FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORTHERN LIGHTS TOURS

For tips on viewing the northern lights, read on. We’ve answered the most commonly asked questions about Nordic aurora borealis tours here to help you make your dream trip a reality.

Alternatively, find out how to make a booking , have a look at our FAQs , or learn about our Book With Confidence travel plan.

1. ARE THE NORDICS SAFE TO TRAVEL TO?

Yes, the Nordics are widely regarded as safe for visitors. Actually, the Nordic nations – Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – continually rank among the top 10 safest places in the world . This is because they have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety.

2. WHAT ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are a natural phenomenon. You can see them illuminating the sky when charged particles from solar flares collide with atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, near the North Pole. This collision creates varied shapes and colours that ripple, flash or glow in the sky.

3. WHAT MONTHS CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS?

You have the best chance of spotting the aurora borealis in the winter months – October to April. To make out the colours of the aurora, you need dark winter nights. In the summer, daylight hours are so long that you’ll find the sky is too bright to see the glowing lights.

As it is a natural occurrence, spotting the northern lights is not guaranteed. But you can increase your chances of witnessing them by visiting the Arctic Circle in winter.

4. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

As you need a dark sky to distinguish the aurora, the best time to see the northern lights is at night. The peak hours tend to be between 11 PM and 2 AM, which is why your guided tour will likely depart after 9 PM.

You could also stay at a hotel with an aurora wake-up service. The staff will let you know if the lights come out late in the night, so you don’t have to stay up waiting for them!

The best time of year to see the northern lights is winter, between October and April. This is when Nordic nights are the longest and darkest, which means you have higher chances of catching sight of the aurora.

Winter is a great time to visit the Nordics for other reasons too. Check out these guides to the top winter activities you can enjoy:

Things to do in Norway in winter

Things to do in Iceland in winter

Things to do in Lapland in winter

5. WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

You can see the aurora borealis at high northern latitudes, especially around the Arctic Circle, as this is where solar activity is strongest. That’s why the Nordic region is the best place to see the northern lights. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Svalbard all lie within or near the Arctic Circle.

In fact, Iceland and the northern regions of Norway, Sweden and Finland are located within the “aurora zone”. Also known as the “northern lights belt”, this is a latitudinal band between 65-72°N where high auroral frequency and intensity occurs. Visit this zone for the best chance of seeing the aurora.

6. WHERE CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS IN SCANDINAVIA?

Norway, Sweden and Denmark are the countries that make up Scandinavia. If you want to go to Scandinavia to hunt for the aurora borealis, your best bet is to visit the northern parts of this region – Swedish Lapland and Northern Norway. It is unlikely you’ll see the aurora in Denmark.

You can witness the northern lights in the neighbouring Nordic nations of Finland and Iceland too. Although these countries aren’t technically part of Scandinavia, they have many similarities and also happen to be great places to catch the aurora borealis!

Lapland – an area covering northern Sweden and Finland – is a fantastic destination for aurora chasing. You could head to Rovaniemi and Kemi in Finnish Lapland, or Abisko National Park near Kiruna in Swedish Lapland.

Or visit Northern Norway for your aurora borealis tour. Take your pick from Norwegian destinations such as Tromsø, Svalbard, Kirkenes, the Lofoten Islands and Nordkapp (North Cape).

Alternatively, go in search of the aurora borealis in Iceland. With its wide open skies and location near the Arctic Circle, you could see the lights from anywhere in the country. For your best chances though, head away from towns with street lights so you can spot the colours more easily.

In Scandinavia you could seek out the aurora borealis in the countryside or on the coast. Plus, not only can you enjoy northern lights tours, but also bucket list activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, and staying in an ice hotel.

Discover more reasons to visit Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland on our ultimate Scandinavia guide .

7. HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

To see the aurora borealis, you need to be in a northern country on a clear, dark night, away from artificial lights. Although the aurora don’t show up on demand, these top tips will give you the best chances of witnessing them.

Firstly, make sure you visit northern regions close to the Arctic Circle. Iceland, Northern Norway, Svalbard and Lapland are the best destinations to see the northern lights in Europe.

Secondly, time your aurora borealis tour for the European winter. The long, dark nights will help you spot the colours lighting up the sky.

Thirdly, avoid light pollution found in built-up areas. This means heading into the countryside where there is less artificial light compared to towns and cities. You could spend some days out in remote areas, or opt for guided evening tours from your city base instead.

Another thing you can do for northern light viewings is check the weather and aurora forecast . Although you can’t do this very far in advance, during your trip you’ll be able to find out if the evening will be clear of cloud or rain and if solar activity will be strong.

You’d also increase your chances of seeing the aurora borealis by taking a guided tour. A local expert would accompany you and take you to all the best spots, sharing their insider knowledge with you.

Read our article on how to see the northern lights for more viewing tips.

8. HOW LONG DO THE NORTHERN LIGHTS LAST?

When the aurora borealis are treating you to their glorious light show, you might find they glow for a few minutes. The lights can show up several times in one night, or last for a couple of hours in one go.

There is no rule as to how long the aurora borealis last, of course, as they are a natural occurrence. If you see them for yourself, no doubt you’ll cherish every second of their beautiful magic.

