Hi, I went for a cruise trip some time ago and bought NTUC travel insurance. My Nintendo Switch console was damaged as a result of mishandling of luggage. Cruise lines do not provide coverage for such matters, but I thought fortunately I have travel insurance I am able to claim for it. So the cruise line get me an incident report to file for a claim. Back in SG, I filed for the claim, its stated in NTUC travel insurance plan that the payout was up to $500 for damaged items in travel. So I thought this will be just a simple process. Boy was I wrong. Never did I expect NTUC income to be a bunch of jerks. Despite having a clear written report what are the faults, a quotation of repairs, plus original receipt given, NTUC income was insistent that I provide a damage diagnostic report, before they will process the claim. Harlow, the quotation of repairs already states very clearly what are the damages, what needs to be replaced, and what are the cost of repairs. What other info is needed on top of that? You don't know how to read or you got zero intelligence, NTUC? Most game shops, or even large retailers do not have your rocket scientist engineers to write up your detailed schematics or diagnostics, how the hell do you expect me to procure such a report for this? Even if there was such a service available, you'll be sure that kind of report aint gonna come cheap. The policy does not cover the costs of getting such a report. I could jolly well be spending a couple hundred bucks on getting this report, only for NTUC to tell me they can only allow me to claim 100 bucks. Does it even make sense? This is merely a $500 claimable item !! That just defeats the purpose of even buying the insurance, is it not? So, obviously NTUC rejected my claim, by alleging that i did not furnish "enough" documents for them. Yah, i'm sure i'm gonna get those, "you should know before buying NTUC", or the "NTUC is a business, insurers will definitely make it hard for you to claim" comments. But if you are in my shoes, are you not gonna feel the least bit frustrated? What is the point then of buying insurance when you are not at all insured, where you cannot even claim in the first place? Fine, if it is a fake claim, reject it and make it difficult by all means. But mine is a legitimate claim, my documents are already sufficient to prove the damages and cost to repair, why do you have to be such a dick and get anal over it? Of course, $500 is not too big a sum, I can move on from here. But if NTUC can be that much of a prick over a small claim like mine, you can imagine how they treat those medical and disability cases. Needless to say, I will be boycotting all NTUC income stuff and products in the future. You should too.

Sorry to hijack, I also have an issue for travel cancellation due to Coronavirus. Now all policies specifically exclude it. I bought before the exclusion

Have you looked into working with CASE or FIDReC?

Income is rubbish when it comes to claims, had a bad experience myself many years back. If u search the forum you will easily find handful of others with bad experiences of their own. I have told myself never to sign anything from Income no matter how cheap or attractive the offer. We have to spread the word. Insurance is useless if not claimable.

Is this claim experience a norm for insurers who market themselves as “competitive” pricing? Something have to give when things are priced Low. But does it always have to be at the experience of consumers’ Claim experience?

Guys, thank you for your comments and suggestions. IMO, the business model NTUC Income practises is not so different from a scam. They make these fancy pitches of their policies yet they do not live up to their end of the bargain after they collected the premiums. If i just allow this issue to slip by, this is in fact emboldening them to continue to do this to other consumers as well. I don't want them to just get away with this. So I do intend to file a complaint on this matter to CASE / FIDREC or any other possible agencies. I have a legit claim. As long as I am able to demonstrate that I did indeed suffer losses as a result of my travel, and indicate clearly the damages and cost of repair, there is no valid reason why NTUC should reject paying simply by alleging there is the lack of this forensic pathologist "AUTOPSY" report that they constantly harp on. Of course $500 is not a big deal, but I feel this is a matter of principle. Also, I feel that this rejection NTUC is giving is a common pathetic excuse they employ often against their customers. They are out to make it as difficult and as troublesome as possible to deny claims whatsoever. Its relatively inexpensive to file a complaint, so I will do so and see how. I may not succeed, cos there might be some asinine fine print in the policy somewhere that NTUC will bring out to cover their arse later. So I am mentally prepared for this. There wont be a big loss to me even if this fails. But in a way I wanna see the extent how much of a twerp this organization can be, so I can do some effort to shame them. Just that now is the circuit breaker period, so that adds a layer of complication to go about doing this.

oceanicmanta said: agree, I don't consider ntuc travel insurance pricing "competitive". never bought from them before regardless of insurer, i think it depends on what is being claimed ... i find "accidental damaged item" can get more scrutiny insurers also look at repair cost vs replacement cost vs depreciation etc $500 for such claim is large since it is the max claim under NTUC plan The $100 offer is probably for a "fully depreciated" item in NTUC's depreciation schedule ?? Click to expand...
cut3han said: Just to emphasize, $500 is the claim cap NTUC has for accidental damage during travel in the insurance package I bought. The quotation given to me by the retail shop is definitely within this $500 range. I am perfectly fine for NTUC to tell me that considering depreciation, they can just honour maybe $200 of the claim. That is perfectly reasonable. But to tell me that, oh because you don't have so & so report, then outright deny the claim, this is just a downright lowblow dickish move. Will you pay 200 bucks or more to get a report, only to get compensated back the same amount, or even lesser than that? Does that make sense to you? Then what is the point of buying insurance in the first place? How many times has NTUC gotten away from paying their customers with this cheapskate tactic? Click to expand...

Anyone tried to claim air tickets cost from INCOME travel insurance due to tested positive 2 days before departure flight? Our airline is Scoot, air tix cost: ~$800 and we bought the top tier of the travel insurance plan. INCOME insisted on the letter of confirmation from the Airline stating that no refund is allowed for our flight, even though it was stated clearly on the Air Tickets receipt & Itinerary under the airfare rule "Cancellations, refunds and credits are not permitted" which we submitted during the claim application. It has been 1.5months and no response from Scoot when I requested for such letter. Anyone having the same issue?

  • Income Travel Insurance: Is It a Good Deal?

Author - Anastassia Evlanova

  • Covers pre-existing conditions
  • Provides COVID-19 hospitalisation and evacuation coverage for certain countries
  • Expensive, especially annual plans
  • Low personal accident and medical benefits

Like many other insurers, NTUC Income offers three levels of travel insurance policies to cater to the tastes and budgets of all kinds of consumers. Ultimately, its plans tend to be priced quite close to the industry average and feature a medium degree of coverage in most areas with two main weak points. While Income's plans are priced fairly given the level of coverage provided, deal-seekers will not be particularly wowed. However, Income's travel insurance policies stand out because they are one of the only insurers in Singapore that cover pre-existing medical conditions.

NTUC Income Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

NTUC Income's travel insurance plans are best for travellers who aren't price sensitive and want coverage for their pre-existing conditions. You can choose from 3 tiers of plans for both the Enhanced and Enhanced PreX plans: Classic, Deluxe and Preferred for the standard plans and PreX Basic, PreX Superior & PreX Prestige for the pre-ex coverage plans. We found that Income's single trip plans generally cost 15-30% below average compared to its competition, while its annual plans cost between average to 20% above average. For those prices, the coverage is more competitive when it comes to travel inconvenience benefits (cancellations, delays, luggage loss), but sinks to below average overseas medical and personal accident coverage.

This graph compares the price of all the major travel insurance policies in Singapore for a 1-week trip in the ASEAN region in order to help consumers find the cheapest travel insurance for their trip.

NTUC Income offers the standard array of travel insurance benefits, ranging from medical and personal accident to trip inconvenience benefits like trip cancellation, postponement, delays and baggage loss. While most of the benefit limits are slightly below average, Income does boast above average limits for medical coverage in Singapore, trip delay and baggage loss coverage. However, these plans may fail to impress some types of travellers. For instance, Income's Basic plan provides average levels of coverage but won't impress budget travellers since its possible to find cheaper basic plans. The premium tier plan (Preferred) boasts above average coverage for a small amount of benefits, but won't stand out to travellers who equate premium-level plans with market beating coverage.

