Tri-Country Trip on a Budget: 4D3N Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia for P15,000 All-in

By vivomigsgee in Travel February 26, 2020

Truth be told, Singapore was not on my destination list for this year’s travel. All the more, its equally amazing neighboring countries such as Malaysia to the north and Indonesia to the south were not on my travel radar either. Q1 2020 travel plan was originally Shanghai and it could have been my college best friends’ first winter trip together. However, since the worldwide implementation of travel restrictions to and from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau due to Covid-19 outbreak, our flights to Shanghai were cancelled in due course.

Adjustments were to be made. All of my supposed travel companions backed out due to the fear of unknown degree of effect of Covid-19 and other valid reasons. I was devastated with the news but I wouldn’t let this thing dry up my travel plans. As the last man standing, I booked a flight to Singapore and planned of doing a tri-country trip ‘coz nothing is stopping me to push through with my first international trip for 2020, even if it would mean traveling solo and notwithstanding the fact that as of travel date, Singapore ranked as the highest country with the most number of confirmed Covid-19 cases outside of China, prompting activation of DORSCON code “ orange “.

Despite all the uncertainties and risks inherent in traveling to coronavirus-hit countries, I have also done my fair share of exercising discernment, taking precautions towards personal hygiene and continuously monitoring the situation. When all seemed manageable, I convinced my best buddy Junfer ( @iamjumper ), who is Manila-based, to book a flight to Singapore at the last minute. Surprisingly, he agreed without hesitation and the tri-country trip finally happened. We spent below Php 15,000 per person for all expenses incurred ( half of which pertains to airfare and pre-departure fees ) in all three countries: Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. See budget breakdown at the end of this article.

If you are looking for a sign to push through with your Singapore travel anytime soon or just looking for a reference for your budget tri-country plans, here’s a personal travel blog you shouldn’t miss! And oh, this isn’t your typical tri-city tour such as Singapore-Johur Bahru-Batam. I meticulously handpicked the cross-border destinations such as Singapore-Kuala Lumpur-Bintan Island for a jam-packed IG-worthy adventure. Check each tri-country leg below for some inspiration.

HOW TO GET TO SINGAPORE FROM CEBU, PHILIPPINES

Singapore is a major international transport hub in Asia, serving some of the busiest sea and air trade routes. It is a sovereign city-state and island country located in maritime Southeast Asia. Although Singapore and the Philippines are both part of Southeast Asia, Singapore is only accessible from the Philippines by air, with direct route from Cebu, among other major aviation hubs in the country. Flight duration is up to 4 hours, with no time difference between Singapore and the Philippines.

As flight costs comprise a significant percentage of the total travel expenses, it’s best to purchase them in advance to score cheaper airfares. Make sure to book from low-cost carriers such as Cebu Pacific Air since it is undoubtedly the best airline that launches crazy promo (piso) fares and seat sales favored by budget travelers. You can book a direct flight from Cebu to Singapore for as low as Php 4,000 round trip. To score insanely cheap flights, know some effective secrets here: PISO FARE TO SINGAPORE

TRI-COUNTRY BUDGET TRIP LEG 1: SINGAPORE

Singapore Amidst Covid-19 Outbreak: To start off, let me be the one to tell you that Singapore is a safe country to travel amidst the Covid-19 epidemic. The government of Singapore has been going to great lengths to keep the spread of the virus at bay through a multitude of precautionary measures in place. Other than implementation of universal screenings for passengers on incoming flights and installation of free hand sanitizer around the airport, everything seemed normal like people are not wearing masks, even on MRTs. My apologies if this is a sensitive matter for you but I was even joking about my caption in one of my posts in social media upon arrival in Jewel Changi Airport to demonstrate thrill and courage. It reads:

Jewel: What do we say to the God of Covid-19? Me: NOT TODAY, lah!

Singapore at a Glance: Singapore is known for various moniker such as “Lion City”, “Garden City,” “City of the Future” among others but what struck me most is “Instant Asia”. Boasting an expeditious glimpse into the cultures brought about by immigrants from all parts of Asia, Singapore is a melting pot of all things Asian. While predominantly Chinese, it has substantial minorities of Malays and Indians.

Where to Stay in Singapore: Speaking of multicultural hub, I booked our hotel accommodation for 3 nights in Little India where unsurprisingly there are a lot of Singaporean nationals with Indian descent in the area. We spent only Php 1,300 each for 3 nights in a dormitory-type room via Agoda. The room is clean with basic features, near restaurants and convenience stores and very accessible by train or shuttle bus from the airport.

Getting Around Singapore: Commuting around Singapore is not too complicated, unlike Japan or South Korea ! Train is a popular form of public transport in Singapore as the fares are relatively cheap compared to any other means of transportation such taxi or grab car. For tourist, the best way to save on transportation cost is to purchase a Singapore Tourist Pass. Discover Singapore with the only card that gives you unlimited travel on public transport – Singapore Tourist Pass! The pricing of each card depends on the number of stay in Singapore, to wit: 1 Day is 10 SGD, 2 Days is 16 SGD, 3 Days is 20 SGD. A refundable rental deposit worth 10 SGD will also be part of the total cost ( to be refunded upon return of STP card at any MRT ticketing office ). I bought one at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 2 upon arrival and returned it upon departure. And oh, don’t forget to download Singapore Metro app in your phone as it will be your navigation buddy when in Singapore, aside from google maps.

Internet Connectivity in Singapore : For mobile data options, having a local sim card is a necessity. I scouted for a cheap sim card around Singapore Changi Airport but I haven’t found a good one that includes data connection for Malaysia and Indonesia. Luckily, I found one near Campbell Inn, our hotel accommodation in Little India. I bought a sim card powered by Singtel worth 15 SGD good for 7 days (GST inclusive) with 100 GB 4G local data, 30 minutes international calls, 100 local SMS, 500 mins local calls, unlimited access to social media apps and free 1 GB roaming data that’s applicable in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and even in Australia. I must say this is the best local sim for tourists who’d love to try a tri-country trip on a budget.

Tourist Spots in Singapore: According to The Straits Times published article dated October 2018, Singapore is the 5th most visited city in the world, and 2nd in the Asia-Pacific. Rightfully so, Singapore’s diverse offerings from its vibrant events, unique tourist attractions and world-renowned cuisine have enabled the city to hold its place as one of the top five most popular destinations globally. Singapore is a popular tourist destination, with well-known landmarks such as the Merlion, Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa, and the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the only tropical garden in the world to be honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’d be surprised that there’s more to these famous landmarks to explore in Singapore that will equally capture your hearts but without breaking your bank.

For this particular trip, we only spent less than Php 5,000 in Singapore covering costs for accommodation, sim card, food and transportation. What’s the secret? Visit top tourist spots in Singapore for FREE.

HOW TO GET TO MALAYSIA FROM SINGAPORE

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

Malaysia consists of two geographical regions divided by the South China Sea: the Malaysian Borneo (or East Malaysia) located on the northern third of Borneo island and the peninsular Malaysia (or West Malaysia) on the Malay Peninsula bordered by Thailand on the north and Singapore at its tip in south. It can be reached via Singapore either by train, bus, ferry or plane. In this budget travel guide, I will only share what we experienced – by bus.

It is fairly easy to travel by bus between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Numerous buses depart daily from Singapore to your choice of destination in the peninsular Malaysia. You have a choice of at least 9 bus operators, all differ in price and comfort. A great place to start your search is at redbus.sg . Book your tickets online to skip the hassle of lining up in the ticketing office and ensure seat reservations in advance. The cheapest one way ticket (reschedulable) will cost you no more than 13 SGD. The bus will usually take 4 to 6 hours to reach Kuala Lumpur and arrive at your destination of choice ( KL Sentral, BTS, etc. ) so make sure you know where you’d like to be dropped off.

To maximize the time of day tour in both Singapore and Malaysia, we booked a round-trip overnight bus operated by Starmart Express with terminal located at Golden Mile Tower in Bugis, Singapore (11:30 PM departure) and bus stop at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur (05:30 AM arrival the next day). Traveling back to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur is also a breeze, with the exact bus stop and bus schedule transiting in reverse order. Both bus terminals are located in the city center, accessible by local trains ( Bugis Station in SG and Imbi Station in KL ). The reclining bus seats were convenient, with charging ports and more leg space.

Cross-border commuters will be required to take off the bus twice during the trip. First, when it reaches the Woodlands Singapore checkpoint; and second, for Malaysian Immigration checkpoint. Both times, you will be required to present your passport for verification and validation. Filipino passport holders are not required to secure a visa to enter Malaysia provided you’ll only stay for a period of 30 days. Once cleared, you can proceed outside the building, take a toilet break, purchase snacks or convert bills to a money changer while waiting for your bus.

TRI-COUNTRY BUDGET TRIP LEG 2: KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at a Glance: Kuala Lumpur, officially the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and commonly known as KL, is the national capital and largest city in Malaysia. It is the cultural, financial and economic center of Malaysia, and one of the leading cities in the world for tourism and shopping, being the tenth most-visited city in the world in 2017. Named as one of the New7Wonders Cities, Kuala Lumpur has been ranked by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Ranking at No. 2 in Southeast Asia after Singapore.

Getting around Kuala Lumpur: We arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia around 4:30 AM, one hour earlier than the scheduled arrival. We alighted at Berjaya Times Square, a one-stop, one-shop complex for great shopping, dining and entertainment experience at the heart of the city. It has a 7 eleven store that’s open 24/7 while offering breakfast meals and other travel necessities and near a train station, same spot as the bus stop. The train line starts operating at 06:00 AM daily, but closing time varies depending on the station, but closed generally at twelve midnight. Taxi and grab car are available anytime.

Malaysia Amidst Covid-19 Outbreak : Covid-19 is not on the headline news during my visit in Malaysia, rather the resignation of Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. With his cabinet also dissolved, this shocking move will plunge the country into political crisis. Well, we’re just glad that our trip was not affected by the news whatsoever, giving us more time to continue on appreciating the beauty of the national capital of Malaysia, an Asian city above the clouds.

Tourist Spots in Kuala Lumpur: Our full day itinerary to Kuala Lumpur started off visiting Batu Caves. Batu Caves is located in 20 minutes away from the city proper. You can visit the temple complex inside by taking the colorful 272 steps leading to the mouth of the cave. You’d be surprised that Dataran Merdeka Historical Walk could be your favorite activity to do when in Kuala Lumpur. It features 12 closely located interesting sites including Merdeka Square, Sultan Abdul Saman Building, Abdul Saman Mosque, Kuala Lumpur City Gallery and more IG-worthy attractions.

Urban Renewal Project – Redefining Art: If Singapore has Haji Lane, Malaysia has Jalan Alor. Vibrant street murals have been hidden in plain sight in various back lanes in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. The once derelict back alleyways have now been utterly transformed into one great “urban renewal project”. From the vibrant flora and fauna to psychodelic rainbow motif, be on the hunt for these imaginative street graffiti, strike a pose and appreciate the story behind these alleyway masterpieces. It’s totally for FREE.

Highest Skyscrappers in Malaysia: Your visit to Kuala Lumpur would not be complete without taking a selfie with the famous KL Tower (officially known as Menara Kuala Lumpur) and Petronas Twin Towers. KL Tower is the 7th tallest freestanding tower in the world, wherein you can enjoy the panoramic view of the city via the Skybox (glass bottom observatory). Petronas Towers, Malaysia’s highest skyscrappers and one of the world’s tallest buildings, are utterly stunning – a marvelous sight to behold daytime or night. Plus, you can also enjoy a lot of shopping and dining options at Suria KLCC just beside Petronas Towers.

HOW TO GET TO BINTAN, INDONESIA FROM SINGAPORE

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

Situated just a ferry ride away from Singapore or Johor Bahru in Malaysia, most visitors enter Bintan by sea. From Singapore, there are various operators that offer frequent services from Tanah Merah Terminal in Singapore to Sri Bintan Pura Terminal at Tanjung Pinang and Bandar Bentan Telani Terminal at Bintan Resorts. We booked our round trip ferry from Klook with route from Tanah Merah Terminal to Lagoi Bintan Resorts (via Bandar Bentan Telani Ferry Teminal). Plying across the Singapore Strait, the motorized catamaran has comfy seats, entertainment facilities, toilet and canteen available on-board.

In order to reach Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal from your hotel in Singapore, head to Tanah Merah Station (via MRT) and take a bus (number 35 or 35M for 2.1 SGD fare) for 25 minutes. Upon arrival, head directly to the ticketing office inside the terminal for check-in and boarding procedures. Passenger(s) are advised to check-in and collect boarding passes at BRF or BBT Ticketing Counter at least one and half (1 1⁄2) hours before departure time. Please read the terms and conditions of the confirmed booking for more information.

Expect another immigration clearance and additional Covid-19 prevention standard procedures while in the ferry terminal and upon arrival as you are about to enter another country. Philippine passport holders can travel to Indonesia without the need for a visa if they will only stay there for one month or 30 days. Travel time from Singapore to Bintan, Indonesia is only an hour, with Indonesia’s time zone behind one hour than that of Singapore. The ferry’s estimated time of departure from Singapore is at 8:10 AM and estimated time of arrival in Bintan, Indonesia is also at 8:10 AM. With such time difference, it looked like you never left.

TRI-COUNTRY BUDGET TRIP LEG 3: BINTAN, RIAU, INDONESIA

Getting Around Bintan: Taxi and car rentals are commonly available at Ferry Terminals and also in resorts. Scooter rental is also available for those who love adventure and who’d choose a fun and more convenient way to explore the beaches around the Island.