9. HOW DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH THE AURORA BOREALIS?

The northern lights can be tricky to capture on camera, but with some preparation and the right equipment you can do it. Here are some top tips for photographing the northern lights:

  • Use an SLR camera with manual focus
  • Bring a tripod as you’ll need to do a long exposure shot
  • Get a remote shutter release so you don’t have to touch the camera at all
  • Use a slow shutter speed of between 15 and 30 seconds

For more tips on photographing the aurora, see our northern lights travel guide .

10. WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

It can get rather cold in the Nordic winter, especially if there’s a cool wind. The last thing you want is to feel the chill while you hunt for the aurora borealis at night. That’s why it’s important you pack the right clothing before your trip.

Many northern lights tours will provide you with thermal suits to help you stay warm while you’re out chasing the aurora. It’s also recommended that you wear warm layers underneath.

Here is an essential packing list:

  • Insulated jacket and trousers (windproof and waterproof)
  • Thermal wool underlayers
  • Warm hat, gloves and scarf
  • Warm and sturdy boots

Get more packing advice by reading our experts’ tips and tricks on dressing for northern lights viewing .

11. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can select your chosen arrival date online when reserving your Nordic Visitor tour. For northern lights packages, the arrival dates are between October and April as this is the aurora viewing season.

12. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Absolutely! If you’d like to spend more time in a particular destination, you can request this when booking your tour online. Your dedicated travel consultant will get in touch to confirm the extra days with you.

If you are taking a small group tour, you can add extra nights to the start or end of your trip. This is because the group tour itself is fixed as you will be exploring with fellow visitors on a fixed itinerary.

13. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

You should book your flights once your Nordic Visitor package is confirmed. We recommend you check flights beforehand to find appropriate dates and prices, but only purchase them after your travel consultant has secured your northern lights tour.

Your Nordic Visitor consultant will send you a confirmation email with all the details you need to buy suitable flights.

14. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

The weather is somewhat unpredictable in the Nordics, no matter the time of year you visit. In winter you should always come prepared for cold temperatures, which means bringing warm clothing. Here are the essential items that we recommend you pack for your trip:

  • Warm jumpers or fleeces
  • Waterproof and thermal jackets
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Insulated, waterproof boots
  • Thermal underlayers
  • Waterproof trousers

Put Together Your Own Northern Lights Holiday Package

You don't need to choose one of the holiday packages in order to tailor the trip to your wishes. You can pick activities and put them together any way you want. Here is a couple of examples of how.

Go for a Northern Lights Evening at Camp Tamok, the wilderness centre outside Tromsø. This tour starts with a presentation about Aurora Borealis and some tips on how to photograph this natural phenomenon, before you gather around the fire for a warm meal and a chat. If the sky is clear, the guides will take you on a short hike around the camp and find the best spots for photographing the lights.

If the sky is cloudy and there is no sign of Aurora, you will get to relax by the campfire and listen to stories about the light phenomenon and life behind the polar circle, from folklore to history.

northern lights tour february 2023

It is possible to spend the night at the camp and pick another activity, like a dog sledding tour, the next day. Here the guides start off by providing you with safety instructions and information about how to mush your own husky team. There will be two people per sled so half the trip you will be in charge of steering the sled and the rest of the time you can kick back and relax in the back as the dogs lead the way.

Once the husky safari is completed, you will get a hot meal around the campfire before heading back to Tromsø.

Combine a Northern Lights Evening trip with a Sami culture and Reindeer Sledding tour. Spend the night in rustic accomodation at Camp Tamok.

Start off with the Northern Lights evening and spend a relaxing night at the wilderness Cabin. The next morning you can go for a Reindeer Sledding Daytime Tour. Sit back, relax and join the scenery. Get up and help pull the sled when needed – the perfect activity if you feel energetic and want to contribute.

Northern Lights Cruise Schedule February 2023

The best time to see the captivating Northern Lights is during the late autumn, winter, and early spring months, between October and March. This period offers the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights, as the longer, darker nights provide an ideal canvas for this celestial spectacle. The colder months also often result in fewer tourists, providing a more serene, intimate experience with nature.

Aurora Expeditions™

An aurora is a natural light display that can appear as brilliant green, yellow, red, blue and purple light patterns, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the night sky.

The Aurora Borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. When these particles approach Earth a few nights later, they distort our magnetic field. The excited, ionised atoms that enter our atmosphere through the poles emit light which, when emitted on a large scale, causes the phenomenon of the Southern and Northern Lights.

There is no best place to witness an aurora which, in our opinion, only adds to the mystery and appeal surrounding them. It is most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic and Antarctica, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’. It’s important to understand that this oval-shaped halo can shift slightly, and there are many factors at play that affect how bright the lights appear or if it’s possible to see them at all.

To increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, be prepared to venture into the heart of the Arctic, to destinations such as Greenland, Iceland, Northern Canada and Northern Norway. While aurora activity happens year-round, the best time to witness the Northern Lights is during the long winter months, when the windows for viewing them each night are longer.

Why Join a Northern Lights Cruise with Aurora Expeditions?

First, what is this strange natural phenomenon? An aurora is a natural light display that can appear as brilliant green, yellow, red, blue and purple light patterns, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the night sky. The aurora borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. When these particles approach Earth a few nights later, they distort our magnetic field. The excited, ionised atoms that enter our atmosphere through the poles emit light which, when emitted on a large scale, causes the phenomenon of the Southern and Northern Lights. Northern Lights experiences are best with a dark sky as the aurora is not strong enough to outshine the sunlight.

