It’s a must-visit for excellent shopping, pampering in one of its many spas which are fed by the natural hot springs, and of course, some unrivalled gourmet restaurants.

You’ll feel like a star driving along its wide, tree-lined boulevards visited by many a famous name over the years.

Located in the Sonoran Desert in Southern California, Palm Springs also has a whole bunch of great day trips waiting to be undertaken in its outlying areas; with endless valleys, beaches and mountains of the state lying around every corner.

Here are fifteen of the best day trips from Palm Springs :

1. Salton Sea

Created completely by accident, Salton Sea is an interesting spot with a fascinating history of which you can learn more in the visitor center.

Just over a hundred years ago the area was flooded by the Colorado River thanks to an engineering mishap.

There’s also a museum to browse, which focuses on the ecology of the area.

There are several semi-ghost towns scattered about the region; almost completely abandoned by all former inhabitants, they make for an interesting diversion on your way home.

2. Joshua Tree national park

The intriguing Joshua Tree National Park is certainly worth a visit from Palm Springs with its unique natural flora: the Joshua trees.

These scrubby trees stand out starkly amidst the desert landscape, and provide some excellent opportunities for photography alongside the ever-present cacti and boulders.

There’s hiking on offer in the Hidden Valley trail, and the national park is also one of America’s top Dark Skies sites, making it fantastic for stargazing if you’re there at night.

This national park is famous across the country, so the option to visit should not be lightly passed up.

3. Amboy Crater

Located just off the famous Route 66, the National Natural Landmark of Amboy Crater is well worth a visit to stretch your legs.

The lower half of an aged volcano, the hike isn’t all that easy, owing to the crumbled lava that covers the footpath, but it’s rewarding enough to make it worthwhile.

To the crater, it’s about two or three hours’ walk, and when you arrive you’ll be greeted with an alien sight that looks more like a moonscape, complete with lava lakes that are now dry.

Take plenty of water to rehydrate in the desert heat; there are no convenience stores around.

4. Route 66

You can hardly pass up the chance to drive along this iconic road at some point in your life, and from Palm Springs it’s easily accessible.

Simply spend the day cruising around and soaking up the majesty of the desert; perhaps stopping off at some of the notable roadside attractions along the way.

Many spots down the road have gone through an era of thriving, then abandonment, making for an interesting aesthetic, but some are having a revival thanks to new interest; such as Roy’s Motel and Café, which now houses art installations and vintage cars.

5. Indian Canyons

Providing many opportunities to get out and about among nature’s wonders, Indian Canyons is also importantly the ancestral home of the Cahuilla Indians, of the Agua Caliente band.

The main viewpoint offers an interesting tribal museum, but there are plenty more active options for entertainment; including horseback rides around Murray Canyon or a hike up to a 60-foot waterfall.

If you’re lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of the endangered Bighorn sheep roaming the bare bones landscape.

6. Los Angeles

You can hardly spend time in Palm Springs without taking a day trip to the tree-lined boulevards of LA. Mingle with all the celebrities, take a tour of Hollywood and spot some famous names along the walk of fame, or simply soak up the sun and hit the beach.

Spend the afternoon hanging out at one of LA’s many gorgeous cafes and restaurants, which are always great spots for simply sitting back and people-watching.

Just make sure to take plenty of in-car entertainment with you in case you get caught up in that infamous traffic on your way there or back.

7. Anza Borrego State Park

This Badlands landscape offers a whole host of opportunities for fun: hiking, sightseeing, photography options and some hard-core ATV or dirt bike trails if that’s what floats your boat.

It hardly feels like anything else on earth, with its crazy natural formations and barren landscape stretching for miles on end.

For a brief return to civilisation before you head back to Palm Springs, you can stop off at nearby Borrego Springs for a drink and a bite to eat, and to recount the adventures of the day.

8. Santa Monica

The Santa Monica area of greater Los Angeles is probably your best bet for a beach break.

Third Street Promenade is a popular spot for grabbing something for breakfast; it’s also within walking distance of the beach and the Santa Monica Pier, which offers a whole host of entertainment options for kids and adults alike in the Pacific Park.

If you get bored of the beach and the amusements, there’s also the option to hire bikes and tootle along the beachside path.

It’s an all-round enjoyable option for a relaxing day out of Palm Springs.

9. Idyllwild

This mountainous region is just as idyllic as the name suggests, and at just over an hour and a half’s scenic drive from downtown Palm Springs, it’s the perfect option to escape for the day.

At a much higher elevation than Palm Springs, it offers a literal breath of fresh air compared to the surrounding desert.

There are plenty of outdoorsy activities on offer here; from hiking and biking to rock climbing and some fabulous vistas from the many viewpoints.

It’s definitely a great place to bring a picnic and enjoy nature.

10. Coyote Ridge

Located just twenty miles, or a half hour drive away from central Palm Springs, Coyote Ridge is a brilliant place to escape into nature, with awe-inspiring views out over the Santa Gorgonio Mountains.

There are some excellent guided horse riding trails spread out through this area, and a whole lot of wildlife and plant life to make the excursion that bit more interesting: red tailed hawks, eagles and kestrels can be seen soaring above.

11. Pioneertown

Founded in 1946 by an eccentric group of investors from Hollywood, Pioneertown certainly offers something a bit different from your average day trip.

Dreamed up as a live movie set, and designed around the theme of an 1870’s frontier town, the place was used for the filming of over 50 movies and some television shows too, throughout the 1940s and 50s; though it has today fallen out of use for that purpose.

Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace is now the major draw with their lively food, drink and music events.

Well worth a visit for a unique day out.

12. Whitewater preserve

Hiking trails abound in this natural wonderland, where you’ll find yourself roaming for miles without running out of things to see.

You’ll have the chance to spot wildlife as wide-ranging as bobcats, bears, deer and coyotes, as well as the rare Bighorn sheep that are a unique feature of this area.

While fishing isn’t allowed in the ponds scattered throughout the preserve, you can still spot the colourful rainbow trout, which is great entertainment for the kids too.

13. Tahquitz canyon

A good, easy option for those with children in tow, Tahquitz Canyon provides a reasonably easy two-mile hiking loop with some excellent views of the scenery.

It’s a fairly short hike, likely to take under two hours, and the admission price is minimal.

The hike features a spectacular 60-foot waterfall, which might be a good spot for a picnic if you time it right.

This is definitely a good way to go if you don’t feel like doing anything too strenuous but still want to escape to the countryside.

14. Coachella valley preserve

A glorious natural wonderland can be found in the Coachella Valley Preserve, and this is a great place to spend the day.

Pack a picnic to munch on as you marvel at the scenes spread out before you, and take your pick of hiking from the 28 miles of trails on offer.

There’s yet more opportunities for wildlife spotting.

All this lies just ten miles away from Palm Springs and is an ideal choice for a tranquil break.

15. San Diego

A bit further afield than some of the other options, but still well worth the visit, is San Diego.

This vibrant city has a lot to give.

It’s a hub for arts and culture too, with over 17 performing arts venues and museums, as well as outdoor theatre in summer and plenty of live music events regularly hosted throughout the city.

If inner city life isn’t what you’re looking for, then there is still over 70 miles of coastline waiting to be explored; including plenty of good surf breaks and some great spots for a barbecue or bonfire in the evening.

What’s the best time to visit Palm Springs?

The best time to visit Palm Springs during the year is from October until May . In the summer, the valley experiences sweltering heat and dry weather, so make sure to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen. If you visit during the summer and plan on hiking, make sure to also get an early start on your hikes before the heat sets in! However, while it is generally sunny 350 days a year, the desert can get quite cold during the winter. Driving up into the surrounding San Jacinto Mountain Range or through Joshua Tree National Park, you may even get snow! 

The busiest season for Palm Springs is from March to May, during the festival season where flocks of people come to Coachella and Stagecoach . However, flights from most major cities in Canada and the US arrive at Palm Springs International Airport almost daily. Due to the number of flights from November-April, it is very easy to find deals. 

For those that don’t mind the drive, you can also look into flying into LAX instead and renting a car to drive to Palm Springs. It is only a 2-hour drive (depending on LA traffic) and may be cheaper or easier for some people to find deals this way.

Even if you only have a day to visit, don’t be discouraged from trying to hit all of the key tourist spots first as many of them are still must-see spots. Here is an ideal itinerary for an action-packed day in Palm Springs California, from sunrise to sunset. 

Start your day in a tram

A trip up the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway , which is the world’s largest rotating tramcar, is just what you need to start your day. You will get to travel over two-and-one-half miles along the cliffs of the Chino Canyon to the pristine wilderness of the Mt. San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness Area . During this ten-minute journey, tram cars rotate slowly to offer spectacular vistas of the valley below. The Tram’s Mountain Station at 8,516 feet elevation offers two dine-in restaurants, great viewpoints, over 50 miles of hiking trails, and a natural history museum.

Alternative Option: If you don’t want to visit Joshua Tree or the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, then the Coachella Valley Vista Point offers great views of the entire Coachella Valley and is easy to access. Drive about five miles up Hwy 74 as it snakes its way out of Palm Desert and into the San Jacinto Mountains. On a nice clear day, you might see the north tip of the Salton Sea that lies to the southeast! There’s also a small visitor’s center for those wanting more information on the area.

Walk down Palm Canyon Drive

After this, make your way into old Palm Springs. Take a walk down Palm Canyon Drive and pop into some great shops to experience more Modernism-type art and retro vibes. 

TIP: Find a cafe or ice cream shop and stop in for a “Date Shake”. These are vanilla milkshakes with dates from the multiple date farms located in the Coachella Valley. They may sound weird, but are delicious!

Explore the beautiful houses

From downtown Palm Springs, take a drive around some of the surrounding neighborhoods at the beautiful Midcentury Modern houses. People in Palm Springs take great pride in the upkeep and appearance of these houses. Keep an eye out for some of the beautiful houses that showcase colorful doors or retro cars as these often make great photo spots.

Around this area, you can also find the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway . It is the nickname given to the iconic 1960 Alexander Estate that Elvis and Priscilla Presley had stayed in 1966. It’s not open for walk-in’s but you can book ahead for a tour .

Check out the Air Museum

Finally, to finish off your one day in Palm Springs, you will need to spend a couple of hours of your afternoon at the Palm Springs Air Museum . Adjacent to the Palm Springs Airport, the Palm Springs Air Museum has an exceptional collection of WWII aircraft and flight memorabilia. Inside is a movie theatre and they even offer occasional flight demonstrations.

You can climb inside a functioning Boeing B17 Flying Fortress, a bomber extensively used against Germans during WWII. For any aviation-enthusiasts especially, a stop here is a must!

Have a fabulous dinner

After your busy day, it’s time to treat yourself to a great dinner. Two popular spots in Palm Springs are Las Casuelas Nuevas and the Schnitzelhaus .

If you feel like having Mexican food while in Palm Springs, the best place to visit is the charming, Las Casuelas Nuevas. This restaurant has been a true local favorite for the 40+ years that they have been serving Mexican in the Coachella Valley. The restaurant is in an older building with a beautiful atmosphere and a wonderful patio. The food is all priced quite reasonably, making it great for groups. They often even have live music in the evenings! 

Or if you are in the mood for German you 100% need to visit Schnitzelhaus, located off of Country Club Drive! This is as authentically German as you can get in the Coachella Valley. It is not a large restaurant but is traditionally-decorated so you feel as if you are truly getting the full Bavarian experience. Even though the food is expensive, it is definitely worth it for the portions and quality! 

After that, head back to the hotel to get a good night’s sleep! There are a number of great day trip options if you are looking to stay in Palm Springs longer.

Where to stay in Palm Springs, California?

If you’re looking for a true mid-century experience, then staying in one of the retro motels is highly recommended! There are numerous hotels/motels around the main part of the city and close to the main Palm Canyon Drive area. Many have an elaborate list of famous visitors, ranging from the 1930s and through the golden age of Elvis. Most hotels have been modernized and updated but have luckily still kept their original look that has changed little since the mid-1950s.

Del Marcos Hotel

The Del Marcos Hotel is only a 10-minute drive from the airport (PSP) and is an adult-only hotel, so this a great option to consider if you are wanting a weekend away without kids. Complimentary Palm Springs Art Museum Passes and Discounted Tram Tickets are available, as is a continental breakfast and parking with no resort fees.

If you are looking at staying in another area, then the Westin Desert Willow Villas , located in Palm Desert, is a place to consider. This villa resort offers many amenities for those looking for more of a resort experience. A great option for having more space available but without the greater expense of renting a house.

Hotel Paseo

If you really want to relax and enjoy yourself, Hotel Paseo is the place. Not only do you get free parking and access to free bikes, but this place also has an outdoor pool, hot tub, and even evening entertainment. The rooms are very well equipped, and you will also get free toiletries in them. Furthermore, Hotel Paseo also serves an excellent American breakfast, plus you are in the Palm Springs’ center. Prepare to enjoy!

There aren’t many hostel options available in Palm Springs as it is generally not a backpacker spot. That being said, there are still a number of cheaper motels and more affordable options available that won’t break the bank. Day trips from Palm Springs

Joshua tree national park.

Just to the north of Palm Springs, you can find one of the United States’ most incredible National Parks, the Joshua Tree National Park . It is essential for any visitor to take the time for a beautiful drive through the Joshua Trees, distinct rock formations, and unique landscapes that the park offers. This otherworldly desert-scape makes you feel so far outside the city, but it only takes about an hour to drive to one of the main entrance gates. The varied landscape you’ll experience on the drive shows the contrast between the Colorado and Mojave Deserts that both make up the park.

