Marc Soler describes inability to stand up after Tour de France crash: 'I was really dizzy'

Movistar rider Marc Soler has revealed in disturbing detail how he was barely able to ride a bike after crashing hard on stage one of the Tour de France .

The Spaniard was badly injured in the mass pile-up with 47km to go during Saturday’s stage, the crash caused by a spectator whose sign was hit by Jumbo-Visma’s Tony Martin that sent dozens of riders to the ground.

The 27-year-old, who had harboured hopes of a high-placing in the Tour, suffered three fractures in his arms but was able to ride to the finish. He did not start stage two due to his injuries. At a time when there is increased pressure on the sport to address injuries in racing and specifically concussion, Soler’s recollection of the event will raise questions, especially given how he is now not able to cycle for a month, ruling him out of August’s Vuelta a España.

>>> Tour de France organisers will not sue fan who caused mass pile-up on stage one

Writing in La Vanguardia , a Spanish newspaper, the Catalan said: “The fall came at a point where the road narrowed, and we were looking for positions.

“We were going through to the front, which is the safest position in case there is an incident, and suddenly I saw the Jumbo-Visma rider fall to my right, and in front of me, I collided with [Mike] Teunissen.

“I flew, tumbled, and landed hard on my hands. They both hurt, as did my face where my sunglasses had broken and my shoulder too.

“I tried to stand up but couldn’t, I had no strength in my arms. The mechanic pulled me by the armpits, and I sat on the side of the road, I was really dizzy.

“There were still 50 kilometres to go. [The team] told me to try to continue but I don’t know how I did it, I couldn’t change gears or brake.

“When I got to the finish, I was worried about the time limit, but I couldn’t even get undressed on the bus, they had to cut them with scissors. Then when we got to the medical truck, they confirmed my injuries.”

Soler fractured the ulnar and radial head on his left hand and the radial on the right.

Fortunately for Soler, who was part of a strong-looking Movistar squad that includes veteran Alejandro Valverde and Colombian Miguel Ángel López, he did require any surgery but he is forced to rest at home and wait for his injuries to recover.

“No surgery was necessary, and I can go without a cast if I go well, which is what I am doing,” he added.

“I wear my arm in a sling and a wrist strap that immobilises the area. I have to spend between three and four weeks without doing anything, not even on the rollers because I cannot support myself.

This means losing all shape, as the body quickly adapts to rest. I hope to still ride a race, but I can say goodbye to the Vuelta a España.”

Soler, who won a stage of the Tour de Romandie in April, also confirmed that he is considering filing a lawsuit against the fan who caused the accident.

The Tour de France organisers ASO have said that they will not be taking such action, although the 30-year-old woman is facing criminal charges and could spend up to a year in prison.

“I don’t know what to do, [but] I think I will sue the spectator because it’s a whole Tour thrown away and I feel a lot of anger,” he said.

Eurosport

Updated 27/06/2021 at 12:04 GMT

Marc Soler has pulled out of the Tour de France after fracturing both his arms in the awful Stage 1 crash. He somehow managed to get back onto his bike and finish the stage on Saturday, but he has now withdrawn from the Tour having now been checked over at hospital. Chris Froome started Stage 2 despite also being involved in heavy crash less than 10 kilometres before the finish line.

Marc Soler gives Tadej Pogačar even more firepower in mountains at Tour de France

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

This article originally appeared on Velo_News

As if Tadej Pogacar isn't dangerous enough as it is at the Tour de France , now he brings a new weapon for 2022.

Marc Soler , the Spanish climber who moved across to UAE Team Emirates from Movistar for 2022, gives Pogacar an extra wheel deep in the mountains.

Not that the Slovenian star needs it, but Soler will add a new dimension to the ever more powerful UAE Team Emirates backbench to support Pogacar across the grand tours.

“He's very strong, he's very solid, and you can see that I am happy to help him any way I can and with everything we're achieving so far,” Soler told VeloNews . “I am very happy to be on this team.

“Everything is going well right now. I have to keep working hard to be able to stay close to him and be ready whenever he might need some help .”

Pogacar: ‘I’m close to my Tour de France form’

Lefevere: ‘Pogacar is the next Merckx’

Soler: ‘It was easy to make the change’

Soler was lighting up the roads at Tirreno-Adriatico , riding hard at the front in what's a preview of what the peloton will see in the grand tours this summer.

Coming off Pogacar’s second straight yellow jersey in 2021, UAE Team Emirates beefed up its frontline defenses -- or more accurately, offenses -- during the off-season, and signed new talent across the ever-burgeoning team. In addition to Soler, Joao Almeida, and George Bennett are among eight new signings for 2022.

The 28-year-old Soler joins at an interesting point of his career. Some expected him to emerge as a possible grand tour rider, but he never truly flourished despite winning Paris-Nice in 2018.

Some high-profile blowups -- check season 1 of El Dia Menos Pensado on Netflix for highlights -- and some bad crashes kept him from shining on his own. Riding behind the likes of Nairo Quintana, Mikel Landa, and Alejandro Valverde at Movistar didn't help, either.

Soler says the move came at the right time, and the new challenge is giving him that fresh edge any pro rider needs.

"I’m very happy, very comfortable to be with UAE,” Soler said. “I am here to help the team, and everything's working well so far, with very good results across the entire team.”

UAE Team Emirates building out its bench of support riders

The way Pogacar is riding everyone off his wheel right now, at first glance it might not appear that he even needs help.

But any top GC captain needs riders who can shepherd him across multi-climb stages and bring him deep into a final. Rafal Majka, Brandon McNulty, Marc Hirschi, and Davide Formolo were all there last year.

Adding a climber with the Soler's pedigree will only make Pogacar that much harder to isolate and perhaps even attack.