There is no best place to witness an aurora which, in our opinion, only adds to the mystery and appeal surrounding them. This is why Aurora Expeditions’ Northern Lights tours don’t focus on one spot or location. The Northern Lights are most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’. It’s important to understand that this oval-shaped halo can shift slightly, and there are many factors at play, like weather conditions and clear nights, that affect how bright the lights appear or if it’s possible to see them at all so our Northern Lights tour reflects this.

While aurora borealis activity happens year-round, the best time for a Northern Lights adventure is during the long winter months, when the windows for viewing them each night are longer and the skies darker. The season in the Northern Hemisphere is generally from September through April.

Unique Northern Lights Experiences

Our Northern Lights cruise sticks to the aurora zone in the Arctic Circle, but seeing the lights dance is only one part of your Northern Lights adventure. Exploring the polar regions provides you with opportunities like no other.

By night you will seek out the Northern Lights, but by day we will try to get you off the ship 2-3 times per day (depending on the weather and conditions) so you can get the most out of your time in the Arctic. Walking and bird-watching are popular activities as they offer a chance to witness the unique wildlife in the destinations you visit.

Take a polar plunge in the icy waters of the Arctic Circle, or stay above the water on a Zodiac cruise through the fields of icebergs. Zodiac cruises allow you to get closer to some of the wildlife and landscapes you’ll see throughout your Northern Lights tour. If you have the necessary experience you should also consider adding sea kayaking to your Northern Lights itinerary.

Enrichment is an important component of our expeditions – we hope that you will leave changed and become lifelong ambassadors for the natural world and the wild, important destinations we visit. Your world-class Expedition Team will be on hand to answer your questions about the aurora borealis and how it comes to appear in the night sky, Arctic wildlife , geological formations and the history of the places we visit.

Northern Lights Cruise Regions

Greenland Northern Lights

While Greenland is one of the best countries in the world for witnessing the Northern Lights, getting there can be challenging and often what holds people back. The good news is that, once you’re there, you can see the Northern Lights from almost anywhere in the country – even in the heart of its capital city, Nuuk! This is because Greenland’s population is tiny and scattered across small, remote communities, so it has minimal light pollution. Not many Northern Lights tours go to Greenland but Aurora Expeditions Northern Lights cruises explore using a small expedition ship which makes it easy to visit the prime locations in Greenland to see the Northern Lights.

Some other superb options for aurora viewing in Greenland are Kangerlussuaq, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Kulusuk and Tasiilaq.

Zodiac cruising in Svalbard

Svalbard Northern Lights

Every year, millions of tourists flock to the Arctic for a chance to witness the phenomenon of the Northern Lights. However, few venture to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, located between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole, which offers exceptional conditions to see the Northern Lights, not to mention dramatic fjords, rugged mountain ranges and a huge variety of unique wildlife, including majestic polar bears.

Northern Lights display over a frozen lake in northern Canada

Northern Lights Canada

Northern Canada is the best place to see the Northern Lights in Canada, in remote places with minimal light pollution. Nunavut in the heart of Canada’s High Arctic is a prime aurora borealis viewing country, with its close proximity to the North Pole and vast expanses of tundra. Consider visiting a remote traditional Inuit community for an unparalleled night of dazzling aurora displays.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland

Northern Lights Iceland

Aside from volcanoes, glaciers and geysers, one of the main reasons people have Iceland on their travel bucket list is because they dream of seeing the Northern Lights on display. Iceland is a sparsely populated country, so you don’t have to go far to get away from light pollution.

With longer hours with dark skies and clear night skies, the Westfjords and North Iceland are the best regions to head to if you want to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. There are many fantastic remote locations in South Iceland where you can witness the aurora, including the popular Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The Seltjarnarnes peninsula is a prime viewing area as there is minimal light pollution. There are also plenty of places near Reykjavík you can head to if you’re short on time, including Thingvellir National Park.

Northern Lights display in the Lofted Islands in Norway

Northern Lights Norway

Norway is often the first country that comes to mind when people think of the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights are a prominent feature of the night sky throughout the country and have even influenced folklore and indigenous culture. Because Norway is so long, the seasons change at different times, with summer lasting longer in the south and winter lasting longer in the north. As a rule of thumb, the further north you go, the longer your window is for seeing them.

The ‘auroral zone’ starts in Northern Norway just above the Lofoten Islands and extends up the coast to the North Cape (Nordkapp) and beyond. You will observe the same light display from anywhere in this region, but from a different angle. Some of our favourite places in Northern Norway to witness the Northern Lights include Tromsø, Kirkenes, the Lofoten Islands, Bodø and the North Cape.

Northern Lights Cruise Activities

See The Northern Lights with Aurora Expeditions and our Expedition Team will take you on excursions unique to the High Arctic, fully included in the cost of your expedition. For those interested in a little extra excitement, there are optional activities designed to get you closer to the action. Our Northern Lights expeditions provide a mix of comfort and adventure; for those willing to explore the Arctic the memories will last a lifetime.

Where can you see the Northern Lights?

Northern lights travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are at their peak from late September to late March.

Where can I see the Northern Lights?

The best places to see the Northern Lights are all located in the “Auroral zone” – an area that stretches around the Northern Hemisphere at a latitude of about 66 to 69 degrees north – including parts of:

What causes the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with elements in our atmosphere (such as nitrogen and oxygen), creating brightly colored dancing displays of light.

Am I guaranteed to see the Northern Lights?

