Our Top Destinations For African Travel in December

Travel Tips

December means warm summer weather in the Southern Hemisphere, which also coincides with some of the best safari, beach and holiday times. Africa is home to some incredible places to visit and as most of Africa’s top destinations book out over a year in advance, such is the huge demand and limited availability of African travel, booking well in advance is always a good idea. So if your travel bug is itching – here are our top 5 destinations for African travel in December.

1. Sabi Sand, Kruger National Park – South Africa

George folgt einer Leopardin durch den südafrikanischen Busch

The pinnacle of South Africa’s safari offering, this private reserve shares an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park and offers the best wildlife experience in Southern Africa. The Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve is famed for its intimate leopard sightings, if these elusive spotted creatures are on your sightings list, there is nowhere else better on earth to witness them in all their glory.

Our favourite property: Londolozi

africa december trip

The Sabi Sand has an embarrassment of award-winning lodges, and you would be hard-pressed to find better anywhere. Among our personal favourites is Londolozi.

Londolozi’s name comes from the Zulu meaning “protector of all living things”. This reserve truly embraces its namesake’s philosophy as one of South Africa’s pioneers in long-term nature conservation. Home to the Big 5 and renowned as a predator’s paradise, Londolozi allows guests to observe wildlife on bush walks and twice-daily game drives. The different camps and lodges cater for a variety of guests from honeymooners to families. Greet the day with a yoga class in the bush or wade in swimming pools overlooking the landscape beyond. Dine al fresco while the canopy of stars in the night sky twinkles overhead.

2. Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

The amazing gorillas of Rwanda

Gorilla Trekking is a once in a lifetime opportunity and Volcanoes National Park is the “birthplace” of gorilla trekking. Rwanda is home to over half of the world’s mountain gorillas and possibly the best place to view these animals. Planning a trip to Rwanda would normally have to be done between eight & twelve months in advance – due to the high demand and the low volume of trekking permits that are issued. Take advantage of this unique opportunity and book your gorilla trekking now!

Our Favourite property: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest

One&Only Gorilla's Nest - Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

One&Only Gorilla’s Nest provides enriching experiences and enchanting escapes; immersed in raw, Rwandan beauty that awakes a wild spirit of adventure. An intimate collection of free-standing forest lodges and spacious suites sit suspended over sprawling, fragrant gardens – enticing sleepy explorers. Attractive amenities range from inviting fireplaces, viewing decks, al fresco showers and standalone baths; to secluded gardens, large lounges, private catering kitchens, personal chefs and even a butler! Breathe easy as you enjoy a seamless connection with the natural world from your own secluded sanctuary. Amongst the swaying eucalyptus trees, framed by atmospheric volcanic vistas – you will find that the One&Only Gorilla’s Nest is more than just a place to sleep.

3. Cape Town, South Africa

Table Mountain Aerial View, Cape Town, South Africa

Among the very best places for African travel in December is Cape Town. This magical destination is the playground of leisure-lovers, adventurer seekers and jetsetters alike. Famous for its flat-topped mountains, white sandy beaches, bountiful vineyards, waddling penguins and bustling waterfront, it’s not hard to see why the Mother City is consistently ranked among the world’s best cities. There is so much to see and do in Cape Town that every stay leaves visitors longing to return.

Our favourite property: Camissa House

Camissa House - Cape Town, South Africa

The options are endless, but our favourite is undoubtedly Camissa House . Winner of South Africa’s Leading Design Hotel in the 2021 World Travel Awards, it boasts possibly the most captivating views of Table Mountain, the Atlantic Ocean and the city of Cape Town.

A truly extraordinary luxury boutique hotel, Camissa House celebrates the true essence of Cape Town, the unique floral diversity and natural beauty it holds. Nothing has been overlooked in designing this modern masterpiece. Camissa House has eight rooms with a maximum of 16 guests, so you can be assured an intimate, secluded affair. Guests have a dedicated butler, tour desk, pool, roof-top bar and opulent high tea – you could be forgiven for not wanting to leave the hotel at all. The true spectacle, however, is found in Cape Town’s lauded diversions; majestic Table Mountain at your doorstep, the idyllic beaches, award-winning restaurants and scenic Winelands Region.

4. Zanzibar, Tanzania

Eine Hängematte zwischen zwei Palmen an einem weißen Sandstrand auf Sansibar

The superb beaches and warm, tranquil waters of Zanzibar await you. With a range of luxury seaside resorts to choose from, it creates the ultimate island getaway. Made up of a chain of islands off the coast of Tanzania this is a tropical paradise. Centuries ago, the island was an important area for the spice trade, before falling under the rule of Arab sultans who reigned over the islands for several years, integrating with the local Swahili. This mix of cultures creates a fascinating essence that you can feel in the cuisine, architecture and local customs.

Stone Town, littered with Indo-Arabian architecture, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When not languidly lounging on the island’s impeccable beachfront, visitors can wander the narrow labyrinth of streets that make up the town. Or venture to the Forodhani Gardens’ night market on the waterfront across from the House of Wonders, and taste the local street food.

Our favourite property: Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa

Zanzibar White Sands Villas & Spa - Zanzibar

Situated on Paje Beach on the Zanzibar’s east coast lies Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa . Unwind in the warm Indian Ocean waters and walk along pristine beaches that run along the length of the resort.

Nature abounds, both above and below the waves, in lush forests and vibrant coral reefs. Choose to snorkel, kite surf or swim in the waves. The hotel’s luxury facilities include spa treatments, a swimming pool and a children’s playground.

5. Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa

Dinner under a acacia tree

Tucked away in the northern reaches of South Africa, Tswalu Kalahari offers a safari experience unmatched anywhere in the world. With clear blue skies, golden and crimson sunsets, green grass and intense ruby dunes, a trip to Tswalu in December is what dreams are made of. All bookings for December will receive their own private guide and safari vehicle. If you are dreaming of an exclusive & intimate safari experience, nothing comes close to Tswalu. The diversity of wildlife on offer at this private reserve is something you won’t find at other parks. Here you can find the black-maned Kalahari lions, meerkats, Cape foxes and pangolin as well as other traditional safari animals.

Our favourite property: Tswalu Motse Lodge

Swimming pool at Tswalu Motse Lodge

Tswalu Motse Lodge is an oasis surrounded by vast open spaces and red desert soil. Guests spend days searching for the wildlife that inhabits the reserve, including lesser-known species such as the snow wolf, pangolin and aardvark, which are regular visitors.

