A guide to LGBTQ+ travel in Latin America

With museums, culture, nightlife, family outings and safe spaces to  relax in, Latin America has much to offer LGBTQ+ travellers.

Latin America is a vast region of over 656 million inhabitants. Stretching across two continents, it’s a storied location where people and cultures from Europe, Africa, the Americas and elsewhere mixed and settled. Spanish and Portuguese, vestiges of two rival superpowers, are the dominant languages. The ancient empires, Aztec, Incan, Mayan and others, still make their presence known — from the archaeological highlights of museums to the living spectacles of carnivals, parades and religious celebrations, like the macabre Day of the Dead and the continued worship of goddesses like Yemanjá brought from the West African coast.

The region’s powerhouse cities are where LGBTQ+ nightlife, culture and political progress are most visible, from the Beaux-Arts streets of Buenos Aires to the sun-kissed Rio de Janeiro, with its spectacular natural setting of mountains and beaches. Indeed, it’s these sandy stretches many tourists come to Latin America for, whether they’re seeking the golden shores of the Caribbean coast or the dramatic, mountainous landscapes that butt against the Pacific, creating conditions that every surfer dreams of.

A person is walking on a busy street, wearing a dress with a long trail in the colors of the pride flag

One of the most thrilling of all Latin American destinations, glamorous Buenos Aires should be the starting point of every Argentine adventure. It’s also one of the world’s leading countries on LGBTQ+ human rights issues — it passed a national same-sex marriage equality law in 2010, five years before the US and three before the UK. Peppered with French Beaux-Arts architecture, Buenos Aires is crisscrossed by grand boulevards and marble-embellished monuments. Visitors will find hundreds of bookshops to explore, the most famous of which, El Ateneo Grand Splendid, is housed in a former theatre. There are cafes, museums and a glittering opera house. To walk along any street, especially the Nueve de Julio, is a dizzying experience.

Where to go at night in Argentina? Buenos Aires is home to some of the best LGBTQ+ nightlife on the continent, and it’s not for the faint hearted. Things don’t get going until past midnight, with locals out long after sunrise. Club Amerika in the Almagro neighbourhood is the city’s largest nightclub and a centre point of LGBTQ+ nightlife. El Lugar Gay is a small, men-only budget hotel located in the historic San Telmo neighbourhood, an area known for its Sunday antiques fair and tango performances.

Where to see Argentinian culture? Though a controversial figure in Argentina, former First Lady Eva Perón, better known as Evita, remains one of the country’s most well-known figures — a Dior-clad gay icon to many LGBTQ+ locals, with stars like Madonna, Patti LuPone and Elaine Paige having portrayed her. Her myth, mystery, legend and wardrobe are explored at Museo Evita in the elegant Palermo neighbourhood.

Where to go with family in Argentina? This nightlife-oriented city has plenty for queer family gaycations, from watching the famous ‘cat ladies’ take care of felines in Recoleta Cemetery to the Abasto neighbourhood’s Museo de los Niños , with educational science activities for children. Argentina’s Patagonian region makes an excellent option for skiing or hiking trips in Bariloche. Those of drinking age will enjoy Mendoza, an important wine region, where the Malbec grape reigns supreme.

Few places in Latin America rival the powerhouse experience that is Brazil. One of the largest countries in the world, this South American nation pulsates with a landscape as diverse as its people, with thousands of miles of beachfront, metropolitan cities, mountains and the Amazon rainforest, to name just a few points of interest. With so much to see and do, it’s hard to choose what to start with first in Brazil, and many LGBTQ+ travellers make repeat visits.

Where to go at night in Brazil? Rio is an effervescent metropolis and former capital where neighbourhoods jostle between mountains and beaches, the giant art deco statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado mountain rising above it all. The highlight of the year is Carnival — the largest such celebration in the world — in February or March, depending on the Easter calendar. It’s all about the beaches here and two are main centres of LGBTQ+ life — Ipanema, especially its Rua Farme de Amoedo gay beach, and the densely urban Copacabana beach, where locals and visitors alike pose for sunset photos with the curvaceous Sugarloaf Mountain in the background. A Brazilian cultural highlight is in Rio’s Flamengo Park, which is home to the Carmen Miranda Museum , celebrating the actress whose oversized fruit-covered headdresses inspired many a drag queen.

