol of Lord Ganapathy is one of the biggest in Karnataka. Nearby is Someshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also known as Kutandeshwara (Kuttundadevar).
• Malur : Home to Shankara Narayana temple and Kurubara Gudi
• Mulabagal : Popular for Nacharamma cave temple, Anjaneya, Srinivasa, Varadaraja, Virabhadra, Govindaraja, Gopalakrishna temples
• Paparajanahalli : Home to Patalamma temple, Shiva temple and Usman Ali Darga. Bhutaganda cave near Kotikallu rock with Kannada inscriptions, remains of a fort and palace are other noteworthy attractions in Paparajanahalli.
• Bhairava Kshetra : Pilgrimage centre 19 kms from Kolar, at a village named Seethi. Home to Sripatisvara and Kalabhairava temples
• Tekal : Home to Varadarajaswamy, Anjaneya and Singaperumal temple. Tekal hill is also a scenic location with picturesque rocks and caves.
• Teruhalli : Home to Gangadhareshwara temple and Pandavara Hajara caves.
• Virupakshi : Home to Virupaksha temple
• Markandeshwara Temple, Vakkaleri: Vakkaleri is situated on the foothills of Markandeya Betta (hill), around 12 km from Kolar, is quite an ancient place. This place has earned significance because of copper-plate inscriptions of the Badami Chalukyan ruler Keertivarma of the 8th Century and are popularly called Vakkaleri Inscriptions. These inscriptions record the exploits and sing the praise of Keertivarma who conquered the nearby provinces. On top of the Markandeshwara Betta, behind Vakkaleri village, the Markandeshwara Temple is situated. It is built in the Vijayanagara style, and has a garbhagriha with two ardhamantapas. Legend has it that the great sage Markandeya who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva meditated here. It was destined that he would die at a young age of 16. And when the anointed day came, Yama came to take him. But Markandeya who was worshipping the Shivalinga, held on to it tightly asking Lord Shiva's protection when Yama threw his whip and sprung his noose around Markandeya's neck. But the noose also mistakenly landed around the Shivalinga. Lord Shiva thus emerged and then defeated Yama. And pleased with Markandeya's devotion, Lord Shiva gifted the boon of Chiranjeevi (who has no death) to Markandeya. Even today, one can see a three-finger mark on the Shivalinga and a mark of the whip inside the well situated in the temple.

• Kolar Gold Fields : Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) is around 30 km from Kolar and was at one time the deepest and most productive gold mine in the world. It is said that gold here has been mined from as early as 5th Century. The Champion Reef is believed to be one of the world's deepest and mined to a depth of 50 m. After a brief lull in the 1700s, the British reactivated mining in the 1880s. It is estimated that KGF has yielded around a whopping 800 tons of gold.
• Markandeya Dam: This dam site is near Budikote where the Markandeya River, rising in the Vakkaleri hills and flowing eastwards, splits into two streams here. The village of Budikote is found on the confluence of the two streams of the river. At a higher level of the river at Ukkunda village, across two small hillocks a dam is built between 1936-1940, having a height of 30 metres and 750 metres length. The beautiful reservoir that has been formed is today a local tourist attraction which attracts numerous tourists. Even after 80 years since it was built, it still irrigates many farmlands of paddy and sugar cane fields.
• Shivarapattana : Shivarapattana in Malur taluk has been attributed as "Shilpakashi" which it richly deserves. Shivarapatna is a small village where majority of the local population work on crafting idols mostly in stone and also in metal. Idols of Gods and Goddesses are hand chiseled here by local expert sculptors for various temples in Karnataka as well as other states. In 2010, the Government of Karnataka, gave Shivarapattana the status of ‘Paramparika Shilpakala Grama’ (Heritage Sculpture Village). The sculptors of Shivarapattana are capable of creating any type of traditional sculptures of any style be it be it the Nolamba, Ganga, Chola, Hoysala or Vijayanagara styles. And no wonder, there is good demand for their work in other states of India apart from Karnataka. In fact, sculpture work in stone/ metal are excellent souvenirs items to buy from Shivarapattana.