Tswalu Motse accommodates guests in nine ‘Legaes’, which is a Tswana word meaning “small house”. Built from stone, red sand clay and thatch, each « Legae » boasts an en-suite bathroom, an open fire, a private terrace with stunning views of the Kalahari.

Is December a good time to go on safari?

Absolutely! December is a wonderful time to go on a safari in Africa. Here are some of the reasons why:

Wildlife births

Another captivating aspect of December safaris lies in the opportunity to witness the birth of new life within the animal kingdom . This particular month sees the arrival of offspring across numerous species, including elephants and lions .

As you venture through the African landscapes, you may be fortunate enough to witness the tender moments when these young creatures take their very first steps in the wild . The sight of baby animals navigating their surroundings with curiosity and vulnerability is nothing short of remarkable.

Improved wildlife viewing

As vegetation thins out due to the dry season, wildlife becomes more visible and easier to spot. With water becoming scarce, animals tend to gather around water sources, providing excellent opportunities for observing a variety of species in their natural habitats.

Birdwatcher's delight

In December, bird enthusiasts are in for a special treat as this month marks the arrival of many migratory bird species to Africa. These birds undertake impressive journeys across continents to find suitable habitats during the colder months in their breeding regions.

Different parts of Africa welcome specific species, which are adapted to thrive in particular habitats. Wetlands become temporary homes for waterfowl and waders, grasslands host various raptors and ground-nesting species, while forests resonate with the calls of songbirds and canopy-dwelling birds. This dynamic interplay between migratory birds and resident species.

What is the weather like in december for a safari.

In December, the weather you’ll experience during your safari adventure depends on where you’re headed. This month typically marks the onset of the dry season in many renowned safari destinations, bringing about varying climatic conditions across the diverse regions of Africa.

Typically, you can expect warm and inviting temperatures in most safari areas. Daytime weather ranges from comfortably mild to pleasantly hot, creating an ideal environment for engaging in outdoor activities like thrilling game drives. There is also a noticeable decrease in rainfall compared to previous months. This reduction means you’re far less likely to encounter heavy showers or the challenges of navigating muddy paths, making both travel and wildlife observation much smoother.

However, keep in mind that Africa spans a vast expanse with an array of climates:

  • East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania) revels in warm temperatures and minimal rainfall, making it the prime window for safaris in iconic locales such as the Maasai Mara and Serengeti.
  • Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe) similarly enjoys dry conditions, creating an optimal setting for game-watching in celebrated parks like Kruger and Chobe.
  • In desert regions like Namibia , daytime temperatures can soar, but evenings bring cooler air, giving you chance to admire unique desert landscapes and wildlife that has adapted to such an environment.

Staying updated on the local weather forecasts for your chosen destination is a savvy move, ensuring you’re well-prepared for your journey.

Christmas Safari in Africa

What is it like to go on safari at Christmas?

Spending Christmas on safari is a magical experience that blends the wonder of the wilderness with the spirit of the holiday season.

Despite being far from home, many safari lodges and camps go the extra mile to create a festive atmosphere for guests. Decorations such as local crafts, tree ornaments inspired by African animals, and traditional elements typically adorn living and dining areas.

Many also arrange special Christmas celebrations for their guests. This could include festive meals, traditional dances, and even gift exchanges. In some cases, Christmas meals are often enjoyed outdoors (weather-dependent, of course!). Imagine dining under the open African sky, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the warmth of a campfire…

While on your trip, you could enquire about visiting local communities to gain insight into local cultures and traditions and how they celebrate the festive season. You might have the opportunity to participate in the celebrations and learn about their own holiday customs.

Where to go on safari in December

If you’re considering a safari adventure in December, there are plenty of destinations across Africa that we recommend to make the best of your trip at this time of the year. Here are some top places to consider for your December safari:

Maasai Mara National Reserve

best time to see great migration

The Maasai Mara, especially in December, emerges as a top destination for those seeking an exceptional safari experience. This time of the year offers a harmonious blend of wildlife encounters, holiday cheer, and the unique cultural tapestry of the Maasai people.

One of the standout features of visiting the Maasai Mara in December is the fantastic wildlife viewing opportunity. As the dry season unfolds, your chances of spotting iconic species such as lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards, and rhinos—the famed “Big Five”—are greatly heightened.

You may also be lucky enough to witness the tail end of the wildebeest migration . While the main migration typically occurs from July to October, pockets of wildebeest and zebra herds may still be traversing the Mara in search of grazing land and water sources. December also marks the arrival of migratory bird species to the Maasai Mara. This presents a treat for bird enthusiasts, as the Mara’s avian population becomes adorned with vibrant colors and diverse species.

If you have always dreamed of having an up, close, and personal wildlife encounter, visiting the Masai Mara should be on the bucket list. Why not book our 4-day trip over the festive season?

Okavango Delta

Bostwana in December

December in Botswana’s Okavango Delta marks the beginning of the enchanting green season. The landscape awakens with vibrant greens as plants flourish following the rains.

One of the most anticipated aspects of this season is the arrival of migratory birds from the northern hemisphere, which coincides with the birthing period of numerous herbivores, including baby impalas and wildebeests.

During this time, embarking on boat safaris becomes a favored way to explore the delta’s intricate waterways, channels, and floodplains. From the comfort of your boat, you’re treated to a fresh perspective of the diverse ecosystem in the park. Keep your camera ready for unexpected encounters – whether it be elephants or antelopes enjoying a leisurely drink at the water’s edge or crocodiles basking lazily in the sun.

Serengeti National Park

Tanzania Safari in December

In the early days of December, Serengeti National Park in Tanzania becomes a stage for a remarkable natural phenomenon: the start of the wildebeest migration. This event is concentrated in the northern part of the park and offers a fascinating opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to observe both the migratory herds and the interactions between predators and prey.

Again, in the northern Serengeti, you have the chance to witness predator-prey dynamics up close. Carnivores like lions, cheetahs, and leopards are drawn to the migratory herds, presenting an opportunity to witness their hunting strategies in action. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers. A variety of bird species (both resident and migratory) can be spotted during this time.

If this type of safari adventure is right up your street, why not check out our 6-day Serengeti Safari !

Tarangire National Park

Giraffes in Africa in December

Tarangire National Park might stand in the shadow of its more famous counterpart, the Serengeti, but when December arrives, Tarangire transforms into a hidden gem of wildlife encounters.

The Serengeti typically draws more crowds, but this park offers an intimate and less busy safari experience . In turn, you’ll be able to fully engage with the sights and sounds of nature, free from distraction .

