Maya Bay Tours supports the closure of the beach at Maya Bay in order for the recovery of coral reefs, mangrove forest and the general ecosystem. Our planned itinerary still allows us to sleep overnight in Maya Bay but we do not have access to the beach. To actually see the bay without any boats moored and not a single person or footprint in the sand is truly a sight to behold . If the weather conditions do not suit mooring in Maya Bay we have several other options that are just as beautiful including Loh Moo Dee beach, Plieh bay and Loh Sama bay or Monkey Beach. Each of these locations has an abundance of sparkling bioluminescent plankton so you will get to experience the psychedelic underwater show.

There are other sunset tours on Phi Phi but we are unique and different because:

We leave Phi Phi at 03:00pm and arrive at our destinations as the other tour boats are departing leaving you free to explore and experience the quieter side of Phi Phi’s Andaman Sea and its stunning surroundings.

We have a purpose built 90 foot boat with a 2 western toilets and showers, plenty of sun baking and shady areas, stereo and fresh water on board.

One Night on Maya Bay Beach on Koh Phi Phi Le

“Trust me, it’s paradise. This is where the hungry come to feed. For mine is the generation that travels the globe and searches for something we haven’t tried before. So never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite & never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience— And if it hurts, you know what? It’s probably worth it.” ―  Alex Garland ,  The Beach

Paradise. Never has the word sounded more accurate of a description than the moment I set foot on Maya Bay. It was as if we were transported inside a magical postcard and the beach was ours. After years of dreaming of being on this beach, “the beach”, I was finally here and no movie, picture or postcard can compare to the majesty of actually being there.

After all the day visitors disappeared on long boats, we had 13 hours on Maya Bay all to ourselves. Well, us and the other 30 or so people who were on the Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Tour (a stark difference from the hundreds of visitors each day).

When planning our month-long honeymoon tour of SE Asia, I had two musts, Angkor Wat, and Koh Phi Phi Le. I set out to find a way onto to the island and came across Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Tours . Whereas most people go to the island for just a few hours via long boat, Maya Bay Sleep Aboard offered a more private experience. Maya Bay is a national park and is off limits to all visitors after sundown; except for those with the Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Tour. Wanting to capitalize on my time and secure the best experience possible, we decided to book the 3,000 bhat tour and it would prove to be the best hundred bucks I have ever spent.

Our Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Tour set sail from Koh Phi Phi Don’s dock at 3pm. While aboard, you could buy canned Chang or Singha beers for 1oo bhat. Upon departure, our tour guide Coco explained what we would be doing for the next 18 hours or so. Snorkeling, kayaking, Maya Bay, bbq dinner and sleeping on the beach itself. “Wait, we are sleeping on the beach,” I say to Jason as he turns to me with excited eyes. The description on the site said we would be heading back to the boat to sleep onboard. This was way more than we had bargained for; an entire night on Maya Bay? Hell yes! I was even more relieved because looking at the size of the boat, I had no idea how 35 people on board were going to all fit to sleep.

Our first stop was a look at the Viking Cave where we were given a quick history of its origins. Next, we anchored off of the opposite side of Koh Phi Phi Leh for about two hours of snorkeling the reef and/or taking the kayak to the shore. The reef was shallow, but spectacular with lots of exotic fish to keep you diving in further for a closer look.

After snorkeling, we set sail for Maya Bay enjoying the pineapple and watermelon slices the team served on the way. As we turn the corner of the island, we were welcomed by the first look at Maya Bay and I can’t help but think “wow, I’m finally here.” The water near the beach is turquoise and the sands bright white. As the boat anchors and we anxiously wait to board our long boat to go onshore, I can’t help but be grateful for Maya Bay Sleep Aboard. The beach is swarming with people and long boats. Jason couldn’t believe that we would be the only people on the beach in just under an hour or so. “There has to be another company that does this,” he kept repeating. “There is no way we will be the only 35 people on this island tonight.” But as time passed and we walked along the beach, the crowds got thinner and thinner. Soon, we were indeed the only 35 people on the beach enjoying the final moments of daylight over the expansive cliffs towering around the bay. As I smiled back at Jason, he nodded in agreement. “Great job Babe,” he said.