"Right now I am feeling good. We did a training camp with the team, and it appears that everything is going well, let's hope we can continue on this way,” Soler said. “I’ll be giving the maximum for the team, and bringing my grain of sand.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by marc soler (@solermarc93)

Soler isn't giving up all of his personal ambitions, and even at Tirreno-Adriatico, he tried to attack in the early stages to go for a stage win before settling into a key support role for Pogacar later in the race.

Soler said he will have opportunities in smaller races or perhaps even for a stage here or there, but he knows that with a generational rider like Pogacar, there's no confusion inside the team bus about who’s the boss.

“I will have my opportunities in one-week races, but during the grand tours it's obvious that I will be with Tadej, to help him the best I can at both the Tour and the Vuelta,” Soler said. “We’re working to be 100 percent during the grand tours, but I will have my chances in one-week stage races.”

Soler signaled such races as the Volta a Catalunya, which started Monday, and Itzulia Basque Country in April, or even Tour de Suisse, where he might be able to ride for his own GC prospects.

“Then at the Tour and Vuelta, it's obvious what I have to do, and that’s work for Tadej,” Soler said.

UAE Team Emirates found a diamond in the rough when they plucked Pogacar out of the U23 ranks. The Slovenian blossomed into a WorldTour force faster than anyone could have imagined. Now the rest of the team is catching up.

Rivals know if UAE Team Emirates continue to build out its growing bench of support riders around him, Pogacar will be even harder to beat.

Marc Soler was one of many riders caught up in the spectator-caused crash at the Tour de France and now the Spaniard is considering legal action.

Soler was left with three fractures to his arms – the ulnar and radial head on the left and the radial on the right – in the mass pile-up inside 50km to go that was sparked by a fan with a cardboard sign standing in the road.

In a column for the La Vanguardia newspaper, Soler criticized the UCI and the riders’ union the CPA for failing to take measures to protect the peloton and said he was considering suing the spectator.

“I don’t know what to do, I think I will sue the spectator because it’s a whole Tour thrown away and I feel a lot of anger,” he said in the La Vanguardia newspaper.

“We have an organization, the CPA, which should defend us. They can put their hands out but do little work. And the UCI only cares about stupid measures like the one for bottles, but in serious things like our security, it doesn’t get involved. They are only for nonsense, but since the end of the month they must be doing well because they do not worry about anything else.”

Also read: Tour de France roundtable: Should ASO sue the fan who caused the stage 1 crash?

Tour de France organizer ASO has withdrawn its proposed legal action against the spectator, who was arrested by police Wednesday after an appeal for witnesses.

“The incident has been blown out of all proportion,” race director Christian Prudhomme told AFP . “So we’d like to calm things down now that the message has got across that the roadside fans need to be careful.”

Jumbo-Visma’s Tony Martin was the first member of the peloton to fall after clipping the fan’s sign. On a narrow road, the incident led to a chain reaction that felled much of the peloton.

Tightly packed together, many had nowhere to go, and some hit the tarmac very heavily. Jasha Sütterlin was forced to immediately abandon, while Soler was put back on his bike to ride to the finish.

“The fall came at a point where the road narrowed, and we were looking for positions,” said Soler. “We were going through to the front, which is the safest position in case there is an incident, and suddenly I saw the Jumbo fall to my right, and in front of me, I collided with [Mike] Teunissen.

“I flew, tumbled, and landed hard on my hands. They both hurt, as did my face where my glasses had broken and my shoulder too. I tried to stand up but couldn’t, I had no strength in my arms.

“The mechanic pulled me by the armpits, and I sat on the side of the road, I was really dizzy. There were still 50 kilometers to go. [The team] told me to try to continue but I don’t know how I did it, I couldn’t change gears or brake. When I got to the finish, I was worried about the time limit, but I couldn’t even get undressed on the bus, they had to cut them with scissors. Then when we got to the medical truck, they confirmed my injuries.”

The Tour de France abandonment is the second successive early grand tour departure for Soler this year after he left the Giro d’Italia during stage 12 following a crash.

“I am having a difficult year. First the crash at the Giro and now this. The Giro was really frustrating because it was a race that I had been preparing for a long time and I had a great opportunity. But the Tour is even worse, because it was not just a racing incident, it was because of a spectator who clearly does not like cycling. All this preparation went in the trash,” Soler said.

The Movistar rider is still hopeful of racing again this season, but he doesn’t expect there will be any more grand tours on his program in 2021.

“No surgery was necessary, and I can go without a cast if I behave well, which is what I am doing. I wear my arm in a sling and a wrist strap that immobilizes the area,” he said. “I have to spend between three and four weeks without doing anything, not even the rollers because I cannot support myself. This means losing all shape, as the body quickly adapts to rest. I hope to still [be in] a race, but I can say goodbye to the Vuelta a España.”

Texas MS 150 Bike Tour Returns To Aggieland

Texas A&M University will once again serve as the finish line for thousands of cyclists riding in the Texas MS 150 when the 40th annual charity bike tour concludes Sunday on Houston Street between Kyle Field and Aggie Park.

The two-day event benefiting people with multiple sclerosis — a condition that damages the body’s nervous system by eroding the protective coating of nerves — will run April 27-28, with a variety of routes beginning in Houston and Austin before converging in La Grange and again in College Station. Texas A&M Transportation Services is advising drivers to anticipate multiple road closures and potential delays beginning early Sunday as the riders make their way through campus.

A section of Lamar Street starting at the bell tower will be closed to drivers throughout the day, while Houston Street will remain closed from George Bush Drive to Joe Routt Boulevard. Riders will make their way down Olsen Boulevard and Old Main Drive before passing the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field on their way to the finish line. A map of the route through campus, as well as accompanying road closure and parking information, can be found at transport.tamu.edu/ms150 .