Income's annual policies cost above average for all 3 plans, so it won't be the best option for frequent travellers who are hoping to save on an annual travel insurance plan. However, as Income is the only insurer that is currently providing COVID-19 medical and hospitalisation coverage as long as you take the mandatory PCR test and test negative pre-departure and won't be travelling to a high-risk nation, it is the best option for travel during the COVID-19 period. Overall, Income's travel insurance plans are just enough for the average traveller and can provide sufficient additional coverage if that traveller needs coverage for pre-existing coverage. Otherwise, Income's Enhanced travel insurance plans may not sway budget travellers or travellers who like high levels of coverage.

Notable Exclusions

NTUC Income only covers pre-existing conditions if you purchase their Enhanced PreX plans. Besides that, the exclusions are pretty standard, including no cover for travelling for medical conditions, items lost or damaged while unattended, travelling to participate in professional or compensated sports, being a victim of war, riots, or rebellion and travelling against the advice of the Singapore Government.

NTUC Income Enhanced PreX Plans Travel Insurance

If you are not limited by budget and just want a plan that will give you ample protection for your pre-existing coverage, Income will be a good choice. However, budget travellers with pre-existing conditions may find Income to be an expensive option. We found that Income's PreX travel insurance plans cost around 3 times as much as Income's standard plans, making them quite expensive considering that Income isn't competitively priced to begin with. As one of the 3 insurers who provides extensive coverage for your pre-existing coverage, it settles somewhere in the middle, with MSIG's plans costing 10-22% less but Etiqa's Tiq plans costing around 15% more.

Besides the pricing, you should also consider the extent of Income's pre-existing coverage benefits. Its PreX plans also combine medical and emergency evacuation coverage under one limit, which brings down the value of these plans considerably (for instance, MSIG's PreX and Tiq's PreX plans have separate limits for medical and emergency evacuation, resulting in more coverage than Income). On the other hand, Income does let you claim for trip inconvenience (cancellations and postponement) due to your pre-existing conditions if you buy its Superior or Prestige plans, which can be a useful benefit for people who book their trips far in advance and have somewhat risky conditions. You should just be aware of the 50% copay you'll be responsible for should you use those benefits.

Income includes medical coverage for adventure and sports including skiing, scuba-diving, white water rafting and motorcycling. There's no golf coverage and no cover for extreme sports such as bungee jumping, skydiving and mountaineering.

Income lets you submit your claim online or via post. Both options require you to submit the proper documentation, which they list when you indicate the type of claim you want to submit. You should read the policy wording before buying the policy so you are aware of what you can and can't claim for.

NTUC Income Travel Insurance review: Covid-19 coverage, pre-existing conditions, premiums

Asia One · 2023-12-14 12:10

ntuc travel insurance claim review

What do you think of when you hear the acronym "NTUC"? The FairPrice supermarket, of course, said every self-respecting auntie ever. But frequent travellers might also think of NTUC Income's popular travel insurance plan since they are one of Singapore's biggest travel insurance providers.

However, NTUC Income travel insurance plans also have a reputation for being expensive. Some internet users have also complained that it is difficult to make claims.

Are these rumours true? Let's find out once and for all.

1. NTUC travel insurance summary

NTUC Income has two travel insurance plans:

NTUC Travel Insurance Standard

NTUC Income Enhanced PreX (covers pre-existing medical conditions)

Each travel insurance plan is then further sub-divided into three plan tiers which provide different amounts of coverage:

Classic/ Basic PreX

Deluxe/ Superior PreX

Preferred/ Prestige PreX (most expensive)

The premiums you will pay for your travel insurance plan largely depend on the country you’re travelling to. Usually, the further your country of destination, the more expensive your travel insurance plan will be. Here are the countries that are covered by NTUC travel insurance:

Asean: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam

Asia: Australia, China (no Mongolia, Tibet), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, ASEAN

Worldwide: All countries

Countries not covered: Afghanistan, Iraq, Liberia, Sudan, Syria

2. NTUC travel insurance coverage

Here’s a quick look at the premiums and coverage for the NTUC Travel Insurance Standard plans:

NTUC Travel Insurance Classic Deluxe Preferred

Price  (Asean) $61/week $75/week $98/week

Price (Asia) $70/week $88/week $122/week

Price (Worldwide) $137/week $156/week $195/week

Overseas medical expenses $250,000 $500,000 $1,000,000

Emergency medical evacuation $500,000 Unlimited Unlimited

Personal accident (death, TPD) $150,000 $200,000 $500,000

Travel delay ($100/6 hours) $1,000 $1,500 $2,000

Trip cancellation $5,000 $10,000 $15,000

Baggage delay ($200/6 hours) $1,000 $1,200 $2,000

Baggage loss $3,000 $5,000 $8,000

Sports & Adventure Some (Scuba diving, hiking, skiing covered)

Covid-19 Yes

At $250,000 to $1,000,000, NTUC travel insurance's overseas medical coverage is generous compared to some of its competitors such as Sompo Travel Insurance's $200,000 to $400,000 overseas medical limit.

However, do note that emergency medical evacuation shares the same overseas medical expense claim limit for adults aged 70 and over — which may not be sufficient if you are in that age range, run into an adverse medical situation abroad, and require both immediate treatment and a medical flight home to Singapore. If medical coverage is important to you, FWD Travel Insurance offers unlimited medical evacuation and repatriation coverage.

One great advantage of NTUC Income's travel insurance is the high trip cancellation coverage ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. Other travel insurance providers might not be so generous. For instance, Great Eastern is offering $2,000 to $15,000, while AIG offers $2,500 to $15,000.

3. NTUC travel insurance pre-existing conditions

NTUC Income is one of the few insurers in Singapore that provide comprehensive travel insurance plans that cover pre-existing medical conditions, such as asthma, eczema, diabetes, high blood pressure, even heart disease. The other two that cover pre-existing conditions are MSIG travel insurance and Etiqa travel insurance.

The most obvious difference between a Pre-Ex travel insurance plan and a regular travel insurance plan is, of course, price. The cheapest NTUC PreX plan costs over twice the price of a regular NTUC travel insurance plan!

For those who have major health problems, you don't have much of a choice. There's no point buying a cheap normal insurance with no coverage for you at all because you definitely will not be able to claim medical expenses, evacuation costs or travel delays linked to a flare-up of your condition.

It is especially worth the money if your condition is either life-threatening or very expensive to treat overseas.

However, if you have a condition that's pure suffering not immediately life-threatening, such as eczema, then it is your choice whether you want to spend more on Pre-Ex travel insurance for better coverage.

It's important to look at the coverage limits if you're seriously considering pre-existing travel insurance. Why? If you're travelling to somewhere with really expensive healthcare, like Europe or the US, you might want to upgrade to the Enhanced PreX Prestige plan.

NTUC Enhanced PreX travel insurance premiums and coverage:

NTUC Enhanced PreX Travel Insurance Basic PreX Superior PreX Prestige PreX

Price (ASEAN) $102/week $128/week $149/week

Price (Asia) $121/week $156/week $183/week

Price (Worldwide) $194/week $240/week $277/week

Overseas medical expenses $500,000 $500,000 $1,000,000

Emergency medical evacuation Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited

Personal accident (death, TPD) $200,000 $200,000 $500,000

Travel delay ($100/6 hours) $1,500 $1,500 $2,000

Trip cancellation $10,000 $10,000 $15,000

Trip postponement $1,000 $1,000 $2,000

Baggage delay ($200/6 hours) $1,200 $1,200 $2,000

Baggage loss $5,000 $5,000 $8,000

Sports & Adventure Limited (scuba diving, hiking, skiing covered)

Is NTUC's travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions any good? For one, NTUC PreX travel insurance covers Covid-19 while MSIG Pre-Ex and Etiqa Pre-Ex don't cover you for Covid-19. So, if you want both pre-existing medical conditions and Covid-19 coverage in your travel insurance, NTUC Enhanced PreX is your only choice.

