Jay Z Brings New Material to Life at ‘Magna Carter’ Tour Kickoff
By Dan Hyman
In the nearly two decades since Jay Z first appeared on the hip-hop scene, an ex-crack-dealing Brooklynite with a sweet cadence and tragic wit, the man born Shawn Carter has worn many hats: record label head, clothier, restaurateur and most recently, sports agent. Still, as the rap icon made clear to the St. Paul crowd on the opening night of his Magna Carter World Tour – standing front-and-center, smiling as he adjusted his black leather Brooklyn Nets hat and sparkling gold chains after a nearly two-hour, tirelessly energetic performance – performing live still gives him the biggest thrill. “I’ll never get used to this shit,” he told the Xcel Energy Center crowd, after ripping through a synth-drenched rendition of “Encore” at the start of a triumphant five-song farewell to a momentous career-spanning set.
Jay Z hasn’t exactly been far from the stage in recent years – from his Watch The Throne tour with Kanye West to his Made in America performance, not to mention a string of Barclays Center shows last fall and his Legends of Summer tour with Justin Timberlake earlier this year. Amazingly though, Saturday night’s performance marked the rapper’s first Stateside show as part of a proper Jay Z tour in over four years.
See Where Jay Z Ranks Among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time
With the stage mostly to himself, he didn’t pull any punches: There was no back-and-forth vocal volley as he did with JT; no double-digit renditions of any hit singles as with West. Even the stage setup was relatively stripped-down, with its standard set of transparent neon-lit risers and massive video screens flooded all evening with recurring images of government surveillance video, drone strikes and explosions. (Jay and Barack: talk it out, dudes!) More than anything, the show was an exercise in Jay’s ability to deftly maneuver between hits – while incorporating new material off this past summer’s middling Magna Carta, Holy Grail (“Holy Grail,” “Tom Ford”) into his time-tested bounty of setlist favorites.
Editor’s picks
The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.
Jay dutifully ripped through his massive arsenal of hits, including crowd-participatory renditions of Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life classics “N***a What, N***a Who (Originator 99)” and “Hard Knock Life,” and an almost industrial-rock spin on The Black Album gem “99 Problems.” He also littered his set with a wealth of more recent smashes including “Empire State of Mind” and “On To The Next One.”
What proved more exciting, though, was the unexpected adrenaline he brought to his new material. On wax, Magna Carta generally failed to deliver the emotional goods. In concert however, the new tracks – particularly a swaggering rendition of the funk-laden “Picasso Baby,” during which Jay flashed a massive smile as he rapped “Oh, what a feeling!” and “Crown” – proved highly engaging. Many compliments are due to his stellar four-piece backing band, which on Saturday included legendary beatsmith and Magna Carta producer Timbaland on the decks. (An additional unexpected highlight of the night came midway through the show, when Jay ceded the spotlight to Timbaland for a five-minute run-through of the producer’s signature skuzzy beats and loops).
In the live arena, Jay’s ability to vary his signature stutter-step vocal cadence from one track to the next still remains his bread and butter. It was on more sparse older material then, like “Dead Presidents II” off his groundbreaking 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt, that Jay Z shined the most on Saturday with his airtight vocals – “ Who wanna bet us that we don’t touch leathers/Stack cheddars forever, live treacherous all the etceteras” – and an excellent representation of what collaborator Rick Rubin was referring to when he recently likened the rapper’s ever-evolving technique to “a solo by a jazz artist where . . . each version of it is phrased differently with different accents and high points” in Vanity Fair.
It was in such moments of simplicity on Saturday – with nothing more than a twinkling keyboard melody, a simple beat and Jay Z’s voice – that the rapper reminded us of an important fact: Despite his many offshoot business ventures, paparazzi-level fame and arena-scale shows, he remains first and foremost one of the game’s most gifted, enduring MCs.

The Downton Abbey Cruise is a slightly adapted version of our Classic England Cruise!
Sunday, Day 1 London to Hampton Court Palace
Meet a crew member at the Stafford Hotel in London at 3pm for an English Afternoon Tea, before being transferred at 4pm to the Magna Carta. On board there will be a Champagne reception and welcome whilst being moored right outside Hampton Court, the former Tudor Palace of Henry VIII, where we remain overnight. Dinner aboard.
Monday, Day 2 Hampton Court Palace to Shepperton
This morning we have ample time to really explore Hampton Court Palace, the most fabulous Tudor home, once belonging to Cardinal Wolsey until acquired by Henry VIII! We walk through Henry’s great hall and haunted gallery and see his chapel, still used for worship today and with the finest Tudor ceiling in existence. There is much more to see including the stunning privy gardens, the oldest growing grape vine and the famous maze! After lunch we enjoy our first cruise, up through Molesey Lock and following the meandering path of the river through Sunbury to our overnight mooring on Shepperton Lock. Dinner aboard.
