Key storylines

Serena Williams is playing her final tournament: Earlier this month, the 23-time major champion and six-time US Open champion announced she would hang up her racquets after the US Open . Her opening round match in New York will be her fifth match of the season. She earned her first win in more than a year a the National Bank Open in Toronto, where she defeated Nuria Parrizas Diaz in straight sets. She comes into the US Open off a 6-4, 6-0 loss to defending champion Emma Raducanu.

Emma Raducanu under pressure: Raducanu comes into New York off a confidence-boosting week at the Western & Southern Open, where she beat Williams and Victoria Azarenka. She's defending 2,040 points, but she has already acknowledged she's looking forward to life after the US Open . Anything short of a title defense will see her ranking drop, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for Raducanu. As she's said, she's keen for a clean slate.

Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff lead the American charge: Pegula and Gauff have had strong summers, with Pegula making back-to-back quarterfinals in Toronto and Cincinnati and Gauff posting strong wins to make back-to-back quarterfinals in San Jose and Toronto. The duo also sit at No.3 on the Porsche Race to the WTA Finals Doubles Leaderboard after capturing their second WTA 1000 title of the season in Toronto.

Gauff provides fans with optimistic injury update

Three former champions to watch : Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu and Sloane Stephens know how to win in New York. While their results over the US Open Series haven't stood out on paper, there have been signs that a deep run could be coming. Andreescu did well to make the quarterfinals of her home tournament in Toronto, while Stephens has shown good form in some tight losses.

Iga Swiatek is playing the long game

Simona Halep and Caroline Garcia primed for a run : Halep has won majors on the natural surfaces but has yet to crack through at a hard-court Slam. Given the focus and form that vaulted her to the Toronto title , that could change this year. Meanwhile, Garcia flourished in the quick conditions in Cincinnati, becoming the first qualifier to ever win a WTA 1000 title , beating three Top 10 players along the way.

The French Open , also known as Roland Garros, is held annually in Paris, France. It is the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, and it is played on clay courts. The Australian Open is held annually in Melbourne, Australia. It is the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, and it is played on hard courts. The Australian Open is known for its hot weather, which can sometimes exceed 40°C, making it challenging for players to stay hydrated and focused.

Wimbledon Championships is held annually in London, England. It is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, and it is played on grass courts. Tennis Courts and Locations

When it comes to tennis, the location and court surface play a significant role in the game’s outcome. There are three main types of tennis court surfaces: hard courts, grass courts, and clay courts.

They provide a fast and predictable bounce, making them suitable for aggressive players. The most famous grass court tournament is Wimbledon, held in late June and early July at the All England Club in London.

Clay courts are made of crushed brick, shale, or stone and provide a slower and higher bounce. They require a more defensive style of play, with players having to slide and hit with topspin. The most famous clay court tournament is the French Open, held in late May and early June at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris.

Apart from these three main types of tennis courts, there are also other surfaces like carpet, which has been phased out of professional tennis, and the red clay courts at Monte Carlo.

What Are The Four Tennis Grand Slams?

What Are The 4 Major Tennis Grand Slam Tournaments

There are four Grand Slam tournaments that take place annually in the world of professional tennis. These four major tournaments are the Australian Open , the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.  The Summer Olympic Games are often considered a “fifth” Grand Slam tournament, but tennis players need only win the main four in a year to achieve a Grand Slam.

Table of Contents

The australian open, the french open, the us open, the “fifth” slam: the summer olympic games.

The Australian Open occurs at the end of January each year and is the first of the four yearly Grand Slam tournaments.  This tournament is played in Melbourne, Australia, at Melbourne Park.

The Australian Open dates back to 1905 (when it was called the Australasian Championship), and its current form was established in 1968. The individual winners of the 2023 Australian Open were Novak Djokovic (Men’s Singles) and Aryna Sabalenka (Women’s Singles).