Pioneertown

For fans of old western movies, a day trip from Palm Springs to Pioneertown in the Yucca Valley would be a great option! In 1946, Pioneertown was founded by a group of Hollywood actors and investors that dreamed of creating an Old West set that doubled as a town. Today, you can still visit Pioneertown and admire the 1880s-style facades. More than 50 films and television shows were filmed here throughout the years!

Salton Sea is also an interesting option for a day trip. A result of an engineering accident is surrounded by a few towns that have been almost completely deserted, but there is a museum here which you can visit. In any case, a very interesting destination.

Extra tips for visiting Palm Springs

Remember that due to the size of the Coachella Valley, having a car is pretty necessary for fitting everything in during your visit! You can definitely use Uber, but this may rack up large bills if you use it for greater distances across the cities. 

There’s so much to do in Palm Springs. Whether you are spending a day, week, or month in the desert, you will not be at loss for new places to explore. The desert really has its charm! During our road trip from LA to Joshua Tree, we stumbled upon the unexpected charm of Palm Springs—a city that proved to be an awesome detour on our adventure. While I had envisioned a city pulsating with LA-style glamour, Palm Springs revealed itself as a haven where stars escape the buzz to unwind. From mid-century modern wonders to outdoor adventures under the Californian sun, a day trip to Palm Springs is ready to give a unique blend of style and warmth.

Is Palm Springs, California worth visiting?

Nestled in the heart of the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs is a jewel that sparkles under the Californian sun, and yes, it’s absolutely worth a visit!

I feel like a day trip to Palm Springs is the perfect way to get a taste of what the city has to offer. This desert paradise has long been a playground for the stars, drawing celebrities and travelers alike with its unique blend of retro charm and modern luxury.

The city has a rich architectural heritage, with a treasure trove of mid-century modern gems waiting to be explored. Whether you’re a fan of design, nature, or just a serene escape from the city bustle, Palm Springs has something for everyone.

What is the distance from Los Angeles to Palm Springs?

Palm Springs is just a two-hour drive from Los Angeles. The approximately 120-mile journey takes you through scenic landscapes, offering a perfect road trip opportunity. The drive itself is part of the adventure, with panoramic views and the changing scenery as you leave the bustling city behind and approach the tranquility of Palm Springs.

Fuel your day trip to Palm Springs with a visit to 4 Paws Coffee Co , a local gem that serves up delicious coffee creations. Whether you prefer a classic brew or a specialty concoction, this coffee spot is a perfect pitstop for coffee lovers. I absolutely loved my vanilla marshmallow iced latte! And their bagel sandwich was a great grab-and-go breakfast.

Andreas Canyon Palm Springs Trail

For nature enthusiasts, the Andreas Canyon Palm Springs Trail offers an easy but captivating desert hiking experience. The $12 entry fee (per person) not only grants access to this specific trail but also covers other trails in the area.

Andreas Canyon Trail is a 1-mile loop trail. When we visited on a weekday in January at 9 am we had the trail completely to ourselves! The weather was in the high 60s and we were comfortable in a sweatshirt and athletic pants.

This particular trail only took about 30 minutes to complete which is what makes it perfect for a day trip to Palm Springs, but if you have a little more than a day be sure to check out some of the other awesome trails in the area.

Thrift Shopping

One of the highlights of our Palm Springs day trip was diving into the world of secondhand treasures at Revivals , a local thrift shop with four convenient locations. I unearthed some remarkable finds , including two effortlessly cool men’s leather jackets that became unexpected fashion gems in my collection. I literally wore them with just about every outfit for the rest of our trip!

Whether you’re into fashion, decor, or quirky collectibles, Revivals offers an exciting journey through pre-loved finds, each with its own unique story to tell.

Palm Springs Art Museum

For a cultural experience, the Palm Springs Art Museum is a must-visit. This institution showcases a diverse collection of art, including contemporary pieces, Native American artifacts, and modern sculptures.

The museum’s architecture itself is a work of art, and the exhibits offer a glimpse into the creative spirit that has defined Palm Springs. It’s an ideal stop for those seeking a blend of artistic inspiration and a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural landscape.

Tickets are $16 for adults, but if you can visit on a Thursday evening between 5-8 pm admission is free!

We were here on a Tuesday so we weren’t able to include this in our Palm Springs itinerary (they are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

Casino Experience

If you’re feeling lucky, Palm Springs offers several casinos where you can try your hand at gaming. Many casinos even provide enticing promotions and free play if it’s your first time!

It’s no Las Vegas , but it is a thrilling way to add a touch of excitement to your Palm Springs day trip, and who knows, you might just walk away with some extra cash in your pocket. I ended up walking out $20 ahead after playing my $10 free play!

Explore Downtown Palm Springs

Stroll through downtown Palm Springs, where the streets are lined with eclectic shops, art galleries, and charming boutiques. Immerse yourself in the local atmosphere as you browse through unique finds and perhaps pick up a souvenir to remember your day trip.

Visit Forever Marilyn

While you’re exploring Downtown Palm Springs, marvel at the iconic statue of Marilyn Monroe, aptly named “Forever Marilyn”. This larger-than-life tribute to the Hollywood legend captures a moment from her famous film “The Seven Year Itch.” It’s a popular spot for photos and a fitting homage to the glamour that has long been associated with Palm Springs.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is an engineering marvel that takes you from the desert floor to the San Jacinto Mountains. The tram ride offers breathtaking views of the Coachella Valley, and once at the mountain station, you can explore hiking trails and enjoy panoramic vistas.

While there is a fee for parking ($15) and the tram ride ($30 per person), the experience is well worth it for the unparalleled scenery and the title of riding the largest rotating aerial tramway in the world!

If you have time to do hiking at the top, be sure to dress warmly. The day we visited in January it was 22 degrees at the top! Because we just had one day in Palm Springs (and because we did not dress warmly enough) we opted not to do any of the trails, but the ride up and down alone was epic enough!

Dinner at Azucar

Conclude your day trip to Palm Springs with a phenomenal dinner at Azucar , where the culinary offerings are as vibrant as the atmosphere. From exquisite dishes to impeccable service, Azucar provides a dining experience that reflects the diverse flavors of Palm Springs.

We started with their Azucar salad and a refreshing mocktail (which I craved the entire rest of our trip) and ended with their King Salmon. Everything was bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection.

The vibe is pretty intimate here and there isn’t too much seating, so if you are visiting over the weekend or during the busy season make sure you make a reservation in advance!

Have a little extra time on your hands in Palm Springs?

Soak in the sun at palm springs pool parties.

While Palm Springs is renowned for its lively pool party scene, the peak season for these vibrant gatherings typically aligns with warmer months. Unfortunately, during our January visit, we missed out on the pool party festivities.

However, if you’re planning your day trip during the summer, prepare to be immersed in the energetic ambiance of poolside celebrations. Many hotels and resorts host pool parties with music, refreshing drinks, and a lively atmosphere, providing the perfect setting to bask in the California sun.

Relax and Unwind at Palm Springs Spas

Palm Springs boasts an array of luxurious spas where you can unwind and pamper yourself. Indulge in a rejuvenating spa experience to round off your day trip. Treatments range from massages to facials, ensuring a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle.

Keep in mind that spa offerings may vary, so check in advance for availability and services during your visit.

Observatory at the Rancho Mirage Public Library

If you’re visiting on a Thursday or Saturday you can experience Observatory Public Exploration Night at the Rancho Mirage Public Library. Peer through powerful telescopes and explore the wonders of the night sky with the guidance of knowledgeable astronomers!

They also do “behind the scenes” Observatory facility tours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 3:00 pm.

Drag Brunch

While exploring the vibrant scene of Palm Springs, we couldn’t help but be drawn to the allure of a Drag Brunch—a quintessential weekend activity that adds an extra dash of glam to the city’s entertainment offerings.

Our visit unfortunately coincided with the weekdays, and we missed the chance to experience the fabulousness of a Palm Springs Drag Brunch. It’s a regret we carry, knowing that this lively and entertaining event is a must for those fortunate enough to be in town over the weekend.

So, if your Palm Springs itinerary aligns with the weekend vibes, be sure to add Drag Brunch to your list for a dose of dazzling performances, delicious bites, and an unforgettable celebration of uniqueness and creativity!

Visit Joshua Tree

If Palm Springs isn’t a stop on your way to Joshua Tree National Park already and you have some extra time in the area, I suggest visiting its enchanting desert landscapes and captivating rock formations.

Located just about an hour away, Joshua Tree is a natural wonder that promises a unique and awe-inspiring experience. Towering Joshua Trees, rugged mountains, and fascinating geological formations create a surreal atmosphere that feels like stepping into another world.

Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast seeking hiking trails, a stargazer eager for celestial displays, or simply someone yearning for a tranquil escape, Joshua Tree has something for everyone. If time allows during your Palm Springs adventure, I can assure you that immersing yourself in the magical scenery of Joshua Tree is a captivating addition to your Palm Springs itinerary.

When is the best time to visit Palm Springs?

Choosing the right time to visit Palm Springs largely depends on your preferences. We visited Palm Springs in January, and while the mornings and evenings had a crisp chill, the daytime offered that perfect California warmth.

It was the off-season, meaning fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere. Missing out on the pool party season was a trade-off, but the tranquility and the ability to explore the city at our own pace made it worthwhile.

If you’re seeking a vibrant and energetic scene, the summer months might be the perfect fit. Palm Springs in summer embraces its desert essence, and the pool parties kick into high gear. Expect lively events, music, and a pulsating atmosphere.

Just be prepared for the heat – it’s a dry heat, but it’s still the desert, after all. Ultimately, whether you prefer the serene off-season charm or the lively summer vibes, Palm Springs offers an enticing experience year-round.

Where to stay in Palm Springs, California

Whatever your preference, Palm Springs has a range of accommodations to suit different tastes and budgets. We opted for the lively and colorful vibes of the Saguaro Hotel , a place that radiates energy and offers a budget-friendly option. The Saguaro might not exude luxury, but its vibrant atmosphere and potentially lively summer pool parties, make it a fun choice for the adventurous traveler.

If you’re seeking a more luxurious experience that still doesn’t break the bank, indulge yourself at The Palm Springs Hotel , a chic and sophisticated retreat that caters to those with a taste for upscale amenities.

And finally, the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel stands as a beacon of luxury and sophistication. With its chic design, rooftop pool boasting panoramic views of the surrounding desert, and impeccable service, this hotel exudes the signature style and comfort of the Kimpton brand.

Additional Palm Springs tips

• Parking and Logistics: Some places may offer designated parking areas, so it’s wise to check in advance. Fortunately, we encountered no challenges finding parking for the attractions we visited. Additionally, certain areas downtown even provided free parking, making our exploration hassle-free.
• Seasonal Considerations: While Palm Springs enjoys year-round sunshine, the nature of activities, especially pool parties, can vary with the seasons. Check for any seasonal events or promotions during your visit.
• Local Etiquette: Embrace the relaxed atmosphere of Palm Springs, known for its casual and welcoming vibe. Respect the locals, and if you’re new to the area, don’t hesitate to ask locals for recommendations or insights to enhance your experience. The people here were genuinely SO KIND.
• Navigating Attractions: Palm Springs is a dynamic destination, and some online information may not be up-to-date. During our visit, we encountered a few changes, like the absence of the Desert X art installation. Keep an open mind and be prepared for unexpected surprises or modifications to your planned itinerary.
• Robolights Art Installation: While we were excited to explore the renowned Robolights art installation, we discovered that it has relocated to a private residence. Attempting to visit might require scheduling an appointment, but, unfortunately, our attempt to connect went unanswered. It’s recommended to verify the current status and accessibility of such attractions before making them a part of your itinerary.

Explore Southern California on these top 5 day trips from Palm Springs

Palm Springs is one of Southern California’s most popular destinations – for good reason. And its appeal doesn’t end at the city limits.

With its luxurious resorts, world-class golf courses, hot springs and acclaimed restaurant scene, the city itself might have all you could imagine. But a stay in in the desert town can also serve as a launching-off point for exploring some of the top attractions in the region. From mountains and coastal cliffs to wineries and desert vistas , we’ve picked a few favorite spots, each under two hours away by car, that will amaze you. Here’s our list of the best day trips from Palm Springs.

Best day trip for outdoor adventures

Located in the San Bernardino National Forest, with a sparkling mountain lake as its centerpiece, Big Bear offers a fabulous escape from the desert heat. A host of winter activities include skiing and snowboarding  – and you’ll find plenty of fun in warmer months as well. Open year-round, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo is a rehabilitation facility and sanctuary for wild animals, including bald eagles, grizzly bears and snow leopards. 

From spring through fall you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and zip-lining. You can also place yourself in the center of the action on a pontoon boat, from which you can take in the beauty of the exceptional surroundings. Wander over to Big Bear Village for dinner (we love the Indian and Nepali specialties served up at  Himalayan Restaurant ). Afterward, enjoy live music at The Cave , an upscale concert venue.