Tuesday, Day 3 Shepperton to Windsor
This morning we cruise to Windsor before enjoying lunch on board. Our river journey takes us through Chertsey, past Penton Hook Marina and Bell Weir Lock through Runnymede where King John faced the barons in 1215 and was forced to put his seal on the Magna Carta, the document which was the very first Bill of Rights and from which our vessel takes its name. From the boat we see the Magna Carta memorial and Magna Carta Island where the sealing took place. Our afternoon excursion is to Windsor Castle. Built by William the Conqueror in 1066 and lived in for over 900 years by the Royal Family. This is the largest inhabited castle in the world. We explore the State Apartments, See Queen Mary’s Dolls House and St George’s Chapel and enjoy the far-reaching views from its elevated fortress position. Dinner aboard.
Wednesday, Day 4 Windsor to Cliveden
After breakfast we are driven to Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) Highclere Castle is one of England’s most beautiful Victorian Castles set amidst 1,000 acres of spectacular parkland. The Carnarvon family has lived at Highclere since 1679, and the current Castle stands on the site of an earlier house, which in turn was built on the foundations of the medieval palace owned by the Bishops of Winchester for some 800 years. Longstanding friend of the Carnarvon family, Julian Fellowes had Highclere Castle in mind as he wrote Downton Abbey. He often commented he wanted a house which spectacularly testified to the confidence and soaring optimism of the Edwardian period. As lunch commences on board we start cruising up to Boveney Lock, continue past the fabulous waterside homes of Bray and Maidenhead, Boulters Lock (made famous in Victorian times) and into the spectacular Cliveden reach where we have special permission to moor at the house itself. Dinner aboard.
Thursday, Day 5 Cliveden to Hurley
After breakfast we visit the little village of Cookham. Cookham ,was once described as ‘Heaven on Earth’ by artist Sir Stanley Spencer, one of England’s greatest and most eccentric painters. Much of his work was painted in and around Cookham. We visit his gallery whilst in Cookham. We then return to Cliveden for our tour there. Cliveden was once owned by the Astor family, though the original house dates back to 1666. The gardens are simply amazing and include a Parterre, Chinese water garden and topiary. We discuss the political intrigue and scandal for which Cliveden is famous!! On your return you will be served a lovely lunch and we start cruising through Bourne End and Marlow to Hurley. Once we are moored up for the night we have time to explore the ancient 11th century village including Ye Olde Belle, reputed to be the oldest inn in the country before returning to the barge. Dinner aboard.
Friday, Day 6 Hurley to Henley on Thames and Oxford
We start our last day with an early morning tour of Peter Freebody’s boatyard and watch in wonder at the traditional craftsman at work, building and restoring wooden boats as they have been done for generations. We continue the day with a morning cruise to Henley on Thames through fabulous countryside to our final mooring Remenham, a small village along the famous Henley Regatta Rowing Course. An earlier lunch followed by a 40 minute drive to Oxford. A fascinating tour of Christ Church, Oxford’s grandest college, founded twice, once by Cardinal Wolsey and then by King Henry VIII. The magnificent surroundings in which Lewis Carrol wrote Alice in Wonderland. For our final night we enjoy the Captains Farewell Dinner aboard.
Saturday, Day 7 Henley to London
Following breakfast, disembark at 9.30am and return to London or Heathrow Airport.
On alternate weeks the cruise will be in the reverse direction. This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change.

Magna carta announce major career overview.
Beautifully packaged career overview compiled in conjunction with Magna Carta founder member singer/songwriter Chris Simpson
- One of British folk’s most well-respected acoustic groups anthologised on 3CDs
- Includes The Fields of Eden album plus their 50th anniversary concert on DVD
- Booklet includes an essay by Nigel Schofield with recollections from Chris Simpson, Magna Carta leader
- Released to coincide with Magna Carta’s 2022 Wind In The Wires farewell tour
- More than four hours of recordings – superb sound & vision throughout
In 2019 Magna Carta, the acoustic group fronted by singer/songwriter Chris Simpson, celebrated their 50th anniversary. Sadly, celebrations were curtailed by the pandemic and a tour was twice postponed. Now rescheduled for Sept/Oct 2022, Repertoire are proud to present this beautifully packaged 3CD/DVD set compiled in conjunction with Chris Simpson and with an essay by broadcaster Nigel Schofield.
Comprising over four hours of recordings, it is a must for all Magna Carta fans. Formed in London and initially inspired by the stylings of Simon & Garfunkel, the group – Harrogate-born Chris Simpson (guitar, vocals), Australian Lyell Tranter (guitar, vocals) and vocalist Glen Stuart – proved such a success they would go on to record 30 albums including six gold and three silver discs.