Kolar – The Epical Golden City

The epical golden city of Kolar is the doorway to Tirumala (Tirupati Temple), the abode of Lord Venkateswara and is located in the southern state of Karnataka.  It is about 70 km from the capital city Bangalore (Bengaluru). The city is famous for its holy temples, such as Someshwara and Kolaramma temples.

Historical significance of Kolar

Konganivarman, the founder of the Ganga Dynasty built the city of Kolar and ruled it for twenty years. Kolar, also referred to as Avantika-Kshetra, is famous for its pious foundations from ancient times. It has close links with the great legends, of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The author of the Ramayana, Sage Valmiki, is said to have resided here. Lord Rama is also believed to have spent a few days here on his way back to Ayodhya after his exile. Legend also has it that it was here that Sita came and gave birth to Luv and Kush after being rejected by Rama.

Attractions in and around Kolar

Kolar is subdivided into five taluks and each taluk has its own significance, which is elucidated below:-

• Someshwara Temple

Situated in the heart of Kolar, this archaeological structure dates back to the early 14th Century.  A classic example of the Vijayanagara style of architecture, featuring heavy Prakara walls, a Kalyana Mantapa or wedding hall, a Mukha Mandapa with massive pillars, a Vasantha Mantapa or Marriage Podium and a shrine for goddess Parvati, the consort of Shiva.

The temple has an ancient steep tank known as Kalyani. When this tank was initially discovered, many items manufactured in Canada, Britain and Belgium were discovered. The items included glasses, old pots and iron implements that were dumped into the tank by army officers.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the great sculptors who built this temple have breathed their very lives into each pillar.

The month of December would be the best time to visit this pious temple, as the climate is pleasant.

Kolaramma temple

Goddess Shakti, in the form of Kollorama, is the presiding deity of Kolar.  The Kolaramma Temple is her abode and was built in the Ganga Dynasty. The temples illustrate the Dravidian style of architecture with imprints of Chola inscription. The granite stone structure is 800 years old and is designed in an L-shape sharing two shrines on a single vestibule. One is for Durga, known as Kolaramma, and the other is for Saptamatrikas, the seven mothers.

Antharagange Exploration

Also known as Antaragange, it is a popular hill and trekking spot 70 km from Bangalore. The tracking point begins with the steps which lead to the temple known as Sri Kashi Vishweshwara temple. The temple also has a natural water pool. At the top of the hill, you would find the village called “Paparajanahalli”. It is well connected by road so you can drive directly if you need to. It takes 15 minutes to reach the temple and an hour to reach the village on foot.

• Kotilingeshwara Temple

Home to one of the world’s largest Shivalinga, the Kotilingeshwara Temple lies in the Kammasandra village in Kolar district. Every year on Mahashivratri, 600,000 devotees visit the temple.

In front of the largest Linga in Asia, there is a 35ft Nandi on a big platform. Eleven small temples of various deities are built around the main temple.

Bangaru Tirupati

This temple resembles the popular Tirupati Temple of Swamy Venkateswara in Tirumala. It is 29 km from Kolar in a village called Guttahilli. It also has the famous Garuda vehicle for Lord Vishnu.

It is heavily crowded with pilgrims in the month of Shravan (July –August).

Budikote also known as Fort of Ashes, the fort derives its name from an event that happened in the past. It is said that a large-scale Yagya was performed here and left a huge mound of ash. Hyder Ali, the father of Tipu Sultan, built the fort. Famous temples to visit are Venkataramana and Domeshwara.

Kolar Gold Field

The visit to this golden city would be a waste if you did not visit the famous Kolar Gold Fields. They are believed to be the second biggest gold mine in the world. During the period of the British raj, it used to produce a huge amount of gold and employed workers from Germany, Italy, Britain and Anglo-Indians.