How to get to Big Bear: Driving is the best way to get to Big Bear, although the windy mountain roads can be harrowing during the winter and chains or snow tires may be required. The drive time is about an hour and 40 minutes from Palm Springs, with the have a choice of two possible routes: Hwy 18 via the I-10/Hwy 62/Hwy 247 through Yucca Valley, or Hwy 38 via the I-10 through Redlands. 

Best day trip for wine tasting and art

You don’t have to be a wine lover to enjoy the vineyard-dotted rolling hills of Temecula. But it doesn’t hurt, as you’ll be well-equipped to sample internationally acclaimed vintages from several dozen wineries. At the top of the list should be a visit to Akash , a family-owned and -operated winery with a welcoming open-air patio. Choose from a variety of local food trucks and pop-up food artisans on the weekends. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can book a wine tour with Sidecar Tours , which will take you through the vineyards on the back of a tandem motorcycle.

After a day of sipping, head over to Old Town Temecula  to check out public art that ranges from mosaics to murals and sculptures. The one-room Temecula Valley Museum showcases the region’s history with permanent exhibits depicting both the indigenous Luiseño people and the Mission San Luis Rey period. Be sure to stop by Temecula Olive Oil Company to sample a variety of oils and vinegars.

How to get to Temecula: As it’s only an hour and 15 minutes away from Palm Springs, getting to Temecula is fairly simple if you have a car. You can take I-10 West to Hwy 60 West to I-215 South to I-15. Before heading back to the desert, fuel up at Espadín , which offers Mexican favorites.

Joshua Tree 

Best day trip for experiencing nature.

Known for its mystical beauty and landscapes filled with seemingly gravity-defying boulder formations, Joshua Tree never disappoints. Hikers will want to explore the Black Rock Canyon Panorama Loop, which follows a sandy wash through dense forests and narrow canyons to a steep ridge that rewards you with panoramic views. (Allow yourself a few hours to tackle this and other trails, and be sure to bring plenty of water.) Joshua Tree was recently designated an International Dark Sky Park , and if you stay after night falls you might be treated to a symphony of shooting stars. 

Just a 20-minute drive away is picture-perfect  Pioneertown . Founded in 1946 by a group of Hollywood investors including actors Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, this unique attraction was conceived as a mix of Old West–style film set and functioning village, with exterior facades of saloons and jails housing ice cream parlors and motels. Nowadays, the most happening place here is Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace , a honky-tonk barbecue restaurant and music venue.  

How to get to Joshua Tree: Joshua Tree National Park is about a one-hour drive from Palm Springs off the I-10 East. There are three main entrances into the park and two main roads, Park Boulevard and Pinto Basin Road. It is best not to rely on GPS directions to navigate to Joshua Tree, as many navigation systems will attempt to route you off-road through the backcountry, which could be dangerous. Instead, consult an old-school map before you start your trip.

Salvation Mountain

Best day trip for out-of-the-ordinary art.

If you’re looking for a getaway that’s not far from Palm Springs but feels worlds away , then Niland in California’s Imperial County should be at the top of your list. Created by local resident Leonard Knight,  Salvation Mountain  started as a small monument made of dirt and cement and now encompasses numerous murals and areas painted with Bible verses and religious motifs. The site remains in pristine condition thanks to a non-profit organization by the same name that offers guided tours.

Nearby Slab City is a diverse community of artists, homesteaders and retirees living off the grid on their own terms. Home to about 150 residents year-round and 4000 in the winter months, the community occupies the site of a former military base. Today, it’s known as the “Last Free Place on Earth” given residents’ libertarian spirit.

How to get to Salvation Mountain: You’ll need to drive deep into the desert to get to Salvation Mountain, as there is no public transportation option. It’s about a 90-minute drive from Palm Springs off Hwy 111 at Niland, not far from Bombay Beach at the Salton Sea. The exact address is on Beal Road in Calipatria; Salvation Mountain is located right on the side of the road.

Laguna Beach

Best day trip for discovering the coast.

Laguna Beach is a year-round retreat for art lovers and nature enthusiasts. Its seven miles of coastline is filled with hidden beaches and coves that invite you to explore tide pools and sea caves. Heisler Park is perched on a hilltop overlooking the ocean, and it offers a perfect vantage point for photos and people watching. Just a block away is the Laguna Art Museum , and its rotating exhibitions of work by contemporary California artists. Enjoy a vegetarian meal at Zinc Cafe & Market , a fixture among locals and a popular brunch spot.

During the summer you’ll have your pick of art festivals: the Festival of Arts  (featuring the world-renowned Pageant of the Masters ), the Sawdust Art Festival , Art-A-Fair and more. Venture a bit further down Pacific Coast Highway to encounter the HIP District and the historic Old Pottery Place shopping center. Anchoring the complex is Laguna Beach Books , the county’s last remaining independent bookstore. Browse the carefully curated inventory for a beach read, or ask the always-willing staff for a recommendation. 

How to get to Laguna Beach : Driving time to Laguna Beach from Palm Springs is just under two hours, and the best way to get there is to head west via the I-10 to CA-60 to CA-91 to CA-241 south to CA-133 south. CA-133 will turn into Laguna Canyon Road once you get into Laguna, and it ends right at Main Beach in the heart of town.

Getting Around

Getting around in Palm Springs is a breeze. Whether you’re a visitor exploring the area or a local resident commuting within the city, you’ll find it stress free.

The city is broken up into three main zones.

North Palm Springs which includes the Uptown Design District, the Palm Springs Visitor Center and the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

Downtown Palm Springs includes the highest concentration of retail, hotels, and restaurants. It also includes the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Palm Springs Historical Society, and the new Downtown Park. This is very walkable and encouraged.

South Palm Springs is more residential, but also offers a number of hotels and restaurants. This also includes the Indian Canyons Golf Resort and leads to the entry of Indian Canyons.

While not known by a formal neighborhood name, to the east of downtown is the Palm Springs International Airport and the Palm Springs Air Museum.

Palm Springs Day Trip – Morning

If you haven’t already had breakfast, start your day by charging up and what better place than to grab a custom-brewed latte at the original Koffi , Palm Springs’ hometown coffee go-to on North Palm Canyon Drive. There is a lovely outdoor park in back.

Palm Springs offers a variety of fantastic breakfast spots to kick-start your day. Here are a few popular options:

In the Uptown Design District, Cheeky’s is known for their creative menu and locally sourced ingredients. They offer delicious breakfast dishes like bacon flight, chilaquiles, and lemon ricotta pancakes. However, they don’t take reservations, so get there early.

In South Palm Springs is Elmer’s Restaurant. A beloved Palm Springs institution since 1960, Elmer’s is known for its hearty breakfast offerings, including German pancakes, omelettes, and classic bacon and eggs.

Wilma & Frieda is a popular breakfast spot located in downtown. Menu features a variety of delicious breakfast options made with locally sourced ingredients. From classic favorites like fluffy pancakes and eggs benedict to more unique creations such as their decadent stuffed French toast. They are famous for their house-made pop tarts.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

If you have not been on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway , we highly recommend you find time in the day to experience this #1 attraction. Ascend 8,516 feet aboard the world’s largest rotating tramcar. Enjoy breathtaking views as you glide up to the Mount San Jacinto State Park. Once at the top, take a short hike along one of the park’s many scenic trails, snap some Instagram-worthy photos, or savor a scenic picnic surrounded by nature’s beauty. This once-in-a-lifetime experience promises to leave you awe-inspired and create memories that last a lifetime.

Tip: Stop by the Palm Springs Visitor Center at the base of Tram Road prior to your visit.

Palm Springs Historical Society

Delve into the city’s history at the Palm Springs Historical Society . Located in the heart of downtown, the society’s museum offers fascinating exhibits that showcase the rich heritage and cultural significance of Palm Springs. Learn about the Hollywood stars who once called this place home and discover the city’s iconic midcentury modern architecture. Palm Springs Day Trip – Midday

It has 28 galleries, two sculpture gardens, four classrooms, resource centers, five storage vaults, an 85-seat lecture hall, a 433-seat theater, a 1,000-square-foot museum store. The museum hosts rotating exhibitions and special events, so check their schedule for any ongoing shows.

The Walk of Stars

Look Down. South Palm Canyon Drive doubles as “The Walk of Stars” (like Hollywood Boulevard). You might be walking on Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra or Elizabeth Taylor.

Treat Yourself to Lunch

Treat yourself to a delicious lunch at a local hotspot. Palm Springs boasts a wide range of dining options to suit every palate. Indulge in California cuisine, Mexican flavors, or international fare at one of the many acclaimed restaurants in the city center. Don’t forget to try a refreshing date shake, a local specialty.

Soak up the street life at a sidewalk café. See-and-be-seen hot spots include Lulu California Bistro , serving California casual fare. Try the “Tower of Avocado & Ahi Tuna Tartare.”

At the Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar, try the Nashville Hot Chicken Sliders and a Paloma cocktail. Or lunch from on high.

Watch the action from a second story perch at Bongo Johnny’s Patio Bar & Grill . They specialize in gourmet burgers.

It can be hard to drag yourself away from the pool cabana, the golf course, or your hunt for  that  pink door while in Palm Springs. But if you manage to escape the magnetic pull of those desert destination highlights, there’s a surprising amount of day-trip diversity within a three-hour radius of your resort. Our picks for the best day trips from Palm Springs include beers and beaches, super blooms and supersized sculptures, dark skies in Joshua Tree National Park, and pine-scented air and fresh powder in not one, but two mountain ranges. 

Joshua Tree National Park

Slightly larger than Rhode Island, this park—where two types of desert ecosystems meet and inky night skies expose the Milky Way—is pure magic. If you have even the slightest interest in the outdoors, make time to hike, take pictures, boulder, or meditate in this special place. If you want company, join a Desert Institute class. Cruise to Joshua Tree, the town, or to Yucca Valley when you get hungry, need a healing sound bath , or want to go shopping.

Getting There:  Take CA-62 34 miles to Joshua Tree where the park’s main visitor center is found. 

Travel Tip:   Pioneertown might look familiar to fans of vintage westerns. Built in 1946 by actor Dick Curtis and famous investors like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and the Sons of the Pioneers, more than 50 films and TV shows—including "The Cisco Kid" and "The Gene Autry Show"—were shot at the 32,000-acre “all-inclusive location. Pioneertown had saloons, stables, a main street, a bowling alley, a sound stage, and a restaurant in its heyday. Some of the old structures still stand as decoration; Pappy & Harriet’s has been filling bellies with mesquite barbeque and ears with live music since 1982.

Spanning more than 33,000 acres and with 40 wineries , Temecula is the largest viticultural region in Southern California. Start your day in this hilly wine country with a sunrise flight on a hot air balloon before hitting a bunch of tasting rooms–a good portion of which are found along Rancho California and De Portola Roads— for sips of syrah, sangiovese, sauvignon blanc, or zinfandel. Or get a different vantage point of vineyards on a horseback ride through the region . After working up a sweat horsing around, pull up a chaise or rent a cabana at The Pool at BOTTAIA where you can sip craft cocktails and munch on bistro nibbles while gazing out at the winery’s block.

Getting There:  Temecula is 69 miles from Palm Springs using CA-79, I-215, and I-15. 

Travel Tip:  Grapes aren’t the only things grown around here. You can also have a tour and tasting at Temecula Olive Oil Company ’s ranch, stock up on toiletries made from local lavender at TLC ’s shop in Old Town, or stir up llama drama at The Alpaca Hacienda. 

Borrego Springs

Each spring, more than 200 species of wildflowers and blossoming cacti bloom in the 600,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Humans have also contributed sights, starting with the nomadic Kumeyaay who scrawled petroglyphs and pictographs throughout the park as much as 2,000 years ago. At nearby Galleta Meadows , 130 mammoth steel welded sculptures of prehistoric beasts, legendary creatures, and local wildlife by Ricardo Breceda rise from the ground. Borrego Art Institute sponsors the competitive Plein Air Invitational as well as art workshops and gallery shows. The town has a few bistros and shops worth visiting.

Getting There:  Use I-10 and CA-86 to Salton City and then Borrego Salton Sea Way for 87 miles.

Travel Tip:  If your trip is all about the wildflowers, call the hotline (760-767-4684) to check conditions ahead of time. Just how super the bloom is varies annually and sometime blooms are scarce. When and how many plants show their true colors depends on what combination of rain, sun, temperature, and wind the area received that year. Peak viewing is typically in March.

Once the next big thing in vacation playgrounds, complete with a yacht club, the Salton Sea is California’s largest inland lake. It was accidentally created by recurrent flooding and damaged canals in the early 1900s and is now mostly for the birds ... and bird lovers. The first stop should be the Visitor Center in Mecca where rangers will happily share their favorite spots. One will inevitably be the southern edge’s Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge , which is visited by hundreds of winged species throughout the year. It’s also home to a legion of adorable tiny burrowing owls. The shores are filled with unique volcanic and geological features cased by a magma chamber beneath the sea. Had enough rocks and flocks? The kooky 25,000-item collection at the International Banana Museum might a-peel to you.

Getting There:  Mecca is roughly 49 miles from Palm Springs off CA-111 while the refuge is 90 miles away.

Travel Tip:  On the drive back, go through Indio, the Date Capital of the World, and Coachella, to take in more than two dozen eclectic street murals that started going up in the '90s. The murals are inspired by the valley’s history, agriculture, and indigenous and Latino cultures. Coachella’s contributions, many of which were developed as part of the Coachella Walls project, tend to be edgier and delve further into social and political issues its residents contend with. A driving-and-walking tour can be supplemented with horchata lattes from Sixth Street Coffee and frozen treats from Paleteria Jiquilpan . 