The Tarangire River takes center stage in this national park, where a mesmerizing gathering of wildlife takes place. Imagine elephants , giraffes , zebras , and an array of antelope species converging along its shores, seeking refreshment and relief from the hot sun.

South Africa

Kruger national park.

South Africa in December

December emerges as an exceptionally enticing month to visit South Africa’s Kruger National Park. First and foremost, it marks the peak of the summer season in the southern hemisphere. The comfortable temperatures and extended daylight hours provide visitors with ample opportunities to engage in outdoor activities . Game drives remain a cornerstone of the experience, offering the chance to traverse the park’s diverse landscapes and come face-to-face with the Big Five and an array of other remarkable species. Guided walks led by experienced rangers provide a more intimate connection to nature, allowing visitors to absorb the finer details of the ecosystem, from the intricate flora to the smaller creatures that often elude the casual observer.

While the allure of the park’s diverse wildlife is a year-round phenomenon, December unveils a unique spectacle due to its convergence with the dry season. This season sees animals from across the park gather around waterholes, providing an exceptional opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to witness a vibrant tapestry of creatures engaging in their natural behaviors.

Are there many mosquitos during a December safari?

No! The drier conditions of this month usually mean fewer of these pesky insects and mosquitos compared to the wetter months , meaning a reduced likelihood of irritating insect bites that can put a damper on your adventure.

Nonetheless, it’s always a smart move to exercise caution. While the mosquito population might be lower, they’re still present in some areas. During the early mornings and evenings, when they tend to be more active, it’s advisable to take some preventive measures such as applying mosquito repellent and long-sleeved clothing.

What clothing should I pack for a December safari?

When preparing for your December safari, your choice of clothing plays a crucial role in maximizing your comfort and overall experience.

During daylight hours, the temperatures can rise significantly, so opt for lightweight and breathable clothing . Dressing in long-sleeved shirts and pants crafted from moisture-wicking materials not only shields you from the sun but also keeps you cool. Earthy shades like khaki, olive, and beige help you seamlessly blend into the natural surroundings while minimizing any disturbance to wildlife .

As mornings and evenings can bring a drop in temperatures, packing layers such as a light sweater or jacket is always a good idea. And when it comes to footwear, always opt for closed-toe shoes or sturdy hiking boots . They safeguard your feet against uneven terrains and potential critters. Additionally, tossing in a pair of lightweight sandals is a great idea for those moments of relaxation at the camp or lodge.

A wide-brimmed hat becomes your trusty companion while on every safari to ward off the sun’s rays, as well as UV-protective sunglasses .

Despite December’s tendency for reduced rainfall, it’s still a wise move to have a lightweight rain jacket or poncho on hand, just in case.

Safari highlights in december.

Unpredictability is what makes a safari exciting. You never know what you’ll see and every day is different. However, life in the bush is seasonal and some careful planning is recommended. Read on for a few tips on where to go on safari in December.

Springbok Gather Around the Pans in Central Kalahari, Botswana

By December the pans in the Deception Valley area of Central Kalahari GR have filled up sufficiently to attract big herds of impala, wildebeest, buffalo and zebra. Most impressive are the huge herds of springbok, which have come here to drop their young. These unsteady little newborns are a favorite prey for cheetahs prowling around on the fringes. Lions enjoy the easy pickings too, and seeing a fully grown male with its black mane, a typical feature of the Kalahari lions, is a special treat.

Zebra Migration at Nxai Pan, Botswana

The summer rains in December trigger the Chobe–Nxai zebra migration, the longest mammal movement in Africa. Every year, more than 30,000 plains zebra undertake the 1,000km/620mi return journey through remote desert areas. While the pan transforms from a barren wasteland to a green oasis, big herds of zebra, accompanied by smaller groups of wildebeest, spread out over the grassy plains. They stay until March before they return to the Chobe floodplains with its permanent water.

Flamingos Hatch at Lake Natron, Tanzania

Lake Natron in northern Tanzania is the most important breeding site for lesser flamingos in the world. Around September to October, the birds lay their eggs in dome-like mud constructions sticking out above the water surface. Most of the eggs hatch around December. Watching big numbers of pink flamingos strutting up and down the shallow waters, as if part of an elaborately choreographed dance, is a mesmerizing experience. Unsurprisingly it has been called the greatest ornithological spectacle on earth.

Best Time for a South African Safari Holiday

December is a fantastic time for a holiday in South Africa. It’s mid-summer, a perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities in Cape Town and the Garden Route. This region experiences a very mild climate, but December is sufficiently warm for swimming, spending time on the beaches, alfresco dining, hiking, sightseeing and just enjoying that feeling of summer holidays. Combine this with a safari in one of the excellent Big Five private reserves, such as Shamwari, Sabi Sand or Madikwe Game Reserves, and you have the perfect safari-holiday combo.

Where To Go

Many of Africa’s iconic experiences are seasonal in nature so take the guesswork out of planning your safari with our Travel Calendar: simply search by month or experience & find out the best time to travel to Africa for your requirements.

Africa in December

Africa’s a great place to be in december – read about the best places to visit & how to avoid the christmas crowds..

December is a popular time to travel to Africa and for good reason. It’s mid-summer and the beaches from Cape Town to Zanzibar are warm and sunny . And although it’s the early rainy season, December is a popular time for a wildlife safari in destinations like the Kruger Park and Botswana . Put them together and you have a classic ‘beach and bush’ holiday whether for a family, honeymoon couple or group of friends.

But Africa’s top travel destinations are also busy in December – especially over the Christmas period – and it pays to play smart. You’ll need to book well ahead for your preferred Cape Town accommodation for example, and if you keep your safari to the first half of December then you can take advantage of shoulder-season rates before the premium you’ll pay for a Christmas booking.

Cape Town & Garden Route | Botswana | Kwazulu Natal | Kruger | Bazaruto Archipelago | Tanzania | Namibia

1. Cape Town & Garden Route, South Africa

View of the Twelve Apostles and the Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town

Visit the Cape in December for great weather & a festive, holiday atmosphere.

WHY GO? Celebrate Christmas in the Cape; it's one of the world’s must-do holidays: the weather is great and there’s so much to see & do. WEATHER? Cape Town is settling into its long dry summer. There’s lots of sunshine and daily temperatures are kept comfortable by ocean breezes. COMBINATIONS? Go on a Big 5 safari to the Kruger Park/Sabi Private Reserves, or explore Botswana’s legendary Chobe National Park.