As night came over the island, the Maya Bay Tour staff had prepared dinner. It was time to eat some Panang Chicken and rice and man was it delicious! They set up mats for everyone to sit on the beach a little way in from the bay. After dinner, we picked up our free buckets (refills were 250 bhat and beers were 100 bhat) and got ready for drinking games with our guide, Coco. We sat in a huge circle on the mats and played Ring of Fire; a card game where anyone who picked up a King had to dump some of their drink in the communal bucket in the center for the person who picked up the final King to drink. With each card action and “waterfall” episode, our group became more and more inebriated and we all soon became fast friends. We were an international melting pot of Americans, Brits, Canadians, French, Puerto Ricans, Brazilians, Thai, Sweds and us Cuban-Americans J We even met another couple from Miami when we recognized each other’s accents from home almost immediately.

After the first round of Ring of Fire, the Miami couple, Jason, and I wanted to check out the beach before the whole group headed to it to swim with the plankton. The beach was quiet, solitary, with just the sound of the waves crashing on the shallow shore and the light of the moon peeking over the cliff. The tide had gone out, making the beach feel vast. “Magical,” I kept telling Jason as we walked along Maya Bay’s shoreline.

At around 11pm, we saw the group heading to the shore. It was time to swim with the bioluminescent plankton! Coco then instructs us to get in the water and move our arms around the water to agitate the plankton. The water was cold, but bearable and once I started flailing around, there were brief trails of glowing water that would trail from my fingers. It wasn’t as bright and present as in the movie but cool nonetheless.

Afterwards, the Maya Bay Tour served some late night bbq chicken wings. Then the group dwindled as many grabbed their mats and sleeping bags and headed to the beach for the night. We stayed and continued to party until the music had to be turned down and then off as they were packing up the camp before going to sleep. The even sparser group then created a circle on one end of the beach and began singing with a guitar. After a few minutes, we grabbed our gear and searched for a good spot on the beach to sleep. As we laid on our mats, billions upon billions of stars were visible. Magical.

The night was rough. Sand isn’t the most forgiving of surfaces to sleep on, but the next morning made it worth it. As the light rose around the bay, I just sat in awe. Many headed to the other side of the island to watch the sunrise, but I was happy with my quiet view. It was about 6:30a when the first longboat touched the sand on Maya Bay bringing to shore 3 new visitors for the day. It was time to pack up and enjoy our final moments on the island. Before boarding our longtail back to the boat, we all took the epic group jump picture!

Once back on board, we set sail immediately and watched as paradise melted from view. Breakfast was served onboard once we were out of Maya Bay. Before heading back to Koh Phi Phi Don, we made a stop on Monkey Beach and had some fun feeding and playing with the monkeys. Some weren’t as nice and caution should be taken as they will bite.

We docked back on Koh Phi Phi Don at 10am and then it was over. We headed back to the Maya Bay Sleep Aboard office and picked up our packs that we had dropped off the day before. I felt a bit melancholy that it was over, but the experience made my lifetime top 5 travel moments. Paradise. It truly was, Paradise.

Maya Bay Beach Thailand; Sleep aboard, sharks and tour

Maya bay beach thailand; sleep aboard and sharks tour, will it open in 2024.

Table of Contents

Do you want to visit the mesmerising  Maya Bay Beach Thailand?  Or, will you have to miss out till it opens in 2024!

This is one of the most stunning destinations to visit in Southeast Asia. A location of breath-taking emerald water, stunning Thailand beach and in the awesome location next to the popular Ko Phi Phi island. This epic destination has been made popular by  The Beach  film which stars  Leanardo Dicaprio , to be fair it is a sweet film. Also, this amazing place is famous for the black-tip sharks, the  Viking cave ,  Pileh Lagoon  and some of the best dive locations in  Phi Phi . However, the big question is  will Maya Bay beach reopen?  This will be discussed in this post.

The Maya Bay is a stunning place to visit however, one question always popping up now –  is Maya Bay beach closed?  I will share all the information you need for visiting here and anything you need to do to be able to see this awesome bay in the Phi Phi islands. After you have seen the bay, there is plenty of hotels in Phi Phi to stay at. So, you should definitely spend a night or 2 on Phi Phi island. Like  Railay beach  in Krabi, this is one of the best locations in Thailand!