A lperiod is wearing a black and red top, with a matching coloured hat and a pride flag coloured umbrella.

Where to explore in Brazil? Visitors will find urban charm in São Paulo, with its contrasting wealthy and impoverished neighbourhoods operating within walking distance of each other. Every May, it hosts a massive gay pride parade with millions of spectators lining Avenida Paulista. Salvador, in the northeastern state of Bahia, is a hotspot for Afro-Brazilian culture. Statues of Yemanjá, mother of orishas (divine spirits) in the Yoruba religion, are everywhere — a nod to the area’s past. A visit to Pelourinho is a highlight for many, its cobblestone streets lined with colourful buildings stretching to stunning vistas.

Where to go with family in Brazil? For LGBTQ+ family travellers with kids, no trip to Brazil is complete without visiting Iguazú Falls, a series of waterfalls in the country’s south where it edges against Argentina and Paraguay. Several times larger than their North American counterpart, legend says Eleanor Roosevelt exclaimed, “Poor Niagara!” upon seeing them.

Visitors to Mexico should start in its glorious capital, filled wih museums and cultural venues like Palacio de Bellas Artes, with its Beaux Arts facade and art deco interior, or the fascinating National Anthropology Museum. Once the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, the city is centred around the massive Zócalo, a square where Spanish buildings were constructed over ancient temples and pyramids.

Where to see the best of Mexican nightlife? Only in Zona Rosa — literally the Pink Zone — can travellers find such a dense concentration of LGBTQ+ nightlife. Near the Angel of Independence monument along Avenida de la Reforma, bars, nightclubs, restaurants and other venues popular with LGBTQ+ tourists and locals abound, along with some of the city’s best hotels.

An outside view of the Frida Kahlo museum in mexico city. The walls are blue whilst the area round the doorways have been painted red, and the doors themselves are green.

Where to see Mexican culture? The Frida Kahlo Museum is located in the bohemian Colonia del Carmen neighbourhood. Known as the Casa Azul, this tribute to the bisexual artist has been open to the public since the late 1950s.

Where to explore nature in Mexico? Mexico’s coastlines offer a wide array of beaches to explore. Cancun and the Riviera Maya on the Yucatán peninsula are among its jewels and the source of much of the country’s income from tourism. Storied Puerto Vallarta, one of Latin America’s most popular LGBTQ+ beach destinations, overlooks the Pacific.

Peru is geographically diverse, with beaches, mountains and the western stretches of the Amazon jungle, making it a must-visit spot for nature-seeking travellers.

Where to see the best of Peruvian nightlife? Peru’s capital, Lima, is a gastronomic paradise, with native cuisine like ceviche, a raw fish and citrus dish, and drinks such as the pisco sour a popular choice. The country’s large and influential Japanese population has also impacted the culture and the cuisine. The main LGBTQ+ area is garden-like district Miraflores, the name of which means ‘look at the flowers’. Sadly, two prominent gay nightlife spots, Lola Bar and Discoteca Legendaris, have recently closed; luckily, a number of new joints are in the works. However, ValeTodo DownTown , a bar central to the strong gay residential presence here, remains open and thriving.

Where to go on an outdoor adventure in Peru? One of the reasons many visitors come to Peru is to trace the country’s ancient Incan roots. Two of the world’s most coveted bucket-list destinations are in Peru: the ancient Andean temple complex Machu Picchu with its stunning views, and Cusco, which was a capital of the Incan Empire. Visitors will come across colonial buildings representing the Spanish conquest built on top of ancient temples, the periods of architecture instantly recognisable via differing stonework. A rickety train traverses a stunning mountain pass to connect Cusco and Machu Pichu, allowing for day trips. More adventurous travellers can hike the various Inca Trails over several days, finding lesser-known historic ruins along the way.