It’s December and most people are getting ready to relax and enjoy the festive season. It’s a good month to be in Cape Town and the Winelands, and the city combines easily with the Garden Route , a holiday region of beaches and mountains further along the Cape coast.

But December is a popular time at these destinations and it helps to have local advice to deliver the classic experience but without the Christmas crowds. Unless you specifically want Christmas in the Cape, for example, it is a lot less busy in the first two weeks of the month and you won’t be paying the festive-season premium for accommodation.

INSIDER TIP: “Be aware of a minimum-night stay policy at some accommodations if you are planning to spend only a night or two in some places.”

Other Great months for Cape Town & Garden Route : September through May.

2. Botswana

Game drive in Botswana Khwai Private Concession

December’s early rains make this a special time of year for both wildlife & bird watching.

WHY GO? It’s the Green Season: great safari options and bird-watching is at its best across the country. Travel specials & reduced accommodation rates. WEATHER? Warm and occasional rain showers; birthing season; good for Savuti & Kalahari game viewing and birding is phenomenal in summer. COMBINATIONS? Iconic Victoria Falls lies a short road transfer from the Chobe Park while Cape Town is sunny & dry in December and just a flight away.

Don’t be put off by the phrase ‘Green Season’: sure, it’s a synonym for rainy season but it’s no false advertising: the December rains have triggered a great wave of greenery and the Botswana landscape is lush and fertile. It’s a great time for wildlife watching: big herds of elephants, buffalo and zebra are on the move while other animals – impala and springbok particularly – are in the middle of their birthing season which almost guarantees predator action.

There’s always good game viewing at the famous Chobe River and Okavango Delta but this is a great time to discover Botswana’s lesser-known destinations which are at their peak in December according to many safari veterans. The Savuti area of the Chobe Park and the Kalahari region are both particularly good – they are green, covered in herds of animals and home to the biggest predators: lions, hyenas, cheetah, leopard and wild dogs.

INSIDER TIP: “Ask us about “Pay for Two, Stay for Three Nights” specials available.”

Other Great months for Chobe : July, August, September & October.

3. Kwazulu Natal, South Africa

Turtle tracking in South Africa Kwazulu Natal province

Chances are you won’t be the only ones on the beach on KwaZulu Natal’s tropical coast.

WHY GO? Popular destination with families, history enthusiasts, wildlife-lovers & scuba-divers. It's one of South Africa’s most diverse regions. WEATHER? Sunny, warm and pleasant sea temperatures all year round. But expect summer showers and an average maximum temperature of 27°C/80°F. COMBINATIONS? It’s a quick & easy flight to Cape Town & from there you can head into the Garden Route for more beaches, sunshine & stunning scenery.

One of South Africa’s big December holiday destinations, KwaZulu Natal is large and diverse enough to deliver a unique holiday while avoiding the big crowds of the provinces more popular places. It’s primarily a ‘beach and bush’ destination with a different slant on both compared to the more familiar Cape beaches and Kruger wildlife.

KwaZulu Natal is sub-tropical and its Indian Ocean is warm in December (around 25°C or 77°F) with coral reefs to explore on scuba dives while its wildlife is concentrated in smaller, highly diverse reserves, often with an emphasis on rhino conservation. It’s the country’s top birding destination, home to exciting walking safaris, great for families, and has a long and fascinating history – put it all together on one itinerary.

INSIDER TIP: “It’s hot in December: choose a safari lodge with a swimming pool!”

Other Great months for Gorilla Trekking : May through November.

4. Kruger Park & Sabi Sands, South Africa

Lion pride spotted on a Sabi Sand game drive

The start of the rains means the birthing season in the Kruger – great for photography.

WHY GO? Green Season game viewing at one of Africa’s best Big 5 destinations. We recommend a safari to the Kruger’s private reserves. WEATHER? Warm and sunny weather with some days of cloud and rain. You will experience lush landscapes and epic bird watching. COMBINATIONS? Direct flights to some of Africa’s best beach destinations such as Cape Town & Vilanculos, gateway to Mozambique’s Bazaruto islands.

The Kruger Park and its adjacent Sabi Private Reserves are renowned for their Big 5 game viewing (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard) and a December safari – especially one over Christmas – has become something of a tradition. The rains have begun in December but the bulk of it is yet to come; the landscape is green and rejuvenated, migrant birds are arriving and many animals – especially antelope – have given birth which means plenty of predators.

Given that the greenery may make animals harder to find, we’d recommend a safari to the Kruger’s private reserves. Their smaller size and expert guides make it easier to locate the big sightings, and although they are home to some of the most luxurious and exclusive safari accommodation in Africa, the Sabi Reserves also have a range of more affordable lodges and child-friendly camps.

INSIDER TIP: “Go to the Kruger during the first two weeks in December before the big holiday crowds.”

Other Great months for Kruger Park : May through November.

5. Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Island Hop Activity in Mozambique Bazaruto Archipelago

Maroon yourself on a desert island but with a private pool & room service – a perfect treat.

WHY GO? Palm-fringed beaches, warm Indian Ocean water and coral reefs – who wouldn’t want to spend December on a Bazaruto island? WEATHER? You might get some rain in December but it’s warm and sunny most of the time and combines easily with most safari destinations. COMBINATIONS? Direct flight from Vilanculos to the Kruger Park for a great beach & bush holiday or you can connect via Johannesburg to summer-season Cape Town.

With the ocean temperature reaching almost 30°C (86°F) on some days, it’s fair to say that Mozambique’s Bazaruro Archipelago makes a perfect beach holiday destination in December.

A collection of different islands, each with their own character, Bazaruto is a place of long white-sand beaches and lazily nodding palm trees. There are coral reefs and dhow sailing cruises, spa treatments and yoga classes, horseback rides and snorkelling – something for everyone whether a family with young children or a honeymoon couple.

INSIDER TIP: “Make sure you know about the minimum-night stay policy at some Bazaruto accommodations. “

Other Great months for Bazaruto & Quirimbas : June through November.

6. Tanzania

Predators chasing the wildebeest migration in Tanzania Ndutu area

It’s all action in the Serengeti in December – combine it with Tanzania’s other top destinations.

WHY GO? It’s Green Season – there’s some rain but the wildebeest migration is on the go & you’ll also enjoy reduced accommodation rates. WEATHER? December delivers rain in Tanzania’s safari country but it’s not yet the heavy rains of the early year. Warm & sunny temperatures. COMBINATIONS? The Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar is nice & hot in December plus it’s an easy beach holiday add-on to your safari itinerary.