To maximize our day tour in Bintan Island, we chartered a private car (good for 7 pax) for 5 hours with English-speaking driver. Make sure to book via Klook 2-3 days in advance for a smooth arrangement and score a discounted price. Rates for a weekday trip is cheaper compared to weekends. Upon arrival at the ferry terminal, your driver will meet you, most notable for someone who’s probably holding a placard with your name on it.

Bintan, Indonesia at a Glance: As the largest island in the Riau Island, Bintan Island is the perfect heavenly getaway for leisure and adventure seekers. Best known for its high-end resorts, world-class golf courses, and magnificent coastal beauty, Bintan Island never run out of things to do both indoor and outdoor, local foods to unwind your palate, new horizons to chase and holiday experience to savor. The weather in Bintan Island is generally sunny but between late November and early March, guests may experience strong winds and passing showers due to the northeast monsoon.

Attractions in Bintan: There’s more to Indonesia than the tourist-favored Bali or capital city Jakarta. Accessible by ferry from Singapore, the closest major city, Bintan Island could be the next traveler and urban fugitives’ dream destination. With so many alluring qualities of the largest island in Riau province, there are several attractions in this offbeat paradise that will surely satiate your wanderlust. If you’re into nature, then you’ll find Gurun Pasir Bentan (sand dunes) and Danau Biru (blue lake) worthy to be explored. Fine white sand beaches dotted the island of Bintan, too. Due to lack of time, I haven’t visited all of them in a day but I will surely return one of these days to explore the best offerings of this exotic tourism hub leisure island!

Temple Run at Bintan : Bintan Island offers more than pleasant resorts and natural wonders. Guan Yin Temple in Tanjung Pinang, for example, is one of the magnificent sights hosting unique stone sculptures and Buddhist artifacts. Locally known as Vihara Avalokitesvara Graha, it is the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia, with an area of 10 hectares of land. This serene place makes this destination a great escape for your trip to Bintan. Another temple note-worthy to visit when in Bintan is Lohan Temple, which was closed during our visit.

Shop and Dine at Bintan: Don’t leave Bintan Island without buying local crafts and beautiful merchandise from Plaza Lagoi. Restaurants and other retail stores can also be found in the area. Seafoods are abundantly being offered by most eateries around the area, but local cuisine such Nasi Goreng (Indonesian fried rice) is also a must-try. You can also visit Lagoi Bay just in front of Lagoi Plaza if you have more time to spare. Don’t worry if your car rental time is up, scheduled shuttle buses ply to Bandar Bentan Telani Ferry Terminal from Plaza Lagoi for free.

TRI-COUNTRY ITINERARY AND BUDGET

Before going to each country, it is advisable to have your money exchanged in the official currency per country of destination. While in the Philippines, you may want to buy Singapore Dollars (SGD) first in any money changer near you or at the airport. It doesn’t matter where to buy, any difference in rate is minimal. While in Singapore, before crossing the border to Malaysia, there is a money changer inside Golden Mile Tower ( where buses bound for KL depart ). You can purchase both Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) and Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) at the same money changer. As of travel date, the foreign exchange rates per currency are as follows:

  • 1 SGD = 36.4 PHP
  • 1 MYR = 12.07 PHP (0.33 SGD)
  • 1 IDR = 0.0037 PHP (0.000097 SGD)

In a nutshell, traveling to Singapore and its neighboring countries Malaysia and Indonesia is not really that expensive. It’s high time that we change our wrong perception about traveling to Southeast Asian countries, especially Singapore as pricey and can make you “Singa-POOR”. Kidding aside, hope we can start acknowledging that traveling abroad can also be budget-friendly. With only Php 15,000 budget, you can definitely survive tri-country trip and at same time, experience the best of what each respective Southeast Asian country has to offer.

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

Spending Php 15,000 (all-in) for a 4 days, 3 nights (4D3N) tri-country trip is really doable when you carefully plan where to go, the spots you’d like to visit, foods to eat and travel must-haves to secure. Of course, there’s no one stopping you to splurge on food, souvenirs and other things that you can try for a minimal fee. This is just to make a reference that you can enjoy a 4D3N tri-country adventure on a budget, which in our case is Php 15,000 for everything related to travel costs from airfare to transportation. With this successful trip, I can’t wait to try another tri-country budget trip sometime in Q4 this year. This time, it’s Indochina: Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand.

A 3 week itinerary for singapore, malaysia and bali.

I bet you landed here thinking there is just no way that you can visit all of these Southeast Asian bucket list destinations in just 3 weeks, and that it was too good to be true, didn’t you? Well, you’d be wrong! I am going to share with you my tried and tested itinerary for a 3 week trip to Singapore, Malaysia and Bali , to help you plan yours! This itinerary will take you to 5 different places across these 3 destinations, and will allow you enough time to slow down a little along the way! What’s more, there’s a full disclosure of my (unbelievable) trip costs at the bottom of this post, and I took this trip during my annual leave from work (yes, you can travel and have a full time job)!

Where to stay in Singapore - Marina Bay

Why Singapore, Malaysia and Bali?

If you want some reasons why Singapore, Malaysia and Bali are the perfect combination of places to visit for a 3 week itinerary to Southeast Asia, then I’ve got three equally good ones. Firstly, these destinations are relatively close together on the map meaning air travel takes little time. Secondly, you can get an abundance of cheap flights in Southeast Asia, so you can travel between these countries cheaply , as well as quickly. And last but not least, why the heck shouldn’t they be the perfect combination , I mean, they are insane!?

Itinerary overview

Singapore (4 days) → Langkawi (5 days) → Kuala Lumpur (4 days) → Bali (6 days) Allow 2 days for international travel for this itinerary for Singapore, Malaysia and Bali: 1 day outbound and 1 day inbound (depending on your home departure country)

Know before you go

Always  check the entry requirements  for the country you are visiting to see if you will need a Visa to enter, and that you have enough validity left on your passport.

Always have a  good level of travel insurance  for every international trip. This is a non-negotiable part of any trip abroad, as the unexpected can happen.

When to visit

Singapore: The climate in Singapore remains hot and humid year-round. However, it can be rainy throughout the year, with heavier showers in December and January.

Langkawi, Malaysia: Heavier showers can occur in September and October, but can also occur year round, and the climate is tropical.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The rainy season is April-October but showers can occur year-round, and the climate is hot and humid.

Bali, Indonesia: April-September is dry season, October-March is wet season, temperatures are consistently high 20°C’s all year round.

I went on this trip in October and got very soggy in Bali on one occasion (through to my underwear, wading through flooded streets of Ubud kind of soggy), with one short lived tropical downpour . Overall, the weather across all destinations was dry and sunny. It was especially hot and humid in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur which was expected!

Tegalalang Rice Terraces near Ubud - Ultimate 3 Week Itinerary for Singapore, Malaysia and Bali [+ Trip Costs]!

Singapore: Singapore Dollar

Malaysia: Malaysian Ringgit

Bali, Indonesia : Indonesian Rupiah

International departure: Day 1

Day 1: Allow at least 1 full day to be lost for international travel to Southeast Asia if you are travelling from outside the region.

Singapore: Day 2-5

On the face of it, you may think that Singapore is an ultra modern city with a phenomenal skyline , and you’d be right. But, dig a little deeper and you will realise that it is also a vibrantly multicultural hive of activity with bustling and colourful neighbourhoods like Little India and Chinatown. You could easily spend more time in Singapore, but 4 days is a good amount to get a taste of the city and see some of the wonderful sights on offer (if you like it, you can go back in future, or at least that’s how I look at it)!

Supertree Grove - Ultimate 3 Week Itinerary for Singapore, Malaysia and Bali [+ Trip Costs]!

Day 2: Take a pre-booked transfer or use the Metro to get into Singapore City, and check in to your Singapore accommodation . Spend some time getting acclimatised to Southeast Asia and get familiar with your surroundings – take a wander, get lost, and explore ! Head to Marina Bay for your first glimpse at the spectacular skyline. Grab a cold Tiger, and rest and recuperate after your long journey, ready for the ultimate 3 week adventure across Southeast Asia!

Tip: I used a pre-booked shared airport shuttle bus on arrival, from Singapore Changi Airport to my hotel. This is because I arrived at 3:05am and the Metro was not in operation at this time. However, if I’d have arrived at a decent hour I would have used public transport (as I did to return to the airport on day 6) as it is cheap, quick and easy.

Day 3: Spend your day in the Marina Bay area of Singapore , exploring all there is to offer, including Gardens by the Bay . Be sure to stay in this area as day turns to night. Supertree Grove has a spectacular light and sound show, and Marina Bay an unmissable light, sound and water show.

Day 4 & 5: Spend two days soaking up some of the best things to see and do in Singapore . Be sure to explore the various districts of the city, such as the beautifully vibrant Little India and the bustling streets of Chinatown . Make sure you feast on some spicy and aromatic Indian cuisine whilst you are in Little India (there is no shortage of restaurants and you won’t regret it).

Tip: I ate at Komala Vilas Restaurant on Serangoon Road in Little India on my trip to Singapore; a bustling Indian vegetarian restaurant which serves the most flavoursome and authentic food! If you are a fan of Indian food, you should definitely plan to visit (plus, it’s really affordable)!

Pantai Cenang, Langkawi: Day 6-10

Langkawi is a relaxed tropical paradise and is the perfect destination to inject a bit of peace and tranquillity into your Southeast Asian itinerary. It will allow you to slow down a little, enjoy your surroundings, and reflect on your time in bustling Singapore! I opted to stay in the popular town of Pantai Cenang , and although it’s known as the busiest town on the island, it retains its chilled beach town vibe. I decided to stay on Langkawi for 5 nights, because I wanted enough time to experience some of the best things to do in 4 days and have time to relax, but you could stay for less if time is tight .

Cenang Beach - Ultimate 3 Week Itinerary for Singapore, Malaysia and Bali [+ Trip Costs]!

Day 6: Head to Singapore Changi Airport using the Metro. Catch an early flight to Langkawi to maximise the time you have there and avoid losing a whole day to air travel. Take a taxi to your hotel in Pantai Cenang and settle in. Take a wander around to get familiar with your surroundings. Then, perhaps relax by the pool before heading out for your first taste of Malaysian cuisine .

Tip: When I visited Langkawi, the airport taxis had a fixed rate and you purchased a ticket at one of the booths inside the airport before proceeding to your taxi outside the terminal.

Day 7: Enjoy a day at the expansive and palm tree lined Cenang Beach (watch out for the jellyfish). Watch the sunset with Piña colada in hand at a beachside bar in a hammock chair. Then, perhaps head off and find a kiosk where you can purchase some questionable fried ice cream !

Tip: Langkawi is a tax free island, so there are lots of duty free outlets (you can find these in Pantai Cenang). So, you can certainly afford to enjoy an ice cold beer by the pool whilst watching the aeroplanes glide through the sky (the airport is only a 15 minute drive from Pantai Cenang so these are quite low flying).

Day 8: Head out for the day to Langkawi SkyCab and Skybridge and test whether you’ve got a head for heights or jelly legs (like me)!

Day 9: Take a day trip to Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and hope a monkey doesn’t jump on your boat (because it did during my trip).

Tip: You can easily book a tour to Kilim Geoforest Park online before you depart for your trip. However, if you aren’t a pre-planner then you should be able to book this through your hotel or a local tour agency shop in Pantai Cenang (like you can in most countries in Southeast Asia).

Day 10: Spend your final day doing a bit of shopping in Pantai Cenang and feasting on Malaysian delights, relaxing by the pool and wandering along the beach. Travel can be exhausting and doesn’t have to always be fast paced !

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Day 11-14

I didn’t really develop a bond with Kuala Lumpur like I do inevitably seem to when I travel to most destinations. I can’t really pinpoint why. Nevertheless, I would recommend visiting for a few days if you are in Southeast Asia. The city has some fantastic sights to see and you should always see somewhere once, right? I wouldn’t hesitate to go back despite my distant relationship with the city!

Batu Caves near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Day 11: Take a pre-booked taxi (you should be able to book this through your hotel) to Langkawi International Airport and fly the short distance to Kuala Lumpur . Use public transport to get to your hotel – I chose to stay in WP Hotel in Kuala Lumpur because the allure of the rooftop pool was too much! Find a rooftop bar or pool and enjoy the skyline light up from day to night , before heading out for dinner.

Tip : Using public transport to get to and from Kuala Lumpur International Airport is a cinch – just grab yourself a return ticket for the airport train (the KLIA express) and then use the Metro to reach your hotel!

Day 12: Do a day trip to the Batu Caves . Climb the many, many steps into the caves where you may see cheeky monkeys grabbing each other’s tails.

Tip: You don’t need to book on a guided tour to the Batu Caves. It is super easy and cheap to get there yourself by taking the local KTM Commuter Train to and from Kuala Lumpur. Just make sure you check the timetable before heading to the station!

Day 13 & 14: Spend your final two days in Malaysia doing some of the best things to see and do in Kuala Lumpur , such as visiting temples, Central Market and Chinatown ! Be sure to head across to the Petronas Towers late afternoon whilst you are in the city, so you can watch them light up the sky as the sun sets over Southeast Asia.

