‘Tremendously civilised’: Neil Hannon at the Barbican.

The Divine Comedy review – reassuringly civilised

Barbican, London A socially distanced Neil Hannon and bandmates celebrate 30 years of wry drollery in a short but sweet retrospective

“H ey!” ejaculates the Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon , waving his hands, “it’s … a gig !” We all know how he feels; personally, it’s my first time back in a room with a band since March. The singer’s amused disbelief chimes with tonight’s surreal setting; it is a very Neil Hannon sort of emotion, too. This is an artist with a career-permeating sense of being slightly taken aback.

The first track the Divine Comedy play of a short-but-sweet hour-long live set – Absent Friends – rings out all too poignantly in a socially distanced, one third-full Barbican hall. What a lot of people are not here tonight! Hopefully, they will be tuning in via the live stream. And what a lot of space there is in which to put your coat: clots of seats in ones and twos wear an orange stripe to denote occupation. Acres of brown velour separates them. The bar is shut; preordered drinks await, kept cool by gel discs most often seen on small children nursing a bruised forehead.

It is all tremendously, reassuringly civilised – but even in normal times, a Divine Comedy gig was never going to find the urbane Northern Irishman, tonight wearing a cream suit and brown scarf, stage-diving into a pit of shirtless acolytes. In the preamble to the live stream, Hannon flags this reprieve from Netflix as a set of “comforting, cosy, nice, all-the-ones-you-know-type songs”. Later, he will dedicate a song to the crew. “Please Mr Johnson, can we have some more?” he pleads, regarding the support still lacking for the creative industries.

And while it isn’t an excuse to hang up critical judgment, Hannon’s brand of knowing rompery may be just be the ticket right now – a reminder of all the lovely vanities heaped on the bonfire of 2020. A Lady of a Certain Age , from 2006’s Victory for the Comic Muse , is one of Hannon’s most nuanced character studies, telling the tale of a fading mid-20th century Cote D’Azur It-girl. Like some coda to The Boy Friend , the 1953 musical by Sandy Wilson, itself a homage to flapper-era drollery, the song neither endorses the woman’s absurdly hollow high life, nor punishes her for it. No one is writing songs about that sort of thing at the moment, much less playing them on double basses, grand pianos and accordions.

Not all that many people were writing songs like that back in the 1990s either, when the Divine Comedy started, and Hannon’s out-of-time outpourings served as a corrective to the cruder excesses of Britpop. You could, however, tentatively locate kinship between Hannon and Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, two ironic over-thinkers obsessed with sex and erudite storytelling.

The Divine Comedy should have been celebrating 30 years of witty chanson with a residency here last month, revisiting all their albums back-to-back. That’s happening in 2021 now ; this, then, is a radio edit of Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time , the band’s career retrospective, in which all the albums share disc-space with rarities and My Lovely Horse – a song Hannon wrote for the TV sitcom Father Ted .

No, the Divine Comedy do not play My Lovely Horse tonight. There is, though, a musical of Father Ted in the works. In a 2019 interview Hannon reckoned that it would actually be in theatres “ at the end of a piece of string ”; you imagine that goes double now. No one is of a mind to heckle for the Horse, either – a shame, since a little give-and-take would have punctuated the atmosphere of relieved enthusiasm.

Instead, there is a pick ’n’ mix of comedic milestones, in which the worst song from Hannon’s most recent album, Norman and Norma, shares airtime with his other worst song, National Express, which also happens to be the Divine Comedy’s greatest hit.

The band take a bow at the Barbican.

In case you missed 2019’s double album, Office Politics , Norman and Norma hymns a couple who revive their marriage by doing historical re-enactments. The best that can be said for the songs in which Hannon investigates the lives of imaginary ordinary people doing slightly contrived things – enjoying coach travel, getting frisky in Cromer – is that they are delivered magnificently, with his excellent band on point.

Hannon’s debt to Noël Coward and light operetta has never been in doubt, but today of all days, you wonder why he hasn’t gone all out to make more musicals ( he has done some ). The death of the librettist of Les Misérables , Herbert Kretzmer , was announced last week, and it is a pity that no fairy godmother ever brought West End impresario Cameron Mackintosh to a Divine Comedy gig.