Even though NTUC Pre-Ex travel insurance offers you Covid-19 coverage, the downside is that they've lowered the medical benefits you get if you're aged 70 and above.

For example, for those aged 70 and above NTUC PreX's overseas medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage share a total claim limit of $500,000 for its basic plan tier (as opposed to up to $250,000 in overseas medical expenses and $500,000 in medical evacuation coverage for under 70s).

By comparison, MSIG Pre-Ex basic offers $250,000 / $50,000 medical (below 70 / above 70) and $1,000,000 evacuation regardless of age, while Etiqa Pre-Ex basic offers $200,000 medical and $1,000,000 evacuation and repatriation of mortal remains.

Otherwise, NTUC PreX's miscellaneous trip cancellation and baggage delay benefits are pretty good.

4. NTUC travel insurance Covid-19 coverage

Whether you buy an NTUC Travel Insurance Standard or an NTUC Enhanced PreX Travel Insurance plan, you'll be relieved to know that all NTUC travel insurance plans automatically come with Covid-19 coverage.

You won't find the Covid-19 coverage table in the usual NTUC travel insurance policy wording. Instead, there's a separate NTUC travel insurance Covid-19 policy wording document that you should refer to.

NTUC travel insurance's Covid-19 coverage and benefits:

NTUC Travel Insurance Covid Coverage (covers PreX)

Trip cancellation $2,000

Trip postponement $2,000

Trip shortening $2,000

Trip disruption $1,000

Medical expenses overseas $150,000

Emergency medical evacuation $150,000

Overseas quarantine allowance ($100/day)   $1,400

Few of us really scrutinise the individual coverage limits on our travel insurance, trusting that they do cover the bare essentials.

The good news is that NTUC travel insurance's Covid-19 extension is simple, and adequate. Take Covid-19 overseas medical coverage for example, NTUC offers $150,000 while MSIG' basic plan offers $75,000. Then, there's overseas Covid-19 quarantine cash allowance, which NTUC gives $100 per day, up to $1,400, but Etiqa's basic plan offers $100 per day, up to $500 only.

5. NTUC travel insurance: Extreme sports

Since our last review in July 2022, NTUC has updated its Travel Insurance policy to include more common vacation activities like scuba diving and skiing.

Nevertheless, extreme thrill seekers may want to go for a more lenient insurance provider such as Direct Asia travel insurance, which properly covers extreme sports and martial arts.

Extreme Sports & Outdoor Adventure NTUC Travel Insurance

Hot air balloon Not stated

Scuba diving Yes (up to 30m)

Skiing and other ice/snow sports Yes

Hiking or trekking Yes (up to 4,000m)

Mountaineering or outdoor rock climbing No (but man-made walls are ok)

Marathons and other competitions Yes

Jet skiing Not stated

White water rafting Yes

Skydiving Yes

Paragliding, hang gliding or parachuting Yes

Bungee jumping Yes

To be honest, NTUC Travel Insurance is adequate if you're looking to snorkel or join a guided tour group with a licensed outdoor adventure operator. But if you’re a hardcore adrenaline junkie… you might want to look around instead.

6. NTUC vs MSIG vs Etiqa travel insurance

If you’re considering NTUC travel insurance, you should be comparing it against established household insurance providers such as MSIG and Etiqa.

NTUC Travel Insurance MSIG Travel Insurance Etiqa Travel Insurance

Price (per week) $61 – $195 $62 – $208.50 $58-280

Covid-19 (per week) Included Included Included (non pre-ex plans only)

Medical Expenses (Overseas) $250,000 – $1,000,000 $250,000 – $1,000,000 $200,000 – $2,500,000

Emergency Medical Evacuation $500,000 – unlimited $1,000,000 $500,000 – Unlimited

Trip Cancellation $5,000 – $15,000 $5,000 – $15,000 $5,000 – $15,000

Baggage Loss $3,000 – $8,000 $3,000 – $7,500 $3,000 – $10,000

All 3 insurers, NTUC, MSIG, and Etiqa offer Covid-19 coverage in their travel insurance plans automatically. Other plans that include automatic Covid-19 coverage include Starr TraveLead Comprehensive, Bubblegum Travel Insurance, Singlife Travel Insurance and DBS Chubb Travel Insurance.

In terms of overseas medical expenses, MSIG offers comparable coverage to NTUC's travel insurance. When it comes to other travel and logistics-related coverage such as trip cancellation and baggage loss, NTUC and MSIG travel insurance plans' coverage are also pretty much on par.

All things considered, NTUC and MSIG travel insurance plans are shockingly similar and competitive. A key difference is emergency medical evacuation coverage for people aged 70 and over-NTUC travel insurance parks that under the overseas medical expense limit.

7. NTUC vs FWD travel insurance

When you pit NTUC travel insurance against one of the most popular "budget" travel insurance providers, FWD, you'll realise that the travel insurance offerings are very similar and competitive.

NTUC Travel Insurance FWD Travel Insurance

Price (per week) $61 – $195 $31.50 – $101.62

Covid-19 (per week) Included $11.39 – $20.04

Medical Expenses (Overseas) $250,000 – $1,000,000 $200,000 – $1,000,000

Emergency Medical Evacuation $500,000 – Unlimited Unlimited

Trip Cancellation $5,000 – $15,000 $7,500 – $15,000

Baggage Loss $3,000 – $8,000 $3,000 – $7,500

Between NTUC travel insurance and FWD travel insurance, coverage is actually largely on par if you're considering a basic travel insurance plan with Covid-19 coverage. However, FWD's prices are lower even if you purchase the Covid-19 add-on.

8. NTUC travel insurance vs other travel insurers

At a glance, here’s how NTUC Income's travel insurance stacks up compared to the other major travel insurers in Singapore.

NTUC Travel Insurance MSIG Travel Insurance Etiqa Travel Insurance FWD Travel Insurance Starr Travel Insurance Direct Asia Travel Insurance AIG Travel Insurance Allianz Travel Insurance Bubblegum Travel Insurance

Medical Expenses (Overseas) $250,000 – $1,000,000 $250,000 – $1,000,000 $200,000 – $2,500,000 $200,000 – $1,000,000 $200,000-$1,000,000 $150,000-$500,000 $100,000-$2,500,000 $250,000-$1,000,000 $150,000

Emergency Medical Evacuation $500,000 – unlimited $1,000,000 $500,000 – Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited $1,500,000 $50,000-Unlimited $1,000,000 Unlimited

Trip Cancellation $5,000 – $15,000 $5,000 – $15,000 $5,000 – $15,000 $7,500 – $15,000 Optional add-on $3,000-$15,000 $5,000-$15,000 $5,000-$10,000 $5,000

Baggage Loss $3,000 – $8,000 $3,000 – $7,500 $3,000 – $10,000 $3,000 – $7,500 Optional add-on $1,000-$5,000 $3,000-$10,000 $1,500-$5,000 $3,000

9. NTUC travel insurance promo

Even though many Singaporeans probably don't mind paying more for NTUC travel insurance just because it's a household brand name, their travel insurance plans are actually pretty expensive.

However, with ongoing promotions like the current 45 per cent discount promo, it can be value for money. All standard per-trip plans qualify for the promo.  For example, if you wanted to go temple-hopping for a week in Myanmar, the cheapest Classic plan would cost just $33.55 after the discount. Here are the premiums you'll be paying with the current 45 per cent discount promo:

NTUC Travel Insurance (45per cent discount) Classic Deluxe Preferred

Price  (Asean) $33.55/week $41.25/week $53.90/week

Price (Asia) $38.50/week $48.40/week $67.10/week

Price (Worldwide) $75.35/week $85.80/week $107.25/week

In addition, Income is offering an additional 15per cent off Enhanced PreX per-trip plans with complimentary personal accident coverage for six months.

