The History of THE MUSKOKA LAKES NAVIGATION COMPANY

The Muskoka Lakes Navigation Company (a.k.a. NAVCO), from its founding in 1866 until its demise as a common carrier in September 1958, operated the largest and finest fleet of inland lake steamships in North America. Its only rivals on inland waterways (that is not including the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway and the British Columbia and Atlantic Coasts) were the Canadian Pacific Railway fleet on four inland lakes in British Columbia and the British Yukon Navigation fleet on the Yukon River in the Yukon Territory. These latter fleets, of shallow draft sternwheel steamers with overnight passenger accommodation, provided a quite different service from NAVCO on the Muskoka Lakes.

THE ORIGINAL

RETRACE OUR HISTORY →

The company has operated under several corporate names since starting service in 1886..

Small, primitive steamer Wenonah, built and owned by A.P. Cockburn, commenced service on the Muskoka Lakes. As far as is known, this early operation was not incorporated.

Muskoka and Nipissing Navigation Company

Company incorporated as “Muskoka and Nipissing Navigation Company” and built steamer Inter-Ocean for service on Lake Nipissing. (See Tatley, Volume I, page 103)

The Muskoka and Georgian Bay Navigation Company

Following withdrawal of Lake Nipissing service account railway competition, Company started service between Midland and Parry Sound and was renamed “The Muskoka and Georgian Bay Navigation Company” (See Tatley, Volume I, page 149)

The Muskoka Lakes Navigation and Hotel Company Limited

Following withdrawal of the Georgian Bay service, Company built the Royal Muskoka Hotel on Lake Rosseau. It then became “The Muskoka Lakes Navigation and Hotel Company Limited”. This Company dissolved in the 1950’s, following the burning of the Royal Muskoka Hotel and after selling the remaining steamers. (See Tatley, Volume I, page 265)

Muskoka Lakes Navigation and Hotel Company Limited

The name and charter of the Muskoka Lakes Navigation and Hotel Company Limited was revived to operate the restored steamer Segwun.

Thus, there are two distinct NAVCO histories. The first is the traditional steam era history where the Company served as a common carrier extension of the steam railways. It started with the one pioneer steamboat serving the earliest Muskoka settlers, grew as the territory developed as a prime tourist area and then declined after 1930 as both freight and passengers moved to the highways. This story ends with the withdrawal of the last steamers, Sagamo and Segwun , in September 1958, with the expectation that neither would run again.

The second NAVCO story starts with the idea of refurbishing RMS Segwun in 1969 and its resuming service in June 1981. This re-born NAVCO is a story in itself with the Segwun restoration being the only successful steamboat restoration in North America. This success story continues with the Company taking on the operation of the heritage steam yacht Wanda III in 1993 and the entirely new cruise vessel, Wenonah II in 2002. The Company is now wholly owned by the Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre, a registered charity and the owner of the three ships. As such, this revived NAVCO is not a common carrier but operates public cruises to preserve knowledge of the steam era and to let the public experience “the fun, romance and history” of the Muskoka Lakes.

With thanks to Dr. Gordon Shaw.

Sunset Cruises

The “Muskoka Experience” is incomplete without a cruise on the three big Muskoka Lakes , which offer stunning views of the rugged Canadian Shield and beautiful cottages. During the cruise, you can enjoy live commentary on the local history and lore. Sunset Cruises is owned and operated by Captain Randy Potts , a licensed captain with over 30 years of experience. It provides a unique alternative to larger ships, taking visitors to Muskoka scenery that can only be accessed by smaller boats. They go where larger boats can’t. The Peerless II , a gasoline and home heating oil delivery boat, made its living for over 50 years. They have restored it to offer visitors and locals a chance to experience the historic supply boat era on the lakes. Our daily cruises depart from Port Carling, and we recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment. It’s also a fantastic venue to host an intimate wedding.

What you’ll see on Lady Muskoka Cruises

A Lake Muskoka boat cruise is a great way to see many of the otherwise inaccessible Muskoka points of interest. A good portion of the trip navigates through the narrow (at least for a ship of this size) Muskoka River. Here we were able to get great views of some of the beautiful cottages and homes that have become synonymous with Muskoka life. And to our children’s delight, we passed by Santa’s Village theme park. And Santa’s boat was out sailing the waters, giving us an early taste of Christmas!

Santas boat from Santas Village in Bracebridge Ontario seen from a Lady Muskoka boat cruise on the Muskoka river

This was shortly after we passed through a narrow break in the islands. It was one of the most fun parts of the trip. There were cottagers out waving at the boats and children jumping from the high cliffs into the beautiful Muskoka waters.

Muskoka fall colors on a Lady Muskoka cruise in Bracebridge Ontario

Next, we made our way into Lake Muskoka. Many small islands dot this picturesque Ontario lake. Many of them privately owned. The captain explained the history of many of the Lake’s residents both famous and infamous. We passed by Muskoka attractions like Millionaire’s Row. The size and style of many of these Lake Muskoka cottages dazzled us. Only to be told that what we were seeing was probably only the boathouse!

What to See and Do in Bracebridge Muskoka

A Muskoka cruise is only one of the many things to do in Muskoka, Ontario. Bracebridge and the surrounding area have a lot to offer those who travel with kids. If you are visiting the weekend after Canadian Thanksgiving, taking in the Muskoka fall colors at the Bala Cranberry Festival in nearby Bala, Ontario is a must. Bala is one of the top Muskoka places to visit. You can read about the Bala Cranberry Festival here .