This is clearly not the right outing for Hannon’s darker, more sincere songs , those indebted to Scott Walker and Jacques Brel, where bad things are not played for laughs. Fortunately, though, Hannon’s big-hearted paeans to beauty and love are many and varied. To the Rescue is a late-career keeper from 2016’s Foreverland , about Hannon’s love for his partner, Cathy Davey; the band exercise maximum restraint, and Hannon nurses a tiny beaker of red wine as the music swirls.

Because they forget a song, the gig has two finales – one, a superb rollick through Tonight We Fly , the band’s traditional end point – and the excellent Our Mutual Friend , a song about a not-so-nice friend, one who is a little too present, as the deceitful third party in a love triangle. Hannon ends up on the floor on his back, determined to fix in his memory this stopgap gig that is both “the start of the tour, and the end of the tour”.

Neil Hannon on Divine Comedy best of, tour and new Radio Ulster documentary series

David roy chats to neil hannon about celebrating 30-plus years of the divine comedy with a new 'best of' and tour, plus taking listeners on a musical jaunt around europe with his new weekly radio ulster documentary series....

THIS year got off to a sad start for Divine Comedy leader Neil Hannon: his father, the Rt Rev Brian Hannon, passed away last month at the age of 85 following a long battle with Alzheimer's.

There was huge outpouring of public affection for the former long-serving Church of Ireland Bishop of Clogher following his death on January 10 and, in a press statement, Hannon (51) acknowledged how such warm sentiments had helped "make this time a little less sad, a little more celebratory" for the Hannon family.

"It was lovely to have such a genuine reaction from everybody that remembered him," explains the musician, who has spoken many times about the support he received from his parents while pursing dreams of pop stardom.

"His legacy will probably last longer than mine."

To be fair, the Derry-born Co Fermanagh-raised singer/songwriter isn't doing too badly himself, having chalked up six Top 20 singles and five Top 20 albums since signing his first record deal in 1990 at the age of 20.

Impressively, The Divine Comedy's most recent album, 2019's Office Politics, was the highest placing of Hannon's career, reaching number five in the 'proper' album chart and topping the indie chart.

Newcomers would do well to start with the newly released Charmed Life: The Best of The Divine Comedy, a 24-track compilation of hit singles and Neil/fan favourites which also features a rather good new song, The Best Mistakes, a reflective/celebratory earworm which makes for an effective distillation of his sophisticated, wry pop sensibilities.

Charmed Life: The Best of The Divine Comedy

"It's getting lots of play on the radio – that's not like my singles," he quips, speaking to The Irish News from the Co Kildare home he shares with partner Cathy Davey.

"Everybody seems to like it which is great. I had the idea for the chorus lying around for ages and I thought it would be quite apt for the situation, so then I finished the song with this 'best of' in mind."

Obviously, it's difficult to condense three decades of creativity down to just two CDs worth of material. A cursory glance at Charmed Life's track listing reveals a couple of notable absences, such as hit singles The Frog Princess and The Pop Singer's Fear of The Pollen Count.

But then, with 27 singles to choose from and plenty of beloved album tracks also demanding a spot in the running order, something was always going to be left on the shelf.

"Giving people a more three-dimensional perspective of the band was more important than having all of the little radio songs, you know?" explains Hannon.

"There are quite a few songs that have joined the Divine Comedy pantheon without having been singles, so they had to go on as well. And there were a few that I just wanted to put on for my own taste, really."

The Divine Comedy man has also been busy curating other people's tunes of late for his new six-part radio series, Europop: A Grand Tour. Beginning on Radio Ulster tomorrow afternoon, it finds Hannon embarking on an eclectic musical trawl across 'the Continent' – one hour per week per country/region.

Neil Hannon

It seems that when Radio Ulster pitched him the idea, he found it hard to say no – and then quickly realised the amount of work that was going to be involved.

"My problem is that I can't do things by halves, which I suppose is a good thing, but the problem is you say 'yes' to too much and then you're suddenly trying to write a film, do a radio show, write your biography, blah blah blah," explains Neil, who was also hard at work finishing his soundtrack songs for the forthcoming Wonka movie starring Timothee Chalamet during this period.