The French Open (also called Roland-Garros) is played at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, France.  It begins in late May each year and extends into early June. Stade Roland-Garros is most famous for its clay court, which is bright orange and causes balls to bounce higher than the more-commonly used grass and hardcourt surfaces of today.

The French Open was first established in 1891 as a tournament exclusive to members of French tennis clubs, but was expanded in 1925 to include all amateur players, at which point it was considered a major international tournament. The individual winners of the 2022 French Open were Rafael Nadal (Men’s Singles) and Iga Świątek (Women’s Singles).

Wimbledon

Wimbledon takes place in London, England at the very end of June each year and concludes one to two weeks into the month of July.  The individual winners of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships were Novak Djokovic (Men’s Singles) and Elena Rybakina (Women’s Singles).

On July 9th, 1877, 22 men showed up at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club to play in a tennis tournament advertised as “open to all amateurs,” who were encouraged to bring their own rackets and pay an “eleven-shilling entrance fee.” Today, each individual tournament during Wimbledon has 128 players, and the tournament’s winner is awarded over 2 million euros.

The US Open is the final Grand Slam in the calendar year, taking place from the last Monday of August to the middle of September.  This tournament was first held in 1881 in Newport, Rhode Island. Like the French Open, only club members were allowed to enter into the first years of the US Open.

The US Open became open to all amateurs by the end of the 1880s. Today, the tournament takes place at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens. The individual winners of the 2022 US Open were Carlos Alcaraz (Men’s Singles) and Iga Świątek (Women’s Singles).

Although there are only four annual grand slams, the tournament that takes place during the Summer Olympic Games is often called the “fifth” slam.  Tennis was part of the Olympic games from 1896 until 1924, when it was dropped.

However, the Games picked tennis back up in 1988. These days, there are five grand slams every four years. If a player wins all four slams and Olympic Gold in the same calendar year, they complete the “Golden Grand Slam.”

How many Grand Slams are there in tennis?

There are four Grand Slam tournaments in tennis: the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.  These four tournaments are played annually, in that order, and are considered the most prestigious competitions in the sport. However, the Summer Olympics, which are played every four years, are sometimes referred to as the “Fifth Slam.”

Who has the most Women’s Singles Grand Slam wins?

Margaret Court holds the record for most Grand Slam wins in Women’s Singles tennis with 24 wins.  She won the Australian Open 11 times, Wimbledon three times, the French Open five times, and the US Open five times.

Who has the most Men’s Singles Grand Slam wins?

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic currently share the record for most Grand Slam wins in men’s singles, with 22 total Grand Slam tournament wins each.  Nadal, who hails from Spain, won his first Grand Slam title at the 2005 French Open. In all, Nadal has won two Australian Opens, 14 French Opens, two Wimbledon Championships, and four US Opens. Nadal’s most recent Grand Slam wins were at the Australian and French Opens of 2022. Novak Djokovic tied Nadal with his own 22nd Grand Slam win at the 2023 Australian Open.

Which top tennis tournament is the most prestigious?

Most people would agree that Wimbledon is the most prestigious tennis tournament . Of the four grand slam tournaments in professional tennis (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open), Wimbledon always seems to attract the most attention. It seems to be a favorite major tennis tournament of the players too; American Sam Querrey notably referred to it as the best tournament , comparing it to golf’s iconic Masters.

Best Major Tennis Tournaments to Attend

Wimbledon – all england club, london (grand slam event).

It only makes sense to start the list of top tennis tournaments with the most famous (and prestigious) tennis tournament in the world. Wimbledon dates back to the year 1877 when the first tournament was played on the grass lawns of the All England Club just outside of London, England.

major tennis tournaments of Wimbledon

Wimbledon is still played on grass courts, one of many long-standing traditions of this historic tournament. Appearances by the Royal Family (and other celebrities), fresh strawberries and cream, and the famous all-white dress code are other traditions that have become associated with the tournament.