While certain parts of Latin America might be known for a degree of brashness, travellers will   find a more reserved destination when they visit Chile. Santiago, the capital, stretches along the city’s main thoroughfare, Avenida Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins, and sits either side of the Mapocho River.

What to do at nighttime in Chile? The gay heart of Santiago is in the quaint district Barrio Bellavista, much of which dates to the 1920s. Chile is a former Spanish colony, and these influences can be seen in much of the area’s architecture, from the terracotta shingles to the white stucco walls. At night, the district comes alive with music and partying, as locals and visitors head to clubs, restaurants and bars, many with live music. The neighbourhood is dominated by San Cristóbal Hill and its statue of the Virgin Mary, a symbol of the city, connected by a not-always-functioning funicular.

Where to see Chilean culture? Argentina’s Mendoza on the other side of the Andes might be South America’s better known wine region, but Chile has one of the continent’s largest. What makes it even more ideal for visitors to the capital is that there’s no need to fly to a second destination. The wine region surrounds Santiago, most of it within an hour-and-a half drive by car or organised tour to Casablanca Valley, the Maipo region or the Central Valley, where wineries like Concha y Toro create magical elixirs from Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes.

Tips for Gay and Lesbian Travelers in Chile

Gays and lesbians visiting Chile will most likely not encounter any prejudice or outward intolerance. However, public displays of affection between same sexes are rare, even in metropolitan cities such as Santiago. In general, attitudes, especially those of Chilean men, toward gays and lesbians are not very liberal, owing in part to the Catholic, conservative nature of their society. Homosexual relationships have only recently been declared officially legal, and many gays and lesbians are not actively open about their orientation outside their own circles. In Santiago, the two most gay-friendly neighborhoods are Bellavista and Parque Forestal (also known as Bellas Artes).

The best source for information is the website www.santiagogay.com , a resource directory that covers gay issues and provides information about travel, gay-oriented businesses and bars, employment, and more. Gay Adventure Tours, Inc. (tel. 888/206-6523; www.gayadventuretours.com) occasionally offers trips to Chile. The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association ( IGLTA; tel. 800/448-8550 or 954/776-2626; www.iglta.com) is the trade association for the gay and lesbian travel industry, and offers an online directory of gay- and lesbian-friendly travel businesses; go to the website and click on "Members."

South America's 4 most LGBTIQ+friendly cities for Pride celebrations

May 23, 2022 • 6 min read

Annual gay pride march held in the streets of the city of Buenos Aires in November 2017. Young couple of two lesbian women hugged wanting to kiss each other in the middle of the crowd.

Adventure awaits the LGBTIQ+ traveler in South America in 2022: head south for a range of beautiful natural sceneries, astonishing world wonders and some of the liveliest parties in the world.

While most countries in South America are largely Catholic and retain a very conservative outlook, many of these destinations are evolving to embrace their LGBTIQ+ communities, particularly in Argentina , Uruguay , Brazil , Colombia and parts of Chile .

Below we've compiled a list of four of the most LGBTIQ+ friendly cities in South America, destinations where gay, queer and trans travelers will find thriving communities and plenty to explore.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Argentina is socially liberal compared to most of its neighbors – it was the first country in South America to legalize gay marriage in July 2010, and the ruling also included full adoption rights.

Consequently, Buenos Aires is one of the most gay-friendly places in South America. Each November, the city hosts a large Pride festival that attracts over 100,000 people, and the government also invests in and supports the LGBTIQ+ community – an international gay business and LGBT tourism conference called Network360  takes place every August along with the BADiversa week, which includes a variety of festivals, events and concerts.

Travelers shouldn't miss the Sunday market at San Telmo, as they'll be treated to live tango performances in the streets, and of course, many souvenirs to buy. If you need a respite from the busy market, the nearby Pride Cafe  is the perfect place for a few afternoon cocktails.