Their blend of Prog-infused folk drew influence from Chris’ musical favourites among them Martin Carthy, Davey Graham and Alexis Korner. When Lyell returned to his native Oz, Davey Johnstone (later of Elton John’s band) stepped in. When All Is Said And Done presents a stunning career overview featuring an array of album tracks and other recordings from the 70s up to and including 2015’s magnificent The Fields Of Eden . Lauded as a masterpiece on its release, Chris Simpson’s ode to his beloved “northlands of England” is a love letter to the Yorkshire dales.
By way of a bonus, the band’s January 2020 concert at Ripley in Yorkshire – performed prior to lockdown restrictions – was filmed and appears here on DVD to complete the set.

Cruising aboard barge Magna Carta on the Royal River Thames is a study in both antique and modern lifestyles – an ancient history book with the pages still being written.
Guests are met in London at the glamorous Stafford Hotel where they enjoy an afternoon tea. Then, the modern metropolis becomes but a distant memory upon boarding Magna Carta. Captain Dominic Read is a longtime area resident and an expert in the folklore and history of the river and its inhabitants. The cruise unfolds major historic sites alongside small slices of life: gently gliding past mansions and boathouses, as well as villages that look as if Miss Marple will pop out at any minute! History comes alive at Hampton Court Palace (where Magna Carta moors), the Tudor-style palace of King Henry the 8th; Windsor Castle, home to British royalty; and Christ Church College in Oxford University, the oldest university in the English-speaking world.
Back on board, four spacious cabins with modern en-suite baths provide havens of privacy, while the comfortable deck and light-filled indoor salon become the perfect vantage points to take in the passing scene. Dining options deliciously address outdated notions about British cuisine. Magna Carta’s menus are fresh and creative, utilizing the best of locally-sourced produce, meats, and fish. A broad selection of Old and New World wines are carefully paired with the meals.
Unlike barging in other locations, it is not possible to bicycle or walk alongside the vessel as it cruises; however, once moored, active guests can disembark to explore port towns and the surrounding countryside by bicycle or on foot.

Meet your crew at the traditional champagne reception. Tonight, enjoy the first of many gourmet dinners onboard.
Welcome to Henry VIII’s Royal Palace
This morning, the immersion into “Royal England” begins in the vast palace of a most iconic monarch: Henry VIII. Discover Henry VIII’s rooms, the Royal Chapel, and the kitchen gardens on a private tour with local expert Lesley Richardson. A resident and guide of Hampton Court for over twenty years, Lesley shares dishy anecdotes and insider's secrets about famous (and infamous) palace residents! Return to the barge for an afternoon cruise. Once moored, explore the riverside path by bicycle or on foot before another gourmet dinner.
Secrets of Windsor Castle with a Noble Military Knight
This morning's cruise takes us through Runnymede where King John put his seal on the Magna Carta in 1215! This afternoon, European history comes alive at Windsor Castle, notable for its long association with the English and later British royal family. A uniformed Military Knight of Windsor introduces a “behind the scenes” tour of the castle, offering access to original art, sophisticated architecture, and royal treasure. Return to Magna Carta, where Chef is putting the final touches on a gourmet dinner fit for a King.
A Day of Monarchs, Manors, and Manners
Manors and manners are on offer today thanks to two tours of fascinating estates. Begin the British adventures with a private visit to Dorney Court, one of England's finest Tudor Manor houses, dating from around 1440. Return to the barge for an afternoon cruise to our mooring on the Clivedon Estate. After walking through the grand gardens, step inside for a tea and a “butler’s guide” to the personalities and scandals associated with over 350 years of aristocratic life at Clivedon House. Relive the day over drinks and dinner.
Welcome to One of England’s Oldest Stately Homes
Relax on deck this morning as Magna Carta glides past the enchanting scenery of the Royal River Thames. This afternoon, your Tour Guide accompanies you to Stonor Park, the seat of the Stonor family, Baron Camoys, for over 850 years. Tour this astonishingly preserved historic country home with a Stonor family member, discovering the 12th century private chapel, as well as the remains of a prehistoric stone circle. Return to the barge and explore the riverside path with a gentle pedal or leisurely stroll before tonight's delicious dinner.
A Private Tour of Highclere Castle
Regattas and rowing are foundations of the lifestyles along the Royal River Thames; this morning, a visit to Peter Freebody’s boatyard introduces craftsmen who restore vintage vessels using ancient techniques. After an early lunch, it's a but mere drive to Highclere Castle, home to many of the iconic scenes in the beloved drama "Downton Abbey". On this private tour, guests will explore the rooms, grounds, and gardens of this stately home, as well meet and greet members of the Highclere household. Back onboard, a Farewell Feast awaits.