Facilities in Maya Bay

Yes, there are facilities when open. There’s a small shack on the beach. The shack sells quench drinks and snacks.

Another thing, there are toilet facilities available on the beach

There is no food available here; those who camp must bring their own.

The activities in Maya Bay

This is one of the best things I did. Snorkelling and diving is very popular throughout the bay. Plenty of tours offer the Maya Bay activities. Visibility is almost 100% which makes it great for snorkelling. Many tour companies bring visitors here to snorkel from Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi Don.

Also, you can go to sea kayaking. Kayaking tour boats come into the bay and moor while letting clients explore.

When did Maya Bay close?

Since June 2018, the bay has been closed as part of a revitalization effort aimed at reviving the area’s decimated corals. Since last year, about 10,000 corals have been replanted in the Maya Bay region.

In what month and year did Thailand close Maya Bay?

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh island, made popular by Leonardo DiCaprio’s 2000 thriller The Beach, was closed indefinitely last year due to serious damage caused by a surge in visitors. It was closed for four months on June 1st, but experts later concluded it wasn’t long enough.

Is The Maya Bay Beach Closed?

Why is Maya Bay closed?  When  The beach  film got released, the bay became one of the most visited beaches in the world and backpackers flocked from all over the world to see its amazing beach. However, the quality of the beach soon spiralled out of control and it quickly became ruined with rubbish. It really is a shame when tourists ruin these stunning destinations of the world.

So,  is Maya Bay Beach still closed?  Yes, Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) decided that this top  Thailand beach will actually stay closed indefinitely . Which is a good thing in my eyes, this would quickly become ruined again by tourists. The same thing happened to Boracay  beach in the Philippines, however that beach is back open now.

Will Maya Bay reopen in 2024?

It was closed in all of 2020 and there is not set date for the beach to reopen anytime soon, it won’t be open in 2020. You will not be able to enter the beach.  However, you can do the boat tours around Maya Bay! This is an awesome way to take in the spectacular views.

Remember, this iconic beach in Thailand was nearly ruined, so it’s a good thing it’s still closed. Until the Thai government can come up with a system to manage the tourists visiting the Maya Bay beach, then it will and should indefinitely stay closed.

Maya bay before and after

If you’re wondering about Maya bay before and after, then you will be pretty amazed. Before the beach was a mess and run down because of the boozy parties etc. However, now it’s a thriving tropical paradise. The plantation is growing back, marine life is thriving, and the air is fresh. David Attenborough would be proud.

How to get from Phuket to Maya Bay?

Do you want to do a tour from Phuket to Maya bay? Then you’re in look as this is a possible option, I would recommend staying on Phi Phi overnight, but if you don’t have time, here is how to do a day trip to Maya beach.

You can pay for a tour in Phuket, then the tour will take you on a 90-minute boar tide from Phuket to the bay in Phi Phi Ley. Which is the smaller island of the 2 Phi Phi islands and this is a great option if you’re short on time. You could also get a tour to the stunning  Phang Nga Bay  in Thailand.

Okay,  so how much is a tour from Phuket to Phi Phi Ley?  The cost of a tour from  Phuket to Phi Phi  is around ($40) for adults and children. But it’s worth the price, it’s amazing

Let’s have a look what this includes;

  • Pickup from your hotel in Phuket.
  • Tour to Maya beach, Viking cave, Monkey beach and other tourist points around the Phi Phi islands.
  • Lunch and drinks.
  • Drop off back at your hotel.

If you wanted, you can just get the  ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi  and then get a long-tail boat around Maya Bay.

You can also travel from  Ao Nang to Phi Phi island  if you’re staying over that way.

Staying in Phuket? Check out the  Phuket travel tips  post.

How does Maya Bay Access visitors?

Tourist Attractions in Maya Bay in the Past

One of the most common modes of transportation was speedboats. Usually, this was accompanied by a long cruise on a tail ferry. There were several tours departing from the Koh Phi Islands. Krabi and Phuket are both good options for getting to Maya Bay.