While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon, our local leaders do their best to ensure you get to see nature’s greatest spectacle.

Can the Northern Lights be predicted?

Yes, the Northern Lights can be predicted to some extent.

The activity level of the Northern Lights depends on many things (of which some are predictable and some are somewhat random), including sunspots, coronal holes, solar flares and geomagnetic activity.

If you’re not an astronomer, your best bet is to check the local Aurora forecast – a KP-index number of 3 or higher means you have a good chance of seeing the Lights.

Can I see the Northern Lights with the naked eye?

Yes, you can see the Northern Lights with the naked eye. Humans can most easily see the green and white of the lights at night. A camera, however, does not have the same limitations as the human eye, so the colors may appear brighter and more brilliant in photos.

Can I photograph the Northern Lights?

Of course! There is no magic recipe for capturing the Northern Lights. Still, you’ll want to set your camera on a tripod and ensure it has a manual mode functionality, so you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed to capture the spectacular display best.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Everything was perfect. From landing at the airport and being picked up by car rental company, every accommodation, and every tour, it was all taken care of and when I contacted customer service with questions they were quick to reply, I’ve traveled my fair share in my life but this was my first solo journey. I have to admit though, I’m not sure it’s fair to call it solo. Guid to Iceland was there every step of the way. I can’t wait to go back and see the north of the country. This tour took me through amazing sights, breathtaking landscapes and plenty of time to see the capitol as well. The accommodations, especially those guesthouses on people’s farm were amazing. The hosts were polite, welcoming and eager to answer questions. The food was incredible. The guides on the tours continued this, and were courteous and professional. I felt I was always in good hands. It was a trip of a lifetime, that I’ll always cherish. Thank you!!

We had a great time on this trip!! Gunner was very friendly, informative, and took our picture in all of the best spots. Getting to the parking lot was easy as well as getting to the glacier in the super jeep. Our group had a phenomenal time and our expectations were well exceeded; we were inside the glacier climbing around wherever we could fit. We always felt safe and well taken care of and had a great time. Would highly recommend this trip to all our friends!

Visiting Iceland in February

Visiting Iceland in February offers a unique blend of winter wonder and vibrant culture, set against some of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth. This is when the island nation is cloaked in a serene layer of snow, and the dance of the northern lights across the dark Arctic sky becomes a nightly spectacle for those fortunate enough to witness it.

During February, the daylight hours stretch longer, providing a more significant window to explore the stark beauty of Iceland's natural wonders. From the glistening ice caves beneath Vatnajokull glacier to the frosted waterfalls along the South Coast, the country's iconic scenery takes on a quiet, majestic beauty.

The chill of the season is the perfect excuse to warm up in the myriad of geothermal pools scattered throughout the country, with the Blue Lagoon being a highlight for many.

Despite the cold, Reykjavik pulses with warmth from its lively festivals, cozy cafes , and the vibrant spirit of the locals. The Winter Lights Festival transforms the capital into a canvas of light and creativity, while Thorrablot celebrations offer a taste of Iceland's rich traditions.

February is an enchanting time to visit for those eager to embrace the cold and experience the unique blend of culture and nature that Iceland provides.

Russia’s Best Locations for the Northern Lights

Home / Russia Travel Tips & Essential Advice / Russia’s Best Locations for the Northern Lights

Only eight countries reach north above the Arctic Circle, but without a doubt, Russia reigns supreme. While this means freezing winters with uninterrupted nights that linger for weeks, it’s also the setting for one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring spectacles – the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights.

Here are 6 of the top unique destinations to view the northern lights in Russia: View map

Table of Contents

1. Murmansk, Kola Peninsula

Murmansk , in the extreme north-west near Finland, enjoys over 40 days of uninterrupted night, making it one of the world’s premier destinations for the Aurora Borealis, and with over 300,000 residents you can enjoy all the cosmopolitan comforts of civilisation amidst the serenity of the Arctic.

Northern Lights Murmansk tour Russia Kola Peninsula icebreaker Lenin

You can get to Murmansk by train (30h) or flight (2h) from Moscow or St Petersburg, what makes this region is easiest to get in order to experience the Northern Lights from late August to May, with the condition that the night temperature is below -10 ° C, so plan your trip for mid-September to mid-April.

The Northern Lights is a poorly predicted phenomenon and depends on the magnetic activity of the Sun. In other words, you have to wait and literally “hunt” it, which means it’s worth a week or more to go. You can diversify your vacation in the Kola Peninsula by skiing in the Khibiny Mountains or dog sledding in Kirovsk.

Check out this snippet of what to see on a tour in Murmansk, hunting the northern lights:

2. Arkhangelsk

There is a general rule for observing the Northern Lights in Arkhangelsk region – the heart of Russian North – the further from the large populated areas, the brighter the “dance of the sky” is. Severodvinsk city is where you’d like to go for the Aurora Borealis hunting from mid-September to mid-April. The radiance of the lights here is distinguished by a green shade and specific flicker. Aurora borealis lasts here from 10 minutes to several days. Well, while waiting for the sky to blossom, you may visit the open-air museum of wooden architecture “Malye Korely”.

The flight from Moscow to Arkhangelsk will take two hours, a journey by train – about 22 h.

3. Naryan-Mar

This forgotten northern outpost lost prominence when easier routes across Siberia opened through the Ural mountains, leaving it a preserved vestige of Nenets culture . Enjoy learning myths, legends, and indigenous lore (like not whistling during the northern lights) in a truly unique journey through Russia’s heartland.