Bali, Indonesia: Day 15-20

If I had to choose anywhere in the world to live, then it would be Bali (more specifically Ubud, in case you’re interested). I am a massive fan of this small island which is overflowing with serenity. I remember instantly feeling at home on my first trip to Bali, which is a feeling I rarely get when travelling (apart from the time I spent 2 weeks in Vietnam). Bali has a mix of breathtaking landscapes and has an abundance of things to see and do , and I have no doubt that you will fall as hard as I did for this Indonesian paradise. Days could quite easily turn to weeks here, and it really is the island of Eat, Pray, Love !

Campuhan Ridges Walk - Ultimate 3 Week Itinerary for Singapore, Malaysia and Bali [+ Trip Costs]!

Day 15: Head to Kuala Lumpur International Airport using public transport, bound for an early flight to beautiful Bali . Head to your hotel in Kuta using a pre-booked private transfer, before going out for some lunch in this lively beach town (be sure to try Nasi Goreng). I stayed in Transera Kamini Hotel (technically in Legian but a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Kuta), but there is an abundance of beautiful places to stay in Kuta . Spend the evening on the beach watching the sunset with a cold Bintang in hand!

Tip: Early flights are the best for maximising your time in each destination. Although they can be a little more expensive, it can sometimes be worth paying the extra so you can have more time on the ground!

Day 16: Travel in your pre-booked private transfer to Ubud . Go for a wander to get your bearings and have a look around. If your hotel is as beautiful as where I stayed, which was Sri Aksata Ubud Resort (highly recommended), then you won’t be able to resist enjoying some downtime in your hotel . Head out for dinner and eat Mie Goreng ! You should be sure to eat at The Fair Warung Bale whilst you are in Ubud as the food is super tasty and the profits help to fund local healthcare programmes – you may want to pre-book a table as it is a pretty popular restaurant!

Tip: Pick a serene hotel situated in the rice fields (just make sure you pack mosquito repellant). Ubud has an abundance of beautiful accommodation, and you can easily find hotels situated in the rice fields that are very central, for a balance between tranquility and being close to the hustle and bustle of Ubud town.

Ubud Monkey Forest, Bali

Day 17: Today, get yourself up early and spend some time sightseeing in Ubud . Why not go for a massage or spa treatment to relax after a busy day sightseeing, before heading out for some tasty Balinese Cuisine? One of the top travel tips for Bali is to embrace the spas but don’t overspend, because affordable and good quality establishments are plentiful on the island!

Day 18 & 19: Spend a couple of days doing some of the best day trips from Ubud . You will be absolutely spoiled for choice when deciding on which day trips to do, and have various options at your fingertips such as swimming beneath a waterfall , visiting a sacred temple , wandering a coffee plantation , doing an adventurous activity or meandering through some rice terraces !

Tip: Pre-booked private cars are very affordable in Bali. You can request to be taken to the places of interest that suit you in style, whether its waterfalls, temples, or rice terraces! And, these are great to use for your transfers to and from the airport, and in between towns (such as from Kuta to Ubud). I have always used Bali Safest Driver for custom tours and private transfers – the service has always been friendly, prompt and prices are reasonable!

Day 20: Get yourself up early to hike the Campuhan Ridge Walk , and have lunch at a restaurant at the end. Save the final afternoon for re-visiting any places in Ubud you want to see again, grab a souvenir or two at the market , or have some time to chill out in a café and watch life (and a lot of mopeds) pass you by.

Tip: Karsa Café is my absolute favourite café to stop in after walking the Campuhan Ridge Walk. I have visited each time I’ve been to Bali (and I don’t need any amount of persuading to go back). The views across the paddy fields and rice terraces are stunning, and the atmosphere is so serene. If you’re lucky you will manage to seat yourself in one of the stilted huts above the pond.

Return home: Day 21

Day 21: Allow at least 1 full day to be lost for international travel from Southeast Asia if you are travelling from outside the region.

Itinerary summary

This itinerary gives the perfect balance between spending time in the bustling cities of Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, and on the idyllic islands of Bali and Langkawi. It offers enough time to indulge in some amazing sights and experiences , whilst also providing the time to just slow down and immerse yourself in your surroundings, whether that be by spending a morning by the pool or enjoying a drink on the beach whilst watching the world go by. I hope this 3 week itinerary for Singapore, Malaysia and Bali provides you with all the inspiration and information that you need to take a multi-country trip around Southeast Asia. 5 Days Trip to Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia

I didn’t think that my 2019 would start in a very interesting way! I visited Dalat once again in Jan after the last time I went there at the end of 2018. Then in the last days of Jan, I did a 5 days trip to Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Yes, 5 days trip in 3 countries. That could be so short to do everything. However, it was still enough to take my first steps in new lands and to have my experience in destinations that I hadn’t been to before.

Why I Chose Batam and Cameron Highlands

ticket of 5 days trip to singapore, indonesia, malaysia

I just planned to visit my girlfriend in Singapore. Then she suggested I travel around rather than spend my whole vacation in only a city. So I chose Indonesia and Malaysia, the two nearby countries of Singapore.

I actually haven’t visited Indonesia before. Hence, I chose Batam, an Indonesian island that’s very near Singapore, which is the middle point of both Indonesia and Malaysia. Also, it was kinda easy to access Batam from Singapore.

Then I picked Cameron Highlands in Malaysia, a pretty similar place to Dalat , Vietnam. With its location in the high mountains, Cameron Highlands has cold weather over the year. By that, the land is very developed in agriculture, particularly in growing tea trees, flowers, and fruits, especially strawberries. Therefore, Cameron Highlands is beautiful with the tea hills and the greenhouses. If you live in a place like Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam where it’s hot all the time, you will know why I prefer a cold place like Cameron Highlands.

How to Go from Singapore to Batam, or Cameron Highlands

From singapore to batam, indonesia.

The best way to go to Batam from Singapore is by taking a ferry. Mostly, the ferry operators charge around $10 – $15 SGD for one way. Nevertheless, you can find a promo ticket at $6 SGD sometimes at a point in the day. My friend used a ticket search engine to book the route going to Batam from Singapore . We had a really better price than on the ferry operators’ websites.

From Singapore to Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

To save money for transportation, and to take advantage of the nighttime, I chose a night bus to go from Singapore to Cameron Highlands. It was simple to book with the bus ticket search engine . As planned, I will go specifically from Singapore at 9.30 p.m. and will arrive in Brinchang, a town of Cameron Highlands, at around 7 a.m.

The 5 Days Itinerary from Singapore to Batam, then Cameron Highlands

First day – to batam, indonesia.

After arriving at Changi Airport, Singapore, I and my girlfriend went directly to Harbourfront, where we took a ferry to Batam Island , Indonesia. It took about 1 hour to get to the island.

the harbour gate to enter batam, indonesia. The first day in 5 days trip to Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia

We actually didn’t have any plan when going to Batam. So we initially got a taxi and went straight to the hotel. At Batam, you can easily find 3 or 4-star hotels with good prices, as far as I saw. On the way to the island, you can see many ads about Harris Hotel , which could be a pretty good choice. Its location is right near the harbor, and quite close to Batam Centre. However, we chose Zia Boutique Hotel , a more affordable price but also equivalent in service, and it was suitable for our needs.

After checking in at the hotel and organizing the luggage, we needed to find a place for dinner. The receptionist told us about WTB, an area right at the bottom of the word ‘Welcome to Batam’ , where many Indonesian people sell local foods. That would be a great place for dinner, especially to try Indonesian cuisine. Furthermore, you may be able to take some great photos with the welcome words.

WTB, an area right in the bottom of the word 'Welcome to Batam', where many Indonesian people sell local foods

Wandering around the Batam Centre could be a good option to generally see the life on the island. And that was even a better choice when we had no sim or wifi to catch a taxi or Grab. We then walked to the Mega Mall Batam Centre, after dinner, to both see around the city and to find a taxi to go back to the hotel, the end of our first day.

Day 2 – 1 Day in 3 Countries

batam city in the morning. The second day in 5 days trip to Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia

We started our morning with the breakfast served at the hotel. And then figured out some places that we could visit. Many tours would suggest Vihara Duta Maitreya temple, Batam Miniature, Pineapple Cake, Be Superheroes, Chocolate House, or many beautiful beaches around the island. Moreover, you may want to try the traditional massage of Indonesian.

Nevertheless, as we didn’t have much time on the island, we would love an experience in which we could see the whole island, or at least have a general view. Therefore, we chose to visit a spot called Ex Camp Vietnam, or Galang Refugee Camp . The destination is a historical site where the Vietnamese took refuge from the Vietnam War. At the place, you can learn more about the life of the refugees when they left Vietnam by small boats. Of course, not so many people were alive to step on the new lands. Additionally, the Camp is located on Galang Island , which is the very South of Batam Island. Therefore, by going to the place, we can also have a general view of the whole 3 islands. Honestly, I love doing that than going to a beach, which I have been to a lot last year.

galang refugee camp, ex camp vienam, batam island, indonesia

Actually, Batam Island connects to Rempang Island and Galang Island. On the way to the Camp, we got through Barelang Bridge , the longest suspension bridge that connects the strait, also connects the islands there. Talking about the bridge, the locals are very proud of the construction. At the area of Ex Camp Vietnam on Galang Island, we visited Batam Pulau Galang , a Vietnamese pagoda that has a pretty nice view of the island. And it has some good background for any photographer.

barelang bridge, an icon of Batam island, Indonesia

We left Batam Island at around 2 p.m. and arrived in Singapore at 4 p.m. local time. My friend has a house in Singapore so we came there for a quick rest before going to Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. The plan was to take a night bus to save our travel time. The bus left the station at 9:30 p.m., and we crossed the Singapore – Malaysia border at approximately 11:30 p.m. Hence, it wasn’t really a 5-day trip in 3 countries, but we even did 1 day in 3 countries. And that was so cool!

Day 3 – Hello Cameron Highlands!

landscape at Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

The bus dropped us at Brinchang , a settlement of Cameron Highlands , at around 7 a.m. As it was not the right time to check in the hotel, we took a walk down to the center of Brinchang for breakfast. At the destination, Brinchang looked like an old district with a lot of old houses, and restaurants opened by locals, the Malaysian Chinese. Therefore, at Brinchang, you can easily find a lot of Chinese foods. There was only one KFC restaurant for anyone who wasn’t familiar with Chinese cuisine.

on the way going to downtown Brinchang, cameron highlands, malaysia

We then came back to the hotel – Wan Alyasa Hotel to check in and started our day exploring the land. In the area, you can take a taxi and go to 3 spots within 3 hours for $75 Malaysian Ringgit (RM). There are no other options such as Grab, or public transport. You can only take a taxi, or hire a motorbike if you have an international driving license. Hence, a taxi to us was the best choice. We visited BOH Sungai Palas Tea Centre , Lavender Garden , and Tanah Rata , a very tourist area. Cameron Highlands, overall, is very similar to Da Lat. Therefore, you can easily take a lot of beautiful photos of the land.

Taxi at Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

That was a kinda cold day, especially at night. We ended our day with an iconic hotpot, the Charcoal Steamboat . That was awesome! The hotpot always was the best choice for a cold day. Particularly at Brinchang, almost all Chinese restaurants serve this hotpot for dinner.

Day 4 – A Long Day on the Bus

We woke up early to have breakfast, then left Cameron Highlands at around 8:30 a.m. by the bus we had booked . That was really a long day on the bus. It took us approximately 10 hours to come back to Singapore. I can still remember the moment I and my girlfriend had to share our only neck pillow to prevent neck pain when sitting on the bus for a very long time. However that made our good memory!

On the other hand, that night in Singapore was perfect. We awarded ourselves after a hard day with the hotpot at Haidilao restaurant . It was the best restaurant and the best hotpot I have ever tried. This is not an advertisement, but this is definitely the have-to-experience restaurant in Singapore. I must absolutely do a review about Haidilao soon.

Haidilao Hotpot, one of the best Singapore food

That day ended up after we strolled around Orchad Road . Actually, we planned to go to Clarke Quay, but we were so tired.

Day 5 – Goodbye Singapore!

I always love to start a day in Singapore with Kaya Toast and half-cooked eggs , the traditional breakfast of the country. After breakfast, me and my friend wandered around the city, starting from Takashimaya Mall , to Bugis , then a mall near our accommodation. As the day was pretty close to the Lunar New Year, Singapore was decorated pretty nicely at places we went to, and people sold a lot of things for the special occasion.

Kaya Toast with Half-cooked eggs, the iconic traditional Singapore breakfast

At around 1 p.m., I went to Changi Airport and had lunch there before getting on the plane to fly back to Vietnam, ending up an enjoyable 5 days trip to Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

4-10 Day Singapore Malaysia Itinerary: Enjoy The Perfect Singapore And Malaysia Trip!

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary For 4-10 Days

Day 1 – arrive in singapore.

 Gardens By The Bay Singapore

Today is an introduction to Singapore.

  • Start the day at Gardens by the Bay. Visit the conservatories and OCBC Skyway ( tickets here) where you walk among the futuristic trees. If you have kids, take bathers and also visit the childrens gardens. This is my favourite attraction in all of Singapore so don’t skip it! If you are on a budget, it’s still worth coming and walking around for free.
  • Have lunch in the shopping centre at the base of the iconic Marina Bay Sands which is right next to Gardens by the Bay.
  • Take the short train trip to Clarke Quay and walk though here and the historic Fort Canning on your way to the next attraction.
  • Spend the afternoon at the National Museum of Singapore ( discount tickets here ).

Day 2 – Singapore

Singapore's Chinatow

Today is all about discovering Singapore’s three main cultural groups.