Maya Bay Beach Thailand sharks

Wow, the sharks are back! Yes, that’s right, Maya bay sharks are back exploring the crystal-clear waters. The sharks were disappeared and it’s no wonder with the millions of tourists that headed to Phi Phi Ley to visit Maya Beach and the stunning bay.

It was not an unusual sight to see 100’s of boats flocking into the bays with tourists. However, all this is has vanished with the new ban that has been set in places. Fast-forward to nowadays, no long-tail boat or any other boat is allowed to cross a certain point in the bay.

So, with fewer boats visiting the bay, the black-tipped  sharks in Maya Bay  are now starting to make an appearance again. This is good to see for nature to take its natural course and get back to how it used to be.

If you take a tour around Maya Bay beach, you may have a good chance of spotting one of the black-tipped sharks that circle in the waters around Phi Phi Ley.

Interested in travel photography? You should check out the  Panasonic Lumix FZ82 review  post. Which is my awesome travel camera!

The Maya Bay Sleep aboard

If you want an awesome experience, you can do the  Maya Bay sleep aboard , which is exactly what it says. A boat that you sleep on the visit the beach. However, due to it being closed, you will only have the opportunity to get within 90-metres of the beach, but this is all you need to appreciate it.

Let’s look at an example itinerary of some of the best island around Phi Phi;

  • Check into the harbour office on Phi Phi Don at around 2:30pm
  • Visit the  Viking cave  first (awesome place to see)
  • Possibly visit  Pileh Bay , Loh Sama bay,  Monkey beach  and Loh Moo Dee beach. You will get to do some sweet snorkelling in Phi Phi dive locations
  • Eat some real-tasty Thai food at around 6pm and then have a few beers and what the glorious Phi Phi sunset
  • You will see the Maya Bay on the sleep aboard
  • Wake up and have breakfast, coffee and tea on board. And, then get taken back to  Phi Phi

maya bay, maya bay thailand, maya bay phi phi, maya bay closed, maya bay sleep aboard, maya bay beach, maya bay tours, maya bay phi phi island, ko phi phi maya bay

Make sure to take with you the usual; A towel, change of clothes, mosquito spray and any other bits like a camera etc.

You can  book the Maya Bay sleep about here .

Maya Bay Tours

If you want to do a tour, you can take a public or private boat tour from Phi Phi island. This is a great way to visit the amazing bays and beaches around Phi Phi.

Also, you can do a speedboat tour to some of the best islands around Phi Phi.

You can pay to have a driver take a group of your around the bays and visit the popular stop off points like;

maya bay, maya bay thailand, maya bay phi phi, maya bay closed, maya bay sleep aboard, maya bay beach, maya bay tours, maya bay phi phi island, ko phi phi maya bay

#Monkey beach

This is where you will get to leave the boat and meet some monkeys on monkey beach 🙂 Just be careful with your camera. I have heard stories of the monkeys taking cameras etc. But, it’s an awesome experience.

the awesome monkey beach on Phi Phi ley

#Viking cave

This is another real cool place to visit on the Phi Phi boat tour! You can’t actually go into the cave, but it’s cool to see. Also, you have the chance to do some snorkelling at the viking cave.

viking cave phi phi, viking cave maya bay

#Pileh Lagoon

This is by-far one of my favourite destinations in Thailand, it is unbelievable how stunning it is! The emerald crystal waters and the amazing limestone will blow your mind! Maya Bay is amazing but Pileh Lagoon is up there with it.

You will have the chance to swim in here if you take a boat tour around Phi Phi.

pileh lagoon phi phi, maya bay, maya bay thailand, maya bay phi phi, maya bay closed, maya bay sleep aboard, maya bay beach, maya bay tours, maya bay phi phi island, ko phi phi maya bay

If I was you I would try and take the private boat tour, as the public boat in Phi Phi is not as good, still fun though!

So, how much is the boat tours? A private boat tour can cost you ($20) between four people and a public boat can cost ($10 upwards).

If you choose the private boat, you will be taken around the islands in a classic Thailand long-tailed boat, it’s a cool experience. Also, the boat tour will last for about 3-4 hours and this includes snacks and drinks.