"So I spent most of the autumn just listening to great European music. The shows are incredibly diverse, they go from my favourite pop music to film soundtracks, to classical music, to jazz and folk music. I mean, I'm not a great 'folkie', but I've heard a lot of stuff now that I actually really like.

"I knew a lot about most of it, so it was really about joining the dots with the help of Spotify and Google, really. Just as an example, the great Italian soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone also wrote quite a few songs in the 1950s and 1960s. I discovered that one of my favourite songs by Francoise Hardy was actually a cover of a song Morricone wrote for an Italian singer in the 60s."

On the subject of this Italian legend, Hannon reveals how glad he was to catch Morricone in concert back in 2019, just over a year before he passed away.

"I just got in in time," he says.

"I even dragged my daughter along. I think she liked it – but I don't really care. It was just like: this is good music, you must like it."

The Divine Comedy will shortly be back on the road themselves to celebrate the new 'best of', including a run of Irish dates in May and special 30th anniversary residencies in London and Paris (postponed from 2020) which will find them performing every Divine Comedy album in full.

This means learning 150-odd songs, some of which have never been played live before.

Neil Hannon. Picture by Kevin Westenberg

"We'll be doing two albums a night – and they've caused me many sleepless nights," Hannon admits of these career-spanning gigs, for which proper preparations have yet to commence.

"They kept being postponed, but much like when the exam you were so worried about gets postponed, you still end up not really doing the work anyway. So there will be a lot of practising and a lot of re-arranging and I am definitely going to have the lyrics in front of me on an iPad – because there is no way I am going to remember everything. I have enough difficulty with a normal show."

After that, it seems the Divine Comedy leader will be happy to start concentrating on new work again rather than celebrating his illustrious past.

"There's been a real sort of buried subconscious feeling of like 'Oh God, I really want to go and make some new music'," he admits of his recent 'stocktaking'.

"But I've had to really push it down, because it's important to take this moment to look back on it all. And it's actually helpful to me to re-appraise everything.

"I see the bits where I kind of went down rabbit holes or just did things badly. But also, I checked our some of the early stuff that I hadn't listened to for ages and thought 'My God, I had a lot of b***s'. Like, 'I will have a male voice choir on this track – and no-one is going to stop me'.

"It's nice to remind yourself that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. And now I have a clean slate – so I have no idea what my next stuff will sound like."

We look forward to finding out.

Neil Young is making his return to the Denver area this summer after not having played in Colorado since 2016.

He and Crazy Horse are set to play Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village on July 31. The last time Young played in Colorado was in October 2016 in Telluride, where he owns a barn he rebuilt. That barn is also home to a recording studio he called "Studio in the Clouds" where he recorded his 2019 album, "Colorado."

That album marked the reunion of Young and Crazy Horse after a 7-year hiatus. The group has played together for a combined 50 years.

Neil Young preforms at Denver University's Magness Arena, promoting his new album, "Fork in the Road." Young delivered classics and songs from his new album in a two and a half hour show. Opening for Young was the Neville Brothers and Everest. Tim Rasmuss

"In the spirit it's offered...made this for the Horse lovers. I can't stop it. The horse is runnin'. What a ride we have. I don't want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share," Young said in a statement about the tour.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show is set to start at 7:30 p.m.

Presales began Tuesday but general ticket sales don't start until 10 a.m. Friday. You can buy tickets at AXS.com .

Neil Young And Crazy Horse Kick Off Love Earth Tour 2024: Here’s The Setlist

by Em Casalena April 25, 2024, 12:40 pm

Neil Young’s highly-anticipated Love Earth Tour just kicked off with Crazy Horse in San Diego, California yesterday at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. As always, Young puts on one hell of a show and hasn’t slowed down at this point in his six-decade career.

Videos by American Songwriter

[ Buy Tickets to See Neil Young and Crazy Horse Live in 2024 ]

Young performed some of his greatest hits, including “Cortez The Killer” and “Heart Of Gold” to fans’ delight. He performed a couple of deep cuts as well.

Young and Crazy Horse killed the performance, and it’s clear that both the legend and the band have quite a bit of pent-up creativity. They’ve just put out a new collaborative album as well, FU##IN’ UP , which was released just a few days ago on April 20. An all-format version will be released tomorrow, April 26.