Northern lights green Russia

The Aurora Borealis in the polar Naryan-Mar is very beautiful, it consists of several colours and is accompanied by a flicker, that turns the night sky into a fairy tale. The best time for observation is the season from November to March. This natural phenomenon is observed usually with a sharp change of weather. The flight to Naryan-Mar from Moscow takes slightly less than three hours.

4. Novaya Zemlya

Only reachable by special permit, this northern archipelago is one of the most extreme locations to view the northern lights. Watch the glow of lights bathe herds of reindeer in subtle greens as they stroll on islands stranded in a frozen sea during the polar night. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

5. Taimyr Peninsula

Taimyr is called “the edge of the cold”, because the duration of winter here is from 235 days in the south, up to 285 days in the north of the peninsula. The climate is extremely stiff: in winter it’s from -40 ° C and to -60 ° C. Taimyr is also known as the land of rare amazing northern lights.

Taimyr northern lights

You can get to the peninsula by plane from Moscow to Norilsk (4h), and then to Dixon, Igarka or Khatanga villages by car. These villages are actually renowned for its bright white light show seen only during summer. But don’t get too excited – the year-round high never gets above +5C (43 F), so don’t forget to pack your coat.

The only “city” in the world located north of Arctic Circle, Salekhard in Yamal region thrives on the northern lights. Known for a specific tint of green local Nenets people call “Nger Harp – the light of the dead,” Salekhard is a city with its own unique connection to the winter light show.   The Nenets are the native people of the Yamal , and one of the largest native communities in Russia also called ‘Samoyeds’ – a nomadic people who used to live by herding reindeer and are close to the Scandinavia’s Sami (or ‘Lapps’).

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

If you spend a week out in the tundra or taiga at a nomad camp of Nenets, then you are likely to see the Northern Lights. In general, they can be viewed from August until April, but are most common from November to March and best of all in January and February, when nights are long and dark and colder temperatures bring about multi-coloured Northern Lights, rather than the green ones that appear when it’s “warmer”. To get to Salekhard you can by train from Moscow (45h) or by direct flight (2h).

In Russia, the Northern Lights can be seen even in the more southern areas – in, for example, Karelia, Valdai, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.

Northern Lights in comfort

See the Northern Lights in Russia, on a luxury train. This compelling 10-day itinerary offers a unique contrast between two of Russia’s most majestic cities and the remote, yet charming communities deep within the Russian and Norwegian Arctic Circle. Commencing in St. Petersburg, we visit some of the city’s most prominent historical and cultural sites before embarking on this remarkable Arctic adventure.

The amazing auroras of February 2023 are a visual feast for stargazers (photos)

A series of powerful solar storms set the sky ablaze in the last two days of February, with aurora sightings reported unexpectedly far away from their usual territories.

Purple aurora glow seen above the horizon from California's Death Valley.

Earth recently experienced the most powerful solar storm of the current solar cycle, which caused auroras to spread far away from their usual haunts around the poles. Unexpected sightings were reported as far as California and Western Australia.

Below, you'll see some of the best shots of the late-February 2023 aurora magic. If you're looking to snap photos of the night sky, check out our guide on how to photograph auroras , as well as our best cameras for astrophotography and best lenses for astrophotography .

1. California

Astrophotographer Shari Hunt was surprised to see aurora in her photographs of the Milky Way taken in California's Death Valley.

Want a photograph auroras? We recommend the  Nikon D850 as the top pick in our  best cameras for astrophography guide .

Auroras occur when charged particles of solar wind arrive at Earth in high quantities and interact with Earth's atmosphere . Solar wind consists mostly of electrons and protons released from the sun's upper atmosphere , the corona. When these particles carry a magnetic field that has the opposite direction than Earth's magnetic field , the two fields connect and channel the solar wind particles deep into the atmosphere.

Due to the nature of Earth's magnetic field lines, the particles tend to penetrate the deepest above the polar regions, which is why most auroras remain restricted within the polar circles.

The G3 category solar storm that hit Earth on Tuesday (Feb. 28), however, delivered such a powerful solar wind blast that the auroral glow was observable as far south as California.

American astrophotographer Shari Hunt was completely taken by surprise when she spotted the purplish glow in her picture of the Milky Way taken from California's Death Valley.

"I thought I left my camera on auto white balance or something went wrong," Hunt told Space.com in an email. "I had never seen an airglow like that! So, I took another shot and told my friend who was also there to check with her camera."

At 36 degrees northern latitude, Death Valley is too far south for most aurora displays. According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) , a G3 storm, such the one of Feb. 28, would usually produce auroras in the northernmost U.S. states. The most severe G5 category, which usually occurs only a couple of times during each 11-year solar cycle , may light up the sky as far south as Florida. Thanks to sensitive photographic equipment, however, skywatchers can now detect polar lights from much further afield even during milder events.

2. Australia

Aurora visible from Island Point, just south of Mandurah tonight! Was totally worth the effort!#Aurora #Perth #Mandurah pic.twitter.com/n0zA4jhKK0 February 27, 2023

The southern polar lights, also known as aurora australis, are usually visible only to researchers at science stations in Antarctica and the neighboring penguin colonies. This time, however, the southern lights spilled over as far north as Perth, Western Australia.