  • Start the day with some breakfast in Little India and then visit Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple.
  • Walk to the nearby Malay area of Kampong Glam. Visit the Malay Heritage Centre and Sultan Mosque before having some Malay food for lunch.
  • Finish with some temple visits in Chinatown before shopping for souvenirs at the markets here and having some great Chinese food for dinner.

Day 3 – Singapore

Sentosa Island and merlion

Your final day in Singapore is all about fun, Sentosa Island style! Sentosa Island is a small island just off the tip of Singapore which is easily reached by public transport, cable car or even walking over. It’s packed full of fun attractions and is Singapore’s playground.

It’s full of top class facilities and just walking around is fun. There are so many different attractions that it’s hard for me to say exactly what you should add to your Singapore Malaysia trip itinerary. It depends on your interests and budget as the attractions can be expensive and add up quickly. There are also many free attractions on Sentosa which you may prefer to stick to.

Here are my top recommendations:

  • Start by heading to the Merlion Plaza and taking a photo of the Sentosa sign with the giant merlion as pictured above. Consider climbing up inside the Merlion Tower for great views ( tickets here ).
  • Take the Skyline Luge and chair lift. This is one of our favourites!
  • For more adrenaline rushes, try Mega Adventure where you can zipline and take a 15 metre jump or fly at iFly !
  • Visit easily one of the best aquariums in the world at S.E.A. Aquarium ( tickets here ).
  • If you have kids, visit the Palawan Pirate Ship. A free (and amazing) water playground.
  • Walk to the Southern Most Point of Continental Asia.
  • Enjoy the beaches
  • Visit Fort Siloso and learn some WWII history

In the evening, head to the free light shows at Resorts World Sentosa.

I also recommend you take the cable car over one way ( discount tickets here ). The views are great! I also love Universal Studios Singapore but with one day, I would go to a few different attractions instead rather than spending the day at one so you get a better taste of Sentosa Island.

To save money and time, buy attraction tickets beforehand at Klook. We have saved so much money this way. Click here for many options.

There is also the Sentosa Fun Pass that can save you a lot of money. You basically buy a number of tokens and then exchange these tokens at various attractions on the island. The number you need depends on what you want to see. I suggest you will at least want 80.

You can find the Sentosa Fun Pass here and information about how many tokens are required for each attraction here.

Where To Stay In Singapore

Here are our best options for each budget. Pick the one that best suits you.

LUXURY: Marina Bay Sands

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

For luxury and the ultimate Singapore experience, you can’t go past the Marina Bay Sands, one of the most iconic hotel buildings in the world.

Have great views over Singapore as you relax in the infinity pool or visit the Sands SkyPark Observation Deck. Shop and eat in the downstairs shopping centre or enjoy one of the many hotel restuarants or room service. You can use the gym, day spa or simply have a drink at the pool bar.

There are a range of room types with doubles and twins on offer. All are spacious and well appointed and have everything you would expect in a 5 star hotel. You can pick the view you want and there are suites for extra luxury with their own living area.

In addition to staying in a fabulous hotel, you are also just moments walk away from Gardens By The Bay and other top Singapore attractions and there is a subway station below the hotel making sightseeing easy. This is the ultimate Singapore hotel and you have to stay here at least once!

Click here for the latest prices.

MIDRANGE: Village Hotel Bugis

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

The Village Hotel Bugis is our favourite hotel for a mix of a great price, very convenient location and a good standard of rooms and facilties. Located close to Bugis MRT station and many shopping centres, it’s easy to get around to all of Singapore here. It’s also located in the Malay area, Kampong Glam, and a short walk from Little India.

There are a range of room types which are all comfortable and well appointed, if on the cosy side. This includes family options which makes this a great choice with kids – we have stayed here with ours multiple times.

The hotel also has a swimming pool, gym and restaurants.

BUDGET: Backpacker Cozy Corner Guesthouse

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

For bargain seekers, the Backpacker Cozy Corner Guesthouse is also located in a convenient location near Bugis MRT and has everything you need for a budget Singapore stopover with excellent value rooms for the location and price.

Rooms include air conditioning and wifi and there are 2, 3 and 4 people rooms available. To save money, they do not have private bathrooms.

Singapore And Malaysia Itinerary 4 days

If you have just 4 days, use your final day in your Singapore Malaysia itinerary 4 days to do a day trip into Malaysia. Below, there are a range of Malaysia day trip options. Click here to read them and pick one!

My personal favourite is a fun day at Legoland Malaysia , but pick whichever most appeals to you.

We can book a taxi for you for the day to take you into Malaysia and back into Singapore again. Click here and fill in the form with what you want and we’ll get back to you.

If you are only looking for a Singapore Malaysia itinerary 3 days then cut out one of the Singapore days above which is least appealing.

Want the Easiest (and BEST) Way to travel between Singapore and Malaysia?

We can book a taxi for you from anywhere in Malaysia to anywhere in Singapore for a great price.

A taxi is the best way to cross the border as you don’t have to leave the air-conditioned comfort of your vehicle.

Click here for prices and online booking.

Day 4 –Johor Bahru

Legoland Malaysia

It’s time to say a sad goodbye to Singapore before heading over the causeway to more adventures in Malaysia!

There is more information below about how to travel between Malaysia and Singapore. It’s very straightforward.

We can also hire a taxi for you which picks you up at your hotel in Singapore and drops you off at your hotel in Johor Bahru for just SG$90. Click here to book and for more details.

Today, you will have a great day at Legoland Malaysia. You can buy discounted tickets here.

Day 5 – Johor Bahru And Melaka

Central Johor Bahru

This morning, it’s time to see some of Johor Bahru before catching a bus in the afternoon to Melaka.

  • Head to central Johor Bahru near the causeway to Singapore. You can do some shopping or explore the streets to the west of the main strip here. Some are quite pretty and it’s a nice area to stroll around. Eat lunch before leaving Johor Bahru.
  • Take a taxi to the main bus station in Johor Bharu, Larkin Bus Terminal, and then take a bus to Melaka. You can book bus tickets here on some great bus services. The bus takes about three hours and I recommend you book a bus for the early afternoon.
  • Take a taxi to your hotel, freshen up and head to Jonker Street in the evening. If it’s Friday or Saturday night, enjoy the night market, but there are plenty of places to eat any night on this famous strip.

Note that Melaka and Malacca are different ways to spell the same place.

If you have your own vehicle on this journey, I recommend stopping at Muar on your way. It does not take much extra time to do this, but Muar is a pretty city with some great street art and is a great plae to break up the journey.

Read more about Muar here.

Where To Stay In Johor Bahru

Luxury: doubletree by hilton hotel johor bahru.

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

Located just minutes from the Causeway in a convenient location, the DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru is a great choice if you want a luxury hotel which is easy to use as a base to explore both Johor Bahru and Singapore.

Despite not being rated as a five-star hotel, it is our top pick of the options near the Causeway. It has first class facilities including a stunning outdoor swimming pool on the 13th floor, four restaurants, gym, steam room, spa and wifi.

Each of the hotel’s spacious guest rooms have everything you would expect from a top option such as air conditioning, TV, tea and coffee making facilities and a pillow menu. There are also larger suites with separate living areas as well as rooms which are apartment style and have a kitchenette with washing machine. All this for a great price!

MIDRANGE: Puteri Pacific Johor Bahru

hourly rate hotel in Johor Bahru

For a midrange price option, you can’t go past the Puteri Pacific Johor Bahru. Also well located near the Causeway and shopping, this is a great base for Singapore and Johor Bahru exploration.

There are many facilities at this hotel. You can use the tennis and squash courts, a gym, sauna and a yoga studio.  Other facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, a day spa, three onsite restaurants and bars.

There are a range of accommodation options at this hotel. In addition to standard hotel rooms, you can book a room with a separate living and sleeping area or even a room with a kitchenette.

BUDGET: Baguss Hotel And Serviced Apartment

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

For a real bargain, consider the Baguss Hotel and Serviced Apartments. Close to the Causeway and downtown shopping areas, this standard, 3-star hotel is especially a great choice for families and groups looking for accommodation.

There are a range of hotel rooms suitable from two to four people. Each hotel room includes air conditioning, a TV, wifi, tea and coffee making facilities and a refrigerator. For larger groups, there are 3 bedroom apartments which can accommodate up to 6 people. These apartments include a kitchen and lounge room.

Find more Johor Bahru accommodation options here.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary 5 Days

If you are looking for a 5 days 4 nights Singapore Malaysia itinerary then you can do the five days above and head back to Singapore to fly out on day 5 instead of on to Melaka.

You could also consider spending all 5 days in Singapore and just taking a day trip to Johor Bahru. If money isn’t an issue, this is a good choice. Otherwise, it is more budget friendly to stay in Johor Bahru accommodation.

If Melaka sounds interesting to you, you could also follow the first four days above and then do a day trip to Melaka on the final day of your Singapore Malaysia 5 days itinerary ( find one here ). This is a long day but I have done it myself and it’s very doable.

You can also hire a private taxi here for the day to travel quickly and easily to Malaysia for the day.

Day 6 – Melaka

Melaka's pretty waterfront

Today is all about exploring Melaka’s historic centre and Chinatown before heading to your final stop, Kuala Lumpur, in the evening.

Get your walking legs on! Everything mentioned here is close and, while you can take taxis or trishaws to get around, the attractions are so close together that there is no real need.

  • Start at the Sultanate Palace where you can walk through a replica of the palace of Sultan Mansur Shah who ruled Melaka from 1456 to 1477.
  • Take a photo of Porta de Santiago and explore the ruins of St Paul’s Church.
  • Walk downhill to Stradthuys, the town hall and governor’s residence that dates back to the Dutch in 1650. Trishaws tend to congregate here so you can go on a ride on one if you like.
  • Walk over the river to Chinatown and head to 8 Heeren Street to check out this 18th century Dutch period residence.
  • Next, walk through Chinatown to Baba and Nonya Heritage Centre.
  • By now, you have probably worked up an appetite. Eat some lunch.
  • Finish your Melaka day tour by visiting three temples all close together: Cheng Hoon Temple, Masjid Kampung Kling and Sri Poyatha Venayagar Moorthi Temple.

In the late afternoon, catch your onward bus to Kuala Lumpur. This takes about 2.5 hours and I recommend booking a bus from 3-4pm.

Click here to book it now.

On arrival, check in to your hotel. If you feel like going out, head to the night markets in Petaling Street or Jalan Alor.

You can find our recommend hotels in Kuala Lumpur here.

Where To Stay In Melaka

Luxury: casa del rio melaka .

Located in a premium position just 300 metres from Jonker Street and right by the river, you will find the best option in Melaka, the stunning 5-star luxury boutique hotel, Casa del Rio Melaka Hotel.

Some suites even include an outdoor spa.

This hotel features first-class facilities with a stunning infinity swimming pool offering views across the Melaka River as well as three restaurants, a gym, a rooftop garden and day spa.

MIDRANGE: Swiss-Garden Hotel Melaka

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary For 7 Days

Merlion statue fountain in Merlion Park and Singapore city skyline

If you are looking for a 6 nights 7 days Singapore Malaysia itinerary you could stop right here. This does mean that you don’t have much time in Kuala Lumpur. If you would prefer some time in Kuala Lumpur (which I do recommend), drop either Johor Bahur or Melaka, whichever appeals less. It’s easy to get buses from Singapore to Melaka directly or from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur.

You can then pick a day or two from the following three recommmend days in Kuala Lumpur for your Singapore Malaysia itinerary 7 days.

Days 7-9 Kuala Lumpur

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

Three days in Kuala Lumpur is a great amount of time to get a good taste of this city on your Malaysia Singapore trip.

You can read my full (and detailed) itinerary for 3 days in Kuala Lumpur here.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary For 10 Days

If you have 10 days, you can add an extra day to Kuala Lumpur using my suggestions in my 3 day itinerary article here .

You could also add an extra day to Singapore if that appeals more or if you want to do an activity there like visit Universal Studios. However, if you are looking for a Singapore Malaysia budget itinerary then the less time in more expensive Singapore, the less you will need to spend so Kuala Lumpur can be a better pick.

Batu Caves

Singapore And Malaysia Trip 10+ Days

If you have more than ten days, yay! There are so many great places that you can add on in Malaysia.

I have a full itinerary document here for Malaysia travel for ten days. This includes travelling to Ipoh, Penang and Langkawi after Kuala Lumpur so you can add one or all of these destinations to the itinerary above to create a plan for up to 17 days.

Click here to download it now.

If you want to visit Thailand as well, you can find itineraries here which include Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand as well as other south east Asia destinations.

Singapore To Malaysia Day Trip

Desaru Coast

If you don’t have time for a big Singapore Malaysia adventure then you may just with to take a one day trip to Malaysia from Singapore. With a timeframe of less than 5 days, this is what I recommend.

This is completely possible and you could spend a 1 day trip to Malaysia from Singapore doing one of the days in the itinerary above to Johor Bahru or Melaka. Just note with Melaka that you will spend a lot of time travelling over the day but it is highly possible – I have done it myself.

Singapore to Malaysia day trip ideas:

  • Legoland Malaysia: The easiest and maybe most fun suggestion is to spend a day at Legoland Malaysia. There are buses directly here from Singapore and it’s a fun and easy place to enjoy. More details here .
  • Johor Bahru: You can catch the local bus over the causeway and explore central Johor Bahru.
  • Melaka: You can either pay for an expensive day tour here (easiest option) or save on your Singapore Malaysia trip cost and take public transport from Singapore to Melaka and back again and explore Melaka on your own, as per day 6 above. The bus takes about four hours each way so buy your ticket in advance and go early.
  • Desaru Coast: This coastal area in Malaysia is just one hour from Singapore with a half-hour ferry ( buy here ) and half-hour shuttle and is perfect if you would like some white sandy beach time or to have some fun visiting attractions such as a huge water park, ostrich, fruit or crocodile farm.