10. NTUC travel insurance claim

If you follow insurance threads on forums or even talk to your friends about insurance claims over kopi, you might have gotten wind of NTUC Income's bad claims reputation.

Unfortunately, online forums such as Hardwarezone and Reddit are full of similar stories from users claiming that their NTUC insurance claims were slow, long-drawn-out and plagued with difficulties. According to the users' NTUC claim experiences, there was a lot of emphasis on the need for original invoices to be submitted.

To be fair, between these nasty stories, you'll also find users who managed to claim from NTUC insurance smoothly and received their cheques in the mail.

So, how do you make a claim? Your first port of call should be to get in touch with NTUC Income ASAP.

NTUC Travel Insurance Emergency hotline: Call the NTUC emergency assistance hotline at +65 6788 6616

Here's where it gets confusing. You have to identify the type of claim that you're making and the "correct" way to submit it. Super important: all claims must be made within 30 days of the event or incident.

NTUC Travel insurance online claims: Submit NTUC travel insurance claims online with supporting documents such as invoice, flight itinerary, police report, etc. through their website. You can do so for the following benefits:

Trip cancellation

Trip shortening

Travel delay

Baggage delay

Loss and damage of baggage or personal belongings

NTUC Hard copy claims: For medical expenses, you need to fill in the NTUC travel insurance claim form and drop off the hard copy form with the supporting documents such as hospital bill, medical report, boarding pass, etc. at an NTUC Income branch.

NTUC Email claims: For claims that do not involve travel inconveniences (see above) and medical expenses (see above), you’ll need to fill in the NTUC travel insurance claim form digitally, and email it together with your supporting documents to [email protected]. Include your travel policy number in the subject line.

NTUC Claims settlement time: If there is no dispute, NTUC Income will settle your claims within 10 working days or longer during high-volume travel periods like school holidays.

11. Conclusion: Should I buy NTUC travel insurance?

NTUC travel insurance isn't the absolute cheapest around, but their regular travel insurance plans are very affordable and value for money when there's a 45 per cent promotion going on.

However, just because it's a brand name doesn't mean that their coverage is the highest in town, especially when you compare it with newcomers like FWD. That's not a problem for most travellers though, unless you're going to a super expensive country or encounter some unusual scenario.

For most Singaporeans who just want to eat, chill and relax on holiday, NTUC travel insurance is more than adequate especially as it also provides Covid-19 coverage. However, daredevils should take note that it does not cover more thrilling activities like mountaineering and other extreme sports.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, NTUC Enhanced PreX is one of the very few travel insurance options suitable for you. It is pricey for sure, but probably worth the money if you have a life-threatening condition like asthma or heart disease. Make sure that the plan is sufficient to cover your overseas expenses and/or evacuation.

6 Best Travel Insurance When Flying From Singapore (2024 Update)

ntuc travel insurance claim review

After a multi-year pandemic, travel – especially for leisure – is finally returning to pre-pandemic levels. That means it’s time to look into travel insurance again, especially given that some countries require it before they’ll issue you a visa.

The right coverage will give you and your family at least a little peace of mind as you plan your vacation.

But what’s the best travel insurance package for you? We’ll get into that today, covering:

  • What to look out for in your travel insurance
  • An overview of popular travel insurance packages available
  • Our top 6 choices for travel insurance and why

How to Choose a Travel Insurance Package

If you’re a seasoned traveller, you already know that price isn’t the only consideration. You get what you pay for, after all. Here are five things to look out for before you decide on a travel insurance provider:

  • COVID-19 Coverage. Most insurers these days automatically include COVID-19 coverage, but the degree of coverage differs. Some offer barely enough to cover your medical expenses, while others don’t cover COVID-related trip cancellations or curtailments.
  • Coverage for personal items. If your laptop is damaged or you lose any pricey personal belongings, you’ll want to know that your insurance can cover that cost.
  • Coverage for travel or baggage delays. These can throw a wrench into your itinerary, especially for short trips.
  • Ease of claims. This is why it’s not a good idea to pick insurance purely based on cost. You can check customer reviews to get an idea of the provider’s service quality.
  • Coverage for activities. If you’re planning a skiing trip or any potentially risky activities, it’s good to check that your policy covers any accidents.

6 Best Travel Insurance Packages

We chose each of the following packages because they stand out in their own ways, whether it’s for comprehensive coverage for pre-existing conditions, the best coverage for COVID-19, or the best value for short holidays.

We haven’t omitted any for low coverage in specific areas – e.g. trip inconvenience – as these depend on the traveller’s needs. However, we’ve left out providers with largely poor reviews – this list only features insurers with decent customer service. (That said, no provider has a perfect reputation!)

Here are our top picks:

1. AIG Travel Guard

ntuc travel insurance claim review

AIG Travel Guard

AIG has a good balance of pricing, coverage, and responsiveness to claims – whether you’re claiming for missing baggage, an injury, or a sickness you contracted overseas. We’d recommend getting the Standard policy at minimum, as the Basic policy has many gaps.

Their COVID-19 coverage also includes an overseas quarantine allowance in the event you’re confined to a hotel while travelling. Many policies with automatic COVID-19 coverage leave this out.

Underwritten by Chubb, the DBS TravellerShield Plus is a jack of all trades. It sits in the middle of the price range and offers average coverage for all the standard categories. Overall, it’s a well-rounded package.

There are two things of note with the TravellerShield Plus, though:

  • You can add coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • Its trip inconvenience coverage is higher than similarly-priced offerings

So if either of those holds more importance for you, this may be a good fit.

You may have heard of FWD for its inexpensive, straightforward plans. Most people report that everything from getting a quote to filing claims is a smooth, convenient process that you can complete entirely online.

The downside is that FWD doesn’t have automatic COVID-19 coverage: you’ll have to purchase an add-on if you need it. Its trip inconvenience coverage is also far lower than the market average, though this may be inconsequential for backpackers or light travellers with flexible itineraries.

If cost and reliability are your main concerns, FWD is a great option to consider.

4. MSIG TravelEasy

ntuc travel insurance claim review

MSIG Travel Easy

Above-average coverage at midrange pricing: that’s what you’ll get with MSIG. This insurer also seems to take pride in their service. Most customers report smooth, fuss-free purchasing and claims processes.

And on top of higher COVID-19 and adventurous activities coverage, TravelEasy also insures wedding clothing – in case you’re planning your prenuptial photoshoot abroad.

Go for at least the Elite plan if you want cover for adventurous activities and/or wedding clothing and accessories. The Standard plan leaves out benefits like credit card fraud protection, golfer’s cover, and rental vehicle excess.

5. NTUC Income

ntuc travel insurance claim review

NTUC Income

Most plans covering pre-existing conditions exclude COVID-19 coverage, since the risks multiply exponentially when someone with comorbidities catches the virus. Still, that leaves you out of luck if you happen to have a pre-existing condition and want to tour the world.

That’s why NTUC Income is a strong contender: they cover both pre-existing conditions and pandemic-related claims. You’ll have to purchase a yearly plan if you want coverage for both, and each trip must be no more than 30 calendar days long.

6. Tiq by Etiqa

ntuc travel insurance claim review

Tiq by Etiqa

A member of the Maybank Group, Etiqa Insurance offers  a range of insurance products, including travel insurance, car insurance, and personal accident insurance.

Understandably, plans that cover pre-existing conditions charge a premium for doing so. That’s the case with Tiq travel insurance as well: you’ll pay more than double in premiums if you check the box indicating that you’ve got a pre-existing condition.

Still, Tiq manages to keep its plans affordable. The single trip Pre-Ex plans are priced $5 – 25 cheaper than MSIG’s policies .

And even if you have no need for Pre-Ex coverage, Tiq’s regular travel insurance plans also offer great value at wallet-friendly prices. Just note that the plans don’t include COVID-19 coverage by default, so you’ll have to purchase a rather costly add-on if you need it.