Chikka Tirupati

The Lord Venkateshwara temple, also known as Keka Temple, is located at Chikka Tirupati, a popular attraction of Malur. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

In village Shivarapattana, one can find award-winning makers of rock sculptures. The other two temples to visit are Shankaranarayana and the Markandeswhwara

Also known as “Little Kanchi” or “Tyakal”, it is a little village that was once famous for 101 wells and 101 Temples. The Sri Varadharaja Temple and Someshwara Temple are the attractions of this quaint place.

The name of this place was derived from the Kannada word “Mudalabagilu”, which means Eastern Door. The name is given due to the fact that the eastern entrance to Mysore as well as the Vijayanagar Empire.  Very close by, a hill is supposed to be the first point of sunrise in Karnataka.

Another place that has links with the famous epics Mahabharata and Ramayana it is said that Arjun built a Hanuman Temple after the Mahabharata war. Maharishi Vashisht is supposed to have installed idols of Ram-Lakshman-Sita here.

Baba Hyder wali Dargah

The dargah of Sufi Saint Hazrath Baba Hyder Vali, it is over seven hundred years old. Both Muslims and Hindus come to get the spiritual blessings of the saint.

Kurudumale Ganesh Temple

This temple is the home of the massive Saligrama Ganesh Idol, that is at least 12ft. long and about 7ft. wide. The unique feature of this temple is that it has been built from a single rock and has no foundation.  The idol here matches no other Saligrama on Earth and is considered very powerful.  People start new jobs or projects only after seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesh.  It is also a favourite for all the politicians.

A temple that dates back eight generations, it was built in the 1200s by Vijayanagar rulers and is similar to the Virupaksheshwara Temple in Hampi. An unusual feature of this temple is that it has the figure of a lion in front of the Parvati Shrine.

• Narseemha Tirth – The place where Sreepaadaraja Swamiji lived and had his “Brindavan” or sacred resting place for his sages.
• Sripadaraja Math – This is the home of Sripadaraja Swamiji, a direct disciple of Saint Madhwacharya, who is said to be the third avatar of Vayu, the wind God. The two earlier avatars are Anjaneya or Hanuman, and the second was Bhima, the second Pandava.

Srinivaspura

A rural place, it is famous for the cultivation of rice, ragi, sorghum, maize, pulses, oilseeds, cashews, coconut, areca nut, cardamom, chillies, cotton, sugarcane and tobacco. The nearby tourist attractions are Kaiwara Hill and Kailasagiri Hill, an hour’s drive from Srinivaspura. Other nearby tourist venues include Pillalamrri, Pillalamarri Archaeological Museum, Mallelatheertham, Umamaheshwaram, Alampur and  Agasthyeswara Swamy temple.

Moscow Showcases Tourism Potential at SATTE 2024 International Exhibition in India

22.02.2024, New Delhi:  Moscow Tourism is thrilled to participate in the highly anticipated SATTE (South Asia’s Travel & Tourism Exchange) trade fair, held in Greater Noida, NCR, India from February 22-24. The delegation from Moscow is one of the largest at the event, featuring representatives from the Moscow City Tourism Committee, the Made in Moscow project team, and other key figures in the city’s tourism industry.

During the first day of the event, held on February 22, representatives from the Moscow City Tourism Committee took part in various business sessions and introduced the capital’s flagship projects. One of these projects, the Moscow Estates Festival, received significant attention during a discussion on cultural heritage. The festival, which gained popularity among foreign tourists last summer and this winter, offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history of Moscow’s historical mansions through theatrical tours, master classes, and other unique events. This interactive approach to studying cultural heritage has proven especially appealing to children and young people, who appreciate the recreated atmosphere and the chance to take stunning photographs.

Another highlight of Moscow’s tourism scene is the Moscow Tea Time project. At the Moscow exhibition stand, guests had the opportunity to taste different tea blends and learn about the city’s tea traditions. Currently taking place in Moscow hotels and restaurants, this project offers visitors the chance to enjoy tea time sets featuring an array of jams and pastries between 16:00 and 19:00 daily.