The easiest way to day trip to Malaysia is in your own private taxi. We can hire you one of the day with a safe and reliable local operator. Click here to get a quote.

They can pick you up from your Singapore hotel and drop you off there again at the end of the day.

How To Travel From Singapore To Malaysia

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

Getting from Singapore to Malaysia could really not be easier. There are buses, planes, trains and even taxis across. It’s been streamlined as much as possible because it’s such a popular option with thousands of people doing it all the time.

The easiest way to get across the causeway from Singapore to Malaysia is to hire a private car and driver. These can be quite affordable for a family or small group and you can be picked up and dropped off wherever you like and don’t need to get out of the car at the border.

Click here for more details about hiring a private driver to take you to Malaysia . This starts at just SG$90 for up to 5 people.

You can also get a local taxi but they are less flexible. If you catch a Singaporean taxi, they can only drop you at Larkin Terminal in Johor Bahru. If you catch a Malaysian taxi, they can drop you off anywhere in Malaysia but can only pick you up Queen Street Bus Terminal. They also need to be especially licensed to do this – you can’t just take any taxi.

The cheapest (and still quite easy) way to get across is with public, local bus called the Causeway Bus. Note that with the bus, you will need to get off and back on again at both immigration points in Singapore and Malaysia with all your belongings. Once you are through, you simply wait for the next Causeway Bus to come along. You can catch it from:

  • Kranji MRT (route CW1) from SGD$1.50 (RM1.90 return)
  • Queens Street (route CW2) from SGD$3.50 (RM3.40 return)
  • Newton Circus (route CW5) from SGD$3.30 (RM3.40 return)

The buses stop along the way so you can also hop on elsewhere along the route.

If you need to get between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur then I recommend flying.  This is often a very good price and cuts out the longer journey. For further afield than KL, I also recommend flying.

If you are going across to Johor Bahru, Melaka or anywhere else south of Kuala Lumpur then going overland is the best choice. We can book you a taxi from anywhere in Singapore to anywhere in pensinular Malaysia, and there are direct buses too.

Backpacking TH-MY-SG-IND for 9 Days: Full Itinerary for 15k Pesos Each

Asia is full of wonders! There’s just too much to do and we only have a limited time to do all of the things on our lists. We only had 9 days to squeeze everything in – without sacrificing too much of our budget – for Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore-Indonesia. This is a DIY travel itinerary. 🙂

Table of Contents

Backpacking THAILAND – MALAYSIA – SINGAPORE – INDONESIA

A limitation of 30,000 Philippine pesos or roughly US$600 budget was set for this trip without compromising comfort, privacy, and food for the both of us. [ Read: 5000 Pesos Challenge: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia]

Check our facebook album ( link ) for other information. It has been shared by more than 7,000 people.

On this itinerary, I’ll show you how we made our 9 days of backpacking beautiful. We started in Thailand, then we head next to Malaysia via train , moved to Singapore via bus , and then sailed to Indonesia for a day trip and went back to Singapore, then to our homeland, Philippines, the most beautiful of all. [ Read : Singapore for a Day]

First things first, (especially for Filipino travelers) make sure to renew your passport 6 months before it expires , else your travel plans will be invalidated. Go to the nearest DFA office to renew your passport. Book return tickets and accommodations prior to leaving the country for a higher chance of not getting off-loaded. We booked our hotels via Agoda (optional: Booking.com ).

Immigration (F.A.Qs)

We’ve heard several horror stories about the immigration but don’t let it stop you from exploring. Frequently asked questions will most likely be:

a. How many days are you gonna be in – insert country here -? -Be honest. b. When are you coming back? -Tell them your date of the flight back to Manila. So it’s better if you book flight tickets back early on. c. Where are you going to stay once you’re there?   backpacking -Show them your accommodation documents. If staying with a friend, show them the address or the map. d. Do you have a companion traveling with you? -Girlfriend, boyfriend, best friend, relatives, etc. e. What’s your job/business? How many years have you been working in the company? -Just tell them the truth. Office jobs are more likely to be accepted instantly. Freelancers, however, are being questioned more. Tell them everything they need to know especially if it’s your first out of the country trip and just be confident in answering the questions. PS: I am a freelancer. I was only asked 3 questions because the officer saw my Japan visa .

People who had passport stamps before gets easier interviews in the immigration.

Whatever your reason for leaving the country, just put a smile and be confident every time. Some officers would really ask you questions pertaining to what type of work you do, how much money do you have, can you support yourself outside the country, etc, because they need to know if you’re going back to your home country.

1. Taxi prices may vary according to the traffic situation, location, and other several factors. Taxi in Thailand was relatively cheap. Taxi in Singapore was very expensive, as much as possible avoid taking a taxi. 2. I only included the entrance fees and commute expenses, food depends on how much you want to consume. 3. If there is no price indicated, that means it was FREE. 4. Yes, I took note of all our expenses for the whole trip – because we have a fixed budget. 5. This is not a packaged tour. It was our itinerary based on our experience. 6. If you’re a couple (like us), book a private room. If you’re in groups, book a dorm room (price per bed, thus, cheaper). 7. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Don’t forget to like and follow our page !   backpacking

Tour itinerary

Malaysian capital, kuala lumpur, batu caves, bird park, petronas towers and light show.

We begin our family tour by arriving in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia and check into a 4* hotel. We get acquainted with the group and the tour leader and rest. For dinner, go to the most popular food street - Jalan Alor. Vegetarians and meat-eaters, lovers of vegetables, tofu, and seafood fans - here everyone will find suitable dishes. Delicious!

The next morning we take the subway to Batu caves. Discovered by British naturalists in the middle of the wild jungle in 1878, these caves soon became revered by local Hindus. Here they installed a statue of the god Murugan almost 43 meters high. Inside the caves there are two small temples, and the walls and huge ceilings are decorated with curly stalactites. Thin streams of light illuminate these huge caves, where only birds and monkeys lived recently.

We lunch in one of the popular vegetarian restaurants near the caves, and then take the subway to the largest open bird park in the world! Birds of all colors and sizes walk and fly next to you, you can even feed them special food. The park boasts lakes, streams and even an artificial waterfall. Here you forget that you are in the center of a modern metropolis. Children and adults love this place! In the evening we walk around the symbol of the country - the twin towers of Petronas and watch the famous light show of musical fountains.

Singapore, Marina bay sands hotel, Gardens by the bay, Light show

After breakfast we go to the airport and fly to Singapore (one and a half hour flight). We check into a 4* hotel, rest and after lunch begin our walk in the center of the most modern country in the world! We visit the rooftop of the famous Marina Bay Sands Hotel, which resembles a ship, take a walk near the fountains and explore the super modern futuristic Gardens by the Bay.

These artificial trees are capable of many things! For example, they collect rainwater and use it to irrigate real plants automatically. In the evening we will watch the famous light show.

One of the best zoo in the world, Night safari, Chinatown, Temple of The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

Next morning we start with a visit to one of the best zoos in the world. Children will be delighted with penguins, polar bears, and proboscis monkeys, and most animals will not be separated from visitors by the fence. Imagine unforgettable emotions when feeding a giraffe!

If you ever wondered what animals do after dark, you will have a chance to find out by visiting the world's first night wildlife park “Night Safari”.

After lunch we stroll through the historic Chinatown, where we visit the country's main Buddhist temple. For dinner we head to the famous food court, where the locals are queuing for dishes featured in newspapers. We will advise only the most delicious!

  • Joanna_Luvs_2_Travel 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome tour with Audis and Mr Yee Long day started at 5-6AM ended at about 8-9 PM. But totally worth the time and money. Aulia was fantastic. Totally fun, professional, knowledgable, and enjoyable to travel with. She guided me and cared for my safety and time considerations. A total gem of a guide. Don’t worry about the early start - you’ll have about 8 hours (4 hours each way) in an air conditioned mini van to sleep in on the road. Wear or bring head coverings and a robe or long jacket - to cover up to go into the Mosque so you don’t have to wait in line for a robe. Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. And bring an umbrella for rain or sun. It will be hot and humid outside. Bring money for gratuity for the guide and the driver. Bring toilet paper for the bathrooms. The driver will be driving for more than 12 hours - and Mr Yi was great too. The whole day will give you a taste of Malaysia - plus the yummy all you can eat buffet is a surprising treat. It was one of the most “exotic” and interesting days in my travel experiences - if in doubt, I would recommend just go for it! Want to see Malaysia in a day? This is the way to go!!! • Edd N 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful tour We arranged this tour directly on the website. Aulia was a wonderful guide who was very accommodating, considerate, and knowledgeable. The tour was a fantastic opportunity to see a lot of KL in a short amount of time. The flight is comparable to a Southwest Airlines flight in the US, and the regional airport is extremely lovely. Given how hot it was outside, the van's air conditioning made for a really comfortable ride. We had plenty of toilet breaks and water in the van. The only money we paid was on items we bought at the mall; everything else, including meals and admission fees, was free. The meals were excellent (we had a buffet lunch at the KL Tower and breakfast and dinner at airport restaurants with both western and more traditional options). Read more Written June 4, 2023

We were picked up at our hotel at 5 AM and driven to an airport just across the border in Malaysia. Getting through the customs checkpoint was easy. Once in the airport, Aulia got us breakfast and coffee at one of the airport restaurants. We then boarded the plane for a quick one hour flight to an airport just outside Kuala Lumpur. We were met there by another driver, who took us to the Batu Caves. We spent about 45 minutes there and then were off to our next stop, which was the royal palace. We made a few more stops along the way and then went to the KL tower where we had lunch at the revolving restaurant on top. The lunch was delicious. Our last stop was the Petronas twin towers where we went to the bridge and the observation deck on the 86th floor. we were then taken back to the airport and we flew back. During the entire tour, Aulia made sure we had everything we needed. We got some great pictures and videos along the way. Read more Written April 20, 2023

Travel Itinerary | Malaysia and Indonesia – 3 weeks

Travel itinerary | malaysia and indonesia – 3 weeks.

In August 2015 I picked up my backpack and embarked on a solo trip through Malaysia and Indonesia for 3 weeks. At the time, 3 weeks was all the vacation time I had. But even with only 3 weeks I managed to enjoy my time there to the fullest. I visited 2 new countries, discovered new sceneries, tasted new and delicious food and met amazing people along the way! Below you’ll find a 3 week travel itinerary through Malaysia and Indonesia, with a brief passage through Singapore. I hope it helps!

1| Singapore (1 night)

This travel itinerary starts in Singapore. I found a flight with a very interesting price from Lisbon, so I took the opportunity to stay for at least one night. I stayed on the riverside area of Boat Quay , at the 5footway.Inn   Hostel, but you can take a look at more accommodation options here:  Accommodation Singapore . Take the opportunity to visit the  Gardens by the Bay , where you can also watch the Super Trees Show at night, go all the way up to the top of the famous  Marina Bay Sands  Hotel, and if you can, take a dive in its fenomenal infinity pool.

2| Melacca (2 nights)

Melacca is located in Southern Malaysia and to these days, you can still see traces of the times when the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British occupied the area. The food is delicious and the neon tuk tuks are an attraction by itself. I got on a bus from Singapore to Melacca, after buying my ticket online through the website  Bus Online Ticket . The trip took about 3 hours.   The bus stops on the way, so that passengers can go through the necessary exit and entry procedures. I stayed at a very nice guesthouse with a fantastic price and an excellent location (5 minutes away from  the lively Jonker Street, where the  Night Market takes place on the weekends), called  Bala’s Place . For other accommodation options click here:  Accommodation Melacca.

3| Kuala Lumpur (2 nights)

The capital Kuala Lumpur, is a must go to destination on a travel itinerary through Malaysia. The famous Batu Caves, the Petrona Towers , the KL Tower and China Town are impossible to miss. I got on a bus in Melacca that took about 2 hours to get to Kuala Lumpur. You can buy the ticket online here:  Bus Online Ticket . I stayed at the  Paloma Inn Hotel , about a 5 minutes walk from China Town, but you can find more accommodation options here:  Accommodation Kuala Lumpur . For more detailed info about Kuala Lumpur, check out this post:

Kuala Lumpur, Malásia | Guia e Dicas de Viagem

4| Georgetown – Penang (2 nights)

Georgetown is a multicultural city, filled with art and culture. It’s located on the Penang Island in the North of Malaysia. The street art circuit is a great way to discover this city which resembles an open air museum. Don’t forget to visit the  Kek Lok Si , Dhammikarama  and  Wat Chaya Mangakalaram Temples  and try the famous Nasi Kandar culinary specialty! The bus trip form Kuala Lumpur to Penang takes about 4 hours and you can get your ticket online here:  Bus Online Ticket . I stayed at  Magpie Residence , in the mixed forms which, besides being dorms, offer a great deal of privacy and comfort. However, there are also private rooms, if you prefer. You can find more accommodation options in Georgetown here:   Accommodation in Georgetown .