If you’re on a budget you may want to do the public boat tour around the Phi Phi island and Maya Bay. We did private tour as there was 4 of us, so if you can find a few people to all put the money together, then go for the private option.

Where to stay on Phi Phi

If you’re looking for Maya Bay hotels, you will have to stay on Phi Phi island. There is plenty of amazing hotels and  beach bungalows on Phi Phi . This is why this top Thailand island is one of the best backpacking and honeymoon destinations in the world! A backpacker can stay in a hostel on Phi Phi for less than ($10) a night. Also, you can get beach rooms on Phi Phi with some of the best views of the sunsets in Thailand. So, let’s look at some of the best places to stay on Phi Phi;

  • Beach Bungalows with a view
  • Backpacker’s Hostel
  • Mid-Range Place to stay

Final thoughts

Maya Bay is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world and one of the best islands around Phi Phi. Just because the Maya Bay beach is closed doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the area around it! Whether it’s a long-tail boat or a speedboat tour around Phi Phi, you will love it.

After your speedboat tour around Phi Phi island, I highly recommend staying at one of the Phi Phi hotels for a night. This island is paradise.

The Beach: Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Review

Home » Blog » Thailand » The Beach: Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Review

If “The Beach” is on your Bucket List, you’ll want to read this first! Was staying overnight in this famous bay worth the hefty fee? Read our thoughts on the Maya Bay Sleep Aboard tour.

Maya Bay Sleep Aboard review

There comes a time to be a tourist. Maya Bay – along with Machu Picchu , Salar de Uyuni , and Angkor Wat – is an example of a place that has been on my “touristy list of places to see” for a while now. Made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio’s travel movie The Beach,  I am not the only one who has it on my radar.

I’d heard from friends who had been there that the beach gets crowded early, and you’re lucky to get a picture without 3,000 other foreigners in it. Lame.

How we heard about Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Tour

Well, a traveler I met whilst in South America was the first to tell me otherwise. She told me of the Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Tour which is the only company allowed to bring travelers to “The Beach” in the evening when all the other groups are gone.

From the moment I heard about it, I was hooked. She told me stories of bonfires and sleeping under the stars. And you know what? She was right…

Maya Bay Sleep Aboard tour review

We’d done our prep… read the book, watched the movie (I’d recommend you do the same, in that order , before you visit The Beach).

We were ready when we finally boarded the boat in Koh Phi Phi.

Our Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Experience

With a 3 p.m. departure and a few stops along the way for snorkeling, kayaking, and the famous Viking Caves,  our group of 30 arrived at Maya Bay just as the crowds were leaving. It was pretty cool to step onto the beach as everyone else was heading out.

Maya Bay Sleep Aboard tour review

We had time to explore before dinner and buckets were served. We sat around in a circle, playing drinking games under the stars. A late night barbeque was served, a bonfire built, and songs sang. It was like a scene out of a movie. Hmmm… perhaps “The Beach”?

When it was time to board the boat, we donned life jackets and went for a night swim amongst the bioluminescent plankton. We weren’t expecting much, but OHMYGOSH it was amazing!  (Apparently to people who live near the ocean this phenomenon is not uncommon, and some Californians we met were like, “Oh yeah, we see that plankton ALL the time.” Well, to us non-beach-dwelling people, it was pretty freakin’ cool!)

We floated in groups and at the same time thrashed about – arms and legs flaying – to disturb the plankton. They appeared and flashed like fireflies in the water. Such a magical experience.

And finally, when we were finished squealing about the plankton, we hopped back into the boat to claim a mat to sleep on for a… not so comfortable sleep.

Tip: If possible and if the weather is nice, try to get a spot on the roof of the boat where you can sleep beneath the stars. We weren’t quick enough, and had to sleep on the main deck which was crowded and stuffy.
The worst part came when it began raining and everyone crammed themselves in the same area and the staff pulled down the plastic sheets so the rain wouldn’t come in. Talk about a sauna. Other than the not so great sleeping situation, we had no complaints.