According to Evgeny Kozlov, First Deputy Head of the Office of the Mayor and the Government of Moscow, as well as Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee, Moscow hosts over 350 cultural and entertainment events each day, catering to all audiences, including families with children. With its extensive range of gastronomic establishments, including restaurants serving Indian cuisine, and hotels developing tailored offers for Indian guests, Moscow ensures a convenient and enjoyable experience for Indian tourists. Additionally, tourist navigation in the city is comprehensively duplicated in foreign languages, further enhancing the comfort of the journey.

As part of the SATTE business program, the “Moscow +” project showcased interregional routes designed to meet the demands of foreign travelers, including those from India, who often seek to combine visits to several cities within one trip. As the country’s main transport hub, Moscow offers ready-made tourist packages that combine experiences in Moscow with other regions such as St. Petersburg, Tyumen, and the Moscow Region. Russian tour operators participating in the project discussed their package offers specifically tailored to the Indian tourist market.

At the exhibition, Moscow also presented a wide range of traditional souvenirs crafted by participants of the “Made in Moscow” project. Sixteen Moscow-based entrepreneurs brought goods in categories including grooming cosmetics, home fragrances, HoReCa (Hotel, Restaurant, Catering/Café) products, children’s items, accessories, as well as vegetarian and vegan products, which captured the interest of Indian consumers.

The partnership between Moscow and India is thriving, encompassing both classic tourist trips and business tourism. Business visits have become increasingly popular among Indian travelers to Moscow. The Moscow City Tourism Committee shared successful experiences in organizing international conferences like the Meet Global MICE Congress, demonstrating Moscow’s potential in the field of business tourism.

Russia increases tourism and cultural cooperation with China

A meeting themed “Russia-China Cultural and Tourism Cooperation” was held at the Russian House in Beijing on Tuesday.

Representatives from China and Russia discussed tourism and cultural cooperation.

During an interview with Evgeny Kozlov, first deputy head of the Office of the Mayor and Government of Moscow and chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee, he highlighted business and film cooperation between the two countries.

Beijing and Moscow have enhanced business and tourism cooperation after the pandemic. Kozlov mentioned a large-scale communication with “15 companies from Moscow met with 150 companies from Beijing” and methods to promote Moscow-Beijing mutual tourist flow including “more than 56 direct flights from Moscow to Beijing”.

According to Kozlov, businessmen and elder people make up most of the Chinese tourists to Russia and social media has been an important channel to promote Russia’s tourism to Chinese people, especially young people.

Kozlov stressed that an optimistic attitude is necessary to develop tourism in the post-pandemic era.

Besides, “film can be a new kind of business communication,” said Kozlov. He mentioned that Moscow has a cinema platform initiative to create platforms for Russian and Chinese film producers. Studios of about 300 hectares are under construction in Moscow for future investment and cooperation in film production.

Kozlov said cooperation to create new fashion connections would be considered when talking about a fashion trend in China that combines traditional Chinese style and characteristics.

Russia’s Golden Ring Cities: the best 10 day itinerary

Due to the current situation, I advice against travel to Russia at the moment. All affiliated links related to Russia have been removed. But I have decided to keep my posts about Russia as it remains a beautiful country. I hope that circumstances change and that travel is possible again in the near future.

In this post about Russia’s Golden Ring cities I will share the ultimate golden ring itinerary. One of the most picturesque and historic parts of Russia. This is the Russia you imagine, with rural villages, wooden houses and onion domed churches set amidst picturesque landscapes.

Russia’s Golden Ring cities are a world away from Moscow. The capital is there to impress you. Sometimes in a good way and sometimes less so. However, Moscow is only one face of Russia. 

Around Moscow you will find Russia’s Golden Ring. A circle of ancient towns from the medieval period that played an important role in the development of the Russian state and the Russian orthodox church. Most of them are on the UNESCO world heritage list because of their ancient monasteries, cathedrals and kremlins. 

Some of Russia’s Golden ring cities are possible to visit as a day trip from Moscow. Others are a destination in itself. They are all connected by public transport and traveling in between them is pretty straightforward and easy.

This Golden Ring itinerary will be a highlight of your trip to Russia and will bring you to the most beautiful Golden ring cities. 