Breakfast selections consist of freshly baked goods from a local boulangerie, along with fruit, cereal, yogurt, cheese, coffee, tea, and juice. For lunches and dinners, your onboard Chef creates regionally and seasonally inspired fare. Lunch is typically a light buffet featuring hearty salads and savory entrees, and your multi-course gourmet dinner is served with grand table settings and fine crockery, all in a festive setting. Wine pairings feature a red and a white from area vineyards, along with a cheese platter of artisanal favorites. Note these are sample menus. Bon Appetit!

On arrival guests receive a champagne welcome by the Captain and crew. Dinner on board. Monday - Henley on Thames to Hurley This morning we take a 40-minute drive to Oxford for a fascinating tour of Christ Church, Oxford’s grandest college. Unusually, it was founded twice, once by Cardinal Wolsey and then by King Henry VIII. The magnificent surroundings were where Lewis Carrol wrote Alice in Wonderland. After lunch we set sail and cruise the famous Regatta Mile. Here, every year in July rowing teams from around the world compete in front of Champagne and Pimms fueled crowds. We pass through Hambledon Lock, and onwards through stunning countryside to the medieval village of Hurley. We wander through Peter Freebody’s boatyard and watch in wonder as the traditional craftsmen build and restore classic wooden craft as they have for generations. Afterwards we have time to explore the ancient village including Ye Olde Belle, reputed to be the oldest inn in the country before returning to the barge. Dinner on board. Tuesday - Hurley to Cliveden to Cookham On select cruises only, we are driven to *Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey). Highclere Castle is one of England's most beautiful Victorian Castles set amidst 1,000 acres of spectacular parkland. After lunch we cruise through Bourne End and Marlow to Cookham followed by a visit to Stanley Spencer’s gallery and a walk around the village. Dinner on board. *The visit to Highclere Castle is only available on limited departures. Please ask at time of booking. Wednesday - Cookham to Windsor We cruise this morning through magnificent scenery into the spectacular Clivedon reach where we have special permission to moor at the house itself. Cliveden was once owned by the Astor family, though the original house dates back to 1666. The gardens are simply amazing and include a Parterre, Chinese water garden and topiary. We discuss the political intrigue and scandal for which Cliveden is famous!! Our afternoon cruise takes us through Maidenhead and Boulters Lock (made famous in Victorian times), past fabulous waterside homes in Bray and down to the heart of Windsor. We enjoy a late afternoon tour of Dorney Court. This very special home has been owned by the Palmer family for more than 450 years passing from father to son through 13 generations. King Henry VIII has stayed here and the manor is regularly used for filming including “Poirot” and “The Other Boleyn Girl” We are lucky to enjoy the house privately. Dinner on board. Thursday - Windsor to Shepperton A morning tour of Windsor Castle. Built by William the Conqueror in 1066 and a royal home for over 900 years, this is the largest inhabited castle in the world. We explore the State Apartments, Queen Mary's Dolls House and St George's Chapel and enjoy the far-reaching views from its elevated fortress position. During lunch we cruise and enjoy breath taking views of the castle and down through the fields of Runnymede. . Here in 1215 King John was forced to meet the powerful barons and seal this historic document, which took away absolute power from the King and later became the basis for the American Bill of Rights .We have the option to moor at Bell Weir Lock adjacent to a luxury spa hotel, where it is possible to visit and use the facilities including pool, sauna and steam room. Beauty therapies, massages and other treatments are available but are best booked in advance. Today’s cruising continues to our secluded overnight mooring near Shepperton. Dinner on board. Friday - Shepperton to Hampton Court Palace After breakfast we spend the entire morning cruising through countryside and the delightful riverside towns and locks of Sunbury and Molesey to our spectacular mooring right outside the gates of Hampton Court Palace. After lunch we visit this magnificent palace, the finest Tudor building in existence. We can wander around King Henry VIII's apartments and the Royal Chapel, feel the chill in the haunted gallery, view Cardinal Wolsey's closet and stroll through the Tudor kitchens. Outside, the gardens are stunning. The Great Vine, the oldest in the world still produces grapes and the world famous maze awaits. Captain’s Farewell Dinner on board. Saturday - Transfer from Hampton Court Palace to London Following breakfast, disembark the barge for your transfer to the designated drop off point in London. This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change. The itinerary is in reverse direction on alternate weeks.
MAGNA CARTA Barge Cruise Reviews
"The barge and crew are the best we've experienced to date - the entire crew were exceptional. The captain, chef and crew made it most memorable. The cabin accommodations were generous and most comfortable. The excursions were great - we would have liked more time at Oxford. We didn't realize how much we would enjoy cruising down the Thames. We so enjoyed the entire experience - their "package" of barge, itinerary, outstanding food and crew is "spot on."
Beth, your service was excellent, as always! You are one of the best travel people I have ever worked with! Your site is most effective and the quality of the pre-trip information was thorough and helpful. You covered all the bases. I wish you handled other travels beyond barging! Many, many thanks to you, Beth, for arranging such a wonderful barge holiday for us!"