Current promotion: Receive an Apple AirTag worth S$45 with no minimum premium

Summary Table of Travel Insurance Providers

For the price quotations, we’ve used a hypothetical scenario of:

  • A solo traveller in his/her 30’s
  • An 8-day trip to Australia
  • At least $200,000 in overseas medical coverage (or the closest available package)

These starting prices are accurate as of 14 Aug 2023.

Travel insurance review: Is MSIG travel insurance worth it?

Travel insurance review: Is MSIG travel insurance worth it?

MSIG travel insurance is one of the most popular brands in Singapore and is second only to NTUC (impressive!). That’s probably because MSIG used to be the provider of DBS travel insurance .

DBS might have since changed their provider to Chubb, but that doesn’t mean that MSIG travel insurance isn’t solid. Let’s have a look at whether MSIG TravelEasy is worth your money.

MSIG travel insurance at a glance

Here’s a quick look at the three tiers of MSIG TravelEasy insurance plans , the Covid-19 extension as well as the TravelEasy Pre-Ex plans:

Here’s a summary of the Covid-19 extension that applies to single trip policies:

And here are the TravelEasy PreX travel insurance plans, which cover pre-existing medical conditions:

MSIG travel insurance promotions

Though the listed prices of MSIG travel insurance plans seem pretty hefty at first glance, there’s almost always a promotion to keep their prices competitive, like the current 40 per cent discount off single trip plans.

That means if you get an MSIG TravelEasy Standard plan for a week in Asean, it’d only set you back $34.20. That’s quite a steal.

To see what’s on, just click or tap on the “Promotions” tab on the MSIG travel insurance page .

As long as the 40 per cent promotion is on, I’d say it’s worth it to buy travel insurance from MSIG. The price is really competitive against the likes of NTUC Income, Aviva and FWD.

What does MSIG travel insurance cover?

Overall, MSIG’s travel insurance coverage is pretty adequate. The Standard plan has a slightly low coverage limit for emergency evacuation, and the payout for baggage delays is lower than standard, but those aren’t dealbreakers.

But the important thing to note is that the cheapest Standard plan is limited in coverage if you’re planning anything more than a normal sedate city getaway. It doesn’t cover most outdoor activities, even basic ones like skiing and scuba diving.

So you might want to opt for an Elite (or even Premier) plan for better and wider coverage. These higher tier plans cover a whole slew of outdoor activities, including the common ones listed here:

The Elite & Premier plans also cover loss of wedding-related items (so it’s good for wedding photoshoots or destination weddings) and entertainment/sports tickets (so get this if you plan to go to a festival or watch a major football match).

However, another drawback of MSIG’s travel insurance policies is the limited coverage of its Covid-19 extension. It’s payout of $65,000 for overseas medical fees due to Covid-19 falls short of other policies which offer $100,000 and upwards in claims. It also won’t do very much for you in the event of travel inconveniences caused by the pandemic.

MSIG travel insurance claim procedure

Emergency hotline: Call the MSIG emergency assistance hotline at +65 6323 8288

Phone claims: For non-emergency but urgent claim requests, call MSIG’s Claims Hotline at +65 6827 7660. A claims officer will be in touch with you to handle your case.

Online claims: Submit your claim and supporting documents through the online form (linked on   MSIG’s travel insurance claims page ). Or you can download it and email MSIG at [email protected]

Hard copy claims: You can submit your claim in person or mail it to MSIG, 4 Shenton Way, #21-01 SGX Centre 2, Singapore 068807.

Things to note: Refer to MSIG’s travel insurance claims page for instructions and a useful checklist of required documents before you make a claim. There’s also a chatbot with whom you can check on your eligibility for certain claims.

MSIG prides itself on a good claims experience, with personalised, responsive claims specialists attending to your requests. They typically settle straightforward claims within two to three weeks. Expect some delays during peak travel periods like school holidays.

Conclusion: should you buy MSIG travel insurance?

If you just look at its cheapest Standard plan, MSIG travel insurance is extremely affordable after the generous promotional discounts.

The level of support and clarity MSIG provides is also reassuring. Terms & conditions are clearly stated on the site, not hidden away in some remote PDF, and the claims process appears to be pleasant. Basically, it looks like MSIG knows their stuff.

However, the drawback is that MSIG has made the Standard plan very limited in comparison to the Elite and Premier plans. Once you compare their coverage, you will definitely feel tempted to upgrade. It’s a bit like how budget airlines compel you to add a bundle on to your basic-ass air ticket. Another thing to have in mind is that their Covid-19 extension is not the most comprehensive in its coverage.

However, if you’re vaccinated and in the pink of health and are buying from MSIG, it is worthwhile to pay a bit more for Elite if you’re taking part in outdoor activities, a wedding shoot or catching some kind of music or sports event overseas. As a bonus, you get higher coverage limits too.

Direct Asia Travel Insurance Review: Covid Coverage, Claims, Promo Code (2022)

moneysmart

When it comes to offering the cheapest travel insurance in Singapore, the fight to the bottom continues… and Direct Asia travel insurance is one of the more popular budget travel insurance providers that immediately comes to mind.

The premise of Direct Asia is that they sell you insurance benefits directly so you’re not paying anything extra.

If I’ve learnt one thing from going budget, it’s that you must read the product labels or descriptions to find out what you’re really paying for.

So, is Direct Asia travel insurance worth considering for your next holiday? Or should you still buy from the usual few AIG travel insurance , FWD travel insurance , AXA , and NTUC ? Let’s check them out.

  • Direct Asia Travel Insurance Summary
  • Direct Asia Travel Insurance Covid Coverage
  • Extreme Sports and Outdoor Adventure
  • Direct Asia Travel Insurance Terms and Conditions
  • Direct Asia Travel Insurance Claim Review
  • Direct Asia vs FWD Travel Insurance

  • Direct Asia Travel Insurance Review

1. Direct Asia Travel Insurance: Summary

Before we even get into the travel insurance plans, we know what you’re thinking: Is Direct Asia safe? Yes.

We’ve asked the same question in our heads before. Let’s answer your question: Direct Asia is owned by a Bermuda-based insurance provider called Hiscox.

Where is Bermuda? It’s an island owned by the United Kingdom in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, somewhere under New York City.

Is Hiscox insurance legit as well? Yes, Hiscox is very legit. It’s listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE:HSX) and is part of the FTSE 250 Index. And, the company has been around since 1901.

Google Maps screenshot of Bermuda, headquarters of insurance provider Hiscox, which owns Direct Asia Insurance Singapore.

Anyway, coming back to travel insurance.

Direct Asia’s travel insurance plan comes in annual multi-trip and single-trip plans, the latter which has 3 tiers for you to choose from:

  • DA150 (cheapest)
  • DA1000 (most expensive, not covering in this review)

The price of your Direct Asia travel insurance is largely determined by the country you’re travelling to. Like most of the travel insurance plans you’ll find in Singapore, Direct Asia’s travel insurance premiums are divided into 3 categories:

  • ASEAN : Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam
  • Asia : Australia, China (excluding Tibet and Mongolia), Hong Kong SAR, India, Japan, South Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan
  • Worldwide: All countries (except Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Nepal, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Yemen)

Here, a summary table of the key coverage and benefits you’ll get from Direct Asia travel insurance:

Is Direct Asia’s travel insurance good? Compared to AIA travel insurance ($37 to $123/week), Great Eastern travel insurance ($26 to $118/week), MSIG travel insurance ($61 to $201/week), Direct Asia’s travel insurance is pretty cheap at $35 to $94/week.

Cheap is one thing. But is it value for money or not?

Direct Asia’s lowest tier DA150 travel insurance offers overall adequate coverage all round, but it’s far from impressive. For example, the $150,000 limit on overseas medical expenses is a little low compared to FWD ’s and NTUC travel insurance ‘s basic plans which offer $200,000 and $250,000 respectively.