Russia’s Golden Ring cities

There has been a big debate which cities are included within Russia’s Golden Ring. Therefore the Soviets made an official list with Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl Zalessky, Rostov Veliky, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Vladimir and Suzdal.

Some Golden ring itineraries also include smaller towns like Uglich with its ancient Kremlin or Alexandrov, the former residence of Russian princes.

Although each Golden Ring city has its own charms, the architecture is somewhat similar. You will see colorful onion domes, intricate frescoes, and ornate decorations, showcasing the unique Russian style. Therefore it would not make sense to include all of them in your Golden ring itinerary.  

After some background research I decided to focus my own Golden Ring itinerary on the Golden Ring cities of Sergiev Posad, Yaroslavl, Vladimir and Suzdal.

Russia’s Golden Ring itinerary   

Day 1 – 4: moscow.

Any Golden ring itinerary starts in Moscow. Russia’s crazy and chaotic capital. Personally, I didn’t particularly like Moscow, yet it is fascinating and has lots of interesting things to do. 4 days in Moscow would be enough to see its major attractions like the Moscow metro , the Red square and the Kremlin . 

Moscow offers a great introduction to Russia and it is a good way to start your Golden Ring itinerary.   

Day 5: Sergiev Posad

Sergiev Posad is either an easy day trip from Moscow or a stop over on your way to Rostov Veliky and Yaroslavl.

Sergiev Posad is probably one of the most important Golden Ring cities, because it is the seat of the Russian orthodox church. In other words, it’s like the Vatican of Russia. It all started with Saint Sergius. He was a hermit that lived in the forests around Sergiev Posad.

Other monks joined him and soon Saint Sergius became their spiritual leader. He built a small wooden church in 1337 and this is how the holy Trinity monastery started. Later Saint Sergius was declared the patron saint of Russia. After that the monastery grew into one of the most important monasteries of Russia. 

The complex has several churches and cathedrals. Each with beautiful and ancient frescoes. It still is an active place of worship and even if you are not religious, watching a Russian orthodox mass is an enchanting experience.

Although this is not included in this Golden Ring itinerary, Sergiev Posad is also a good place from where you can make day trips to the other Golden Ring cities of Alexandrov and Pereslavl Zalessky. 

Alexandrov is where tsar Ivan the terrible lived for 16 years and has an ancient Kremlin with a dark history. It was the center of Ivan’s state policy to repress the elite. Pereslavl Zalessky also has some ancient churches and monasteries. Both are connected by train or bus from Sergiev Posad within an hour. 

Logistics     

How to get there : The easiest way to get from Moscow to Sergiev Posad is by train. I recommend taking one of the frequent local trains that leave almost every hour from Moscow’s Yaroslavsky train station. The journey takes 1.5 hours.

You can continue continue from Sergiev Posad by train to Pereslavl Zalessky (1 hrs), Rostov Veliky (2 hrs) or Yaroslavl (3 hrs) or return to Moscow on a day trip. 

Day trips : Alexandrov, Pereslavl Zalessky

Where to eat : Varenichnaya 9

Day 6 – 7: Yaroslav

Yaroslavl is a rather big town with a scenic location on the Volga river. It’s history goes far back to the 11th century when it was an important economic center in the region. Ivan the Great loved Yaroslavl and the town joined the Moscow state in 1463.  

It’s historic center is on the UNESCO world heritage list , because it is a good example of the city reform plans of Catherine the Great. Although some of its churches and monasteries are older, most buildings are from the 18th and 19th century. 

Therefore Yaroslavl is an interesting mix reflecting different time periods. Most important, it has a variety of things to do that go beyond its ancient churches and monasteries. Although they are well worth a visit, you might by now, already suffer from an overdose of religious monuments on your Golden Ring itinerary.   

Highlights of Yaroslavl include the scenic walks you can take along the Volga river embankment, feasting on dumplings in the first Soviet pelmeni restaurant (Podbelka) and filling your stomach with delicious Russian pies at Shtolle. For Soviet enthusiasts, there is also an impressive House of Soviets, a Lenin statue and a small monument to Tereshkova, the first woman in space.   

