Mallu Traveler - 2.26M subscribers

One man, his bike and a trip around the world - Shakir Suban, from Kannur in Kerala, built upon this dream and has currently traveled over 29 countries by either hitchhiking or riding on his bike. Watch this adventure traveler explore the world on two wheels on one of the most popular YouTube channels from Kerala. Shakir started his world trips with a completely cashless journey from Kerala to Kathmandu where he hitchhiked for over 6,000 kilometers. In an interview, Shakir reminisces of this decision: “I have always wanted to travel a lot but never had the financial resources. I have this dream of embarking on a solo world tour on bike and approached many firms for sponsorship but they all just laughed at me. So I found a simple solution, just travel cashless,” he said.

Tech Travel Eat by Sujith Bhakthan -1.55M subscribers

Sujith Bhakthan is a name synonymous with travel vlogging in Kerala. With over a decade of experience in the field, he has garnered a sizable fan following on multiple social media platforms. In his own words, “All famous travel videos in Malayalam are just about places and their characteristics. However, my channel focuses solely on giving information about how to go to different places.”

India’s first Van Life Vloggers, two brothers named Libin and Ebin, started their passion for travel with nothing in hand other than an Omni van. They had to beg to survive on certain days and the only option they had for their stay was their van. Unbeknownst to them, they were following a popular lifestyle. After learning more about the Van Life culture that's quite popular in Western countries, they decided to give it a try. Now they are one of the most popular Malayalam YouTubers with top of the class caravans, travelling all over the world.

Harees Ameerali - Royal Sky Holidays - 725K subscribers

Another person with humble beginnings, Harees started his career as a construction worker in the Gulf. He now owns Royal Sky Holidays, a travel agency in Kerala. The start of his YouTube channel was also to promote his travel agency. With the help of popular travel vlogger Sujith Bhakthan and tech vlogger Ratheesh R Menon, Hareesh Ameerali started his YouTube channel in 2018 and soon the channel saw exponential growth. It is now one of the top travel vlogs from Malayalam.

Food and Travel by Ebbin Jose -538K subscribers

Ebin Jose follows the philosophy that the best way to understand a city is to eat there. This food and travel vlogger from Kottayam has focused mainly on showcasing the traditional delicacies of Kerala. Travelling throughout the state, he visits local toddy shops, tribal villages and rural areas that are not commonly covered. He also did many food vlogs in collaboration with popular YouTuber Mark Wiens, who contacted Ebbin Jose after seeing his youtube channel and wanted to visit Kerala.

Yathra Today - 401K subscribers

Started by an automobile and travel loving youth, Dilshad, Yathra Today initially covered lesser known places in Kerala. Then they started to travel throughout India on their bikes. Yatra Today consists of a bunch of young automobile enthusiasts who were also vlogging coldstarts of abandoned vehicles. Dilshad then set off on a South Asian trip that he has covered in his YouTube channel. His friendly and down to earth character has garnered a dedicated fan following for the channel.

Sherin Paul, a Kochiite, started vlogging to share his travel experiences, especially in the city of Kochi. Sherin travels to less known places in Kochi on his bicycle in his popular vlog series titled Kochiyil Thera Para - Bicycle Travel Video Series. He points out places of interest, from landmarks and hangout spots to celebrity houses. This has made him more popular among Kochiites. Tales from a Traveler: The Mallu Travel King

“My world was limited and so were my views It ended as it began, and the lies I did chew, The day I stepped out, I found what I sought, The truth, the tales, beyond what I thought.”

Travelling opens up perspectives of the world that we never thought about. We start seeing events from a lens that was so unreachable a while ago and we feel elated at the dawn of this realization that the world is much bigger and we a small part of this extravagant planet. Here is a traveler sharing his stories to the eyes of the seeker.

In conversation with Arshad Azad, commonly known to the Instagram family as the Mallu Travel King. Here he shares his insights from his journeys and how a few months catapulted him to the limelight as a food vlogger.

When did you realize that you had a flair for travel and food vlogging?

It’s a universal law that every traveler will become a storyteller at some point of time in their lives. I have been traveling for the last 16 years. At some point in time, I decide to log my travel diaries on social media. That’s how I started posting videos on TikTok. Nearly about the same time, due to Corona, I was quarantined for almost 4 months in an extraordinary situation. That’s the time when I started to explore social media, and often venturing out to find new food and eventually to food vlogging, broadcasting my experiences to a wider audience.

As a traveler, the prowess of the local language may find to be pretty handy in knowing the local culture. What is your approach to this? Do you take the efforts to learn more languages for making your travels get more of an insider feeling?

Language is a barrier, but with all the advanced technologies – it’s minimal. Rather than listing out a place and traveling, I make videos of wherever I go, of whatever I see, of whatever I eat.  I haven’t learned any new language in the last 10 years. I speak Malayalam, English, Tamil, and Hindi. In other places, we use a translator … The good part is, we always have local support whenever we go out to explore. And I prefer to be like that whenever it is.

If I get a chance I would love to learn Spanish, Arabic, and Portuguese.