One of the four major tennis tournaments (also known as grand slams), Wimbledon takes place over two weeks in early summer. It attracts a long list of the best tennis players in the world and has hosted some of the sport’s most iconic matches on the All England Club’s famous Centre Court.

US Open – National Tennis Center, New York (Grand Slam Event)

The last Grand Slam of the season, the US Open is also the most famous professional US tennis tournament. The US Open was first played in 1881 as the US National Championship. What makes it one of the best tennis tournaments to attend? Well for starters, it offers a different and unique atmosphere than the other majors. It’s lively, fun, and exuberant, just like its host city, New York.

top tennis tournaments ar the US National Tennis Center

This top tennis tournament takes place at the US National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY, though many fans will stay in Manhattan and take advantage of the city’s incredible dining, shopping, and entertainment when they’re not checking out the tennis. Just like Wimbledon, you’ll find no shortage of celebrity presence at the US Open.

The US Open plays out each year in late August/early September and we think it’s the perfect way to wrap up the summer.

Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne (Grand Slam Event)

The first of the four major tennis tournaments on the calendar, the Australian Open is a bucket list event for fans around the world. It’s one of the largest sporting events in the Southern hemisphere and has taken place at Melbourne Park since 1988, though the tournament dates back to 1905.

biggest tennis tournaments Australian open

The Australian Open is played on a hard-court surface and has been dominated by Novak Djokovic in recent years. He’s won the tournament ten times since 2008, giving him the record of most singles titles at the event .

As the first grand slam of the year, excitement is always high for this famous Melbourne tennis event and as one of the highest attended, it definitely makes the list of best tennis tournaments.

French Open – Roland Garros, Paris (Grand Slam Event)

The French Open is different from the other major tennis tournaments in that it is the only one played on clay courts. Clay is known to be a difficult surface to play on , due to the slower moving ball. Some players seem to excel on the clay, most notably Rafael Nadal , who won has an incredible fourteen French Open Championships.

best tennis tournaments French open

One of the best parts about the French Open is the amazing city of Paris. There’s a reason it is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world . With its charming cafés, amazing food, great hotels, and stunning architecture, it makes an ideal backdrop for one of the best tennis tournaments in the world.

The 2024 French Open tennis tournament dates are May 26th to June 9th. With a history dating back 132 years, this tournament has been home to hundreds of memorable moments.

Experience Roland Garros in Person!

The Summer Games – Roland Garros, Paris

The Summer Games is unique in that it’s more than just a major tennis tournament. The best thing about the Summer Games tennis tournament is that fans can take in so many other incredible sporting events in one city surrounded by an incomparable atmosphere.

Tennis made its first Summer Games appearance at the inaugural event in 1896 but was later dropped in 1924. It returned in 1988 and has remained in the lineup ever since.

The 2024 Summer Games are in Paris, France from July 26 to August 11th. The Summer Games tennis tournament will be played at Roland Garros, home of the French Open. With just nine days to complete this famous tennis tournament (and players playing for national pride) the action will be intense.

When tennis fans aren’t checking out the tennis action, they can watch the best athletes in the world compete in 31 other sports or explore the incredible host country of France.

BNP Paribas Open – Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Indian Wells

There are many reasons we consider the BNP Paribas Open to be one of the top tennis tournaments. The first is, of course, the tennis itself. This major tennis tournament attracts the top players in the world, and is a favorite with fans as well. It regularly draws over 400,000 fans with 441,983 fans experiencing the tournament in 2023.

Another draw of the BNP Paribas Open is its location. The tournament refers to itself as “Tennis Paradise” and it’s hard to argue that. The event takes place in Indian Wells, in the Palm Springs area of California. This stunning travel destination offers luxury resorts, world-class golf, incredible shopping and dining, high-end spas, and plenty to appease the nature lovers. It also boasts wonderful weather, the perfect spot for a late winter getaway.