5| Yogyakarta – Island of Java (2 nights)

I really enjoyed Yogyakarta. A city filled with tradition, culture and art, with a very relaxed atmosphere. I flew with AirAsia from Penang to Yogyakarta (with a stop over in Johor Bahru) and stayed in a private room at Rumah Zen   (which also has dorms). This is a very relaxed and at ease homestay (just like the city), where I got to meet really interesting people! You have other accommodation options here: Accommodation in Yogyakarta . And check out this post for more detailed info on Yogya:

Yogyakarta, Indonésia | Guia e Dicas de Viagem

6| Ubud – Island of Bali (4 nights)

I stayed the most amount of time in Ubud because I decided to rent a motorbike and visit the surrounding areas such as Lake Batur , Sidemen and several temples. I loved Ubud and I would go back as often as I could, and it is definitely a not to miss destination in any travel itinerary through Indonesia. The flight from Yogyakarta to Ubud took 1h15 and I ended up staying in 2 different places: at the central  Ode Hostel ,  and in this little homestay in a typical balinese house that I found in an alley, while roaming through the streets in Ubud, called  Anugrah Homestay (it’s not available online, however). You can find other accommodation options here:  Accommodation in Ubud . For more detailed info on Ubud , check out this post:

Ubud, Bali | Guia e Dicas de Viagem

7| Amed – Island of Bali (2 nights)

Amed was a last minute destination, it wasn’t in the plans, and that’s why I enjoyed it even more! This was where I did my first dive ever, next to a wracked North American ship from the II World War, and where I met amazing people. It’s a small village with a single main road and it’s important to rent a motorbike there. There’s not a lot to do in Amed apart from diving and snorkeling. I stayed at the  Teman Teman Bungalows , by the beach. They’re not available online (I booked when I got there), but you can find other accommodation options here:  Accommodation Amed . You have more info on Amed here:

Arrive in Singapore, Southeast Asia's financial powerhouse and famously its cleanest, greenest city.

Located just one degree north of the equator and surrounded by rainforest, modern-day Singapore is uniquely positioned to understand its own impact on the environment, and has been working hard to earn its reputation as the 'Garden City'. The concrete fronts of skyscrapers and buildings are being repurposed to accommodate green spaces wherever possible, creating their own colourful eco-systems in the sky. And although being one of the most densely populated countries on the planet, over 50% of Singapore is made up of parks and gardens, including of course the very unique Gardens by the Bay.

For those arriving on time our Leader plans to meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm for the welcome meeting. If you would like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), which is one hour from the hotel. Should you miss the welcome meeting, your Leader will inform you of any essential information over breakfast on day 2.

After the welcome meeting our Tour Leader plans to lead you on a night-walking tour to experience something synonymous with the Singapore experience- its mouth-watering street food. We hop on a public bus and make our way towards Chinatown, first stopping at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. Bathed in the twinkling glow of the city's evening lights, its a place where local Singaporeans come to wind down after a busy day, and is a great spot to witness some games of Chinese Chess being expertly played.

We then move on to Lau Pa Sat, the famous hawkers centre with its mind-boggling array of stalls. Offering anything from classics like steaming Singapore noodles and Malaysian Laksa to Shanghai pork buns or thunder tea rice, it is the place to get adventurous with food. Our Leader will talk us through a variety of dishes, and we end the night with a cooling desert such mango shaved ice or perhaps even a durian dessert.

Accommodation:

Ibis Bencoolen (or similar)

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Single room available

Meals provided: none.

This morning we head off on foot to discover more of this eclectic city. We start in the characterful commune of Little India, which grew from an Indian enclave in the 19th Century to the buzzing community we find today; brimming with restaurants, shops and art galleries all steeped in Tamil culture. We next move onto Kampong Glam, where the towering golden dome of the Sultan's Mosque watches over the narrow lanes of the Malay quarter, filled with boutique shops selling home-made wares and quirky street art galleries. We change environment again as we move into the Civic District, the birthplace of modern-day Singapore. It was from here where Sir Stamford Raffles vision of Singapore pored outwards, and befittingly it houses some excellent, well-preserved colonial-era buildings, such as the old Parliament House, Supreme Court building and the iconic Cricket Club.

Moving into the more modern areas of Singapore, we stop off at the home of the Merlion, a mythical creature that's half-lion, half-fish, depicted here as a statue spouting water into the Singapore River below. Merlion Park offers great views of the glittering Marina Bay as a backdrop to this famous statue. We end our walking tour today at the Boat Quay, the perfect water-side spot to enjoy a bite to eat or perhaps even a Singapore Sling at one of the many colourful alfresco bars or restaurants.

The remainder of the day has been left free to relax, or to further explore the city at your own pace. Those interested in shopping may wish to visit the trendy Orchard Street, art and nature lovers may wish to stroll around the Gardens by the Bay, and it is also possible to organise a river cruise to see the city from a different perspective.

Meals Provided: Breakfast

Leaving Singapore behind this morning, we cross at Woodlands checkpoint on to the Johor Causeway bridge into Malaysia. We drive north, reaching the Dutch-colonial settlement of Malacca in around four hours. Malacca is one of the oldest towns in Malaysia, and certainly the most cosmopolitan. In its time it has been ruled by the Portuguese, the Dutch, the British and the Japanese, finally becoming Malay in 1957.

This afternoon we make a visit to Villa Sentosa. This traditional house offering an interesting insight into the daily lives of a typical middle-class Malaysian family at the turn of the 20th century. This house-come-museum has been kept almost entirely as it was 100 years ago, and is located within the sleepy settlement of Kampong Morten, a village community hidden within the confines of the city.

This evening we include a river cruise, offering an interesting vantage point to watch the sun set over the colonial cityscape.

Rosa Malacca (or similar)

Old Malacca is a fascinating area to wander around and discover and this morning we include a walking tour of some of the major sights such as the tomb of Hang Kasturi, one of Malacca's five great 15th century warriors, and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia.

We then continue on to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, where we should arrive in the late afternoon. East and West rub shoulders in this eclectic and energetic city. KL (as it is known locally) has a hugely varied population, comprising mainly of Malays, Sikhs, Chinese, Indians, Tamils (many in local dress), and the odd splash of saffron from a robed Buddhist monk, adding colour to the vibrant street scenes.

Travelodge Bukit Bintang (or similar)

This morning we head out of the city and on to the iconic Batu Caves. Some 272 steps lead up to the sacred Hindu temple that lies inside the cave, and wonderful views of the city and beyond can be had from the entrance. The temple is a shrine to a Hindu deity, Lord Murugah and the complex consists of three caves full of colourful Hindu murals and artwork. After some time spent exploring, and perhaps witnessing a puja if we are lucky (a Hindu ceremony of worship where often an offering to the gods or deity will be made), we embark on a walking tour of Kuala Lumpur to uncover some of the cultural diversity of this lively and modern city. The tour starts at the colourfully decorated Guan Yin Temple, an ornate Buddhist temple dedicated to Guan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion. We then venture into Chinatown and onto Petaling Street, a pedestrianised lane lined with traditional Chinese lanterns and where anything from sunglasses to Bonsai trees can be bought. We move next onto the Hindu temple of Sri Maha Mariamman, a towering temple that is South Indian in style, and is said to be the oldest Hindu temple in all of Malaysia. On our way out of Chinatown we stop via the Central Market before crossing the Gombak River and onto the city's birthplace. This area offers a stark contrast from Chinatown and is full of historic buildings such as the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Tudor-styled Royal Selangor club, from Malaysia's colonial days.

The rest of the day is free at leisure. If you would prefer to explore, you may wish to visit 'KLCC' , the area in which the magnificent Petronas Towers lie. For wonderful views of the Towers along with a choice of Asian-inspired cocktails, head for the 'Sky Bar', residing on the 33rd floor of the Traders Hotel, directly opposite the towers.

We will catch a train to Ipoh first thing in the morning and we will then head north to Perak. Although a journey of 200 kilometres, the drive is comfortable and on a well-laid highway. We expect to make it to our homestay in Chenderoh Lake by the early afternoon.

The Suka Suka Lake Retreat is set on the banks of Chenderoh Lake and offers a great insight into daily life in rural Malaysia. It is set amongst tropical forests and working rubber plantations, and its accommodation comprises of a selection of traditional 'Kampung' style guesthouses with en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. Fans and mosquito nets are provided in all of the rooms.

After settling into our homestay we set off for an orientation walk around the local area. This area is home to many different plantations, and we will walk through active rubber and palm oil plantations to learn about how these crops are harvested, and why locals have chosen to make a living this way. We hope it offers a unique insight at a grassroots level into the realities of the oil palm trade, a multi-billion dollar industry for which Malaysia is the second-largest exporter in the world.

We will help to prepare dinner tonight alongside our hosts, which is likely to be a selection local fried fish, nasi goreng (tasty fried rice often served with egg and spices) and steamed vegetables. Sambal is another staple at dinner time - a kind of garnish paste made with chillies, herbs and spices. After dinner there is a chance to try your hand at Congkak - a popular Malaysian board game played with stones or beans.

Suka Suka Homestay (or similar)

Grade: Simple Homestay

Meals Provided: Breakfast & Dinner

This morning has been left free to relax in our natural surroundings. There is the option to take a kayak and have a gentle paddle around the calm waters of Chendorah Lake, or perhaps take another short walk.

Waving goodbye to our hosts we set off for the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia's hill-country. The highlands were discovered in the hey-days of the colonial era, with Victorian explorers sending home news of verdant slopes and mild climes which offered respite to Malaysia's punishing summer swelter. The British soon moved in, and up popped country estate houses, vast swathes of lush tea plantations and curious traditions of tea, scones and strawberries.

Present-day Cameron Highlands still retains some of this nostalgic charm, and tea plantations still make up large parts of the landscape.

Dinner tonight serves up a contrast to all of this British influence, as we will be cooking our own Malaysian hot pot. A hearty meal often eaten during winter months, this traditional way of cooking allows for meat and fish to be fried, and vegetables and other ingredients to be boiled all together in one pot under an open flame.

Strawberry Park Resorts (or similar)

Swimming pool available

Travelling by 4WD this morning, we will drive out to the nearby 'Mossy Forest' for a short walk through this eerie landscape. The forest lies at the highest elevation of this range, and as such is enveloped in near-permanent cloud cover, covering the forest in mist and constant moisture. This provides the perfect environment for moss, ferns and other evergreen plants to flourish.

After the Mossy Forest we will continue onto BOH tea factory. Nestled within many hectares of lush tea plantations, BOH have been growing tea for nearly 100 years. We will take a walk through the rows of plantations to see how tea is grown, picked and harvested, before visiting the factory to learn how it is refined to create the different varieties we find in our brews. We end with tea tasting in BOH's tea rooms, located high up with panoramic views of the plantations below.

After lunch, we leave the Cameron Highlands and drive to Penang, our base for the next two nights.

Ozo Georgetown (or similar)

Often called the 'Pearl of the Orient' by the local people, Penang lies some 4km off the Malay mainland. Its deep-water harbour is ideal for trade and so the island has become a haven of commerce. This morning we take an excursion around the island by private bus; visiting the majestic Kek Lok Si Temple, located on top of a hill, giving us a good insight into local life as it takes us through rural villages. You can also ride on the funicular railway to the top of Penang Hill (optional) for far reaching views across the island. In the afternoon you are free to explore. The Botanical Gardens are beautiful and can be reached quite easily by local bus, and there are many other interesting mosques and Buddhist temples to see. Appreciators of art should search out the local batik work at the Penang Art Gallery. In the evening we will organise to eat at one of the many local food stalls that Penang is so famous for, whether Indian, Chinese or Malay, the choice is yours!

We rise early this morning for our hour and half drive to Kuala Kedah and then take a ferry to the idyllic island paradise of Langkawi, a journey of approximately three hours. Langkawi is an archipelago made up of 99 islands lying just off the west coast of the Malaysian Peninsular. Surrounded by turquoise waters, the interior of the main island is a mixture of jungle-clad hills and picturesque paddy fields. This lush interior is encapsulated by white-sand beaches lapped by the warm waters of the Andaman Sea; an ideal place to relax or explore for our last few days in Malaysia. We will be met on arrival on the island and transferred to our base for the next 3 nights, where the rest of the day has been left free at leisure.

Holiday Villa Langkawi (or similar)

Today is a free day where you can choose to relax on the beautiful coconut palm-fringed beaches or perhaps snorkel amongst the tropical fish of the Andaman Sea. If you would prefer to remain more active, there are a number of optional excursions which can be arranged. Optional excursions include an island-hopping cruise where you can discover some of the lesser-visited islands of the archipelago, or a visit to the Northern Mangroves taking in the unique geology, flora and fauna of this area.

We have another free day to relax, unwind, or explore.

The trip ends after breakfast at our hotel in Langkawi.

There are no activities planned today, so you are free to depart from Langkawi at any time. If your flight is departing later in the day luggage storage facilities are available at our hotel. If you would like an airport transfer today, you need to depart from Langkawi International Airport (LGK), which is 30 minutes from the hotel.

Crossing Borders: Daytrip to Malaysia From Singapore - with Legoland Malaysia Picture

Are you planning a day trip to Malaysia from Singapore?

If so, you’ve come to the right place!

In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about crossing the Singapore-Malaysia border, and what awaits you once you’re there.

So, grab a cup of tea (or perhaps some Kopi-O, the local Singaporean coffee), and let’s dive in.

Brief Overview Of This Guide

South East Asia Map, Malaysia from Singapore

We’ll begin by addressing some essential points, such as understanding the distance and travel time between these two Southeast Asian destinations, along with the legal and visa considerations.