Many of your posts feature bakeries and other retail chains. How do you explore these places?

That’s an interesting question, food was always a problem during my initial days of traveling. For me homely food is everything. Almost until the age of 23 have been an eggetarian. During the travels, I slowly started trying out meat, fish, etc. It took me some time, but I was able to change. Where ever we go, food is good, that’s why the native people eat that particular food. We as foreigners take time to adapt to that food, and otherwise, all food is good. I think it’s people who get adapted to the locally available resources like food.

Is there a particular event in your life as a vlogger that catapulted your growth?

A video with the famous Chef Burak Özdemir gave me a good reach, and also a couple of videos at Salt Bae’s restaurant. I believe that I have just started, and I have a long way to go. I strongly hold on to the fact that I definitely can do better.

Your videos have an overwhelming response to social media. How do you interact with your fans?

I am blessed with a lot of good friends in real life and on social media. On social media, I reply to all the direct messages that come to me through Instagram and Facebook, But very little do I interact through the mobile number and WhatsApp. I believe whomever really wants to get in touch, will definitely get in touch, something or the other will lead them to you. People with less priority will move away.  

Travelling often opens up windows to the world from a different perspective. Is there a particular story or an event that happened in one of the travels that has influenced you strongly?

For me, I have plenty of stories, good memories of traveling. I remember a couple of my early journeys. The first time, with my college friends I went for a trip with the National Adventure Foundation. I met Wing Commander SKJ Nair. We flew Microlite with him. That trip inspired me and later I joined the Indian Air Force.

You have served in the Indian Air Force. How has the rigid training at the academy helped shape your personality?

Yes, that helped me more than anything. I completed the training from the Indian Air Force, but due to medical reasons, I had to leave the force. Personally and emotionally that was a huge loss for me, but imagine a young man of 22,  after completing training from Indian Air Force and looking for a job. I’m sure Air Force training has enhanced my skills and molded my attitude.

As evident from your posts, You venture out to explore adventurous things while you travel. Is there an experience that you would cherish for long from any of these adventures?

Adventure activities keep our minds engaged, they make you feel young. For me, at this age, I prefer to do something which will not affect the health and peace of my mind. But I love those experiences, risk, and daringness, and I yearn for that rush of adrenaline that comes along with trying out these.

Could you give us a glimpse of your other ventures? What are your plans for travel and food blogging?

I work in the oil and gas service industry. My designation is Operations Manager- Asia. I have worked in more than hundreds of refineries as a technical specialist. In fact, being a specialist in my job is what made me travel extensively. Traveling almost every day was difficult, but God had plans.  I also have plans to set up projects to improve the quality of domestic water in Kerala.

Dubai: Just two years ago, he had worked as a salesman at a supermarket in Dubai’s Muhaisnah area for a salary of Dh2,000 and lived in one of the workers’ accommodation blocks in the same area. His life took a quantum leap ever since he became a travel vlogger after returning home by the end of 2018.

Today, Shakir Subhan from the south Indian state of Kerala is a YouTube star under the name ‘Mallu Traveler’ with more than one million subscribers, which he is going to celebrate at the same place in Dubai where he had once lived a modest life.

Obviously, his subscribers are eagerly looking forward to the unboxing of the Gold Play Button, YouTube’s creator award for one million subscriptions. The 30-year-old Malayali, who became famous with his budget travel vlogs — including hitchhiking to Nepal and Singapore, from Kerala, and globetrotting on a bike — is currently in the UAE to show the world how the country has welcomed tourists even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As a traveller, my aim is to introduce various places, people, their customs and cultures to my subscribers and inspire them to travel to the countries I visit. I felt there was no better place than the UAE, particularly Dubai, for travellers to explore during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Shakir told Gulf News in a phone interview.

Why 2020 is such a good year

It is not his first visit as a travel vlogger to the UAE though. Shakir had already covered the country on a bike as part of his ‘Kerala to Europe Solo Bike Ride’ expedition on a TVS Apache motorcycle in January this year.

Though his channel had received hundreds of thousands of views for his videos taken in the UAE during the bike ride, his most popular videos came through when he had to return home from Azerbaijan via Dubai after the coronavirus outbreak.

The video of his return journey during the early days of coronavirus in the UAE and his subsequent admission in a quarantine centre in Kerala received more than one million views. His vlogs from the COVID-19 isolation ward gained him millions of views and subscribers and wide publicity in Indian media.

“Probably I am one of the few people who would say 2020 has been a good year and coronavirus has given me only positive things not the infection,” he said, with a laughter.

When he received an invitation to fly to Dubai when it started receiving tourists once again, Shakir decided to make it a special visual treat for his subscribers. Since his trips to the tourist destinations in the emirates are supported by the local authorities, Shakir said he wanted to make his videos as professional as possible. “It’s my first trip after the lockdown. I have different types of cameras, which I use to shoot my travel videos. This time, I decided to bring a crew of two people, my friends Jaseel and Shabeer, who can help me with the videos when I use the high-end cameras that I specifically bought for this trip. I am very happy that we have been able to share some spectacular 4K visuals from many tourist attractions in Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah so far.”