Yaroslavl is also a great base to make some day trips to the more scenic and rural Golden Ring cities. Rostov Veliky and Kostroma with its picturesque ancient kremlins are about an hour away by train or bus. A bit further is Uglich. 

Sights : Walking along the embankment, Church of Elijah the prophet, House of the Soviets, Annunciation cathedral, Saint john the baptist church, Tereshkova monument, Lenin statue, Monastery

How to get there : Yaroslavl and Moscow are connected by train in 3 to 4 hours. 

Day trips : Rostov veliky, Kostroma, Uglich

Where to eat : Buffet number 1, Shtolle, Podbelka

Day 8: day trip to Rostov Veliky

My time was limited and therefore I could only make one day trip from Yaroslavl. I chose Rostov Veliky.

Together with Suzdal it was one of the most picturesque places on my Golden Ring itinerary. Even better, it lacks the touristy atmosphere from Suzdal and its Kremlin was one of the most beautiful I have seen. Add the scenic location on the Nero lake and the picture perfect image of Rostov Veliky is complete.

Rostov Veliky is small though. Outside of its Kremlin and the nearby Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery there isn’t much else to do. Which makes it perfect as a day trip from Yaroslavl or even Moscow (3+ hours by train). 

The 16th century Kremlin is somewhat of an anomaly. Most Kremlins were built to protect the city’s most important buildings. Rostov’s impressive Kremlin walls were made more for show than anything else. The wide gates would allow any enemy to enter easily. 

The kremlin has several ancient cathedrals, a courtyard and a peaceful garden. From the Kremlin it’s a scenic walk along lake Nero to the Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery

How to get there : From Yaroslavl it is about 1 hour by train or bus to get to Rostov Veliky. From Moscow it will take more than 3 hours to get there. 

Where to eat : Alyosha Popovich near the Kremlin serves delicious traditional Russian food for reasonable prices.     

Day 9 – 10: Vladimir and Suzdal

Vladimir and Suzdal both developed in the 13th century. Vladimir as an administrative and economic center and Suzdal as the religious heart of the region. Together they are on the UNESCO World Heritage list as the white monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal .  

Vladimir is one of the oldest cities in Russia’s golden ring and was founded by prince Vladimir. It soon became the capital of Russia and enjoyed great wealth and prosperity. It was a golden age in which most of Vladimirs white stone cathedrals and palaces were built. That was until the Mongols destroyed Vladimir in 1238.

Nearby Suzdal is slightly older, but lost its political power to nearby Vladimir. It remained an important religious center though with more monasteries and churches than any other town near Moscow. 

Personally, I found it to be one of the most picturesque places in Russia’s Golden Ring. There is a rural rustic atmosphere that makes it feel like you are travelling back in time.

However, something needs to be noted here. It’s partly a Soviet creation. As they wanted to focus on Suzdal’s tourist potential the Soviets did not allow the construction of new or high rise buildings. They even moved wooden structures from other parts of Russia to Suzdal.

The result is that Suzdal is very touristic, but also very pretty. Furthermore, the historical significance of its 11th century Kremlin and 16th century monasteries is no less. Suzdal’s Kremlin is even older than the Moscow kremlin . 

Suzdal has enough things to see and do for a full day trip from Vladimir or Moscow. A lot of people skip Vladimir, but its historic center is also well worth a visit. Some of its ancient cathedrals survived the Mongol invasion.

How to get there : From Yaroslavl to Vladimir there is no direct train connection. You could either take two fast trains (Yaroslavl – Moscow, Moscow – Vladimir) or a direct bus. There are only a few direct buses and the journey takes 5 hours.

From Moscow to Vladimir there is a high speed train to Vladimir that takes less than 2 hours. 