ATP Finals – Pala Alpitour, Turin

The ATP Finals are another top tennis tournament. The ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Finals date back to 1970, though it has gone through a few different names and versions since then. From 2009 to 2021 the tournament was held at O2 Stadium in London, before moving to its current location in Turin.

The ATP Finals follow a different format than the grand slams, which use a knock-out/bracket system. This event follows a group stage format. Each player is put into a group of four and plays each other player in his group. The top two from each group move on to a semi-final and then the championship final match.

WTA Finals – TBD

The professional women have their own major tournament to cap off their season. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour concludes with the WTA Finals. The 2022 tournament took place in Fort Worth, Texas; the 2023 tournament is expected to take place in Shenzhen, China.

Similar to the ATP Finals, the tournament is played as a group-stage/round-robin format, followed by the semi-finals and finals. In 2019, the WTA Finals made history by offering the biggest prize money in the sport’s history at the time, with a possible $4.75 million for the winner. To win the full amount, the winner would need to go undefeated in the tournament. In the end, singles winner Ashleigh Barty walked away with a cool $4.42 million .

Laver Cup – Rogers Arena, Vancouver

Named after popular Australian tennis pro Rod Laver, the Laver Cup is a relative newcomer to the tennis scene. The inaugural tournament took place in 2017 and it has been held annually since then, with the exception of 2020.

The Laver Cup is a weekend tournament that pits players from Europe against players from the rest of the world. Each of the two teams (Team Europe and Team World) are comprised of six players: three that qualify based on their ranking and three that are chosen by team captains. John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg have served as team captains since the tournament began.

The location of the Laver Cup alternates between Europe and the rest of the world, with the 2023 tournament taking place in Vancouver. It’s a fun event and it’s always played on an indoor court, or one with a retractable roof, so there’s no worry about getting rained out.

Emma Raducanu is not guaranteed automatic entry into the French Open main draw despite using her protected ranking of 103.

The 21-year-old is currently fifth on the alternates list for Roland-Garros and therefore requires five players to withdraw before the start of the second Grand Slam of the year, otherwise she will need to be awarded a wild card spot or have to go through qualifying.

Raducanu helped send Great Britain into the Billie Jean King Cup Finals with a 3-1 victory over France at the weekend, earning an impressive three-set victory over Caroline Garcia before defeating Diane Parry in a pulsating contest that lasted two hours and 52 minutes.

Andy Murray is on the entry list for the men's singles, despite currently being out with an ankle injury.

His team have confirmed the 36-year-old will not have surgery on the injury he suffered as the Miami Open in March, but there remains no date yet for his return to competition.

The three-time Grand Slam champion is now out of a walking boot and Sky Sports News understands his rehab is going well.

Murray has only played at Roland-Garros once since career-saving hip surgery in 2019.

Raducanu: I'm playing the best tennis of my life

Raducanu feels she is playing the "best tennis of her life" after sending Great Britain into the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Seville later this year.

Raducanu

"Tennis-wise I have improved because I feel like I am playing the best tennis of my career and my life," Raducanu told BBC Sport .

"And emotionally, mentally, for me to come through the moments that I did the last few days, it took a lot of strong character, especially when the entire stadium is pretty much against you. I can just take a lot of positivity and I really enjoyed this week.

"To come through the moments that I did the last two days it took a strong character when the whole stadium is pretty much against you."

Raducanu trailed Garcia by a set and a break before completing a stunning 3-6 6-3 6-2 comeback victory, following that up with another epic 4-6 6-1 7-6 (7-1) win over Parry to clinch the team's finals spot.

"To be able to put two matches like that back-to-back, three sets on clay against really tough opponents, it's just testament to the work we've been doing," she said in an on-court interview.

"I knew it would pay off eventually, so I'm very pleased this weekend it was able to show."