Neil Young’s Love Earth Tour Setlist

Curious about what you can expect from Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s current tour? Here’s the setlist from last night’s show:

1. “Cortez The Killer”

2. “Cinnamon Girl”

3. “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’)”

4. “Don’t Cry No Tears”

5. “Down By The River”

6. “The Losing End (When You’re On)”

7. “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”

8. “Powderfinger”

9. “Love And Only Love”

10. “Comes A Time” (Solo/Acoustic Performance)

11. “Heart Of Gold” (Solo/Acoustic Performance)

12. “Human Highway” (Solo/Acoustic Performance)

13. “Don’t Be Denied”

14. “Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)”

While fans shouldn’t expect Young’s setlist to be exactly the same for all of the Love Earth Tour’s upcoming dates, last night’s show in Cali gave a pretty solid preview of what fans can expect from the rest of the trek.

Young and Crazy Horse will perform another set tonight at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre before traveling to Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and onward towards Canada.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Neil Young performing at SDSU on April 24, 2024.

The concert began with an epic, 15-minute version of ‘Cortez The Killer’ that featured extra lyrics recently unearthed by Young. Guitarist-singer Micah Nelson, Willie’s son, very ably assumed the role in Crazy Horse of Nils Lofgren, now on tour with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

When Neil Young sang “rock and roll will never die” near the conclusion of his tour-opening LOVE EARTH concert with Crazy Horse Wednesday in San Diego, you believed him.

Those words, from his 1978 song, “Hey Hey My My (Into the Black),” sounded like a defiant vow in the face of possible obsolescence 46 years ago. Now, they are a statement of fact from a proud maverick who sounds more committed than ever, even — or, rather, especially — at a time when rock is increasingly becoming a niche genre pushed aside by formulaic pop, hip-hop and dance-music.

At 78, Young remains a staunch keeper of the flame whose passion for music burns as bright as ever. If anyone thinks this veteran singer, songwriter and guitarist is ready to kick back in his old age, he and his band immediately and convincingly refuted such notions with their powerful, nearly two-hour performance at SDSU’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. (They are set to perform a second sold-out show at the same venue Thursday night.)

Young and his three-man band opened with “Cortez the Killer,” an epic number from their 1975 album, “Zuma.” But this was no sentimental journey down nostalgia lane, nor was it a tentative, shake-off-the-dust run through.

Their carefully calibrated version of “Cortez” built to a series of powerful climaxes Monday and lasted 15 minutes — nearly twice as long as the original on “Zuma.” The song began with an opening guitar jam that lasted 7 minutes before Young’s reedy vocals commenced. For good measure, near the conclusion of “Cortez,” he sang — for the first time anywhere in concert — a missing verse he recently came upon that had been cut from the 1975 recording.

The unearthed lyrics provided additional depth and a palpable sense of despair to Young’s tour de force song about Hernán Cortez, the bloody Spanish conqueror of Mexico’s Aztec Empire: I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter / I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.

The next selection was the buoyant “Cinnamon Girl,” a choice cut from 1969’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” the first album Young and Crazy Horse made together. It clocked in at a crisp three minutes.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse performed at the Open Air Theatre at San Diego State April 24, 2024.

The rest of the concert included several other extended jams, with “Down by the River” and “Love and Only Love” both clocking in at a glorious 16 minutes (but not lasting one second too long). Conversely, Young’s tender solo acoustic versions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold” and “Human Highway” were each delivered with admirable concision.

The manner in which he alternated between longer and shorter selections served as a master class on how to pace a concert to build momentum and achieve maximum dynamic tension and release.

The final encore was an eight-minute rendition of “My My Hey Hey (Into the Black),” whose line There’s more to the picture than meets the eye could be a synopsis of Young’s career and his dogged determination to do things his way, every time, no matter what the trends of the day may be.

At SDSU, Young and his longtime Crazy Horse compadres — bassist/singer Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, both 80 — were focused and in sync from start to finish. They were joined by guitarist/singer Micah Nelson, 33, who on Monday had played a key role accompanying his father, Willie Nelson, at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Review: Willie Nelson’s San Diego concert defined, not defied, the passing of time. He turns 91 on April 29.