Key Features

Kids go free – up to four kids travel for free with a Family policy only (2 adults)

Matching kids limits – children enjoy the same coverage limits as adults

Optional coverage for Sports Equipment & Extreme Sports are only available for Annual Policies

Optional coverage for Single Trip Travel Insurance: Maid and COVID-19.

Emergency Dental – Accidental Dental treatment can be costly, so it is covered under the main medical expenses coverage which is higher than a separate dental benefit

If you’re thinking of upgrading to a better DA200 and DA500 plan because I mentioned earlier that Direct Asia travel insurance’s prices are quite cheap… don’t be fooled!

When you look at the coverage, the most expensive DA500 is closer to a typical 2nd tier travel insurance plan that other competitors are offering. Which means DA200 is actually kind of in-between basic and middle tier. It looks like a good deal, but it’s not really that value for money.

2. Direct Asia Travel Insurance Covid-19 Coverage

Don’t go around assuming that all travel insurance plans in Singapore have Covid-19 coverage included. Yes, bigger insurance companies such as AIA travel insurance , AIG travel insurance , and Sompo have got Covid-19 coverage included in all of their plans.

However, several other insurers such as FWD and  Direct Asia’s travel insurance plans  do not include Covid-19 coverage by default.

Instead, you’ll need to add on Covid-19 rider  from their ala carte menu. Here are the Covid-19 benefits you’ll get from the add-on:

Unfortunately, Direct Asia travel insurance’s Covid-19 coverage is not the most adequate for your travels.

You can claim up to $3,000 for any trip cancellation or disruption in the event you test Covid positive pre-trip or during your trip. If you test Covid-19 positive prior to departure and want to postpone your trip, you won’t be covered.

You get a sufficient $150,000 for Covid-19 medical expenses overseas, and another $100,000 for emergency medical evacuation or repatriation of your body – which may not be sufficient if you’re terribly ill in a far away country, such as the United States.

Take for example, if you are going to Seoul and buy the most basic Direct Asia DA150 plan at $43.75 for 7 days. You throw in another $27.40 for the Covid-19 add-on. That makes your total premium $71.15 for a basic tier travel insurance plan.

$43.75 + $27.40 = $71.15 for 7 days in Seoul

For the $70 price range,  there’s  Sompo’s Essential travel insurance plan  ($72/week) which offers more benefits such as Covid-19 hospitalisation and quarantine daily cash allowance, or  MSIG Standard travel insurance plan ($74/week) with higher trip shortening, cancellation, and postponement coverage.

MSIG provides cover for insolvency of licensed travel agencies registered with the Singapore Tourism Board (includes NATAS registered travel agencies)

3. Extreme Sports and Outdoor Adventure

Direct Asia travel insurance plans do not cover outdoor activities and extreme sports. The normal travel insurance plan, however, covers regular sports and activities such as:

  • Hot air balloon
  • Snorkelling
  • Hiking (no ropes or specialist equipment, max 1,500m)

Instead, you’ll have to add on the Extreme Sports and Activities package from the ala carte menu to cover any other outdoor adventure and sports you plan to participate in.

Direct Asia is one of the rare travel insurance companies that covers competitive contact sports and races – great if you’re travelling abroad for a marathon, triathlon, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition, or rugby meet. However, this plan does not cover you if you are a professional athlete.

The big caveat you must take note of here is: Extreme Sports package is only available for annual multi-trip plans , but the Covid-19 package is not available for Direct Asia’s annual multi-trip plans. So, you can’t get Covid-19 coverage and Extreme Sports coverage at the same time.

Here are the prices for the Direct Asia Extreme Sports and Activities package:

  • Asia : $81.40/week
  • Worldwide : $105.16/week

Here’s a summary of common holiday adventure activities that Direct Asia’s Extreme Sports rider covers:

4. Direct Asia Travel Insurance Terms and Conditions

Are there any other terms and conditions in Direct Asia’s travel insurance policy wording that you should know about? Yes, in particular these:

  • Air Miles and Hotel Reward Points : Your flight or hotel bookings won’t be covered if you booked them with air miles, hotel membership points, or credit card reward points.
  • Medical Expenses (Singapore) : If you fell ill overseas but want to seek treatment back home, you must consult a doctor within 48 hours of your arrival back in Singapore. You should also get approval from Direct Asia before you go to your private clinic or hospital of choice.
  • Emergency medical evacuation : You need to get any medical evacuation plans to be authorised by Direct Asia before going ahead for it to be claimable.
  • Pre-Existing Conditions are not covered by Direct Asia’s travel insurance plans. If you need coverage for your pre-existing medical conditions, try MSIG travel insurance or NTUC travel insurance plans instead.
  • Death and permanent total disablement claims only cover accidents and not illnesses and diseases.
  • Theft or Loss of Personal Belongings (part 1) : You must have original purchase receipts and documents from your police reports, hotel reports, and airline reports to support your claim. You need to also be able to prove that item was stolen, or lost in the custody of your airline or transport company etc.
  • Theft/ Loss of Personal Belongings (part 2) : While Direct Asia covers theft or loss of personal possessions, the terms and conditions state that they don’t cover belongings that were “misplacement by you” or the “mysterious disappearance” of your belongings.
  • Pet Hotel benefit only covers cats and dogs.

5. Direct Asia Travel Insurance Claim Review

The one great thing about Direct Asia is the responsive and prompt customer service hotline . The customer service team answer calls quickly, give you good advice, and are patient to listen to your travel plans and help you along – a very important support system for travellers who are stuck in emergency situations abroad.

Claim reviews on Google Reviews have been mixed – with some users praising they had a smooth claims process, but others ran into long-drawn claims processes that were eventually denied.

Direct Asia Overseas emergency hotline: Call +65 6603 3699 (international)

Direct Asia Claims hotline (Singapore) : Call  +65 6532 1818

Claims deadline: Claims must be made within 30 days of your return to Singapore

Claims settlement time : According to Direct Asia, 80% of their claims are settled within 24 hours. That’s a very tall order and big promise to make. Anyway, you can expect claims to generally pan out over 1 month to 6 months, and you should diligently call the claims hotline to check on the claims status.

6. Direct Asia vs FWD Travel Insurance

Budget to budget travel insurance provider, is Direct Asia or FWD’s travel insurance better? We compare:

Benefits wise, it’s clear that FWD’s travel insurance offers way more in coverage. On top of that, FWD has numerous great online reviews about their prompt and fast claims processes. However, FWD does require you to get your claim documents straight for the fast claims process to happen.

FWD logo

FWD Premium

Add on coverage for COVID-19 available for both Single & Annual Trips for travel period of 90 days or less.

Optional add on coverage available when your trip is cancelled for any reason for Single Trips. (To be purchased within 7 days of your initial trip deposit for your trip).

7. Direct Asia Travel Insurance Promotion

Direct Asia has an ongoing promotion where you get 40% off all single trip plans , no questions asked and with no end date in sight.

That makes these plans very affordable indeed. A week’s coverage in Asia will cost $26.25 for DA150, which is on the reasonable side of things (usually it ranges from $20 to $25).

Upgrade to DA200 and you’ll pay $29.40, which is still relatively cheap. (Interestingly, both DA200 and DA500 are cheaper than many of its competitors’ 2nd and 3rd tier plans. However, the coverage may not be on par.)

8. Direct Asia Travel Insurance Review

For regular Singaporeans going on holiday, Direct Asia is certainly a cheap budget travel insurance with adequate coverage for the important things such as emergency medical evacuation and overseas medical expenses.

However, you may not get to enjoy miscellaneous coverage such as baggage loss, travel delay etc. – which suits a generally safe, fuss-free, and seasoned traveller .

If you’re prone to testing positive for Covid-19, Direct Asia’s travel insurance is not for you since the Covid-19 add-on rider is pretty pricey for the little coverage it provides.