The southern Serengeti is the most obvious destination on the itinerary of a Tanzania safari in December. It’s here that the great wildebeest herds have gathered after their trek from the Masai Mara and the birthing season is beginning. It’s prime time for the Serengeti’s many predators – especially lion and cheetah – and you’ll see all the other classic animals too such as elephant, buffalo and giraffe.

Other wildlife destinations like the Ngorongoro Crater and Ruaha National Park are looking green and lush and still offer rewarding game viewing. There’s a wide range of safari accommodation available – from very luxurious to those aimed at families with children or budget travellers – and if you have your eye on the Serengeti wildebeest migration, then we recommend a migration camp, a semi–permanent tented camp located on the path of the migration.

INSIDER TIP: “Low-season accommodation rates last until the middle of December: it’s a good time for a safari across the country but especially in the Serengeti.”

Other Great months for Tanzania : Between November & August for the Serengeti wildebeest migration; between June & October (the dry season) for Tanzania’s other reserves.

Panoramic view of Skeleton Coast sand dunes

Travel to Namibia in December & experience its best destinations at lower rates.

WHY GO? It’s Green Season & there’s a different face to the landscape; take advantage of shoulder-season accommodation rates at the best destinations. WEATHER? It’s hot at this time of year – expect temperatures ranging between 25°C and 35°C (77°F and 95°F) – and there is a chance of rain. COMBINATIONS? Cape Town is always popular choice & makes for a festive Christmas but also consider a safari to Botswana for dramatic wildlife viewing.

Namibia doesn’t get much rain in general but what rain it does get has an amazing effect on the landscape. Great swathes of greenery appear as cracked-mud waterholes fill up and forgotten rivers begin to trickle.

In Etosha Park, Namibia’s prime wildlife reserve, the zebra and antelope herds are in their birthing season and elephants are taking advantage of all the new greenery. December is a good time to see predators in Etosha and it’s one of the best months for birdwatchers as well. Combine the action of the savannah with the haunting loveliness of Namibia’s deserts with trips to Damaraland and the Sossusvlei dunes.

INSIDER TIP: “We’d recommend travelling during the first half of December to avoid the Christmas holiday crowds in places like Swakopmund & Etosha.”

Other Great month for Namibia whale-watching : June through October.

Our 28-day itinerary took us to South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. A magnificent and unforgettable adventure. Everything ran smoothly and efficiently from the flights, transfers, rides, connections, etc. Absolutely wonderful! Can’t thank them enough!

We have been to Africa for 24 of the last 27 years so know a bit about what is involved. Walter has arranged the details for the last couple of years, and has done a superb job. He is always quick to respond and comes up with answers immediately……..no evasive tactics, always head-on!

From the very first contact we’re very happy about the respond time and quality of information from safari-online.com. Based on the received first tailor-made quote, which is a weblink with all the details about the flights, photos of the lodges etc. we knew that this is “our” partner for this trip. Our expectations were excelled!!!

Our experience with Safari Online was excellent. After becoming very frustrated trying to search for a safari destination on our own, we turned to Karina for help and she was a lifesaver.  We had an amazing safari adventure at the lodge–the experience of a lifetime–and are so grateful for her help. We literally couldn’t have done it without her!

Our mom grew up in Central and South Africa so we had visited the continent many times. My sister and I wanted to take our teens and husbands to Africa to experience the magic. We had a limited budget but big and specific expectations and by some miracle Walter was able to manage both.

Where to go in Africa in December; Visit These 5 Places

where to go in africa in december

If winter in the Northern Hemisphere isn’t quite your cup of tea, then you must be wondering where to go in Africa in December. Africa in December is beautiful as summer is in full swing, the dreamy weather corresponds with the festive season and many places are at their blissful best.

As the Northern Hemisphere sinks into the cold days of winter, the Mother Continent stretches its arms out wide to welcome you. The Great wildlife migration is taking place now in Africa’s plains and migrant birds are also arriving to fill the air. Beach holidays are also fantastic during this period. If you’re wondering where to go in Africa in December, here are our best picks.

Table of Contents

Where to go in Africa in December

With 54 countries making up the second-largest continent in Africa, picking the best destination to visit during winter in Europe is challenging at times. However, the following five places are the perfect African destinations to visit during winter.

1. South Africa

With some of the finest game drives and the opportunity to combine bush and beach holidays, South Africa tops our list of African countries to visit during winter in Europe. Here, the weather is beautifully warm and the chances of rain are very low, making it a perfect destination to escape the Northern Hemisphere’s cold.

Cape Town remains one of the best places to visit in South Africa in December. The Mother City offers picturesque mountains, gorgeous beaches and bottle-green wine valleys all within easy reach. Other places to visit in South Africa during winter include Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) and the Garden Route, which is arguably the most beautiful stretch of coastline in Africa.

2. Botswana

Botswana is one of the names that pops up when talking about where to go in Africa in December. Early December time sees the rains arrive in the Makgadikgadi Pan area and the dry pan is transformed into a teeming mass of wildlife.

The outlying fringes of the pan then become lush with green grass hence enticing large herds of wildebeest, antelopes and zebras. There is also a large number of predators such as lions, leopards, wild dogs , hyenas and cheetahs who prey on the herbivores.

Incredible natural beauty and unforgettable cultural encounters make Kenya an ideal destination if you’re wondering where to go in Africa in December. The East African country is a popular tourist destination that will impress you with its wilderness and charm.

From amazing river valleys to magnificent mountains and exotic beaches to diverse wildlife, Kenya in December turns into a fantasy place. Combining your time watching wildlife in the plains and visiting Kenya’s pristine beaches is the perfect way to spend your December holiday.

4. Tanzania

If you love the thrill of adventure, escape the winter period in Europe by taking a trip to Tanzania. December is Tanzania’s end of the dry season and the lack of precipitation makes for perfect safari conditions as the animals congregate around water sources.

From the famous Serengeti to Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania is home to some of the world’s most iconic national parks. Spend a few days exploring Zanzibar islands before booking your flight back to Europe.

5. Namibia

Namibia is a classic, year-round destination with less extreme weather patterns . In December, the northern part of the country should be your area of choice. Head straight up to Serra Cafema and boat along the Kunene River to get a surreal experience in the heart of the dry, wind-blown landscape.

Take time to explore the desert-adapted elephants in the hills around Hoanib Valley Camp before ending your trip with the ultimate flying safari along the beautiful Skeleton Coast. No list of where to go in Africa in December would be complete without Namibia.

Is December a Good Time to Go to Africa?