There are plenty of alpine adventures to be had in and around the mountain hamlets of Big Bear and the pristine namesake lake they surround. Sitting at 6,759 feet above sea level, the lake is perfect for swimming, boating, fishing (rainbow trout and bass), canoeing, and parasailing. Conquer winter peaks atop skis, tubes, and snowboards at Snow Summit and Bear Mountainresorts. When the powder melts, turn to hiking, mountain biking (Snow Summit has a lift-served, gravity-fed bike park), golfing, or riding alpine slides/coasters . No matter the time of year, waterside sunset viewing is free and glorious.

Getting There:  It’s nestled in the heart of the San Bernardino National Forest on CA-18 about 82 miles from the Coachella Valley. CA-330 will get you there, but CA-38 is a longer, more scenic route that is often less congested.

Travel Tip:  In the 1940s, Dick and Mac McDonald opened the burger joint that would become the blueprint for today’s chain of 36,000 fast-food franchises in more than 100 countries. An unofficial museum full of memorabilia operates on the San Bernardino site of that first McDonald’s on old Route 66.

Salvation Mountain

Love can move mountains. In the case of this mammoth and colorful example of outsider art, it built one too. For more than three decades, Korean War vet Leonard Knight spread the gospel via a cross-topped 50-foot peak he constructed out of adobe, straw bales, found objects, and donated paint while living in a truck without running water with cats for company. Covered in prayers, “God Is Love” messaging, and hearts, the vibrant hill, cave-like rooms, and makeshift museum of Salvation Mountain are regulars on Instagram and have appeared in Sean Penn’s "Into The Wild." Disciples have kept it up since Knight's death in 2014.

Getting There:  The trip takes about an hour and a half by car. The spirited site is outside Niland in the Imperial Valley.

Travel Tip:  It’s surrounded by Slab City, an off-the-grid community named for the concrete remnants of the abandoned military base. The skate park, stage, library, and other art installations—like the circular murals drawn on old cement water tanks or East Jesus Sculpture Park —can be worth a few extra hours. But stay frosty as some residents are suspicious of visitors or have questionable relationships with the law.

Every sojourn to San Diego should incorporate the four Bs: brews , beaches, Balboa Park , and Baja-style fish tacos. The city has more than 160 breweries while food trucks, mom-and-pop shops, and fine-dining establishments serve up beer-battered fried fish in corn tortillas. The county’s got 70 miles of coastline and there’s a stretch of sand for every type of beachgoer whether they want to play volleyball sans suits, learn to surf, watch seals play, fish, or ride a roller coaster. Balboa Park is a one-stop-shop with the world-famous San Diego Zoo, 16 gardens, a Tony-winning theater, museums of all types, historic artist studios , a tennis club, hiking trails, and a golf course. 

Getting There: Two-and-a-half hours and 126 miles (mostly on I-215 and I-15) are all that stands between you and the good-time quartet.

Travel Tip: If you are cuckoo for cosplay and comics, July’s annual Comic-Con should move to the top of the bucket list. But if nerd nirvana sounds more like the 10th circle of Hell, avoid town at all costs during the convention. Prices go up, everything has line, and places are rented out for private events.

The Oak Glen foothills offer bucolic splendor by the bushel with simple pleasures like hot cider and hayrides, and plenty of u-pick apple ranches including Willowbrook Apple Farm and Los Rios Rancho , where you can load up on winesaps, spitzenbergs, galas, and other heirloom varieties. The season generally runs Labor Day through Thanksgiving.

The fun doesn’t stop with fruit as some farms throw festivals, field dinners, historic reenactments, and workshops while others have pet-able livestock, restaurants, corn mazes, live music, or markets. Some growers add variety to the bounty. Stone Soup Farm has u-pick blackberries and raspberries (August), pumpkins (October), and spring flowers. Stone Pantry Orchard adds pears and pumpkins to the mix while Riley’s cultivates strawberries and mulberries.

Getting There:  Roughly 37 miles away, Oak Glen occupies a 5-mile section of the 20-mile Oak Glen Road scenic loop bookended by Beaumont and Yucaipa. Both cities are on the I-10W.

Travel Tip:  Reward a hard day's work by popping into Snow-Line Orchard to savor their famous mini cider donuts and try their locally-sourced line of hard apple cider and wines.

Idyllwild is a wooded wonderland that experiences all four seasons, including a colorful fall for leaf peepers, despite being only an hour’s drive from the desert. The small community doesn't offer skiing and therefore is less developed and less crowded than Big Bear. That doesn’t mean it completely lacks options for those with heart-pumping hobbies. Located about a mile above sea level, it’s flanked by picturesque mountains and rock formations (Tahquitz Peak, Lily Rock, Mount Atlas, and Suicide Rock) popular with climbers and hikers. In fact, it was here that the now-standard numerical route difficulty grading system was developed. 

Getting There: It’s a 47-mile drive on I-10 W and CA-243.

Travel Tip: Design geeks can hunt for now-collectible knotty pine arts and crafts pieces made by Idyllwild Pinecraft Furniture Company from the 1930s to 1950s. Or do a drive-by of architect Frank Gehry’s first residential project, the still-standing, privately-owned David Cabin .   

Yuma, Arizona

The sunniest city on Earth enjoys 4,000 hours of sunlight a year according to the World Meteorological Society. That, plus its location alongside the mighty Colorado River, makesYuma, Arizona a great place to head outdoors. Off-road on the Imperial Sand Dunes ; Go birding across acres of restored wetlands , many of which used to be an unsightly dump; Hike, bike, picnic, swim, and kayak through an expansive collection of riverfront trails and urban parks. Fans of the macabre can wander the haunted halls and enter a dark cell (if you dare) at the notorious Yuma Territorial Prison . Or you can learn about the culture and meticulous beadwork of the Cocopah tribe at their museum. Stroll the Main Street shops and historic buildings before settling into a meal that uses the fresh ingredients that make Yuma the Winter Vegetable Capital of the World.

Getting There:  To get to Arizona's 11th largest city, head southeast on I-10, CA-86, and I-8. Some of the 168-mile journey straddles the Mexican border.

Travel Tip:  Pre-game by watching both the 1957 and 2007 versions of "3:10 To Yuma" or reading the Elmore Leonard short story both were based on.

Looking for the best day trips from Palm Springs? These are the destinations you need to check out AND how you can get to them.

The gorgeous city of Palm Springs might boast plenty of things to do but, after a few days exploring this desert resort, I guarantee you’ll be itching to venture further. I certainly was on a recent trip.

Not to worry, that’s where my guide to epic Palm Springs day trips comes in.

As it turns out, Palm Springs day trips can vary wildly from desert hikes to picturesque greenery, historical pilgrimages, and even a dose of city slicking if that’s what you’re into. 

So, strap on your comfiest walking shoes and get ready to discover the best day trips from Palm Springs – I’m about to bless you with total travel inspo.

The Best Day Trips From Palm Springs 

Joshua tree national park.

Avid readers will know that I love a good national park to explore. And Joshua Tree National Park has a lot to offer – gorgeous desert flora in the Cholla Cactus Nature Trail, mighty boulders to scramble in Hidden Valley, and that’s before I even mention the many glorious hikes. 

Talking of treks, Skull Rock in Joshua Tree is a popular trail, thanks to its odd (and frankly, slightly creepy) formation. And Ryan Mountain will test the limits of your calves, but it’ll be worth it, I promise. 

The area’s rich history from the Gold Rush era has left reminders dotted here and there in the form of abandoned mines and rusted cars. Why am I still talking? A day trip to Joshua Tree from Palm Springs just goes without saying. 

How to Get There: The MBTA bus 15 travels from Palm Springs Airport to the Yucca Trail & Airway. From there, catch a taxi to Joshua Tree. 

Average journey duration: 1 hour 15 minutes.

Route 66 

Get your kicks on Route 66. This iconic road crossing over eight states is the inspiration behind too many movies and songs. So, naturally, it’s one of the best day trips from Palm Springs. There are plenty of pit stops along the way, including some epic views of the Grand Canyon and Roy’s Motel and Café, where you’ll see vintage cars and artworks. 

You’ll also want to visit the Gemini Giant in Illinois, the Blue Whale in Oklahoma, or the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. 

How to Get There: Take the bus to the San Bernardino Transit Centre, then the train from San Bernardino Downtown Station to Covina Station. Take a taxi the rest of the way. 

Average journey duration: 4 hours.

Amboy Crater 

Sitting pretty in the Mojave Desert is the Amboy Crater. It’s an extinct volcano crater that spans over 43 miles of lava fields and an impressive 3,097 feet above sea level. It became famous as a side attraction when Route 66 opened up, though I think it demands your full attention. 

The crater offers a hike to the bottom in a surreal moonscape of pathways scattered with black volcanic rocks and dried lava lakes. It takes about two to three hours to reach the centre. 

Bring plenty of water with you because it is in the desert, and there aren’t any convenience stores nearby. 

How to Get There: Take the bus from Tahquitz Canyon at Calle Encilia to Mission Lakes at El Mirador, then travel the rest of the way by taxi.  

Average journey duration: 3 hours.

Los Angeles 

The City of Angels beckons — are you going to refuse? There are many incredible things to do in Los Angeles , from exploring hiking trails to embarking on gastronomic adventures or getting sun-kissed on sandy beaches. 

The Hollywood sign is a big attraction, as is the Hollywood Walk of Fame. If drinking is what you desire, head for West Hollywood for the trendy bars, or shop ‘til you drop at Rodeo Drive. 

How to Get There: Take the bus from Palm Springs Downtown to Los Angeles Downtown. 

Average journey duration: 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Idyllwild 

There might be plenty of deserts to pick from around Palm Springs, but Idyllwild offers a lush mountainous escape in the San Jacinto Mountains. Stop here for year-round hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, and mountain biking.

You can also enjoy the ambiance of its communities like Fern Valley and Pine Cove, which are home to some of the top artistic communities and even the Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines Festival.  

How to Get There: You’ll have to take a taxi to visit this location. 

Average journey duration: 1 hour.

Santa Monica 

Dreaming of a beach escape? The Santa Monica Pier is one of the biggest attractions, with seagulls and street artists galore along the boardwalk.

Here you can rent bikes and enjoy a refreshing ride to Venice Beach and its colourful streets and small shops, or stick around and visit the amusement park. 

Third Street Promenade is probably my favourite breakfast spot (touristy, I know – but it’s a goodun’) and is conveniently near the Pier, so it’s the best place to head to first on your day trip. 

How to Get There: Take the bus from Palm Springs Downtown to Los Angeles Downtown. Then take the train from Union Station to Downtown Santa Monica Station. 

Average journey duration: 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Pioneertown 

Prepare to step into an old western movie. One of the more unique trips from Palm Springs, a day in Pioneertown will have you humming Old West tunes. 

Designed around the concept of an 1870s frontier town, it resembles a movie set with its old-fashioned constructions. To improve the authenticity of the experience, there’s no cellphone signal. 

But there are plenty of traditional homes and ranches to keep you distracted from your lack of Wi-Fi. Stop by Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace for a hearty BBQ, then enjoy a pleasant hike up the Pioneer Mountain Preserve. It’s a charming slip-into-the-past experience if you’re in the mood for a digital detox and a day away from modern life. 

How to Get There: Take the bus from Tahquitz Canyon at Calle Encilia to Mission Lakes at El Mirador, then travel by taxi to Pioneertown. 

Average journey duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Whitewater Preserve

Next up is an epic day trip… And an easy one, too. The San Bernardino Mountains are home to the Whitewater Preserve, where a sparkling perennial river flows through a desert canyon. 

The waters are emerald, and the wildlife is immense: bighorn sheep, bears, deer, and bobcats are just some animals you can catch a glimpse of.

Fellow trekheads will be glad to know that hiking trails are aplenty too – the Whitewater Canyon View Loop Trail is a favourite, as is the Rainbow Rock Canyon. 

How to Get There: You can take a taxi to this location. 

Average journey duration: 30 minutes.

San Diego 

It might be a little further out, but getting up early and choosing San Diego as your day trip from Palm Springs won’t disappoint you. 

There are beaches to laze on – Coronado Beach is a sandy beauty, and Flat Rock Beach takes the cake for orange-hued bluffs – and parks to visit: Queen Calafia’s Magic Circle is a whimsical installation, and the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park holds many archaeological treasures. 

San Diego is a hub for arts and culture, from live music events to performing arts centres and museums. Anyone looking to soak up culture will enjoy a day trip here.

How to Get There: Take the bus from Amtrak Bus Stop to San Diego Sante Fe Depot.

Coachella Valley Preserve 

Pack a picnic and enjoy Coachella Valley Preserve, one of the most beautiful places to visit near Palm Springs. It’s a 45-mile desert valley traversed by the infamous San Andreas Fault, where you’ll find the beautiful Chocolate Mountains. 

The Coachella Walls showcase stellar murals by local artists, and there are two casinos in the valley for risk-takers to enjoy. 

Hiking, horseback riding, and golfing (there are over 125 golf courses here) are all fantastic options, but the area is primarily known for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April. 

How to Get There: Take the bus from N Palm Canyon at Chino to 5th at Vine.