We’ll then examine the best ways to travel from Singapore to Malaysia, and vice versa, discussing the pros and cons of each method.

But what good is a day trip if you don’t know what to do or see once you arrive? We’ll provide an overview of must-see destinations in Malaysia perfect for a day trip. From Kuala Lumpur’s impressive skyline to Johor Bahru’s historical wonders, there’s something for every type of traveller.

We will also delve into Malaysia’s mouth-watering cuisine, unique culture, and must-have souvenirs.

Then, we’ll share some practical tips on currency exchange, cultural etiquette, and internet connectivity, along with health and vaccination requirements.

Finally, as your day draws to a close, we’ll guide you back across the border to Singapore, advising you on what to know about the return trip.

Background Information on Malaysia and Singapore

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Before we get into the nuts and bolts of the trip, let’s take a moment to appreciate the unique history and culture of these two nations.

Singapore, a high-tech city-state known for its iconic attractions , multicultural diversity, impeccable cleanliness, and stunning skyline, is a global financial hub. It’s also a renowned destination for foodies, thanks to its rich, multi-cultural food . From hawker centres serving Laksa and Hainanese Chicken Rice to Michelin-starred restaurants, Singapore offers a gastronomic journey like no other.

Just a causeway away, you’ll find Malaysia, a country teeming with vibrant culture, history, and stunning natural beauty. Its capital, Kuala Lumpur, is a bustling metropolis, boasting iconic landmarks like the Petronas Twin Towers. Outside the capital, you’ll find idyllic beaches, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, lush rainforests, and charming historic towns.

Travelling between these two neighbours, each with its distinct character and charm promises to be an adventure of a lifetime.

Planning Your Day Trip To Malaysia From Singapore

Passport

Before you pack your bags, it’s crucial to have a well-planned itinerary.

In this section, we’ll help you understand the logistics of your trip, the legalities involved, and the best time to visit Malaysia.

Understanding the Distance and Travel Time

Geographically, Singapore and Malaysia share a land and sea border, making the commute between these two nations relatively quick and easy.

However, the travel time greatly depends on your chosen mode of transportation and your intended destination in Malaysia.

For instance, if you plan to visit Johor Bahru, the nearest city in Malaysia to Singapore, it would take you around 30 minutes to an hour via car or bus, excluding immigration clearance time. On the other hand, if Kuala Lumpur is your destination, it will take approximately 5 – 6 hours by car or bus, and around 1 hour by plane.

Keep in mind that these times can fluctuate depending on traffic, weather conditions, and the time it takes to clear customs and immigration.

Legal and Visa Considerations

When it comes to crossing borders, one must not forget the legalities. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of entry into Malaysia.

Citizens of many countries, including Singapore, can enter Malaysia for tourism purposes without a visa for stays up to 30 or 90 days. However, immigration rules can change, so it’s always best to check the current visa requirements from official sources or consult with your travel agency.

Additionally, don’t forget to check the latest Covid-19 travel advisories and safety measures. Health protocols and requirements can vary over time, and it’s crucial to stay updated to ensure a smooth trip.

Malaysia Visa

Best Time to Visit Malaysia from Singapore

Being tropical countries, both Singapore and Malaysia are warm throughout the year, with temperatures typically ranging from 25°C to 35°C. The weather, therefore, may not be a significant factor in deciding when to make your trip. However, being aware of the monsoon seasons might help you avoid heavy rains and potential disruptions to your plans.

Typically, the best time to visit West Malaysia (where Kuala Lumpur and Malacca are located) is between December and February when the weather is drier and cooler. For Johor Bahru, anytime outside the monsoon months (November to February) would be ideal.

However, one of the charms of Malaysia is its year-round festive atmosphere. Various cultural festivals such as Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, and Christmas are celebrated grandly. Aligning your visit with these festivities could add an extra layer of cultural immersion to your trip.

Remember, a well-planned trip is often a successful one. So take your time, consider your options, and gear up for the adventure that awaits.

  • Booking Tickets : You can book tickets online in advance, especially during peak travel periods or public holidays.
  • Departure Point : Buses depart from various points in Singapore, including Bugis, Orchard, Little India, and more. Choose the most convenient pick-up location for you.
  • Immigration Clearance : Buses will stop at both Singapore and Malaysia immigration checkpoints. Remember to take all your belongings with you as you may not re-board the same bus after immigration.
  • Travel Light : If possible, travel light. Not only will this make immigration clearance smoother, but it’ll also be more convenient for you as you navigate through the day.
  • Pack Snacks : Pack some snacks and drinks for the journey, especially if you’re travelling to further destinations like Kuala Lumpur.

Remember, the journey is part of the adventure! So sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery as you make your way from the vibrant cityscape of Singapore to the diverse landscapes of Malaysia.

  • Advance Booking : Similar to bus travel, it’s advisable to book your tickets in advance, particularly during the holiday season.

Malaysian Food and Culture

A trip to Malaysia is incomplete without diving into its rich food scene and understanding its vibrant culture. Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect.

Famous Malaysian Dishes to Try

Nasi Lemak

Malaysian cuisine is a delightful mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, creating a unique and flavorful blend. Here are some dishes you shouldn’t miss:

  • Nasi Lemak : Considered the national dish of Malaysia, Nasi Lemak is fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, served with sambal (spicy sauce), anchovies, peanuts, and boiled egg.
  • Satay : These are skewers of marinated meat (usually chicken or beef) that are grilled to perfection and served with a peanut sauce.
  • Char Kuey Teow : A popular noodle dish stir-fried in a dark soy sauce with prawns, beansprouts, chives, and sometimes Chinese sausage and fish cake.
  • Laksa : This spicy noodle soup comes in various types, but the two most popular are Penang Assam Laksa (fish-based sour soup) and Curry Laksa, which has a coconut curry soup base.
  • Roti Canai : A type of Indian-influenced flatbread that’s crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and perfect for dipping in curry sauces.

Understanding the Malaysian Culture

Malaysia is a multicultural and multiconfessional country, with Malays, Chinese, and Indians making up the majority of the population. This diversity is reflected in its culture, which is a blend of various traditions and influences.

Malaysia is also known for its art forms, including traditional dance and music like the graceful Mak Yong theatre, the martial art form Silat, and the mesmerizing gamelan music. Malaysian hospitality is renowned worldwide, and visitors often find themselves welcomed with open arms.

Shopping and Souvenirs

Batik Textiles

From bustling markets to high-end malls, shopping in Malaysia caters to all tastes and budgets. Here are a few souvenirs to look out for:

  • Batik : This traditional fabric, with beautiful patterns created using a wax-resist dyeing technique, can be made into clothing, tablecloths, or wall hangings.
  • Pewter Goods : Malaysia is one of the biggest producers of pewter, and items like mugs, plates, and jewelry make excellent souvenirs.
  • Local Spices and Snacks : Think of curry powders, local coffee, or sweet and savory snacks like dodol and murukku.
  • Handicrafts : Items like woven baskets, wooden carvings, and beadwork reflect the skills of local artisans.

Exploring the food and culture is a crucial part of any trip to Malaysia. So, whether you’re savouring a bowl of Laksa, bargaining at a local market, or getting lost in the rhythm of a traditional dance, remember to soak in every moment of your Malaysian adventure.

Practical Information and Travel Tips

Malaysian Ringgit

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable day trip to Malaysia, here are some practical tips and information.

Currency Exchange

The official currency of Malaysia is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). Currency exchange services are readily available at banks, airports or borders, and dedicated exchange bureaus in Singapore and Malaysia. It’s often a good idea to carry some cash as not all places, especially smaller shops and street vendors, accept credit cards.

Cultural Etiquettes and Safety Tips

Respect for local culture is vital wherever you travel. In Malaysia, dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Use your right hand for giving and receiving items, as the left is traditionally seen as impure. It’s also recommended to avoid public displays of affection.

Malaysia is generally safe for travellers, but as with any destination, it’s important to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places.

Mobile and Internet Connectivity

Prepaid SIM cards are widely available in Malaysia and can be bought at the airport, convenience stores, and official telecom company stores. Malaysia has a strong network infrastructure, so internet coverage is generally good, particularly in cities.

Health and Vaccination Requirements

As of my last update in May 2023, there are no mandatory vaccination requirements for travellers entering Malaysia from Singapore. However, it’s always a good idea to be up-to-date on routine vaccines, including measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and your yearly flu shot.

Ensure to check the latest travel advisories from reliable sources such as the World Health Organization (WHO) or your country’s foreign travel department.

Travel Insurance

Consider getting travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and lost belongings. Check whether the policy covers more than one country.

Returning to Singapore

Shopping Bags

After a fantastic day exploring Malaysia’s sights and delights, it’s time to head back to Singapore. Here’s some essential information to keep in mind for your return journey:

Travelling Back to Singapore: What to Know

The return journey from Malaysia to Singapore is usually straightforward. You can travel back the same way you came – by bus, train, car, ferry, or tour.

Do keep in mind the travel times and make sure to check the last departure times if you are using public transport. Also, remember that immigration can take a while, especially during peak times, so factor that into your travel schedule.

Just as when you left Singapore, you’ll need to go through immigration controls when you return. Ensure you have all your travel documents, including your passport and any necessary visas, ready for inspection.

Customs Regulations and Duty-free Shopping

Singapore has strict customs regulations. Make sure you are aware of the duty-free concession limits and the list of prohibited and controlled goods.

Duty-free shopping can be a great way to make some savings. You’ll find duty-free shops at the airports and some border crossings. Just remember to keep any receipts, as you may need to show them at customs.

Lastly, always declare goods that exceed your duty-free concession or goods that are controlled or subject to GST. Failure to do so could result in penalties.

Returning to Singapore after your day trip to Malaysia, you’ll likely be tired but filled with unforgettable memories. Remember, the most important part of any trip is to enjoy the journey and have fun!

Recap On Day Trip To Malaysia From Singapore

Desaru, Malaysia

Taking a day trip from Singapore to Malaysia can be an exciting and rewarding experience and it’s more than possible to do in one day.

You’ll have the chance to explore vibrant cities like Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, or Malacca, visit iconic landmarks such as the Petronas Towers or the Batu Caves, and immerse yourself in the Malaysian culture.

Remember to plan your trip keeping in mind the distance, travel time, and legal considerations. Choose the mode of transport that suits your convenience and preferences, whether it’s by bus, train, car, ferry, or a guided tour. The key to a memorable day trip lies in effective planning and flexibility.

Final Thoughts and Suggestions

While a day trip gives you a brief glimpse into the fascinating world of Malaysia, it’s worth noting that there’s so much more to explore in this diverse country.

Pope Francis to visit Singapore from Sept 11 to 13; will also stop over in Indonesia on Sept 3

Fans, showers, icy treats: how singapore zoo is helping animals beat the heat, tourism malaysia promotes breakfast culture at malaysia travel escapades in singapore; nasi lemak and roti canai the main limelight.

The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis will visit Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and Singapore in September, confirming the longest trip of Francis’ papacy that is sure to test his health, stamina and mobility.

The Vatican confirmed the Sept 2-13 visit, saying the 87-year-old pope would visit Jakarta, Indonesia; Port Moresby and Vanimo, Papua New Guinea; Dili, East Timor; and Singapore. Further details will be announced later.

Francis’ health has become a source of increasing concern and speculation, even though the pontiff is able to carry on with a rigorous schedule of meetings at the Vatican and even excursions to local parishes.

Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, had to cancel a planned visit to Dubai late last year after he came down with a bad case of bronchitis. He suffered from respiratory problems all winter and had to curtail his participation in Holy Week events to save his energy for Easter.

Francis has also been using a wheelchair for nearly two years because of bad knee ligaments, and said that travelling has become increasingly more difficult. And yet, at 11 days, the trip would be the longest of Francis’ papacy, outpacing by a few days some of his long trips to the Americas early on in his 11-year papacy. It will bring the Argentine Jesuit to the world’s most populous Muslim nation, Indonesia, as well as the former Portuguese colony of East Timor, where the Catholic church wields enormous influence.

There is also a chance of another leg to the trip being added later: This week, the Vatican foreign minister, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, was in Vietnam and discussed a papal visit, Vatican News reported, without providing details.

In a statement announcing the visit, the Indonesian foreign ministry welcomed the visit and recalled that it had originally been scheduled for 2020 but was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The visit of Pope Francis to Indonesia holds significant importance to the Indonesian people, not only for Catholics but all religious communities. The visit is expected to strengthen the message of tolerance, unity and world peace,” the statement said.

Indonesia is home to roughly 242 million Muslims and 29 million Christians – 8.5 million of whom are Catholics – according to a 2022 report by the Religious Affairs Ministry.

East Timor, which today has a population of about 1.2 million people, is South-East Asia’s only predominantly Christian nation with the exception of the Philippines. According to the 2015 census, 97.6% of East Timor’s population is Catholic.

The visit to East Timor will likely reignite attention over a clergy sex abuse scandal involving its revered independence hero and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

The Vatican confirmed in 2022 that it had sanctioned Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo following allegations that he sexually abused boys during the 1990s. Belo is believed to now be living in Portugal.

Francis will be the first pope to visit Papua New Guinea since St. John Paul II went there in 1984. The country, in a strategically important part of the South Pacific, has struggled with tribal violence and civil unrest. — AP

I've traveled to 9 out of 10 countries in Southeast Asia. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I made along the way.

  • I've traveled solo to nine countries in Southeast Asia.
  • I've made many mistakes, from traveling during monsoon season to forgetting to bring enough cash.
  • Travelers should make sure they plan ahead and research each country's culture.