The weather in Africa in December is mostly hot and sunny while the occasional cooling rains in the interior make things green. This is the time when great wildlife migrations are taking place as fresh grasses begin to cover the continent’s rolling plains from the Serengeti to the Kalahari Desert.

Some great suggestions where to have the best safari experiences in December

Principe Island 8 Copy

In December, Africa is in the height of summer with many places at their lushest. Rains are at their heaviest with beautifully dramatic storms sweeping across the continent brining much needs water. Because of the abundance of water, the large herds have dispersed making wildlife viewing more difficult than other months but it is still a very rewarding time to travel to certain areas of Africa. In Southern Africa, impala ewes have begun dropping their adorable lambs with predators lurking nearby. South Africa is potentially one of the best countries to visit in December as it has enough concentrations of wildlife to provide fantastic, top-quality safari experiences.

Uganda and Rwanda

Whilst thunderstorms light up the skies across Southern Africa, Rwanda and Uganda are in their dry season which creates ideal conditions for mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest, Uganda and Volcanoes National Park, in Rwanda as the paths are less slippery and the skies are clear. Conditions are like this throughout the region, meaning other primate experiences are also just as accessible.

South Africa

South Africa hold such tremendous diversity that it simply cannot be discounted in December. Some areas are prone to spectacular thunderstorms, but these can be short lived. The bush is alive, filled with lush greenery, beautiful coloured birds and an abundance of young animals both prey and predators alike. The Sabi Sands in the Greater Kruger National Park can provide some stunning safari options with private lodges offering some of the most luxurious lodges you will find anywhere in Africa.

The Central Kalahari region which is usually bone dry and arid is flush with a green carpet, attracting large herds of springbok and oryx which provides an annual abundance for the resident cheetah and black-maned lions. This region is probably one of the finest and most productive to see both these critically endangered big cats.

December is also a great time to visit Cape Town with days usually filled with beautiful weather warm with clear, cloudless skies and little to no rain. It’s a great time to visit as there’s a lot going on in this modern, cosmopolitan city. Beer, wine, gin and champagne and food festivals aplenty as it’s the height of the South African summer. And don’t forget the Franschhoek Wine Tram – a journey which makes plenty of stops along a route strewn with some of the oldest and distinguished wine estates in South Africa.

Kwitonda Gorilla

Head to the central regions of the Serengeti and you’ll be rewarded with the spectacle of the Great Migration in relative isolation as the peak season is well past. The vast herds are making their way south towards their calving grounds. And of course, the journey is fraught with danger as they pass through territories belonging to prides of lion, coalitions of cheetah and clans of hyena… dramatic and adrenaline hunting scenes await.

Sao Tome and Principe Islands

Between September and April are the best months to head to these tranquil, idyllic equatorial islands of Sao Tome and Principe off the west coast of Africa as several different of turtles are nesting along the beautiful beaches. Hawksbill, leatherback, green and olive ridley turtles can all be seen in what has become an site of ecological importance to the survival of these gentle ocean dwellers.

If you’re lucky you may get to see a female digging out her nest before laying her precious eggs and then making her way back to the ocean. Or you may get to see the emergence of the hatchlings as they struggle from their nest buried deep in the sand, then scrambling their way through the gauntlet of the beach.

It is a remarkable and emotional experience as you watch the hatchlings overcoming obstacles such as driftwood and dodging predators in the form of birds and crabs before reaching the open ocean waters. It’s estimated that out of every 1,000 turtles born, only a handful will survive to adulthood before eventually returning to the same beach to make their own nests, laying the next generation of hatchlings.

Enjoyed the trip, saw lots of different animals, history and culture. Spent a lot of the time driving but the variety of game drives and optional activities created a good balance. The 2 groups I was a part of were great people and good company. The meals however were poor, felt our guide didn't try his best, majority of meals were cheap and our meal allowances were equivalent to $2-3 when given to eat on our long drives. He definitely could of done better with options especially after several comments and suggestions from our group. I didn't feel the food we got was anywhere the price I paid for the trip. Breakfasts consisted of cornflakes, weetabix, fruit and occasional yoghurt which was hidden and rationed along with museli. There were some days closer to the end where we got eggs, sausage and pancakes. Some individuals didn't even eat much overall because there wasn't much selection. Lunches consisted of processed meat sandwiches, apples and bananas for the most part. Dinners were rice, pasta, some vegetables and bread. The meat options were fine and more catered to I found. Unfortunately I felt that our guide wasn't organized with activities either, left everything to the last minute. He became more involved and active on the 2nd half of our journey with the group, for the first half he was a little reserved. Our driver was amazing and very accommodating and friendly. I would definetely do another G trip but would like to have a more outgoing and accommodating guide.

12-day Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)

The tour was amazing travelling from South Africa, Zimbabwe and through to Botswana ,saw some incredible natural wonders such as Vic Falls, national parks and being taken through the Delta river by small canoes. A real slice of heaven. I especially love the camp in the Delta where their had erected a manual shower and a loo our the back of the tent, so when looking up at night you could see the stars, the moon and where surrounded by natural wonders. Hearing the sounds of the night , little reed frogs and the sounds of hippos talking to one another was amazing. Wish the tour was longer and that we could have stayed a little longer in each place to really soak up the vibe of the towns that we visited. Nice small group to travel with 6-7 people and accommodation was far beyond my expectations.