Thanasi Kokkinakis Australian Open

Thanasi Kokkinakis and Zizou Bergs faced each other in the Sarasota final, which was a de facto play-off for one of the last Roland Garros main draw spots. Meanwhile, Yasutaka Uchiyama ended a long title drought and Jozef Kovalik picked up his second Challenger title in the past 3 weeks. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard was also unstoppable at altitude again with Stefano Napolitano surprising in the Madrid final by beating Leandro Riedi. Read back on last week’s action:

Challenger Tour Weekly Recap

Uchiyama made back-to-back semifinals in Burnie at the beginning of the season, but had to wait until Busan to make his first Challenger final in almost three years (Mallorca 2021). The Japanese took down Paul Jubb from a set down (and briefly a break down in the decider), before taking on James Duckworth in a semifinal thriller. The Australian top seed was fighting to secure his Roland Garros main draw spot, but Uchiyama found the key backhand pass and beat him 7-6(4) in the third.

Seong-chan Hong had to battle it out against some very exciting young talent in the fourth quarter of the draw in Busan, beating Otto Virtanen, Mark Lajal, and Coleman Wong to make the semifinals. The South Korean is quietly enjoying a great season with Busan becoming his third Challenger final of 2024 (Nonthaburi-3, Bangalore), perhaps with a bit less pressure on his shoulders now that he’s joining the army in December for compulsory 18 months of service (same as Soon-woo Kwon, who gave him a walkover in the semifinals).

Uchiyama might be past his peak but he still has that amazing feel for the ball and timing, especially when he moves forward into the court. He can’t avoid some easy misses though and despite being up 5-3 in the opener, he soon faced two break points at 5-6 15-40. Saving them with unreturned serves and Hong starting slow in the tiebreak was a real turning point for the match as Uchiyama claimed his sixth Challenger title (first since 2019) 7-6 6-3. He returns to the top 200 after 26 months as both finalists are also scheduled for Gwangju next week.

Leandro Riedi took some time off after a brilliant indoor swing (which ended with two losses though) and hit the tour again with renewed energy in Madrid. The 600-700m altitude at this venue was a brilliant fit for his aggressive playstyle as well. He was able to take down the prodigy Joao Fonseca in the quarterfinals before getting engaged in a brilliant battle with Jurij Rodionov. Riedi was eventually too strong in the deciding-set tiebreak and made his first clay-court final at any level.

Stefano Napolitano ended a 7,5-year Challenger Tour title drought in Bangalore in February, but entering Madrid he only had one win under his belt since. The quicker clay conditions in Madrid were very much to his liking though as he didn’t drop a set on the way to the final, only getting taken to a tiebreak each by Vit Kopriva and Marc-Andrea Huesler. Mikhail Kukushkin retired at 2-6 1-4 in their semifinal clash, struggling to recover from his almost four-hour-long match with Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

While Riedi definitely had the easy power advantage, Napolitano did well to keep him honest and was striking the ball as cleanly as his young opponent. The Italian didn’t let the breathtaking shots coming from the other side of the net get to him and was counter-punching effectively. The level he brought to the court on the day was very sharp and he got the reward with a 6-3 6-3 win and his third Challenger title (second this year already). He also broke his career-high from 2017 to debut in the Top 150. Both finalists had to withdraw from ATP Tour qualifying events next week with Napolitano also picking up a special exempt for Oeiras instead.

Zsombor Piros was eyeing a Top 100 debut when he picked up the title in Cherbourg in February, but only grabbing three wins in the next five events meant that he couldn’t get there before having to defend his points from back-to-back trophies in 2023, the first one of them being Split. The Hungarian once again had a great time at this venue, making the final for the third year in a row. On the way there, he only dropped one set in the opening round to Nerman Fatic.

Kovalik claimed the title in Zadar recently and came back to Croatia hungry for more after playing just one match in Naples in the meantime. He had to keep up his strong form, facing three former Top 100 players in a row (Quentin Halys, Stefano Travaglia, Benjamin Bonzi). Only the Frenchman was able to push him to a deciding set as Kovalik maintained his disposition from Zadar and locked up a second Challenger final in his last three events.