Insider Today

Over the last two years, my journey as a travel enthusiast and Business Insider's travel reporter in Singapore has brought me to almost every country in Southeast Asia.

In total, there are 10 countries in Southeast Asia , and I've traveled to nine of them — Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei. Myanmar remains the only country in the region I have not visited, and while I am keen to explore it, I have held off on visiting because of the country's ongoing civil war.

I've watched the sun rise in Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cared for elephants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I've explored the Bornean jungle in Brunei and crawled the Cu Chi Tunnels in southern Vietnam.

But it hasn't always been easy. I've made several mistakes traveling across the region , especially as a solo traveler. Here are five mistakes I made and how to avoid them.

1. Going during monsoon season and not planning for the weather.

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

In July, I traveled to Thailand on a reporting trip to cover the budding cannabis industry . There, I was met with heavy rain nearly every day. In Bangkok, I was staying in a hostel in Chakkrawat , a district with narrow, meandering streets, which made it difficult to walk anywhere in the pouring rain.

I didn't plan for the weather, so I didn't have an umbrella or poncho with me and had to rush to get one at the last minute. I also had a packed itinerary with a lot of travel between meetings, which was a hassle in the constant downpour.

Before traveling to Southeast Asia, make sure to avoid two seasons — the monsoon season, which often comes with strong typhoons in countries like the Philippines, and the burning season, where farmers burn land for fertile soil. This is a common occurrence in countries like Laos, Thailand, and the island of Borneo, which is shared between Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

When I traveled to Laos in April last year during the burning season , most of my plans — including a hot air balloon ride — were canceled because of the thick smog. I also didn't have an N95 mask with me, and I ended up with a sore throat.

If you do plan to come during these seasons, make sure to pack accordingly and plan a flexible schedule.

2. Traveling during Ramadan and expecting the same practices everywhere.

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

Having grown up in Singapore, I'm familiar with the practices during Ramadan , the holy month for Muslims, where they fast for most of the day. I studied Malay for seven years, and in school, I often fasted with my Muslim classmates and ate only in private.

Still, in many cities in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia , non-Muslims are free to dine in public, so long as they do so respectfully. But on my trip to Brunei in April — at the height of the burning season and in the middle of Ramadan — there were more practices I needed to observe.

Most restaurants were closed, and diners weren't allowed to eat there even if they were open — only take-out was allowed. Eating in public was a major faux pas even for non-Muslims, and if you want to drink some water, you can only do so when nobody is around.

It wasn't easy, especially as Brunei was sweltering at 100 degrees Fahrenheit on some days. I made do by returning to the hotel for lunch and grabbing a big dinner with the locals at the night market after they had broken their fast.

3. Not packing enough modest outfits when visiting temples and mosques.

Southeast Asia is pretty liberal, and you can wear whatever you want in many places. In popular destinations like Phuket, Thailand, and Bali, Indonesia, lots of tourists walk around in bikini tops and shorts, and locals mostly tolerate it.

But there are certain places you do need to cover up, like places of worship, which include temples and mosques. When I visited Angkor Wat — the famed temple complex in Cambodia — in February last year, I found some tourists being told off by the local tour guides for wearing shorts and tank tops — "Tomb Raider" style.

I've learned to err on the right side of caution and bring a sarong wherever I go. It's an easy way to cover up and make an outfit more modest when you need to.

4. Forgetting to pack medication, especially when I plan to eat street food.

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

Southeast Asia has some of the world's most flavorful food. In every country, you can find food that is cheap and delicious, and that includes Singapore , the world's most expensive city. In countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, street food dishes can cost as little as a dollar.

I eat mostly street food when I travel in Southeast Asia, so medicine for tummy-related illnesses is a must. I've only gotten sick twice from eating street food — and it was the same dish both times— and unfortunately, those were the few times I didn't have medicine with me.

I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I've eaten everything from pufferfish stew to frog porridge and dishes made with intestines off the street. I've learned to wash the utensils provided before digging in and make sure the food is cooked to order and heated up before being served.

5. Relying on my card and not bringing enough cash with me.

malaysia singapore indonesia trip

In Singapore, I don't really use cash and often use Apple Pay, mobile payments, and cards. But I've found that many stores in other countries in Southeast Asia only accept cash.

For example, on my third trip to Vietnam, I spent an hour trying to make payment via bank transfer after the staff at a luxury perfume shop — which was selling items priced upwards of $200 — informed me at the last minute that they didn't accept card or contactless payment.

I've also found the majority of street vendors in the region only accept mobile payment — which is limited to local banks — or cash. I've learned to change a considerable amount of money before leaving the airport and keep whatever I didn't use for my next trip.

Follow our news, recent searches, two visits, different perspectives: prabowo’s landmark trips abroad as indonesia president-elect raise eyebrows, advertisement.

How will Indonesia’s next leader navigate diplomacy with major powers? What about relations with Southeast Asian nations? Mr Prabowo’s rare pre-inauguration trips to China and Japan may yet yield some clues.

SINGAPORE: No Indonesian president-elect is known to have formally visited any foreign country before assuming office at Merdeka Palace. That is, till now.

Mr Prabowo Subianto's visits to China and Japan before his likely October inauguration have garnered extensive coverage. Chinese media in particular have hyped up Mr Prabowo’s Beijing check-in, focusing on the fact that Indonesia’s next leader decided to visit China first.

While analysts are cautioning against reading too much into the visits, some say the developments - especially the choice of destination - provide further hints into the likely direction and conduct of Indonesia’s foreign policy under Mr Prabowo’s charge.

At the same time, they believe that even as Indonesia navigates diplomacy with major powers, engagement with Southeast Asian states will also remain firmly on the radar under a Prabowo presidency, mirroring the stances taken by past Indonesian leaders.

“I expect the first official visit after Mr Prabowo takes office would be to neighbouring ASEAN countries,” said Mr Radityo Dharmaputra, a lecturer at the Department of International Relations in Surabaya’s Airlangga University.

BREAKING WITH TRADITION

China’s foreign ministry announced last week that Mr Prabowo would be visiting China from Mar 31 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, less than two months after winning the race to lead Southeast Asia’s biggest economy.

The three-day visit saw Mr Prabowo meeting with Mr Xi in Beijing, where they reaffirmed bilateral ties and pledged support for closer relations. Mr Prabowo also met Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

Midway through Mr Prabowo’s China stop, Japan announced that the former general would be swinging by thereafter for two days from Apr 2. While there, Mr Prabowo met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

“Under the comprehensive strategic partnership, as excellent partners, we would like to advance our bilateral relationship and cooperation in regional and international affairs,” said Mr Kishida after their Wednesday meeting as reported by Nikkei Asia.

The visits have generated plenty of media buzz, with outlets highlighting how it is Mr Prabowo’s first foreign tour since being elected president. Some also pointed out the novelty of an Indonesian president-elect making formal overseas visits.

No Indonesian president-elect has ever done so. Cases in point - outgoing president Joko Widodo; likewise for his predecessor Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who won Indonesia’s first direct presidential election in 2004.

Still, analysts CNA spoke to have cautioned about reading too much into the developments.

Ms Christine Susanna Tjhin, co-founder and director of Gentala Institute, explained that in Indonesia, there is no legal instrument that regulates the authority and overseas visits of the president-elect.

She believes the meeting with Mr Xi was a diplomatic courtesy from top Chinese leadership to Mr Prabowo, who was already scheduled to visit Beijing.

“The visit to China has actually been on the agenda of (Indonesia’s) Ministry of Defence since the end of 2023 or early 2024,” she added.

“The appointment of key ministerial positions and the actual official state visits after his inauguration will be more indicative of Mr Prabowo’s foreign policy direction.”

Expressing similar sentiments, Mr Radityo said the China visit might have been planned even before the presidential victory.

“Considering Indonesia is an important player in the region, I would say this is a good strategy from China to show that Mr Prabowo and Indonesia are important partners.”

TWO VISITS, DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES

The trip to China by Mr Prabowo, who is also Indonesia’s current defence minister, was framed differently by China and Indonesia.

China’s foreign ministry referred to the 72-year-old as “president-elect of Indonesia and Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) general chairman” when announcing his visit. A spokesperson also underscored that China would be the first country visited by Mr Prabowo after being elected president.

President Xi himself brought up this point during their meeting. “You have chosen China as the destination of your first post-election visit, and made a special trip to China during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan,” he told Mr Prabowo.

In comparison, Indonesia’s defence ministry referred to Mr Prabowo as “Minister of Defence” in a press release describing his meeting with President Xi. The spokesperson of Mr Prabowo’s presidential campaign also said he was visiting China as defence minister to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly on defence affairs.

Analysts say the focus by China on Mr Prabowo being Indonesia’s next leader is deliberate, especially as it vies with the United States for regional influence.

“It is China’s way of posturing, to show that they move faster than the US in dealing with (Indonesia’s) next president,” said international law professor Hikmahanto Juwana at the University of Indonesia.

“China’s move is to ensure the friendly diplomatic relationship and economic partnership under the current administration would be continued under the new administration. Hence, we saw a slightly ‘special treatment’ by Mr Xi towards Mr Prabowo in this visit,” Prof Juwana added.

Two-way trade between China and Indonesia was about US$150 billion in 2022, triple the tally back in 2013. Chinese investment in Indonesia came in at US$8.2 billion in 2022 as well, placing China as the country’s second-largest investor after Singapore.

IN FOCUS: What the remote Natuna islands reveal about Indonesia's stance on China

China open to deepen partnership with Indonesia, says Xi : State media

Infrastructure projects have been a key focus of Chinese investments - for example, the China-backed Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway which began commercial operations in October last year.

Chinese investments have also flowed heavily into nickel smelters. While bolstering the local industry and creating jobs, it has also provided Chinese firms reliable access to the metal, which is a key component in electric vehicle batteries. China is the world’s largest electric vehicle market.

China has long signalled how specifically significant Indonesia is, most prominently from President Xi’s speech at the Indonesian Parliament announcing the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road in 2013, Ms Tjhin from Gentala Institute explained.

Still, she cautioned that Indonesia needs to be realistic. While China is Indonesia’s largest trading partner and second-largest for foreign direct investments, Indonesia is only ranked 16 on the list of China’s export destinations (about 2 per cent of total trade) and ranked 12 as an import partner (about 3 per cent of total trade) based on 2022 global trade data.

Against this backdrop, Ms Tjhin asserted that despite the positive prose by Beijing, Indonesia must be aware of the current reality and keep on improving the domestic situation while leveraging its strategic advantages in the region.

Economic considerations aside, Mr Radityo from Airlangga University believes China wants to build relations as soon as possible with Mr Prabowo. “This is not only about China’s interests in terms of economic policies and investments but also as a possible geopolitical ally in some issues regarding the world order.”

As for Mr Prabowo’s trip to Japan, coverage was relatively subdued compared to his China visit. Indonesian media had limited reports while Japanese news outlets covered it straight, citing the Apr 1 announcement by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi.

Indonesia "is a comprehensive strategic partner (of Japan) that shares fundamental principles and values, and has historical ties (with Japan) in a wide range of fields such as politics, economy and culture," Mr Hayashi said as reported by Jiji Press.

ALIGNED ON BEING NON-ALIGNED?

Even as observers stress that it’s early days, they say Mr Prabowo’s trips to China and Japan suggest that he will likely maintain Indonesia’s long-standing non-aligned foreign policy.

Indonesia’s “independent and active” foreign policy is one that does not align with the superpowers nor does it bind the country to any military pact, stated Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi in November last year in an annual foreign policy publication by the Körber Foundation.

“It places great emphasis on an active role and engagement with all countries, guided by strategic autonomy and firm adherence to international law,” she added.

Mr Radityo pointed out that Mr Prabowo’s visit to Japan immediately after China is a “clever way” for him to show that Indonesia will remain in the middle as before, as Japan is considered a traditional ally of the US.

Ms Tjhin - a former China Study Group convenor at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, Indonesia - told CNA the geographical proximity of both China and Japan’s visit is consistent with Mr Prabowo’s non-aligned messages.

Similarly, Dr Johanes Herlijanto, co-founder and chairman of Indonesian Sinology Forum, said China and Japan represent two different geopolitical camps. “His new administration will not want to be seen as leaning towards China. Mr Prabowo wants to continue the current policy," he added.

And even as Indonesia balances its relations with major powers, analysts believe engagement with Southeast Asian countries will remain front and centre for Jakarta.

Past Indonesian leaders have made no bones of the importance placed on relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states. It has been a tradition since Mr Suharto’s presidency to visit neighbouring ASEAN countries for their first bilateral meeting.

Former president Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur, who was known for his frequent international trips almost every month, visited several ASEAN nations first before departing further afield to countries like the US and Japan.

His successor Ms Megawati Soekarnoputri - Indonesia’s first female president - launched a whirlwind regional tour a month after replacing Mr Wahid, visiting all ASEAN countries across eight days.

While not on the same scale, her successor Mr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and current president Joko Widodo also made it a point to visit ASEAN countries for their first bilateral outing - in their cases, it was Malaysia.

Analysts CNA spoke to firmly believe this trend of having a Southeast Asian nation as the first bilateral port of call will be maintained by Mr Prabowo, and that ASEAN centrality will continue as the cornerstone of Indonesia’s foreign policy.

“Mr Prabowo has mentioned how ASEAN is key to regional security and stability - not just in terms of military capacity, but also for its regional economic sector,” said Ms Tjhin.