16 Days of Intensive Adventurous Safari through Magical Uganda and Rwanda ( Private tour) Tour

16 Days of Intensive Adventurous Safari through Magical Uganda and Rwanda ( Private tour)

I had the most incredible experience with Mukisa Safaris. This was a solo adventure 23 day slightly customized tour of Uganda and Rwanda, where I wanted to spend a few extra days driving around Rwanda on top of an all-encompassing tour of Uganda. From first contact with Richard, everything was handled completely professionally and seamlessly, and responses and tour modifications were sent over almost immediately, as I fine tuned my trip, which really help plan (they can do economy / premium accommodation options, as well as customizing your tour exactly how you want) After being picked up from the airport, everything was handled to such perfection, and I felt completely safe the entire time, while we toured the most remote parts of the countries, exploring wildlife, rural villagers, and much more. All hotel bookings and transportation was handled by Mukisa, and I didn’t have to do a thing. We had a tour of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Kidepo Valley, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi, village tours, a 8 day hike in the Rwenzori mountains, and a few days in Rwanda to relax at the Lake Kivu and explore a bit more. My main goal was wildlife photography, and the vehicle was perfectly equipped having an open top for safaris. I captured some amazing shots of lions in trees, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, gorillas, chimpanzees, and local culture. They say Uganda has the Big 7 :) - add Gorillas and Chimpanzees My guides were Giraffe and Solomon. They were an absolute pleasure to have as companions for 23 days, having vast knowledge of the countries, national parks, culture, where to eat, and always providing insightful commentary as we traversed the lands. We always stopped over at great places to eat that accommodated an international diet, instead of packed lunches, however you can eat anywhere if you like. Any personal requests I had were always remembered, such as getting photos of certain subjects or areas, or searching for certain foods (Samosas are my favorite). Water always in the car, and they even a travel adapter for the Rwanda power plugs, which I didn’t think about. So much appreciated was having 4G internet the whole time via hot spot. You can drive up to 8 hours some days and the internet was always reliable and fast! I cannot recommend Mukisa Safaris enough, they can completely customize any kind of trip you would like, are so hospitable, and I left Uganda with some of my favorite travel memories ever. And on top of that I now consider them as friends and family. I will definitely return! Uganda, as they say, The Pearl of Africa, is the most beautiful country to explore, and Mukisa Safaris made it the most enjoyable experience!

African Safari Tour Reviews

The tour was very well organized. Everything worked up quite well and everyone took good care of us. It was a magnificent time in Tanzania's wild nature. Also the tour company took care of all changes online (one day early arrival and extra shira tour booking) in a flexible and timely manner. Our Safari guide and driver Israel did really a great job. He worked hard to find all the animals for us as good as possible. This wasn't an easy job as we were there during rain season. He kept us safe and well informed all the time. We saw many wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas and of course tons of Gnus, zebras and all kinds of antilopes, monkeys and birds. We could even see some of the big five like the lion from eye to eye, roaming around less than 1m from our vehicle! Of course there's no guaranty of which wild animals you'll see as we're talking about natural parks, but you can rest assured the guides are doing their best to show you what nature is offering during your visit. All the staff in the hotels, parks and people in general were very kind and very welcoming! The food was always good and safe. FYI, the actual safari is 5 days + 2 days arrival and departure. Nevertheless within these 5 days we saw so many places and had a unique nature experience. "Luxury" as mentioned in the title is a bit too much said, especially when it comes to accommodation. On the other hand all the hotel names/ratings and the exact itinerary were mentioned clearly so no surprises. The luxurious part was actually that we were only on our own since it's low season :) Our guide Israel was flexible and fulfilled every possible wish we had. The Maasai village tour in the way to Serengeti costs an extra 50$ which is a fair price but they will also offer you some overpriced hand-made souvenirs to buy. The tour itself was very interesting and nice including a welcome song and dance basically from the whole village :) The Serengeti Safari lounge was quite spacious and had a big balcony to enjoy the endless view of the Serengeti. That was definitely the best accommodation of the trip. We woke up to a great show of a huge group of Gnus and Zebras directly in front of our balcony. The very ones who were singing for us all night :) Last but not least: if you're wondering about the prices even for a day tour, you should know that the park fees including conservation fees are quite high. So you're basically contributing to the well-being of these parks as well as the many wonderful people protecting them.
A bit late with the review... The trip was November 2019 and it was the best trip ever!!! Simon best guide, stunning places, welcoming locals and amazing experiences! the flight over the Okavango Delta is highly recommended.

5 African countries with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates

Visa applications tend to be the first obstacle people encounter while looking to travel. In Africa, some countries find the process frustrating due to startlingly high rate in which they are denied visas. For context, 70% of the top 10 countries in the world with the highest visa rejection rates into the Schengen region of Europe (which encompasses 29 countries) are African.

5 African countries with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates

  • Business Insider Africa presents 5 African countries with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates.
  • This list is courtesy of Henley and Partners.
  • African countries account for 7 of the 10 countries in the world with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates.

Recommended articles

One of the groups heavily affected by visa rejections is the entrepreneurs. Hard-working business folks who sometimes, depending on the region they are born in, face forestalling in business growth due to an inability to expand outside of their borders.

This stifling of economic opportunities not only hampers the growth potential of African businesses but also perpetuates a cycle of dependency on domestic markets.

Aside from seeking economic opportunities, some Africans in certain regions looking to travel for vacation, education or just visiting purposes have had their visas rejected.

There is also a sense of isolation when one is denied entry into a foreign region. As a result, concerted efforts must be made by governments to promote visa liberalization, streamline application processes, and combat discriminatory practices.

DON'T MISS THIS: 10 African countries with the weakest passports in Q1 of 2024

This leaves the question of which countries in Africa suffer this complication the most.

According to a recent report by Henley and Partners, ranking the 10 countries in the world with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates, “Africa accounted for seven of the top ten countries with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates in 2022.”

“Globally, the absolute number of Schengen visa applications decreased from 16.7 million in 2014 to 7.6 million in 2022, representing a decline of almost 9 million applications. In other words, the global number of Schengen visa applications declined by nearly 54.7%,” the report reads.

However, “African visa applicants face more severe restrictions compared to applicants from other regions, resulting in a disproportionately high rejection rate. In 2022, Africa topped the list of rejections with 30% or one in three of all processed applications being turned down, even though it had the lowest number of visa applications per capita,” the report adds.

With that said here are the 5 African countries with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates.

The other 2 countries on the list are Guinea and Mali, with rejection rates of 40.6% and 39.9% respectively.

The Buffalo Bills team building trip to Africa this summer

  • Author: Chris Pirrone

In this story:

The Buffalo Bills social team is always keeping us on our toes with inane references or videos to trending or viral topics. As the Bills arrived for OTAs in Orchard Park, many players explained that they had spent the offseason getting smarter by studying moles in Africa.

Watch Josh Allen, Khalil Shakir, Mack Collins and other Bills play along with their insights about the Golden Mole, with a nod to a story line from HBO’s The Wire.

Toward the end of the video, Dion Dawkins and others also riff on the popular "What's up brother?" line from social media celebrity Sketch, who has a handful of popular phrases which he uses on social or when he's audibling plays on Madden. Sketch became friends with popular content creator Jynxzi when the two would often collaborate via Twitch. In a video from earlier this year, Jynxzi called Sketch on video and pointed the phone toward the camera with Sketch blurting his famous line "What's up brother?"

Brains got bigger this offseason. 🧠 #GoBills | #BillsMafia pic.twitter.com/Yi2t52xL1s — Buffalo Bills (@BuffaloBills) April 15, 2024

As a landmark United Methodist gathering approaches, African churches weigh their future

The United Methodist Church lost one-fourth of its U.S. churches in a recent schism, with conservatives departing over disputes on sexuality and theology.