Kovalik looked like he was about to roll over Piros at 6-4 3-0, taking five games in a row and beginning to break through the Hungarian’s defenses. His opponent fought back though and made this one a real battle all the way until the end, but the Slovak stood strong and kept playing his game. Kovalik claimed his eighth Challenger title (second in 2024) 6-4 5-7 7-5 and isn’t far out the Top 100 in the ATP Race. Both finalists are scheduled for Oeiras next week, Kovalik with a special exempt after withdrawing from ATP 250 Bucharest qualifying.

Bergs had one thing in mind going into Sarasota this week – getting the title would mean a Top 100 debut and getting automatic entry to Roland Garros main draw. The Belgian had missed out on a couple of opportunities like this before and he ensured he would get another one by advancing to the final. Mitchell Krueger and Tennys Sandgren took him to a deciding set with the latter even briefly going up a break in the third.

Kokkinakis was also going for the goal of making Roland Garros main draw but with a slightly easier task with the final run already putting him on the verge of that feat. His Sarasota excellence was mostly built on going 4-0 in tiebreaks in his first four matches, including two against Gabriel Diallo. He even went down 0-2 in the third set against the Canadian, but managed to recover and make his first Challenger final in 14 months.

Bergs fell behind an early break in the opening set and couldn’t make up for it in time despite a few chances. But the momentum was on his side as he leveled easily and was entering the decider with positive energy. Kokkinakis smelled blood though when the Belgian started feeling some nerves at the beginning of the third set and never let it go, claiming his sixth Challenger title 6-3 1-6 6-0 to earn his main draw spot at Roland Garros and likely deny Bergs the same feat. He intends to travel to the ATP 250 in Bucharest next, while the runner-up will be defending his title in Tallahassee .

Nicolas Mejia claimed his maiden Challenger title during this Mexican swing in San Luis Potosi on clay courts and after an early loss in Mexico City, he had to qualify for the main draw in Morelos. After coming through a tough battle against doubles specialist Ryan Seggerman, the opening round of the main event had Mejia win the last 11 games to beat Zachary Svajda 0-6 6-3 6-0. It really sparked his run going forward as he took down Maxime Cressy in two tiebreaks in the semifinals.

Mpetshi Perricard went 5-0 in tiebreaks on the way to the Morelos final, posting some incredible serve numbers like 40/40 on first serve and 46% ace rate against Maxime Janvier (avenging his Mexico City defeat from the week before). Against Adam Walton he upped that ace count even more to (31), but had to take down the Australian in the deciding set. Mpetshi Perricard won the now-discontinued Leon Challenger in this part of the season last year.

Mpetshi Perricard only had to save one break point in the entire match, but besides the serving he was also able to string together a few nice returns in both 5-all games. Especially in the second set Mejia also helped out with some poor execution on the volleys. Mpetshi Perricard raised his ace count for the week to 116 and claimed his third Challenger title 7-5 7-5 as both finalists will be playing Acapulco next, the runner-up thanks to a special exempt.

Ben Shelton Becomes Highest Ranked American Male Tennis Player for First Time in Career

  • Author: Madison Williams

At 21 years old, Ben Shelton is already adding another accomplishment to his resume by becoming the highest-ranked American male tennis player at No. 14 in this week's ATP rankings.

This is also the highest ranking of Shelton's young career. He began the 2023 season at No. 96 in the world, but his achievements over the past year helped propel him to the top 15 in the world.

Shelton surpassed Taylor Fritz for the top American ranking, who now sits at No. 15. Fritz held the title for over a year .

The Atlanta native most recently played at the ATP Houston tournament, winning the title over fellow American, Frances Tiafoe. This was just the second title won in Shelton's career.

Last year was the breakout season for Shelton , especially after he faced World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open semifinals. He beat Tiafoe and another American Tommy Paul on his run to the semifinals. Before that, he lost to Paul in the Australian Open quarterfinals in Jan. 2023.