At 32 degrees south latitude, Perth is a little farther to the north than Melbourne, Adelaide or Tasmania, none of which sees many aurora displays.

According to a photographer who identifies as Shelley on Twitter , the glow was bright enough in Perth to be clearly visible to the naked eye.

3. Auroras from space

Astronauts on the International Space Station enjoy aurora sightings quite regularly, and these views are always spectacular. Orbiting 248 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth's surface on average, the space station completes a lap around the planet every 90 minutes, thus providing its inhabitants with an aurora tour that none on Earth can experience.

The aurora borealis during the last two days of February was so intense that it was visible even to weather forecasting satellites orbiting twice as high as the International Space Station. The NOAA-20 satellite captured a band of orange glow above the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday (Feb. 26) at 11:01 p.m. ET (0401 GMT on Monday, Feb. 27).

4. Aurora spectacle in the center of Stockholm

People watch aurora borealis, in central Stockholm, on Feb. 27, 2023.

One of Europe's northernmost countries, Sweden enjoys polar lights regularly. Usually, however, they are not bright enough to light up the skies above the country's capital Stockholm, which, with a population of nearly one million, suffers from the usual urban ailment of light pollution.

But the polar lights of Feb. 27 and 28 were so intense that they rewarded even those completely lacking adventurous spirit. The green aurora glow was clearly visible right at the city's center, arching over the city's landmarks, including its famous city hall.

5. U.K. and France: Stonehenge, Mont-Saint-Michel adorned by auroras

Virtually the whole of the British Isles enjoyed aurora displays on Feb. 27 and 28, although cloudy weather made the aurora chase in places more complicated.

A photographer based in Wiltshire in the south of England captured an image of the mesmerizing yellow and orange glow above the iconic Stonehenge monument, which was widely shared on Twitter.

France's iconic medieval abbey Mont-Saint-Michel with a glow of aurora borealis in the background.

France also got one of its greatest historical sights illuminated by the polar lights. Images show the spectacular medieval abbey Mont-Saint-Michel, located on an island in northwestern France's Normandy region, with a faint purplish glow in the background.

6. Aurora glow lights up Danish and Dutch beaches

Dutch and Danish beaches provided an amazing viewing spot to experience the Feb. 27 and 28 auroras.

Northern lights (aurora borealis) illuminate the sky as visitors walk along Hornbaek Beach in the northern part of Sealand, Denmark late on February 27, 2023.

The Netherlands is a little too far south for regular aurora displays, but this time, the auroras were visible all over the country.

7. Aurora makes it to London

An unexpected aurora sighting was made by an astrophotographer identified on Twitter as @skydevphil, who managed to photograph bands of green and purple glow from the outskirts of the U.K.'s capital London.

"Aurora Borealis not [far] from London. I took this picture just twenty minutes from Amersham tube," @skydevphil tweeted.

Amersham is a tiny town about one hour's drive from central London. But with London being Europe's largest city and the most light-polluted one, the sighting certainly came as a surprise.

What are the best places to see the Northern Lights?

  • Published: 27 Feb 2023
  • Author: David Ward
  • Northern Lights Winter

When now Aurora, daughter of the dawn, With rosy lustre purpled o’er the lawn.

Updated for the 2024/2025 season – to ensure you have a strong chance of spotting the celestial ballet, we’ve put together a list of the top destinations based on regularity, quality and accessibility of Northern Lights viewing in Scandinavia and the Nordics.

1. Tromso, Norway

Northern Lights in Tromso, Norway

Based in the heart of the aurora zone in the Norwegian Arctic, the city is widely regarded as one of the world’s best places to see the Northern Lights. Easily accessed from the UK – with a direct flight from London taking just 3.5 hours – Tromso serves as a popular destination year after year and offers excellent aurora views from September all the way until April. The city itself is a lively affair, with more pubs and bars per capita than anywhere else in Norway .

2. Swedish Lapland

Northern Lights in Sweden Brandon Lodge

Arriving at the zenith of the Swedish wilderness is richly rewarding, for Kiruna provides a quality aurora show without the tourists. Populated by just 18,000 people, a journey into the Arctic is like a journey to the unknown. Or stay at the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, a place with fewer than 600 inhabitants. You can catch the lights between October and March here, although it’s not uncommon for a display a little earlier and later during periods of extended clear weather.

Please complete the highlighted fields.

Another excellent place in Swedish Lapland is the Luleå archipelago , which benefits from a lack of light pollution and a host of winter activities on offer to complement the viewing experience, including outdoor camping , husky dog sledding and ice fishing. What's more, the all-new direct flight from the UK to Luleå (from December 2021) makes Swedish Lapland more accessible than ever before.

3. Reykjavik, Iceland

Northern Lights near Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland’s capital remains a favourable choice for many travellers. Brimming with geothermal pools, volcano tours and quality culture, you could be forgiven for forgetting about the Northern Lights altogether. We recommend you don’t, however, as the display is astonishingly recurrent.

Like Tromso, the best months to see the Aurora Borealis are between September to April. For an uninterrupted viewing experience, journey to Hofdabrekka, near Vik in southern Iceland, and enjoy the show in mesmerising isolation. Direct flights to Reykjavik are competitively priced and the capital is very walkable, making it great for a quick getaway.

4. Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland

Northern Lights in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland

Situated north of the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is the epitome of snow-laden wilderness. By day, go husky dog sledding, ice fishing or embark on a snowmobile safari, building up to the epic evening – Northern Lights in Lapland. With a similarly Scandinavian September – April optimum viewing time, you can plan a trip to Rovaniemi at your convenience. Best of all, it's the home of Santa, making it the ideal place to take the kids for a Christmas to remember .

5. Ilulissat, Greenland

Northern Lights near Nuuk, Greenland

Greenland’s third largest city is home to just 5,000 people – indicative of just how sparse the region really is. Found on the western coast, Ilulissat provides the opportunity to swap people, noise and disturbance for unadulterated nature.

Watching the Northern Lights in Greenland is very accessible, thanks to the lack of rain and low levels of wind, bringing stable, enjoyable conditions. In addition, Ilulissat is conveniently based in the heart of Greenland’s aurora belt to add further reliability. Between the months of September to April is the best time to visit in this region, and additional daytime activities such as dog sledding and Arctic caving round off the experience.

6. Svalbard, Norway

northern lights tour february 2023

It doesn't get much more remote than Svalbard – a Norwegian archipelago flung far out in the Arctic Ocean, just 650 miles from the North Pole. When it comes to the Northern Lights, these islands' dark winter skies (the sun doesn't poke its head above the horizon in February) are the perfect setting. Head out among its treeless landscapes on everything from snowmobiles to husky sleds as you embrace the magic of the polar night.

7 best places to see the Northern Lights in Russia

Northern lights over the fishing boat Teriberka, Murmansk Region.

Northern lights over the fishing boat Teriberka, Murmansk Region.

The Northern Lights are something akin to a miracle because their appearance depends on many factors: weather, solar activity and geographic location. Also, the evening air should be frosty and the sky clear, without any clouds.  The Aurora season lasts from the end of September to the end of March, and it usually appears from 9 p.m. to midnight. Check the Aurora forecast before your trip.

In Russia, there are many places for observation. The Arctic Circle crosses a large part of the country, and the nighttime light show can be seen from Karelia to Chukotka. Sometimes, even St. Petersburg residents can see the magic Northern Lights. Here are the best places to enjoy them.

1. Murmansk

A cozy house on the coast of the Barents Sea and the aurora. Kola Peninsula, Murmansk region.

The Murmansk Region, which is located on the Kola Peninsula, is very popular among Russian tourists who go there to ski, snowboard and visit traditional Sami villages. With a population of 300,000, this is the world’s largest city beyond the Arctic Circle.

You can see the Aurora in Murmansk, but tourists are recommended to travel 120 kilometers to the small village of Teriberka, which was featured in the movie, Leviathan . The most convenient option is to order a tour, which costs about 9,000 rubles ($150) per person including transportation and hotel. In fact, there are many small towns near Murmansk from where one can see the Aurora, but most are closed to tourists. Good news: The winter in Murmansk is mild, with the average temperature in December and January about minus 10-15 Celsius.

Maria Stambler and her husband visited Teriberka just before New Year’s Eve 2016, a fairy tale time of year, and spent about four hours in the middle of the tundra during the night. Despite the cold, they said it was “an incredible experience.”

“Eventually, we stopped near a large field and everyone marched through the snow to the spot that would serve as the vantage and photo point. There were about 30 people that evening eager to see the Northern Lights. And see them we did!” she marveled.

How to get there: the trip to Murmansk from Moscow or St. Petersburg is rather cheap (return flight costs about 6,000 rubles - $100), and it takes only two hours to get there. You can reach Teriberka by bus ( schedule in Russian ), or by taxi (about 5,000 rubles - $85). The official tourism website of the Murmansk Region.

This small town is the nearest to the Khibiny Mountains on the Kola Peninsula and a popular place for skiing. There are several resorts here, including Kukisvumchorr , Bolshoi Vudyavr (only in Russian) and Kolasportland (only in Russian).

The Khibiny Mountains are located south of Murmansk, but the climate is more severe. From high up, the sky is clear and bright, and there are more chances to see the Northern Lights.

How to get there: The Khibiny airport near Kirovsk welcomes regular flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg, (roundtrip costs 11,000 rubles - $185). Visit Kirovsk’s official tourism website .

3. Arkhangelsk

This rather large northern city (population 350,000) is also a popular destination for winter tourism. Founded in the 16th century, Arkhangelsk lies in the Arctic Circle, at a point where the Northern Dvina River meets the White Sea. Today, this is a modern city with a major historical center and fine examples of wooden architecture. By the way, Arkhangelsk is depicted on the 500-ruble banknote.

The Aurora can be seen in the city, but it’s worth going to the northern part of the Arkhangelsk Region. The best time to observe the Aurora is the spring and autumn equinox, as well as in winter.

How to get there: Roundtrip flights from Moscow or St. Petersburg cost about 10,000 rubles ($170), and take only 2 hours. Visit the official tourism website of the Arkhangelsk Region.

4. Petrozavodsk

Sometimes the Northern Lights can be seen in Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia. But for more atmospheric photos visit the small Karelian towns in the north:  Kem, Belomorsk, Nilmoguba or along the White Sea coast. You can also observe the Aurora on Solovki Island.

Petrozavodsk is a very interesting city, located 400 km north of St. Petersburg. Moreover, Karelia has a wide range of tourism infrastructure, from convenient transportation routes to English-speaking tour guides.

How to get there: Regular flights from Moscow cost only 7,000 rubles ($120), and there is also the Lastochka express train from St. Petersburg (twice a day). Here is Karelia’s official tourism website .