Salton Sea 

Alright, I’ll admit that it’s not the most glamorous of places, but Salton Sea has its own charms. Especially for those who love a good ghost town. 

Take a trip down the road to Bombay Beach to view some unique graffiti, illustrations, and other works of art. The Sole Tree and Salvation Mountain are two of the most popular installations. 

There’s also a visitor centre where you can learn the history of this once-bustling town and a museum showcasing the local ecology. It’s a pretty relaxed place to visit, so enjoy the zen vibe. 

How to Get There: Take the line 8 bus from N Palm Canyon at Chino to 66th Mecca Family HC, then a taxi to Salton Sea Beach. 

Indian Canyons 

If natural beauty is what you seek, Indian Canyons has it in bucket loads. 

Located on the Cahuilla Tribal Lands, the area offers a variety of scenic views that hikers will fawn over (myself included). Hike up to the magical 60-foot waterfall, or take to the Palm Canyon trail to see some of the exotic flora and fauna up close. 

The canyons have much to offer, with Murray Canyon being the home of endangered animal species and the Andreas Canyon giving life to more than 150 plant types. You might even glimpse the elusive Bighorn sheep as you explore… But don’t take my word for it. 

Don’t forget to stop by the tribal museum for some fascinating history on the canyons. 

How to Get There: You can take a taxi to the location.

Average journey duration: 15 minutes.  

Old Town La Quinta 

For something a little bit different, retail therapy and a desert paradise combine in Old Town La Quinta. With more than 30 salons and retail outlets, this idyllic small town will drain your wallet but leave you smiling. 

Eateries, hand-crafted jewellery stores, candlemakers: you name it, they have it. You can even go wine tasting or simply people-watch in this gorgeous locale in the Santa Rosa Mountains.

Julian 

Next up is a little gem. It might be a tiny town nestled in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains, but Julian is brimming with beauty and life. 

It was originally a gold mining boomtown in the mid-to-late 19th century, so there’s an abundance of preserved buildings in the Designated Historic District to peruse.

If you’re there in October, get ready for the Apple Festival with all the apple pies you could ever want. There’s also a Music at the Marketplace series in autumn, a Vintage Cookbook Fair, and a Fat Tire Bike Festival, to name a few more fun events. 

How to Get There: Take the bus from Palm Springs Downtown to Los Angeles Downtown. Take another bus to College Avenue, El Cajon Transit Centre, and Washington St & Hwy 78. If possible, take a taxi as it’s much faster.

Salvation Mountain

It doesn’t get more unique than Salvation Mountain. It’s a work of art made from straw, adobe, and lead-free paint on a hillside by Leonard Knight and features Biblical imagery, verses, and platitudes. 

The Folk Art City of America declared it an important site for folk art, and The Salvation Mountain, Inc NPO keeps it in pristine condition.

It makes for a colourful experience to explore and examine the pieces up close. Even if you’re not particularly religious, it’s a fascinating view into the artist’s heart and will create some fun holiday snapshots.  

How to Get There: Take the bus from N Palm Canyon at Chino to 5th on Vine and then 66th at Mecca Family HC and finally, Club Views at Windlass. From there you’ll have to take a taxi.

The Palm Springs to San Diego drive time is considerably higher than the previous destinations’, but it’s definitely worth it. San Diego sits on the Pacific coast , and besides the gorgeous beaches, it has a lot more to offer its visitors. 

When in San Diego you can’t miss the Old Town area and the largest urban park in the US, Balboa Park . At the park you’ll find museums, over 20 gardens, natural vegetation zones, and theaters, so you’re likely to spend a whole afternoon wandering in there. 

Among the fabulous activities you can enjoy in San Diego, these are two of the best. 

➤ Take a San Diego Harbor Cruise to enjoy a narrated tour as you relax and appreciate the city’s skyline from the water. You’ll cruise under Coronado Bridge and spot the US Naval fleet, as well as some sea lions. Venice Beach & Santa Monica

Distance from Palm Springs : 121 miles / 195 km. Approximately 2 hours driving time. 

One of the best road trips from Palm Springs is toward Venice Beach & Santa Monica , two gorgeous neighborhoods located in West LA that face the Pacific Ocean. 

Walking from Venice Beach to Santa Monica (or the other way around) is probably the best way to explore both areas, as you’ll pass by all the highlights and enjoy what they have to offer . 

Regardless of how you visit, however, there are some spots you absolutely cannot miss. These include Santa Monica’s Pier , Venice Boardwalk , Muscle Beach, and the Venice Canals , built in the 1900s to emulate Venice, Italy. Sunbathing at the beach while sipping cocktails and going for brunch are some of the most popular activities in the area. You wouldn’t want to skip that, would you?

A stroll along the colorful Abbot Kinney Blvd is also highly recommended. If you enjoy shopping, you’ll never want to leave Third Street Promenade . It’s an open-air shopping mall with countless stores at affordable prices, movie theaters, and other entertainment options. 

Downtown LA & Hollywood

Distance from Palm Springs : 107 miles / 172 km. Approximately 1 hour 40 minutes driving time. 

Los Angeles is a must-visit if you’re in the area Heading to Downtown LA and Hollywood, therefore, is one of the best things to do around Palm Springs . 

Downtown LA is the perfect destination if you enjoy walking around, as you’ll be able to enjoy its glorious landmarks on foot. These include Walt Disney Concert Hall , Little Tokyo , Bradbury Building, and Angels Flight Railway , no less!

Then there’s Hollywood, which doesn’t need an introduction . From the iconic sign to the Dolby Theater or Hollywood Walk of Fame, all of its landmarks are worldwide known. Go shopping at Rodeo Drive , spot celebrities in Beverly Hills, and visit the movie studios to enjoy the full experience of being in Hollywood.

Big Bear Lake

Distance from Palm Springs : 82 miles / 132 km. Approximately 1 hour 40 minutes driving time. 

If you’re longing for a day in nature, Big Bear Lake is the perfect day trip from Palm Springs . This small city sits on the banks of the beautiful Big Bear Lake. Surrounded by woods, it’s the perfect place for hiking, swimming, and enjoying scenic views.

If you visit in winter, snowboarding and skiing are must-do’s! You’ll also find plenty of shops and restaurants in the area, which means you won’t be getting completely off the grid. There are loads of things to do in Big Bear Lake , despite it being small!

If you’re a foodie, you’ll be glad to know that Grizzly Manor Cafe , Mountain Munchies , Royal Thai Cafe, and Big Bear Lake Brewing Company offer astounding dishes and beer! 

➤ For some outdoor adrenaline, go on the Zipline Tour that offers 9 different high-speed ziplines and a thrilling suspension bridge. You’ll glide among the trees with excellent views of Johnson Valley, and enjoy the most adventurous day. In this tour, you’ll follow your guide through a gorgeous hiking trail all the way to a beautiful scenic lake viewpoint. Painted Canyon

Distance from Palm Springs : 17 miles / 27 km. Approximately 35 minutes driving time. 

Painted Canyon is another hikers’ paradise . Located in Mecca, the 5-mile loop trail is the highlight of the area, surrounded by enormous eroded rocks, some of which are over 600 million years old.

The hiking difficulty is moderate, so you have to be in good physical condition to try it. If you’re up for it, you can choose between The Painted Canyon hike or The Ladder Canyon hike. 

Birdwatching is also a great activity that can be enjoyed here if you’re not hiking. The colorful rock walls, painted by the minerals, are another wonder to look at! You can enjoy a picnic amongst them, and drive around to enjoy the fantastic views.  

Distance from Palm Springs to Pasadena : 106 miles / 171 km. Approximately 1 hour 40 minutes driving time. 

Internationally known for its Rose Parades and Tournament of Roses , Pasadena is a great place to visit near Palm Springs. 

Old Town Pasadena is full of shops and restaurants, and you shouldn’t miss Colorado Bvd and Paseo Outdoor Shopping Mall , the best places to visit in Downtown Pasadena.

Every first week of the month there is a Rose Parade ; if you can manage to visit Pasadena during that time you’ll enjoy it in full bloom. The very best time to visit, however, is for the New Year’s parade that takes place on January 1st and that marks the start of the Rose Bowl Game. 

You should also visit the Rose Bowl Stadium , which is the 50th largest stadium in the world. The Norton Simon Museum and the Pacific Asian Museum are also highly recommended. To marvel at thousands of California native plants, there’s no place like Arlington Gardens . See? There are loads to do in Pasadena!

You can end your trip by enjoying a hike at the Eaton Canyon . It is only a 3.5-mile roundtrip hike with great waterfalls and nature. 

Distance from Palm Springs : 95 miles / 153 km. Approximately 1.5 hours driving time. 

They say Disneyland should be visited (at least!) once in a lifetime, don’t they? Then grab your comfy shoes because you’ll be doing a lot of running around in this magnificent park that instantly turns people of all ages into children again. 

Disneyland is an all-time classic destination for families and groups of friends (and solo travelers, and couples…) and it’s definitely worth the drive from Palm Springs. Whether you’re a Star Wars fan, watched all the Avengers’ movies in order, or have ever enjoyed a good Pixar movie, you’ll find your favorite Disney theme at the park and enjoy all the others. 

Countless rides, shows, parades, and events will keep you entertained all day, and you’ll also find many restaurants on-site (some of them themed!) to refuel your energies. 

Opening Hours : Daily from 8 AM to 10 PM, although on mid-week days during the off-season it may close earlier. 

Castaic Lake

Distance from Palm Springs : 148 miles / 238 km. Approximately 2 hours 40 minutes driving time. 

If you enjoy fishing, swimming, and spending time outdoors, then you’ll enjoy the day trip to Castaic Lake . 

Castaic lake is the largest water reservoir in Southern California , and it covers 11,200 acres of parkland.  You have to pay an entrance fee to access it, which is around 12 dollars at the time of writing. This will enable you to swim at the beach, use the BBQ facilities, use the camping site, and access the boat rentals.

If you own a kayak you’re allowed to take it out on the lake , or you could even bring your camping gear and stay for the night. 

Hiking, horseback riding, and jet-skiing are other activities you may enjoy during your time here. 

Newport Beach

Distance from Palm Springs : 102 miles / 164 km. Approximately 1 hour 40 minutes driving time.  

Are you a beach person? Then there’s yet another destination you may be interested in. The coastal city of Newport Beach offers magnificent beaches , and it’s best known for its long harbor and the amusement park facing the ocean. 

Some of the world’s largest whales come near the Newport shores for a splash . If you’re lucky you may spot the grey whales during the winter months, and blue whales in the summer!

➤ To increase those chances, go on a Whale-Watching Cruise from Newport Beach to see these glorious animals up close. You may also get to see dolphins and other marine animals while you cruise listening to your guide’s insights on the native California marine life. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

After meeting the whales and spending some time laying under the sun or practicing water sports, you can go shopping at Lido Marina Village , visit Balboa Island or head to Sherman Library & Gardens for some botanical exploration.

Palm Springs is nestled between imposing mountains and vibrant palm trees deep in the desert. It’s long been the vacation destination of choice for Hollywood stars seeking an LA getaway.

Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra are just some of the big names that visited Palm Springs and made it onto the city’s Walk of Stars.

But it’s not just the city itself that allures visitors. Palm Springs is a short drive away from inactive volcano craters, relaxing hot springs, and even wineries.

Day trips from Palm Springs are varied and fun!

Here are 12 of the best day trips from Palm Springs .

1.  Joshua Tree National Park

As you might have guessed from the park’s name, this National Park is known for its Joshua Trees. These unique trees only grow at certain elevations and with the right conditions.

Hikers will love the Hidden Valley trail, and astronomers will be delighted to hear that the park is one of America’s top Dark Skies sites, so the star gazing is out of this world!

The park is great for landscape photography too with miles of intriguing sites from giant boulders to the amazing cholla cactus garden you’ll have no shortage of stunning photo ops.

2.  Anza-Borrego State Park

The Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a vast and barren desert landscape and it’s the largest state park in California.

It boasts dozens of hiking trails suitable for all experience levels and lots of fun desert adventures, from off-roading through the desert to star gazing.

One trail worth walking is the Borrego Palm Canyon Trail. And in the heart of the park visit the town of Borrego Springs.

Make sure you don’t leave without driving along the Borrego Springs Road and spotting as many of the Galleta Meadows Metal Sculptures as you can – there are over 130!

3.  Salton Sea

Take a drive to the Salton Sea, one of the most unique experiences in California.

This curious lake at the northwestern tip of the Sonoran Desert has a somewhat apocalyptic feel to it.

Shallow and vast, the lake was created completely by accident when an engineering mishap led to the Colorado River flooding over.

What was left? A desert oasis. Once a luxury destination, the Salton Sea is now a quiet and tranquil place with a surreal vibe.

Birders and nature lovers will also want to visit the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge.

Bring your zoon lens and binoculars to best view the wide range of bird species here. There is an excellent chance you will see burrowing owls here!

4.  Amboy Crater

Amboy Crater is just off Route 66, though the landscape is otherworldly.

To get into this ancient volcanic crater you’re looking at a good two or three hours of walking, but the effort is worth it.

Wind your way past chunks of singed rock and over dried lava as you climb up to the volcano’s crater.

Bring water and snacks – there’s no shops inside the volcano :)

5.  Los Angeles

LA is one of the most famous cities in the country, and it’s just two hours’ drive from Palm Springs.

You can hike to the famous Hollywood sign (it’s on our list of famous California landmarks ), visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and go shopping on Rodeo Drive.