Maya Bay Sleep Aboard tour review

We woke around 6 a.m. so we could enjoy the beach before the other tourist boats arrived. Everyone kind of spread out – swimming, snapping pictures, and just taking it all in. We took one final group shot – jumping of course (if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll understand why) – before heading back to the boat for breakfast and one last swim and one last view of The Beach. Our Beach. At least for that night…

Our final thoughts

Although $90 USD per person was rather expensive on our backpacking budget, we have learned that there are times to save and times to splurge. In our opinion, this splurge was well worth it and a fair price for everything that it included (3 meals, boat, snorkel gear, 1 bucket per person,  rustic accommodation, guide, etc.).

Maya Bay Sleep Aboard tour review

You can certainly still see Maya Bay on a smaller budget. For a price comparison (2015 prices) , we have hear that if you rent your own boat, you’ll be paying around $16 USD per person with an additional $5 USD entrance fee (this doesn’t include food or snorkel gear, though those aren’t significant costs).

If you book a half day trip through one of the many tour companies on Koh Phi Phi, expect to pay around $30 USD (give or take a little depending on quality). Try to arrive as early in the day as possible (aka leave the pier around 6 a.m.) to avoid being completely swarmed with other tourists.

For more information about the Maya Bay Sleep Aboard tour check out their website , where you can also make bookings. (Remember to book your spot in advance because there is a limited number of spots each night).

so good INFO. about Thailand and I think who wants travel this country can use this

Thank you so much for the nice comment ☺

I’m in the beginning stages of planning our trip, but this experience sounds amazing. Any recommendations on what to do with luggage? Will they accommodate? Thanks 🙂

Hi Rebekah, You will probably want seperate our your luggage into a small bag of what you will need for the trip and any large luggage will be either stowed in the ship or in the office on Koh Phi Phi. They know people travel with big luggage so it happens all the time.

I’ve got family (my wife’s cousin) in Koh Phi Phi Don and was there in July. My wife’s cousin, Joy (and Joy’s partner, Bao – a local), have a traditional Thai massage business and two longtail taxiboats on Tonsai Beach West. We stayed in Joy and Bao’s house (in houses that were built on high ground by the Thai government after the tsunami); it was great to experience Phi Phi with the locals. Bao took us out snorkeling around Koh Phi Phi Lee, and a few other spots, including Maya Bay. Loved it. Nice post! the ‘Maya Bay Sleep Aboard Tour’ looks good…

Wow, sounds like a great experience. Thanks for the recommendation! We’ll have to try to make it there if we get back to Koh Phi Phi.

The Only Way to See Maya Bay, Thailand

The limestone cliffs tower over us giving a sense of protection and serenity, making me feel like I’m safe and secure from the outside world. Turquoise waters that turned to glowing fairy dust at night with the bio-luminescent plankton , as each wave washed to the shore sparkling under the moonlight. The peacefulness and exclusivity of being the only people left on the island as the last longboats of the day drove off into the distance and our tour leader sets up camp for the night. I walk down the beach in awe, at awe at what stands before me, at awe at the view, the scenery, the way that it felt like we were the only ones in existence. “ Maya Bay was made to be seen like this,” I think to myself.

Only the day before my sister and I stood on that same beach, but we weren’t alone—we were surrounded by hundreds of tourists trying to snap the best shot they could get at this famed Leonardo DiCaprio movie scene from his movie The Beach . The hustle and bustle, the chaos, boat loads of tourists flooding in; this was not what we had imagined this beach being like.

Maya Bay

Thankfully we had planned two visits to Maya Bay—one on a multi-island day tour, where the beach was flooded with tourists and another on an overnight excursion, The Maya Bay Sleep Aboard trip which was limited to only about 20 other people. Although the Sleep Aboard tour had a heftier price tag (around $85-100 USD) then some of the other popular tours from the island of Koh Phi Phi , I was thankful we had booked it. At around 3:00pm we boarded our boat at the port and headed out to visit some neighbouring islands and beaches. Since we had done the daytime island hopping tour earlier in our trip, we repeated some of these visits but when you’re out on the water on a gorgeous day, you don’t really care.