Tourism in UAE post lockdown

Shakir’s journey began with a video explaining the procedures for travelling to Dubai after the movement restrictions were lifted. His vlogs about a luxury yacht ride in Dubai Marina and an exciting skydiving experience have shown how Dubai’s tourism sector has bounced back after the emirate reopened its businesses. Mallu Traveler’s COVID-19 travel vlog has been showing the best experiences that tourists can have in the UAE now — including a captivating visit to the Mleiha Archeological Centre in Sharjah and an adventurous zip lining experience in Ras Al Khaimah, where he was given a reception by local officials. A scenic seaplane tour of Dubai on Saturday will be the next video on his channel, which releases videos every day.

While his fans in the UAE have been meeting and greeting him at various locations here, one of them — Iqbal Hatboor — even took him for a ride in his Rolls-Royce car and treated him to a luxury dinner at Burj Khalifa to mark Shakir’s 30th birthday.

“It’s been a great experience so far. I want to show to my subscribers that we don’t have to be scared to travel during the pandemic if we take enough precautions and follow the rules. That is why the authorities have welcomed tourists here.”

Apart from sharing his experiences and motivating the viewers to travel, ‘Mallu Traveler’ also offers exciting giveaways for its subscribers. “I always offer giveaways to my subscribers as I am what I am today because of them. I recently gave a bike to a youth. During this trip, I am giving a chance to two people to visit Dubai with the support of my travel partner Afi Ahmed of Smart Travel. There are many people who desperately wish to visit Dubai, but can’t afford it. Some people want to bring their parents here. Two lucky people will now get that opportunity.”

From zero to hero

Shakir has so far travelled to 24 countries and earned more than Rs2 million (Dh100,918) through his YouTube videos in just one year.

“My life is my school and it has taught me that anybody can become a hero from zero if you work hard and take risks. I have worked as a newspaper boy, hotel kitchen staff, call centre employee and a supermarket delivery boy back home. I pedalled a cheap TVS moped for the delivery service. Now I am a brand ambassador for the motorcycles of the same company. I was penniless when I started off my first trip. Today, I am building my house with the money I am earning through my videos and promotions. I cannot sit idle fearing the virus. I am heading to Serbia next to continue to explore the world during the pandemic,” said the father-of-two who has initiated his young children also into vlogging.

Sexual assault case against vlogger 'Mallu Traveler' for molesting Saudi national

Kochi: A sexual assault case has been registered against popular vlogger 'Mallu Traveler' based on a complaint filed by a Saudi national.

The woman, hailing from Saudi Arabia, filed a complaint with the Ernakulam Central Police stating that Shakir Subhan, known as Mallu Traveler, tried to molest her at a hotel after inviting her for an interview.

The incident occurred a week ago. According to the complainant, the Mallu Traveler invited her to a hotel in Ernakulam for an interview. At the hotel, Subhan behaved inappropriately and tried to molest the complainant.

Kerala Police issues lookout notice against Malayali vlogger 'Mallu Traveler'

Police informed the media that Shakir Subhan will be called to the station for questioning. The vlogger is currently out of station, police sources said.

The complaint was filed on Friday.

Shakir Subhan, a travel vlogger, has over 2.2 million followers on Instagram and 2.7 million subscribers on YouTube. Subhan, who worked as a salesman in a supermarket in Dubai, rose to fame through his travel vlogs.

A look-out notice has been issued for a kerala youtuber, 'mallu traveller', in connection with allegations of sexual assault against a saudi arabian woman..

A lookout notice has been issued for Shakir Subhan, popularly known as Mallu Traveller, a prominent travel vlogger from Kerala, in connection with allegations of sexual assault against a Saudi Arabian woman.

The incident is reported to have occurred on September 13 (Wednesday) at a hotel in Kochi, where Shakir was conducting an interview with a Saudi Arabian woman, who has been residing in Kochi for a long time. During the incident, the woman claims that Shakir attempted to assault her while her fiancé briefly left the hotel room.

The case has been registered by the Ernakulam Central Police.

In response to the complaint filed by the 29-year-old Saudi Arabian woman, the police have taken action by issuing a lookout notice against Shakir Subhan.

This notice serves to alert authorities at airports and border crossings, ensuring that if Shakir attempts to enter Kerala, he will be taken into custody for questioning. Besides, the police have summoned Shakir to appear before the investigative team to provide his statement regarding the allegations.

The delay in taking action against the YouTuber was attributed to his absence from the country at the time the complaint was filed. The police had previously requested his prompt cooperation with the investigation. Meanwhile, the complainant's confidential statement has been recorded before a Magistrate as part of the ongoing investigation.

Shakir has taken to social media to deny the allegations against him, maintaining his innocence.

Shakir is famous for his travel videos and gained popularity for his vlogs, including one where he followed quarantine protocols as per government instructions before the Covid-19 pandemic took hold in India. He received widespread praise on social media for his efforts to educate the public on safety measures during the pandemic.