Other cool options in Los Angeles include Griffith Observatory, Getty Museum, and La Brea Tar Pits.

For some great people watching head over to Venice Beach and walk the famous oceanfront boardwalk.

Also check out the giant mural Luminaries of Pantheism (on S Venice Blvd) and visit the Venice Canals. Although not quite (not at ALL!!!) the same as the Venice Italy canals, still worth a visit.

For a relaxing day trip from Palm Springs head over to Desert Hot Springs to enjoy the pools and spas. You won’t regret it!

You can buy a day pass at several resorts including, The Good House, El Morocco Inn & Spa, and Azure Palm Hot Springs Resort & Day Spa Oasis.

You’ll go back to Palm Springs feeling totally revitalized.

7.  San Diego

Looking for a day at a lively coastal city? Come and explore the museums, browse the art galleries, and dine at exquisite seafood restaurants in San Diego.

If you’re looking to escape to the coast, then head straight for San Diego’s beaches. Enjoy the soft white sand at Coronado Beach.

Want to try surfing? San Diego has some great beaches for beginner surfers like Oceanside and Mission Beach.

Take a drive down the legendary Route 66 highway, also known as the Mother Road.

Along the way, stop off at top attractions like the Amboy Crater, the Bagdad Café, Barstow Route 66 Mother Road Museum, the Bottle Tree Ranch, and the California Route 66 Museum.

Drive a short stretch or continue all the way to Los Angeles!

From PS it takes about an hour to get to Route 66 – it’s one of the most iconic Palm Springs day trips!

9.  Temecula Wineries

The Temecula Valley in California isn’t as famous as Napa Valley, but it’s just as scenic. The best way to explore the region’s wineries is on a wine tasting tour (or two).

You’ll be pleased to know that there are more than 50 varieties of wine to sample and over 35 wineries you can visit.

Most of the wine tasting tours visit more than one winery and cover your transport, wine samples, and even lunch.

Alternatively, you can rent a bike and explore the wineries in your own time.

The perfect glass of wine is just over an hour’s drive from Palm Springs!

Visit wine country in beautiful Temecula – in less than 1.5 hours from Palm Springs

10.  Idyllwild

This little town in the San Jacinto Mountains is the perfect day trip for those of you wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a while.

Spend some time at Lake Fulmor and walk around the lake.

Visiting on the weekend? Grab brunch at Café Aroma and then hit the trails.

The best way to explore the area is on foot, so check out some of the best hiking trails in the area and enjoy time outdoors.

Take the Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail for a fairly easy 5-mile hike featuring scenic views, plenty of shaded areas, and you can bring your dogs on the trail.

Another more challenging trail is the Deer Springs Trail that passes by Suicide Rock where you can enjoy the beautiful views from atop the rock.

11.  Mount San Jacinto State Park

There are many options for exploring Mount San Jacinto State Park.

You can get the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to 8,500 feet, take on the challenge of hiking to the San Jacinto Peak that stands at 10,834 feet, or go on a short stroll through the mountainous landscape.

Not in the mood to hike? No problem, enjoy the views while dining at the Pines Café, Peaks Restaurant, or grab a drink and appetizers at the Lookout Lounge.

Whatever you decide to do, there will be scenic views! Conveniently, the park is just an hour’s drive from Palm Springs.

Mt San Jacinto is one of the coolest day trips from Palm Springs – literally it’s around 20 – 30 degrees cooler than PS!

12.  Coachella Valley Preserve

Less than half an hour’s drive from Palm Springs and you’re in the Coachella Valley Preserve in the Indio Hills!

Get your boots on and visit the preserve’s stunning desert palm oasis, like the exceptional Thousand Palm Oasis.

Keep a look out for local wildlife, like the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard!

It is a place I visit several times each year, and it never gets old.

The bright sun never seems to stop shining in the often-cloudless sky. The palm-lined boulevards, the plentiful spas, and the spectacular hikes are just the beginning.

There are so just so many things to do in Palm Springs for new and experienced visitors alike! I highly recommend the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for a birds eye view of the town. And, the many desert hiking trails surrounding the town.

However, for anyone interested in exploring beyond the city limits, there are tons of great day trips from Palm Springs, California to experience. In this blog post, I will share my top day trip recommendations that will satisfy your thirst for adventure.

Here I will list out the best day trips from Palm Springs. They range from under two hours up to about four hours maximum. Whether you want to stay close to Palm Springs or venture out further, I have something here for you.

The following day trips from Palm Springs can be reached in two hours or less by car. These are great options for those who are short on time, or for anyone planning a road trip alone .

Let’s dive into the best Palm Springs day trips below!

1. Indian Canyons

Time from Palm Springs: 10 mins

Can’t Miss: The Andreas Canon Trail and the Palm Canyon Trail

While Indian Canyons is technically inside of the city limits, it is also one of the best Palm Springs day trips around. Only ten minutes from downtown, this stretch of land is an easy place to spend a full day exploring.

This private and is a natural oasis in the desert. The property is covered in lush palm trees, trickling streams, and scenic hiking trails. 

The canyons were once home to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, and you can still see remnants of their lifestyle around the grounds.

When visiting, you’ll have several trails to choose from. My all time favorite is the Andreas Canyon Trail . It has the best little grove of California fan palms and a great view from the cliffs if you hike.

My second favorite trail is the Palm Canyon Trail , which has a larger palm grove and a flowing stream.

Pro Tip: Consider booking the Indian Canyons Bike and Hike Tour . On this half-day excursion, you’ll go on a 10 mile ride through the scenic desert as you learn about the history and surroundings. This moderately challenging tour will include transportation, bikes, snacks, and more. BOOK YOUR INDIAN CANYONS BIKE AND HIKE HERE!

Be sure to start your day early, as many of the hikes have no shade. It can get very hot here. But, as one of the easiest day trips from Palm Springs, you really can’t miss this one!

2. The Coachella Valley Preserve

Time from Palm Springs: 30 mins

Can’t Miss: Thousand Palms Oasis

Rolling dunes and rugged peaks are set in the expansive Coachella Valley Preserve System. This 20,000-acre sanctuary is covered in multiple palm oases formed due to the San Andreas Fault lines.

The spectacular Thousand Palms Oasis includes a mile-long trail that winds past sparkling pools. And, this Preserve is not only home to spectacular views but also several rare species of wildlife.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Coachella round-tailed ground squirrel and the flat-tailed horned lizard.

3. Joshua Tree National Park

Time from Palm Springs: 50 mins

Can’t Miss: Beautiful Joshua Tree sunrise spots and the famous Arch Rock

Joshua Tree National Park is probably the most popular of all day trips from Palm Springs, and for good reason. It is a visually stunning national park near Los Angeles , San Diego, and most SoCal towns.

This unique park truly feels like another planet. The spiky plant life, the panoramic views, and the huge, random boulders make this place unreal. And, if you visit before the crowds come in, it is so peaceful here.

This park receives around 2.5 million visitors every year. It will take just under one our to reach the closest entry from Palm Springs. This park is not to be missed!

4. Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park

Can’t Miss: The lake, camping overnight

Roughly 45 minutes outside of downtown Palm Springs, the Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park is a local gem!

Families can enjoy fishing in the large, picturesque blue lake situated at the base of the mountains. Travelers can also enjoy camping here on the east side of the lake, if you decide to make it an overnight trip.

And, photographers (like me!) will have a field day snapping pictures of the gorgeous blue water and mountainous backdrop. This was a very fun spot for me to explore, especially because I’ve been to most desert regions in Southern California before – but this one was new to me.

With a low $6 entrance fee, this is a cheap and beautiful spot to spend a day.

5. Pioneertown

Can’t Miss: The wild west photo ops

Pioneertown was built as sort of a “live movie set” village, designed as an 1870’s frontier town. It has been home to over 50 movies and TV shows in the 1940s and 50s, but as the golden age of western films died down, so did the film production.

Nowadays Pioneertown has become a fun tourist spot worthy of a visit. There are ample photo ops around town and you will definitely feel like you are in the true old Wild West.

Pro Tip: Pioneertown may be touristy, but it is super fun to take photos around the Wild West town! Be sure to bring a great camera to capture your memories.

6. Idyllwild Pine Cove

Can’t Miss: Hiking or biking in the mountains

Possibly one of the least well-known day trips from Palm Springs, Idyllwild Pine Cove is a beautiful and relaxed spot. it is a stark contrast to the desert!

Blanketed in green with a backdrop of mountains, this pine-tree studded area is a fun outdoor getaway for anyone active outdoors. Hiking, biking and fishing are all popular things to do here.

Pro Tip: If you are taking part in any of these activities, be sure to pack a tiny first aid kit . The terrain is vast and spread out, so you want to come well prepared.

At nighttime, visitors can enjoy live music from local bands or explore the quaint shopping areas. At just one hour from Palm Springs, this is one of the best day trips you could choose!

7. The Salton Sea

Time from Palm Springs: 1.25 hours

Can’t Miss: Bombay Beach sculptures

The Salton Sea is one of those California oddities that I encourage everyone to explore at least once.

This shallow, landlocked body of water has a high saline and sulfur content that has rendered it practically a ghost town. Located across both Riverside and Imperial counties, this lake sits on the San Andreas Fault line.

The landscape is cracked and rugged, and the area feels pretty barren, except for the few fishermen I’ve seen here from time to time.

Drive through the art-covered colony of Bombay Beach for a very “Burning Man” type of vibe. The small dwellings and old-time billboards feel apocalyptic and unreal!

Check out the visitors center for a fascinating history of what this area was meant to be. Just over an hour from Palm Springs, this is a fun and strange day trip for those who like abandoned areas.

8. Anza Borrego State Park

Time from Palm Springs: 1.5 hours

Can’t Miss: Hiking the Slot and the amazing Borrego Palm Canyon Trail

Another of my favorite desert locales, Anza Borrego Desert State Park is the largest state park in the contiguous United States – and an absolute must-see!

The endless badlands and rugged landscape is utterly awe-inspiring.

If you like hiking through picturesque landscapes, this is your spot. From mountains to flat desert to badlands, Anza Borrego has so many cool lookout points and hiking trails.

My favorite trail is hands-down  The Slot , but I am also a big fan of the  Borrego Palm Canyon Trail , too. This massive park is great for a self-driving tour, as well, if hiking is not on your radar.

Another claim to fame – Anza Borrego was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2018, so it is the perfect spot for stargazing. On a clear night, you will see an endless expanse of stars across the night sky!

Anza Borrego is only 1.25 hours from Palm Springs, so it’s an awesome road trip option that I highly recommend. Check out my Anza Borrego guide to plan the perfect trip.

9. Borrego Springs

Can’t Miss: The  sculptures in Galleta Meadows and a rustic  wild west themed hotel .

Borrego Springs is a quirky desert town you can reach in just a 1.5 hour road trip from Palm Springs.

I would describe Borrego Springs as a true Wild West town. It is rugged, out of the way, and has a lot of rustic mom and pop hotels and shops all around the small town.

Don’t miss the large  metal sculptures in Galleta meadows . You’ll find giant horses, prehistoric dinosaurs, elephants, and more. They are all scattered haphazardly throughout the vast desert meadows.

You’ll have easy access to  Anza Borrego  from here, since the town of  Borrego Springs  sits dead center in the park.

10. Salvation Mountain

Can’t Miss: the quirky folk art

Salvation Mountain is a folk art installation located in Imperial County, California. It was created by the late Leonard Knight. I have visited it multiple times in the past and recently took a friend there for her first visit. She found it to be very unusual and interesting!

The mountain measures 50 feet in height and spans 150 feet in width. It consists of a maze of colorful paint and has gained recognition as an iconic landmark in the California desert.

Knight devoted his life to creating Salvation Mountain as a monument to his faith in God. He dedicated over 30 years to its construction before his passing. It is open for free visits, and donations are accepted for maintenance purposes.

Salvation Mountain is a must see roadside attraction in the California desert!

11. Temecula

Can’t Miss: Old Town Temecula, Oak Creek Winery

If you are a wine enthusiast, then this will be one of the most interesting day trips from Palm Springs for you!

Temecula enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate, which makes it suitable for the growth of grapes in over 40 wineries’ vineyards. Among the well-regarded wineries in Temecula are Oak Mountain Winery, Bella Vista, and Hart Winery.

Temecula Valley Wine Country also hosts several events each year, including harvest celebrations, concerts, and food festivals, which are all a blast.

12. Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch

Can’t Miss: The glass bottle sculptures

Looking for a more quirky day trip from Palm Springs? If you liked the sound of Salvation Mountain, you’ll probably be into this one, too.

Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch is a roadside attraction off of Route 66.It is an endless, colorful display of hundreds of bright glass bottles and metal sculptures covering the ground. 

The collection at the ranch was created by Elmer Long, a local who started collecting glass bottles and vintage signs in his youth.

Over time, his collection grew, leading him to display his finds and create sculptures and art installations along the road in front of his home. Visitors can explore the ranch to view the diverse craftsmanship of each piece and take photographs of this unique property.

13. Big Bear

Time from Palm Springs: 1.75 hours

Can’t Miss: Snow activities, hiking trails.

Big Bear is a small lakeside city in Southern California best known for winter activities like skiing and snowboarding.

From November through February, Big Bear might be the most drastic change from the desert lifestyle that you can get, and within a short and reasonable drive.