After some kayaking, snorkeling, and swimming, we headed off to Maya Bay, where we would be anchoring and sleeping for the night. We had a smaller boat that took us over to the beach right around the time most tourists were leaving for the day. Locals scoured the beaches to pick up any belongings or trash that had been left behind from the hundreds of tourists that covered the beach earlier in attempt to restore and keep the beach clean and beautiful. It seemed bizarre being here, kind of like we were doing something that wasn’t allowed. We felt like VIPs as we waved goodbye to the final tourists on the beach and roamed around, snapping pics, and soaking in the bay that we had all to ourselves. Even though the rain poured down, we didn’t care—it gave us relief from the days heat, and when you’re in a place like this, very few things can really ruin it.

Maya Bay

Once we had taken enough pictures to satisfy us, we headed up the beachy path to where our tour guide had set up some straw mats for us to sit on, and locals began to cook us up some food and set up our makeshift bar where we could help ourselves to our complimentary “bucket” for the night. When we all settled in, on began the sing-a-longs, drinking games and socializing as nighttime fell upon us. The feeling of being the only people left in this amazing place was one that is hard to describe. We’d team up and head down the little dark path to the washrooms; silence spread across the island, eeriness crept upon us each time we ventured away from our campsite. No one inhabits this island except for the locals that care for the little snack shack, the beach, the washrooms, etc.

We spent most of the evening here, roaming the beach, swishing our feet around in the water to watch the bio-luminescent plankton light up, until we headed back on the little boats to take us back to our main ship for the night. Once we arrived back on board, some people jumped in the water to be mesmerized by the plankton more, where others grabbed themselves the thin mats and makeshift pillows and sleeping bags where we all scattered out on the floor and deck to lay our heads to rest for the night. It wasn’t the comfiest sleep, but we rose with the sun as our guide put us on the boats to bring us back for some more time on the beach at 6am before any tourists arrived for the day. The one thing they really wanted us to get from this tour was as much time possible on this island alone.

Thai Islands

As we enjoyed our morning in the bay, soon it was time to head back to our main boat and head on over to a tiny beach that was inhabited by only monkeys. My sister and I took this opportunity to get some kayaking in, and we got up close and personal to where the monkeys were just waiting for some snacks. Despite the sign hanging above us saying “Do not feed the monkeys,” that didn’t seem to stop our guide who had handfuls of bananas to hand over to the creepishly human-like fellows. It took us by surprise when he decided to throw a banana on our kayak and soon our boat was completely swarmed by the monkeys.

To check out other content from my travels in Southeast Asia, here is a reading list I’ve compiled

All aboard, we headed back on the boat to head back to the mainland. Our overnight trip was coming to an end and we were departing the boat with the best possible image you could have of Maya Bay, and one that many tourists don’t leave with. Like many tourist attractions, you can often be disappointed when you finally arrive to find it swarmed with so many people that it’s hard to enjoy. That’s the feeling we had when we visited Maya Bay in the day with all the other tourists. After our night on the beach, we felt like we got a taste of something that many people don’t seek out, we came back to shore with great new friends from across the globe that we got to share this exclusive experience with, and we were blessed and happy with the opportunity we were given.

Maya Bay Sleep Abroad

If you are visiting Koh Phi Phi , and are hoping to take a trip to Maya Bay to see this gorgeous place—it 100% is worth it, but only if you opt for a tour like the Maya Bay Sleep Aboard. For under $100 USD you can get an experience that will make you truly appreciate the Thai islands and all they have to offer, you will escape the madness and tourist traps and leave filled with happiness, not regret or disappointment.

Update as of April 2021: Since 2018 Maya Bay has been closed to tourists in order to restore the severely damaged environment due to over tourism. However, from what I can tell, this tour is still an option, you just do not go into the beach/on land at all.

Lauren, thanks for review. But on tripadvisor many visitors has complained about the dirty sleeping bags, dirty boat. And i want to know , can we sleep on beach if we have our own sleeping bags and all. Is it permitted.

Hi there! To be honest, it’s not going to be luxury accommodations by any meanings. You all sleep on the deck(s) of the boat together on little mats with sleeping bags. You don’t have the ability to sleep on the beach as far as I know. No one was camping there when I was there so I don’t believe this is an option. But if you’re paranoid about their sleeping bags and such – just bring your own with you for the boat and if you can see past the sleeping arrangements not being the most comfortable, I strongly encourage you to do this experience as it is incredible and one of a kind!

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

5,000+ Club

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