However, if you have a niche interest like martial arts, go-karting or off-piste skiing, consider buying Direct Asia travel insurance and topping up for the Extreme Sports add-on. It is extremely hard to find another insurer that will cover these.

Comparison Against Other Single-Trip Travel Insurance Policies

In this section, the insurers that we’re comparing Singlife Travel Insurance against its competitors:

  • AIG Travel Guard Direct
  • AIA Around the World Plus (II)
  • Allianz Travel Bronze
  • Klook TravelCare
  • MSIG TravelEasy
  • NTUC Income Travel Insurance
  • Sompo Travel (COVID-19) Insurance
  • Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance (with COVID-19 cover)
  • FWD Travel Insurance Plan.

The basis for this comparison will be the coverage for an individual travelling to ASEAN for a week and the lowest-tiered plan across all insurers.

There will also be an add-on for COVID-19 benefits.

In comparing Singlife Travel Insurance with other insurance policies in Singapore, focusing on single-trip policies for ASEAN travel, we observe the following:

  • Premium Affordability: Singlife Travel Insurance Lite, priced at $49.36, is competitively priced. It’s more affordable than AIG Travel Guard Direct Basic and AIA Around the World Plus (II) Classic, but slightly higher than Allianz Travel Bronze and Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance Entry.
  • Overseas Medical Expenses Coverage: Singlife offers a high coverage amount of $250,000, which is on par with NTUC Income Travel Insurance Classic and MSIG TravelEasy Standard, and higher than AIG, AIA, Allianz, Sompo, FWD, and Etiqa.
  • Accidental Death and TPD: Singlife’s coverage of $50,000 is moderate compared to others. It’s equal to Allianz Travel Bronze but lower than AIA, Sompo, FWD, NTUC Income, MSIG, and Etiqa, which offer higher coverage in this category.
  • Overseas Travel Delay Compensation: Singlife’s $500 compensation is competitive, matching Allianz and MSIG, and surpassing AIG and Etiqa. However, it’s less than AIA, Sompo, FWD, and NTUC Income.
  • Trip Cancellation Coverage: Singlife provides a $5,000 coverage, which is consistent with most other insurers except AIG, which offers a lower amount.
  • Baggage Delay Compensation: Singlife’s $500 is higher than FWD and Etiqa but lower than Sompo and NTUC Income. AIG and Allianz do not offer this benefit.
  • Baggage Loss/Damage: Singlife’s coverage of $3,000 is standard among most plans, except for Sompo and Etiqa, which offer lower amounts. Allianz Travel Bronze does not provide this coverage.
  • Cost-to-Benefit Ratio: Singlife stands out with a high cost-to-benefit ratio of 6260.13, indicating a favorable balance between cost and coverage, especially in comparison to AIG, AIA, Allianz, and Etiqa.

Comparison Against Other Annual-Trip Travel Insurance Policies

Next up, let’s compare the insurers for annual trips. (We’ve removed Sompo Travel Insurance here because they do not offer travel insurance for annual trips.)

The basis for this comparison will be the coverage for a single individual travelling to ASEAN for an annual trip and the lowest-tiered plan across all insurers.

Here’s a comparison of Singlife Travel Insurance against other annual trip policies:

  • Total Premium: Singlife Travel Insurance Lite is priced at $460.00, making it a mid-range option. It’s more affordable than AIG Travel Guard Direct Basic, Allianz Travel Bronze, and NTUC Income Travel Insurance Classic, but slightly more expensive than FWD Travel Insurance Premium and Etiqa TIQ Travel Insurance Entry.
  • Overseas Medical Expenses: Singlife offers a high coverage amount of $250,000, matching MSIG TravelEasy Standard and NTUC Income Travel Insurance Classic, and surpassing AIG, AIA, Allianz, FWD, and Etiqa.
  • Accidental Death & TPD: Singlife’s coverage of $50,000 is lower compared to most other plans, except Allianz Travel Bronze. AIA, FWD, MSIG, NTUC Income, and Etiqa offer higher coverage in this category.
  • Overseas Travel Delay Compensation: Singlife provides $500, which is on par with Allianz and MSIG, and higher than FWD and Etiqa. However, it’s less than AIA and NTUC Income.
  • Trip Cancellation Coverage: Singlife, along with AIA, Allianz, MSIG, and NTUC Income, offers a $5,000 coverage, which is higher than AIG and lower than FWD.
  • Baggage Delay Compensation: Singlife’s $500 is competitive, matching Allianz and MSIG, and surpassing FWD and Etiqa. NTUC Income offers a higher compensation.
  • Baggage Loss/Damage: Singlife’s coverage of $3,000 is standard among most plans, except for Etiqa, which offers a lower amount. Allianz Travel Bronze does not provide this coverage.
  • Cost-to-Benefit Ratio: Singlife’s ratio of 769.57 indicates a good balance between cost and coverage, especially when compared to AIG and Allianz. However, it’s lower than FWD, MSIG, NTUC Income, and Etiqa.

Cruise Insurance Reviews

Best cruise insurance overall: nationwide travel insurance.

Nationwide Travel Insurance  is a long-standing and reputable brand within the insurance marketplace that offers cruise insurance plans with solid coverage and reasonable rates.

It has three cruise insurance options: Universal, Choice, and Luxury. The Nationwide Choice plan, for example, offers $100,000 in emergency medical coverage and $500,000 in emergency medical evacuation coverage.

The right plan for you depends on your budget and coverage needs. But each plan offers cruise-specific coverages like ship-based mechanical breakdowns, coverage for missed prepaid excursions if your cruise itinerary changes, and covered service disruptions aboard the cruise ship.

Best Cruise Insurance for Affordability: AXA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA  offers three comprehensive coverage plans: Gold, Silver, and Platinum. Each of these plans offers coverage for issues like missed flights, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and more.

The highest-tier Platinum plan provides $250,000 in medical emergency coverage and $1 million in medical evacuation coverage. The baggage loss coverage is $3,000 per person, and their missed connection coverage is $1,500 per person for cruises and tours.

In addition, travelers can take advantage of AXA's concierge service, which provides an extensive network of international service providers. They'll be able to assist you with things like restaurant reservations and referrals, golf course information, and more. This service could come in handy if you're stopping at a variety of unfamiliar destinations during your cruise.

The coverage limits on AXA's policies are on the higher end compared to other providers. And you can buy coverage for a little as 4% of your trip cost depending on your age, travel destination, and state of residence.

Best Cruise Insurance for Seniors: Seven Corners Travel Insurance

Seven Corners Travel Insurance lets cruisers enjoy traveling in their golden years with the knowledge they're covered in the event of an accident or emergency. While other providers do offer coverage to those 80+ years old, Seven Corners is known for its affordable premiums while offering above-average medical expenses and medical evacuation coverage limits — two areas of travel insurance coverage that are even more important as we get older.

Seven Corners also offers the option of a preexisting conditions waiver and CFAR insurance at an additional cost, plus "Trip Interruption for Any Reason" coverage, which you won't find on many policies.

You can choose between the Trip Protection Basic or Trip Protection Choice plans, with the higher-tier Choice plan costing more but providing more coverage.

Best Cruise Insurance for Expensive Trips: HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance

HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance  offers three levels of trip protection: TripProtector Economy, Classic, and Preferred. The higher the tier, the more coverage you'll get for things like baggage delays, trip delays & cancellations, and medical expenses. But their premiums remain reasonable even at the highest tier of coverage.

Not only does the HTH Worldwide Trip Protector Preferred plan offer higher-than-average medical emergency and evacuation coverage limits ($500,000 and $1 million, respectively), but you'll also get a baggage loss coverage limit of $2,000 per person and coverage for trip interruption of up to 200% of the trip cost. You also have the option to add CFAR coverage for an additional cost.

Plus, unlike many other providers, World Nomads trip cancellation and emergency medical coverage include COVID-19-related issues.