When the snow melts, plan to hike the San Bernardino National Forest for miles of trails in the mountains. In the summer, you’ll see more green than you’re used to in the desert. In the fall, it will be a rainbow of color.

Big Bear is roughly a 1.75 hours day trip from Palm Springs, making it one of the easiest yet most drastically different landscapes on this list.

14. Laguna Beach

Can’t Miss: The Pirate Tower and the Laguna Art Museum

Laguna beach is a gorgeous coastal town in Orange County, reachable in under two hours for a Palm Springs road trip. If you love picturesque sunsets on the beach, Laguna Beach is a great place to spend day trip from Palm Springs.

Visit the Insta-famous Victoria Beach Pirate Tower, a unique castle-like structure from the 1920s that was originally built as a private staircase to the beach. Take a picture in front of the tower, and if you’re feeling adventurous, explore the rocks nearby.

15. Mojave National Preserve

Time from Palm Springs: 2 hours

Can’t Miss: The Kelso Dunes, and the Rings Loop Trail

Mojave National Preserve sprawls across 1.6 million acres of the desert, so you can easily spend a full day exploring the land!

Climb the soft sand at Kelso Dunes and explore the underground tunnels in the Lava Tube. Check out the Rings Loop Trail, one of the best hikes in Southern California . And, check out the scenic landscape covered in Joshua Trees as you drive through the acreage.

The Mojave National Preserve does offer camping, so if time allows you could consider staying overnight.

16. Los Angeles

Can’t Miss: Art museums, the Hollywood Sign

The most well-known big city in SoCal is one of the best day trips from Palm Springs! If you’d prefer a city-break over more nature, then you might consider this day trip.

If you are in the mood for visual art, you have an endless supply of museums and galleries within the city limits. Visit LACMA or The Broad for thought-provoking art exhibitions, or the Getty to learn a bit about history. Or, head to the Broad Stage for performing arts.

Next, take a scenic trail up to see the Hollywood sign on one of the best hiking trails in Southern California .

Finally, head to the Santa Monica Promenade for delicious eats and window shopping. Check out Venice Beach or head to the Fashion District for cheap and one of a kind clothing items.

The sunny beaches, the plentiful parks and the pleasantly warm and sunny weather all year round can’t be beat. This is a great day trip from Palm Springs if you’re looing for a laid back city with lots of beautiful outdoor sights.

Check out Balboa Park for highlights like the San Diego Zoo and interesting art studios. Head to the Gaslamp Quarter for dinner and nightlife. Check out the hiking trails at Torrey Pines . Or, head to the La Jolla Cove for some ocean wildlife viewing.

Pro Tip: To hit all the sights, start with an early hike at Torrey Pines. Next, hit Balboa Park for the museums or sights of your choice. Later, grab a meal in the Gaslamp Quarter.

18. Carlsbad

Can’t Miss: The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

If you are reading this in the springtime, then I highly recommend checking out the coastal town of Carlsbad. And, most notably, the vibrant flower fields that bring thousands of visitors each spring.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are open from March to May each year. During this time frame, endless fields of bright, colorful ranunculus bloom across the property.

Though not exactly a “natural” attraction, these flower fields are a feat of brilliance for the eyes. Take loads of pictures, ride a tractor, visit the butterfly garden, and mre.

The Best Day Trips from Palm Springs: 3 Hours or More

The following day trips from Palm Springs will require a bit more of a drive. But, if you have a friend or a group going along with you, it should be easy to make by taking turns driving!

Time from Palm Springs: 3 hours

Can’t Miss: El Matador State Beach and the Leo Carrillo trails

An essential spot for any California traveler , Malibu is a great day trip option from Palm Springs. – especially if you are in the mood for the ocean after all of that desert!

In even a short Malibu day trip , you can see quite a lot.

Visit the gorgeous  El Matador State Beach if you want to see the most epic cliffs above the sandy ocean. At sunset, you’ll have some of the prettiest view in SoCal.

If you want to go hiking, check out the wild Leo Carrillo State Park’s trails. The hikes generally meander up the mountain side, and give panoramic ocean views at the highest points.

20. Lake Havasu City

Can’t Miss: The London Bridge and water sports

This western Arizona town is a great getaway for those willing to cross state lines. Lake Havasu is one of the closest beaches to Phoenix , so you will see a lot of Arizona natives here, too.

Lake Havasu City might be a small city in the desert, but it is mostly known for its beaches and water sports on Lake Havasu itself. This is where you want to come for boating, water-skiing, and and relaxing.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget a foldable quick dry towel for use on the lake! It won’t trap sand or stay wet like typical beach towels do. And, it folds down super small in your bags. Get your quick dry towel here!

Interestingly, the London Bridge was relocated from England to here, and now links the mainland to a small island. Visitors can also explore the Lake Havasu Museum of History for an indoor escape or enjoy Lake Havasu State Park for picnics, mountain views, and bird-watching.

Lake Havasu City is one of the most unique day trips from Palm Springs, and a great choice!

21. Phoenix

Time from Palm Springs: 4 hours

Can’t Miss: Hole in the Rock hike , Roosevelt Row, and the saguaro cactus around Phoenix

If you’re willing to drive a bit further into Arizona, spending one day in Phoenix makes for an excellent day trip from Palm Springs!

Explore the many desert parks around Phoenix, such as South Mountain Park and Papago Park. See the tall saguaro cactus in Phoenix ‘s downtown and city outskirts.

Papago Park is home to one of the best hikes in Phoenix, the Hole in the Rock hike. And, the Desert Botanical Garden is found right next door.

Downtown you can find loads of trendy bars lining the bright murals at Roosevelt Row. And, anyone looking for a wild college area will appreciate Mill Avenue in Tempe.

There are so many great things to do in Phoenix . If you have never been, add this to the top of your list!

22. Las Vegas

Can’t Miss: Seven Magic Mountains , Red Rock Canyon

I am absolutely sure that you know the obvious things to do in Vegas – the casinos, the acrobatic performances, the well-dressed crowds and the buffets. And, you can certainly head to Vegas for these aspects!

But, there are a few other attractions near Vegas that I find to be a lot more interesting. For one, the large outdoor art installation called Seven Magic Mountains is a super-vibrant rainbow of color in the desert. You have got to check this colorful man-made sculpture out.

Also, a short drive away, consider visiting the Valley of Fire for some incredible rock formations reminiscent of what you’d see in Arizona and Utah.

Prefer to stay closer? Then head to Red Rock Canyon just outside of Vegas. Here you can admire towering cliffs, explore colorful canyons and take in the beauty of Nevada’s desert landscape.

A day trip to Las Vegas from Palm Springs will take you roughly 4 hours to drive, so you need to start super early to make the most of it!

23. Death Valley

Can’t Miss: Artists Palette and Badwater Basin

Death Valley is one of the best day trips from Palm Springs. Located in the California desert region , the park is home to some of the most stunning views in all of North America, including Badwater Basin and Artists Palette. Badwater Basin is a salt flat, and the lowest point on land in the United States. It sits 282 feet below sea level and visitors can explore a particularly interesting and unique landscape. Artists Palette is a colorful geological formation that features various shades of red, green, purple and more. The area was once an ancient lake bed and its rocks are comprised of different minerals that oxidize over time. Death Valley also offers activities like hiking, epic viewpoints, and stargazing – all doable in a day trip to Death Valley . Death Valley is a popular destination for visitors who wish to experience nature’s beauty up close.

Palm Canyon Drive is at the center of the downtown. Desert Hills Outlet Mall

Desert Hills Outlet Mall is only 20 minutes away and has shops for every taste and budget. Anchored by major retail stores, Desert Hills is the perfect place to find exclusive merchandise at affordable prices. The shops are set up in two blocks, the West Village and the East Village. Whitewater Preserve Trails 

Whitewater Preserve is a natural treasure and a great place to escape with miles of hiking trails. Wildlife enthusiast will get their fill as they will enjoy catching a peep of Big Horn sheep, bobcats, coyotes, bears, and deer that live on the Preserve lands.

Tahquitz Canyon Palm Springs

Before leaving the area, Tahquitz Canyon is another great spot to explore—a short, easy two-mile loop hike with lovely scenery to a spectacular seasonal 60-foot waterfall. Families could easily do this hike with children, which takes less than two hours. Parking is free, but there is a small admission price. Hiking sticks are available at the Visitors Center near the entrance.

Indian Canyons Palm Springs

Indian Canyons is just a short drive from downtown Palm Springs. The Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians preserve four canyons. The canyons are open – for a fee – to the general public for hiking, horseback riding, and picnicking. It is a moderate hike good for the entire family, with a gradual grade and partially paved footpath that weaves its way down into the canyon.

Big Morongo Canyon Preserve

Once home to several powerful clans of the Serrano First Nation, the park today is a permanent home for many creatures, none of them human. Big Morongo Preserve is internationally recognized as one of the top bird-watching sites in North America. National Geographic has featured the preserve in its popular Guide to Bird Watching Sites.

Coachella Valley Preserve

Located 10 miles east of Palm Springs near 1,000 Palms and fed by water seeping out of the San Andreas Fault. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park covers nearly 800,000 acres. The main park entrance is just over 40 miles from Palm Springs. The park contains two deserts, each with an ecosystem that varies according to elevation. The Mojave Desert part is the higher elevated section, drier and more relaxed. Plan a full day to explore this vast desert park.

Cabot’s Pueblo Museum

The history of the Pueblo people has been beautifully captured by Cabot and integrated into every room of the building. It took Cabot more than two decades to construct this multi-level structure comprising numerous stairways, narrow entrances, and hallways. On the other hand, Yerxa built a massive 5000 square foot mansion with over sixty rooms, each with a unique window or door design.

Desert Hot Springs Spa City

There is no direct train service to Palm Springs, however, Amtrak does offer a bus service.

I would suggest booking a hotel on or near South Plam Canyon Drive.

Is there a shuttle or bus from Palm Springs to universal studios for a 1 or 2 day trip?

That is a good question. I did some research and it looks like no tour bus service runs a shuttle bus to Universal Studios from Palm Springs.

You can take a tour with Southern California Gray Lines to Universal from Anaheim.

Bus departs at 9:00 a.m. returns around 9:00 pm. These tours include admission to Universal Studios.

The problem would be getting to Anaheim if you do not have a car.

Amtrak trains run daily from PS to Anaheim.

You could rent a car or perhaps use Uber to get to Anaheim by 9 am. Sounds like a very long day so consider spending a night in the Los Angeles area.

For 36 years, visitors have enjoyed the ultimate open-air shopping experience at the Street Fair at College of the Desert , a bountiful market that offers art, fashion, furniture, home goods, fresh foods (via a special farmer’s market section), and many other items.

You can also enjoy a look at vintage automobiles along with some premium live entertainment and gourmet food. As a bonus, all proceeds from market booth rentals go to benefit students in attendance at the College of the Desert.

11. Palm Desert Aquatic Center, Palm Desert, California

Hosted by the YMCA, the spacious and tropical Palm Desert Aquatic Center is a center of family fun featuring a trio of pools, multiple slides, and diving boards, and a wide variety of play features.

Swim classes and other activities are also up for offer at this 8-acre facility. Dive right in for ultimate fun!

One of the premier performing arts venues in the state of California, The McCallum Theatre has hosted shows featuring a vast variety of stars and luminaries; everyone from comics Bob Newhart and Lily Tomlin to musical acts like The Canadian Brass and Celtic Thunder, plus famous productions such as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Jersey Boys.

Like most visitors, I head to Palm Springs to flee life’s stresses: to revel in sunshine and the enormous sky, to watch the colors of the San Jacinto Mountains change from morning to evening, to do as little as possible. A culinary tour is never my primary agenda in the desert — and yet it’s my nature (and my job) to always be looking for my next great meal. Tourist-oriented restaurants abound, so places brimming with individual character that serve consistent, careful cooking tend to be very popular. Palm Springs endures as a weekend playground for Angelenos, so guides covering the best of the dining scene in a town of 45,000 full-time residents can become repetitive. I have my favorites and happily name them.

To stretch my knowledge, though, I also spent a recent week in the area following State Route 111 and eating through nearby Cathedral City and Palm Desert. Charmers serving Filipino, Salvadoran, Balkan and classic French cuisines particularly stood out. Consider them for sustenance on your way to or from Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and to add gratifying variety to your dining options during vacation all year round.

Beyond 350 days of sunshine per year, there are so many reasons to visit Palm Springs: sparkling pools, mid-century architecture, world-class events, arts and culture, and a thriving food scene (to name merely a few). It’s one of my favorite destinations in the world, and I have made multiple pilgrimages to the desert each year for the past two decades.

Ace Hotel & Swim Club

The Ace has an overall cool vibe but still feels accessible, with a fun pool scene and delicious (and even healthy) fare at King’s Highway.

Some of the details here favor form over function (as a light sleeper, I question the choice of white window coverings against the desert sun).

Even in a city full of cool hotels, the Ace stands out for its coolness factor. Formerly a mid-century desert modern Westward Ho with a Denny’s, the property is now a 179-room hotel and spa, where I’ve spent many memorable stays, from high-season festivals to low-season hangs by communal firesides.

Here there are two large pools and a spa; the pool scene is lively but not obnoxious, with DJs spinning for events and holidays. King’s Highway restaurant offers excellent California fare in a diner environment, and the next door Amigo Room is the perfect spot for an after-dinner — or daytime — drink. The hotel is within biking distance of downtown.