5. Naryan- Mar

Northern Lights with reflection in the lake, Naryan-Mar.

Northern Lights with reflection in the lake, Naryan-Mar.

The capital of the Nenets Autonomous District in the north of Russia is located beyond the Arctic Circle. Naryan-Mar is a city of reindeer farms, fishing and oil.

There is a monument to the first Russian city built in the Arctic – Pustozersk, founded in 1499. In the 16th century, Pustozersk became a major Russian outpost in the north and in Siberia, and it often served as a place of exile and imprisonment.

The Aurora here consists of numerous shadows and flickering that makes it really fantastic. The best time to visit the region in order to see the Northern Lights and to listen to the legends of the vanished city is in early fall.

How to get there: Roundtrip flights from Moscow to Naryan-Mar cost about 15,000 rubles ($250), and take 2.5 hours. Visit the website of the Center of Arctic Tourism (in Russian only).

The Northern Lights are not a rarity in the Komi Republic, and sometimes the Aurora is seen even in August in Syktyvkar (the capital of Komi), but you’ll have better chances if you go further north to the city of Vorkuta (population 60,000). The region’s northernmost city lies at the far end of a railway line that stretches 2,500 km from Moscow. In the 1930-50s, the region was home to the largest Gulag camp, with over 70,000 inmates. In modern Russia, the city is known for coal mining. The climate is severe, with average temperatures in winter hovering around minus 20 Celsius, and in summer frost is not uncommon.

Locals say the Aurora can be seen even in summer, but they usually see it in winter.  “At this time of year it’s always dark, and the Northern Lights can be seen in the morning, afternoon, and evening. It is emerald green, red and even white.”

How to get there: Flights from Moscow to Vorkuta are several times a month and cost about 30,000 rubles ($500). Travel time is three hours. Another way to reach Vorkuta is via Syktyvkar by train (return flight Moscow – Syktyvkar costs 12,000 rubles - $200; the train takes 21 hours). Visit the Komi Republic tourism website .

The Republic of Sakha-Yakutia is only for the most frost resistant people, and it boasts the coldest city in the world – Oymyakon, where winter temperatures can drop to minus 60 Celsius.

The Northern Lights can be seen near the regional capital of Yakutsk, as well as from other local settlements. Some of the northern towns are closed for individual tourists, but they can be visited with tour groups.

How to get there: Regular flights from Moscow to Yakutsk cost about 20,000 rubles ($330), and take 6.5 hours. Visit Yakutia’s tourism website .

Northern Lights presents annual report 2023

April 9, 2024

northern lights tour february 2023

Today, Northern Lights JV presents its annual report for 2023. The report outlines a year of substantial progress, strategic partnerships, and groundbreaking commercial agreements, reinforcing Northern Lights’ role in supporting European climate ambitions.

“I am proud to reflect on a year marked by strong progress in the development of the Northern Lights carbon transport and storage infrastructure and the carbon capture and storage industry. With signed agreements to store CO2 from the Netherlands and Denmark, Northern Lights is spearheading the commercial market for CCS services in Europe”, says Company Chair Svein Skeie.

In 2023, Northern Lights strengthened its CO2 transport capabilities by the fleet expansion from two to four dedicated CO2 ships, and the physical construction of the offshore and onshore facilities is getting towards completion.

“Northern Lights is on schedule to complete the construction of our transport and storage infrastructure and get ready to receive CO2 from the end of 2024. Our terminal in Øygarden and the offshore developments are now more than 90% completed and our first two ships are also on track to be completed this year”, says Managing Director Børre Jacobsen.

Missed the northern lights last night? Here are pictures of the spectacular aurora borealis showings

By Caitlin O'Kane

July 14, 2023 / 11:06 AM EDT / CBS News

People in 17 states got their hopes up about seeing the northern lights this week, only to be disappointed when the forecast changed. Instead of the aurora borealis being visible in more than a dozen states , experts changed their forecasts to include only a handful . If you missed the northern lights where you live, here are some photos captured in the places they were visible.

Earlier this week, the  University of Alaska's Geophysical Institute  forecast that the lights would be visible in Alaska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Maine.

Some people said they were able to see them in other states, including Washington, Minnesota and Montana, which were included in the original forecast — although in some cases, the lights were faint and barely visible to the naked eye.

Wedding photographer Shaun Crum said he is on a trip through four national parks and stopped in Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota on July 14. What was supposed to be the dazzling display looked like fog, but at around 1 a.m. CT, he went outside with his camera. "Unfortunately, the northern lights weren't really visible to the naked eye," he wrote on Instagram, "but a 10 second exposure brought them out of hiding. Used a 30 second exposure for the Milky Way."

Another photographer captured the lights from Burley Mountain, just outside of Randle, Washington. "The camera helped immensely. I didn't even realize they were there until I turned my camera to that spot in the sky," he told CBS News.

Alyssa Roberts said she spotted the phenomenon in Bozeman, Montana, in the early hours of July 14. "We could see the lights moving and glowing and the colors a little bit, but the camera really illuminated all the colors once I took the pictures," she told CBS News.

Photographer Matt Taylor caught the lights in Alberton, Montana, at around 11:40 p.m. local time on Thursday. He told CBS News he used an iPhone 13 Pro with a 30-second exposure. He said the lights were faint at first, but became more visible after midnight.