The American music-master and his band warmed up a damp, cool evening at The Shell. David Sanger, the drummer in opening act Asleep At The Wheel, took the ferry back to his family’s home in Coronado after the show.

April 23, 2024

Micah Nelson was performing in place of Crazy Horse charter member Nils Lofgren, who is now on tour in The E Street Band with his other longtime employer, Bruce Springsteen. Those are big shoes to fill, but Nelson was so in sync with Young you’d think they had been musical partners for decades.

The stage was bedecked with the giant, faux Fender guitar amplifiers, speaker cabinets and road cases Young and Crazy Horse used on their 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour. There were no video screens on the stage, the better for the audience — which included basketball great Bill Walton and Las Vegas Raiders NFL team owner Mark Davis — to focus completely on the music at hand.

The SDSU concert — the start of Young and Crazy Horse’s first major tour together in a decade — came a year after Young’s mesmerizing solo concert here at The Shell. Wednesday’s performance was even more mesmerizing, in large part because of the musical empathy between the four musicians.

Review: Neil Young delivered singular San Diego solo concert by digging deep for new/old musical gold

The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee performed his first San Diego solo concert in 31 years, mixing classics with deep, deep album cuts

July 12, 2023

When they locked into a groove, which was often, they seemed to be of one mind. And it’s difficult to think of any other rock band of any vintage that can gain as much traction from so many slow-paced songs.

With few exceptions, Young’s biting guitar solos contained a minimum of notes, but he made each one count, repeatedly going into a zone where feeling and intensity trump quantity. Or, to invoke the title of Young’s 1988 album: “This Note’s For You.”

Apart from a heartfelt spoken tribute to the late David Briggs — the producer of many of Young’s albums with (and without) Crazy Horse — Young’s comments to the audience were along the lines of: “Thank you” and “How ya doin’?”

Otherwise, he let his music speak for him, and it spoke volumes.

When  Neil Young announced his tour with  Crazy Horse back in February, he didn’t announce much else. All fans really knew was that Young and his longtime on-and-off backing band would play 16 shows (since increased to 28) with  Willie Nelson ‘s son  Micah taking over guitar duties for  Nils Lofgren who is touring with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band . Those who showed up to his tour opener on Wednesday in San Diego rolled the dice on what they might get, and they were rewarded for their faith with a night full of classic songs, a “new” verse on an old favorite, lengthy bouts of improvisation, and a solo acoustic interlude.

As the crew drew back a curtain to reveal the oversized amplifiers and road cases from the 1978  Rust Never Sleeps tour (H/T  Rolling Stone ), Young took the stage at the  Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre  alongside Nelson, drummer Ralph Molina , and bassist  Billy Talbot . Armed with Old Black, Young started the show off with a bang on a 14-minute version of “Cortez the Killer”. Amid the tight, heavily distorted jamming, Young unveiled a lost verse for the 1975  Zuma favorite which was left off the original recording because the studio console briefly lost power. Young recently stumbled upon the original lyrics and revealed earlier this month that audiences would hear the song as it was originally written.

“I floated on the water,” Young sang. “I ate that ocean wave/Two weeks after the slaughter/I was living in a cave/They came too late to get me/But there’s no one here to set me free/From this rocky grave/To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

Young and Crazy Horse delivered a one-two punch of classics by following up “Cortez the Killer” with “Cinnamon Girl”. After that came “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’)” from 1996’s  Broken Arrow , which proved the newest song played all night. The band dug deep for lengthy runs through “Down by the River” (15 minutes) and “Love and Only Love” (16 minutes), while between jams Young romped through “Don’t Cry No Tears”, “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere”, and “Powderfinger” with vigor unexpected from a near-octogenarian.

Following the lengthy “Love and Only Love”, Young eschewed his bandmates and strapped on his harmonica for a solo interlude. The acoustic-armed Young led singalongs on “Comes a Time”, “Heart of Gold”, and “Human Highway” before bringing the band back out to stomp through a finale of “Don’t Be Denied” and “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)”.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse return to Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre tonight, April 25th, for their second of two sold-out shows.  Check out some videos of the tour opener from Todd Norris below.