One of the most unique things about Buenos Aires is its tango culture, in particular, the rise of the queer  milongas (tango halls) over the past decade. A fact lost to time: when it started in the late 1800s, tango was initially a dance between two men. Today, head to one of these  milongas  to learn the tango and then watch live shows with same-sex partners. The two main queer milongas are La Marshall and Tango Queer , both located in San Telmo.

Buenos Aires is also home to a large LGBTIQ+ nightlife scene, with extensive bars and clubs to fit everyone's interests. Catch a show at  Sitges , tear up the dance floor at Glam  and explore Amerika's three floors; and the weekly “Fiesta Puerca” + “Fiesta Plop!” parties at the Teatro Vorterixm in Palermo are frequented by the 18-25  crowds.

Bogotá, Colombia

Bogotá , Colombia's bustling capital city, has undergone a massive transition over the past 20 years. Thanks to its cultural diversity, Colombian society tends to be open and tolerant despite being so staunchly Catholic. It is, however, worth noting that the machismo attitude still persists quite strongly in rural areas, particularly by the coast.

The capital city, Bogotá, is an excellent destination for LGBTIQ+ travelers who will find a welcoming scene in the Chapinero neighborhood , home to gay hangouts like the bar/restaurants  El Recreo de Adán  and Estación Cafe . The main highlight of Bogotá's gay scene is the mega-club  Theatron , the largest LGBTQ club in South America. The complex is split into 13 mini clubs spread over 5 floors, and each one has its own theme. All the rooms are open on Saturday nights, and the entry of 48,000 pesos ($16/£12) allows you to access all areas and includes an open bar until 2am.

Famous for its street art, hip student vibe and its top-notch museums (like the Museo del Oro ), the Candelaria neighborhood in downtown Bogotá is also a great area to explore.

Montevideo, Uruguay

When it comes to liberal attitudes, Uruguay is one of the most progressive places in the world. Gay rights in Uruguay have long been respected: homosexuality was decriminalized in 1934; anti-discrimination laws have been in place since 2003; adoption laws were enacted in 2009, and gay marriage was legalized in early 2013. As such, society in Uruguay is largely very accepting, tolerant and super gay-friendly.

Montevideo's Marcha por la Diversidad

Montevideo has the largest LGBTIQ+ community in the country, and its Marcha por la Diversidad takes place on the last Friday of September. The city is also home to some great LGBTIQ+-friendly restaurants and bars. Check out La Pasiva – famous for its pizza, beer and somewhat suggestive logo or  La Fonda , an organic-focused, family-style joint that proudly flies the rainbow flag. On weekends, most start a night out with a few drinks at Chains Pub before heading to Il Tempo . Expect go-go dancers and hilarious drag shows – perfect opportunities to learn a few Spanish slang words.

Santiago, Chile

Chile has come a long way since the dark days of the oppressive Pinochet years between 1973 and 1990, when LGBTIQ+ people were detained and reportedly killed in high numbers. In just a few decades, Chile has quickly evolved to having major gay events and a strong queer culture, and in December 2021 passing marriage equality laws in a landslide vote. As a sign of solidarity with its LGBTIQ+ community, the Palacio de la Moneda (the formal office of the president) in central Santiago lights up with rainbow colors on May 17 for the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO). Chilean society outside of the big cities does remain very conservative, with a strong influence from the Catholic Church. However, attitudes are slowly changing.

Santiago’s gay scene is large and mainly congregated into one area called Bellavista , which harbors a mix of bars, clubs and restaurants. One of Santiago’s most famous restaurants is the gay-owned Sarita Colonia . The eclectic décor resembles something from an LSD trip or Alice in Wonderland , and the establishment's self-proclaimed theme is “Peruvian Transvestite Kitchen” – what the website explains is a "tribute to the apocryphal Peruvian miracle-worker followed by immigrants, prisoners, homosexuals, transsexuals and transvestites, where marginalized rage is welcomed and transformed into balm for tolerance and respect." The food at Sarita Colonia is delicious, too.