Now, with the approach of its first major legislative gathering in several years, the question is whether the church can avert a similar outcome elsewhere in the world, where about half its members live.

The question is particularly acute in Africa, home to the vast majority of United Methodists outside the U.S. Most of its bishops favor staying, but other voices are calling for regional conferences to disaffiliate.

At the upcoming General Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, delegates will tackle a wide range of proposals – from repealing the church’s ban on same-sex marriage and ordaining LGBTQ people, to creating more autonomy for regional conferences to set such rules, to making it easier for international churches to leave the denomination.

Delegate Jerry Kulah of Liberia said he believes it’s time for African churches to leave.

He said that when he first attended a General Conference in 2008, he was shocked by proposals to liberalize church rules. Since then, he helped mobilize African delegates to vote with American conservatives to create ever-stricter denominational rules against same-sex marriage and ordaining LGBTQ people.

But progressive American churches have increasingly been defying such rules and now appear to have the votes to overturn them.

“We know that we are not going to the General Conference to necessarily win votes,” said Kulah, general coordinator of the advocacy group UMC Africa Initiative. “So our goal is to go and articulate our position and let the world know why it has become very necessary to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church, because we cannot afford to preach different gospels.”

But Jefferson Knight, also a delegate from Liberia, opposes disaffiliation. He said a schism would amount to forsaking the rich spiritual legacy of the UMC in Africa and would severe its valuable international bonds.

“Liberia was the birthplace of the United Methodist Church on the continent of Africa in the 1800s,” said Knight, of the advocacy group United Methodist Africa Forum. The church has developed leaders in education, health care and evangelism across the continent, said Knight, who also works as a human rights monitor for the church.

Knight said schism isn’t necessary.

He shares the widespread opposition in Africa to liberalizing policies on marriage or ordination, but he favors a proposal that would allow each region of the church – from America to Africa to Europe to the Philippines – to fit rules to its local context.

“The best way out is to regionalize and see how we can do ministry peacefully and do ministry within our context, our culture,” Knight said.

The United Methodist Church traces its roots to 18th century revivalist John Wesley and has long emphasized Christian piety, evangelism and social service. It has historically been present in almost every U.S. county.

But it’s also the most international of the major U.S. Protestant denominations.

Generations of missionary efforts brought Methodism across the world. Local churches took root and grew dramatically, particularly in Africa.

Today, members from four continents vote at legislative gatherings, serve on boards together, go on mission trips to each others’ countries and are largely governed by the same rules. U.S. churches help fund international ministries, such as Africa University in Zimbabwe.

More than 7,600 U.S. congregations departed during a temporary window between 2019 and 2023 that enabled congregations to keep their properties – held in trust for the denomination – under relatively favorable legal terms, according to a UM News count.

That provision applied only to American churches. Some say the General Conference – running April 23 through May 3 – should approve one for other countries.

“Our main goal is to ensure that African and other United Methodist outside the U.S. have the same opportunity that United Methodists in the U.S. have had,” said the Rev. Thomas Lambrecht, vice president of the conservative advocacy group Good News.

Opponents say overseas churches already can disaffiliate under church rules – and some conferences in Eastern Europe have taken such steps. But proponents say the process is too cumbersome.

Further complicating the matter is that churches operate in a range of legal settings. Some African countries criminalize same-sex activity , while in the U.S., same-sex marriage is legal.

Most departing American congregations were conservative churches upset with the denomination’s failure to enforce its bans on same-sex unions and the ordination of LGBTQ people. Some joined denominations such as the new Global Methodist Church , while others went independent.

The departures accelerated membership losses in what until recently had been the third-largest American denomination. The United Methodist Church recorded 5.4 million U.S. members in 2022, a figure sure to plummet once disaffiliations from 2023 are factored in.

A detailed study by the UMC’s General Council on Finance and Administration indicated there are 4.6 million members in other countries – fewer than earlier estimates, but still approaching U.S. numbers.

The United Methodist Church has been debating homosexuality since the early 1970s, steadily tightening its LGBTQ bans through its last legislative gathering in 2019.

That year, “the traditionalists won the vote but they lost the church” said the Rev. Mark Holland, executive director of Mainstream UMC, which advocates for lifting the church-wide bans and for a “regionalization” proposal allowing each region to decide on such rules.

He noted that numerous regional church conferences in the United States reacted to the 2019 vote by electing more progressive delegates to the upcoming General Conference.

Progressives believe they have adequate votes to repeal language in the governing Book of Discipline barring ordination of “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” and penalizing pastors who perform same-sex marriages.

Less certain is the fate of regionalization, which would increase regional autonomy. Regionalization involves constitutional amendments requiring a two-thirds General Conference majority and approval by two-thirds of local conferences worldwide.

Proponents say regionalization would also bring parity to different regions, saying the current system is a U.S.-centric relic of an earlier missionary era. The regionalization scenario could also allow churches in some regions to maintain LGBTQ bans while others remove them.

Church regions outside the United States already have some leeway in adapting rules to their settings, but regionalization would define that flexibility more precisely and extend it to U.S. churches.

The UMC-affiliated church in the Philippines – the only one in Asia, with about 280,000 members – would maintain its opposition to same-sex marriage, which is not legally recognized there, a church official said. It will also not allow openly LGBTQ people to be ordained.

Most African bishops oppose disaffiliation, even as they oppose LGBTQ ordination and marriage.

“Notwithstanding the differences in our UMC regarding the issue of human sexuality especially with our stance of traditional and biblical view of marriage, we categorically state that we do not plan to leave The United Methodist Church and will continue to be shepherds of God’s flock in this worldwide denomination,” said a statement signed by 11 African bishops at a meeting in September.

Among those withholding signatures was Nigeria Area Bishop John Wesley Yohanna.

Nigerian Methodists in December celebrated 100 years of the denomination in their country, but its future remains uncertain. Deeply conservative views on sexuality are widespread in Nigeria. A spokesman said the bishop’s position on disaffiliation would be determined by what happens at the General Conference.

Same-sex marriage “is unbiblical and also is incompatible with Christian teaching according to our Book of Discipline,” Yohanna said at a January news conference, in which he also said “no to regionalization.“

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

A singular train track, with one short train, cuts through a lush deep forest.

By Elisabeth Malkin

Elisabeth Malkin has been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula for three decades.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Route of Mexico’s Maya Train

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.