What to see : Golden gate, Old Vladimir museum (water tower), Borodin blacksmith workshop, Annunciation church, Demetrius cathedral

Where to eat : Mint owl, Pelmenj

Day trips from Vladimir : Suzdal

Logistics Suzdal

How to get there : To get from Moscow to Suzdal you first need to get to Vladimir. In Vladimir you can go to the bus station that is conveniently located across the train station. There is a bus to Suzdal every 30 minutes and the journey is little less than an hour

What to see : Deposition of the robe convent, Alexander male monastery,Monastery of Saint Euthymius, Pokrovski monastery, Kremlin

Where to eat : Chaynaya, Gostiny dvor

After Russia’s Golden Ring cities

This Golden ring itinerary of Russia stops in Vladimir. After that you can either return to Moscow or continue your journey in Russia.

From Vladimir it is only 3 hours to Nizhny Novgorod. It is not part of Russia’s Golden Ring cities, but also has an old Kremlin and is nice to visit.  

Russia’s Golden Ring cities Travel Tips

When to visit.

Russia’s Golden Ring cities are so scenic that every season has it’s own charms. I was there in winter and the thick blanket of snow only made it more like a fairytale.

Obviously spring is lovely with its blooming flowers and autumn brings beautiful colors in the trees. Summer is the peak tourist season in the Golden Ring cities, as the weather is generally warm and pleasant. However, it can get crowded, especially in July and August. This is also when many festivals and events take place, providing an opportunity to witness traditional celebrations and cultural performances.

Accommodation in Russia’s Golden Ring cities

Where to stay in moscow.

Hostels Rus : Hostels Rus stand for clean and professional hostels with a mix of dormitories and a limited number of double rooms for good prices. They are often located close to one of the Moscow metro stations making travel in Moscow easy. There is one near Kurskaya and one near Paveletskaya (dorms only).

Vinegret hostel : Vinegret hostel is a clean and nice budget hostel with an excellent location in the heart of Moscow. It is right near Arbatskaya metro station on the famous arbat street. From there you can walk to the red square in only 30 minutes.

Axel hostel : Axel hostel has great budget dormitories with lots of privacy. It has a central location within walking distance of Kitay Gorod.

Where to stay in Sergiev Posad

Hostels Rus : Hostels Rus is one of the few hostels in Sergiev Posad. It has clean dormitories and double rooms. It’s a great budget option, but a bit far from everything. That said, it is still within walking distance from the center.

Guest house Shishkina : If you have a bit more money I can recommend the central Guest house Shishkina. The double rooms are lovely and still in the budget category.

Where to stay in Yaroslavl

City hostel : I stayed at City hostel. It’s a great budget place that is centrally located. The rooms were clean and the people were very helpful, despite the language barriers

Zolotoye Koltso : Zolotoye Koltso hostel has great reviews for its small, but clean and cheap rooms and dormitories in the centre of Yaroslavl.

Where to stay in Vladimir

Hostel Belyy Topol : I stayed in hostel Belyy topol. Although the staff didn’t really speak english, they were very helpful. The rooms were clean and the location was very convenient near the train station and in walking distance of the historic sights. 

Hostel Vishnya : Hostel Vishnya is another hostel with good reviews near the train and bus station. It has both dormitories and private rooms for reasonable prices. 

Samovar hostel : Samovar hostel has a scenic location within Vladimirs historic center. It has good reviews because of their clean and spacious dorms and private rooms. 

Where to stay in Suzdal

Suzdal has lots of accommodation options. There are no real backpacker hostels, but you will find some budget guesthouses. 

Patchwork guesthouse : Patchwork guesthouse is a simple guesthouse with a couple of small, but clean double rooms. It is within walking distance of the main sights and has a very friendly and helpful owner

Viktoria Guest house  : Viktoria guesthouse is a good budget option not far from the center with clean rooms

Wow- Russia is definitely one of those countries you need to visit in the winter! The architecture is just so stunning with the white snow!

So interesting so see these Russian cities. We visited Moscow and thought it was incredible but clearly we have much more to see and explore in the future. Visiting in the winter really adds to the atmosphere of these places and a topping of snow is the icing on the cake. Thank you for sharing.