Sparrows Lodge

This low-key property in a restored 1950s-era Hollywood haunt is all-around vibey. Borrow a Sole townie bike to ride around town.

There are no TVs or phones in the rooms, and only two guests are permitted in each room.

Originally opened under the name Castle’s Red Barn in 1952 by MGM actor Don Castle and his wife, this property was one of the original resort getaways for Hollywood types in the mid-century age. And it still has that chic, cool energy; I can attest, having swirled around its pool for elite Coachella parties. Now completely restored, this low-key adults-only resort is marked by just a simple hand-painted sign bearing two sparrows.

The rooms, communal barn, fire pit, and vegetable garden, all have a chic rustic vibe. And there’s an on-site art collection with works by Ruscha, Kelly, Katz, and Baldessari. The 20 rooms have exposed beam ceilings, concrete floors with inlaid pebbles, and plush pillow-top mattresses with luxe Italian linens. Bathrooms feature rain showers, and many use horse troughs as unique bathtubs. Most rooms have private patios. Sparrows Lodge scored World’s Best Awards in 2022 and 2023.

This chic and walkable adults-only hotel is organized around a central pool, which makes for a convivial atmosphere.

The hotel is in a residential area and restricts noise between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

I was one of the first guests to stay at this ultra-chic property when it opened in 2007 — though mobster Al Wertheimer opened its first incarnation in 1936 and it was once a saloon, speakeasy, and Hollywood haunt for the likes of Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe.

In its current incarnation, it’s a boutique hotel property spread over three acres and organized around a sparkling central pool. Rooms feature mosaic tiles, colorful fabrics, Frette linens and robes, and many have fireplaces and claw-foot bathtubs. The Purple Palm restaurant sits right off the pool and the spa was recently redesigned. Colony Palms also made it onto our It List in 2022.

“Easily walkable to downtown, this palm-lined oasis is the perfect place to relax in Palm Springs. A celeb hangout since the 1930s, it's the type of spot Frank Sinatra would (and did) escape to from the bright lights of Hollywood. It was fully renovated in 2021, earning it a spot on T+L's 2022 It List. I stayed in the unforgettable 3,500-square-foot Hermann Residence, a private villa with its own backyard and Jacuzzi, but the rooms and bungalows offer just as much desert glamor on a smaller scale.” –Nina Ruggiero, Senior Editorial Director

Holiday House

The resort fee at this ultra-chic and walkable hotel includes continental breakfast plus the use of bicycles.

There are no TVs or phones in rooms, each room accommodates a maximum of two guests, and the whole property is non-smoking.

Originally opened in 1951, this 28-room downtown boutique hotel was styled by interior designer Mark D. Sikes and the team behind sister property Sparrows Lodge. The mid-century-influenced design elements all center around Gio Ponti-inspired tilework in the bar, where I enjoyed a lively brunch drinks date with my husband.

An impressive collection of artwork throughout the hotel includes works by David Hockney, Roy Liechtenstein, Herb Ritts, Alex Katz and Mr. Brainwash. There’s a communal atmosphere in the common spaces, and rooms feature Waterworks bath hardware and oversized showers, custom textiles, curated artwork, excellent selections in the mini bars, and Cowshed bath amenities. A simple continental breakfast is included in the resort fee, with homemade bread and pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola, cheese, and charcuterie. This property landed on our World’s Best Awards list in 2022 and 2023.

• Parking: Yes, free and available.

Dive Palm Springs

This petite boutique hotel features whimsical touches (including a repurposed Parisian elevator cage from the belle époque) in its unique rooms and suites.

This small hotel is located near the convention center, but the area isn’t super walkable.

Located in Deepwell Estates (near the Palm Springs Convention Center), this hotel is as boutique-y as they come, with just 11 rooms. Inspired by the French Riviera of the 1960s, this property is only for the 21-and-up set. King rooms feature rattan beds covered with Belgian linen atop Tuft and Needle mattresses, plus furniture from Serena & Lily, Anthropologie, and L.A. designers, and rainfall showers and touch-lit mirrors.

Fashion illustrator Gabriella Fash created original wall murals and most rooms include an outdoor patio with an oversized daybed. The dreamy La Reve room has a queen-size brass bed plus custom wallpaper and a ceiling mural by Christian Lacroix. And the two-bedroom Paris suite transforms a 1919 belle époque brass and copper elevator cage from Paris into a queen bed.

“Palm Springs is full of boutique hotels, and I've been to many of them. There's definitely a certain formula: one level, rooms surrounding a pool, bougainvillea-covered outdoor common areas. Avalon Palm Springs

This property is the perfect size – not too large or too small – and it’s easy to get around but with plentiful on-site amenities. Plus, the views around the main pool are Instagram gold.

While the property is technically family-friendly, you will get looks if your kids are being boisterous anywhere except the designated family pool. (We were once asked gently to relocate there — and the staffer kindly comped a round of drinks for our troubles.)

After one of my first visits to this property, I was so smitten with the whole vibe (in its former incarnation as the Viceroy) that I designed my wedding decor and motifs around it. I’ve been back many times since, and it always feels like home — the boutique hotel is somehow both impeccably manicured but also down to earth, with 70 Spanish-style lodgings, including studios and 13 private villas, with a residential feel nestled among three pools. Estrella spa and Chi Chi Restaurant round out the full suite of offerings.

• Accessibility: Accessible room categories include premium king studio and one-bedroom suites.
• Rates: $137
• Parking: Valet parking is included in the resort fee for one vehicle per room. Additional cars will be charged $20 per night per car. Self-parking on the street is also available.
• Pet Policy: Dogs are welcome with a $100 one-time, non-refundable cleaning fee (per pet). Two pets maximum with a maximum weight of 45 pounds per pet. With every pet stay, Avalon donates 10 percent of the pet fee to the Best Friends Animal Society.

Parker Palm Springs

The vibe at this high-design hotel feels sophisticated and posh, but I found that my twins were warmly welcomed here even when they were toddlers.

The $50 resort fee is higher than most, and it doesn’t include the $45 daily valet parking.

This mid-century gem is gorgeous and photogenic, with cheeky interiors designed by Jonathan Adler and a dramatic cinder block entrance wall that sets the scene for visual delights throughout the verdant property. The Parker features two pools (one for adults and one for families with kids) as well as two restaurants, a spa, salon, tennis courts, and fitness center. Accommodations range from standard rooms to spacious villas.

• Distance From Airport: 2.7 miles
• Accessibility: Accessible rooms with king or two double beds available.
• Rates: From $319
• Parking: Yes, valet only at $45 per day.
• Pet Policy: Pets are permitted with a fee of $200 per night per pet.

Booking Tip

If you’re traveling with kids, ask for the corner room on the second floor of the main building; it’s got plenty of room to spread out.

“This Jonathan Adler-decorated hotel is what I’d want my villa in Palm Springs to look like — if I had one, that is. There wasn’t an area on the property that didn’t beg for photos to be taken, and there were little delights everywhere from a “Lemonade Stand” outdoor bar with a spot for an impromptu pétanque game to s’mores by the fire at night. The room itself was light and airy, sprinkled with accents from the acclaimed designer, and I still dream about the mirrored bathroom — best selfies ever! — with the most luxe array of toiletries including Hermès soap, Le Labo shampoo, Bulgari lotion, and even Aesop mouthwash.” –Morgan Ashley Parker, Associate Editorial Director, Commerce

JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa

This sprawling, family-friendly resort has a lively atmosphere, and plenty of amenities including golf and mini golf, tennis, a spa, and even an on-site arcade.

This family-friendly hotel may not appeal as much to visitors without kids (use the spa pool with a treatment or day pass for a child-free experience).

Not every traveler is looking for an intimate boutique hotel experience, and this expansive Marriott checks the boxes for those seeking a full-service stay and a convivial atmosphere with tons of options to entertain the whole family. Mine thoroughly enjoyed our spring break stay here, and that’s a tall order for my ever-harder-to-please tweens.

The lush grounds feature peaceful waterways with a flock of flamingos, plus a lake on which guests can take serene boat rides. There are six restaurants offering a range of cuisines including the Japanese steakhouse Mikado, multiple pools, two championship golf courses, a tennis center and volleyball courts, and a jogging path. We enjoyed on-site activities like tie-dying T-shirts and organized lawn games. There’s even a large-scale on-site arcade that my kids (and OK — I, too) spent hours in and absolutely loved. The massive 38,000 square-foot spa has 48 individual treatment rooms and expansive co-ed spa areas great for a date day or girls trip; try the Mind Sync vibrational wellness chairs, too.

• Accessibility: Accessible rooms and it’s a Certified Autism Center-designated property
• Rates: From $237
• Parking: Self parking is included, or valet parking is $45 per night.
• Pet Policy: New as of April 2024, pets are now permitted with a non-refundable pet fee of $150 along with a $20 daily cleaning fee. Special dog amenities are given upon check-in.

Saguaro Palm Springs

The Saguaro Hotel

This super colorful hotel is so fun to look at and photograph, with a great Mexican restaurant and opportunities to score great deals.

The pool scene can be overwhelming, especially when holiday weekends bring DJs and a packed crowd. You will not find serenity (or a good spot around the pool) on these dates.

I’ve come here for everything from Coachella to bachelorette parties to date weekends with my husband; its rainbow-hued exterior and interior decor details are so fun and Instagrammable, and reasonable entry-level price points are available even sometimes in higher seasons. (You’ll occasionally find a deal under $100 here even as hotel room rates are soaring overall.) The Mexican restaurant and bar El Jefe has both a fun scene and delicious menu of tacos and more. Each colorful room has a private balcony or patio.

• Parking: Self-parking only. One car is included in the resort fee; additional cars are subject to a $15 nightly fee.
• Pet Policy: Dogs are allowed with a $50 fee and a signed waiver.

Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs

The Kimpton is eminently walkable and features the only rooftop pool in Palm Springs.

The downtown location can mean a noisy experience, and the pool is small compared to others in the desert.

With its downtown location anchoring the shopping and dining district The Block, this centrally-located hotel is easy walking distance to a variety of dining, shopping, and culture options, not to mention hiking trails. At seven stories tall, it’s a towering structure amid the desert’s low landscape, and features the city’s only rooftop pool and cabanas.

It also features the Michelin-recommended 4 Saints restaurant and other all-day dining options. All 153 airy, bright rooms and suites have either mountain views or private balconies. New in spring 2024 are six pickleball courts on site; play for guests is included with the resort fee. The Kimpton also landed on our World’s Best Awards list in 2021.

• Accessibility: ADA-accessible rooms available with single king or double queen beds
• Rates: From $389
• Parking: Yes, complimentary valet and self-parking for hotel guests (included in daily resort fee).

Know Before You Go

It can get pricey during high season.

High season in the Desert runs from December through April, and peak season can cause prices even for otherwise affordable hotels to soar exponentially. It also means vacancy rates are low, and on-the-spot bookings can be practically impossible during events like Coachella. So be sure to plan ahead and book far in advance. (Better deals are available in the summer season, for instance, when temperatures swelter.)

Consider renting a car

Palm Springs can be hard to get to without a car. And having access to one makes it much easier to get around, especially if you’re looking to visit nearby destinations like Joshua Tree National Park. (But if you’re staying right in downtown Palm Springs and plan to remain local, biking around town is feasible, and many hotels rent bikes as well.)

The weather varies dramatically by season

Though Palm Springs gets about 350 days of sunshine per year, it’s not always warm. Don’t expect pool weather in the winter, and bring layers as the desert nights and mornings can be cool. In the summer, temperatures regularly far exceed 100 degrees, and you’ll want to be prepared with plenty of SPF and water. If you’ll be heading up into the mountains during your stay, expect dramatically cooler temperatures at elevation. (I once enjoyed a hearty Christmas eve snowfall atop the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway with my family — a priceless, and cold, memory.)

In 'Pack With Me,' influencers and editors give us a rundown of their travel must-haves and a few travel hacks to go along with them. For this installment, Jasmine Tookes shared what essentials are in her suitcase for a trip to Palm Springs, CA.

Victoria's Secret model and Joja activewear co-founder Jasmine Tookes is one of the many celebrity faces to frequent Coachella in Palm Springs, CA, so it's no surprise she has a grasp on festival fashion . But Tookes, 33, lives in LA, so Palm Springs is a repeat destination on her travel list. She visits the desert oasis for casual weekend getaways, hitting up brunch hot spots like the Parker and Farm in the desert heat. While festival season trends range from decorative bows to fringe and cowboy boots to wild nail art , Tookes tells PS she prefers to keep her Palm Springs style classic and simple.

"Whenever I'm in Palm Springs it's all about relaxing," Tookes says. "Waking up and getting some sun by the pool is the perfect start to any Palm Springs morning. If I am there for the festival, I usually head there around 4 p.m. as the heat starts to go down. Listening to music during sunset is such a nice vibe when you are surrounded by all of your friends."

This season, Tookes styled VS's Dream Angels Wicked Corset Teddy with RŌARI's Stella Skirt at the CELSIUS Cosmic Desert Event for a flirty take on festival fashion. She accessorized with gold jewelry and her Saint Laurent sunglasses — one of the first Palm Springs essentials she mentioned when listing off the must haves in her suitcase. She still regards a white satin dress with a thin belt and flats as her favorite festival outfit of all time.