What sets World Nomads apart from many other insurance companies is that its policies cover 200+ adventure sports. This can be important for adventurous cruisers who plan to take part in activities like jet skiing, scuba diving, or parasailing during their cruise.

Introduction to Cruise Insurance

Cruise insurance may offer unique coverage like missed port of call and medical evacuation coverage. You might not need the flight protections of a regular travel insurance plan if you're catching a cruise at a port near you, but medical and cancel for any reason coverage could be critical.

Understanding the Basics of Cruise Insurance

At its core, cruise insurance is your financial lifeboat, designed to protect you from unforeseen events that could disrupt your sea voyage. Whether it's a sudden illness, adverse weather, or other unexpected occurrences, having the right insurance can make a world of difference.

Why Cruise Insurance is Important

Picture this: You're all set for your dream cruise, but a sudden family emergency means you can't set sail. Or worse, you fall ill in the middle of the ocean. Without cruise insurance, you're not just missing out on an adventure, but also facing potentially huge financial losses. That's why securing cruise insurance isn't just recommended; it's a crucial part of your cruise planning.

Types of Cruise Insurance Coverage

Cruise insurance isn't a one-size-fits-all life jacket. There are various types of coverage, each tailored to protect different aspects of your cruise experience.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage

This coverage is like your safety net, catching you financially if you need to cancel your trip last minute or cut it short due to emergencies, be it due to personal, health-related, or even certain work conflicts.

Medical Coverage

Being on a cruise shouldn't mean being adrift from medical care. Medical coverage ensures that if you fall ill or get injured, your medical expenses won't sink your finances.

Emergency Evacuation Coverage

In the rare case that you need to be evacuated from the ship due to a medical emergency or severe weather, this coverage ensures you're not left adrift in a sea of expenses.

Baggage and Personal Effects Coverage

Imagine reaching your dream destination only to find your luggage lost at sea. This coverage ensures that lost, stolen, or damaged baggage doesn't dampen your cruise experience.

Buying Cruise Insurance

Securing the best cruise insurance isn't just about finding the best price; it's about ensuring it covers all your potential needs.

When to Purchase Cruise Insurance

Timing is everything. Purchasing your insurance soon after booking your cruise can often provide additional benefits and ensure you're covered for any early surprises. As you get closer to your trip your coverage options may get more expensive, and certain providers may not be able to offer you coverage.

How to Find the Best Deals on Cruise Insurance

Keep a lookout for deals, but remember, the cheapest option isn't always the best. Balance cost with coverage, and ensure you're getting the protection you need at a price that doesn't rock your financial boat. A travel insurance comparison site like SquareMouth is a good place to compare multiple quotes from all of the major carriers at once.

How to Pick The Best Cruise Insurance for You

When buying travel insurance for a cruise, consider the additional risks that are specific to cruising. These include hurricanes and other weather-related concerns, strict cancellation terms, high pre-paid costs of a cruise, and the distance to emergency medical assistance.

To find the policy that's right for you, it's best to compare several different cruise insurance policies based on the pricing and coverage they provide. Remember too that all reputable insurance providers will offer a "free-look period." This allows you to return the policy you've purchased for any reason, within a specific time period, for a full refund.

The most important coverages to look for in cruise insurance are:

  • Medical coverage — This coverage will pay for medical bills outside the US. But because treatment can be more expensive while onboard, make sure your policy offers sufficient coverage ($100,000+).
  • Medical evacuation coverage — This coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if you become sick or injured during your journey. But an evacuation from sea will be more expensive than one from land. So you'll want to make sure your coverage has sufficiently high limits ($250,000+).
  • Missed connection (missed port of call) coverage — This type of coverage will help you catch up to your itinerary if you miss your port of call for a covered reason, like a delayed flight on the way to the airport.
  • Coverage for hurricane warnings — With this type of coverage, you don't actually need to be affected by the hurricane. You can cancel and be reimbursed for your trip if the NOAA issues a hurricane warning. If you're cruising anywhere during (or on the tail ends) of hurricane season, this can come in handy. Just note: You can't buy travel insurance to cover a weather event once a storm or hurricane has been named.
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) — This is the most comprehensive coverage you can get, as it allows cancellations and reimbursement for pre-paid expenses for any reason. This can be a wise add-on for cruise coverage given the often higher prepaid expenses associated with cruising. See our guide to the best CFAR travel insurance options to learn more.
  • Preexisting conditions — This coverage ensures that no known health conditions are excluded from coverage. Obtaining a preexisting condition waiver usually requires purchasing your travel insurance soon after booking your trip.
  • Personal possessions insurance — Because of the events and fancy dinners cruise ships hold, you might take more valuable clothing or jewelry with you on a cruise. This type of coverage will insure your belongings against loss or theft while cruising.
  • Baggage loss and delay — This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount for essentials if your bags are delayed or if your bags get lost en route.

As a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay between 5% and 10% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses for cruise insurance coverage. The price will vary depending on factors like your age, your travel destination, and whether you require additional coverage.

If you're booking a cruise, we recommend purchasing travel insurance when you make your first trip payment. That could be for the cruise itself or an expense like airfare to get you to your cruising destination. This way, if you have to cancel your trip, you'll have the most extended coverage period possible.

You can buy your own cruise insurance that isn't offered directly through the cruise line operator. In fact, this could be a better option if you want coverage for your travel to the cruise's departure point, not just for the cruise itself.

The difference between traditional travel insurance and cruise insurance is that cruise insurance offers more specialized coverage, for situations such as missing a departure port and more coverage for medical evacuations, since it's more expensive to evacuate someone at sea than on land.

Most cruise insurance includes coverage for missing a departure port, so you should be able to claim for a missed port. Just make sure you check the details of your policy before you file a claim, and before you travel so you know what compensation you're entitled to.

COMMENTS

  1. Bad Experience with NTUC Income Travel Insurance

Just to emphasize, $500 is the claim cap NTUC has for accidental damage during travel in the insurance package I bought. The quotation given to me by the retail shop is definitely within this $500 range. I am perfectly fine for NTUC to tell me that considering depreciation, they can just honour maybe $200 of the claim.

  2. NTUC Income Travel Insurance 2024 Review: Types, Fees and More

Comparing NTUC Income Enhanced PreX vs MSIG TravelEasy Pre-Ex vs TIQ Travel Insurance Pre-Ex. As mentioned, NTUC Income, MSIG, and TIQ are the only insurers in Singapore that provide coverage for pre-existing conditions at the moment. As you can see, Income Enhanced PreX plans have the highest premiums among the three.

  3. NTUC Income Travel Insurance Review: COVID-19 Coverage, Pre-existing

At $250,000 to $1,000,000, NTUC travel insurance's overseas medical coverage is generous compared to some of its competitors such as Sompo Travel Insurance's $200,000 to $400,000 overseas medical limit.. However, do note that emergency medical evacuation shares the same overseas medical expense claim limit for adults aged 70 and over - which may not be sufficient if you are in that age ...

  4. NTUC Income Travel Insurance Review

12976.49. When we look at the benefit you get for the cost, NTUC Income Travel Insurance is somewhere in the middle for single trips. In short, it's pretty average. The one standout feature is that it offers the highest amount of money for overseas travel delay, up to $1,000, more than most other insurers provide.

  5. NTUC Income Travel Insurance Review: Good Value for Money?

Income's travel insurance policy is the one of the few in Singapore that provides coverage for pre-existing medical conditions. 3.6/5.0. ValueChampion Rating. Personal Accident Coverage. Trip Delay Coverage. Baggage Delay Coverage. Pros. Covers pre-existing conditions. Provides COVID-19 hospitalisation and evacuation coverage for certain countries.

  6. Income's Travel Insurance Review 2023

One great advantage of Income's travel insurance is the high trip cancellation coverage ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. Other travel insurance providers might not be so generous. For instance, Great Eastern is offering $2,000 to $15,000, while AIG offers $2,500 to $15,000. Online Promo.