The best road trips in Chile: From Patagonia to the Atacama Desert

Nightlife kicks off in the early evening on the terrace of the popular bar/restaurant Station Bar ; Bar 105 is another popular choice thanks to their tasty pisco sours. There are a handful of bars that host drag shows later in the evening, the most popular stops being Dionisio , Burdel and Farinelli . Should you still be going strong at that point in the evening, hit the dance floor at  Club Soda . Near to Santiago, you'll find one of the largest gay clubs in the whole of South America, Il Divino, located in the nearby resort town of Viña del Mar .

Another highlight in Santiago is the rich wine culture — the city is full of bodegas where you can stop in for a taste of Chile's prized nectar. The LGBTQ-focused Pride Tours Chile  does package trips for gay travelers to Santiago, which include wine tasting at the best bodegas.

How LGBTQ Pride Is Growing in Santiago, Chile

Pride parade in Santiago, Chile

Around 100,000 people came together on the streets of Santiago, Chile on 23 June for the biggest event of the city’s month-long Pride celebrations.

© Carla Granifo

The march was the country’s largest LGBTQ event. One of the city’s most attended Pride marches, the day saw Santiago’s queers, gays, transgenders, non-binaries and more come together in a parade of music and color.

It’s the city’s 19th Pride , organized jointly between Chile’s principal LGBTQ organizations, el Movimiento de Integración y Liberación Homosexual (Movilh) and Fundación Iguales. The first took place in 2000, 10 years after the country returned to democracy in 1990.

Since then, Santiago’s LGBTQ community have valiantly fought to win rights, but progress has been slow. However, there has been a period of change recently: civil union was legalized in 2015 and gay marriage and the transgender bill were submitted for government approval. While gay marriage continues to be debated, last month marked a landmark ruling for members of the trans community, when the Gender Identity Bill was passed into Senate, the final stage of legislative approval. If made law, it will allow any trans person over the age of 18 to legally change their gender without requiring surgery.

© Carla Granifo

Santiago’s Orgullo is a celebration of the bravery, defiance, and commitment that the gay community exhibit to secure these rights, but the event also acts as a protest to demonstrate the issues that still need to be addressed. Many marching held signs demanding the right for gay couples to adopt (currently only single parent adoption is allowed) as well as a call to finally legalize gay marriage. Crowd members also raised another dominant issue, “Justicia Para Nicole”, which is a movement that demands punishment for the murder of Nicola Saavedra , who was brutally tortured and murdered two years ago in a shocking attack. Her murder remains unsolved.

© Carla Granifo

All in all, the march exhibited a balance of celebration and protest, and proved to be a remarkable event in which the city’s LGBTQ community could come together, bolstered by the support of the city. This year was the first year that a network of companies participated and pledged their support with five sponsored vehicles blasting music to keep the party atmosphere going. HIV tests were also offered for the first time this year. These changes signal how fast Pride is growing and gaining support in Chile. The march culminated with music and speeches in Plaza de Los Heroes, before many went on to check out some of the epic Pride parties hosted around town.

Amazing. Our Guide was very fun and knowledgeable. She made the trip seem seamless and was a great resource of information.

This is a must-do adventure!

The Rwanda Gorilla Trek was easily one of the most beautiful, spectacular, exceptional moments in my life! To be so close to these magnificent creatures was incomprehensible and life-changing. The Golden Monkeys were phenomenal as well. This is a must-do adventure!

It exceeded all expectations

This was my first Out Adventures experience, and it exceeded all expectations. The team, the boat we were on, the places we visited, and the other travelers were all just wonderful. I would highly recommend Out Adventures!

Once in a lifetime adventure

Once in a lifetime adventure everyone should experience, surrounded by a great group of people. Outstanding organization and communication from the Out Adventures representatives so there was nothing I had to worry about once the trip was booked.
